Virgin German cockroach females, Blattella germanica(L.), were observed, for the first time, to exhibit a characteristic calling behavior during which females emit a volatile sex pheromone. Under a photoperiod of 12L12D, the percentage of 7-day-old virgin females that exhibited this behavior peaked before the end of the scotophase in a similar pattern to the diel periodicity of mating. A clear relationship was evident between calling and stages of sexual receptivity during successive gonotrophic cycles. Females initiated calling 5–6 days after the imaginal molt, when their basal oocytes were 1.6 mm long. If not mated, females continued to exhibit bouts of calling during the next 3–4 days until 24 h before ovulation. Calling was completely suppressed by mating as well as the presence of an egg case in the genital atrium in both virgin and mated gravid females. We suggest that calling and the emission of a volatile sex pheromone serve to attract males from a distance as well as to potentiate responses to contact sex pheromone in aggregations.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the development of immature stages of the predator Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans, produced by either fertilized or virgin females, was studied at 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5, and 35°C, 80 ± 5% relative humidity, in complete darkness, and fed Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank). The population maintained at 15°C failed to reproduce. The thermal data obtained were used for the estimation of the thermal requirements (developmental thresholds, thermal constant, optimum temperature) of this predator by a linear and nonlinear model (Logan type I model). Upper and lower developmental thresholds ranged between 37.4–37.8 and 11.6–12.0°C, respectively. Optimum temperature for development was estimated at between 33.1 and 33.5°C. The thermal constant ranged between 238.1 and 312.5 degree-days. Based on the data of the total pre-imaginal period, immatures’ survival peaked at 25°C. Arrhenotokous parthenogenesis (haplodiploidy) is confirmed in the species: virgin females always produce males, whereas fertilized females give rise to offspring of both sexes. Survival of the immature stages and offspring sex ratio were not significantly influenced by temperature.  相似文献

The oriental beetle, Anomala orientalis (Waterhouse) (Col., Scarabaeidae), is the most important root‐feeding pest of blueberries and turfgrass in New Jersey, USA. Previous studies showed that mating disruption is a feasible option for oriental beetle management; however, assessing its efficiency can be challenging, and little is known on its long‐term effects. Accordingly, we conducted studies to investigate low‐dose pheromone lures equivalent to oriental beetle females (i.e. female mimics) as easy‐to‐use indicators of mating disruption success, determine the distance at which oriental beetle males respond to female‐mimic lures and assess the long‐term (3‐year) effects of mating disruption on oriental beetle populations in entire blueberry fields. Our studies showed that rubber septa baited with 0.3 μg of the oriental beetle sex pheromone (Z)‐7‐tetradecen‐2‐one attract similar numbers of males as compared with virgin females and can thus be used as a female mimic. The range of attraction of this lure was found to be also similar to virgin females and <30 m. In blueberries, mating disruption provided 87% inhibition of oriental beetle populations (trap shutdown) over a 3‐year period. Oriental beetle male captures in disrupted fields were threefold higher along the field edges than in the field interiors, indicating movement of males from nearby areas into the pheromone‐treated fields. In addition, mating disruption reduced male attraction to female‐mimic lures by 93% in all 3 years and reduced the number of larvae in sentinel potted plants in 1 of 2 years. These results show for the first time that mating disruption provides consistent long‐term field‐wide control of oriental beetle populations and that female‐mimic pheromone lures can be used as a new tool to assess oriental beetle mating disruption success.  相似文献

The zone of emission of the sex pheromone from the body of Culicoides nubeculosus was investigated. The amount of pheromone emitted was evaluated by counting the number of matings between males and females exposed to a flow of air coming from a chamber containing virgin females. The number of matings is higher than that recorded when the air flow comes from an empty chamber (control). Three parts of the body were examined: head, thorax and abdomen. Each part was studied by neutralizing the effect of the others. The head was neutralized by decapitation and the females continued to emit pheromone. The head is, therefore, not indispensible for pheromone emission. The roles of the thorax and abdomen were studied by coating these with paraffin wax. When the thorax is coated, pheromone emission continues, but when the abdomen is coated, it stops. It appears that the abdomen alone is responsible for emission of the sex pheromone.  相似文献

