The orchid genera Masdevallia and Dracula bear very strange and bizarre flowers. They are, however, very popular with plant enthusiasts and there is a fair amount of commercial trade in these genera. The genera belong to a sub-tribe of the orchids, the Pleurothallidinae, which otherwise mostly have small and insignificant flowers. The majority of the species of Masdevallia and Dracula have been reported from single localities and approximately two thirds of all species are found at three or fewer sites. Most genera in the sub-tribe have similar distribution patterns. Using published deforestation rates and species distribution profiles we calculate that 402 of the total 3405 pleurothallid species may have been driven to extinction by random deforestation events. It is possible that as many as 46 Masdevallia species and 14 Dracula species have already been lost and that annual extinction rates for the two genera are 1 and 0.3 species per year respectively. It has been suggested that the two genera should be protected, by listing them in CITES Appendix I. It is unlikely that embargoes on trade would change extinction rates caused by forest conversion. bud proliferation, and formed calluses at their base. Successful rooting (84.6%) was achieved dipping the base of each elongated
shoot in 3 g/l (16.11 mM) indolebutyric acid (IBA) for 1–2 s, and transferring to half strength MS medium without growth regulators. These shoots

1. Predicting spread of non-indigenous species requires an understanding of where propagules are being transported, and whether these propagules can survive in the novel habitat and successfully integrate into the recipient community. In this study, we model potential spread of invading Cabomba caroliniana in Ontario, Canada, using a combination of passive and active dispersal models coupled with an environmental suitability model, thereby considering the first two stages of the invasion process.
2. Measures of propagule pressure incorporated both human-mediated dispersal via trailered boats, and advective flow from invaded to non-invaded systems, while habitat suitability was forecasted by combining native and global data sets and using boosted regression trees.

Three lakes appear to be at greatest risk owing to a combination of high boater and water movement from invaded sources, and high environmental suitability. - 2 Under laboratory conditions the duration of pre-adult instars is about 6 weeks. Adults appear from the end of June onwards. Many enter reproductive diapause at the end of July, but remain active till the end of October.

The prey and feeding frequency in free-living grass snakes was studied during 1993 and 1994 at a site in southern England. Individual snakes and common toads were recognized using PIT tags and a small number of adult snakes were radio-tracked over long periods to determine predation rates.
Grass snakes fed, almost exclusively, on common toads (adult, juvenile, and tadpoles). A positive correlation was found between prey size and snake size. Large snakes did not appear to prey upon small toads, although clearly capable of doing so.
Male and female snakes ate large meals (toads) approximately every 20 days between May and September, with females fasting for a period of about 45 days during gestation and egg-laying. After allowing for differences in the number and size of toads predated by male and female snakes, the mean amount of food consumed per day was estimated to be 2.3% and 1.6% of body weight. 相似文献

We measured morphological characters and relative DNA contents to assess variation and phylogenetic relationships among Serapias species in three populations of each of the 10 putative taxa that occur in Southwest Europe. DNA contents indicated diploidy for most species, except for tetraploid S. lingua and hexaploid S. olbia. Multivariate (discriminant) analyses yielded two main groups: a small-flowered S. parviflora group and a large-flowered S. vomeracea group. Within the S. parviflora group, S. elsae should be considered a large-flowered variation of S. strictiflora. The geographically disjunct S. gregaria and S. strictiflora are probably different taxa. In the S. vomeracea group, analyses suggest that S. neglecta and S. cordigera are closely related. Serapias cordigera from the southwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula is probably a subspecies, S. perez-chiscanoi was separated from all other species and S. occidentalis was morphologically intermediate between S. cordigera and S. vomeracea, suggesting a hybrid origin, with the latter two taxa as parents. 相似文献

Eels were fyke-netted in different zones of the Thames Estuary at various times of year and subsamples sexed, aged and stomachcontentsexamined. Instantaneous mortality coefficients (Z) were calculated for each 3 cm length class for eels > 30 cm and used to construct a compartmental model to assess effects of natural and fishing mortality and migration on different life stages of males and females. Growth rates were good and fishing mortality effects low and masked by effects of emigration/immigration (and, possibly, local migrations). Density-dependent mortality appeared to be having minor effects. Males dominate freshwater sites, females the more saline zone and possible implications of food availability and density are discussed. It is concluded the stock is not being over-exploited but that elver recruitment is relatively low. Means of increasing exploitation are discussed, as are ways of increasing production of females to enhance elver recruitment to the Thames and other European rivers. 相似文献

