Summary Prominent secretory nerve endings are found at the posterior margin of the supraesophageal ganglion in the protandric polychaete, Ophryotrocha puerilis. Solitary juveniles developing as primary males, and then as females, accumulate neurosecretory material in the nerve endings which thereby swell and become filled with granules. Females maintained in mass culture have similar terminals, whereas in secondary males (males which had been females before), these axon terminals are very small and contain no material. When such males are isolated, they accumulate neurosecretory material within the nerve endings and become females. When formerly isolated females are put together, their stores of neurosecretory material are rapidly discharged. Subsequently they lay egg masses and switch to the male state. These effects are mediated by a pheromone released during social contact of formerly isolated females. The complexity of the relationship between neurosecretory activity and sexual state is indicated by the situation in animals maintained in pairs, when both male and female partners have swollen nerve endings packed with secretory material. 相似文献

Summary The nephridia of Ophryotrocha puerilis are segmental organs. The nephrostome opens at the posterior margin of a setigerous segment into the coelomic cavity of this segment. The nephridial canal is made up of about 15 cells. These cells form an S-shaped tubule which extends into the following segment. The lumen of the nephridial canal ranges from 2 to 7 m in diameter. The nephropore opens laterally on the ventral surface of the body wall.In cross sections, one, two, or three cells are seen forming the canal. The inner surfaces of the canal cells are of different appearances along the canal. Since no regular pattern of cell distribution was found along the canals of different nephridia it is assumed that changes in cell structure along the canal are due to functional states or properties rather than to anatomically fixed regional differences. The canal cells either show smooth contours or they form brush borders of microvilli or sponge-like inner surfaces with a system of vacuolar canals running through the cytoplasm. Most of the canal cells are filled with various kinds of vesicles. Usually two or three cells contain larger vesicles up to 2.5 m in diameter with more or less electron-dense contents. Some of these vesicles resemble lysosomes. There are at least three bundles of cilia in each canal. In young specimens the number of cilia in one bundle is smaller (10–15) than in adult specimens (60–70). The nephridia do not show sex specific differences. The female nephridia do not function as genital ducts. As judged from the sizes of sperm and nephridia it appears to be possible that sperm are shed via male nephridia. 相似文献

Crossing experiments were conducted between the Naples I (NI) strain of Ophryotrocha labronica labronica, three strains of O. l. pacifica from Japan (M3), Hawaii (WH) and Los Angeles (LA), two strains of O. labronica from Australia and one from an unknown origin, discovered in a Moscow aquarium, to determine the relationships between the European and Pacific subspecies, and the newly discovered strains. Previously published data combined with new results revealed several stages in the process of speciation within the sibling group. Interpopulation crosses yielded an increased sex ratio that appears to be positively related to genetic distance and to the sex ratio of the parent strains. Fecundity data demonstrated that the three northern Pacific strains are more closely related to each other than to any other strain, confirming that they are a valid subspecies, and indicate that they are the result of natural distribution. The strain of unknown origin as well as the Australian strains clearly belong to O. l. labronica. Its isolated presence in the South Pacific may be a remnant of an earlier wider distribution or an introduction of the Mediterranean population, as the life histories of Ophryotrocha species have made them prime candidates for anthropogenic dispersals. 相似文献

Scripta 1 (5): 207–210, 1972.–The mechanism of sex determination and the incipient reproductive isolation between geographic populations of Ophryotrocha labronica are studied in intra- and interpopulation crosses. Two populations from the Naples area and one from Leghorn are employed in the crosses. The considerable genetic difference between the Leghorn population and any of the Naples populations is reflected in some crossing combinations by changes in sex ratios, by occurrence of individuals with a reduced viability in the progeny, by a decreased mating propensity, and by discrimination of mates from alien populations. It is stated that the changes in sex ratios, the decreased mating propensity, the dwarfed individuals in the progeny, and the preferential mating all reflect the incompatibility of gene complexes. The differences between reciprocal crosses are not fully explained. The occurrence of extranuclear DNA, as well as the existence of a maternal heredity in intrapopulation crosses, indicate that cytoplasmic inheritance may be one of the factors behind these reciprocal differences. 相似文献

