All models of self-motion from optical flow assume the instantaneous velocity field as input. We tested this assumption for human observers using random-dot displays that simulated translational and circular paths of movement by manipulating the lifetime and displacement of individual dots. For translational movement, observers were equally accurate in judging direction of heading from a velocity field with a two-frame dot life and a direction field in which the magnitudes of displacement were randomized while the radial pattern of directions was preserved, but at chance with a speed field in which the directions were randomized, preserving only magnitude. Accuracy declined with increasing noise in vector directions, but remained below 2.6° with a 90° noise envelope. Thus, the visual system uses the radial morphology of vector directions to determine translational heading and can tolerate large amounts of noise in this pattern. For circular movement, observers were equally accurate with a 2-frame velocity field, 3-frame acceleration displays, and 2-frame and 3-frame direction fields, consistent with the use of the pattern of vector directions to locate the center of rotation. The results indicate that successive independent velocity fields are sufficient for perception of translational and circular heading.  相似文献

The mangrove killifish Rivulus marmoratus was reared at 25°±1°C and 17ppt salinity from 0 to 100 days after hatching (DAH), and its early development was described by examining growth and morphometric parameters, meristic characters (vertebral and fin-ray counts), bone-cartilage development, and pigmentation. Growth was isometric for preanal length, head length, snout length, body depth, pectoral-fin length, dorsal-fin length, anal-fin length, and caudal-peduncle depth. Negative allometric growth was observed in eye diameter and gape size. Meristic counts (mean±SD) for vertebrae (34.2±0.4) and dorsal- (8.6±0.5), anal- (11.4±0.5), and caudal-fin rays (30.2±0.8) were complete at 0 DAH (n=5), whereas pectoral-fin rays and pelvic-fin rays were complete by 30 DAH (14.5±0.4, n=5) and 60 DAH (4.2±0.8, n=5). Full ossification of meristic elements proceeded in the following sequence: vertebrae (by 30 DAH), caudal-, dorsal-, and anal-fin rays (by 60 DAH), pectoral-fin rays (between 60 DAH and 100 DAH), and pelvic-fin rays (by 100 DAH). Both morphological characters and meristic counts indicate that this species can be considered to be a juvenile after 9.8mm in standard length (20 DAH).  相似文献

Temperature dependencies were established for the egg-to-mummy and mummy-to-adult phases, for mummy mortality, and for parasitism of Aphidius ervi Haliday, Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez, and Praon volucre (Haliday) (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae), three parasitoids of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera, Aphididae), at 8°C, 12°C, 16°C, 20°C, and 25°C on winter wheat (cv. Haven). A physiological model described temperature-dependent development over the full temperature range, whereas a linear model was fitted for data above 8°C and used to estimate the lower temperature thresholds and day-degrees (° D) required for development. The thresholds for A. ervi were 2.2°C for egg-mummy development and 6.6°C for mummy-adult development, those for A. rhopalosiphi were 4.5°C and 7.2°C, and those for P. volucre were 3.8°C and 5.5°C. The time to develop into mummies and adults differed significantly between the three species: A. ervi development into mummies required an average of 159 ° D, while development into adults took an average of 73 ° D. The corresponding average times required for A. rhopalosiphi and P. volucre to develop mummies were 124° D and 126° D, while their development into adults required an average of 70° D and 150° D, respectively. Mummy mortality was 25–35% at 8°C and less at the higher temperatures tested, but began to increase again at 25°C, showing a quadratic relationship between mortality and temperature. Parasitization was very low or, in the case of P. volucre, absent up to 12°C and thereafter increased with increasing temperature. The relationship between parasitization, recorded as percent aphids mummified, and temperature was linear at the temperatures tested and depended on species. A. ervisuperparasitized 11.1% aphids at 20°C and 16.6% aphids at 25°C, whereas superparasitism was low in A. rhopalosiphi and absent in P. volucre. From 16°C to 25°C the P. volucre sex ratio increased. For A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi there was no trend with temperature, but at 20°C and 25°C it was close to even. Field data for 1996 and 1997 allowed for a comparison of actual and expected emergence of overwintering mummies. In both years, parasitoids were predicted to have emerged from overwintering mummies well in advance of the onset of aphid infestation, and more than a month earlier than the first parasitized aphids were found in winter wheat. Observations from trap plants in other crops supported the predictions of the models. Other factors that can affect biological control by cereal aphid parasitoids are discussed.  相似文献

