Abstract. Queen-laid eggs of Melipona bees stand upright on their larval food, in part because the upper part of the egg is covered with a water-repellent layer of fatty acids and C21 to C29 hydrocarbons. The lower, wettable portion does not have these materials. Trophic eggs laid by workers are essentially devoid of this coating and tend to sink in the food, when not detected and consumed by the queen. Reproductive workers' eggs, which have about 50% of the water-repellent coating in comparison with the queen's eggs, are usually laid in the cell after oviposition by the queen, and therefore there are two eggs in the cell. Surface tension forces cause the two eggs to float towards each other so they become attached. When alone inside the cell, the reproductive worker egg often floats at an angle to the surface, reflecting the instability of this kind of egg. Attachment to a queen's egg therefore compensates this instability and enhances the reproductive worker egg's chances to develop. Such reproductive worker eggs have about 50% of the water-repellent coating in comparison with the queen's eggs. The surface of an 'undetermined' egg laid by a worker was much closer in composition to that of a queen's egg, from which it is deduced that this was the rarer type of reproductive worker egg, namely those that are laid before queen oviposition has taken place. The layer of hydrophobic material on a queen's egg is about one molecule thick, and probably orientated with the carboxyl groups toward the chorion of the egg and the hydrocarbon chains perpendicular to the surface.  相似文献

Larvae of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) can develop a form of Bt tolerance after exposure to sub‐lethal doses of Bt‐toxin subclass Cry1Ac. Increasing levels of tolerance are produced over generations of larval exposure, which are not related to DNA sequence changes, and are largely maternally transmitted. The characteristic of maternal transmission, combined with the importance of egg parasitoids to cotton pest management, raises questions about the effects of Bt tolerance/exposure on the eggs of H. armigera and on some key metrics of egg parasitism. In the present study, the effect of inducible tolerance on eggs of H. armigera and parasitism by Trichogramma pretiosum (Riley) is investigated. First, the volumes of eggs laid by susceptible and tolerant H. armigera females are compared. In addition, the effect of inducible tolerance on egg parasitism is determined by comparing parasitism success, the number of adult wasps emerged per host egg, and the proportion of male and female offspring emerged per host egg. The results obtained suggest that Cry1Ac‐tolerance is associated with increased egg volume, even after just one generation of sub‐lethal exposure. When tolerant H. armigera are freed from ongoing sub‐lethal exposure, a corresponding decrease in egg volume is not detected. Although there is no difference in the percentage of eggs parasitized, there is an increase in the number of emergent parasitoids, especially males, from eggs laid by tolerant H. armigera. These results confirm that maternally‐transmitted Bt tolerance is reflected in the phenotype of the eggs of tolerant offspring, which affects egg parasitism.  相似文献

Breeding in the high Arctic is time constrained and animals should therefore start with their annual reproduction as early as possible. To allow for such early reproduction in migratory birds, females arrive at the breeding grounds either with body stores or they try to rapidly develop their eggs after arrival using local resources. Svalbard breeding barnacle geese Branta leucopsis have to fly non‐stop for about 1100 km from their last continental staging site to the archipelago making the transport of body stores costly. However, environmental conditions at the breeding grounds are highly unpredictable favouring residual body stores allowing for egg production after arrival on the breeding grounds. We estimated the reliance on southern continental resources, i.e. body stores for egg formation, in barnacle geese using stable isotope ratios in the geese's forage along the flyway and in their eggs. Females adopted mixed breeding strategies by using southern resources as well as local resources to varying extents for egg formation. Southern capital in lipid‐free yolk averaged 41% (range: 23–65%), early laid eggs containing more southern capital than eggs laid late in the season. Yolk lipids and albumen did not vary over time and averaged a southern capital proportion of 54% (range: 32–73%) and 47% (range: 25–88%), respectively. Our findings indicate that female geese vary the use of southern resources when synthesising their eggs and this allocation also varies among egg tissues. Their mixed and flexible use of distant and local resources potentially allows for adaptive adjustments to environmental conditions encountered at the archipelago just before breeding.  相似文献

