Reproductive cycles were studied in a group of tame Père David's deer hinds. The non-pregnant hind is seasonally polyoestrous and, in animals studied over 2 years, the breeding season began in early August (2 August +/- 3.3 days; s.e.m., N = 9) and ended in mid-December (18 December +/- 5.7 days; N = 8) and early January (6 January +/- 3.2 days; N = 11) in consecutive years. During the anoestrous period, plasma progesterone concentrations were low (0.2 +/- 0.01 ng/ml) or non-detectable. There was a small, transient increase in progesterone values before the onset of the first cycle of the breeding season. In daily samples taken during an oestrous cycle in which hinds were mated by a marked vasectomized stag, progesterone concentrations remained low (less than 0.5 ng/ml) for a period of about 6 days around the time of oestrus, showed a significant increase above oestrous levels by Day 4 (Day 0 = day of oestrus) and then continued to increase for 18 +/- 2.8 days to reach mean maximum luteal levels of 3.5 +/- 0.6 ng/ml. The plasma progesterone profiles from a number of animals indicated that marking of the hinds by the vasectomized stag did not occur at each ovulation during the breeding season and therefore an estimate of the cycle length could not be determined by this method. In the following year, detection of oestrus in 5 hinds was based on behavioural observations made in the absence of the stag. Physiological and endocrine factors associated with reproductive senescence were assessed in a group of 19 ageing red deer hinds. Reproductive success, defined as the percentage of hinds weaning a calf successfully, decreased gradually from 89% at 6-7 years of age to 50% at 17 years, and subsequently decreased markedly; only one hind reared a calf at 19-20 years of age. When the 12 surviving hinds were approaching 21 years of age, they were compared with ten mature 7-year-old females over the onset of the breeding season. All hinds were subsequently killed, the reproductive tracts were recovered and antral (>/= 2 mm in diameter) and preantral follicle populations were determined by dissection (n = 7 hinds per age group) or stereological analysis (n = 2 ovaries per age group), respectively. Cyclical ovarian activity (plasma progesterone) was evident in fewer aged hinds compared with mature hinds (3/12 versus 10/10, P < 0.001) and mean plasma LH concentrations were higher in aged animals than in mature animals (0.57 +/- 0.05 and 0.20 +/- 0.05 ng ml(-1), P < 0.001). Mean uterine (44.2 +/- 4.5 and 75.4 +/- 4.2 g; P < 0.001) and ovarian masses (0.88 +/- 0.11 and 1.52 +/- 0.12 g; P < 0.001) were lower in the aged hinds, which also had fewer antral follicles than did mature hinds (0.89 +/- 0.35 and 23.5 +/- 4.5 follicles per hind, respectively; P < 0.001). Only one primordial follicle was observed in one of the ovaries of the aged hinds, compared with 7000-21 000 in the ovaries of mature hinds. The high gonadotrophin concentrations, paucity of primordial and antral follicles and failure of ovulation indicate collectively that waning reproductive performance after 17 years of age is primarily due to ovarian failure.  相似文献

