Background

The rising prevalence of obesity and the social pressure for thinness increase the prevalence of dieting. However, little is known about the overall perception of dieting strategies actually used by the general population.

Objectives

Our main objective was to investigate perceptions of weight-loss practices in an observational study in order to identify the most favourable strategy.

Design

Adults from the ongoing Nutrinet-Santé cohort study who had reported engaging in dieting in the three previous years were included in the study. For each diet, detailed information was collected on types of diets, circumstances and perception of the diet, and outcomes. Perceptions were compared across diets using sex-specific mixed effects models.

Result

Among the 48 435 subjects who had completed the respective questionnaire, 12 673 (26.7%, 87.8% of women) had followed at least one weight-loss diet in the previous three years. Diet plans prescribed by health professionals and diets conforming to official dietary recommendations were the most favourably perceived among all assessed weight-loss strategies. Alternatively, commercial diet plans and self-imposed dietary restrictions were more negatively perceived (Odds ratios (OR) for adherence difficulty 1.30 (95% confidence interval (0.99;1.7)) in men and OR 1.92 (1.76;2.10) in women compared to official nutritional guidelines; OR 1.06 (0.82;1.38) in men and OR 1.39 (1.26;1.54) in women respectively) compared to official nutritional guidelines.

Conclusion

Official dietary recommendations could be useful tools for maintaining a dietary balance while following a weight-loss diet.  相似文献

Does Investment in the Sexes Differ When Fathers Are Absent?   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
This study examines child survival and growth in a patrilineal Ethiopian community as a function of father absence and sex. In line with evolutionary predictions for sex-biased parental investment, the absence of a father and associated constraints on household resources is more detrimental for sons’ than daughters’ survival in infancy. Father absence doubles a son’s risk of dying in infancy but has a positive influence on the well-being of female members of the household, improving daughter survival, growth, and maternal nutritional status. Lack of paternal investment may be compensated for by other matrilateral kin through increased reciprocity between mother, daughter, and sister.

Disalicylidenepropanediamine (DSPD) has been used widely to investigate photosynthesis using in vitro systems. Evidence is presented which shows that DSPD hydrolyzes rapidly in aqueous solution at pH 7.8 to salicylaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopropane. Some lesser kestrel females (Falco naumanni) show male plumage traits, i.e. grey rumps and tails. This phenomenon has seldom been analyzed in birds, and two hypotheses have been suggested to explain it. The first proposes that, when sexual selection acts favouring the expression of a trait in males, females could show the analogous character by genetic correlation (indirect sexual selection). Alternatively, the expression of these traits in females could be favoured by intra-sexual competition or even by male mate choice selecting ornamented females (direct sexual selection). We have tested if females with male traits are favoured by direct sexual selection, through a 3-yr observational study of 239 female lesser kestrels. Our results cannot support the predictions, as females with grey plumages do not achieve access to better breeding opportunities or fitness benefits. These traits do not seem to be honest signals of phenotypic quality, since physical condition and survival did not differ between females which showed male traits and those which did not. The expression of male traits in these females increased with their ages, but showing a high individual variability. Finally, since the genetic correlation hypothesis is unlikely in this species because all males have grey rumps and tails, we propose a new age-related hormonal explanation.  相似文献

Reciprocal interactions between the host circadian clock and the microbiota are evidenced by recent literature. Interestingly, dysregulation of either the circadian clock or microbiota is associated with common human pathologies such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, or neurological disorders. However, it is unclear to what extent a perturbation of pathways regulated by both the circadian clock and microbiota is involved in the development of these disorders. It is speculated that these perturbations are associated with impaired growth hormone (GH) secretion and sexual development. The GH axis is a broadly neglected pathway and could be the main converging point for the interaction of both circadian clock and microbiota. Here, the links between the circadian clock and microbiota are reviewed. Finally, the effects of chronodisruption and dysbiosis on physiology and pathology are discussed and it is speculated whether a common deregulation of the GH pathway could mediates those effects.  相似文献

An age-related ‘positivity’ effect has been identified, in which older adults show an information-processing bias towards positive emotional items in attention and memory. In the present study, we examined this positivity bias by using a novel paradigm in which emotional and neutral distractors were presented along with emotionally valenced targets. Thirty-five older and 37 younger adults were asked during encoding to attend to emotional targets paired with distractors that were either neutral or opposite in valence to the target. Pupillary responses were recorded during initial encoding as well as a later incidental recognition task. Memory and pupillary responses for negative items were not affected by the valence of distractors, suggesting that positive distractors did not automatically attract older adults’ attention while they were encoding negative targets. Additionally, the pupil dilation to negative items mediated the relation between age and positivity in memory. Overall, memory and pupillary responses provide converging support for a cognitive control account of positivity effects in late adulthood and suggest a link between attentional processes and the memory positivity effect.  相似文献