Plants can defend themselves against herbivorous insects before the larvae hatch from eggs and start feeding. One of these preventive defence strategies is to produce plant volatiles, in response to egg deposition, which attract egg parasitoids that subsequently kill the herbivore eggs. Here, we studied whether egg deposition by Pieris brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) induces Brussels sprouts plants to produce cues that attract or arrest Trichogramma brassicae Bezdeko (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Olfactometer bioassays revealed that odours from plants with eggs did not attract or arrest parasitoids. However, contact bioassays showed that T. brassicae females were arrested on egg‐free leaf squares excised from leaves with 72 h‐old egg masses, which are highly suitable for parasitisation. We tested the hypothesis that this arresting activity is due to scales and chemicals deposited by the butterflies during oviposition and which are thus present on the leaf surface in the vicinity of the eggs. Indeed, leaf squares excised from egg‐free leaves, but contaminated with butterfly deposits, arrested the wasps when the squares were tested 1 day after contamination. However, squares from egg‐free leaves with 72 h‐old butterfly deposits had no arresting activity. Thus, we exclude that the arresting activity of the leaf area near 72 h‐old egg masses was elicited by cues from scales and other butterfly deposits. We suggest that egg deposition of P. brassicae induces a change in the leaf surface chemicals in leaves with egg masses. A systemic induction extending to an egg‐free leaf neighbouring an egg‐carrying leaf could not be detected. Our data suggest that a local, oviposition‐induced change of leaf surface chemicals arrests T. brassicae in the vicinity of host eggs.  相似文献

Conflicts over reproductive division of labour are common in social insects. These conflicts are often resolved via antagonistic actions that are mediated by chemical cues. Dominant egg layers and their eggs can be recognized by a specific yet similar cuticular hydrocarbon profile. In the facultatively queenless ant Gnamptogenys striatula, a worker's cuticular hydrocarbon profile signals its fertility and this determines its position in the reproductive division of labour. How eggs acquire the same hydrocarbon profile is as yet unclear. Here, we search for glandular sources of egg hydrocarbons and identify the putative mechanism of egg marking. We found that eggs carry the same hydrocarbons as the cuticle of fertile workers, and that these hydrocarbons also occur in the ovaries and the haemolymph. None of the studied glands (Dufour, venom, labial and mandibular gland) contained these hydrocarbons. Our results indicate that hydrocarbons are deposited on eggs while still in the ovaries. The low hydrocarbon concentration in the ovaries, however, suggests they are produced elsewhere and transported through the haemolymph. We also found that fertile workers regularly deposit new hydrocarbons on eggs by rubbing laid eggs with a hairy structure on the abdominal tip from which a non-polar substance is secreted.  相似文献

Incubated clutches of the Mandarin Duck were larger earlier in the breeding season. At all nests there were days on which a single egg, and days on which no egg was added to a clutch; days on which more than one egg was added to a clutch were less frequent. Larger clutches had proportionately more days on which two or more eggs were added; the proportion of days on which no eggs were added was unrelated to clutch size. Larger clutches had a relatively shorter laying period than expected, but a longer incubation period than smaller clutches. Unhatched eggs resulted mainly from embryonic mortality, which was concentrated in the period just prior to pipping. Similar proportions of unhatched eggs resulted from eggs laid into clutches before and after the start of incubation. Larger clutches did not have proportionately more unhatched eggs. As all clutches had at least one day on which no eggs were laid, it is proposed that the proportion of nests parasitized was greater than that estimated from nests with more than one egg laid on any one day.  相似文献

As female birds are able to lay no more than a single egg each day, in those species producing larger clutches the first laid eggs may get a developmental head‐start over later eggs in the clutch. All other things being equal, the differential pattern of development across the clutch may contribute to hatching asynchrony and subsequent inequity in the competition between brood mates, and ultimately increase variance in the quality and fitness of first‐ and last‐laid offspring. It has been suggested that females might allocate resources differently across the laying sequence to moderate the developmental rate and hatching time of different embryos. We tested this theory in the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata, a common model species for investigating maternal effects in birds. We removed 758 eggs from 160 nests shortly after they were laid and used artificial incubators to control for parental effects and monitor hatching times. Eggs from larger clutches consistently hatched sooner than those from average‐sized clutches, demonstrating that the intrinsic properties of an egg can alter the developmental time of embryos. There were also differences in the development time of eggs across the laying sequence, but these patterns were weaker, inconsistent and unrelated to sequential investment across the laying sequence in a straightforward way. This study indicates that maternal resource allocation to eggs across the laying sequence and across clutch sizes can influence development times and play a potentially important role in determining the competitive dynamics of broods.  相似文献