The Granier-system, a relatively simple and continuous method for measuring sap flux density, has been adapted and evaluated
for its use in older, mature grapevines. The original calibration of Granier (1985, Annales Sciences Forestieres, 42, 193-200)
could be extended to a sap flux density of up to 400 10-6 m3 m-2 s-1 with only little error at high flux densities. A time lag of around 20 min was apparent between transpiration and calculated
sap flow which was attributed to the thermal mass of the sensors themselves. The time lag and the consequently dampened response
of the system caused a very low accuracy over short time periods thus reducing the value for detailed plant physiological
investigations. However, when integrating over longer time intervals, much of the error cancelled out. For daily values the
maximum error was within ±10% and after a period of 89 days only 1.5% error remained. This method is thus best suited for
long term measurements of total water use.

The results of the application of Schnabel (Chapman modification), Schumacher & Eschmeyer, Fisher & Ford, and Jolly capture-recapture techniques on the Barbus barbus (L.) population in four areas of the middle Severn are compared. The survival of tagged fish varied in different areas and fish released in some time periods were less vulnerable to recapture than fish released from other samples. It is suggested that the shoaling behaviour of Barbus barbus resulted in non-random mixing of marked fish. The average population size of Barbus barbus greater than 18 cm in length in each of the four sections for the total period of investigation gave population densities ranging from 0.024/m2 to 0.202/m2 . 相似文献

Sap flow measurements in grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) 1. Stem morphology and use of the heat balance method 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The heat balance method was evaluated in detail for its use in older, mature grapevines with stems of 35 – 45 mm in diameter. Dye colouring of the xylem vessels revealed that even 21 year old grapevines did not show any development of heartwood and that xylem vessels of that age still have the capacity to transport water. A comparison of weight loss of potted vines on a balance and sap flow measurements demonstrated that the heat balance system reflected rapid changes in flow rate without any time delay. However, since even 20 year old xylem vessels of grapevines have the capacity to conduct water, the heater band was not able to heat the sap in all year rings evenly. Apparently, at low flow rates this effect was small and sap flow was calculated correctly. With increasing flow rates large thermal heterogeneities developed upsetting the calculation of the heat balance and mass flow. Consequently, actual sap flow was overestimated by 50 to 100% at high flow rates. This could be attributed to thermal gradients in these relatively thick stems excluding the use of this technique for measurements of long term as well as short term water use patterns in older grapevines. Laurel wilt disease (LWD), a fungal disease vectored by the non-native redbay ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff), has caused mortality of redbay (Persea borbonia (L.) Spreng.) in the coastal plain of Georgia since 2003. Despite its rapid spread, little research has evaluated its impacts on redbay population structure and forest communities. Diseased populations of redbay in five sites (2–4 years post infestation) were compared to healthy populations in three uninfested sites in five counties in Georgia. The results showed high redbay mortality, shifts in size structure, and changes in community composition. An average of 90 % of redbay trees ≥3 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) were dead in infested sites, compared to 0–35 % in control sites. Mortality was seen in individuals of the smallest stem diameter category (<1.00 cm diameter at ground height). DBH of live redbay trees in control sites was twice that of those in infested sites. Photosynthetically active radiation was 4.8 times greater at infested sites than control sites due to loss of redbay canopy. Community structure measurements showed redbay trees had the greatest mean importance value (IV) at control sites compared to the 8th mean IV at infested sites for live stems. Two species co-dominant to redbay, sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana L.) and loblolly bay (Gordonia lasianthus (L.) J. Ellis), were of higher importance at infested than control sites, suggesting they are increasing in dominance following the mortality of redbay. This study shows LWD has impacted redbay populations and altered associated forest communities in Georgia. 相似文献