Vertebrate retinal rod outer segments (OS) consist of a stack of disks surrounded by the plasma membrane, where phototransduction takes place. Energetic metabolism in rod OS remains obscure. Literature described a so-called Mg2+-dependent ATPase activity, while our previous results demonstrated the presence of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in OS, sustained by an ATP synthetic activity. Here we propose that the OS ATPase and ATP synthase are the expression of the same protein, i.e., of F1Fo-ATP synthase. Imaging on bovine retinal sections showed that some OXPHOS proteins are expressed in the OS. Biochemical data on bovine purified rod OS, characterized for purity, show an ATP synthase activity, inhibited by classical F1Fo-ATP synthase inhibitors. Moreover, OS possess a pH-dependent ATP hydrolysis, inhibited by pH values below 7, suggestive of the functioning of the inhibitor of F1 (IF1) protein. WB confirmed the presence of IF1 in OS, substantiating the expression of F1Fo ATP synthase in OS. Data suggest that the OS F1Fo ATP synthase is able to hydrolyze or synthesize ATP, depending on in vitro or in vivo conditions and that the role of IF1 would be pivotal in the prevention of the reversal of ATP synthase in OS, for example during hypoxia, granting photoreceptor survival.  相似文献

To accurately analyze the function of transgene(s)of interest in transgenic mice,and togenerate credible transgenic animal models for multifarious human diseases to precisely mimic human dis-ease states,it is critical to tightly regulate gene expression in the animals in a conditional manner.The abilityto turn gene expression on or off in the restricted cells or tissues at specific time permits unprecedentedflexibility in dissecting gene functions in health and disease.Pioneering studies in conditional transgene ex-pression have brought about the development of a wide variety of controlled gene expression systems,whichmeet this criterion.Among them,the tetracycline-controlled expression systems(e.g.Tet-off system andTet-on system)have been used extensively in vitro and in vivo.In recent years,some strategies derived fromtetracycline-inducible system alone,as well as the combined use of Tet-based systems and Cre/lox P switch-ing gene expression system,have been newly developed to allow more flexibility for exploring gene functionsin health and disease,and produce credible transgenic animal models for various human diseases.In thisreview these newly developed strategies are discussed.  相似文献

Phytochrome controls the appearance of many enzymes in the mustard (Sinapis alba L.) cotyledons. The problem has been whether the effect of phytochrome on the appearance of enzymes in this organ is due to a common initial action of Pfr, e.g. due to the liberation of a second messenger. We have compared the modulation by light (phytochrome) of the appearance of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL)+ and ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase (Carboxylase)+. PAL becomes detectable in the mustard cotyledons at 27 h after sowing while Carboxylase starts to appear only at 42 h after sowing (starting points, 25° C). The starting points cannot be shifted by light. As a major result, in the case of PAL the inductive effect of continuous red light (given from the time of sowing) remains fully reversible by 756 nm-light up to the starting point (27 h after sowing) while with Carboxylase full reversibility in continuous red light is lost at approximately 15 h after sowing. While the induction of Carboxylase is already saturated at a very low level of Pfr (e.g. continuous 756 nm-light saturates the response) and does not depend on irradiance (e.g. continuous 675 mW m-2 red light and 67.5 mW m-2 red light lead to the same time course), PAL induction is a graded response over a wide range of Pfr doses and depends strongly on the fluence rate (high irradiance response, HIR). It is concluded that PAL induction and Carboxylase induction are not only separated in time but differ in every regard except that both responses are mediated by phytochrome.The present data support the previous conclusion that the specification of the temporal and spatial pattern of development is independent of phytochrome even though the realization of the pattern of development can only occur in the presence of phytochrome (Pfr). Vertical climbing is widely accepted to have played an important role in the origins of both primate locomotion and of human bipedalism. Yet, only a few researchers have compared climbing mechanics in quadrupedal primates that vary in their degree of arboreality. It is assumed that primates using vertical climbing with a relatively high frequency will have morphological and behavioral specializations that facilitate efficient climbing mechanics. We test this assumption by examining whether time spent habitually engaged in climbing influences locomotor parameters such as footfall sequence, peak forces, and joint excursions during vertical climbing. Previous studies have shown that during climbing, the pronograde and semiterrestrial Macaca fuscata differs in these parameters compared to the more arboreal and highly specialized, antipronograde Ateles geoffroyi. Here, we examine whether a fully arboreal, quadrupedal primate that does not regularly arm-swing will exhibit gait and force distribution patterns intermediate between those of Macaca fuscata and Ateles geoffroyi. We collected footfall sequence, limb peak vertical forces, and 3D hindlimb excursion data for Macaca fascicularis during climbing on a stationary pole instrumented with a force transducer. Results show that footfall sequences are similar between macaque species, whereas peak force distributions and hindlimb excursions for Macaca fascicularis are intermediate between values reported for M. fuscata and Ateles geoffroyi. These results support the notion that time spent climbing is reflected in climbing mechanics, even though morphology may not provide for efficient mechanics, and highlight the important role of arboreal locomotor activity in determining the pathways of primate locomotor evolution.  相似文献

