External coloration in animals depends on the interaction of several different factors including the genetics and epigenetics processes that underlie the color expression, the mechanisms of color perception, and the general mechanisms controlling color evolution and function.Among all, camouflages from predators and conspicuousness are of particular interest because pose animal to choose between opposite adjustment in coloration. The external coloration of crustaceans is mainly due to the accumulation of carotenoids in the exoskeleton and the epidermal layer, and the trade-off between camouflage and communication had led to a variety of responses, involving signal partitioning, spectral sensibility, changing coloration,or signaling behavior. Here,we used digital images to explore intrapopulation variability of the external coloration of Pacifastacus leniusculus among body regions within an individual and between sexes. We found that 1)ventral coloration of claws are more saturated and brilliant than upper parts,2)males express a more saturated and brightness coloration than females, especially on the lower portion of claws,3)color intensity and brightness increases with size differently in different body regions, and 4)brightness is more variable in males than in females. All the above patterns support the hypothesis that color in this species could be the result of a compromise between camouflage from predators and conspicuousness for communication. The results of this study suggest that carotenoid might have something to do with intraspecific communication and perform more complex functions than that of a simple pigment.  相似文献

Many species of crayfish have been shown to use disturbance chemicals to detect the presence of predators and other dangers, yet there have been no investigations in adults or juveniles of Pacifastacus leniusculus, a key species, particularly for invasive species study. Juveniles and adults were exposed to conditioned water from stressed and damaged conspecific males. Both responded to these odours, but did not respond to water from stressed or damaged males with blocked nephropores. Urine from stressed and damaged males also elicited a significant response, which was much stronger than that of conditioned water. Odours from urine and water of damaged individuals induced a greater response than stress odours. We propose that chemicals released by stressed or damaged Pa. leniusculus are the same substance, but quantities released in the urine vary in context-specific circumstances. Predator-odour conditioned water from Perca fluviatilis elicited no response, but conditioned Anguilla anguilla water stimulated significant responses in juveniles and adults. Juveniles exhibited the strongest responses to all odours. These results show that Pa. leniusculus utilises both conspecific and heterospecific sources of info-chemicals to assess risk in the environment, which may contribute to its success as an invasive species and give it a competitive advantage.  相似文献

This study presents a revised method for the extraction of mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) from crayfish species of aquacultural interest, Pacifastacus leniusculus. The mean size of the mitochondrial genome is approximately 18 000 bp. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis performed on the mtDNA has revealed extensive genetic variability within this species. The estimated percentage of nucleotide sequence divergence among the four haplotypes found for P. leniusculus ranges from 1.16 to 3.99%. These data suggest that RFLP analysis of mtDNA may provide greater resolution than protein electrophoresis for population identification among signal crayfish populations. This marker offers new avenues for aquaculture and for understanding the genetic structure and evolutionary history of crayfish populations.  相似文献

1.  In a 1-month outdoor stream channel experiment, we investigated the relative importance of habitat complexity (i.e. cobbled area) and the presence of adult signal crayfish ( Pacifastacus leniusculus ) males on the survival and growth of juveniles.
2.  In treatments with high habitat complexity, more juveniles survived, more were newly moulted and they had a higher specific growth rate (SGR) at the end of the experiment than juveniles in treatments with low habitat complexity. The presence of adult males did not affect survival, moulting stage or growth of the juveniles.
3.  The presence of adult males decreased juvenile activity during night. Juveniles in treatments with low habitat complexity were more active than juveniles in high habitat complexity during both day and night.
4.  There was no difference in total invertebrate biomass between treatments. However, some invertebrate taxa, such as Chironomidae larvae, were affected by habitat complexity or the presence of adult crayfish. Juvenile crayfish in all channels had consumed detritus, algae and Chironomidae larvae and there were no differences in gut contents or stable isotope signals (carbon and nitrogen) between treatments, indicating a similar diet among the juveniles across treatments. However, the biomass of chironomids was significantly higher in channels with adult crayfish present, indicating a decreased consumption of chironomids by juveniles in the presence of adults.
5.  Our results suggest that the recruitment of juvenile crayfish is mostly affected by habitat complexity. The competition for food and shelter and aggressive interactions between the juveniles were most pronounced in low habitat complexity, indicating that habitats with a good access to shelter will enhance recruitment of juvenile crayfish in streams.  相似文献