Reproduction, survival, and life table parameters of the predatory mite Cheyletus malaccensis Oudemans were evaluated at six constant temperatures: 17.5, 20, 25, 30, 32.5 and 35°C, feeding on Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank). Preoviposition period of fertilized and virgin females varied with temperature from ca. 9 days at 17.5°C to ca. 1.5 day at 32.5°C and then increased to ca. 3 days at 35°C. Virgin female oviposition period was significantly shorter than for fertilized females at the temperatures examined with the exception of 17.5°C. The mean total number of eggs per fertilized (169.7 ± 6.6) and virgin female (60.7 ± 4.3) was highest at the temperature of 30°C. The data indicated a significant positive and nearly doubling effect of fertilization on female fecundity at the temperatures examined with the exception of 17.5°C. Age-specific fecundity was described by a temperature dependent model from which the maximum daily fecundity rate was estimated for fertilized and virgin females at 10.3 (at 30°C) and 6.8 (at 32.5°C) eggs/female, respectively. Virgin female longevity was significantly shorter than for fertilized females at 20, 30 and 32.5°C, and decreased from ca. 57 days at 17.5°C to ca. 17 days at 35°C. The Weibull function that was used to describe the age specific survival of fertilized and virgin females produced excellent fits to the survival data. Estimates of intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate, mean generation time, doubling time and finite rate of increase, were obtained. The rm value increased with temperature from 0.03 (day−1) at 17.5°C to 0.21 (day−1) at 32.5°C, after which it decreased to 0.15 (day−1) at 35°C. These data indicate that C. malaccensis can reproduce at temperatures between 17.5 and 35°C and can be used for biological control of astigmatid mites within the temperature range where the pest occurs.  相似文献

Changes in the signaling effort of virgin females are known to occur until their first mating. Young females tend to increase the calling effort (number and time duration of bouts) as they age. In this context, the calling behavior of virgin females of Atheloca subrufella, an important pest of coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), was studied under laboratory conditions. Thirty four virgin females were observed during 16 scotophases (25 ± 2 °C, 75 ± 5 % RH and 10 h scotophase), until they stopped calling in the following photophase. The calling position, pattern and frequency were evaluated. Females of A. subrufella showed only one calling position, and calling peaked between the second and fifth scotophases. Most females did not start calling immediately after emergence. Neither the individual duration of calling nor the number of calling bouts changed over time. However, the time that calling started was earlier in older females, probably to avoid competition with younger females and increase the probability of mating. These data support the hypothesis that there is an age-dependent pattern of pheromone emission in virgin females of A. subrufella.  相似文献

Finding mates is frequently problematic for parasitoid wasps. In some parasitoid species, males rely on volatile, airborne sex pheromones for locating mates, while in others they rely on contact, trail sex pheromones. This study sought to shed light on the mate finding mechanism of males of Aphytis melinus. Specifically, the goal was to determine whether A. melinus males use airborne or contact pheromones, or both, for locating mates. The study showed that A. melinus males rely on a contact, trail sex pheromone for locating mates: A. melinus males responded to substrate-borne cues left by virgin females, while they did not respond to airborne cues from virgin females. Specifically, males more frequently encountered virgin females when the females walked across an arena to a fixed encounter point compared to when they were manually placed at the encounter point, and spent greater than expected time on surfaces previously visited by virgin females compared to control surfaces not visited by females. In contrast, males did not respond to airborne cues from virgin females in an airflow olfactometer nor to traps baited with virgin females in the field, and spent similar lengths of time on surfaces visited by newly-mated or 24-h mated females versus control surfaces not visited by females. The main effect of the trail sex pheromone on the behavior of A. melinus males was to direct their search and, so, increase the likelihood of encountering mates. This effect apparently is not preceded by longer-range attraction of males via an airborne female sex pheromone. Overall, the results of this study support a hypothesis in which A. melinus males searching on substrates on which females may be present rely exclusively on a trail sex pheromone to locate mates.  相似文献

