Responses of neurons of the lateral (LPO) and medial (MPO) subdivisions of the preoptic region (RPO) and of the supraoptic nucleus (SO) of the hypothalamus at infusions of up to 400 µl of a hypotonic (0.2%) or a hypertonic (0.3%) NaCl solution or an isotonic (5.5%) glucose solution into the homolateral internal carotid artery were studied in acute experiments on ketamine-anesthetized cats. Changes in the firing frequency were exhibited by 69% of the examinedRPO andSO neurons, the response being of four different types: a monophasic increase (1st-type) or a monophasic decrease (2nd-type) in the activity; biphasic responses where an initial frequency rise was followed by inhibition (3rd-type) and vice versa (4th-type). Of all the neuronal responses to all stimulations, 50% (121/245) were of the 1st type; 11% (26/245), of the 2nd type; 5% (14/245), of the 3rd type; and 3% (7/245), of the 4th type. No neurons with 1st-type responses to infusion of the hypotonic NaCl solution were found in the medial sections of theMPO, and of the hypertonic solution, in the lateral sections of theLPO. Neurons with 2nd-type responses to infusion of hypo- and hypertonic NaCl solutions were almost solely detected in theSO, whereas units with such responses to glucose infusions were observed only in theRPO, being fully absent in theSO, where this stimulation gave rise only to 1st-type responses. Responses of neurons of the lateral and medial parts of the preoptic regionRPO (LPO andMPO, respectively) and the supraoptic nucleus (SO) of the hypothalamus to an increase in systemic blood pressure were studied in acute experiments on ketamine-anesthetized cats. The blood pressure increase resulted from the injection of a 0.002% phenylephrine hydrochloride solution in the femoral vien. Responses of theRPO neurons to suprathreshold pressor stimulation were monophasic activation (48% of units), monophasic inhibition (10%), or two-phase activational-inhibitory complex (14%). The rest of the neurons did not respond to the systemic pressure increase. Pressor stimulations evoked the responses only of the first and third type inMPO neurons, and only of the first and second type inLPO neurons, whileSO neurons generated responses only of the first type. Hysteresis of a varying degree was manifested in the changes of neuronal spike activity accompanying shifts of the systemic pressure. In some neurons there was no strict correlation between the pressor effect and the onset of neuronal response. Osmosensitivity of a part of neurons was tested. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an acute exercise bout in the morning in the post‐absorptive or postprandial state on the glycemic and insulinemic response to three standardized meals throughout the day. It is hypothesized that post‐absorptive exercise enhances fat oxidation rate during exercise and thereafter attenuates the glucose and insulin response to subsequent meals. Research Methods and Procedures: Seven sedentary males with metabolic syndrome (age, 45 ± 11 years; BMI, 34 ± 3 kg/m2) were studied in a crossover design comparing three conditions: no exercise, postprandial and post‐absorptive exercise (at ~60% of the individual V?O2max for 45 minutes). Substrate use was evaluated by indirect calorimetry during exercise. Venous blood samples were taken at regular (30‐ to 60‐minute) intervals throughout the day, and glucose, insulin, and triglyceride concentrations were determined. Results: During exercise, a higher fat oxidation rate was observed in the post‐absorptive than the postprandial state. The glycemic response to a standardized high‐carbohydrate breakfast was lower when exercising after breakfast than when exercising before breakfast. There was no effect of either exercise mode on glucose and insulin response to lunch and supper. Discussion: Post‐absorptive exercise has the advantage of promoting fat use, whereas postprandial exercise can attenuate the glycemic response to breakfast. Neither exercise mode acutely induces improved glucoregulation later during the day. The impact of meal timing on the effects of regular exercise training on glycemic control in this population remains to be studied.  相似文献

