Vertical distributions of six species of Pleuromamma at ten stations across the eastern North Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to San Diego were determined from oblique Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder tows to 650 m (350–450 m in the California Current). Vertical resolution was 20 m below 200 m and 5–10 m above. There was considerable overlap in surface layer distributions at night among all co-occurring species; daytime distributions showed less overlap. All species generally occurred deeper both day and night as distance offshore increased. The proportion of a species' population that remained at daytime depths during the night decreased with distance offshore. Warm water species penetrated into the California Current and nearshore region to a much greater extent than cool water species entered central gyre waters.  相似文献

A zooplankton community in the Polar Frontal Zone north of SouthGeorgia was sampled for 5 days in February 1994. Feeding ofvarious copepodite stages of six copepod species was assessedby a series of gut fluorescence/gut evacuation experiments.Feeding periodicity was compared to vertical distribution andmigration patterns, as revealed by Longhurst Hardy PlanktonRecorder (LHPR) and ring net catches. Despite chlorophyll alevels reaching only 0.8 mg m–3 and daily carbon rationsbased on phytoplankton intake being low, feeding of all thecopepods was restricted mainly to the 8 h night-time perid.During the daytime, the epipelagic community was verticallydispersed within the top 100 m. At night, upward migration bymost species led to a convergence of almost all zooplanktersin the upper half of the surface mixed layer. However, large-amplitudevertical migrations which crossed the thermocline were performedonly by Metridia lucens and Pleuromamma robusta. Although feedingby both migrants and non-migrants was mainly at night, therewas no diel signal in gut evacuation rate. The gut evacuationrates of the nine copepod species and stages differed significantly(5-fold) and were negatively related to the extent of theirdiel vertical migration. The long gut-passage times of the migratoryspecies, M.lucens and P.robusta, would have allowed them timeto defaecate some of the food eaten near the surface at depth,contributing to an active carbon transfer out of the mixed layer.However, their scarcity at this site meant that their grazingcomprised only -<1.4% of total copepod ingestion, so theircombined gut flux is likely to have been negligible (-0.4 mgcarbon day–1).  相似文献

The vertical and ontogenetic distribution, and diel verticalmigration (DVM), of Eucalanus inermis in relation to the strongvertical gradient in oxygen concentration associated with anintense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) were studied at a coastalarea off northern Chile (20–21° S). A close relationshipbetween the abundance of the whole copepod population and lowoxygen waters was found, with most developmental stages remainingnear the base of the oxycline (30–80 m) and within theupper zone of the OMZ (30–200 m). All stages performedDVM but not at all the stations, mainly between the 30–60and 60–200 m strata; a small fraction (<20%) appearedin the surface layer (0–30 m) mostly at night. This strategyof movement would result in a better utilization of food resourcessince the strong physical and chemical gradients at the baseof the oxycline and upper OMZ boundary might serve as a siteof particle accumulation. A secondary fluorescence peak was,in fact, found at all the stations, coinciding with minimaldissolved oxygen (DO, <1 mL O2 L–1) at the base ofthe oxycline or in the upper OMZ boundary. The relevance ofthe biogeochemical flux involved in this diel migration patternwas assessed by calculating the potential active input of carbonand nitrogen from the upper layers into deeper the OMZ.  相似文献

In spring, a typical dinoflagellate (Peridiniopsis niei Liu et al.) constitutes most of the phytoplankton biomass in most of eutrophic bay of Three-Gorge Reservoir (TGR, China). There are few field observations on vertical migration of the members of the genus Peridiniopsis. We studied diel vertical migration of the new species (Peridiniopsis niei) at sampling stations A and B in an eutrophic bay (Xiangxi Bay) of TGR during both day and night in March 2007. The present study suggests that vertical migration by Peridiniopsis niei is similar in nature to the migration patterns observed for other dinoflagellates. Solar irradiance incident was an important factor regulating the ascent and descent of Peridiniopsis niei. The vertical descent of Peridiniopsis niei during nighttime was restricted when the thermocline (Temperature gradient >1°C m−1) was present in the station B.  相似文献