Reproductive failure of rising-two-year-old (R(2)) hinds and seasonal misalignment between calving and pastoral feed production are two factors limiting reproductive productivity of farmed red deer hinds in New Zealand. This study aimed to better understand processes around female puberty and breeding seasonality by describing the potential breeding season (i.e., oestrous cyclicity) of three red deer genotypes. A total of 27 hinds born in December 2005, representing Eastern European (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus), Western European (C.e. scoticus) and F1 crossbred (C.e. hippelaphus×scoticus) red deer, were blood sampled thrice-weekly for 7-8 months (February-September/October) across two years spanning the potential breeding seasons as R(2)'s in 2007 (i.e., puberty) and as adults in 2008. Plasma progesterone profiles were used to construct breeding cycle histories for each hind. Four R(2) hinds failed to initiate oestrous cycles (i.e., puberty failure). The remaining R(2) hinds, including all F1 hinds, exhibited between two and seven oestrous cycles. F1 hinds were significantly earlier to initiate, and later to terminate, cyclic activity, resulting in a longer mean pubertal breeding season (139 days) than for Eastern (86 days) and Western hinds (86 days). However, the data for R(2) hinds are confounded by live-weight, with the F1 hinds being significantly heavier than other genotypes. There were significant correlations between live-weight and seasonality parameters in 2007. All hinds were cyclic as adults in 2008, exhibiting between four and nine oestrous cycles, and a mean breeding season duration of between 132 (Western) and 137 (F1) days. For adult hinds there were no significant genotype differences in cyclic onset and cessation timing, and no observable relationships between live-weight and any reproductive parameter. However, the mean dates for the onset of the breeding season for all genotypes in 2008 were 2-3 weeks later than normally expected for adult hinds in New Zealand. The reasons for this are unclear but may relate to chronic stress of frequent animal handling. The study has demonstrated that puberty in red deer hinds is associated with a shorter potential breeding season than for adult hinds, and that perturbation of breeding activity appears to be quite common, leading to incidences of puberty failure and possibly other aberrant cyclic events. Live-weight×genotype interactions may influence puberty but do not appear to be strongly expressed in adults. However, the relatively late onset of oestrous cyclicity in the adult hinds may be an artefact of the study that has masked genetic influences on seasonal breeding patterns.  相似文献

In the present study, pregnancy and the estrous cycle were monitored in captive brown brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) by measuring fecal progestagens with a commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA), along with behavioral data. Fecal samples were collected twice a week during pregnancy and daily during the estrous cycle and post-partum period. It was possible to distinguish between inter-luteal and luteal phases of the estrous cycle. Behavioral estrus corresponded with low concentrations of fecal progestagens. Samples from two consecutive cycles were available from five hinds, and the mean estrous cycle (n=10) was 26.9+/-1.7 d (mean+/-S.E.M.). However, when two extreme cycles (34 and 37 d) were deleted, the mean estrous cycle was 24.7+/-1.2 d. Three animals became pregnant (gestation ranged from 208 to 215 d). After fertile breeding, progestagen concentration in these hinds remained among luteal phase concentrations throughout pregnancy, with the exception of a few peaks. Within 4 d post-partum, two hinds reached interluteal phase values, while one hind maintained luteal concentrations for at least 1 week.  相似文献

This study compared the onset and duration of the breeding season of female red deer (Cervus elaphus scoticus) and its hybrids with either wapiti (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) or Père David's (PD) deer (Elaphurus davidianus). In Trial 1 (1995), adult red deer (n=9), F1 hybrid wapiti x red deer (n=6) and maternal backcross hybrid PD deer x red deer (i.e., 14 PD; n=9) were maintained together in the presence of a vasectomised red deer stag for 12 months. They were blood-sampled daily or three times weekly so that concentration profiles of plasma progesterone could be used to identify the initiation, duration and cessation of luteal events. There was clear evidence of luteal cyclicity between April and September, with the transition into breeding associated with an apparent silent ovulation and short-lived corpus luteum (i.e., 6-12 days) in every hind. A significant genotype effect occurred in the mean time to first oestrus (P<0.05), with wapiti hybrids and 14 PD hybrids being 9 and 5 days earlier than red deer. Between six and nine oestrous cycles were exhibited by each hind, with no difference in mean cycle length (19.5-19.6 days) between genotypes (P0.10). The overall length of the breeding season was significantly longer for wapiti hybrids (143 days) than for either red deer (130 days) and 14 PD hybrids (132 days, P<0.05).In Trial 2 (1998), adult red deer (n=5), 14 PD hybrids (n=5) and F(1) PD x red deer hybrid (n=5) hinds were maintained together from mid-February (late anoestrus) to early May, in the presence of a fertile red deer stag from 1 April. Thrice-weekly blood sampling yielded plasma progesterone profiles indicative of the onset of the breeding season. Again, there was a significant genotype effect on the mean time to first oestrus (P<0. 05), with F(1) PD hybrids and 14 PD hybrids being 13 and 5 days earlier than red deer. However, conception dates were influenced by the timing of stag joining, and were not significantly different between genotypes. The results indicate genetic effects on reproductive seasonality. However, seasonality observed for PD x red deer hybrids more closely approximated that of red deer than PD deer.  相似文献