In experiments on anesthetized cats, 80 neurons of the primary auditory cortex (A1) were studied. Within the examined neuronal population, 66 cells (or 82.5%) were monosensory units, i.e., they responded only to acoustic stimulations (sound clicks and tones); 8 (10.1%) neurons responded to acoustic stimulation and electrocutaneous stimulation (ECS); the rest of the units (7.4%) were either trisensory (responded also to visual stimulation) or responded only to non-acoustic stimulations. In the A1 area, neurons responding to ECS with rather short latencies (15.6–17.0 msec) were found. ECS usually suppressed the impulse neuronal responses evoked by sound clicks. It is concluded that somatosensory afferent signals cause predominantly an inhibitory effect on transmission of an acoustic afferent volley to the auditory cortex at a subcortical level; however, rare cases of excitatory convergence of acoustic and somatosensory inputs toA1 neurons were observed.  相似文献

Motor activity and changes in body temperature related to the alternation of stages of an estrous cycle were studied in albino rats; groups of animals with the intact preoptic region (RPO), with electrolytically destroyedRPO, and with lesion of this structure followed by a transplantation of the embryonicRPO tissue were compared. The purpose of this study was to observe both the glycemic variability in abdominally obese men with normal glucose tolerance (NGT) and the relationship between glycemic variability and early atherosclerosis. This case‐control study included 23 abdominally obese men (waist circumference (WC) ≥90 cm) and 23 nonabdominally obese men (WC <90 cm) with NGT who were between 20 and 50 years of age. All subjects were of the Han ethnicity. The cases and controls were age‐matched. A continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) was used in this study. With the CGMS, the standard deviation of blood glucose (SDBG) and the mean amplitude of glucose excursion (MAGE) were calculated to estimate glycemic variability. The carotid intima‐media thickness (CIMT) was used as a surrogate marker of early atherosclerosis. Mean blood glucose (MBG) (6.13 ± 0.94 vs. 5.55 ± 0.87 mmol/l), SDBG (0.89 ± 0.34 vs. 0.64 ± 0.24 mmol/l), MAGE (2.05 ± 0.83 vs. 1.57 ± 0.52 mmol/l), and CIMT (0.73 ± 0.12 vs. 0.67 ± 0.05 mm) were significantly higher in the abdominally obese men than in the nonabdominally obese men (P < 0.05). WC positively correlated with MBG (r = 0.302, P = 0.041), SDBG (r = 0.362, P = 0.013), MAGE (r = 0.302, P = 0.041), and CIMT (r = 0.487, P = 0.001). CIMT did not correlate with MBG (r = 0.206, P = 0.169), SDBG (r = 0.114, P = 0.450), and MAGE (r = 0.085, P = 0.574). After multivariate analysis, WC was still significantly associated with MBG (β = 0.025, P = 0.041), SDBG (β = 0.010, P = 0.013), MAGE (β = 0.019, P = 0.042), and CIMT (β = 0.008, P = 0.022). This study demonstrates that glycemic variability is increased in abdominally obese men with NGT. A relationship between glycemic variability and atherosclerosis was not observed in this study and requires further investigation.  相似文献

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion(CSII) is an effective therapy to control hyperglycemia in both patients with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.However,there is little data investigating the insulin dose setting during CSII therapy in type 2 diabetes to achieve optimal glycemic control and avoid the risk of hypoglycemia.Thus,this study is aimed to assess the dose characteristics of insulin requirement and explore the related clinical factors in patients with type 2 diabetes who were treated with CSII.A total of 327 patients(195 males) aged 52.9±12.5 years old were included in this study.Patients were treated with CSII to achieve the target fasting capillary blood glucose(4.4-7.0 mmol L ~(-1)) and 2-h postprandial capillary blood glucose(4.4-10.0 mmol L ~(-1)) by adjusting insulin infusion according to the seven-point capillary blood glucose profiles.Total daily insulin dose(TDD),total daily insulin dose per kilogram(TDD kg-1) and the ratio of total basal insulin dose(TBD) to TDD(%TBa) were calculated after patients achieved the glucose targets for at least 3 days via 1-2 weeks of CSII treatment.And insulin dose,insulin dosing patterns and the relevant clinical factors were analyzed.The mean ratio of basal/bolus insulin distribution of all patients was 