Moina weismanni Ishikawa is reported from Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. The species was formerly synonymized with Moina micrura Kurz, based on parthenogenotic females. In both species, parthenogenetic females have a characteristic postabdomen, antennules (characters formerly regarded as typical for a variety of M. micrura), and ephippium. Wales are quite different. Examined populations of both species are similar in length-to-width ratio. M. weismanni is typical for small, eutrophic but permanent, and for large temporary water bodies. M. micrura is restricted to the plankton.  相似文献

A biological ricefield in northern Italy, without periodic dry spells in its growing cycle and therefore more familiar to naturally humid zones, was studied for its heleoplankton community. The biocoenosis reached a greater level of complexity than reported in literature. In particular, the seasonal succession of Cladocerans, the dominant group throughout the study period, was analyzed. Wlassicsia pannonica (Daday, 1904; Anomopoda Macrothricidae), is new to Italy; its morphology is compared to that of other populations of the same species and its biological cycle is compared with that of other dominant Cladocerans.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate Microcystis as food for zooplankton in Lake Kasumigaura, and the following results were obtained. (1) Moina micrura (Cladocera) showed little growth and no reproduction when the animal was reared with Microcystis cultured in the laboratory. The animal did not grow nor reproduce well when Chlorella was mixed with Microcystis as food. (2) Moina micrura assimilated Microcystis much less than Chlorella when the animal fed on single species of Microcystis or a mixture with Chlorella. (3) Microcystis collected from Lake Kasumigaura could not be utilized by Moina micrura even though the colonies were broken up into edible sizes. However, the alga turned into utilizable food when it was decomposed. (4) No inhibitors of Moina micrura population growth could be found in the non-filtered water of Lake Kasumigaura where Microcystis was blooming heavily. Decomposed Microcystis seemed to be utilized by zooplankton as an important food source in Lake Kasumigaura.  相似文献

Laboratory observations on the egg production, development and growth in the Cladoceran Moina micrura show that this species has a life span of 13 days during which it produces 6M 8 eggs. Two preadult and eleven adult instars were recorded at a temperature range of 28°–30°C. The rate of egg production calculated on a cumulative basis was found to be lower (a = 1.0368) than that of other tropical species. The embryonic stages in Moina micrura closely resembled other cladoceran species, although with a short development period of 24 h. The total life span, growth rate and the total number of eggs produced in Moina micrura have been compared with those of allied tropical, temperate and arctic daphnids. The significance of this relationship to secondary productivity in tropical ecosystems has been discussed.  相似文献

Abstract In this work we report on the seasonal trends of abundances in terms of temperature exposure for four coexisting cladoceran species (Daphnia ambigua (Daphniidae), Ceriodaphnia dubia (Daphniidae), Diaphanosoma chilense (Sididae) and Moina micrura (Moinidae)) from a Chilean temperate lake. In order to compare the demographic response to temperature, we used life table experiments to parameterize matrix models for the four species at four fixed temperatures. From these life table response experiments we assessed the effects of temperature, species and their interaction on the variation in growth rate, as well as the contribution of juvenile survival, adult survival, fertility and age at first reproduction to the changes in growth rate. Our results showed interspecific differences in the effect of temperature on the growth rate. Species that present higher field abundance at lower temperature also exhibited, under controlled experiments, higher growth rates at low temperature and lower growth rates at high temperature, relative to the additive model. Conversely, species with higher abundances during the warmer seasons exhibited higher growth rates at higher experimental temperatures and lower growth rates at lower temperatures, relative to the additive model. The vital rates that most contributed to the variation in growth rate were age at first reproduction and fertility. Our growth rate estimates matched predictions of the metabolic ecology model.  相似文献

