Entomophthora aulicae caused 48–100% mortality in Heliothis zea larvae collected from sorghum August 24–September 6, 1978, in Tift County, Georgia. The same fungus also caused 74 and 95% mortality in Celama sorghiella larvae and 19 and 40% mortality in Spodoptera frugiperda larvae collected from sorghum August 30 and September 6 in the same area. Only 2 of 94 H. virescens larvae collected from a nearby patch of pigeon peas were killed by the fungus. This is the first report of epizootics caused by E. aulicae in pests of field crops in the southeastern United States.  相似文献

Parasites modify their host's appearance, behaviour and physiology to a certain extent. Many of these modifications are seen as purposefully manipulative, serving the parasite's interest. Endgames are particularly intriguing, where the parasite's development requires the host's death. ‘Summit’ or ‘treetop’ disease is one of such spectacular examples of parasite-induced death: the host dies attached to an elevated part of the vegetation. Many organisms induce summit disease including Ophiocordyceps, Entomophthora and Pandora species. We analyzed the development of Pandora formicae inside its ant host's body after the host's death. Our findings suggest that the fungus consumes the host's muscles and central nervous system quite fast, similarly to the related Entomophthora muscae. Unlike in Ophiocordyceps, no conidial anastomosis tubes were observed. Differences and similarities between the three fungi are discussed with regard to the extent of parasitic manipulation since Pandora's manipulative traits seem less pronounced than in Ophiocordyceps.  相似文献

Entomophthora leyteensis Villacarlos & Keller sp. nov., a species of Entomophthorales infecting the whitefly Tetraleurodes acaciae on Gliricidia sepium in the Philippines is described. Disease prevalence monitored weekly for 8 weeks indicated that the fungus could cause 8-31% infection within the whitefly population. Epizootics due to this fungus occurred in Inopacan, Leyte. Sampling live whitefly adults and dissecting them on glass slides for microscopic examination of fungal structures was found to give a better measure of prevalence than actual counts of infected insect cadavers. E. leyteensis is an important mortality factor for T. acaciae. Some speculations on the origin of the fungus are discussed here.  相似文献

The conidia of the endoparasitic fungus Meria coniospora (Deuteromycetes) had different patterns of adhesion to the cuticles of the several nematode species tested; adhesion in some species was only to the head and tail regions, on others over the entire cuticle, whereas on others there was a complete lack of adhesion. After adhesion, the fungus usually infected the nematode. However, adhesion to third-stage larvae of five animal parasitic nematodes, all of which carry the cast cuticle from the previous molt, did not result in infection. M. coniospora infected animal parasitic nematodes when this protective sheath was removed. Seven preparations of sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid) gave three types of response in adhesion-infection of nematodes: (i) a significant reduction in conidial adhesions; (ii) no interference with adhesion, but a 10-day delay in infection; and (iii) a delay in infection by 2 to 3 days. The current results support previous findings indicating involvement of sialic acids localized on nematode cuticles in recognition of prey by M. coniospora.  相似文献

Entomophthora aphidis survived for at least 32 weeks at 0°C and 20 or 50% RH and E. thaxteriana for at least 16 weeks at 10°C and 20 or 50% RH in mummified infected pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum. The fungi produced infective conidia when the aphids were moistened. This probably explains the survival of Entomophthora species infecting aphids during short periods when the weather is unsuitable for conidial discharge and host infection.  相似文献

As a supplement to the knowledge of entomophthoraceous fungi, a new species, Entomophthora batkoi n. sp., is described and illustrated. It is a pathogen of harvest spiders, Oligolophus tridens, Leiobunum blackwalli, and L. rotundum (Opiliones: Phalangiidae). Some problems of the validity of different taxonomic features are discussed.  相似文献

Entomophthora apiculata (Thaxter) Gustafs. was isolated from the following naturally-infected dipterans: Musca domestica L. (s.l.) (Muscidae); Hemipyrellia fernandica Macquart and Chrysomya chloropyga f. putoria Weidemann (Calliphoridae). This fungus produced rhizoids in vivo but not in vitro. Although it was readily cultured in vitro, experimental infection could not be achieved consistently — which calls for intensive research into the biology of this and other Entomophthora species.  相似文献