1. The relationships between life history, fitness and sexuality, together with their ecological and evolutionary significance, has been analysed comparing the main life-history traits and demography in three closely related species belonging to the genus Ophryotrocha. The species are: the gonochoristic O. labronica, the simultaneous hermaphrodite O. diadema and the protandrous hermaphrodite O. puerilis. 2. Survivorship and reproductive data were collected weekly and were used to construct life tables and population projection matrices for each species and compare life-history characteristics. Elasticity, life-table response and decomposition analyses were performed to examine the relative contribution of fecundity and survivorship to differences in lamda between species. 3. The gonochoristic and hermaphroditic species differ in all the main life-history parameters and also in demographic characteristics. In particular the value of lamda, used commonly to express fitness, is markedly higher in the gonochoristic species while in terms of fitness simultaneous and sequential hermaphroditism are very similar. In the genus Ophryotrocha gonochorism currently represents the most widespread condition, being characteristic of the majority of the known species in the genus. 4. Given the demographic advantage ensured by gonochorism, it remains be understood why some species have retained simultaneous hermaphroditism and one has evolved a sequential type hermaphroditism; the most probable hypothesis is correlated with the density of the species in natural habitats. 相似文献

The type locality of the new species is a muddy bottom at a depth of 25 meters in the Gullmarsfjord on the Swedish west coast. On that locality the fauna is recovering from previous sulphite pulp mill pollution. The shape and morphology of O. maculata conform with most other members of the species. It is distinguished by segmental transverse rows of dark spots. It is a contemporary hermaphrodite with anterior male and posterior female segments. Different from other known species the germ cells are released directly into the water. As a consequence the brood is not protected by the parents. 相似文献

Summary The nuchal organs of the protandric hermaphrodite Ophryotrocha puerilis were studied by electron microscopy. Ophryotrocha puerilis is the first species hitherto described which possesses four instead of two nuchal organs. These sensory structures are located as ciliary pits at the posterior margin of the prostomium. Histologically, the nuchal organs are composed of supporting cells with long motile cilia and bipolar sensory cells, the perikarya of which form four distinct nuchal ganglia adjoining the brain. These structural components are concentrically arranged around the central sensory area. This area is covered by a modified cuticle, whereas the cuticle above the peripheral region of the sense organ exhibits the appearance typical for polychaetes. Two types of vesicular material are produced in the basal supporting cells, a dense-cored one within the central supporting cells only and a clear irregular-shaped one in all of these cells. The first type is considered to be responsible for the formation of the modified cuticle. The significance of these most probably long-distance chemoreceptory organs and their possible role in reproductive behaviour is discussed. 相似文献

IL-6 is a pleiotropic pro-inflammatory cytokine thought to play a role in age physiology, even if its possible modulation by aging mechanisms has not been fully defined. In this paper, the morpho-functional modifications and IL-6 immunoreactivity during aging in a simple invertebrate model, Ophryotrocha labronica, are reported. The comparison between newly-hatched, juveniles, young adult and 3-month-old females showed significant differences in the nervous and genital systems. There is evidence of nerve cell loss and a decline in oocyte growth and maturation at the gonad level. Immunohistochemistry reveals a different distribution of IL-6-like molecules, and a decreased number of reactive nerve cells in the central nervous system of aged O. labronica associated to the induced morphological modifications. 相似文献

Abstract. The timing and spatial distribution of cells containing FMRFamide-related molecules in the embryogenesis of the polychaete Ophryotrocha labronica were studied immunocytochemically. FMRFamide-like molecules emerge early during embryonic development. They are found at the one-cell stage, are asymmetrically distributed in the first phases of cleavage, associated with gastrular movements, and label the central nervous system morphogenesis. Moreover, during embryogenesis, the pattern of gut cells with the FMRFamide-like phenotype that is present in adults is already established. The early occurrence of FMRFamide-like molecules in O. labronica suggests that these molecules are involved as pre-nervous growth signals in the regulation of basic neuronal cell behaviors. 相似文献

The sublethal effects of pyriproxyfen (PYR, a juvenile hormone analogue) were investigated for two consecutive generations on life-history parameters, such as developmental time, pupal weight, fecundity, fertility and longevity of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). After topical application bioassay of third instar larvae, the LC25 and LC50 values (as sublethal doses) were determined to be 1.49 and 2.01 μg/μl, respectively. The results showed that the egg incubation period, larval and pupal duration times and oviposition period were increased in treated groups compared with the control (treated with distilled water). Pupal weight, adult longevity, fecundity and fertility were significantly reduced in the treatment groups compared with the control. Using the age-stage, two-sex life table analysis, we found that the intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), gross reproduction rate (GRR) and net reproductive rate (R 0) significantly decreased while the mean generation time (T) and doubling time (DT) increased in two treatment groups compared with the control. In addition, administration of PYR induced morphogenetic abnormalities including untanned pupae, larval–pupal intermediates and various defective adults. The LC50 value was more effective on all of the above biological characteristics than the LC25 for both generations, although parents were more affected than the offspring. In general, our results revealed that PYR was highly effective against P. xylostella in the laboratory both directly (causing mortality) and indirectly (disruption of normal growth and development). We conclude that PYR is an excellent candidate for suppressing populations of P. xylostella through its sublethal effects. 相似文献