The association between podoplanin and ezrin in the process of odontogenic tumors invasion has been suggested, but was not studied yet. Our purpose was to investigate the relationship between podoplanin and ezrin expressions in the odontogenic epithelium of ameloblastomas. Forty-seven ameloblastomas were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using anti-podoplanin and anti-ezrin antibodies. The expressions of both proteins were evaluated using a score method and the comparison and association between these proteins were verified, respectively, by Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test and by Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, using a statistical significance level of 0.05. The majority of tumors (87.2%) exhibited strong membranous expression of podoplanin in the peripheral cells. Cytoplasmic expression of ezrin in the peripheral cells of ameloblastomas was stronger than its membranous expression. No statistically significant correlation was observed between podoplanin and ezrin. However, there was statistically significant difference between membranous podoplanin and membranous ezrin expressions, between cytoplasmic podoplanin and membranous ezrin expressions, and between cytoplasmic podoplanin and cytoplasmic ezrin expressions. There was no statistical difference between membranous podoplanin and cytoplasmic ezrin expressions. Accumulation and ethylene-dependent translocation of free polyamines was studied in various organs, the phloem and xylem exudates of common ice plants (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.). Under normal conditions (23–25°C), spermidine predominated among polyamines. Cadaverine was found in old leaves, stems, and, in large quantities, in roots. The heat shock treatment (HS; 47°C, 2 h) of intact plant shoots induced intense evolution of ethylene from leaves but reduced the leaf content of polyamines. Under these conditions, the concentration of polyamines in roots, particularly of cadaverine, increased many times. The HS treatment of roots (40°C, 2 h) induced translocation of cadaverine to stems and putrescine to leaves. An enhanced polyamine content after HS treatment was also found in the xylem and phloem exudates. The exposure of detached leaves to ethylene led to a reduction in their putrescine and spermidine and accumulation of cadaverine, which implies the ethylene-dependent formation of cadaverine and a possible relation between the HS-induced translocation of this diamine to roots and the transient ethylene evolution by leaves. To validate this hypothesis, we compared the ethylene evolution rate and interorgan partitioning of cadaverine and other polyamines for two lines of Arabidopsis thaliana: the wild type (Col-0) and ein4 mutant with impaired ethylene reception. In plants grown in light at 20–21°C, the rate of ethylene evolution by rosetted leaves was higher in the mutant than in the wild type. The content of putrescine and spermidine was reduced in mutant leaves, whereas cadaverine concentration increased almost threefold compared with the wild type. In roots, cadaverine was found only in the wild type and not in the mutant line. Our data indicate the ethylene-dependent formation of cadaverine in leaves and possible involvement of cadaverine and ethylene in the long-distance translocation of stress (HS) signal in plants.  相似文献

Inflammatory mechanisms are proposed to play a role in l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) contributes to inflammation pathways in the periphery and is constitutively expressed in the central nervous system. Considering that inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) formation attenuates l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia, this study aimed at investigating if a NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor would change COX2 brain expression in animals with l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia. To this aim, male Wistar rats received unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine microinjection into the medial forebrain bundle were treated daily with l-DOPA (21 days) combined with 7-nitroindazole or vehicle. All hemi-Parkinsonian rats receiving l-DOPA showed dyskinesia. They also presented increased neuronal COX2 immunoreactivity in the dopamine-depleted dorsal striatum that was directly correlated with dyskinesia severity. Striatal COX2 co-localized with choline-acetyltransferase, calbindin and DARPP-32 (dopamine-cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein-32), neuronal markers of GABAergic neurons. NOS inhibition prevented l-DOPA-induced dyskinesia and COX2 increased expression in the dorsal striatum. These results suggest that increased COX2 expression after l-DOPA long-term treatment in Parkinsonian-like rats could contribute to the development of dyskinesia.  相似文献