Concentrations of progesterone in peripheral plasma of red deer hinds were basal (less than 1 ng/ml) during lactation/seasonal anoestrus, but increased abruptly at the onset of the breeding season. Lactating hinds (N = 19) started ovarian cycles 10 days later (P less than 0.01) and conceived 16 days later (P less than 0.001) than did 13 weaned hinds. There was no evidence, from plasma progesterone values, of silent oestrus at the start of the season. Progestagen/PMSG treatment induced early ovulations in 8 anoestrous hinds but fertility was low, only 2 conceiving and giving birth. Pregnant hinds (N = 42) had high plasma concentrations of progesterone (mean 3-5 ng/ml) which declined just before parturition.  相似文献

The pattern of LH secretion and response to exogenous GnRH was determined on 5 occasions during seasonal anoestrus of the Père David's deer hind. LH pulse frequency was low (3.3 +/- 0.6 pulses/18 h) in early anoestrus (February), increased significantly in mid-anoestrus (April; 8.4 +/- 1.4 pulses/18 h) and thereafter declined slightly in late anoestrus (June; 6.3 +/- 0.25 pulses/18 h). Mean LH concentrations also showed significant changes during anoestrus with higher levels in mid-anoestrus (April; 0.85 +/- 0.12 ng/ml) when compared with other times (0.53 +/- 0.05, 0.60 +/- 0.10, 0.68 +/- 0.06 and 0.71 +/- 0.05 ng/ml for February, March, May and June, respectively). LH pulse amplitude showed no significant changes during the study. The LH response to intravenous injections of 2 micrograms GnRH was lowest in early anoestrus (February), increased significantly in mid-anoestrus (April) and remained high through late anoestrus. The response during the luteal phase was similar to that seen during late anoestrus. These results indicate that seasonal anoestrus in the Père David's deer hind is not a uniform state but is characterized by an early period of 'deep' anoestrus.  相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the serum progesterone (SP(4)) profiles and duration of estrous cycles in the farmed Formosan sika deer (FSD; Cervus nippon taiouanus) during the major breeding season. Five parous, open and non-milking hinds were allotted to collect peripheral blood samples twice weekly for P(4) measurement by radioimmunoassay beginning at the initiation of the rutting season indicated by rutting behaviors of the sexually mature stags. The hinds were polyestrous as proved by cyclic changes of SP4 levels. After the presumptive estrus shown by the lowest concentration of SP(4) (0.20+/-0.01 ng/ml), this ovarian hormone markedly elevated on day 7 of the cycle (1.67+/-0.11 ng/ml), reached plateau (3.15+/-0.16 ng/ml, P<0.01) during days 11 to 18, and then declined to the basal levels in the subsequent estrus. It is concluded that mean duration of the estrous cycle in FSD during the major rutting season is 19.3 days with a range of 17 to 21 days, and that the patterns of circulating progesterone profiles during the estrous cycles of the FSD are similar to those of other deer species so far investigated.  相似文献