Ophryotrocha longidentata sp.n. is described from the Skagerak, West Coast of Sweden. The species lives on muddy bottoms at a depth of about 100 m. It is distinguished by having biarticulated palps and by the structure of the jaw apparatus. Dorvillea erucaeformis (Malmgren) from the West Coast of Norway is redescribed and re-established. Ophyotrocha is easy to keep in the laboratory and has therefore been used in several studies of evolution and speciation. The phylogenetic relationships within the group are, however, still not clear and morphological and molecular data are contradictory. Here we attempt to shed light on the phylogeny by adding an additional gene (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) to the previous analyses of the group. However, the results are still incongruent with the results from the morphological data. We also include a species of the genus Iphitime, and conclude that this species falls within the Ophryotrocha clade. The implications are discussed. 相似文献

Ophryotrocha labronica, as typical for Eunicida, has a complex jaw apparatus consisting of ventral mandibles and dorsal maxillae. Mandibles are not replaced but are retained throughout life. Larval mandibles have adult-sized cutting plates but their proximal shafts lengthen and enlarge as the worm grows. The maxillary apparatus of O. labronica undergoes three moults or replacements. The initial, or larval maxillae, consisting of two paired basal plates and two paired free denticles, develop in the unreleased larvae. They are replaced in the 5-setiger juvenile by the P1-maxillae consisting of falcate forceps and six denticles. The second moult occurs in the 8- to 9-setiger juveniles and results in the P2-maxillae with bidentate forceps and seven denticles, and the third and final moult results in the K-maxillae and seven denticles. The K-maxillae develop in 9- to 12-setiger males and 13- to 15-setiger females and are not replaced but enlarge proximally. Thus the K-forceps can be traced back through the P2-forceps, P1-forceps, to the larval basal plates, indicating the apomorphic state of the K-forceps. Three pulp cavities, separated by darker fusion lines are visible in weakly sclerotised young K-forceps suggesting the fusion of three separate elements. It is concluded that the Ophryotrocha forceps are homologous to the superior and probably inferior basal plates of other dorvilleids. The internal structure of the Ophryotrocha forceps demonstrates that they are not homologous to the labidognath maxilla I as has been suggested. 相似文献

Summary The complex catecholaminergic (CA) nervous system of the polychaete Ophryotrocha puerilis is documented using glyoxylic acid induced fluorescence (GIF) and immunohistochemistry. CA-neurons are found both in the central and peripheral nervous system. In the brain, about 50 CA-neurons are present in the perikaryal layer together with numerous CA fibres. Two pairs of CA perikarya are characteristic for each ganglion of the ventral nerve cord. CA-neurites in the ventral nerve cord are mainly arranged in 4 strands paralleling the longitudinal axis of the worm. Fluorescent neurons with receptive ciliary structures are present in body appendages (antennae, palps, urites, parapodial cirri), in the body-wall, and within the oesophageal wall. Furthermore, a subepidermal nerve net of free CA nerve endings has been found. After incubation of specimens with dopamine prior to the development of GIF more fluorescent perikarya could be observed; the fluorescence was also intensified. Pre-incubation with reserpine reduced the intensity of GIF. Results of high pressure liquid chromatography and immunostaining with a polyclonal antibody against a dopamine-glutaraldehyde-complex suggest that dopamine is the major CA transmitter. It is thought that dopaminergic neurons together with ciliary receptive structures act as mechano- and/or chemoreceptors. 相似文献

Reproduction and larval morphology of Ophryotrocha puerilis, O. labronica, O. nologlandulata, O. hartmanni , and O. bacci are described. All species have been cultivated in the laboratory. The morphology of adults and larvae is uniform, but there is a considerable variation in the shape of the egg masses. The interrelations between members of the genus Ophryotrocha are discussed: Gonochoric species have the same type of egg mass and the same chromosome number. O. puerilis is unique as a protandrous hermaphrodite. Among contemporary hermaphrodites with male and female segments, fusiform egg masses with a rigid surface are correlated with one larval type, gelatinous egg masses with another larval type. 相似文献

Age-specific survival schedules of females from three genetically different clones of Brachionus plicatilis were analyzed at several environmental conditions in the laboratory.Lifespan showed the expected decrease with increasing temperature, but a general trend with salinity or genotype was not observed. Probability of death increased with age, as tested by polynomial regression analysis of the survival curve and using theoretical mortality distributions. Three two-parameter models (linear-exponential model, Weibull model, and Gompertz model) were fitted to the survival data. Fitting of these models to data was rather poor, but the Gompertz model and, to a lesser extent, the Weibull model fitted the data better than the linear-exponential model. Parameters obtained from the survival curve analyses were related to other demographic parameters. A significant relationship between the shape parameter of the Gompertz model and the cohort generation time was detected, suggesting, but not proving, an effect of reproductive effort on aging. 相似文献