Delicious apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) and several of its strains, which have been difficult to root in vitro, were successfully propagated with rooting percentages up to 100%. The combination of treatments used to achieve this result included placing the shoots on rooting medium in the dark at 30°C for the first week of the rooting stage, then moving them to a regime of 16 hr light-8 hr dark at 25°C. The rooting medium contained half strength Murashige and Skoog salts plus 1.2 M thiamine HCl, 0.56 mM myo-inositol, 1 mM phloroglucinol (PG), 1.4 M indolebutyric acid (IBA), 1.3 M gibberellic acid (GA3), 87.6 mM sucrose, and 7 g l–1 Difco Bacto agar. Dark treatment applied during the proliferation stage (etiolation) was less effective than one applied at the beginning of the rooting stage. The optimum length of dark treatment during rooting was 4 to 7 days. Increasing the temperature from 25°C to 30°C improved rooting of Delicious, Royal Red Delicious, and Vermont Spur Delicious in the absence of PG but generally had less effect in the presence of PG. Further increase in temperature to 35°C stimulated rooting of Royal Red Delicious but reduced rooting of Vermont Spur Delicious. Transfer of the cuttings to auxin-free medium after 1 week had no effect on percentage rooting and increased the number of roots per cutting for only 1 of 4 cultivars tested and then only in the presence of PG. In general PG stimulated rooting of Delicious and its strains, but had no effect on Golden Delicious.  相似文献

In the present study we investigated the response to iron (Fe) deficiency in two cultivars of Festuca rubra L. (Rubina and Barnica) used in correction of chlorosis of fruit trees cultivated on calcareous soils. We found that a Fe-chelating compound, identified as 2-deoxymugineic acid (DMA), was secreted from the roots in response to Fe-deficiency in both cultivars. The amount of DMA secreted into solution increased with the development of Fe-deficiency. The secretion showed a distinct diurnal rhythm characterized by a secretion peak at between 2 and 5 hours after sunrise at 20°C. However, this secretion peak was delayed by 3 hour at low temperature (<10°C) and occurred 3 h earlier at high temperature (30°C). When water used for the collection of root exudates was pre-warmed (25°C) or pre-cooled (10°C), this led to an earlier or a delayed secretion compared to control (15°C) under the same air temperature, respectively. Short-term shading treatment did not affect the secretion pattern of DMA. These results demonstrate that the secretion time of DMA from the roots is, at least partly controlled by the temperature in the root environment. Overall, these findings suggest that the ability of Festuca rubra to prevent Fe chlorosis symptoms (`re-greening effect') of associated fruit trees is partially related to the secretion of DMA which increase Fe availability in calcareous soils.  相似文献

From June 1994 to October 1995, I conducted a study of the feeding ecology of one group of black-headed uacaris (Cacajao melanocephalus melanocephalus) in Pico da Neblina National Park, Brazil, near the Venezuelan border (01°10N to 00°26S, 65°03W to 66°52W). Of a total of 429 feeding records, 89% corresponded to fruits from which black-headed uacaris ate ripe and unripe seeds, mesocarps and arils. Seeds were the single most important food item year-around, corresponding to 81% of the feeding records for fruits. Black-headed uacaris used 120 different plant species in 32 families as food. The 3 most important plant species in their diet, Micrandra spruceana, Eperua leucantha, and Hevea braziliensis (all trees), accounted for 38% of the feeding records for fruits. These species produced fruits that were protected by very hard green husks, were barochorous, did not have fleshy mesocarps, and were slow to mature, thus being available as unripe fruits for long periods. The second and third most important species in the diet of black uacaris, Eperua leucantha and Hevea braziliensis, were dominant in the forest: approximately 30% of trees 10 cm dbh sampled in a 2-ha botanical transect at the study site. I discuss the formation of large social groups of black-headed uacaris in Pico da Neblina National Park in light of the peculiar floristic composition of the study site.  相似文献