To investigate seasonal variation in the community structureof appendicularians, vertical hauls (0–500 m) with a Norpacnet were made at an offshore station in Toyama Bay at intervalsof 2–4 weeks from February 1990 to January 1991. Additionalsamples were collected with MTD nets at 12–17 differentdepth layers between the surface and a depth of 600–700m at the same position in June, September and December 1986,and March 1992, to examine the vertical distribution of appendicularians.Twenty-one species (including two unidentified species) belongingto five genera were found, and the dominant species were dividedinto three groups by their occurrence period. Oikopleura longicauda,Fritillaria borealis f. typica and F. borealis f. sargassi occurredthroughout most of the year. Fritillaria pellucida, O. fusiformisand O. rufescens were found in summer and autumn. Oikopleuradioica was found in spring and winter. Oikopleura longicaudawas overwhelmingly the most abundant species throughout theyear. This species was always distributed in the upper 100 mdepth, with a peak at a depth of 0–50 m that correspondedto the peak of chlorophyll a concentration during the day andnight in all seasons. The day–night vertical distributionpatterns of F. borealis f. typica, F. pellucida, O. fusiformisand O. rufescens were similar to that of O. longicauda. Seasonalvariations in abundance of appendicularians are considered tobe the result of biological factors rather than physical factorssuch as temperature and salinity. A video camera inside an underwater housing was used to record the spawning activities of lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, in Kushog Lake, Ontario (Canada). Contrary to the commonly accepted belief describing lake trout as the only salmonine to spawn exclusively at night, the recordings were taken during the day. Lake trout spawning behaviour is described in detail and compared with other salmonine species. The loss of female “nest-building” and assumption of a novel itinerant strategy during which females travel across the breeding grounds accompanied by a group of males, is considered to be an important change in the evolution of the lake trout’s unique mode of spawning.  相似文献

Measurements of respiration in adult copepods at optimum concentrations in a respirometer were made at different hours of day; the amperometric method was used to measure dissolved oxygen. The migratory species from the tropical Indian Ocean and from the Black Sea displayed distinct daily variations in respiration rate and considerable difference between averages recorded in day and night hours. Such vertical migrants as Pleuromamma xiphias (Giesbr.) and Calanus euxinus Hulsemann were found to increase respiration rate late in the evening and early in the morning. No statistically reliable daily differences in the estimates of respiration were observed in copepod species like Acatria clausi (Giesbr.) and Temora discaudata (Giesbr.) which do not make long-distance migrations. In these experimental conditions the respiration rate appeared to represent changes in locomotory activity resulting from the sustained natural migratory rhythm and movements in food search. Using data available from the literature, the feeding rhythm and intensity were compared with respiration rate. This suggested that trophic status of the water may indirectly, through locomotory activity, affect the respiration rate. Increased respiration rate was suggested in the Black Sea copepod species in comparison with data obtained in earlier decades. The possibility of changes in respiration caused by changed food conditions of the environment is discussed.  相似文献

A genual pattern of photophobic responses has been observedwhich differs for calanoid copepods from freshwater, estuarineand oceanic environments. Using a video-computer system formotion analysis, the photophobic responses of light and darkadapted calanoid copepods were compared. Dark-adapted copepodswere exposed to 600 ms flashes of dim blue light at 5 s intervalswhich simulated the flashes of biolumines-cent marine zooplankton.Light-adapted copepods were exposed to 600 ms intervals of darknessat 5 s intervals to simulate the shadows of organisms passingoverhead. Four species of coastal marine copepods (Acartia hudsonica,Centropages hamatus, Pseudocalanus minutus and Temora longicornis)all showed photophobic responses to both flashes and shadows.These responses may have adaptive value to the copepods sincethey live in an environment with predators that are bioluminescentat night and cast shadows on their prey during the day (e.g.ctenophores and cnidarian medusae). Two species of oceanic copepods(Euchaeta marina, Pleuromamma abdominalis) showed strong photophobicresponses to flashes but no response to shadows. This may correspondto the abundance of bioluminescent predators on copepods inthe oceanic environment (fish, ctenophores, siphonophores, etc.)and their lack of exposure to the shadows of predators, sinceboth these species are rarely found in the euphoric zone duringthe day. Two species of freshwater copepods (Diaptomus sanguineus,Epishwa massachusettsensis) showed no similar photophobic responseto flashes of light. Marine cladocerans in the zooplankton samples collected vertically(0–500 m) with Norpac nets at 2–4 week intervalsfrom February 1990 through January 1991 at a station in ToyamaBay, southern Japan Sea, were examined. From mid-March throughearly December, cladoceran populations exhibited five distinctpeaks. in which seven species occurred and showed a species-specific pattern of seasonal distribution. In mid-July. Peniliaavirostris exhibited a prominent peak in population density.Three species of Evadne, E.nordmanni, E.spinifera and E.tergestina,showed a clear ecological separation in time. The first twospecies had a peak density in April and July. respectively,but the last species demonstrated three distinct peaks betweenJune and September. Two congeneric species of the genus Podon,P.leuckarti and P.schmackeri, also did not co-exist in time.Simultaneous horizontal hauls with MTD nets made in June andSeptember 1986 revealed a strikingly marked surface distributionof all species. Evadne nordmanni occurred in June and demonstrateda clear ‘reverse’ did vertical migration, residingin the 30 m depth during the night time and ascending up tothe uppermost water column of 0–10 m during the daytime.Among the four species which occurred in September, E.spinifera,E.tergestina and P.schmackeri also showed a reverse migrationbetween the 30 m depth during the night and the very surfaceduring the day. A different pattern was observed in P.avirostrzs,which was distributed at a depth of 30 m during both the dayand the night with no sign of diel vertical migration. We studied vertical distribution patterns of three invertebrate predators – Leptodora kindtii, Mesocyclopssp., and Thermocyclops taihokuensis– in a shallow eutrophic lake, Lake Suwa , Japan. From June to October in 2000 and 2001, we collected samples in the lake center in order to examine the vertical distribution patterns and the densities of the predators in the water column during the day (0900) and at night (2330). We also examined phototactic behavior of Leptodora in the laboratory. The three invertebrate predators showed clear migration patterns. Leptodora and Thermocyclops displayed a typical migration, avoiding the surface and maintaining a high abundance in deeper water during the day, and being distributed uniformly during the night. Mesocyclops, on the other hand, showed no clear vertical distribution pattern in the water column. However, Mesocyclops showed higher densities in the water column during the night than during the day. It suggests that they stayed just above the bottom during the day and migrated upward during the night. Leptodora also showed such a density difference between day and night. In the laboratory, Leptodora showed strong negative phototactic behavior. The observed density changes between day and night in Leptodora and Mesocyclops suggests the possible underestimation of their population density by usual sampling methods, and thus the impact of predation on populations of prey zooplankton species may also be underestimated in shallow water bodies.  相似文献