Brood reduction in birds is frequently induced by hatching asynchrony. Crested penguins (genus Eudyptes) are obligate brood reducers, but in contrast to most other birds, first‐laid eggs are considerably smaller in size than second‐laid eggs; furthermore, first‐laid eggs hatch after their siblings. The mechanisms underlying this reversal in size and hatching order remain unclear. In this study, we tested whether the second‐laid eggs of Snares Penguins Eudyptes robustus have a higher eggshell porosity allowing them to maintain a higher metabolic rate throughout incubation and to hatch before their first‐laid siblings. We investigated differences in egg size, shell thickness, pore density, pore diameter and water vapour conductance between first and second eggs within clutches and examined the influence of these shell characteristics on hatching asynchrony. First‐laid eggs of Snares Penguins were approximately 78% of the size of the larger second eggs. Second‐laid eggs had considerably thicker shells and more pores per cm2 than first eggs, whereas pore diameter did not differ between eggs. Water vapour conductance was greater in second‐ (16.8 mg/day/torr) than in first‐laid eggs (14.9 mg/day/torr). The difference in water vapour conductance between first‐ and second‐laid eggs within clutches was related to hatching patterns. In nests where second eggs hatched before first‐laid eggs, second eggs had a considerably greater water conductance than their sibling, whereas in nests where both eggs hatched on the same day, the difference in water conductance between eggs was very small, and in a few nests where small first eggs hatched before their larger sibling, they had a greater water conductance than their larger second‐laid nestmate. Surprisingly few studies have investigated differences in shell characteristics between eggs within clutches and associated effects on hatching asynchrony. This study has demonstrated that such differences exist between eggs within clutches and that they can influence hatching patterns.  相似文献

1. Whether the potential fecundity of herbivorous insects is realised or not may depend on female behaviour, which in turn may be influenced by host plant acceptability. Female Bupalus piniarius were observed to discriminate against needles growing out the year following defoliation (current‐year needles) of its host plant Pinus sylvestris. 2. It was hypothesised that the discriminatory behaviour was due to current‐year needles being less secure as a substrate. Field and laboratory experiments were designed to test this hypothesis and to estimate the discrepancy between potential and realised fecundity when females were offered defoliated branches. 3. In a laboratory oviposition experiment, B. piniarius females were exposed to branches bearing either current‐year needles only or both mature and current‐year needles. Daily oviposition rate, egg batch size, longevity, and mature eggs and fat retained at death were recorded for each female. In field experiments, the rate at which eggs dropped from expanding needles and the capacity of neonate larvae hatching from the dropped eggs to colonise a tree were assessed. 4. Significantly fewer eggs were laid when females were exposed to defoliated branches. 5. Twenty‐six and 16% of the eggs laid on current‐year needles dropped from the needles in 1998 and 1999 respectively, whereas no eggs dropped from mature needles in 1998 and only one egg (< 1%) dropped in 1999. 6. A very small proportion of larvae hatching on the forest floor (simulated egg drop) was able to recolonise host trees. 7. These results emphasise the importance of oviposition behaviour on realised fecundity when analysing insect population dynamics. In the case of B. piniarius, egg placement, although a minor detail during the normal course of events, became of key importance when defoliation deprived females of their preferred egg attachment site.  相似文献