Soil-dwelling noctuids, mostly cutworm larvae were collected from various arable crops, from 39 sites in England and Wales between 1975 and 1978. They were individually reared in the laboratory, usually at 20 °C; 993 (79%) pupated and 859 (68%) emerged of which 819 (95%) were Agrotis segetum. Of those that died, 60 (4·8%) were infected, from a total of 25 sites; nuclear polyhedrosis, granulosis virus and a fungus of the family Entomophthoracae, probably Entomophthora megasperma, occurred in similar proportions. Disease incidence was low probably because natural concentrations of inocula were sparse. The possibility of controlling cutworms with their pathogens is discussed.  相似文献

Adults of Sarcophaga aldrichi killed by Entomophthora bullata were found in the field 7 days after emergence. Resting spores were not found until 6 days later, although conidia were formed from the first incidence of mortality. It is suggested that the life cycle of the fungus involves alternating generations of conidia and thick-walled overwintering resting spores.  相似文献

The identity and activity of an entomopathogenic fungus belonging to the Entomophthora muscae species complex and infecting Musca domestica in poultry houses from La Plata, Argentina, is reported. Entomophthora caused natural infections between September 2001 and September 2003. Primary conidia of this fungus were on average 29.5 ± 1.2 × 23.4 ± 2.4 μm and contained, on average, 10.5 ± 0.1 nuclei (range: 7–15) with an average diameter of 4.8 ± 0.1 μm. This fungus is identified as E. ferdinandii Keller (this specific epithet includes a nomenclaturally required spelling correction); this is a first record of E. ferdinandii in South America and of any member of the E. muscae species complex from flies in Argentina.  相似文献

Harposporium drechsleri is described as a new endoparasitic nematophagous fungus. In this species the spores are helicoid and following ingestion lodge in the oesophageal lumen where they subsequently germinate and penetrate the body cavity of the host. A two-celled accessory conidial state has also been found in this species. The fungus has been obtained in pure culture and cultural characteristics are given. Adult black flies (Simulium decorum) that succumbed to infections caused by Erynia curvispora (= Entomophthora curvispora) were found in Ithaca, New York. Other than hyphal elements of the fungus, the only recognizable structures found within most cadavers were remnants of the tracheal system. Several female cadavers contained well developed eggs. A few males contained shrivelled testes. Germination of primary conidia produced: 1, secondary conidia similar to the primaries or; 2, rounded secondary conidia or; 3, very long germ tubes. In vitro culture of E. curvispora was achieved but its ability to sporulate and to grow vegetatively gradually disappeared. Insectary-reared S. vittatum and S. pictipes were experimentally infected by conidia from in vitro cultures in the laboratory. The incubation period of the disease under these conditions was about six days. In nature the mycosis not only decreases the life expectancy of black flies but probably limits their egg-producing capabilities as well. The mycosis probably compromises the fly's ability to vector filarial worms that cause diseases of man and other mammals.  相似文献

Summary Entomophthora blunckii Lakon exZimmermann was isolated from larvae of the diamondback-mothPlutella maculipennis Curt. and redescribed. The fungus is characterized by its elliptical to pear-shaped conidia (from infected larvae 13–20×7–11 μm, mostly 15–18×7–9 μm) with the outer membrane often inflated and its branched conidiophores forming a dense gray to faint greenish-yellowish covering over the body of the insect. The symptoms of larvae infected withE. blunckii are described. The species grows on coagulated egg yolk, less well on Sabouraud-Dextrose-Agar. Growth was observed between 8° and 28°C but not at 32°C. The fungus is compared with similar species.