The species composition, distribution, and abundance of the hyperiid amphipods collected in March 1993 across a Gulf of Mexico cold-core ring (CCR) were analyzed. Day and night samples were collected by oblique tows (100 m to surface) with a plankton net. Hyperiids were represented by 56 species, 21 of which have not been recorded previously in gulf waters. The local oceanic community differs from that reported from adjacent neritic and neritic-oceanic areas of the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic. Overall, hyperiids were more abundant within (59% of total catch in org./1000 m3) than outside the CCR (41%). All inside CCR stations were sampled at night. Night outside vs. night inside CCR hyperiid faunas showed important differences in terms of species richness, composition and density. Cluster analysis indicated that day sta. 5 on the edge but outside the CCR was more similar to those stations inside the CCR (nighttime samples) than to the other daytime samples. Moreover, all the stations outside the CCR were clustered together independently of their day or night origin. It is suggested that the differences found were more related to differential conditions related to the CCR than to diel vertical migration. The analysis of three congeneric pairs with inverse CCR-related abundance and with known or inferred migratory patterns strengthened the idea that these pairs are probably separated by thermal preferences; also, their vertical migratory patterns seem to be abnormal inside the CCR. A relatively higher concentration of immature stages inside the CCR supports the idea that the enriched CCR waters constitute areas of increased production. Furthermore, this higher productivity enhances the chances of hyperiids to find their hosts, the gelatinous zooplankters, which are also more abundant inside the CCR.  相似文献

The effect of germination temperature, duration of high-intensitylight, and day temperature in modifying the influence of nighttemperature on the flowering process of the M-8 strain of Uplandcotton was examined. In general, night temperatures above 28°C caused the first floral branch to be formed at a higher node.The magnitude of the reaction was conditioned by the other environmentalfactors studied. Germination temperature had a slight but significanteffect on subsequent floral responses to night temperature.Plants given eight-hour periods of high-intensity light eachday were delayed more by high night temperature than those exposedto 14 or 24 hours of high light. At high day temperatures (28–32°C) the inhibiting influence of the high night temperature wasgreatly increased. High day temperatures delayed floral initiationif the night temperature was high (28–32°C) but causeda lowering of position of first floral branch when the nighttemperature was low (20–22°C). The enhancement offlowering by 32°C days and 22°C nights was expressednot only in the low node of first floral branch, but also inthe shorter time from planting to floral initiation.  相似文献

Tomato seedlings were grown in a 12-hour day at constant andalternating day and night temperatures ranging from 10°to 30° C. The pattern of results was similar at light intensitiesof 400 and 800 f.c. The maximum rate of dryweight accumulationoccurred at a constant temperature close to 25° C. The effectsof day and night temperatures on total dry weight showed a considerabledegree of independence. The optimum day temperature was 25°C irrespective of the night temperature; the optimum night temperatureincreased from 18° to 25° C over the whole range ofday temperature. On average, day temperature affected totaldry weight twice as much as night temperature. High night temperaturesto some extent compensated for low day temperatures. The optimumday and night temperatures for leaf growth were both 25°C. On average day temperature affected leaf growth one and ahalf times as much as night temperature. By 12-hourly sampling it was shown that the cotyledons and leavesgrow throughout both day and night and that high night temperatureaccelerates nocturnal growth (cotyledons by cell expansion,young leaves by cell multiplication). Plants having receivedonly one night at 25° C, as compared with 15° C, showa slightly greater assimilation during the following light period,apparently as a consequence of increased photosynthetic surface.The respiratory loss in dry weight during darkness was not significantlyaffected by temperature over the range 15–25° C.  相似文献