Is reproduction by adult female insects limited by the finite time available to locate hosts (time limitation) or by the finite supply of eggs (egg limitation)? An influential model predicted that stochasticity in reproductive opportunity favors elevated fecundity, rendering egg limitation sufficiently rare that its importance would be greatly diminished. Here, I use models to explore how stochasticity shapes fecundity, the likelihood of egg limitation, and the ecological importance of egg limitation. The models make three predictions. First, whereas spatially stochastic environments favor increased fecundity, temporally stochastic environments favor increases, decreases, or intermediate maxima in fecundity, depending on egg costs. Second, even when spatially or temporally stochastic environments favor life histories with less‐frequent egg limitation, stochasticity still increases the proportion of all eggs laid in the population that is laid by females destined to become egg limited. This counterintuitive result is explained by noting that stochasticity concentrates reproduction in the hands of a few females that are likely to become egg limited. Third, spatially or temporally stochastic environments amplify the constraints imposed by time and eggs on total reproduction by the population. I conclude that both egg and time constraints are fundamental in shaping insect reproductive behavior and population dynamics in stochastic environments.  相似文献

In this field study, newly laid egg clutches of Succinea thaanumi, an endemic Hawaiian land snail, were labeled and observed weekly over a 12‐mo period. Snails usually laid their clutches under leaf tips and, moreover, this placement affected snail emergence by mitigating the effects of dehydration through the leaf‐drip phenomenon. During droughts, the gel surrounding egg clutches dehydrated, pasting the embryos to the backs of leaves. The hygroscopic gel rehydrated once rains resumed. The majority of newly laid clutches contained shell‐less embryos which required more time for emergence than embryos laid with visible shells. More shelled embryos were laid subsequent to a 3‐wk drought, indicating that snails retained their eggs during adverse environmental conditions and laid them when conditions improved. The snails’ abilities to retain eggs in adverse conditions, but to lay more unshelled embryos over their lifetimes, contributed to their overall reproductive success.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Many cicadellid females in the tribe Proconiini (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) cover their egg masses with specialised, usually rod‐shaped, brochosomes as the eggs are being laid. The brochosomes are produced in Golgi complexes in the Malpighian tubules of Cicadellidae. In contrast to the gravid females, adult males, pre‐reproductive adult females, and nymphal males and females produce specialised, usually spherically shaped brochosomes. Brochosomes are also used to cover the external surfaces of nymphs and newly moulted adult males and females. 2. The function of the brochosome covering the egg masses is unknown but various hypotheses have been suggested, including protecting the eggs against pathogens, predators, and parasitoids. Based on preliminary observations of Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) parasitising the eggs of the cicadellid, Homalodisca coagulata (Say), it is speculated here that brochosomes covering an egg mass hinder parasitisation of eggs by G. ashmeadi. This hypothesis was tested by observing G. ashmeadi females foraging on leaves with H. coagulata egg masses heavily covered with rod‐shaped brochosomes vs. those lacking brochosomes. 3. Cox's proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the probability, per unit time, that a female G. ashmeadi displayed the sequence of behaviours that ended in successful oviposition as influenced by five variables: (a) presence or absence of brochosomes on an egg mass, (b) the leaf surface, upper or lower, being searched by the parasitoid (the egg masses are laid in the parenchyma on the lower leaf surface), (c) the parasitoid's previous ovipositional experience, (d) egg mass size, and (e) the parasitoid's age. 4. Brochosomes significantly decreased oviposition efficacy of G. ashmeadi females. Scanning electron microscopy showed that females exposed to brochosome‐covered egg masses had brochosomes adhering to their tarsi, legs, antennae, and eyes, all of which prompted extensive bouts of grooming.  相似文献

The relative age of an individual's siblings is a major cause of fitness variation in many species. In Blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), we show that age hierarchies are predominantly caused by incubation preclutch completion, such that last laid eggs hatch later than early laid eggs. However, after statistically controlling for incubation behavior late laid eggs are shown to hatch more quickly than early laid eggs reducing the amount of asynchrony. By experimentally switching early and late laid eggs between nests on the day they were laid, we controlled for the effect of differential incubation and found that the faster hatching times of late laid eggs remains. Chicks that hatched earlier were heavier and had higher probability of fledgling, and chicks that hatched from experimental eggs had patterns of growth and survival consistent with this. Egg mass explained a small part of this variation, but the remainder must be due to egg composition. These results are consistent with the idea that intrinsic differences between eggs across the laying sequence serve to mitigate the effects of age‐related hierarchies. We also show that between‐clutch variation in prenatal developmental rate exists and that it is mainly environmental in origin rather than genetic.  相似文献