40%:60%.Patients with central obesity needed more TDD(51.3±17.1 U versus 43.5±14.0 U,P0.05) and TDD kg ~(-1)(0.8±0.3 U kg ~(-1) versus 0.7±0.2 U kg ~(-1),P0.05) than those without central obesity.Pearson's correlation analysis demonstrated that TDD was positively correlated with body mass index(BMI),waist circumference(WC),baseline fasting plasma glucose(FPG),fasting C-peptide level,2 h-postprandial C-peptide level and time to achieve glycemic target(all P0.05);TDD kg ~(-1) was positively correlated with waist-to-hip ratio(WHR),baseline FPG,glycosylated hemoglobin Ale(HbAlc),fasting C-peptide level and time to achieve glycemic target,and negatively correlated with BMI(all P0.05).Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that BMI(β=1.796,P0.01),WC(β=0.109,P0.01),baseline FPG(β=1.459,P0.01) and HbAlc(β=0.930,P=0.021) were independently related to TDD.Gender(β=-0.107,P=0.003),WC(β=0.005,P=0.029),baseline FPG(β=0.025,P0.01) and HbAlc(β=0.016,β=0.007) were independently associated with TDD kg ~(-1).Gender(β=-0.015,P=0.048) and disease duration(β=0.134,P=0.029) were independently associated with %TBa.%TBa is around 40% in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes treated with CSII when glycemic control is achieved.In addition to body weight or BMI,WC and glucose levels before CSII should be considered to set TDD.Patients with central obesity or poor glycemic control might need more TDD.Higher %TBa should be considered in female patients or patients with longer disease duration.  相似文献

Specific chromatin domains within interphase nuclei are organized in cell type specific distributions and are rearranged in association with changes in cell function. Axotomy leads to changes in gene expression. Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in vitro are a model for axotomy because they are detached from their axons in preparation for the culturing procedure. In a test of the hypothesis that neurons regrowing in vitro undergo rearrangement of specific chromatin domains, changes in the distribution of centromere-associated kinetochores proteins within DRG neurons were assessed as a function of time in vitro. Comparison of the kinetochore distributions in neurons in situ to those 24 h after placement into culture showed that the mean proportion (±S.E.M.) of kinetochore signals in the karyoplasm decreased from 41.0 ± 1.8% to 28.6 ± 3.3%, while the proportion at the nucleolus increased from 35.2 ± 2.0% to 48.4 ± 2.9%. This indicated redistribution of centromeric domains to the nucleolus. Between 1 day and 16 days in vitro, signals were redistributed to the nuclear periphery, indicated by an increase in the proportion of signals in this nuclear compartment from 23.0 ± 4.3% to 37.6 ± 3.4% and a decrease in the proportion of signals from 48.4 ± 2.9% to 23.0 ± 2.3% at the nucleolus. The results indicate that neurite regrowth following axotomy is associated with changes in nuclear topology. The reorganization that occurs within 24 h is speculated to be associated with a recapitulation of a cytoskeletal development program, while later changes in centromeric distributions may be related to cues elicited by in vitro conditions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that a low‐glycemic index (LGI) diet has a satiating effect and thus may enhance weight maintenance following weight loss. This study was conducted at Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK, and assessed the effect of altering diet GI on weight‐loss maintenance. It consisted of a weight‐loss phase and a 4‐month randomized weight maintenance phase. Subjects were seen monthly to assess dietary compliance and anthropometrics. Appetite was assessed bimonthly by visual analogue scales while meal challenge postprandial insulin and glucose concentrations were assessed before and after the intervention. Following a median weight loss of 6.1 (interquartile range: 5.2–7.1) % body weight, subjects were randomized to a high‐glycemic index (HGI) (n = 19) or LGI (n = 23) diet. Dietary composition differed only in GI (HGI group: 63.7 ± 9.4; LGI group: 49.7 ± 5.7, P < 0.001) and glycemic load (HGI group: 136.8 ± 56.3; LGI group: 89.7 ± 27.5, P < 0.001). Groups did not differ in body weight (weight change over 4 months, HGI group: 0.3 ± 1.9 kg; LGI group: −0.7 ± 2.9 kg, P = 0.3) or other anthropometric measurements. This pilot study suggests that in the setting of healthy eating, changing the diet GI does not appear to significantly affect weight maintenance.  相似文献