Selection pressures that act differently on males and females produce numerous differences between the sexes in morphology and behaviour. However, apart from the controversial report that males have slightly heavier brains than females in humans, evidence for substantial sexual dimorphism in brain size is scarce. This apparent sexual uniformity is surprising given that sexually distinct selection pressures are ubiquitous and that brains are one of the most plastic vertebrate organs. Here we demonstrate the highest level of sexual brain size dimorphism ever reported in any vertebrate: male three-spined stickleback of two morphs in an Icelandic lake have 23% heavier brains than females. We suggest that this dramatic sexual size dimorphism is generated by the many cognitively demanding challenges that males are faced in this species, such as an elaborate courtship display, the construction of an ornate nest and a male-only parental care system. However, we consider also alternative explanations for smaller brains in females, such as life-history trade-offs. Our demonstration of unprecedented levels of sexual dimorphism in brain size in the three-spined stickleback implies that behavioural and life-history differences among the sexes can have strong effects also on neural development and proposes new fields of research for understanding brain evolution.  相似文献

Background

Acquisition of more than one strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has been reported to occur both during and after primary infection, but the risks and repercussions of dual and superinfection are incompletely understood. In this study, we evaluated a longitudinal cohort of chronically HIV-infected men who were sexual partners to determine if individuals acquired their partners'' viral strains.

Methodology

Our cohort of HIV-positive men consisted of 8 couples that identified themselves as long-term sexual partners. Viral sequences were isolated from each subject and analyzed using phylogenetic methods. In addition, strain-specific PCR allowed us to search for partners'' viruses present at low levels. Finally, we used computational algorithms to evaluate for recombination between partners'' viral strains.

Principal Findings/Conclusions

All couples had at least one factor associated with increased risk for acquisition of new HIV strains during the study, including detectable plasma viral load, sexually transmitted infections, and unprotected sex. One subject was dually HIV-1 infected, but neither strain corresponded to that of his partner. Three couples'' sequences formed monophyletic clusters at the entry visit, with phylogenetic analysis suggesting that one member of the couple had acquired an HIV strain from his identified partner or that both had acquired it from the same source outside their partnership. The 5 remaining couples initially displayed no evidence of dual infection, using phylogenetic analysis and strain-specific PCR. However, in 1 of these couples, further analysis revealed recombinant viral strains with segments of viral genomes in one subject that may have derived from the enrolled partner. Thus, chronically HIV-1 infected individuals may become superinfected with additional HIV strains from their seroconcordant sexual partners. In some cases, HIV-1 superinfection may become apparent when recombinant viral strains are detected.  相似文献

Simultaneous changes in sleep and body temperature, produced either by lesion or by stimulation of the medial preoptic area (mPOA), have given reasons to suggest that thermoregulation and sleep regulation are controlled by the same set of neurons. The reasons for simultaneous changes in these parameters are discussed in the present paper with a view to explaining the relationship between thermoregulation and sleep regulation. Changes in body temperature and sleep on destruction of the preoptic area (POA) neurons and the sequence of these changes, suggest a separate control mechanism in the mPOA for regulation of sleep and body temperature. Evidence is put forward in the present paper to show that the mPOA is not involved in the downregulation or upregulation of changes in body temperature with alteration in the vigilance state. On the other hand, circadian modulation of body temperature is possibly involved in altering sleep propensity. A clear indication regarding separate control of sleep and body temperature came from the studies in which noradrenergic agents were applied into the mPOA of animals with and without lesion of the noradrenergic fibers projecting to the mPOA. Experiments in which sleep was analyzed after experimental manipulations of ambient temperature and body temperature, including peripheral, core and brain temperature, are presented here to show a close relationship between thermoregulation and sleep regulation. Various theories regarding the regulation of body temperature during slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep are also discussed. The functional integrity of the mPOA may be essential not only for the regulation of body temperature and sleep-wakefulness but even for the homeostatic regulation of energy balance of the body in response to alterations in environmental temperature and sleep-wakefulness.

Leaves of plants with Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) were analyzed for variation in the content of polyamines in connection with the metabolism of malic acid in the dark and in the light, and with the induction of full-CAM activity. Under conditions (long days) resulting in extremely low CAM activity, young leaves of K. blossfeldiana have very low content in the polyamine-precursor arginine and in putrescine. The content in these two substances was increased dramatically by full-CAM induction with short days. During the course of the night/day cycle two peaks of putrescine content were observed in leaves of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Poelln. Tom Thumb performing full-CAM operation: a large increase occurs toward the end of the day and the first half of the night, and its kinetics corresponds to the increase in the rate of malic acid synthesis; another peak, very sharp, appears during the first hours of the day, concomitant with the time of release of malic acid from the vacuole into the cytoplasm. In the case of Bryophyllum daigremontianum Berger similar variations were observed for the content in spermidine. These results support the hypothesis that polyamines could be involved in countering the tendency toward acidification of the cytoplasm at those moments of CAM operation at which the local concentration of malic acid is increased (i.e., during active synthesis in the dark and during the efflux from the vacuole in the light).Abbreviation CAM Crassulacean acid metabolism  相似文献
