Callus cultures were established from dioecious plant species Rumex acetosella and R. acetosa, using cotyledons, hypocotyls and stem tips of aseptically germinated seedlings as primary explants. Cultures were also established from male and female R. acetosella adult plants, starting from vegetative lateral buds. Cell division was induced using a high 2,4-D concentration, while bud induction and multiplication were stimulated on a medium with high BAP/IAA ratio. Cotyledon fragments of both species produced only rhizogenic calli. Hypocotyl-derived calli of R. acetosella produced buds, while those of R. acetosa showed no bud forming response under these conditions. Bud multiplication occurred in stem tip cultures of both species and in lateral bud cultures of R. acetosella. Calli derived from male plants produced more buds than those from female. Shoots were easily rooted using IBA, and plantlets were effectively transferred to soil. Flowering was not induced in culture. The sex of regenerated male and female plants was not altered by the culture conditions.  相似文献

Background and aimsThis paper is about pollen ecophysiology, anther opening, pollen dispersal and the timing of the male and female phases in Parietaria judaica (Urticaceae).MethodsEcophysiological (effects of different relative humidities (RHs) and osmotic relationships) and cytological methods (stigmatic receptivity, pollen viability, histology and histochemistry) were used to determine pollen and pollination features during the long blooming period of this species.Key resultsPollen is dispersed by rapid uncurling of the filament and anther opening. The filament and anther lack cells with lignified wall thickenings, which are usually responsible for anther opening and ballistic pollen dispersal. Instead, dispersal is the result of the sudden movement of the filament. Pollen is of the partially hydrated type, i.e. with a water content greater than 30% at shedding, and readily loses water, and hence viability, at low RH. Pollen carbohydrate reserves differ with season. Starchless grains germinate quickly and are less subject to water loss. Flowers are protogynous, pollen release occurring only after complete cessation of the female phase within an inflorescence.ConclusionParietaria has partially hydrated pollen which differs from typical pollen of this type because of its reduced size and the absence of callose. Because of its low water content at the time of shedding it survives better at higher RH. Dispersal and pollination are adapted to pollen features.  相似文献

Short- and long-term responses of the violaxanthin (V) and lutein epoxide (Lx) cycles were studied in two species of Lauraceae: sweet bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) and avocado (Persea americana L.). The Lx content exceeded the V content in shade leaves of both species. Both Lx and V were de-epoxidised on illumination, but only V was fully restored by epoxidation in low light. Violaxanthin was preferentially de-epoxidised in low light in L. nobilis. This suggests that Lx accumulates with leaf ageing, partly because its conversion to lutein is limited in shade. After exposure to strong light, shade leaves of avocado readjusted the total pools of alpha- and beta-xanthophyll cycles by de novo synthesis of antheraxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein. This occurred in parallel with a sustained depression of F(v)/F(m). In Persea indica, a closely related but low Lx species, F(v)/F(m) recovered faster after a similar light treatment, suggesting the involvement of the Lx cycle in sustained energy dissipation. Furthermore, the seasonal correlation between non-reversible Lx and V photoconversions and pre-dawn F(v)/F(m) in sun leaves of sweet bay supported the conclusion that the Lx cycle is involved in a slowly reversible downregulation of photosynthesis analogous to the V cycle.  相似文献

Cooling waters of the Oslavany power station show a depressive effect on the species diversity of mayfly nymphs. Only seven of 35 taxons found in the study area occurred in all localities. In the warmed stretch of the river, the abundance and biomass of mayfly nymphs as well as the production of the most important speciesPotamanthus luteus decreased; a gradual regeneration of the disturbed mayfly population could be observed downstream. In Locality 5, situated 3.5 km downstream from the mouth of cooling waters, the species diversity, abundance, and biomass of mayflies were 69, 30, and 66 per cent, resp., of values found in Locality 1 with natural temperatures; the production ofPotamanthus luteus was 70 per cent of that found in Locality 1.  相似文献

