Total and free plasma testosterone (T) were determined in male homosexuals. While total T showed no significant difference to a heterosexual control group, apparently free T in plasma was significantly lower (p less than 0.001) in 35 male homosexuals (mean +/- SD = 10.7 +/- 3.3 ng/100 ml) than in 38 male heterosexuals of similar age (13.3 +/- 4.5 ng/100 ml).  相似文献

Previous research suggests that prenatal testosterone affects the 2D:4D finger ratio in humans, and it has been speculated that prenatal testosterone also affects gender identity differentiation. If both things are true, then one would expect to find an association between the 2D:4D ratio and gender identity. We measured 2D:4D in two samples of patients with gender identity disorder (GID). In Study 1, we compared the 2D:4D ratios of 96 adult male and 51 female patients with GID to that of 90 heterosexual male and 112 heterosexual female controls. In Study 2, we compared the 2D:4D ratios of 67 boys and 34 girls with GID to that of 74 control boys and 72 control girls. In the sample of adults with GID, we classified their sexual orientation as either homosexual or non-homosexual (in relation to their birth sex) to examine whether or not there were any within-group differences as a function of sexual orientation. In the sample of adult men with GID (both homosexual and non-homosexual) and children with GID, we found no evidence of an altered 2D:4D ratio relative to same-sex controls. However, women with GID had a significantly more masculinized ratio compared to the control women. This last finding was consistent with the prediction that a variance in prenatal hormone exposure contributes to a departure from a sex-typical gender identity in women.  相似文献

Portacaval anastomosis causes delayed growth, decreased testes and liver weights, and elevated estradiol serum levels in male rats compared with sham-operated controls. Female rats treated with portacaval anastomosis grow at a normal rate despite changes in liver weight and estradiol levels similar to those observed in the male rats. This study examined the pituitary gonadal axis in both genders in this animal model. The rats receiving portacaval anastomosis were compared with both pair-fed and sham-operated control groups. Portacaval anastomosis decreased serum testosterone and increased estradiol in the male animals, while both testosterone and estradiol were increased in the females compared with gender-matched pair-fed and sham controls. Because pair feeding lowers male testosterone to a lesser extent, impaired nutrition may partially account for the decrease in the males treated with portacaval anastomosis. The ratio of estradiol to testosterone increased following anastomosis in male rats, but it was decreased in similarly treated females. Portacaval and anastomosis decreased luteinizing hormone without changing follicle-stimulating hormone in both male and female rats compared with sham-operated controls. Growth hormone was significantly decreased in male portacaval-treated rats compared with sham- and pair-fed animals. Increased insulin levels were found in both male and female pair-fed and portacaval anastomosis-treated animals. These data suggest that following portacaval anastomosis in rats, growth, serum testosterone, estradiol to testosterone ratios, and growth hormone are altered in a gender-specific manner with gender-independent changes in insulin and luteinizing hormone levels. These gender-specific effects may protect the portacaval anastomosis-treated female rat from growth retardation.  相似文献

The Darwinian paradox of male homosexuality in humans is examined, i.e. if male homosexuality has a genetic component and homosexuals reproduce less than heterosexuals, then why is this trait maintained in the population? In a sample of 98 homosexual and 100 heterosexual men and their relatives (a total of over 4600 individuals), we found that female maternal relatives of homosexuals have higher fecundity than female maternal relatives of heterosexuals and that this difference is not found in female paternal relatives. The study confirms previous reports, in particular that homosexuals have more maternal than paternal male homosexual relatives, that homosexual males are more often later-born than first-born and that they have more older brothers than older sisters. We discuss the findings and their implications for current research on male homosexuality.  相似文献