Boat-tailed Grackle Quiscalus major eggs averaged 8.09 g wet weight. Mean egg weight represented 8 05 % of female body weight. Based on egg weight, Grackle eggs have a shorter incubation period than the general passerine pattern.
Egg weight varied significantly with sequence of laying and between clutches in both two-egg and three-egg clutches. Last laid eggs weighed less than first laid eggs. The mean weight of the first two eggs laid in three-egg clutches did not differ from the mean egg weight of two-egg clutches. The average clutch of two and three eggs weighed 16.33 g and 24.16 g, respectively.
Mean egg weight varied between study colonies and with season. Grackles at East Lake laid eggs that weighed less than grackles at either Alligator Lake or North Lake. Eggs laid during March averaged less than eggs laid later in the season. The locality variation reflects the different timing of nesting between sites rather than food abundance. As nutrient provisioning increases with an increase in egg weight, the seasonal change in egg weight probably reflects improved feeding conditions for the female. This suggests that selection favours beginning laying before reserves of the female are sufficient to lay the largest egg possible.
The size of the young at hatching was correlated with egg size. Newly hate had young averaged 79.6% of fresh egg weight. Egg weight did not determine the probability of hatching or starvation of the young. Females do not appear to adjust egg size facultatively depending on the sex of the young. Eggs producing males and females did not vary significantly in weight, whether comparisons were made within or between clutches.  相似文献

Evolutionary hypotheses regarding the function of eggshell phenotypes, from solar protection through mimicry, have implicitly assumed that eggshell appearance remains static throughout the laying and incubation periods. However, recent research demonstrates that egg coloration changes over relatively short, biologically relevant timescales. Here, we provide the first evidence that such changes impact brood parasite–host eggshell color mimicry during the incubation stage. First, we use long‐term data to establish how rapidly the Acrocephalus arundinaceus Linnaeus (great reed warbler) responded to natural parasitic eggs laid by the Cuculus canorus Linnaeus (common cuckoo). Most hosts rejected parasitic eggs just prior to clutch completion, but the host response period extended well into incubation (~10 days after clutch completion). Using reflectance spectrometry and visual modeling, we demonstrate that eggshell coloration in the great reed warbler and its brood parasite, the common cuckoo, changes rapidly, and the extent of eggshell color mimicry shifts dynamically over the host response period. Specifically, 4 days after being laid, the host should notice achromatic color changes to both cuckoo and warbler eggs, while chromatic color changes would be noticeable after 8 days. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the perceived match between host and cuckoo eggshell color worsened over the incubation period. These findings have important implications for parasite–host coevolution dynamics, because host egg discrimination may be aided by disparate temporal color changes in host and parasite eggs.  相似文献

Individual eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) females produce clutches of eggs with unique coloration and older females and females in better body condition lay more pigmented blue‐green eggs. Conspecific brood parasitism in this species is not uncommon and bluebirds occasionally reject what appear to be normal eggs by moving them to the periphery of the nest. I used UV‐visual reflectance spectrometry to objectively measure coloration of eggs and nest material. To estimate the conspicuousness of the trait, I calculated the contrast between eggs and background nest material. I found high achromatic and chromatic contrast between the coloration of eggs and of the nests, suggesting that bluebird eggs are highly conspicuous. To test the hypothesis that expression of blue‐green coloration eggs facilitates recognition of eggs laid by conspecific brood parasites, I cross‐fostered individual eggs into host nests during egg laying and monitored the fate of those eggs. I found no support, however, for the hypothesis that egg coloration facilitates discrimination of parasitic eggs from host eggs.  相似文献