Of 49 microbial strains screened for their capabilities to transform ginsenoside Rb1, Rhizopus stolonifer and Curvularia lunata produced four key metabolites: 3-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl-(1,2)--d-glucopyranosyl]- 20-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl]-3,12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene (1), 3-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl-(1,2)--d- glucopyranosyl]-20-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl]-3,12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ol (2), 3-O-[-d-gluco- pyranosyl-(1,2)--d-glucopyranosyl]-3, 12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene (3), and 3-O--d-glucopyranosyl-3, 12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene (4), identified by TOF-MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral data. Metabolites 1, 3 and 4 were from the incubation with R. stolonifer, and 1 and 2 from the incubation with C. lunata. Compound 2 was identified as a new compound.  相似文献

Summary As clonal plants grow they move through space. The movement patterns that result can be complex and difficult to interpret without the aid of models. We developed a stochastic simulation model of clonal growth in the tall goldenrod, Solidago altissima. Our model was calibrated with field data on the clonal expansion of both seedlings and established clones, and model assumptions were verified by statistical analyses. When simulations were based on empirical distributions with long rhizome lengths, there was greater dispersal, less leaf overlap, and less spatial aggregation than when simulations were based on distributions with comparatively short rhizome lengths. For the field data that we utilized, variation in rhizome lengths had a greater effect than variation for either branching angles or rhizome initiation points (see text). We also found that observed patterns of clonal growth in S. altissima did not cause the formation of fairy rings. However, simulations with an artificial distribution of branching angles demonstrate that fairy rings can result solely from a plant's clonal morphology.Stochastic simulation models that incorporated variation in rhizome lengths, branching angles, and rhizome initiation points produced greater dispersal and less leaf overlap than deterministic models. Thus, variation for clonal growth parameters may increase the efficiency of substrate exploration by increasing the area covered and by decreasing the potential for intraclonal competition. We also demonstrated that ramet displacements were slightly, but consistently lower in stochastic simulation models than in random-walk models. This difference was due to the incorporation of details on rhizome bud initiation into stochastic simulation models, but not random-walk models. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of deterministic, stochastic simulation, and random-walk models of clonal growth.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of dikaryotic haustoria of sevenPucciniastrum species,Thekopsora galii, Naohidemyces vaccinii, andCalyptospora goeppertiana was investigated.Pucciniastrum actinidiae, P. agrimoniae, P. pyrolae, andCalyptospora goeppertiana revealed haustoria whose necks were wrapped by a fold of the extrahaustorial matrix. The matrix-fold ofCalyptospora goeppertiana was characteristically shaped.Pucciniastrum circaeae, P. epilobii, P. hikosanense, P. styracinum, Thekopsora galii, andNaohidemyces vaccinii showed typical haustorial necks which were not sheathed by a matrix-fold. Haustorial necks which were wrapped by a fold of the extrahaustorial matrix were designated velopedunculate, and those which were naked gymnopedunculate. The application of haustorial ultrastructure as a character for use in systematics is discussed.Part 112 of the series Studies in Heterobasidiomycetes.  相似文献

Saccharomyces cerevisiae-based ethanol fermentations were conducted in batch culture, in a single stage continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), a multistage CSTR, and in a fermentor contaminated with Lactobacillus that corresponded to the first fermentor of the multistage CSTR system. Using a glucose concentration of 260 g l–1 in the medium, the highest ethanol concentration reached was in batch (116gl–1), followed by the multistage CSTR (106gl–1), and the single stage CSTR continuous production system (60gl–1). The highest ethanol productivity at this sugar concentration was achieved in the multistage CSTR system where a productivity of 12.7gl–1h–1 was seen. The other fermentation systems in comparison did not exceed an ethanol productivity of 3gl–1h–1. By performing a continuous ethanol fermentation in multiple stages (having a total equivalent working volume of the tested single stage), a 4-fold higher ethanol productivity was achieved as compared to either the single stage CSTR, or the batch fermentation.  相似文献