Some propositions on male and female sexual orientation will be considered. Some of these are established; others are more speculative. The aim is to offer some notes towards a coherent, comprehensive theory of sexual orientation. 1. The distinction between butch and femme lesbians seems real rather than a social construct. 2. High levels of prenatal steroid hormones seem to be causally associated with the sexual orientation of butch lesbians. However it is not established whether the causal process operates prenatally or postnatally (or both). This is so because prenatal hormone levels are thought to correlate positively with postnatal hormone levels. And high postnatal hormone levels may facilitate homosexual behaviour as a consequence of sensation-seeking. 3. Male bisexuals also are interpreted to have been exposed to high prenatal testosterone levels. But (for reasons similar to those outlined above in regard to butch lesbians) it is unclear whether these have a direct prenatal effect on the brain or whether they are precursors of high postnatal testosterone levels, which are associated with male bisexual orientation by promoting sensation-seeking behaviour. 4. Postnatal learning processes seem to be causally involved in the sexual orientation of some femme lesbians and some exclusive male homosexuals. 5. Some homosexual men have genes that predispose to their sexual orientation. 6. The same may apply to some lesbians, but such genes have not, as far as I know, been identified. 7. People (of both sexes) who engage in same-sex sexual behaviour may be classified simultaneously in two ways, viz (1) 'active' vs 'passive' and (2) those who do and those who do not engage (or consider engaging) in sex with members of the opposite sex. Ex hypothesi, some of the 'active' ones initiate some of the 'passive' ones. The active ones are driven more by hormones and the passive ones by psychosocial factors. The active males contain a substantial proportion of self-identified bisexuals; and the active females a substantial proportion of self-identified butches. 8. These two active categories (butch lesbians and male bisexuals) share a number of endocrinological, psychological, morphological and behavioural features vis-a-vis their exclusively homosexual and heterosexual peers. Methods of testing some of these ideas are presented.  相似文献

A variety of social, developmental, biological and genetic factors influence sexual orientation in males. Thus, several hypotheses have attempted to explain the sustenance of genetic factors that influence male homosexuality, despite decreased fecundity within the homosexuals. Kin selection, the existence of maternal effects and two forms of balancing selection, sexually antagonistic selection and overdominance, have been proposed as compensatory mechanisms for reduced homosexual fecundity. Here, we suggest that the empirical support for kin selection and maternal effects cannot account for the low universal frequency and stability of the distribution of homosexuals. To identify the responsible compensatory mechanism, we analyzed fecundity in 2,100 European female relatives, i.e., aunts and grandmothers, of either homosexual or heterosexual probands who were matched in terms of age, culture and sampling strategy. Female relatives were chosen to avoid the sampling bias of the fraternal birth order effect, which occurs when indirectly sampling mothers though their homosexual sons. We observed that the maternal aunts and grandmothers of homosexual probands were significantly more fecund compared with the maternal aunts and maternal grandmothers of the heterosexual probands. No difference in fecundity was observed in the paternal female lines (grandmothers or aunts) from either of the two proband groups. Moreover, due to the selective increase in maternal female fecundity, the total female fecundity was significantly higher in homosexual than heterosexual probands, thus compensating for the reduced fecundity of homosexuals. Altogether, these data support an X-linked multi-locus sexually antagonistic hypothesis rather than an autosomal multi-locus overdominance hypothesis.  相似文献

Objective: This study was carried out to investigate the role of sex in the regulation of the hypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal (HPA) axis and its relationship with testosterone levels in male and female obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: Twenty‐two obese men (OB‐M) and 29 obese women (OB‐W) participated in the study. Two groups of normal weight men (NW‐M) and women (NW‐W), respectively, served as controls. In basal conditions, blood concentrations of major androgens, sex hormone—binding protein, and gonadotropins were assessed, and the free androgen index (testosterone ×100/ sex hormone‐binding globulin) was calculated. All subjects underwent a combined corticotropin‐releasing hormone plus arginine‐vasopressin stimulation test. Results: OB‐M and NW‐M had higher basal adrenal cortical tropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol levels than their female counterparts. In addition, ACTH, but not cortisol basal, levels were significantly higher in obese than in normal weight controls in both sexes. OB‐W had a higher response than OB‐M to the combined corticotropin‐releasing hormone plus arginine‐vasopressin test of both ACTH and cortisol [expressed as incremental percentage of area under the curve (AUC%)]. The same finding was present between NW‐W and NW‐M. Basal luteinizing hormone levels were negatively correlated to ACTHAUC% in both OB‐W and OB‐M. In the OB‐W, however, a positive correlation was found between cortisolAUC% and testosterone (r = 0.48; p = 0.002), whereas a tendency toward a negative correlation was present in OB‐M. Discussion: In conclusion, we have shown a significant positive relationship between the activity of the HPA axis and testosterone in obese women, which suggests a partial responsibility of increased HPA axis activity in determining testosterone levels. In addition, it clearly seems that, as reported in normal weight subjects, a sex difference in the HPA axis activity still persists even in the presence of obesity.  相似文献