Neotenotrocha sterreri gen. et sp. n. is described from Bermuda. It is a gonochoristic. interstitial polychaete exhibiting sexual dimorphism. The maximum length of males is only 140 μm. while females may be up to 255 μm long. They are thus the smallest polychactes known to contain a mature ovary. The new species is referred to the polychaete family Dorvilleidae, primarily due to the presence of a etenognath jaw apparatus. In almost all external characters the new form is strongly reduced. lacking parapodia, setae, antennae, and palps, whereas larval characters such as trochae and a neurotroch are retained in adults. In the light of earlier literature on phylogeny within Dorvilleidae and the likelihood that Iphitimidae and Dinophilidae are closely affiliated with the latter family, the unique combination of characters in Neotenotrocha is of special interest. A phylogenetic analysis of all apparently valid genera in the three families leads to the hypothesis that Dinophilidae and Iphitimidae represent monophyletic and paraphyletic subgroups. respectively, within Dorvilleidae. Accordingly. the definition of Dorvilleidae is emended and a key to the genera provided. The species Ougia macilenta (Oug, 1978) is referred to Parougia Wolf. 1986 and the generic status of Meiodorvillea apalpata Jumars. 1974 and Protodorvillea gaspeensis Pettibone. 1961 is discussed. Some remarks on the applicability of concepts such as neoteny and progenesis in the characterisation of interstitial dorvilleids are included. On the basis of the cladogram mid these considerations. it is hypothesized that this group may have originated in the single evolutionary event. 相似文献

Variations in the life tables and other biological attributes of four strains of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) from geographically isolated regions of India that had been reared to the fifth generation in the laboratory were assessed under a standardized rearing regime under constant laboratory conditions. Two strains from arid habitats [Jodhpur (JD) and Bikaner (BKN)], one from a semi-arid inland habitat [Bathinda (BTH)], one from a semi-arid coastal habitat [Jamnagar (JMN)] and a standard laboratory strain (LAB) were compared. Horizontal life-table parameters were measured for each strain. Egg mortality ranged from 4.4% (JD and BTH) to 19.5% (BKN). The lowest rate of adult emergence and highest female : male ratio were found in BKN, and the highest rate of adult emergence and lowest female : male ratio were recorded in BTH. The egg-hatching period was longest in BTH and shortest in LAB. The duration from oviposition to adult emergence was longest in JD and shortest in LAB. Females lived longer than males in all strains. The net reproductive rates (R(0) ) of all field-derived strains (122.9-162.2) differed significantly between strains and were significantly greater than that of LAB (107.6). Similarly, both the intrinsic rate of increase (r(m) ) and finite rate of increase (λ) were found to be lower in LAB than in the field strains, but the mean generation time (T) and doubling time (DT) were longest in LAB. For several life-table attributes, JD and BTH clustered together and were more similar to JMN than to BKN and LAB. The results indicate that BTH, BKN and JD can be characterized as r-strategists, more so than JMN. Overall fecundity increased with age. Differences in annual temperature ranges and mean annual rainfall between locations were positively correlated (r = 0.46-0.97) with egg production, female life expectancy, R(0) , r(m) , λ and T. The results suggest that strains of Cx. quinquefasciatus from different geographical areas with contrasting habitats vary in their survival and reproductive strategies accordingly. 相似文献

1 Life tables were constructed for seven generations of the invasive horse‐chestnut leaf miner Cameraria ohridella in Switzerland, to assess the factors allowing the moth to build and maintain outbreak densities and to identify ‘gaps’ among their mortality factors that could be targeted by new control methods. The fecundity of females was calculated and the mortality factors affecting all developmental stages determined. 2 Females contained 106.6 eggs. In captivity, the mean number of eggs laid per female varied between 34 and 82 eggs, with a maximum of 184 eggs. Egg mortality was 18–75% and was mostly due to unknown factors. 3 The main mortality factors affecting larvae and pupae in the leaves were predation by birds and arthropods in all generation and leaf senescence in the autumn generation. Parasitoids killed less than 5% of the population. 4 Nearly 90% of overwintering pupae died in dead leaves, the majority of them being killed by earthworms and other leaf decomposers. As a result, the overwintering generations were the only ones showing a net rate of increase less than one. Non‐overwintering generations had net rates of increase between four and 11, allowing populations to build up from spring to autumn. 5 The persistence of high outbreak densities in Europe is explained by a combination of at least three factors: (i) high fecundity; (ii) multivoltinism; (iii) the unusually low impact of traditional natural enemies of leaf miners and particularly parasitoids. 6 Yearly variations in population densities could be at least partly explained by differences in larval mortality due to leaf senescence and intraspecific competition in the last generation in autumn. 相似文献