1. Crayfish are amongst the most frequently introduced non‐native aquatic organisms, with well‐documented negative effects on a large number of freshwater taxa. Many crayfish‐control strategies make use of manual removal by trapping, a method known preferentially to remove the largest individuals, leaving the juvenile population almost entirely untrapped. 2. A predicted outcome of trapping bias in riparian habitats is that removed individuals could be replaced by large crayfish immigrating from surrounding, untrapped, areas. We tested the hypothesis that removal by trapping of American signal crayfish from a U.K. river would result in increased rates of immigration, and increased distances moved, of crayfish from untrapped areas. 3. We studied four stretches of the River Windrush each 1 km in length and divided into three sections; a 250‐m long upstream section, a 500‐m middle section and a 250‐m downstream section. At two sites (removal sites), signal crayfish were trapped and removed from the 500‐m middle sections; at the other two (non‐removal), they were marked and returned. All crayfish captured in the upstream and downstream sections were marked and returned. 4. Probability of capture was higher for larger individuals with both chelae intact, and larger crayfish were more likely to immigrate from the upstream and downstream sections into the middle. The percentage of captured crayfish immigrating into the middle sections was the same (3.7%) in both removal and non‐removal sites. However, the mean distance that crayfish moved when immigrating was significantly greater at removal sites (239 m) than at non‐removal sites (187 m). 5. These results imply that removal of large individuals may have reduced the potential for interference competition by increasing the relative competitiveness of the immigrating individuals and permitting them to make larger movements. Consequently, the impact of manual removal strategies, both on the signal crayfish population and other biota affected by them, is likely to be reduced at the point of removal, but to extend at least 200 m beyond the trapped length of river.  相似文献

Exposure of adult crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus to Artificial Freshwater (AFW) media containing 1.5 m and 0.15 mmol x l(-1) total ammonia [Tamm; 0.1 x acute lethal concentration (24 h LC50) and 0.01 x 24 h LC50] and adjusted to pH 6.5, pH 8.2 and pH 10.5 resulted in significant increases in haemolymph ammonia over a 24-h period. Ammonia accumulated most rapidly at pH 10.5. These media were chosen to expose animals to a range of different un-ionised ammonia (UIA) [NH3] and ionised ammonia [NH4+] concentrations. From comparisons of measured transepithelial potential differences (PDte) with calculated Nernst potentials (PDNH4+) for the known haemolymph-to-medium gradients of [NH4+], it was deduced that, in pH 8.2 and pH 6.5 AFW, NH4+ was not in thermodynamic equilibrium across the integument (presumably gill epithelium). In pH 10.5 AFW with 1.5 mmol x l(-1) Tamm (predominantly NH3), the accumulation of ammonia in the haemolymph was in the NH4+ form due to haemolymph pH regulation by the crayfish in this alkaline external medium. Measured net fluxes of ammonia (Jamm(net)) were inwardly directed and maximal when [NH3] was the main component externally, but were also significant at pH 8.2 with high [NH4+] ([NH4+]:[NH3] approximately 20:1). Haemolymph Na+ depletion was significant and, over the 24-h exposure period, most rapid in high [NH3] medium but [Cl-] was unaffected. However, paradoxically, sodium uptake (measured JNa(in) on immediate transfer to high Tamm medium) was not significantly inhibited when [NH3] was the predominant ammonia species. In 1.5 mmol x l(-1) Tamm (mainly [NH4+), VNa(in) (the active component of JNa(in)) was significantly inhibited, particularly at low external [Na+]. This inhibition could not be demonstrated as one of competition at an Na+/NH4+ apical gill exchange site. The resultant net efflux of sodium from the animal showed that the ability of the animals to balance sodium losses at low external [Na+] was severely affected. Longer exposure to pH 10.5 AFW with high [NH3] (12 h) resulted in significantly increased JNa(out), while not significantly affecting JNa(in). Analysis of urinary Na+ losses showed that, while urinary flow rate and water reabsorption was most likely unaffected by ammonia exposure, final urine [Na+] was significantly elevated. The resulting urinary Na+ loss accounted for 63% of the increased JNa(out) in high [NH3] medium.  相似文献