Ten different fungi recovered from diseased purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge plants collected in several locations in Florida and southeastern United States were screened for pathogenicity to purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) plants. Only Dactylaria higginsii, recovered from diseased purple nutsedge plants collected in Gainesville, caused disease in greenhouse trials. Based on the results of pathogenicity and host-range tests conducted in a greenhouse, D. higginsii was determined to have potential as a bioherbicide agent for purple nutsedge. It was highly pathogenic to purple nutsedge, yellow nutsedge (C. esculentus), annual sedge (C. compressus), globe sedge (C. globulosus), rice flatsedge (C. iria), and green kyllinga (Kyllinga brevifolia [=Cyperus brevifolius]). Initial symptoms on inoculated plants consisted of moist, dark-brown leaf spots that appeared 4 days after inoculation. The spots later coalesced into larger lesions and blotches, killing the leaves and sometimes the entire aerial parts. The fungus sporulated on the infected leaves and caused secondary infections on the emerging leaves and shoots within 20 to 28 days after inoculation. Inoculation with conidial suspensions of D. higginsii resulted in significant reductions in shoot numbers (72%), shoot dry weight (73%), and tuber dry weight (67%) of greenhouse-grown purple nutsedge plants 45 days after inoculation. The fungus did not infect any of the crop plants or weedy grasses (Poaceae) tested.  相似文献

Ophiocordyceps unituberculata, a new insect pathogenic fungus from southwestern China, is described using molecular phylogenetic and morphological data. This fungus differs from other Ophiocordyceps species by its enormously long monophialidic conidiogenous cells and a large periclinal protuberance often growing near the apex of conidiogenous cells, single conidia (lanceolate to fusiform) embedded in mucous sheath, and much larger conidial dimensions. Four-locus (nrSSU, nrLSU, tef-1α and rpb1) and ITS data phylogenetic analyses show that O. unituberculata belongs to the Hirsutella nodulosa clade within the genus Ophiocordyceps of Ophiocordycipitaceae and is a separate clade from other allied species. Molecular phylogeny and morphology both strongly support the distinctiveness of this taxon. The interspecific relationships in the H. nodulosa clade are discussed.  相似文献

Metarhizium rileyi is an entomopathogenic fungus of Lepidoptera and infects many noctuids, which are key pests of agricultural crops. In this literature review, we summarise the state of art and use of this potential biological pest control agent. Pathogen–host interactions include conidial adhesion, invasion process, and enzymatic activity. Environmental factors that impact the productivity associated with this fungus such as environment temperature, humidity, and availability of spores are discussed. Recent research has focused on enzymatic aspects related to pathogenicity, in which the cause is not fully elucidated yet. More than 60 known host species, mainly lepidopterans, are listed. Non-susceptible species, including predatory insects, are also presented. The difficulty of mass production and the formulation are the principal obstacles in use of M. rileyi. We summarise the challenges necessary to better utilise this agent in biocontrol and suggest novel research approaches, including the development of commercial and technically viable formulations.  相似文献

Intra- and interspecific competition between laboratory populations of four green leafhoppers, Nephotettix spp. was studied in the laboratory under three different temperature regimes of 24°C, 27°C and 30°C. For the single-species population of the three tropical species, the equilibrium density increased as the temperature increased. On the other hand, for the temperature species N. cincticeps, the highest equilibrium density was at the intermediate temperature and the lowest at high temperature. Interspecific interactions between two tropical (N. virescens vs. N. nigropictus), a tropical and a temperature (N. virescens vs. N. cincticeps) and a rice-feeding and a grass-inhabiting (N. virescens vs. N. malayanus) Nephotettix species were also studied in the laboratory at the three temperature regimes. Temperature differentially affected the outcome of competition between two Nephotettix species. Between N. virescens and N. nigropictus, the latter was more successful over the former at low and intermediate temperatures, while the former was more successful at high temperature. Between N. virescens and N. cincticeps, the temperate species inhibited the growth of the tropical species at low temperature while the tropical species inhibited the growth of the temperate species at high temperature. At intermediate temperature, the population of N. virescens persisted at a slightly higher density over the population of N. cincticeps. Between the rice-feeding N. virescens and the grass-inhabiting N. malayanus, regardless of temperature the population density of the latter was greatly reduced and later became extinct while the population of the former continued its growth. These consequences of competition between two Nephotettix species conformed fairly well to those predicted by theLotka-Volterra model using demographic parameters specified for each species.  相似文献