The zooplankton of freshwater systems has been recognized as an important energy resource for fish of small body size that, in turn, provide energy to piscivorous fish consumers higher up the food web. This study evaluates the importance of zooplankton to the diets of three species of fish living in floodplain waterholes of an Australian dryland river. The species selected for study represent different trophic categories in waterhole food webs: Ambassis agassizii is a microcarnivore, Leiopotherapon unicolor is an omnivore, and Nematalosa erebi is a detritivore. Dietary differences among size classes of each species were also evaluated to understand possible ontogenetic shifts in zooplankton consumption. Ambassis agassizii fed primarily on zooplankton (99.9%, made up mostly of 81.6% Calanoida and 17.4% Moinidae), regardless of the size of individual fish. Leiopotherapon unicolor fed on zooplankton (47%, mostly Daphniidae and Moinidae) and aquatic insects (46.7%). Smaller individuals of Leiopotherapon unicolor (30–49 mm TL—total length) were responsible for 36.1% of the plankton consumed by the species. Nematalosa erebi fed on detritus (84.6%) with zooplankton (Calanoida, Moinidae, and Cyclopoida) contributing only 13.7% of the mean diet. Smaller individuals (40–69 mm TL) were responsible for 98% of the plankton consumed by Nematalosa erebi, and individuals of 40–49 mm (TL) fed exclusively on zooplankton (53.8% Moinidae and 46.2% Calanoida). Although the three fish species had different diets, reflecting differences in species-specific and ontogenetic morphological and behavioral characteristics, zooplankton formed the basis of the diet of all species when young. These results confirm the importance of zooplankton as a major food resource for three fish species and smaller size classes of these species in floodplain waterholes of the Macintyre River, Australia. The cladocerans Ceriodaphnia richardi, Daphnia ambigua, D. gessneri and Moina micrura were used to access food quality of Lake Monte Alegre’s seston. Experiments were carried out in summer and autumn as growth assays with lake seston only (control) and seston supplemented with phosphate, fatty acids or Synechococcus, and Scenedesmus. In summer, high C:P ratios in seston suggested strong phosphorus limitation, however, contrary to the expectations of stoichiometric theory, the addition of phosphate to seston did not improve cladoceran growth. Addition of PUFA increased growth rates and clutch size of D. gessneri, suggesting a possible deficiency in essential fatty acids in summer. Addition of Scenedesmus increased significantly growth rates of the cladocerans D. gessneri and C. cornuta, suggesting energy limitation in summer. In autumn, C:P ratios were lower than in summer, but still above the threshold ratio for Daphnia. At this time, addition of phosphate increased significantly growth rates of Daphnia suggesting strong P limitation, especially in D. gessneri. However, energy limitation was still important in autumn, as suggested by a further increase in growth rates in +Syn and +Sce treatments. Energy limitation was especially strong for Moina micrura, which is a fast-growing species, with high P content. Algal digestion resistance is a plausible hypothesis for energy limitation, since carbon concentrations in both seasons were above incipient limiting levels. These results show that the seston C:P ratio was not a consistent predictor of cladoceran P limitation and that factors other than P and energy limitation seem to be also important, such as PUFA or other biochemical factors. Although oligochaete worms naturally coexist with cladocerans in many shallow freshwater ponds and lakes, their influence on the latter is not well established. In this work we studied the effect of Aeolosoma sp. on the population growth of Alona rectangula, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia pulex, Macrothrix triserialis and Moina macrocopa. Population growth studies were conducted at one algal food density (1 × 106cells ml–1 of Chlorella vulgaris). The experimental design was similar for all five cladoceran species, where we used 100 ml capacity transparent jars containing 50 ml of EPA medium with the desired algal density and three replicates for each treatment. The test medium was changed daily and fresh algal food was added. The initial density of each of the cladoceran species in the population growth studies was 0.4 ind ml–1 while that of the worms 1.0 ind ml–1. Following inoculation, we estimated daily the number of cladocerans and the worms for duration of 21 days. Regardless of the presence of worms, Moina macrocopa and Macrothrix triserialis showed rapid population growth while A. rectangula took more than 2 weeks to reach peak abundances. With the exception of M. triserialis, all the other our cladoceran species declined in the presence of Aeolosoma sp. The lowest peak population density (about 1 ind ml–1) was observed for M. triserialisin controls. The remaining species had peak densities of about 3–5 ind ml–1. The rates of population increase per day varied from 0.03 to 0.19 depending on the cladoceran taxa and the treatment. In general we found that pelagic taxa were more adversely affected by the presence of the worms than were the littoral cladocerans.  相似文献

With a view to converting human urine into bio-wealth in the form of zooplankton, the nutrient potentials of liquid wastes (0.11 mL L−1)—(i) human urine (♂), (ii) cow urine, (iii) human–cow mixed urine or some solid wastes (0.11 g L−1): (iv) vermi-compost, (v) cow dung, (vi) poultry droppings and (vii) mixed wastes (vermi-cow-poultry)—were evaluated for the mass culture of zooplankton Moina micrura in 24 outdoor tanks (4500 L) in triplicate treatments using life table as indicator during the period of October–December, 2005. Neonates of Moina micrura held in the treatment with human urine started reproduction at least 4 days earlier than other solid wastes tested. Total number of Moina micrura enumerated in the culture tank, related with offspring production per life span, was maximum in case of human urine treatment, followed by human–cow mixed urine, cow urine, vermin-compost, poultry droppings, mixed wastes (vermin–cow–poultry), cow dung and control treatments. The relationship between the total offspring production per female per life span and the nitrogen content of water in different treatments implied that human urine was an excellent liquid waste that can be used for the mass production of zooplankton Moina micrura required for larval and post larval rearing of commercial fishes.  相似文献