Eight ovariectomized female vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were tested in heterosexual and isosexual pairs, under estradiol and testosterone treatments. Pairs were tested under two different experimental situations in which the male was either restrained or left free. There were only small behavioral changes across the treatments, involving mainly male responses. Erection time, frequency of intromission, ejaculation, and olfactory investigation increased during estradiol treatment whereas during administration of testosterone erection time, the number of approaches, contacts, and olfactory investigations decreased. Female behaviors were relatively independent of hormone treatment showing only the disappearance of negative responses with estradiol and an increase of yawns with testosterone. Female behaviors were performed at a higher level with male partners than with other females, and the frequencies of spontaneous presents varied with the sex of partner. It is suggested that in vervet monkeys both estradiol and testosterone affect female attractivity, estradiol further influences receptivity, whereas proceptivity appears to be less directly involved in sexual interactions and more related to social context.  相似文献

Diurnal variations of serum sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) in five normal adult men and five normal adult women were investigated. SHBG binding capacity was measured by both polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and dextran-coated charcoal technique (DCC); T and E2 were assayed by RIA and free T and free E2 were determined by means of equilibrium dialysis. In male subjects the variations of SHBG binding capacity was associated with the changes of total T, free T and T/SHBG index, which had the highest concentrations in the morning and the lowest levels in the evening during the 24 h test period, but percentage free T remained unchanged. Serum protein concentrations did not change significantly during 24 h. No significant diurnal changes of SHBG binding capacity, total E2, free E2, percentage free E2 and percentage free T were found in female subjects in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, although significant fluctuations of total T, free T and T/SHBG index were observed throughout the day. The results suggested that SHBG may play a buffer role in the presence of fluctuations of testosterone production during 24 h period, allowing stabilization of a bioactive fraction of the hormone both in normal adult male and female. However, the concentrations of T in normal adult women may be too low to drive any change of SHBG levels while there were no significant variations of E2 throughout a day in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.  相似文献

Rat costochondral growth plate chondrocytes exhibit sex-specific and cell maturation dependent responses to testosterone. Only male cells respond to testosterone, although testosterone receptors are present in both male and female cells, suggesting other mechanisms are involved. We examined the hypothesis that the sex-specific response of rat costochondral cartilage cells to testosterone requires further metabolism of the hormone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Resting zone (RC) and growth zone (GC, prehypertrophic and upper hypertrophic zones) chondrocytes from male and female Sabra strain rats exhibited sex-specific responses to testosterone and DHT: only male cells were responsive. Testosterone and DHT treatment for 24 h caused a comparable dose-dependent increase in [3H]-thymidine incorporation in quiescent preconfluent cultures of male GC cells, and a comparable increase in alkaline phosphatase specific activity in confluent cultures. RC cells responded in a differential manner to testosterone and DHT. Testosterone decreased DNA synthesis in male RC cells but DHT had no effect and alkaline phosphatase specific activity of male RC cells was unaffected by either hormone. Inhibition of steroid 5alpha-reductase activity with finasteride (1, 5, or 10 microg/ml), reduced the response of male GC cells to testosterone in a dose-dependent manner, indicating that metabolism to DHT was required. RT-PCR showed that both male and female cells expressed mRNAs for steroid 5alpha-reductase type 1 but lacked mRNAs for the type 2 form of the enzyme. Male cells also exhibited 5alpha-reductase activity but activity of this enzyme was undetectable in female cells. These observations show that sex-specific responses of rat growth zone chondrocytes to testosterone requires the further metabolism of the hormone to DHT and that the effect of DHT in the male growth plate is maturation-state dependent. Failure of female chondrocytes to respond to testosterone may reflect differences in testosterone metabolism, since these cells possess greater ability to aromatize the hormone to estradiol.  相似文献

Plasma prolactin values of 20 male homosexuals of Kinsey rating 6 were compared with plasma prolactin values of 15 male heterosexuals of Kinsey rating 0. There was no difference in mean plasma prolactin value between the two groups. These findings are at variance with those reported by Kolodny et al. [Kolodny, R. C., Jacobs, L. S., Masters, W. H., Toro, G., and Daughaday, W. H. (1971a). Plasma gonadotrophins and prolactin in male homosexuals. Lancet2, 18–20] in which plasma prolactin was found to be elevated in individuals of Kinsey rating 6 as compared to heterosexual controls. The present investigation, therefore, fails to confirm a relationship between sexual orientation in males and plasma prolactin level.  相似文献

Early exposure to sex steroids is thought to be important in mediating the differentiation of male-typical sexual orientation. Bone morphology is a marker of childhood sex steroid exposure, because estrogens and androgens control sexual dimorphism in skeletal size. Anthropometric analysis of heterosexuals and homosexuals indicates that those bones, which become sexually dimorphic in childhood, but not those which become sexually dimorphic after puberty, are different in length in homosexuals and heterosexuals. Persons with a sexual preference for males have less long bone growth in the arms, legs and hands, than those with sexual preference for females. The data support the hypothesis that male homosexuals have had less steroid exposure during development than male heterosexuals and that female homosexuals have had greater steroid exposure during development than their heterosexual counterparts.  相似文献