The potential for short‐range sex pheromone communication by the egg parasitoid wasp Trissolcus brochymenae (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) was investigated in closed arena bioassays. Males of this parasitoid showed more antennal drumming and more frequent mounting behaviour on 1‐ to 2‐d‐old virgin females compared with 8‐d‐old virgin females. Male copulation attempts were fewer with previously mated females than with virgin females. Males courted and made copulation attempts with 1‐ to 2‐d‐old female cadavers, but not with male cadavers or with female cadavers rinsed in organic solvents of different polarities. Male attraction to female cadavers was re‐established by treating cadavers with acetone extracts of females, but not with ether or hexane extracts. In experiments using female cadavers dissected into head, mesosoma, and gaster, and then reassembled using one unwashed body section and two body sections washed in acetone, males were attracted only to the reassembled cadavers with an unwashed mesosoma. These findings suggest that (1) courtship behaviour in males of T. brochymenae is triggered by a short‐range sex pheromone produced by females; (2) the age and the physiological condition of females (virgin/mated) influence pheromone release or production; (3) the female's mesosoma is the source of the sex pheromone; and (4) polar components of the sex pheromone play a major role in influencing male behaviour. Our results suggest that quasi‐gregarious egg parasitoids are selected for short‐range rather than long‐range sex pheromones.  相似文献

The correlation between triacylglycerols containing conjugated diene fatty acyl moieties and pheromone aldehydes in the sex pheromone glands of females of Manduca sexta was investigated. Females decapitated 15 h after adult emergence neither called nor produced pheromone during the natural period of pheromone production on the subsequent two nights. However, these females could be stimulated to produce sex pheromone for prolonged periods by repeated injection of synthetic pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN). Gas chromatographic analysis of methanolysis products of lipids extracted from the pheromone glands of decapitated and intact females showed no differences in the amounts of fatty acyl precursors of pheromone. High performance liquid chromatographic analysis of the triacylglycerols containing conjugated diene analogues of the pheromone components (diene TG), obtained 24 and 48 h after decapitation, showed that the total amounts of these components were not affected by decapitation. The amounts of all diene TG peaks declined significantly when decapitated females were stimulated to produce pheromone during a 7 h period by repeated injection of PBAN at 3 h intervals but recovered when pheromone production subsided. These results indicate that PBAN induces liberation of pheromone precursors from the triacylglycerols during pheromone biosynthesis but does not induce replenishment of this storage pool. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    ABSTRACT. . The females of the tropical Bruchid Bruchidius atrolineatus (Pic) (Coleoptera) produce a sex pheromone that influences male behaviour. This pheromone, tested on males in an olfactometer, triggers characteristic antennal movements followed by a distinct chemo-anemotaxis. Sex pheromone production depends on the age of the females and is partly correlated with their ovarian activity. Females 0–24 h old are not attractive, but they begin to attract males on the second day of adult life. Vitellogenesis seems to correlate with the emission or the production of the pheromone but there is no precise synchrony between the two phenomena which are probably induced by the same endocrine factors. Within 1 h after mating there is a decrease in the females' attractiveness, which lasts at least 48 h. Under our experimental conditions no particular rhythm of production or emission of the sex pheromone in B. atrolineatus could be observed.  相似文献

    The rate of pheromone emission from wild and laboratory-reared gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) virgin females was determined with an all-glass aeration apparatus. This device incorporated a bed of 1-mm glass beads to extract entrained pheromone from the air flowing over the protruded gland. The temporal pattern of emission was established by monitoring individual females after eclosion for 24 consecutive 2-hr intervals.At a constant 24°C, both wild and laboratory females exhibited a similar diel periodicity of pheromone emission. The mean release rate increased after onset of photophase, generally attained maximal levels between 1600 and 2200 hr and declined during scotophase. Pheromone was released continuously and the mean daily emission increased with age for both wild and laboratory moths. The mean emission rate over the 48-hr monitoring interval was 15.4 ng2 hr for wild females vs 14.7 ng2 hr for laboratory moths. The peak emission from 2-day-old laboratory moths was ca.28 ng2 hr compared with the ca.25 ng2 hr released by their wild counterparts.The calling periodicity of laboratory females was determined at a constant 24°C and under a natural temperature rhythm. At 24°C, the proportion of females calling exceeded 45% throughout the diel period, whereas under the temperature rhythm, calling was virtually eliminated by temperatures below 15°C, indicating that temperature acts as an exogenous cue to modify the expression of the calling rhythm and thus potentially the periodicity of pheromone emission.  相似文献