Responses of the neurons of the lateral and ventromedial hypothalamic regions (HL andHvm, respectively), as well as of the area of the dorsal hypothalamus (aHd) and the projection region of the medial forelimb bundle (MFB), evoked by stimulation of the proreal cortex (field 8), cingular cortex (field 24), pyriform lobula (periamigdalar cortex), and hippocampus (CA3) were studied in acute experiments on cats under ketamine anesthesia. Distributions of the latent periods of the responses recorded from hypothalamic neurons at stimulation of the above cortical structures were analyzed. The responses were classified into primary excitatory and primary inhibitory. Stimulation of the proreal gyrus evoked four times more excitatory responses than inhibitory responses. With stimulation of the cingular gyrus, the ratio of excitatory/inhibitory responses was 1.5∶1. Stimulation of the pyriform cortex evoked activatory and inhibitory responses with a similar probability. With hippocampal stimulation, inhibitory responses appeared two times more frequently than excitatory reactions. The hypothalamus was found to be a zone of wide convergence: one-half of all responding neurons in theHL andHvm responded to stimulations of two or more tested cortical zones. In 26% of the cells, only excitatory convergence was observed, while in 10% only inhibitory convergence was found; 21% of the cells revealed mixed convergence.  相似文献

Natural selection is known to produce convergent phenotypes through mimicry or ecological adaptation. It has also been proposed that social selection—i.e., selection exerted by social competition—may drive convergent evolution in signals mediating interspecific communication, yet this idea remains controversial. Here, we use color spectrophotometry, acoustic analyses, and playback experiments to assess the hypothesis of adaptive signal convergence in two competing nonsister taxa, Hypocnemis peruviana and H. subflava (Aves: Thamnophilidae). We show that the structure of territorial songs in males overlaps in sympatry, with some evidence of convergent character displacement. Conversely, nonterritorial vocal and visual signals in males are strikingly diagnostic, in line with 6.8% divergence in mtDNA sequences. The same pattern of variation applies to females. Finally, we show that songs in both sexes elicit strong territorial responses within and between species, whereas songs of a third, allopatric and more closely related species (H. striata) are structurally divergent and elicit weaker responses. Taken together, our results provide compelling evidence that social selection can act across species boundaries to drive convergent or parallel evolution in taxa competing for space and resources.  相似文献

Objective Angiotensin II (Ang II), through the Ang II type 2 receptor (AT2R), may play some roles in the pathogenesis of glucose metabolism and diabetes mellitus (DM). The Adenine/Cytosine 3123 (A/C3123) polymorphism in the AT2R gene has reportedly been associated with metabolic conditions such as blood pressure and body mass index (BMI). The present cross-sectional study was aimed at investigating the association between the AT2R gene A/C3123 polymorphism and glycemic control parameters. Methods Among 286 community-dwelling Japanese subjects (men: women = 126:160; mean age, 65.1 years), AT2R A/C3123 polymorphism, which was detected by polymerase chain reaction methods, and metabolic parameters such as blood pressure, BMI, lipoprotein/lipid, insulin, and glycemic control parameters (fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c) were examined. Results In the whole study population, the proportion of C-allele was 67.0% and A-allele was 33.0%. The A-allele carriers had significantly lower HbA1c levels than the C/C-genotyped subjects in the group of women (5.5 ± 0.6 vs. 5.8 ± 1.5%, P = 0.042). The effect on HbA1c persisted to be significant with adjustments to age and BMI. In men, the associations between the polymorphism and glycemic control parameters were non-significantly noted. There were no differences between genotype-based groups in the other metabolic parameters in both sexes. Conclusion These results suggest that the AT2R A/C3123 polymorphism could be a polymorphic marker related to glycemic control, as presented in HbA1c, among general Japanese women.