Sexual behavior and the increase in plasma hormone levels of LH, prolactin, and testosterone associated with sexual behavior were examined in three age groups of sexually naive male rats. The two younger groups (5- and 11-month-old) mated normally and their behavioral latencies decreased significantly following sexual experience. Both plasma testosterone and LH concentrations increased significantly following entrance of a receptive female into the mating arena. Plasma prolactin levels rose but not significantly. However, the 27-month-old rats neither mated nor showed an increase in the three plasma hormone concentrations during exposure to a receptive female. Only basal testosterone levels were significantly lower than those of the younger animals. Low testosterone levels possibly contributed to deficiencies in both behavior and its associated hormone release. The monitoring of sexual behavior was facilitated by a computer, programmed to record, store, and analyze behavioral events.  相似文献

Face perception is modulated by sexual preference   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Face perception is mediated by a distributed neural system in the human brain . The response to faces is modulated by cognitive factors such as attention, visual imagery, and emotion ; however, the effects of gender and sexual orientation are currently unknown. We used fMRI to test whether subjects would respond more to their sexually preferred faces and predicted such modulation in the reward circuitry. Forty heterosexual and homosexual men and women viewed photographs of male and female faces and assessed facial attractiveness. Regardless of their gender and sexual orientation, all subjects similarly rated the attractiveness of both male and female faces. Within multiple, bilateral face-selective regions in the visual cortex, limbic system, and prefrontal cortex, similar patterns of activation were found in all subjects in response to both male and female faces. Consistent with our hypothesis, we found a significant interaction between stimulus gender and the sexual preference of the subject in the thalamus and medial orbitofrontal cortex, where heterosexual men and homosexual women responded more to female faces and heterosexual women and homosexual men responded more to male faces. Our findings suggest that sexual preference modulates face-evoked activation in the reward circuitry.  相似文献

This study was designed to investigate the reproductive fertility by the natural breeding of cloned male cats with domestic female cats, and to measure endocrine hormone concentration related to male reproduction such as testosterone, leutinizing hormone (LH), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Cloned A, B, C, and D cats produced three, two, four, and five kittens after natural mating with four domestic female cats, respectively, despite later puberty of the cloned D cat than those of the other cloned male cats. Three of the 14 kittens expressed an odd eye color, which was produced by 1 and 2 from cloned A and B cats. The eye color of the other F1 kittens varied from nine brown to two blue. Body weight at birth ranged from 72.9 to 134.0 g. Although clone D had a poorer libido and entered puberty later than those of the other cloned male cats, he produced gonadal hormones within the average range. Four of the cloned male cats had normal fertility. The concentration of gonadal hormones in cloned male cats was similar to two control and donor cats. The concentration of testosterone was not significantly different among clones A, B, C, D, and control cats (5.99 +/- 5.68; 3.46 +/- 2.81; 6.41 +/- 2.17; 3.75 +/- 0.34; 4.0 +/- 3.63 ng/mL, p < 0.05). The concentrations of LH and FSH were not significantly different among the cloned cats (p < 0.05). Seven male and seven female (in total 14) kittens were produced by the natural breeding with four domestic female cats. These results indicated that cloned male cats have normal reproductive fertility and lie within the normal range of gonadal hormone production. All F1 kittens were produced by natural breeding and delivery, and are still alive and have normal growth health (27 months age).  相似文献