Demographic techniques have been employed to study populations of the rare orchid Liparis loeselii var. ovata across a range of dune slack habitats at a South Wales site. The study has shown that very large numbers of shoots (>300) may occur within a single 1 times 1 m quadrat and that the vegetative production of side shoots is common. Regular population surveys over time have shown that individuals represented by a single shoot can live for 8 years. Subsequent analyses of the floristic composition of the study quadrats has revealed the presence of subtle variations in species composition and vegetation structure in relation to age and hydrology, although all of the plots still fall within the SD14 Salix repens-Campylium stellatum dune slack community defined by the British National Vegetation Classification. When attributes of population flux are analysed in relation to floristic composition, one significant trend to emerge is that the appearance of new genets is most prevalent in successionally young slacks. As the natural formation of new slacks by sand blow is now a rare event in the South Wales dune field, the management of Liparis loeselii var. ovata is currentiy aimed at attempting to ensure the persistence of suitable communities through biomass reduction techniques.  相似文献

A large number of larval, metamorphosing and adult nonarasitic lampreys, lampetra planeri, were collected from three different rivers and placed in a morphological series. The characteristic changes were then described and used to propose a sequence of Stages (1–9). The first signs of metamorphosis (Stages 1–2), which could occasionaly be found as early as late June, are characterized by the eruption and enlargement of the eyes. This is followed by rapid transformation of the the oral hood into an oral disc, and changes in the shape of the pharyngeal region (Stages 2–5). Pronounced alterations in body pigmentation, enlargement of the fins and the development of teeth occur during Stages 4 to 6. The vast modifications involved in Stages 2 to 6 take place relatively repidly in the period between approximately mid-July and mid-September. The subsequent changes which occur more slowly, eventually lead to the production of immature (Stage 7) and sexually mature adults (Stage 8). Mature males are characterized by the presence of a urinogenital papilla, while the females posses a post-cloacal fin-like fold and greatly distended trunk. Spawning took place between late March and late April with the spent animals (Stage 9) dying soon afterwards. The above sequence of Stages was then compared with those found in a smaller sample of the parasitic and ancestral species L. fluviatilis. The early metamorphosing stages in both species are apparently indistinguishable but clear differences atart to appear at Stage 5 when the body surface of L. fluviatilis is assuming a distinct silvery sheen. This trend becomes more marked in Stages 6 and 7, at wich time the river lamprey also has a more pronounced eye and disc and a slimmer trunk. Stage 7 in L. fluviatilis represents animals migrating to the sea in either the autumn or spring to commence their trophic phase. On the other hand this Stage in L. planeri may be regarded as representing a massive contraction of adult Stages and is in many ways similar to the early upstream migrants of parasitic species.  相似文献

Two new pleurostomatid ciliates, Loxophyllum lembum sp. n., L. vesiculosum sp. n., and the poorly known L. perihoplophorum Buddenbrock, 1920, isolated from brackish waters in coastal regions of southern China, are described following observations of live cells and protargol‐impregnated specimens. Loxophyllum lembum sp. n. is distinguished by a combination of characters including two macronuclear nodules, 6–9 contractile vacuoles along the ventral margin, 11–14 right and 6–8 left kineties and the presence of cortical granules. Loxophyllum vesiculosum sp. n. differs from its congeners mainly by the unique distribution of contractile vacuoles, several of which lie along the dorsal margin and one on the ventral margin, and 15–21 right and 6–8 left kineties. Loxophyllum perihoplophorum is characterized by its large cell size (350–450 μm long in vivo), 3–5 contractile vacuoles along the dorsal margin in the posterior region of the body, and 19–23 right and 7–9 left kineties. An improved diagnosis of L. perihoplophorum is provided. The SSU rDNA sequence of L. perihoplophorum is reported for the first time and its molecular phylogeny is analyzed. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of SSU rDNA sequence data recover the monophyly both of the order Pleurostomatida and of the genus Loxophyllum.  相似文献