In 1981 the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Biological Control of Weeds Laboratory (BCWL, Rome, Italy) started investigating the host specificity ofP. inspersa as a candidate for biological control ofC. diffusa andC. maculosa, and in 1985 the investigation was completed at the USDA Biological Control of Weeds Laboratory at Albany, California. Thirty five species of plants in the familyAsteraceae and 23 other species in 8 related families were tested. Larval survival beyond 1st instar occurred only onCentaurea spp. except for 1 larva found inCnicus benedictus L.P. inspersa is stenophagous onCentaurea, therefore, a good candidate for introduction into North America.   相似文献

The presumed sixth limb of Dumontia Santos-Flores & Dodson, 2003 is shown to correspond to the inner part of the fifth limb. Comparison of the latter structure within the order increases the similarity between the Dumontiidae and the Daphniidae (plus Moinidae), but important similarities with the Radopoda remain. The relationship between a ‘‘daphniid line’’ and radopods needs further attention. Handling editor: K. Martens  相似文献

The ricefield eel (Monopterus albus Zuiew), a burrowing eel-like synbranchoid teleost, undergoes a natural sex change from female to male during its life history. Since the teleost pineal gland and its melatoninergic output have been suggested as regulators in seasonal reproduction and sexual maturation in many fish species, it is reasonable to postulate that melatonin may play important roles in the ricefield eel’s sex-change process. This hypothesis was tested by examining secretional characteristics and reproductive effects of melatonin in the ricefield eel. Results indicate that serum melatonin (mainly secreted from the pineal complex, retinae and gastrointestinal tract) is involved in sex change of this species. It seems that, within a reproductive cycle, relatively lower mid-night serum melatonin (MNSM) levels are necessary for natural spawning, but relatively higher MNSM levels after spawning permit initiation of the sex-change process. A putative model is presented to clarify the involvement of melatonin in natural sex change of the ricefield eel, although the precise mechanisms are still under further investigation.  相似文献

Mediterranean red-legged (Alectoris rufa) and rock (Alectoris graeca) partridge populations are affected by genetic pollution. The chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), a species only partly native to Europe, is the most frequently introgressive taxon detected in the genome of hybrid partridges. Both theoretical (evolutionary) and practical (resources management) matters spur to get insight into the geographic origin of the A. chukar hybridizing swarm. The phenotypic A. rufa populations colonizing the easternmost part of the distribution range of this species, the islands of Elba (Italy) and Corsica (France), were investigated. The analysis of both mitochondrial (mtDNA: Cytochrome-b gene plus Control Region: 2,250 characters) and nuclear (Short Tandem Repeats, STR; Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA, RAPD) genomes of 25 wild (Elba) and 20 captive (Corsica) partridges, disclosed spread introgression of chukar origin also in these populations. All mtDNA haplotypes of Elba and Corsica partridges along with those we obtained from other A. rufa (total, = 111: Italy, Spain, France) and A. graeca (= 6, Italy), were compared with the mtDNA haplotypes of chukars (= 205) sampled in 20 countries. It was found that the A. chukar genes detected in red-legged (= 43) and rock partridges (= 4) of Spain, France and Italy as well as in either introduced (Italy) or native (Greece, Turkey) chukars (= 35) were all from East Asia. Hence, a well-defined geographic origin of the exotic chukar genes polluting the genome of native Mediterranean A. rufa and A. graeca (inter-specific level) as well as A. chukar (intra-specific level), was demonstrated.  相似文献

Publications in Russian on the influence of epibiontic rotifers on cladocerans as well as on predator-prey interrelations between cladocerans and rotifers are reviewed. Proales daphnicola and Brachionus rubens are common epibionts of Cladocera. The biology of these species is described including the choice of host, feeding, reproduction and impact on the host. Representatives of the families Daphniidae and Moinidae are most readily colonized. At high densities of epibiontic rotifers, a high percentage of young Cladocera die. Predators consuming cladocerans (mainly Bosminidae) belong to the family Asplanchnidae. Rotifers are consumed by the predatory cladocerans Leptodora and Polyphemus. The results of functional response experiments by the author with P. pediculus feeding on Synchaeta pectinata, Asplanchna priodonta, colonial and solitary Conochilus unicornis, and Platyias patulus are given. In the range of prey densities of 100–1600 1–1 a functional response was found in all the rotifers except P. patulus. Colonies of C. unicornis were not consumed. The highest level of feeding rate saturation was observed in Synchaeta pectinata. Various adaptations in prey morphology prevented effective predation: coloniality, large size of the prey and hard lorica with spines.  相似文献

The Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris suffered declines in western Europe during the 20th century, partly because of wetland reclamation. The species has been traditionally considered a reedbed specialist but recent studies identified a greater ecological plasticity than previously believed. We investigated habitat associations of a Eurasian Bittern population that has started to breed in the ricefields of northwest Italy since the early 1990s. Booming Bitterns had a higher probability of occurring in ricefields with taller rice plants, more vegetated field banks, more weeds, a larger surface and closer to remaining natural wetlands. The positive effect of field bank vegetation height on the probability that a ricefield hosted a booming Bittern declined late in the season, in contrast to the effects of weeds and ricefield area, which were stronger later in the season. A decreasing importance of vegetation on field banks to booming Bitterns may be a consequence of seasonal changes in habitat structure through the Bittern’s breeding period. The degree of flooding did not affect the probability of occurrence of booming Bitterns, probably because most ricefields were homogeneously flooded during the peak breeding season (June–July). Our findings have important implications for the management of Bittern populations breeding in the ricefields of northwest Italy. We propose simple conservation actions that may favour the occurrence of booming Bitterns and help the species spread in this novel habitat.  相似文献

Three micro algae, Ankistrodesmus convolutus, Scenedesmus incrassatulus and Chlorella vulgaris, at three concentrations, were tested as diets for Moina macrocopa. Their effect on reproduction, fecundity, growth and survival was evaluated. All three algae satisfied the nutritional requirements of M. macrocopa, despite their difference in size. The best concentration, expressed in dry weight, was 5 mg l–1 for all three. Time to first reproduction was 4 days with all diets. Average time between clutches was 33 hours, and maximum number of clutches was 12; the highest average number of offspring per brood was 27. The largest broods were the fourth to sixth, depending on the diet. Ephippium hatching depends on temperature, taking only 24 hours at 30 °C and 48 hours at 27 °C. This species could be an important test organism in aquatic bioassays, and a live food in aquaculture.  相似文献

The seasonal succession of cladocerans was studied in an experimental ricefield (never treated with biocides) located on the Po River Plain (Province of Reggio Emilia) in 1982, the first year of rice cultivation, and in two later years, 1984 and 1986. A total of 26 species were identified; some of them were found in Northern Italy for the first time. The finding of Latonopsis australis Sars is discussed in detail. A trend of increasing specific diversity during the rice cultivation season was not recurrent every year. The most significant trends emerge when the three years are compared. The total number of species was 14 in 1982, 16 in 1984, and 20 in 1986. Diversity, too, increased strongly over the years: this trend was sustained chiefly by the increase in richness of Chydoridae species associated with the growth and decomposition of a large biomass of weeds and microalgae during the summer.  相似文献

Species composition, abundance, and spatial distribution of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were studied in Lake Ziway from late April to early July 2004. A total of 49 rotifer species was recorded, with Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus angularis, Filinia novaezealandiae, and Trichocerca ruttneri being numerically dominant. Variation in abundance was extremely high, ranging from 2 to 1000+ individuals per litre. There was no significant difference in the distribution of rotifer species between inshore and offshore regions. Crustacean species richness was low, with only five cladoceran and three copepod species occurring in the open water. Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma excisum dominated the cladoceran community, whereas Thermocyclops decipiens was the dominant copepod. Although numerically dominant (75%), rotifers accounted for less than 30% of mean total zooplankton biomass. Peak abundance of crustaceans was observed in May and June, following the onset of the rainy season and increased phytoplankton production. Variation in the spatial distribution of crustacean species was neither observed horizontally between inshore and offshore areas nor vertically in the highly turbid and wind exposed deeper part of the lake. On the other hand, Moina micrura varied significantly in size between inshore and offshore areas. Adult M. micrura dominated offshore, whereas juveniles were more abundant inshore, suggesting a predominantly littoral selective predation on large and adult crustaceans by fish. Classical biological control is generallyunderstood as an environmentally safe practiceof insect pest management. However, questionshave been raised about possible negativeeffects for native species. As part of a riskassessment study a semi-field trial was carriedout in northern Italy in order to compare theoverwintering of the native species Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) and Adalia bipunctata (L.) (Coleoptera:Coccinellidae) with the exotic Harmoniaaxyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). All the experiments were carried out from April1998 to April 2001. Harmonia axyridis wasable to overwinter successfully in northernItaly. Fecundity, oviposition rate, longevityand rate of increase of overwintering femaleswere calculated and the phenology of the threespecies was studied. Harmonia axyridisoverwintering mortality (31.9%) was lower incomparison with mortality of native species(68.9% for P. quatuordecimpunctata and61.3% for A. bipunctata). As aconsequence, post-overwintering rate ofincrease of the exotic species was higher.Longevity of overwintered females was similaramong the species. Mean fecundity of H. axyridis (783.8 eggs per female) was slightlyhigher than A. bipunctata (720.2 eggs perfemale), and much higher than P. quatuordecimpunctata (193.7 eggs per female). H. axyridis and A. bipunctatacompleted four generations and P. quatuordecimpunctata three generations in a year. The results show that H. axyridisappears to posses a high potential for establishment in Italy.  相似文献
