Factors responsible for interspecific variability in host-specificity were investigated within 15 genera (including 176 species) of metazoan parasites found in Canadian freshwater fish. For each species in a genus, the parasite's number of known hosts was determined from published host-parasite records. The effects of the total number and mean size of potential hosts (i.e. all fish species belonging to the family or families that include a parasite's known hosts) on number of hosts of congeneric species were evaluated using multiple regressions. Since parasite species that have been recorded often tend to have greater numbers of known hosts than do seldom-recorded parasites, it was necessary to control for the confounding effect of study intensity. In all parasite genera, whether from highly specific taxa such as monogeneans or from less host-specific ones, there was a positive relationship between the number of potential hosts and the number of known hosts. However, no consistent relationships were observed between the mean size of potential hosts and number of known hosts. These results suggest that the availability of suitable host species may have been a key factor limiting the colonization of new hosts by fish parasites.  相似文献

Organisms that are abundant locally in a habitat patch are commonly observed to be frequent regionally, or among patches. In parasites, species present in high numbers in host individuals are also present in many individuals in the host population. On a larger scale, however, when host species are considered as patches, we may expect the opposite pattern because of the cost of producing mechanisms to evade the immune responses of several host species. Thus parasite species exploiting many host species may achieve lower average abundance in their hosts than parasite species exploiting fewer host species. This prediction was tested with data from 188 species of metazoan parasites of freshwater fish, using a comparative approach that controlled for study effort and phylogenetic influences. A negative correlation was found between the number of host species used by parasites and their average abundance in hosts, measured as either prevalence or intensity of infection. There was no evidence that parasite species fall into distinct categories based on abundance patterns, but rather that they fall along a continuum ranging from a generally low abundance in many host species, to a generally high abundance in few host species. These results applied to both ecto- and endoparasites. The pattern observed suggests the existence of a trade-off between how many host species a parasite can exploit and how well it does on average in those hosts.  相似文献

Studies on the helminth parasites of freshwater fishes of the Sudan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lotfi F.  Khalil 《Journal of Zoology》1969,158(2):143-170
2419 freshwater fishes from the Sudan were examined for helminth parasites and found to harbour one monogenean species, 15 species of adult digenetic trematodes, three species of larval trematodes, 16 species of adult cestodes, 13 species of adult nematodes, two species of larval nematodes and three species of acanthocephalans. Four species of adults and four species of larval worms are recorded for the first time in the Sudan and 30 new hosts are listed. The intensity of infestation of each species, the host-specificity and the variations in the infestation of fishes are discussed. The helminth fauna of the Sudan is compared with that of other African countries.  相似文献

Distribution records of 152 adult helminth taxa parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico were analysed to determine areas of high richness and endemism. Distribution maps were prepared for each taxon and overlaid onto a map of Mexico divided into 1 × 1 degree grid-cells. Richness was determined by counting recorded helminth species in each grid-cell. A corrected weighted endemism index was calculated for each grid-cell, and the relationship between richness and endemicity was analysed with an Olmstead–Tukey corner test of association. Five areas of high richness and endemism were identified: (1) Los Tuxtlas and the Papaloapan river basin, on the Gulf of Mexico; (2) the Grijalva-Usumacinta basin near the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain; (3) the Yucatan Peninsula; (4) the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve in western Mexico; and (5) the Pátzcuaro lake, in central Mexico. The distribution of richness and endemism of helminth parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico is congruent with distributional patterns described for other freshwater taxa in Mexico. Patterns of richness and/or endemism in the studied areas can be explained by the ichthyological composition of their bodies of water. The present study establishes an objective way of analysing the relationship between richness and endemicity, and suggests that helminths can make valuable contributions to regionalization of geographical areas and for identification of rich and biologically complex areas with potential for conservation of aquatic systems.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 435–444.  相似文献