The - and -subunit gene-coding regionscontain 489 bp and 519 bp, respectively. The -subunit gene is upstreamfrom the -subunit gene, with a 111-bp segment separating them.Similarities between the -subunits of S. maxima and nine othercyanobacteria were between 58% and 99%, as were those between the -subunits. The maximum similarity between the - and -subunits from S. maxima was 27%.  相似文献

Electrophoretic mobilities of three hemoglobins (Hb1, Hb2, and Hb3) were studied in 15 populations of brine shrimps. Genetic segregation data support the model that Hb2 contains n -polypeptides and n -polypeptides; Hb1 contains 2n -polypeptides. Hb3 contains neither - nor -polypeptides. There is no evidence of linkage of and loci with each other or with the locus (or loci) which governs Hb3 or with the nonhomologous portion of the sex chromosomes. Hemoglobins of different populations may be hybridized in vitro by incubation at high temperature. Reversible dissociation to subunits which contain only one ( or ) polypeptide occurs at 40 C (for Hb1) and at 50 C (for Hb2).Supported by Grant HD-11445 from the National Institutes of Health.  相似文献

Summary Sodium and water balance ofDytiscus verticalis in fresh water were investigated under three feeding regimes: unfed, and fed a diet either low or high in sodium chloride. Unfed sodium influx was 0.13 and sodium efflux was 0.74 moles/100 gwm·h. These values are low in comparison with most freshwater animals. The electrical potential difference across the integument in artificial soft water (ASW) was about 150 mV smaller than the potential necessary to maintain sodium balance in the absence of active transport. However, sodium influx did not show saturation kinetics over an external concentration range of 91 to 1725 M. Unfed beetles failed to arrest net sodium loss to baths that were initially distilled water or ASW, even when bath sodium concentrations reached 75–298 M. The long-term rate of net sodium loss ranged from 0.61 to 4.4 moles/100 gwm·h for four sets of animals. Beetles decreased sodium efflux during a period of fasting. During subsequent feeding, beetles fed a high sodium diet (HSD) increased sodium efflux while beetles fed a low sodium diet (LSD) maintained low rates of sodium efflux. HSD fed beetles increased body sodium and hemolymph sodium concentration, and expanded extracellular fluid, relative to LSD fed beetles. Thus beetles cannot achieve sodium balance in fresh water without dietary sodium input, although they are able to regulate sodium loss.Abbreviations gwm grams wet mass - ASW artificial soft water - DW distilled water - HSD high sodium diet - LSD low sodium diet - ECF extracellular fluid volume  相似文献