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo evaluate the association between inpatient glycemic control and readmission in individuals with diabetes and hyperglycemia (DM/HG).MethodsTwo data sets were analyzed from fiscal years 2011 to 2013: hospital data using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes for DM/HG and point of care (POC) glucose monitoring. The variables analyzed included gender, age, mean, minimum and maximum glucose, along with 4 measures of glycemic variability (GV), standard deviation, coefficient of variation, mean amplitude of glucose excursions, and average daily risk range.ResultsOf 66 518 discharges in FY 2011-2013, 28.4% had DM/HG based on ICD-9 codes and 53% received POC monitoring. The overall readmission rate was 13.9%, although the rates for individuals with DM/HG were higher at 18.9% and 20.6% using ICD-9 codes and POC data, respectively. The readmitted group had higher mean glucose (169 ± 47 mg/dL vs 158 ± 46 mg/dL, P < .001). Individuals with severe hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia had the highest readmission rates. All 4 GV measures were consistent and higher in the readmitted group.ConclusionIndividuals with DM/HG have higher 30-day readmission rates than those without. Those readmitted had higher mean glucose, more extreme glucose values, and higher GV. To our knowledge, this is the first report of multiple metrics of inpatient glycemic control, including GV, and their associations with readmission.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the effectiveness of an Inpatient Diabetes Management Program (IDMP) on physician knowledge and inpatient glycemic control.MethodsResidents assigned to General Internal Medicine inpatient services were randomized to receive the IDMP (IDMP group) or usual education only (nonIDMP group). Both groups received an overview of inpatient diabetes management in conjunction with reminders of existing order sets on the hospital Web site. The IDMP group received print copies of the program and access to an electronic version for a personal digital assistant (PDA). A Diabetes Knowledge Test (DKT) was administered at baseline and at the end of the 1-month rotation. The frequency of hyperglycemia among patients under surveillance by each group was compared by using capillary blood glucose values and a dispersion index of glycemic variability. IDMP users completed a questionnaire related to the program.ResultsTwenty-two residents participated (11 in the IDMP group and 11 in the non-IDMP group). Overall Diabetes Knowledge Test scores improved in both groups (IDMP: 69% ± 1.7% versus 83% ± 2.1%, P = .003; nonIDMP: 76% ± 1.2% versus 84% ± 1.4%, P = .02). The percentage of correct responses for management of corticosteroid-associated hyperglycemia (P = .004) and preoperative glycemic management (P = .006) improved in only the IDMP group. The frequency of hyperglycemia (blood glucose level > 180 mg/dL) and the dispersion index (5.3 ± 7.6 versus 3.7 ± 5.6; P = .2) were similar between the 2 groups.ConclusionAn IDMP was effective at improving physician knowledge for managing hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients treated with corticosteroids or in preparation for surgical procedures. Educational programs directed at improving overall health care provider knowledge for inpatient glycemic management may be beneficial; however, improvements in knowledge do not necessarily result in improved glycemic outcomes. Among obesity‐prone individuals, metabolic state may interact with diet in determining body composition. We tested the hypotheses that, among 103 weight‐reduced women over 1 year, (i) insulin sensitivity would be positively associated with change in %fat; (ii) this association would be modulated by dietary glycemic load (GL); and (iii) changes in fat distribution would be related to indexes of glucose metabolism. Insulin sensitivity, glucose effectiveness, fasting and postchallenge insulin and glucose, and glucose tolerance were assessed during intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). Changes