Cicadas are widely distributed in the Mediterranean area and are mainly distinguished by male acoustic signals, which act as specific mate recognition systems. Within the genus Cicada L. several species have diverged in their calling songs without showing external morphological differences, so acoustic recordings and genetic studies are particularly useful for systematic, biogeography and evolutionary studies. This study assesses sequence variation in closely related species of Cicada from the Mediterranean area, using domain III of the 12S rRNA mitochondrial gene in order to determine the phylogenetic relationships and the evolutionary history of this group, as well as the population structure of the two most common species, C. orni and C. barbara. Five distinct haplogroups were identified, C. orni, C. barbara, C. mordoganensis, C. cretensis and C. lodosi, each corresponding to a distinct evolutionary group. C. barbara was the most divergent species within this group, while C. orni and C. mordoganensis were the most similar. The population structure and demographic parameters of the species were not completely resolved. However, there is evidence for the separation of the C. orni Greek populations from the rest of Europe and also for demographic expansions probably related to Pleistocene climate changes. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 266–288.  相似文献

Abstract. When detached leaves of Sedum telephium are incubated in the absence of water, a rapid switch from C3 photosynthesis to CAM (as indicated by the onset of day-to-night fluctuations in titratable acidity. ΔH+) occurs within the first dark period. The C3-CAM switch in intact plants occurs within 3 5d. Extractable activity of phospho enol pyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) increases five-fold in intact plants during CAM induction; however, during rapid CAM induction in detached leaves, there is only a very small increase in PEPC activity. Fractionation by anion exchange chromatography of crude extracts from leaves of intact plants subjected to water deficit shows that CAM induction is associated with the appearance of a molecular species of PEPC termed PEPC I. PEPC I is barely detectable in well-watered plants which are not performing CAM. The major form in these plants is termed PEPC II. In leaves from intact plants, there is a significant positive correlation between PEPC I activity and ΔH+ during a period of increasing water deficit. PEPC I exhibits day to night fluctuations in malate sensitivity, being less sensitive during the dark period. In contrast, PEPC II is more sensitive to inhibition by malate and has no day to night fluctuation in sensitivity. In detached leaves deprived of water, a small increase in PEPC I capacity is detected at the end of the first dark period (20 h after the start of treatment). The results suggest that PEPC I is required for attainment of maximum nocturnal malic acid synthesis. There is a significant correlation between leaf water status (relative water content), ΔH+, total PEPC and PEPC I activity suggesting that the internal water status of the plant may be a trigger for CAM induction. Abscisic acid applied to detached leaves does not cause nocturnal acidification.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, a first record of Ribes uva-crispa L. (Grossulariaceae) – a new species of the Sicilian flora – from the Madonie Mts. is reported. The autochthonous and relict new population of Ribes uva-crispa L. (Grossulariaceae) is found on Mount Carbonara (Madonie Mts., North-Central Sicily), which is several hundred kilometers away from the Central Apenninic and the South Mediterranean locations of its distribution range. R. uva-crispa shows a distribution similar to other taxa extending from the Euro-Asiatic area to the mountains of North Africa with disjunct populations on the main Sicilian reliefs (Madonie and Nebrodi Mts.), testifying ancient phytogeographical connections. This noteworthy record adds a new species – as well as a new genus and new family – to the vascular flora of Sicily. Based on the morphological characters, the population found is to be referred to Ribes uva-crispa L. subsp. austro-europaeum (Bornm.) Bech var. glanduligerum (Lindberg) Maire.  相似文献

Cryptic species are often hypothesized on the basis of differences in courtship signals. These signal differences suggest that mate recognition systems, which include both courtship signals and responses to those signals, have diverged between genetically isolated populations. Cryptic species are therefore thought to represent distinct genetic units, the boundaries of which are maintained by premating incompatibilities, specifically by receiver preferences for conspecific signals. Laupala cerasina and L. kohalensis are sympatric species of swordtail crickets endemic to the big island of Hawaii, that are distinguishable by differences in male courtship song. We first tested whether groupings hypothesized by acoustic similarity reflect genetic groupings, using AFLP data to estimate genetic relationships. Second, we tested whether genetic boundaries are maintained by female preferences for conspecific song characteristics. Phonotaxis trials were used to determine the extent of female preferences for conspecific male song. Results generally support both hypotheses, but suggest the presence of porous species boundaries.