Although the temporal consistency of resting metabolic rate in individual animals is generally considered to be a universal phenomenon, studies on invertebrates are still scarce. Here, we studied the repeatability of standard metabolic rate in the signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). We measured oxygen consumption twice on the same individuals, on average in 97-day intervals. At intermolt stage, the standard metabolic rate was a repeatable trait. However, molting increased significantly the minimum metabolic rate, thus emphasizing the role of animal physiological state in determining the rate of metabolism.  相似文献

2. Removal by trapping may be used in an attempt to delay colonisation of new stretches by invasive crayfish. It is, however, unclear what effects trapping may have on movement distances of crayfish in wild populations. We examine the impacts of removal by trapping on the movements of American signal crayfish in two UK rivers. 3. We studied four 100 m stretches of two rivers, the Evenlode and Thame, comprising two removal and two non‐removal stretches. Each river supported both treatments. Half of the crayfish captured from the removal sections were removed and humanely destroyed by freezing, and half were marked with their trap location and released there. All crayfish captured from the non‐removal sections were marked and returned at the point of capture. 4. Mean movement distances were smaller in the removal stretches than the non‐removal stretches, both within capture sessions (10.8 and 16.0 m, respectively) and between sessions (14.5 and 24.6 m, respectively), suggesting that removal trapping resulted in the remaining crayfish making smaller movements. Larger crayfish under both treatments made substantially larger movements than those with smaller carapace lengths, both within capture sessions (range 7.6–19.6 m) and between range capture sessions (range 8.9–32.6 m). 5. The results of this study are consistent with expectations if removal by trapping lowered population densities, which we speculate may have affected movement distances directly or indirectly through increasing the availability of food and shelter. 6. This study suggests that trapping at the margins of a population may be sufficient to delay colonisation of new stretches by: (i) maintaining low densities and therefore reducing movements, and (ii) preferentially reducing the population of large individuals, which make the largest movements. However, it remains unlikely that any trapping programme can entirely prevent emigration /dispersal, and therefore colonisation, by signal crayfish.  相似文献

This study reports about the spermatozoal ultrastructure of three species of astacid crayfish, i.e., the stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium, signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, and noble crayfish Astacus astacus. The acrosome is a cup shaped and electron‐dense structure at the anterior of the spermatozoon and comprises three layers of differing electron densities filled with parallel filaments that extend from the base to the apical zone. The acrosome was significantly longer in A. astacus than in P. leniusculus and the shortest acrosome belongs to A. torrentium. The width of the acrosome was significantly narrower in A. torrentium than in P. leniusculus and the widest acrosome belongs to A. astacus. The L:W ratio was significantly greater in A. torrentium than in P. leniusculus and the lowest ratio belongs to A. astacus. Radial arms are visible on each side of the acrosome or nucleus in sagittal view and wrap around the spermatozoon. Each radial arm comprises a parallel bundle of microtubules arranged along the long axis within a sheath. The nucleus, with decondensed material, is located in the posterior of the cell. All parts of the spermatozoon are tightly enclosed within an extracellular capsule. Despite a well‐conserved general structure and similarity of pattern among these spermatozoa, differences in the dimensions of the acrosome within the studied species may be useful to help distinguish the different crayfish species. Summary Nitrite in the external freshwater medium was found to be toxic to Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana (48 h LC500.7 mM NO 2 ). It produced significant changes in haemolymph ionic concentration and acid-base status. Exposure to 1.0 mM NO 2 resulted in a rapid, active accumulation of nitrite in the haemolymph (to 25 mM NO 2 after 24 h) and caused the partial inhibition of Cl uptake. Some reduction in Cl efflux rate was seen. In 1.0 mM NO 2 a rapid depletion of haemolymph [Cl] was observed (50 mM decrease in 27 h). Nitrite competitively inhibited active Cl uptake (Km increased from 0.42 to 1.22 mM; Ki=0.45 mM). To achieve Cl balance in this medium, depleted crayfish would require a two-fold increase in external [Cl]. A lesser decrease in haemolymph [Na+] was found while osmotic pressure was relatively unaffected. Haemolymph [HCO 3 ] showed a significant increase and was accompanied, unexpectedly, by an acidosis. Possible sources of the excess HCO 3 , perhaps by inhibition of normal Cl/HCO 3 branchial exchange or release from CaCO3 stores, are discussed. Haemolymph clearance of NO 2 was slower than uptake as was the restoration of [Cl] on recovery in nitrite-free medium.Abbreviations AFWM artificial freshwater medium - BOD biochemical oxygen demand - J out Cl chloride efflux - J in Cl chloride influx - J in Cl chloride influx - J net base net base flux - J net base net base flux - J in(p) Cl passive chloride influx - J out efflux - LC 50 median lethal concentration - NEDE N-1-Naphthylethylenediamine - SEM standard error of mean - TEP transepithelial potential difference - V in Cl active chloride uptake  相似文献