    The hourly and daily variation of calling behavior and sex pheromone production by the female black cutworm moth, Agrotis ypsilon (Rottemberg), were investigated. Both calling behavior and titers of five sex pheromone components showed distinct diel rhythms, and peak periods of calling and pheromone titer were synchronous. Females began to call on the first night after eclosion and called mainly during the second half of the scotophase. The percentage of females calling increased in 1 to 3-d-old females and decreased in 3 to 7-d-old females. Females advanced their calling time with increasing age (1 to 7 d). GC-MS analysis of hexane extracts of pheromone glands revealed that the titers of the five sex pheromone components were very low on the first night after eclosion, but increased sharply and peaked on the third night. Titers decreased greatly with increasing age (3 to 7 d), but from the onset of the scotophase to 4.5 h into scotophase, titers remained invariate. However, from 4.5 to 7 h, pheromone titers, especially that of the primary component Z7-12:Ac, increased sharply and peaked. After the peak, the titers decreased greatly at 8 h, and thereafter decreased gradually to the level before 4.5 h. The quantity of each component almost reached zero after lights-on.  相似文献

    ABSTRACT. Both male and female Taeniopoda eques (Burmeister) emit a defensive secretion from their thoracic spiracles. The secretion from mature females was found to act as a sex pheromone, eliciting mating behaviour in males. Females became chemically attractive to males about 16–18 days after eclosion.     Abstract 1 Despite the importance of Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin‐Mèneville) in coffee production worldwide, there is a lack of information on its reproduction. This knowledge will help in mass rearing, and support the development of behavioural control techniques for this insect. The present study determined the effects of delayed mating and previous matings of male L. coffeella on fecundity, egg viability and frequency of female remating. 2 The highest levels of fecundity and egg viability were obtained from matings of 1–3‐day‐old females. When females mated at 5 days of age, there were reductions of 40% in oviposition and of 43% in egg viability. 3 Females mated with 2‐day‐old virgin males were more fecund than those mated with older males; egg viability was also low (18%) from females mated with older males. 4 Virgin females that mated with virgin males laid a greater number of eggs than those mated with previously copulated males. Egg viability decreased with the increase in the number of previous male matings. 5 Five‐day‐old females remated in greater proportion than 2–3‐day‐old females. Females that copulated with males that had previously mated three times had higher rates of remating than those that copulated with virgin males. 6 The results obtained indicate that 1–3 days after emergence is the optimum age for mating. The implications of these findings for the control of L. coffeella by synthetic sex pheromone are discussed.  相似文献

    Temperature-dependent sex determination has been demonstrated in some species of fish, and a high temperature during the period of sex differentiation typically produces a male-dominant population. This research investigated the gonadal sex differentiation and effect of rearing temperature on the sex ratio in larval black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, which is a viviparous species. Two types of gonads were histologically distinguishable in fish 20 mm in total length (TL). The putative ovary started forming an ovarian cavity, while the putative testis was not clearly differentiated until 51 mm TL. In a temperature-controlled experiment, the proportions of females were 45% at 10°C, 46% at 14°C, 50% at 18°C, 63% at 22°C, and 83% (significantly different from 1:1 sex ratio) at 24°C. These results suggest that morphological sex differentiation in black rockfish occurs at approximately 20 mm in TL, and it is possible that high temperatures (24°C) induce not a male- but a female-dominant population in this species.  相似文献

