Phototrophic biofilms are multispecies, self-sustaining and largely closed microbial ecosystems. They form macroscopic structures such as microbial mats and stromatolites. These sunlight-driven consortia consist of a number of functional groups of microorganisms that recycle the elements internally. Particularly, the sulfur cycle is discussed in more detail as this is fundamental to marine benthic microbial communities and because recently exciting new insights have been obtained. The cycling of elements demands a tight tuning of the various metabolic processes and require cooperation between the different groups of microorganisms. This is likely achieved through cell-to-cell communication and a biological clock. Biofilms may be considered as a macroscopic biological entity with its own physiology. We review the various components of some marine phototrophic biofilms and discuss their roles in the system. The importance of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as the matrix for biofilm metabolism and as substrate for biofilm microorganisms is discussed. We particularly assess the importance of extracellular DNA, horizontal gene transfer and viruses for the generation of genetic diversity and innovation, and for rendering resilience to external forcing to these biological entities.  相似文献

Summary Monhystera denticulata Timm, a free-living nematode present in the aufwuchs assemblages of several marine macrophytes located in North Sea Harbor, Southampton, New York, was isolated from Zostera marina and established in laboratory culture in order to study the influences of temperature and salinity on its life history. Under experimental conditions, M. denticulata has a generation time (Measured as the time elapsing between the first egg depositions of consecutive generations) of 10–12 days at 25° C and 26 S, which represent optimal growth conditions in the laboratory. The organism has a generation time of 20 days at 25° C and 13, 17 days at 25° C and 39, 18 days at 15° C and 26, 36 days at 15° C and 13 and 34 days at 15° C and 39. As conditions vary from the optimum of 25° C and 26 S, a decrease in temperature of 10° C and an increase or decrease in salinity of 13 results in a doubling of the generation time. At 5° C the generation time is about 180–197 days.Assuming optimum conditions and average generation time, about 15 generations of M. denticulata could occur in North Sea Harbor during the year. Nanocopia minuta was collected from an inland marine cave on Bermuda. This new genus is reminiscent of Platycopia in its cephalic appendages and in the 5th legs of the male. The 1st leg has a 3-segmented exopod and a 1-segmented endopod. The other legs show reductions with no armature along the inner margin of the exopods and with 2-segmented endopods in the female. Only 2nd and 3rd legs bear two outer spines on the first exopodal segment.Owing to similarities in sexual characters, mouthparts, and modifications of the swimming legs, Nanocopia and Platycopia are considered more closely related to each other than either is to Antrisocopia.Platycopioida now contains three genera of which two are found only in Roadside Cave. The order has retained several primitive characters and seems to have separated early from the gymnoplean stem.  相似文献

A natural population of phytoplankton and two species of zooplankton, Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) (stage V) and Sagitta elegans (Verrill) (mature), were analysed for their biochemical and mineral composition. Comparison with published data for the same categories of plankton shows that the distribution of both organic and mineral fractions is highly variable, the causes of which are not equally understood. The composition of the organic fraction is affected by the duality of function of the biochemical constituents and by the large number of ecological factors which influence their concentration. Whether this applies to the mineral fraction remains uncertain; nevertheless it appears that plankton concentrate trace metals, that phytoplankton has a greater ability to concentrate them than zooplankton, and that the ability of zooplankton to concentrate various metals varies with the species.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tissue desiccation is considered to be involved in anther opening, and it is agreed that environmental humidity affects its timing. Different sources of evidence suggest that the later steps of the process (i.e. stomium opening and outward wall bending) are regulated in different ways. Anther opening was studied in Allium triquetrum under four regimes of relative humidity (RH) to analyse the effect of this parameter and to speculate about its possible regulation. METHODS: Anther histology was studied in cross-sections under a microscope. The times of visible anther opening and complete outward wall bending were recorded separately for each level of RH. Frequency distributions were plotted to express anther behaviour. KEY RESULTS: When a longitudinal stomium breaks the anther remains closed due to adherence of walls on each side of the stomium. Anther opening occurs when the adhering walls subsequently separate. Later, the walls shrink laterally and bend outward. The anthers of the inner whorl opened during the morning of the first day of anthesis, while those of the outer whorl opened during the afternoon. Low RH (20 %) did not cause any evident acceleration of anther opening, but it did cause delay and inhibition of the opening of some anthers in the outer whorl. High RH (55 and 98 %) caused different degrees of delay and also inhibition of anther opening, but most anthers opened within the expected range of time. The time taken for outward wall bending was shortened at 20 % RH. Anther wall outward bending was inhibited at 55 % and 98 % RH. CONCLUSIONS: Anther opening occurred at a specific moment of anther development, separated in time from stomium breakage, and seemed related to dehydration caused by reabsorption of water by contiguous tissues. Outward bending of the wall was facilitated by evaporation. Anther opening and anther wall outward bending seemed to be regulated differently in relation to water control.  相似文献

Summary Twenty species of Fungi imperfecti, including strains from freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats in the environs of the middle and lower Neretve River, Yugoslavia, were collected, purified and identified. Strains of nine species from fresh, brackish, and sea water were grown on various NaCl concentrations. These fungi exhibited a wide amplitude of salt tolerance. In general, the strains from fresh water grew best at or were able to tolerate the lower NaCl concentrations. The sea-water strains grew best at and could tolerate the higher NaCl concentrations. Brackish-water strains were found to be more like strains isolated from fresh water than from sea water. Brackish-water strains were able to grow well in zero or low concentrations of NaCl, but they could not do as well at the higher NaCl concentrations. The results of the laboratory experiments with NaCl concentrations support the findings in nature.All twenty species of these fungi were tested for their ability to decompose lignin, utilize phosphate and degrade lecithin. Five species gave a positive reaction on gallic acid medium; five species were able to utilize lecithin; and seven species were active in utilizing tribasic calcium phosphate.  相似文献