Uterine involution and postpartum ovarian activity were studied in 53 Nili-Ravi buffaloes. Mean intervals to uterine involution (26 days), regression of the corpus albicans of pregnancy (22 days), resumption of follicular activity (21 days) and first postpartum estrus (56 days) were not affected by the month of calving or age. Mean interval to formation of first corpus luteum (CL) after calving as indicated by progesterone in plasma (>/= 1.5 ng/ml) was 23.8 +/- 1.7 days, but only 52% of these CL were palpable. The number of CL formed before first postpartum estrus ranged from zero to five per buffalo; mean values based upon progesterone and palpation were 1.6 +/- 1.3 and 0.8 +/- 0.2, respectively. Based upon either progesterone or palpation, length of first postpartum luteal phase (7.9 or 6.6 days) was shorter than the luteal phase immediately preceeding the first estrus (12.1 or 8.9 days). Intervals from regular cyclic ovarian activity was not established until first estrus and intervals from the end of one luteal phase to the onset of the next were as long as three weeks. High concentrations of progesterone (>/= 1.5 ng/ml) on the day of behavioral estrus were seen in 23% of the buffaloes studied.  相似文献

Père David's deer hinds were treated with GnRH, administered as intermittent i.v. injections (2.0 micrograms/injection at 2-h intervals) for 4 days, or as a continuous s.c. infusion (1.0 micrograms/h) for 14 days. These treatments were given early (February-March) and late (May-June) in the period of seasonal anoestrus. The administration of repeated injections of GnRH increased mean LH concentrations from pretreatment values of 0.54 +/- 0.09 to 2.10 +/- 0.25 ng/ml over the first 8 h of treatment in early anoestrus, and from 0.62 +/- 0.11 to 2.73 +/- 0.49 ng/ml in late anoestrus. The mean amplitude of GnRH-induced LH episodes was greater (P less than 0.01) in late (4.03 +/- 0.28 ng/ml) than in early (3.12 +/- 0.26 ng/ml) anoestrus, but within each replicate (early or late anoestrus), neither mean LH episode amplitude nor mean plasma LH concentrations differed significantly between the four periods of intensive blood sampling. On the basis of their progesterone profiles, 6/12 hinds had ovulated in response to treatment with injections of GnRH (1/6 in early anoestrus and 5/6 in late anoestrus), and oestrus and a preovulatory LH surge were recorded in all of these animals. Oestrus and a preovulatory LH surge were also recorded in one other animal treated in early anoestrus in which progesterone concentrations remained low. The mean times of onset of oestrus (91.0 +/- 1.00 and 62.4 +/- 0.98 h) and of the preovulatory LH surge (85.8 +/- 3.76 and 59.4 +/- 0.25 h) both occurred significantly earlier (P less than 0.001) in animals treated in late anoestrus. Continuous infusion of GnRH to seasonally anoestrous hinds resulted in an increase in mean plasma LH concentrations, but this response did not differ significantly between early (2.15 +/- 0.28 ng/ml) and late (2.48 +/- 0.26 ng/ml) anoestrus. Ovulation, based on progesterone profiles, occurred in 2/7 hinds in early anoestrus and in 4/6 hinds in late anoestrus. Oestrus was detected in all except one of these hinds. The mean time of onset of oestrus occurred earlier in animals treated in late anoestrus (66.2 +/- 0.32 h and 46.7 +/- 0.67 h, P less than 0.01). The administration of GnRH, given either intermittently or continuously, will induce ovulation in a proportion of seasonally anoestrous Père David's deer. However, more animals ovulate in response to this treatment in late than in early anoestrus (75% compared with 23%).  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of reproductive rest during the preceding year on subsequent breeding in captive Iberian hinds. To achieve this, influences were assessed on hind weight at mating, precalving and postcalving weight, hind body condition at mating, hind weight gain during gestation, hind weight loss at calving, total milk yield and calf birth weight during the following breeding season. Sex ratio was examined according to hind age class (sub-adults or adults), precise age, body condition and weight at mating, and reproductive rest. One hundred and twenty seven gestations and their subsequent lactations were analyzed in pluriparous Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) kept in captivity for two years. Sixty four of these gestations (50.4%) took place after no gestation during the preceding year.Hinds that did not gestate the preceding year were heavier at mating and after calving, gained less weight during gestation, and their body condition at mating was better than those hinds that had gestated. Also, calves from hinds that had reproductive rest the preceding year were heavier at birth than the others. Nevertheless, the probability of bearing a male was greater with increasing age, but not with reproductive rest or any other variable. Total milk yield was positively affected by hind postcalving weight and hind age at mating, but not by reproductive rest.In conclusion, reproductive effort during the preceding breeding influenced the subsequent gestation, having an effect on the following variables: hind weight and body condition at mating, hind weight gain during gestation, postcalving weight, and calf birth weight.  相似文献