As a result of freshwater fish parasitofauna investigations, throughout the past 75 years, the number of parasitic species is presented. This paper reviews the history, current state, and tendencies of the fish parasitofauna studies in Serbian open waters. Up to now, in total 170 parasitic species have been reported. Systematic parasitofauna investigations have been carried out on 54 freshwater fish species in waters of the Danube River Basin in Serbia, also in hill-mountanious watercourses, lakes and salmonid fishpond of Sjenicko-Pesterska plateau (south-west region of Serbia), Homolje area (east Serbia), and in Vlasina lake (south-east Serbia). This data review pointed that it is necessary to continue the investigation on fish parasites in Serbia. The data on freshwater fish parasites are important for evaluation of general influence on the community structure.  相似文献

A survey of the parasites of 243 fish belonging to 13 species, from the Corrib catchment area, western Ireland, was undertaken. At least 32 species of metazoan parasites were shown to be present. Diplostomum gasterostei, Tylodelphys clavata, Eubothrium salvelini, Cucullanus truttae, Raphidascaris acus, Ergasilus gibbus and Salmincola gordoni appear to be first records for Ireland and Phyllodistomum conostomum has not previously been reported from the British Isles. New host records involving Lamptera planeri, Salvelinus alpinus, Abramis brama, Noemacheilus barbatulus, Anguilla anguilla and Pungitius pungitius for the British Isles are given.  相似文献

Aim To uncover and describe patterns of biogeography of helminth parasites in freshwater fishes of Mexico, and to understand processes that determine them. Three predictions about host‐specificity, faunal exchange in transitional areas, and the biogeographical ‘core’ fauna, are evaluated, all of which follow from a fundamental hypothesis: that parasites show characteristic associations with particular host clades. The parasite fauna of the southern Mexican cichlids and of the fishes of the Mesa Central are examined as case studies that reflect Neotropical and Nearctic historical influences. Location The region covered in this study includes most of Mexico, with emphasis on six biogeographical areas: the Yucatán Peninsula (area 1), the Grijalva‐Usumacinta drainage (area 2), the Papaloapan and Pánuco drainages (area 3), the Balsas drainage (area 4), the Lerma‐Santiago drainage (area 5), and the Bravo drainage (area 6). Methods A parasite data base containing all the records of helminth parasites of freshwater fishes of Mexico was filtered to extract records of adult helminth parasites in freshwater fishes from the six biogeographical areas designated in this study. Jaccard's similarity coefficients and cluster analyses (using upgma ) were used to analyse the extent of faunal similarity between the designated biogeographical areas and between host (fish) families. Taxonomic composition of parasite assemblages in different host groups was also qualitatively compared from summary data. These data were used to test the three main predictions. Results To date, 184 species of helminths (120 as adults) have been recorded from 127 freshwater fishes in Mexico (almost 33% of the total fish diversity of Mexico). Of these parasite species, 69 are digenetic flukes, 51 are nematodes, 33 are monogeneans, 25 are tapeworms, and only six are acanthocephalans. The data and analyses from the six biogeographical areas corroborate the predictions that: (1) the adult parasite fauna is largely circumscribed by higher levels of monophyletic host taxa (families, orders, etc.), and that this pattern is independent of areas; (2) areas within a certain biogeographical region, and consequently with similar fish composition (e.g. areas 1, 2 and 3) have more similar parasite faunas compared to areas with less similar fish faunal composition; and (3) ‘core’ parasite faunas persist to some extent in transitional areas with limited host‐sharing. Main conclusions Helminth biodiversity in Mexican freshwater fishes is determined by the historical and contemporary biogeography of their hosts. Host lineage specificity, mainly at the level of the host family, appears to be an important factor in the distribution of the parasites. Most fish families (Characidae, Cichlidae, Pimelodidae, Ictaluridae, Catsotomidae, Goodeidae, Atherinidae) possess their own characteristic ‘core’ helminth fauna, with limited host‐sharing in transitional areas (e.g. areas 3 and 4). A re‐evaluation of the helminth fauna of Mexican cichlids questions the hypothesis that cichlids lost parasites during the colonization of Mexico from South America. The evidence supports the idea that they acquired new parasites by host switching, possibly from marine or brackish‐water percomorphs. In contrast, the parasite fauna of the Mesa Central remains enigmatic and reflects the region's history of endemicity with historical marine and Nearctic connections.  相似文献