The expression of both swimmeret and postural motor patterns in crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) were affected by stimulation of a second root of a thoracic ganglion. The response of the swimmeret system depended on the state of the postural system. In most cases, the response of the swimmeret system outlasted the stimulus.Stimulation of a thoracic second root also elicited coordinated responses from the postural system, that outlasted the stimulus. In different preparations, either the flexor excitor motor neurones or the extensor excitor motor neurones were excited by this stimulation. In every case, excitation of one set of motor neurones was accompanied by inhibition of that group's functional antagonists. This stimulation seemed to coordinate the activity of both systems; when stimulation inhibited the flexor motor neurones, then the extensor motor neurones and the swimmeret system were excited. When stimulation excited the flexor motor neurones, then the extensor motor neurones and the swimmeret system were inhibited. Two classes of interneurones that responded to stimulation of a thoracic second root were encountered in the first abdominal ganglion. These interneurones could be the pathway that coordinates the response of the postural and swimmeret systems to stimulation of a thoracic second root.Abbreviations TSR thoracic second root - epsp excitatory post-synaptic potential - ipsp inhibitory post-synaptic potential - EJP excitatory jonctional potential - PS power-stroke - RS return-stroke - INT interneurone - N1 first segmental nerve - N2 second segmental nerve - N3 third segmental nerve - A1 abdominal ganglion 1  相似文献

An antibacterial peptide with 16 amino acid residues was found in plasma of the freshwater crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus. This peptide, designated astacidin 1, was purified by cation-exchange column chromatography and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Astacidin 1 has a broad range of antibacterial activity, and it inhibits growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The primary sequence of astacidin 1 was FKVQNQHGQVVKIFHH-COOH. The molecular mass was 1945.2 Da, and no carbohydrate-linked amino acid residues could be found by mass spectrometry. A synthetic astacidin 1 resulted in similar activity as the authentic astacidin 1 against Gram-positive bacteria, whereas it had less or no activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Three amino-terminal-truncated synthetic peptides were made; they all showed low activity, suggesting that the amino-terminal part of astacidin 1 contributes to the antibacterial activity. The structure of astacidin 1 based on the CD results showed that it has a beta-sheet structure in citric acid buffer at pH 4, 6, and 8. Cloning of astacidin 1 shows that it is the carboxyl-terminal part of crayfish hemocyanin and that astacidin 1 is produced by a proteolytic cleavage from hemocyanin under acidic conditions. The processing and release of astacidin 1 from hemocyanin is enhanced when crayfish are injected with lipopolysaccharide or glucan.  相似文献

1. We used historical sources, morphology‐based taxonomy and mtDNA sequence data to address questions about the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus. These included evaluating unrecognised cryptic diversity and investigating the extent to which P. leniusculus may have been introduced within its presumed native range in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Our study builds and expands on Pacific Northwest phylogeographic knowledge, particularly related to patterns of glacial refugia for freshwater species. 2. Extensive collections (824 specimens) from British Columbia (Canada), Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington (United States) were used to characterise P. leniusculus at the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. Genetic groups within the species were elucidated by phylogenetics and amova ; evolutionary relationships within the most common and diverse group were investigated using a statistical parsimony haplotype network, a nested amova , and tests of isolation by distance. Morphological measurements were used to relate findings of molecular analyses to three historically recognised P. leniusculus subspecies and characterise cryptic diversity by morphology. 3. We found substantial cryptic diversity, with three groups highly distinct from P. leniusculus in discrete geographic regions: the Chehalis River glacial refugium, Central Oregon and the Okanagan Plateau. Disjunct distributions of P. leniusculus relative to these cryptic groups and known patterns of Pleistocene glaciation and landscape evolution cast doubt on whether P. leniusculus is native to some areas such as coastal drainages of northern Washington and southern British Columbia. Morphological traits previously used to characterise P. leniusculus subspecies still persist but may be incapable of distinguishing P. leniusculus from newly discovered cryptic groups. 4. Cryptic diversity found within P. leniusculus highlights the pressing need for a thorough investigation of the genus Pacifastacus using data based on more extensive gene and taxon sampling. It also warrants conservation attention, as introductions of P. leniusculus within the Pacific Northwest may carry risks of hybridisation and introgression for cryptic groups. Owing to high genetic diversity and limited dispersal capacity relative to more vagile organisms like freshwater fish, crayfish of the genus Pacifastacus offer powerful potential insights into the geological history and phylogeography of the Pacific Northwest region. Finally, by shedding light on the long‐neglected native range of P. leniusculus, our results should also better inform our understanding of potential source populations for, and the ecology of, this important invasive species in regions including Europe, Japan and elsewhere in North America.  相似文献