Spatio-temporal variations in the composition of the animal interactive assemblages may result in variations in selective pressures on the plants. In ant–seed dispersal mutualisms, the study of the magnitude of spatial and temporal variation of ant assemblages is rarely studied, limiting inferences and generalizations on the evolution of this mutualism. Here, we describe the ant–disperser assemblage of the myrmecochorous herb Helleborus foetidus in 14 populations across the Iberian Peninsula, and dissect the variation in the assemblage into spatial and temporal components as a first step to evaluate the evolutionary potential of this interaction. The ant–visitor assemblage of H. foetidus was mainly represented by species of Formicinae and it was highly diverse and variable in composition and function. Ants behaving as legitimate dispersers and those with mixed behaviour numerically dominated the assemblage compared with elaiosome consumers. The magnitude of the spatial variation was higher than the temporal variation, suggesting that the relative frequency of each functional group will be more foreseeable among years in each population than among populations. At the expense of further analysis of the effects of such variation on dispersal success, we can envisage a selection mosaic scenario, where local adaptive responses of plants might arise as a result of local variations in the specific composition and function of the assemblage.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 135–150.  相似文献

In the first report of the present series, six species collected from Nansei Islands were discussed. Of these, one found onElaeocarpus japonica was described as a new species,Pseudocercospora elaeocarpicola. Pseudocercospora plumeriae onPlumeria rubra was transferred from the genusCercospora and added to the Japanese fungous flora, together withCercosporidium bougainvilleae onBougainvillea spectabilis. One of the three remaining species,Pseudcercospora punicae onPunica granatum was newly recorded from Nansei Islands. On the other two species, namelyP. circumscissa andP. fukuokaensis, some additional notes concerning distribution and host range were described.  相似文献

Host plant quality for insects used in weed biological control influences their performance and hence their ability to suppress target host populations. Determining the specific response of these insects to the quality of their host is important because phytophagous insects have variable tolerances of the different constituents of host plant quality, most notably dietary nitrogen (N), but also other physical and chemical components. The invasive aquatic weed Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) was cultivated under varying nutrient conditions to determine the influence of plant quality on immature survival, development, larval mining, reproductive output and adult longevity of a leaf-mining fly Hydrellia purcelli Deeming (Diptera: Ephydridae). Additionally, field-collected H. verticillata was included in the investigations to assess the potential performance of H. purcelli in the field. Variation in plant tissue N and phosphorus (P) concentrations had no effects on larval survival, female fecundity, or adult longevity, but high levels of N and P were associated with reduced immature development times and higher body mass of females. Overall, plant quality factors not measured in this study appeared to have a greater impact on the performance of the fly, rather than dietary N and P. The results provided insights into optimal mass-rearing conditions for H. purcelli and the potential performance of the fly in the field in South Africa. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the importance of considering other aspects of plant quality for insect agents, in addition to dietary N and P, when developing mass-rearing protocols or predicting their potential impact in the field.  相似文献

Species 6 of the Australasian Anopheles farauti sibling species complex (Diptera: Culicidae) is described and formally named Anopheles oreios Bangs & Harbach, sp. n. Adult, pupal and fourth‐instar larval specimens collected in the Baliem Valley, Papua Province, Indonesia, are characterized and compared with those of Anopheles farauti, Anopheles hinesorum, Anopheles irenicus and Anopheles torresiensis (formerly informally denoted as species 1, 2, 7 and 3, respectively). The variable wings of adult females, the male genitalia, the pupa and the fourth‐instar larva of An. oreios are illustrated and DNA sequence data are included for regions coding for sections of the mitochondrial COI and COII genes. The biology of An. oreios and its relation to malaria transmission are discussed in detail and contrasted with the biology and disease relations of some members of the An. farauti and Anopheles punctulatus sibling species complexes.  相似文献