A longitudinal observational study of 15 red deer (Cervus elaphus) farms was carried out in New Zealand for 2 years from Mar 1992. Management of hind mobs and their composition during mating, calving, and weaning were recorded. About 2700 hinds were individually monitored for live weight, body condition score and reproductive success. All hinds were pregnancy tested in June by ultrasound and classified as having conceived before May 1, after May 1, or as being not pregnant. Calving dates and dam-offspring pairs were recorded on four farms. The lactational status of hinds and live weight of calves were recorded at weaning. Mean pre-mating live weights of yearling hinds were 81.3-82.8 kg and of adult hinds 98.0-98.7 kg, respectively, for each year of study. The percentage of yearling and adult hinds conceiving before May ranged from 8.3 to 95.0% and from 77.6 to 98.4%, respectively, between farms. Overall, the proportion of yearling and adult hinds not pregnant was 15.3% and 3.2%, respectively. Pregnancy rates at scanning of adult hinds within mating mobs were generally over 90%, and 41.7% of mating mobs had 100% pregnancy rates. In contrast, the pregnancy rates of yearling hind mobs were more variable, with five mobs below 50%, and 34.1% of mating mobs achieving 100% pregnancy rate. Estimated in utero loss rates from pregnancy diagnosis to calving were 0.66 and 0.79% for yearling and adult hinds, respectively. From four farms, median calving dates of yearling and adult hinds were Dec 13 and Nov 30, respectively. Overall, calf survival rates to weaning of yearling and adult offspring were 84.1 and 91.6%, respectively, while the reproductive efficiencies (number of calves weaned per hind mated) were 70 and 83.6%, respectively. Farm mean weaner live weights standardised on Apr 1 ranged from 42-59 kg and 39-51 kg for stags and hinds, respectively. These data are currently the best estimates of reproductive parameters of New Zealand red deer herds, and highlight a wide variability in reproductive indices between farms.  相似文献

Calving date in many mammals is matched to the time of greatest food availability. Out of season calving results in heavy penalties in terms of own and offspring survival or body condition. This study examined whether gestation length is affected by advancing fertilisation. Thirty-six red deer hinds (of the Iberian and Scottish subspecies) were subjected to a synchronisation treatment of oestrus, ovulation, and artificial insemination on three dates, with remaining non-pregnant females mated with an intact male in a last group. Gestation was longer the more the fertilisation was advanced; gestation lasted 241.5+/-1.3 days (d) in the first group, 237.4+/-1.2 d in the second, 235.1+/-1.3 d in the third, and 231.2+/-1.6 d in the last. Mean gestation lasted 234.2+/-0.7 d. Hinds gained less weight during gestation the more the fertilisation was advanced. The difference was due at least in part to net body weight of the hind after calving compared to that at mating, and calves did not differ in birth weight. As early born calves suffer greater mortality in the field, this enlargening of gestation might be a compensatory response of the hinds to match calving with food availability. Under natural conditions, similar small modifications of gestation length may help hinds to overcome short-term adverse conditions for calving. Because calf mortality is correlated with birth weight, hinds may have kept calf birth weight constant at the expense of greater body weight loss.  相似文献