Absolute barriers to dispersal are not common in marine systems, and the prevalence of planktonic larvae in marine taxa provides potential for gene flow across large geographic distances. These observations raise the fundamental question in marine evolutionary biology as to whether geographic and oceanographic barriers alone can account for the high levels of species diversity observed in marine environments such as coral reefs, or whether marine speciation also operates in the presence of gene flow between diverging populations. In this respect, the ecological hypothesis of speciation, in which reproductive isolation results from divergent or disruptive natural selection, is of particular interest because it may operate in the presence of gene flow. Although important insights into the process of ecological speciation in aquatic environments have been provided by the study of freshwater fishes, comparatively little is known about the possibility of ecological speciation in marine teleosts. In this study, the evidence consistent with different aspects of the ecological hypothesis of speciation is evaluated in marine fishes. Molecular approaches have played a critical role in the development of speciation hypotheses in marine fishes, with a role of ecology suggested by the occurrence of sister clades separated by ecological factors, rapid cladogenesis or the persistence of genetically and ecologically differentiated species in the presence of gene flow. Yet, ecological speciation research in marine fishes is still largely at an exploratory stage. Cases where the major ingredients of ecological speciation, namely a source of natural divergent or disruptive selection, a mechanism of reproductive isolation and a link between the two have been explicitly documented are few. Even in these cases, specific predictions of the ecological hypothesis of speciation remain largely untested. Recent developments in the study of freshwater fishes illustrate the potential for molecular approaches to address specific questions related to the ecological hypothesis of speciation such as the nature of the genes underlying key ecological traits, the magnitude of their effect on phenotype and the mechanisms underlying their differential expression in different ecological contexts. The potential provided by molecular studies is fully realized when they are complemented with alternative (e.g. ecological, theoretical) approaches.  相似文献

Aim The distributional patterns of helminthological fauna of freshwater fishes were analysed to postulate a general hypothesis on the relationships of some Mexican hydrological systems. Location Eight hydrological systems of central and eastern Mexico were studied and compared with records from Nicaragua. Methods A Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) was applied to the presence/absence of ninety‐two helminth parasite taxa (Monogeneans, Digeneans, Cestodes, Acanthocephalans and Nematodes) of freshwater fishes, from eight Mexican hydrological systems, using the Hennig86 program. Results The results represent the first attempt for a biogeographical analysis through application of the PAE method to the distributional patterns of helminth parasites of freshwater fishes in Mexico. A single most parsimonious cladogram was obtained, which grouped all the Neotropical systems in accordance with previous proposals based on other plant and animal taxa. Main conclusions The most basal systems were Santiago and Lerma basins, which exhibited Nearctic affinities. The remaining areas of the cladogram showed Neotropical affinities. All the southeastern systems were grouped in a clade with the Nicaragua system, providing support for a ‘Mesoamerican province’ based on helminth parasites of cichlids. The cladogram also suggests that the treatment of the Lerma‐Santiago basin as a single biogeographical unit is inaccurate and that they should be treated as separate systems.  相似文献

We used metadata on nine reproductive traits of 67 species of Brazilian iteroparous, oviparous, teleost freshwater fishes to test phenotypes associations to discriminate species that only spawn in large rivers (lotic fishes) from those capable to spawn in lentic habitats (lentic fishes). We tested the hypothesis that lotic fishes present spawning migration, shorter spawning season, single spawning, no parental care, free eggs, higher relative fecundity, faster embryogenesis, and larger size, while lentic fishes present no spawning migration, longer spawning season, multiple spawning, parental care, adhesive eggs, lower relative fecundity, slower embryogenesis, and smaller size. Our analyses supported the hypothesis but not all phenotypic associations satisfied it, specifically with regard to lentic fishes or to pairs of phenotypes typical of lentic fishes. We also concluded that spawning in large rivers is a better predictor of bionomic characters than spawning in lentic habitats, and lotic fishes are specialists compared to lentic fishes.  相似文献