Life history theory predicts that larger propagules should be produced when the offspring are expected to experience intense competition. This study tested whether female cowpea weevils responded to high larval or adult density by producing larger eggs. In a splitbrood design I measured the effect of density experienced by females at their larval stage (1 vs. 4–6 larvae/cowpea) on the size of eggs produced just after emergence. The females were then kept either at low adult density (1 female+1 male per vial), or at high adult density (10 females+10 males) for 2 days, and tested for the effect of this adult density treatment on the size of eggs laid subsequently. I measured egg length and width, as well as the diameter of the entrance tunnel made by the larva, which can be regarded as a crude measure of larval size. Females that experienced high adult density subsequently laid slightly wider eggs than those kept at low density. This difference, albeit small (about 1–4% after correction for female weight and the effect of family, depending on the statistical model used), was statistically significant and robust to alterations of the statistical model. It may be a remnant of a larger plastic response of egg size to competition that has become eroded during many generations in high-density laboratory cultures. There was no difference in egg length or the diameter of the entrance tunnel. Eggs laid just after emergence by females reared at high larval density also tended to be wider than those produced by females that had no competitors. This effect was only marginally significant, however, and sensitive to the statistical model. Both egg length and width and the diameter of the entrance tunnel increased with female weight and decreased with female age. The tunnel diameter was positively correlated with both egg length and width, but the effect of width was larger.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. The colour of eggs laid by individual Coenonympha pamphilus (L.) (Lep., Satyridae) females changed over their lifespan. The first laid eggs were green, but after having laid about 100 eggs, females laid only yellow eggs.
2. By following females in the field, or by capturing wild females, and noting the colour of their eggs, it was established that younger females showed higher oviposition rates and laid heavier eggs than older females.
3. Hence, wild C.pamphilus females are unable to sustain a constant egg production by extracting amino acids or any other nutrients from nectar. We hypothesize that this is a general phenomenon in nectar feeding butterflies.

In birds, the adaptive significance of hatching asynchrony has been under debate for many years and the parental effects on hatching asynchrony have been largely assumed but not often tested. Some authors suggest that hatching asynchrony depends on the incubation onset and many factors have been shown to influence hatching asynchrony in different species. Our objective was to analyze the exact timing of the onset of incubation and if this affects hatching asynchrony; and, in addition, which other factors (brood patch development, incubation position, adult body condition, intra‐clutch egg dimorphism, laying date and year) affect hatching asynchrony in Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus. We first estimated the eggshell temperature at which embryo development starts, with a non‐destructive and novel method. We then recorded individual egg temperatures in 61 nests during incubation, and related them, and other breeding parameters, to hatching asynchrony. We also observed incubation positions in 307 nests. We found a significant positive relationship between hatching asynchrony and the temperature that the first‐laid egg experienced during egg laying and between hatching asynchrony and the initial brood patch area. We also found a negative relationship between hatching asynchrony and the difference in temperature between second and first‐laid eggs within a clutch, measured after the egg‐laying period was finished. We ruled out position of the eggs during incubation, adult body condition, egg volume, laying date, and study year as factors influencing hatching asynchrony. The egg temperature during laying and the difference in temperature between eggs of a clutch are determinants of hatching asynchrony in Magellanic penguins.  相似文献

Worker policing (mutual repression of reproduction) in the eusocial Hymenoptera represents a leading example of how coercion can facilitate cooperation. The occurrence of worker policing in “primitively” eusocial species with low mating frequencies, which lack relatedness differences conducive to policing, suggests that separate factors may underlie the origin and maintenance of worker policing. We tested this hypothesis by investigating conflict over male parentage in the primitively eusocial, monandrous bumblebee, Bombus terrestris. Using observations, experiments, and microsatellite genotyping, we found that: (a) worker‐ but not queen‐laid male eggs are nearly all eaten (by queens, reproductive, and nonreproductive workers) soon after being laid, so accounting for low observed frequencies of larval and adult worker‐produced males; (b) queen‐ and worker‐laid male eggs have equal viabilities; (c) workers discriminate between queen‐ and worker‐laid eggs using cues on eggs and egg cells that almost certainly originate from queens. The cooccurrence in B. terrestris of these three key elements of “classical” worker policing as found in the highly eusocial, polyandrous honeybees provides novel support for the hypothesis that worker policing can originate in the absence of relatedness differences maintaining it.