Here, we report the isolation and characterization of 11 polymorphic microsatellites in Limodorum abortivum. Allele variability has been characterized in three populations from Southern Italy and France. The number of alleles ranged from one to six per locus with an average of 3.8 alleles per locus. Observed and expected heterozygosity values ranged from 0.000 to 1.000 and from 0.492 to 0.806, respectively, with striking differences among populations. These microsatellites should be valuable tools for studying fine-scale genetic structure of scattered Limodorum abortivum populations, patterns of relationship with closely related taxa and the evolutionary ecology of its mycorrhizal interactions. 相似文献

A multilayer sediment-water exchange model was used to evaluate the importance of bioturbation in the profundal sediments
of L. Esrom. The temporal variation of the vertical distribution of sedimentary phosphorus fractions was modelled with an
objective function of 1.50. Deviations between measured and simulated values occurred in the spring, where the measured pool
of sedimentary phosphorus sharply declined in the surface sediments. The application of a model for the activity ofChironomus anthracinus based on biomass, oxygen consumption and temperature improved the model in the spring period. The downwards transport of
easy-degradable surface sediments reduced the average release of sedimentary phosphorus from 12 mg P · m−2 · day−1 to 11 mg P · M−2 · day−1. The introduction of a similar model for the other important burrowing species in L. Esrom,Potamothrix hammoniensis, lowered the objective function to 1.37 and increased the average release to 12.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1. Restriction site heteroplasmy involving the enzymes NcoI and XbaI was detected in the mitochondrial DNAs of two individuals of the marine fish Sciaenops ocellatus. This represents only the sixth documented example of mitochondrial DNA restriction site heteroplasmy in animals. Two heteroplasmic individuals were found in a survey of nearly 750 individuals, suggesting that in most studies the incidence of mitochondrial DNA site heteroplasmy may be too low to be routinely detected. 相似文献

An efficient and reproducible procedure for the large scale propagation of Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng. (Curry Leaf Tree) is described. High-frequency direct shoot proliferation was induced in intact seedlings of M. koenigii on modified Murashige and Skoog (1962) (MS) medium supplemented with 5.0 mg/l benzyladenine. Shoot buds originated from the region adjacent to the apex of the primary shoot and the epicotyledonary node of the intact seedling. Shoots elongated following transfer to MS medium without plant growth regulators. The shoot-forming capacity of intact seedlings was influenced by explant orientation. Maximum shoot proliferation was obtained when the shoot-forming region was in direct contact with the medium surface or slightly embedded into the medium. Proliferating shoot cultures were established by repeatedly subculturing mother seedlings on fresh medium of the same composition after excising all newly formed shoots. Roots were formed on excised shoots when they were transfered to half-strength MS containing 1.0 mg/l indole-3-butyric acid. Because cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs) have been shown to play a role in controlling human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and because CTL-based simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) vaccines have proved effective in non-human primates, one goal of HIV vaccine design is to elicit effective CTL responses in humans. Such a vaccine could improve viral control in patients who later become infected, thereby reducing onwards transmission and enhancing life expectancy in the absence of treatment. The ability of HIV to evolve mutations that evade CTLs and the ability of these 'escape mutants' to spread amongst the population poses a challenge to the development of an effective and robust vaccine. We present a mathematical model of within-host evolution and between-host transmission of CTL escape mutants amongst a population receiving a vaccine that elicits CTL responses to multiple epitopes. Within-host evolution at each epitope is represented by the outgrowth of escape mutants in hosts who restrict the epitope and their reversion in hosts who do not restrict the epitope. We use this model to investigate how the evolution and spread of escape mutants could affect the impact of a vaccine. We show that in the absence of escape, such a vaccine could markedly reduce the prevalence of both infection and disease in the population. However the impact of such a vaccine could be significantly abated by CTL escape mutants, especially if their selection in hosts who restrict the epitope is rapid and their reversion in hosts who do not restrict the epitope is slow. We also use the model to address whether a vaccine should span a broad or narrow range of CTL epitopes and target epitopes restricted by rare or common HLA types. We discuss the implications and limitations of our findings. 相似文献