Invasive species are a major cause of species extinction in freshwater ecosystems, and crayfish species are particularly pervasive. The invasive American signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus has impacts over a range of trophic levels, but particularly on benthic aquatic macroinvertebrates. Our study examined the effect on the macroinvertebrate community of removal trapping of signal crayfish from UK rivers. Crayfish were intensively trapped and removed from two tributaries of the River Thames to test the hypothesis that lowering signal crayfish densities would result in increases in macroinvertebrate numbers and taxon richness. We removed 6181 crayfish over four sessions, resulting in crayfish densities that decreased toward the center of the removal sections. Conversely in control sections (where crayfish were trapped and returned), crayfish density increased toward the center of the section. Macroinvertebrate numbers and taxon richness were inversely correlated with crayfish densities. Multivariate analysis of the abundance of each taxon yielded similar results and indicated that crayfish removals had positive impacts on macroinvertebrate numbers and taxon richness but did not alter the composition of the wider macroinvertebrate community. Synthesis and applications: Our results demonstrate that non‐eradication‐oriented crayfish removal programmes may lead to increases in the total number of macroinvertebrates living in the benthos. This represents the first evidence that removing signal crayfish from riparian systems, at intensities feasible during control attempts or commercial crayfishing, may be beneficial for a range of sympatric aquatic macroinvertebrates.  相似文献

The prophenoloxidase activating enzyme (ppA), a serine proteinase catalyzing the conversion of prophenoloxidase to an active phenoloxidase, has a molecular mass of about 36 kDa in its active form. This protein was cloned from a blood cell cDNA library and its corresponding cDNA of 1736 base pairs encodes a zymogenic protein (proppA) of 468 amino acids. An antibody raised against a synthetic peptide derived from a region of the cDNA sequence could efficiently inhibit the beta-1,3-glucan triggered activation of prophenoloxidase in vitro. The C-terminal half of the proppA is composed of a typical serine proteinase domain, with a sequence similar to other invertebrate and vertebrate serine proteinases. The N-terminal half contains a cationic glycine-rich domain, a cationic proline-rich domain and a clip-domain, in which the disulfide-bonding pattern is likely to be identical to those of the horseshoe crab big defensin and mammalian beta-defensins. Antibodies made against both the C- and the N-terminal halves recognize two proppAs under reducing conditions. However, under nonreducing conditions only the anti-C antibody recognized the two proppAs, which suggests that a conformational change takes place upon reduction that allows the anti-N to react with the N-terminal half of proppA. The recombinant clip-domain in crayfish proppA was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and the resulting peptide exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains such as Micrococcus luteus Ml11 and Bacillus megaterium Bm11 with 50% growth inhibitory concentrations of 1.43 microM and 17.9 microM, respectively. These results suggest that the clip-domains in proppAs may function as antibacterial peptides.  相似文献