in %fat and fat distribution were examined using dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry and computed tomography. Dietary GL was assessed on 67 women using food records. On average, women showed a +5.3 ± 3.0% change in %fat over 1 year, with the magnitude of this change being greater in relatively insulin sensitive women (+6.0 ± 0.4%, mean ± s.e.m.) than in relatively insulin resistant women (+4.4 ± 0.4 kg; P < 0.05). Women who were relatively insulin sensitive and who consumed a higher GL diet showed a +6.8 ± 0.7% change in %fat, which was greater than those who were less insulin sensitive, regardless of diet (P < 0.05), but did not differ from women who were relatively insulin sensitive and who consumed a lower GL diet (P = 0.105). Changes in intra‐abdominal and deep subcutaneous abdominal fat were inversely associated with the postchallenge decline in serum glucose. In conclusion, greater insulin sensitivity may predispose to adiposity among weight reduced women, an effect that may be ameliorated by a lower GL diet. The potential association between indexes of glucose disposal and changes in fat distribution warrants further study.  相似文献

Objective: Studies suggest that high‐dairy and high‐fiber/low‐glycemic index diets may facilitate weight loss, but data are conflicting. The effects on weight loss and body fat of a high‐dairy diet and a diet high in dairy and fiber and low in glycemic index were compared with a standard diet. Research Methods and Procedures: Ninety obese subjects were recruited into a randomized trial of three diets designed to provide a calorie deficit of 500 calories/d over a 48‐week period. The study compared a moderate (not low)‐calcium diet with a high‐calcium diet. Results: Seventy‐two subjects completed the study. Significant weight and fat loss occurred with all three diets. A diet with 1400 mg of calcium did not result in greater weight (11.8 ± 6.1 kg) or fat (9.0 ± 6.0 kg) loss than a diet with 800 mg of calcium (10.0 ± 6.8 and 7.5 ± 6.6 kg, respectively). A diet with 1400 mg of calcium, increased fiber content, and fewer high‐glycemic index foods did not result in greater weight (10.6 ± 6.8 kg) or fat (8.5 ± 7.8 kg) loss than the standard diet with 800 mg of calcium. Lipid profile, high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein, leptin, fasting glucose, and insulin improved significantly, but there were no significant differences between the experimental diets and the control diet. Discussion: We found no evidence that diets higher than 800 mg of calcium in dairy products or higher in fiber and lower in glycemic index enhance weight reduction beyond what is seen with calorie restriction alone.  相似文献

Objective: To compare the effects of two calorie-restricted diets that differ in glycemic load (GL) on glucose tolerance and inflammation. Research Methods and Procedures: Thirty-four healthy overweight adults, ages 24 to 42 years, were randomized to 30% provided calorie-restricted diets with high (HG) or low (LG) glycemic load for 6 months. Outcomes were changes in glucose-insulin dynamics and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Results: Compared with baseline, levels of fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, post-load insulin at 30 minutes, and incremental area-under-the-curve-insulin during the oral glucose tolerance test were significantly lower in both groups at 6 months (p range, 0.01 to 0.05), but after adjustment for baseline values and weight change, there were no differences between the two groups with regard to changes over time in any parameter. The mean percentage change in insulin sensitivity by a frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test was +26% in the HG group and +24% in the LG group (p = 0.83); first-phase acute insulin release was −20% in the HG group and −21% in the LG group (p = 0.77). More participants on the LG diet (14 of 16 subjects) had a decline in serum CRP, compared with those on the HG diet (7 of 16 subjects) (p < 0.05). Discussion: In healthy overweight adults provided with food for 6 months, the dietary GL did not seem to influence chronic adaptations in glucose-insulin dynamics above that associated with weight loss. The Wistar Diabetic Fatty rat (WDF fafa) is a con-genic strain of