From 17 February 1987 (Day 1) to 5 June 1988 (Day 475), 6 red deer hinds which had been in natural daylength (NL/M) and 6 hinds which had been in continuous artificial light for the previous month (CL/M) were each given melatonin (5 mg in feed) daily at 15:00 h. Six controls (C) received unsupplemented feed. From Day 1 all hinds were in natural daylight and ovarian cyclicity was assessed from plasma progesterone concentrations. Group C first went into anoestrus on 15 March 1987 (Day 27 +/- 9.2 (s.e.m], recommenced cyclicity on 23 October (Day 249 +/- 2.3) and went into anoestrus again on 2 April 1988 (Day 411 +/- 8.7). Group CL/M first went into anoestrus 31 days earlier (P less than 0.05) on 12 February (Day -4 +/- 7.8), before the start of melatonin treatment; 4 hinds then recommenced ovarian cycles 132 days earlier (P less than 0.001) on 13 June (Day 117 +/- 5.8) and continued to cycle for a longer period than did controls. Group NL/M hinds were cyclic at the start of melatonin feeding and continued to cycle for 1 year or more (N = 6). Plasma prolactin concentrations remained suppressed (less than 20 ng/ml) for the duration of melatonin-feeding (Groups CL/M and NL/M) whereas control values (Group C) were elevated (20-120 ng/ml) between April and August (P less than 0.05). The ovarian response by hinds to melatonin therefore depends on initial reproductive status and recent photoperiodic history, and continued administration to cyclic hinds stimulates prolonged ovarian cyclicity irrespective of the time of year.  相似文献

From July 1997 to September 1997 and from March 1998 to July 1998, we studied reproductive behaviors of Père David's deer in Dafeng, China. During the field behavioral observations, we collected fresh voided fecal samples from the Père David's stags and hinds periodically and kept those samples under -20 degrees C until laboratory analysis. We analyzed the fecal testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone concentrations in those samples using radioimmunoassay. During this study, we also recorded 17 types of male reproductive behaviors and nine types of female reproductive behaviors. Reproductive behaviors and the fecal steroid concentrations showed overt seasonal fluctuations. There were statistically significant correlations between some male reproductive behaviors, such as anogenital sniffing, urine sniffing, urine spraying, wallowing, bellowing, antler adorning, Antler swags mud, chasing, herding hinds, chin resting, mounting and copulating, with the fecal testosterone concentrations. These results suggested that seasonal reproductive behaviors in stags are strongly associated with circulating testosterone. We also found that some female reproductive behaviors fluctuate corresponding with changes in fecal estrogen concentrations. Although there was no direct evidence to confirm the correlations between female reproductive behaviors and fecal estrogen in our experiment, we could not rule out that reproductive activities of hinds were largely related to ovarian estrogen secretion, and estrogen is necessary for inducing female reproductive behaviors.  相似文献

An attempt was made to determine cyclicity in yaks using plasma progesterone during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Fifteen non-lactating yaks were used in this experiment. During the breeding season (July to November), blood samples were collected from 8 yaks at least twice weekly until estrus was observed and then at 2 days interval for 30 days. During the non-breeding season (February to March), blood samples were collected from the same number of yaks at 2-day interval for 30 days. Progesterone was determined in plasma samples by radioimmunoassay. During the breeding season, plasma progesterone at estrus was basal (< or = 0.2 ng/ml). Concentrations increased thereafter with a sharp increase during the late luteal phase, typically reaching peak levels around day 15. Concentrations then declined rapidly over the following 4 days, reaching basal levels at estrus. A high proportion (66.7%) of potential estrous periods (based on progesterone concentrations) went undetected, indicating that silent or weak estrus was a prominent problem in yak cows. During the non-breeding season, three animals were found to be cycling as determined by the patterns of plasma progesterone. Yet, behavioral symptoms of estrus were not observed in any of these yak cows. We conclude that peripheral plasma progesterone concentrations can be used to monitor cyclicity in yak cows effectively.  相似文献