Three plankton sampling systems [pump, Longhurst-Hardy PlanktonRecorder (LHPR) and MOCNESS] were used to obtain vertical profilesof herring larvae off the north-east coast of England in October1986 during the International Herring Larval Survey (IHLS).A factorial sampling design allowed a comparison of the numberof herring larvae caught by depth (four levels), time of day(three levels) and gear (three levels). The size compositionof herring larvae taken in the different gears has also beenexamined. Catches taken at night were greater than those takenduring the day throughout the water column, particularly withlarger larvae. This indicates that visual avoidance of all gearsis an important factor, which increases as the larvae grow bigger.LHPR night catches were greater than in the MOCNESS and fargreater than in the pump, which indicates that avoidance isalso due to senses other than vision. Examination of the 1981–1986International Herring Larvae Survey catch data showed that night-timecatches were similar to daytime catches for herring larvae <10mm long, but night time catches caught progressively more asthe length of the larvae increased to 24 mm.  相似文献

We used a Simrad EK60 echosounder equipped with two split-beam transducers to develop a sampling strategy for assessing fish resources in Tunisian man-made lakes. Day and night surveys, using vertical and horizontal beaming, were carried out between December 2006 and February 2007, a period when fish catchability is high. Four reservoirs with differing surface areas and bathymetries were selected. Echogram analysis revealed that fish communities were mainly composed of individual targets. A few schools were detected near the surface during daylight, but these schools dispersed slightly at night. In these multispecies reservoirs, considerable day and night differences in density existed, but with no clear trend. Target strength (TS) distribution mode values detected at night were always lower or equal to daytime values. Biomass estimates were significantly higher during daytime in three reservoirs, corresponding with higher TS modal values. In the other reservoir, the biomass estimate was significantly higher during nighttime corresponding with higher mean density during this period. Using only a vertically aimed transducer in our study reservoirs would have led to an underestimate of density and biomass by 5–100% and 20–100%, respectively, depending on the man-made lake. We conclude that acoustic sampling in our reservoirs must be done during day and night and that both vertical and horizontal beaming must be used to obtain the best possible picture of the fish stocks.  相似文献

Zooplankton was sampled at 3-h intervals for a 48-h period from a coral reef of Tioman Island, Malaysia. It was size-fractionated into three size classes: 100–200, 200–335, and >335 μm using different sieves with different mesh sizes. Total zooplankton (>100 μm) abundance and biomass in the water column were high later at night (0300 h), not just after sunset as previously described in other studies. Only the largest size-fraction (>335 μm) of zooplankton significantly differed in biomass and abundance between day and night. The increase in the large zooplankton later in the night is suggested to be caused by the advection of pelagic species into the reef. This work has provided a measurement of the variation of zooplankton community over coral reef that can exist on a scale of hours.  相似文献

A rapid and powerful escape response decreases predation risk in planktonic copepods. Calanoid copepods are sensitive to small and brief hydrodynamic disturbances: they respond with multiple nerve impulses to a vibrating sphere. Some species, such as Pleuromamma xiphias and Labidocera madurae, respond with very large spikes (1–4 mV), whereas maximum spike heights are an order of magnitude smaller in others, such as Undinula vulgaris and Neocalanus gracilis. A comparative study of the escape responses showed that all species reacted within 10 ms of the initiation of a hydrodynamic stimulus. However, U. vulgaris and N. gracilis had significantly shorter reaction times (minimum reaction times: 1.5 ms and 1.6 ms) than the other two, P. xiphias (6.6 ms) and L. madurae (3.1 ms). Examination of the first antenna and the central nervous system using transmission electron microscopy revealed extensive myelination of sensory and motor axons in the two species with the shorter reaction times. Axons of the other two species resembled typical crustacean unmyelinated fibers. A survey of 20 calanoids revealed that none of the species in two of the more ancient superfamilies possessed myelin, but myelination was present in the species from three more recently-evolved superfamilies. Spray carnation plants were grown for several weeks under an8 h day/16 h night regime at temperatures of approximately 21°C by day and 6, 17, or 30 °C by night. Subsequently,the rates of photosynthesis and transpiration at 20 °C weresimilar. This contrasts with evidence published for some otherspecies. Night temperature had only a slight effect on the plant's growthrate. Leaf area ratios were also similar between treatmentsand for two intervals covering a 5 week period. At the highnight temperature flowers were initiated sooner and there werefewer side shoots per plant than at the lower temperatures. The implications of these results for the optimization of theclimatic environment are discussed briefly, and the resultsare compared with those reported for other species.  相似文献