the Wistar Kyoto rat. Studies using blood glucose reveal that only fatty male (not female) WDF rats spontaneously develop hyperglycemia when fed a stock diet Blood glucose values have not provided consistent results for evaluation of glycemic status in fatty male WDF rats. Zucker fatty (fafa) rats, while sharing the fa gene and the development of hyperinsulinemia and hyperlipemia, do not spontaneously become hyperglycemic. In order to examine strain differences and the effects of age on long-term average glycemic status in WDF and Zucker rats, glycated hemoglobin (GHb) was analyzed. Glycated hemoglobin was measured in male lean and obese WDF and Zucker rats at 2,3,6, and 12 months of age. Nonfasted plasma glucose was measured in male lean and obese WDF rats at 2, 3, 6, and 12 months of age and in lean and obese Zucker rats at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Plasma insulin was measured in lean and obese WDF and Zucker rats at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Obese WDF rats had significantly elevated GHb compared to lean controls at 3, 6, and 12 months of age. Glycated hemoglobin was substantially above the normal range (3.8-6.5%) at 3 months of age (14.1%). Glycated hemoglobin significantly declined in the obese WDF rats between 6 and 12 months of age. Nonfasted plasma glucose was significantly elevated in the obese WDF rats at 3 months (14.1 ± 2.1 mM/L) and 6 months of age (16.2 ± 2.3 mM/L) compared to lean controls. At 12 months of age there was no difference in plasma glucose between obese and lean WDF rats. Obese and lean Zucker rats had similar levels of GHb and plasma glucose at all ages. In conclusion, GHb provides more integrated data for classifying disease status of WDF rats and evaluation of potential long-term complications associated with hyperglycemia.  相似文献

Summary Single neuron responses to sinusoidally amplitude modulated (SAM) signals were studied in the inferior colliculus of the horseshoe bat,Rhinolophus rouxi.57% of the neurons responded to SAM stimuli with periodical discharges synchronized to the modulation cycle. The proportion of cells driven by amplitude modulated signals was independent of the best frequency of the neurons. Best modulation frequencies were at or below 100 Hz in about 70% of the neurons. Synchronized activity could be elicited by modulation frequencies up to 400 Hz.Best SAM responses were observed at stimulus intensities 10 dB above threshold. Generally the BMF of a neuron did not change with intensity. The BMF decreased with decreasing modulation depth of the amplitude modulation.A trend for a topographical organization of neurons according to best modulation frequencies was detected. Objective: To assess the effects of negative energy balance on the metabolic response of a meal containing either glucose or fructose as the primary source of carbohydrate after exercise in obese individuals in energy balance, or negative energy balance. Research Methods and Procedures: Fourteen adults with mean body mass index (BMI) 30.3 ± 1 kg/m2, age 26 ± 2 years, and weight 93.5 ± 5.4 kg, adhered to an energy‐balanced (EB) or a negative energy‐balanced (NEB) diet for 6 days. On Day 7, subjects exercised at 70% VO2peak for 40 minutes then consumed either high glucose (50 g of glucose, HG) or high fructose (50 g of fructose, HF) liquid meal. Substrate utilization was measured by indirect calorimetry for 3 hours. Blood samples were collected before exercise and 0, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes after consuming the meal. Results: The HG produced 15.9% greater glycemic (p < 0.05) and 30.9% larger insulinemic (p < 0.05) responses than the HF under both EB and NEB conditions. After the NEB diet, carbohydrate and fat oxidation did not differ for HG and HF. In contrast, carbohydrate oxidation increased 31%, and fat oxidation decreased 39% with HF compared with HG after the EB diet. Thus, HF and HG consumed after exercise produced marked differences in macronutrient oxidation when obese subjects followed an EB diet, but no difference when adhering to a NEB diet. Discussion: The data suggest that the use of fructose in supplements/meals may provide no additional benefit in terms of substrate utilization during a weight loss program involving diet and exercise.  相似文献