Yaks are considered to be seasonally polyestrous and breeding occurs from July to November. Here we show that some yaks in peak non-breeding season do exhibit cyclic luteal activity without exhibiting any behavioral signs around expected estrus. A total of eight non-lactating yaks were selected from the Yak Farm belonging to National Research Centre on Yak for various sets of experiments. The animals were maintained as per semi range system of management. They were allowed to graze during daytime and fed concentrate mixture @2 kg/animal/day as per standard farm practices of the center. Blood samples were collected on alternate days for 30 days by jugular venipuncture from the yaks during peak breeding season (July to November) and from the same yaks in non-breeding season (February to March). The plasma samples were analysed for progesterone and estradiol-17beta by RIA and EIA procedures, respectively. During breeding season, the mean plasma progesterone at estrus was basal (相似文献

There were statistically significant correlations between some male reproductive behaviors, such as anogenital sniffing, urine sniffing, urine spraying, wallowing, bellowing, antler adorning, Antler swags mud, chasing, herding hinds, chin resting, mounting and copulating, with the fecal testosterone concentrations. These results suggested that seasonal reproductive behaviors in stags are strongly associated with circulating testosterone. We also found that some female reproductive behaviors fluctuate corresponding with changes in fecal estrogen concentrations. Although there was no direct evidence to confirm the correlations between female reproductive behaviors and fecal estrogen in our experiment, we could not rule out that reproductive activities of hinds were largely related to ovarian estrogen secretion, and estrogen is necessary for inducing female reproductive behaviors.  相似文献

In Iberian deer, calf birth date affects both milk production and composition, as well as the weight change of hind during lactation and calf growth. This study examines a five-month induced delay in calving (autumn group) in a group of 19 Iberian hinds compared to a group of 13 standard calving hinds (spring group). Fertility in the autumn group was half that of the spring one. From the former, a further two calves out of six died before or soon after birth. Successfully lactating hinds showed a greater concentration in protein, fat and lactose (P < 0.001), but did not differ from spring group in total milk yield, calf gain or weight change of hinds during lactation. However, after correcting for the greater calf or hind body weight at calving of the autumn group, this group showed lower values for these variables than the spring group. Results show that at least in Iberian deer, counter-season reproduction is possible, and that the effects on lactation variables are similar to those of a natural delay in calving.  相似文献

Twenty pluriparous, spring-calving Brahman cows were used to determine luteal competency, as measured by serum progesterone concentrations, during the first and the second postpartum estrous cycles. Prior to and after calving, all cows were maintained in good body condition on Coastal bermudagrass pasture (IFN 1-00-703). The calves were allowed to suckle ad libitum, and sterile marker bulls were maintained with the cow herd as an aid in estrus detection throughout the trial. Cow weight and body condition score were recorded within 24 hours after calving and again at the first behavioral estrus observed. From day 1 through day 14 (day 0 = estrus) of both the first and the second postpartum estrous cycles, blood samples were collected from each cow, processed to yield serum and analyzed by radioimmunoassay for progesterone concentrations. There was a higher incidence of abnormal estrous cycles following the first postpartum estrus (35%) than following the second (5%) postpartum estrus (P<0.05). The abnormal first estrous cycles were characterized by either a short luteal phase (four cows) or by standing estrus behavior without luteal tissue formation (three cows). When serum progesterone concentrations were compared for all cows during the first estrous cycle with those during the second estrous cycle, there was less progesterone released during the cycle (P<0.05) and lower peak progesterone concentrations (P<0.10) during the first estrous cycle. However, if the abnormal cows were excluded from the analyses, there was no difference (P>0.10) in either progesterone concentrations through the 14 days measured or in peak progesterone concentrations between the first and the second postpartum estrous cycles. It can be concluded from this study that the higher incidence of abnormal luteal function following the first postpartum estrus may contribute to the decreased conception rates observed when cows are bred at their first postpartum estrus.  相似文献