To gain information on extended flight energetics, quasi-natural flight conditions imitating steady horizontal flight were set by combining the tetheredflight wind-tunnel method with the exhaustion-flight method. The bees were suspended from a two-component aerodynamic balance at different, near optimum body angle of attack and were allowed to choose their own speed: their body mass and body weight was determined before and after a flight; their speed, lift, wingbeat frequency and total flight time were measured throughout a flight. These values were used to determine thrust, resultant aerodynamic force (magnitude and tilting angle), Reynolds number, total flight distance and total flight impulse. Flights in which lift was body weight were mostly obtained. Bees, flown to complete exhausion, were refed with 5, 10, 15 or 20 l of a 1.28-mol·l-1 glucose solution (energy content w=18.5, 37.0, 55.5 or 74.0 J) and again flown to complete exhaustion at an ambient temperature of 25±1.5°C by a flight of known duration such that the calculation of absolute and relative metabolic power was possible. Mean body mass after exhaustion was 76.49±3.52 mg. During long term flights of 7.47–31.30 min similar changes in flight velocity, lift, thrust, aerodynamic force, wingbeat frequency and tilting angle took place, independent of the volume of feeding solution. After increasing rapidly within 15 s a more or less steady phase of 60–80% of total flight time, showing only a slight decrease, was followed by a steeper, more irregular decrease, finally reaching 0 within 20–30 s. In steady phases lift was nearly equal to resultant aerodynamic force; tilting angle was 79.8±4.0°, thrust to lift radio did not vary, thrust was 18.0±7.4% of lift, lift was somewhat higher/equal/lower than body mass in 61.3%, 16.1%, 22.6% of all totally analysable flights (n=31). The following parameters were varied as functions of volume of feeding solution (5–20 l in steps of 5 l) and energy content. (18.5–74.0 J in steps of 18.5 J): total flight time, velocity, total flight distance, mean lift, thrust, mean resultant aerodynamic force, tilting angle, total flight impulse, wingbeat frequency, metabolic power and metabolic power related to body mass, the latter related to empty, full and mean (=100 mg) body mass. A rapid procedure is described for the separation of CMP-sialic acid:lactosylceramide sialyltransferase reaction components using Sep Pak C18 cartridges. The quantitative separation of the more polar nucleotide sugar, CMP-sialic acid, and its free acid from the less polar GM3-ganglioside is simple and rapid relative to previously described methods. Recovery of GM3 is optimized by the addition of phosphatidylcholine to the reaction mixture prior to the chromatographic step. Using rat liver Golgi membranes as a source of CMP-sialic acid: lactosylceramide sialyltransferase activity (GM3 synthase; ST-1), the transfer of [14C] sialic acid from CMP-[14C] sialic acid to lactosylceramide can be quantified by this assay. The development of chlorosomes and their pigmentation were studied by growing Chloroflexus aurantiacus strain Ok-7o-fl first under conditions under which BChl c-synthesis is low (50°C, 2000 lux and 30°C, 1500 lux) and subsequently under conditions promoting high BChl c-synthesis (50°C, 400 lux). Electron microscopic observations on and chemical analyses of isolated cell components showed that in BChl c-depleted cells chlorosome-like structures (chlorosome bags) are attached to fragments of cytoplasmic membranes. These chlorosome bags exhibit a periodic fine structure caused by the construction of the baseplates of the chlorosomes. The baseplates are closely attached to the cytoplasmic membrane, they are rich in phospholipids and apparently contain a 790 nm-BChl a-complex. Chlorosome bags of BChl c-depleted cells always contain a limited amount of light-harvesting pigment complexes (BChlc, - and -carotene). The light-harvesting system is restored (50°C, 400 lux) by first refilling the existing chlorosome bags before cell division takes place.Abbreviations BChl Bacteriochlorophyll - LH Light-harvesting complex - RC Reaction center  相似文献

An inulin fructotransferase producing difructose dianhydride I (EC 2.4.1.200) was purified from Arthrobacter ureafaciens A51-1. It had maximum activity at pH 5.5 and 45 °C, and was stable up to 80 °C. This is the highest thermal stability for this enzyme reported to date. The molecular mass was estimated to be 38000 by SDS-PAGE, and 61000 by gel filtration. It was therefore estimated to be a dimer.  相似文献

-Glucan synthetase activity has been demonstrated in a Golgi vesicle fraction isolated from pollen tubes ofPetunia hybrida. This-glucan synthetase activity differs from that of most other higher plants in its inability to incorporate [14C]glucose from GDP-[14C]glucose. UDP-[14C]glucose, however, is an appropriate glucose donor for this enzyme. The optimum conditions for this-glucan synthetase activity are: 1 mg Golgi vesicle protein/ml reaction mixture; pH=±8 and a temperature of 25°C. The newly synthesized alkali-insoluble glucan contains-1,3- as well as -1,4-glucosidic linkages.  相似文献

The solvent effects of cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) on the reaction rates and enzyme enantioselectivity in the enantioselective transesterifications of racemic 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol (racemic sulcatol: SUL) and racemic 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol (racemic solketal: SOL) with a series of enol esters catalyzed by Pseudomonas cepacia lipase co-lyophilized with cyclodextrins (-, -, -, partially methylated -,and 2,3,6-tri-O-methyl--cyclodextrin: CyD; CyD; CyD; Me1.78 CyD; Me3CyD) were investigated and compared with those in diisopropyl ether (IPE). In the case of SUL, enzyme activities of the co-lyophilizate with Me1.78 CyD in CPME were lower than those in IPE with every acyl source, however, the absolute enantiopreference was shown in the transesterification with vinyl butyrate (VBR) in IPME. When the substrates were SOL and VBR, the enzyme activities in CPME were greatly enhanced as high as 1.6–9.8-fold, while the enantioselectivities in CPME were comparable to those in IPE.Revisions requested 16 December 2004; Revisions received 17 January 2005  相似文献