Fluoride bioaccumulation in the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana) was examined through field and laboratory studies, considering in the latter the effects of several biotic and abiotic factors: water chloride content, developmental stage, sex, and tissue. The potential use of P. leniusculus as bioindicator of fluoride pollution in freshwater ecosystems was also assessed by testing the capability of juvenile crayfish to release fluoride during depuration periods. After discussing the obtained results, we concluded that: (1) fluoride pollution by industrial effluents may significantly increase the fluoride content in signal crayfish inhabiting polluted freshwater ecosystems; (2) although high chloride levels in the aquatic medium may significantly reduce the fluoride content in signal crayfish exposed to fluoride pollution conditions, fluoride bioaccumulation can still occur in significant amounts; (3) sex does not seem to be an important biotic factor affecting fluoride bioaccumulation in signal crayfish; (4) in contrast, the type of tissue is an important biotic factor affecting fluoride bioaccumulation in signal crayfish, with the exoskeleton accumulating more fluoride than the muscle, in absolute terms, but with the muscle accumulating more fluoride than the exoskeleton, in relative terms (in relation to pre-effluent/control values); (5) the developmental stage seems to be another important biotic factor affecting fluoride bioaccumulation in signal crayfish, with juveniles being able to accumulate fluoride more rapidly than adults under fluoride pollution conditions; (6) although, during depuration periods, signal crayfish may significantly release fluoride, they can still retain significant amounts of the fluoride previously bioaccumulated during exposure periods. We can overall conclude that fluoride bioaccumulation in signal crayfish may be used as suitable bioindicator of fluoride pollution in those freshwater ecosystems where it is already present. However, this notable capability to accumulate and retain fluoride poses a potential risk to human health when signal crayfish from fluoride polluted areas are consumed.  相似文献

Abstract. Among malacostracan crustaceans, intracerebral ocelli were first discovered in Isopoda, but they have been more recently reported from a crayfish ( Cherax destructor ) and a sandhopper ( Talitrus saltator ). This electron microscopic study increases the number of crayfish taxa in which intracerebral ocelli are now known to occur by two: Astacidae and Cambaridae. These photoreceptors are always integrated into the anteromedio-dorsal part of the brain and are not visible externally. Each ocellus is made up of 4–5 photoreceptor cells and is characterized by the presence of a fused rhabdom. The occurrence of different kinds of lysosomes in the cytoplasm is indicative of metabolic activity and perhaps membrane turnover. One typical feature of crayfish ocelli is their extraordinary variability in number. This trait is exemplified by individuals of Pacifastacus leniusculus , where as many as 14 ocelli were identified in a single brain. The arrangement of the ocelli is often not symmetrical with regard to the brain's midline and the ocelli always lack dioptric structures. Thus, it is difficult to see how they are involved in image formation. However, further research is needed to determine the precise role of these "hidden" receptors.  相似文献

An immunocytochemical technique with the use of three different antibodies raised against serotonin was applied to localize the immunoreactive neurons in the central nervous system of the crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus. Immunoreactive neurons were found in three optic ganglia (medulla externa, interna and terminalis). They appeared in three layers of the medulla externa and interna. The medulla terminalis displayed three prominent groups of immunoreactive perikarya and mainly marginal immunoreactive fibres. Immunoreactive areas of the brain comprised the protocerebral bridge, central body, paracentral lobes and two loci in the anterior portion of the protocerebrum, i.e., the terminal areas for immunoreactive fibres from the optic centres. The olfactory lobes showed a specific immunoreactive pattern. In addition, diffusely and sparsely distributed immunoreactive fibres were found throughout the brain. The immunoreactive neurons are largely localized in the same areas of the central nervous system as the catecholaminergic neurons although some distinct differences occur.  相似文献

Summer distributions of the invasive signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) were investigated in relation to physicochemistry in a Kusiro Moor marsh and its inflows and outflows in northern Japan. Maximum crayfish abundance and biomass were 1.04 individuals/m2 and 3.56 g dry mass (DM)/m2 in littoral marsh habitats, and 5.84 individuals/m2 and 13.48 g DM/m2 in stream habitats. Classification tree analysis was used to predict crayfish occurrence at 102 sites from all habitats (i.e. littoral marsh, pelagic marsh and stream) while regression tree analyses were used to predict crayfish abundance at littoral marsh and stream sites separately. The classification tree showed that crayfish occurrence was primarily determined by undercut bank volume regardless of habitat identity. When undercut bank volume was <0.0054 m3, crayfish were predicted to be absent at marsh sites, but expected to occur at stream sites where pH and water temperature exceeded 6.5 and 14.3°C, respectively. The regression tree using only littoral marsh sites showed that undercut bank volume, followed by dissolved oxygen level, determined the splits of the tree. Crayfish abundance was highest when undercut bank volume was >0.61 m3, and moderately high when dissolved oxygen was >9.09 mg/l and undercut bank volume was <0.61 m3. On the other hand, the regression tree using only stream sites showed that water temperature was the major predictor that determined the splits. We discuss the roles of physicochemical factors as limiting factors of the distribution pattern of the invasive crayfish.  相似文献