Exsheathment of infective juveniles of Haemonchus contortus in bicarbonate-carbon dioxide buffer (gas phase, 40 per cent carbon dioxide in nitrogen) was inhibited by exposing the juveniles to 5 × 10−4 N iodine for 10 min at 25°C. This inhibition was decreased if the iodine-treated juveniles were exposed to hydrogen sulphide-water before they were stimulated to exsheath. The effect of iodine was also decreased when 0·01 M sodium dithionite was included in the stimulating medium.
  • 2.Solutions of iodine and hydrogen sulphide had similar effects on infective juveniles of Trichostrongylus colubriformis which were stimulated to esheath in 0·01 N hydrochloric acid under a gas phase of 40 per cent carbon dioxide in nitrogen. With this species, however, the effect of hydrogen sulphide was often greater, and the inhibition caused by iodine could be completely reversed.
  • 3.It is argued that these results support the hypothesis that, in order for infection to occur with juveniles which enter the host per os, the host must supply a stimulus which initiates the development of parasitic stages. Carbon dioxide seems to be the chief component of the stimulus provided by the host. It is postulated that the carbon dioxide reacts with receptors in infective juveniles. The results given in this paper support the hypothesis that suitably placed sulphydryl groups may be involved in the interacion of carbon dioxide with the receptor.

Angiosperms first appeared during the Early Cretaceous, and within 30 million years they reigned over many floras worldwide. Associated with this rise to prominence, angiosperms produced a spectrum of reproductive and vegetative innovations, which produced a cascade of ecological consequences that altered the ecology and biogeochemistry of the planet. The pace, pattern and phylogenetic systematics of the Cretaceous angiosperm diversification are broadly sketched out. However, the ecophysiology and environmental interactions that energized the early angiosperm radiation remain unresolved. This constrains our ability to diagnose the selective pressures and habitat contexts responsible for the evolution of fundamental angiosperm features, such as flowers, rapid growth, xylem vessels and net-veined leaves, which in association with environmental opportunities, drove waves of phylogenetic and ecological diversification. Here, we consider our current understanding of early angiosperm ecophysiology. We focus on comparative patterns of ecophysiological evolution, emphasizing carbon- and water-use traits, by merging recent molecular phylogenetic studies with physiological studies focused on extant basal angiosperms. In doing so, we discuss how early angiosperms established a roothold in pre-existing Mesozoic plant communities, and how these events canalized subsequent bursts of angiosperm diversification during the Aptian-Albian.  相似文献

Five species of philometrid nematodes (subfamily Philometrinae) are redescribed on the basis of newly collected materials from marine fishes from Japan. The species Philometra sciaenae Yamaguti, 1941, considered by Rasheed (1963) a synonym of P. lateolabracis (Yamaguti, 1935), is re-established as a valid species and the male of this nematode, collected from the ovary of the type-host, Argyrosomus argentatus, is described for the first time; the latter is characterised mainly by the length of equally long spicules (0.108–0.126 mm) and the length ratio of the gubernaculum and spicules (1:2.25). Other species redescribed on females include Philometra inimici Yamaguti, 1941 and P. sebastisci Yamaguti, 1941 from the ovary of their type-hosts, Inimicus japonicus and Sebastiscus marmoratus, respectively, and also Philometroides seriolae (Ishii, 1931) from the musculature of Seriola quinqueradiata (type-host), and Clavinema mariae (Layman, 1930) from the subcutaneous tissue of Pleuronectes schrenki and Acanthogobius flavimanus (a new host record). For the first time, cephalic ends of some of these species were studied under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the character of their cephalic papillae was described. The importance of a knowledge of male morphology for the taxonomy of philometrids is stressed.  相似文献

Five species of Mononchida and Mononchulus nodicaudatus (v. Daday, 1899) Cobb, 1918 are reported from freshwater sediments at or near Boba Island, Okavango Swamps, Botswana. Illustrations are given for Mylonchulus lacustris (Cobb N.A. in Cobb MX, 1915) Andrássy, 1958, Iotonchus risoceiae (Carvalho, 1955) Andrássy, 1958 and Cobbonchus spec. Two species of Mononchus Bastian, 1865, M. aquaticus Coetzee, 1968 and M. truncatus Bastian, 1865 were also found. The usually rare species M. nodicaudatus was well represented and its juvenile stages are described for the first time.  相似文献

Alcoholic extracts of 50 botanically identified species of marine flora have been screened for a wide range of biological activities. Of these, 2 extracts exhibited anti-amoebic and antiviral activity each, 3 of them had anti-implantation activity; 9 had hypoglycaemic activity while hypotensive activity was associated with 11 extracts; 14 extracts were found to be diuretic and 1 of them had anti-inflammatory activity. Further, 10 of these extracts exhibited 2 types of activities while a combination of 3 and 4 types of activities was observed in one extract each. Follow-up studies have been carried out in some plants with confirmed activity. The active principles and results of these studies are reported.  相似文献