    Experiments were conducted to study the orientation of adult cigarette beetles,Lasioderma serricorne (F.), to plant volatiles in a walking bioassay. Seven out of sixteen test materials that displayed attractive responses were further studied for (1) responses to whole extracts from three types of solvents and (2) the effects of sex and mating status of L. serricorne on responses to plant volatiles. Bioassays with extracts revealed that responses of L. serricorne varied among the type of solvent extract. Volatiles from different Capsicum products attracted significantly more adult beetles than did volatiles from other materials. When virgin males, virgin females and mated females were bioassayed, mated females responded significantly more than the other groups to plant volatiles. Semiochemical-based pest management methods may be developed for L. serricorne with plant volatile-based attractants that may be identified and used alone or combined with a synthetic sex pheromone to manipulate beetle behavior.     The sterile insect technique (SIT) potentially provides a socially acceptable approach for insect eradication of new pest incursions. The light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), was discovered in Berkeley (CA, USA) in 2006, leading to an incursion response that included this technology. In this study, we assessed factors affecting mating success from a bisex release of irradiated moths: effects of radiation dose on male multiple mating, male flight competition, female sex pheromone titre and attractiveness of irradiated females to males, and identification of successful mating in vineyards of either irradiated or wild males (identified by isotope analysis of spermatophores from sentinel females). There was a significant negative relationship between male radiation dose and mating frequency. In head‐to‐head flights of irradiated males against non‐irradiated males to a pheromone lure in a wind tunnel, irradiated males reached the lure first only 31% of the time. With increasing radiation dose, the production of the major sex pheromone component in females, (E)‐11‐tetradecenyl acetate, dropped, from 0.7 ± 0.1 ng per female in non‐irradiated females to 0.2 ± 0.07 ng per female when irradiated at 300 Gy. Male catch was reduced to 11% of control females in traps containing females irradiated at 300 Gy. Isotope analysis of spermatophores found in the bursa copulatrix of females indicated that mating success of irradiated males inside the live (entry‐only) traps containing virgin females was lower (13.1 ± 3.3%) than suggested by male catch (21.2 ± 3.8%) in pheromone traps, the current standard for assessing field competitiveness. Impacts of irradiation on male and female moth fitness should be taken into account to improve estimates of irradiated to wild male E. postvittana overflooding ratios needed for population suppression.  相似文献

    The Asian paddle crab, Charybdis japonica, native to the northwest Pacific, is an invasive species that has established populations within northeastern New Zealand. Here, we provide a detailed examination of C. japonica's reproductive seasonality and gametogenesis, sizes at physiological maturity, and sex ratios outside its native range. Trapping in the Weiti River Estuary, Whangaparoa (36°38.4′S, 174°43.6′E) from February 2010 to May 2012 indicated a male‐biased population. Reproductive seasonality largely depended on female condition, since males contained ripe spermatozoa year‐round. Female gametogenesis began during late autumn, with oocyte development occurring throughout winter to early spring. Based on the presence of mature gametes during late winter and the appearance of gravid females in early November, mating began during early spring, with spawning in mid‐spring. Spawning coincided with a large drop in the gonad index, and occurred between sea surface temperatures of 17–22°C and 11.75–13.5 h day length. Females remained reproductive for up to 5 months of the year. Histological observation suggested that CW50 (the carapace width at which 50% of the population is mature) for females was 46.39 mm, while CW50 for males could not be determined due to a paucity of immature males. Histological analysis also suggested that females of C. japonica could produce store sperm and multiple broods annually.  相似文献

    Temperature is considered one of the most important mediators of phenotypic plasticity in ectotherms. Here, we investigated life history traits of the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), at a wide range of temperatures (16, 19, 22, 24, 26 and 28°C). The larval and pupal times were significantly decreased with increasing rearing temperature and growth rate was positively correlated with temperature. However, the relationship between body size and rearing temperature in C. bowringi did not follow the temperature–size rule; both males and females reached the highest body weight at 19°C. Females were significantly larger than males at all temperatures. Male pupae lost significantly more weight at metamorphosis compared to females. However, diapausing males gained significantly higher weight after feeding compared to diapausing females at higher temperatures of 22, 24, 26 and 28°C. Body weight tended to decrease with increasing rearing temperature, whereas sexual size dimorphism (SSD) tended to increase with increasing rearing temperature; thus, Rensch's rule is upheld. The degree to which SSD changed with temperature varied with different development stages. SSD was lowest in pupae, highest in newly emerged adults and intermediate in diapausing adults.  相似文献