Eight male naked mole-rats, from three colonies were studied in captivity. When non-breeding male naked mole-rats were removed from their colonies and paired with a non-breeding female, or removed and housed singly for 6 weeks before pairing with a female, concentrations of urinary testosterone and plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) increased significantly (P less than 0.05). Concentration of these hormones were highest while the males were singly housed: urinary testosterone (mean +/- s.e.m.) increased from 8.2 +/- 1.3 ng/mg urinary creatinine (Cr) in a non-breeder in a colony to 49.1 +/- 5.5 ng/mg Cr when singly housed and 21.8 +/- 2.5 ng/mg Cr when paired with a female. Plasma LH concentrations increased from 4.7 +/- 1.0 miu/ml when a non-breeder in a colony to 19.8 +/- 4.0 miu/ml when singly housed and 9.9 +/- 1.1 miu/ml when paired with a female. After pairing with a female, the pattern of urinary testosterone secretion in the male was synchronized with the ovarian cycle of the female mate, such that urinary testosterone concentrations were significantly higher during the early follicular phase of the female's cycle (P less than 0.05). These results suggest that active suppression of reproductive physiology by social cues occurs in non-breeding male naked mole-rats, and that this is readily reversible if social cues are removed and males are housed singly. When a male was subsequently paired with a female, endocrine suppression was partially reimposed on the reproductively active males, such that urinary testosterone concentrations were suppressed to values similar to those in non-breeding males, except for periods prior to mating.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Hall and Kimura (1994) studied the relation between dermatoglyphic asymmetry and male sexual orientation in a sample of 66 homosexual and 182 heterosexual men. They found that more homosexual men possessed a leftward dermatoglyphic asymmetry than did heterosexual men. In this paper, we report a comparative study about the relationship between sexual orientation and dermatoglyphic characteristics, including 60 homosexual men, 76 heterosexual men, and 60 heterosexual women, recruited from the general population, and also from a gay-rights nongovernmental organization, in Salvador, Brazil. Ulnar loops were the most frequent dermatoglyphic pattern in all groups, followed by whorls, arches, and radial loops. A chi-square analysis comparing the frequencies of the patterns in the three groups only showed an excess of ulnar loops in women (p < 0.05) and arches in men (p < 0.01), but did not reveal significant differences between homosexuals and the other groups studied. There was no significant difference between gay and straight men on total ridge count. We found a preponderance of rightward asymmetry in homosexual and heterosexual men, as well as in heterosexual women. Our results do not agree with Hall and Kimura's data indicating that more gay men possessed the minority leftward asymmetry than did straight men. There was no significant difference in leftward asymmetry in the sample studied. The results reported in this paper do not support any relation between dermatoglyphic asymmetry and male sexual orientation, and, thus, any hypothesis concerning a biological intrauterine contribution to adult sexual orientation somehow associated with dermatoglyphic development.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To document long-term medical, surgical and psychosexual outcome of individuals with congenital micropenis (13 males, 5 females). METHODS: Physical measurements from childhood were collected retrospectively from medical records and at adulthood by physical examination. An adult psychosexual assessment was conducted with a written questionnaire and oral discussion. RESULTS: Adult penile length was below the normal mean in all men. Three women had vaginoplasty resulting in normal length. All men reported good or fair erections but 50% were dissatisfied with their genitalia. Dissatisfaction with body image resulted from having a small penis (66%), inadequate body hair (50%), gynecomastia (33%) and youthful appearance (33%). Ten men were heterosexual, 1 homosexual and 2 bisexual. Among women, 4 (80%) were dissatisfied with their genitalia. Three women reported average libido with orgasm and were also heterosexual. Two women had no sexual interest or experience. Finally, males were masculine and females feminine in their gender-role identity, and both groups were satisfied with their sex of rearing. CONCLUSIONS: Regarding choice of gender, male sex of rearing can result in satisfactory genito-sexual function. Female gender can also result in success, however it requires extensive feminizing surgery.  相似文献

We pursued our functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of the neural correlates of romantic love in 24 subjects, half of whom were female (6 heterosexual and 6 homosexual) and half male (6 heterosexual and 6 homosexual). We compared the pattern of activity produced in their brains when they viewed the faces of their loved partners with that produced when they viewed the faces of friends of the same sex to whom they were romantically indifferent. The pattern of activation and de-activation was very similar in the brains of males and females, and heterosexuals and homosexuals. We could therefore detect no difference in activation patterns between these groups.  相似文献

Three heterosexual groups of six to eight monkeys were studied; all females were ovariectomized, whereas males were either intact or castrated. Aggressive hierarchies were evident in all groups, with females generally outranking males. When females were treated with estradiol, all males looked more frequently at the latters' sexual skin swellings, but only one male who was both dominant and intact copulated with them. Thus, either castration or low rank resulted in decreased levels of sexual behavior in male talapoins. The sexual behavior of dominant castrated males was restored by testosterone therapy, whereas subordinate castrates never copulated, even after large doses of testosterone, though penile erections and ejaculatory reflex (during masturbation) were restored. Following removal of a dominant male, the sexual behavior of the next male in rank was restored, provided he was not castrated and untreated. In contrast to males, female talapoins showed no consistent correlation between their rank and sexual activity. Estradiol therapy was without overall effect upon the frequency of female mounting behavior, though some females mounted and presented to one another more often. Estradiol treatment also caused females to present to males more frequently, but only to those that were sexually active (i.e., who mounted females).  相似文献
