Behavioral and adrenocortical reactivity to stressful stimulation was examined in 12- and 13-day-old chicks of two lines of Japanese quail selected over several generations for exaggerated (HS: high stress) or reduced (LS: low stress) plasma corticosterone (B) response to brief immobilization stress. Plasma B concentrations and tonic immobility (TI) fear reactions were measured in unstressed (control) and stressed (overnight cooping) chicks of both lines. The stress treatment was applied over a period of 12-20 hr and it involved capture by the experimenter, inescapable exposure to an unfamiliar environment and to strange conspecifics, reductions in ambient temperature and floor space, and the deprivation of food and water. Chicks of the HS line were more susceptible to the induction of TI and they remained immobile longer than did LS chicks. Therefore HS chicks were considered to be more fearful than their LS counterparts. Stress treatment elicited a marked adrenocortical response that was more pronounced in HS than in LS chicks. Stress treatment also increased susceptibility to TI but did not significantly affect the duration of immobility. These findings suggest that selecting the quail for differential corticosterone response to a particular stressor had exerted an unconscious and concomitant effect on underlying fearfulness as well as on their adrenocortical reactivity to several other stressful situations. The results are further discussed in terms of a putative relationship between adrenocortical activation and fearfulness.  相似文献

Male domestic chicks were reared in groups with distinctive cues (red crosses) placed on the walls of the home boxes from 2 to 7 d of age and their subsequent behaviour in an open field in the presence or absence of the familiar rearing cues was recorded.Ambulation, peeping, pecking, jumping and standing were all significantly higher and the latency to the first step, duration of freezing, sitting time, lying time and time spent with the eyes closed were significantly lower when the familiar rearing cues were present in the test situation. These observations are consistent with the suggestion that the birds are less fearful in the presence of familiar stimuli. The presence of the familiar cues also increased the time spent feeding and drinking. The preference effect was a specific one, for birds exposed to red crosses in early life preferred such stimuli to black circles in a subsequent two-choice situation, whereas chicks reared with black circles preferred them to red crosses. There was no generalisation of attachment from one stimulus to the other. As the chicks spent more time feeding and drinking in the presence of the familiar cues, it is assumed that fear was reduced. Thus, the results tend to confirm that the frequency of certain behaviour patterns is indicative of certain levels of fear.  相似文献

The relation of fear and arousal to peeping in socially-reared chicks was investigated in a series of four experiments. Pre-test exposure to loud noise or shock resulted in decreased peeping in chicks tested in isolation, while in the presence of a mirror, pre-test exposure to loud noise reduced peeping, but pre-test shock had no effect. It was also shown that neither transquilizer (Pacitran) ingestion nor experimenter proximity had any significant influence on peeping. An inverse relationship between peeping and activity latency was also revealed in these experiments, and peeping was usually found to precede the initiation of activity. The relationship between fear and the peep vocalization of sociallyreared chicks is discussed.  相似文献

Introduction

Tonic immobility (TI) is fear-induced freezing that animals may undergo when confronted by a threat. It is principally observed in prey species as defence mechanisms. In our preliminary research, we detected large inter-individual variations in the frequency and duration of freezing behavior among newly hatched domestic chicks (Gallus gallus). In this study we aim to identify the copy number variations (CNVs) in the genome of chicks as genetic candidates that underlie the behavioral plasticity to fearful stimuli.

Methods

A total of 110 domestic chicks were used for an association study between TI responses and copy number polymorphisms. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) was conducted between chicks with high and low TI scores using an Agilent 4×180 custom microarray. We specifically focused on 3 genomic regions (>60 Mb) of chromosome 1 where previous quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis showed significant F-values for fearful responses.

Results

ACGH successfully detected short CNVs within the regions overlapping 3 QTL peaks. Eleven of these identified loci were validated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) as copy number polymorphisms. Although there wkas no significant p value in the correlation analysis between TI scores and the relative copy number within each breed, several CNV loci showed significant differences in the relative copy number between 2 breeds of chicken (White Leghorn and Nagoya) which had different quantitative characteristics of fear-induced responses.

Conclusion

Our data shows the potential CNVs that may be responsible for innate fear response in domestic chicks.  相似文献

ObjectiveEarly environmental enrichment in life can improve cognition in animals. The effect of prenatal auditory stimulation on learning ability and fear level in chick embryos remained unexplored. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of prenatal auditory stimulation on the learning ability and fear level of chicks.MethodsA total of 450 fertilized eggs were randomly divided into 5 groups, including control group (C), low-sound intensity music group (LM), low-sound intensity noise group (LN), high-sound intensity noise group (HN) and high-sound intensity music group (HM). From the 10th day of embryonic development until hatching, group LM and group LN received 65 to 75 dB of music and noise stimulation. Group HN and group HM received 85 to 95 dB of noise and music stimulation, and group C received no additional sound. At the end of incubation, the one-trial passive avoidance learning (PAL) task and tonic immobility (TI) tests were carried out, and the serum corticosterone (CORT) and serotonin (5-HT) concentrations were determined.ResultsThe results showed that compared with the group C, 65 to 75 dB of music and noise stimulation did not affect the PAL avoidance rate (p>0.05), duration of TI (p>0.05) and the concentration of CORT (p>0.05) and 5-HT (p>0.05) in chicks. However, 85 to 95 dB of music and noise stimulation could reduce duration of TI (p<0.05) and the concentration of CORT (p<0.05), but no significant effect was observed on the concentration of 5-HT (p>0.05) and PAL avoidance rate (p>0.05).ConclusionTherefore, the prenatal auditory stimulation of 85 to 95 dB can effectively reduce the fear level of chicks while it does not affect the learning ability.  相似文献

As soon as they hatch, gallinaceous chicks follow broody hens. This matriarchal unit presents a temporal organization of activity. The ontogeny of this ultradian rhythm of activity was followed in Japanese quail during their first 3 weeks of life. Under controlled laboratory conditions, 12 groups of four chicks were recorded using an activity monitoring system. They were observed between the ages of 2 and 17 days. Chicks in groups presented an ultradian rhythm of activity, with a period that increased significantly from 14.3 ± 1.4 minutes when chicks were 2 days old to 26.0 ± 1.9 minutes when they were 16 days old. The increase of ultradian periodicity was particularly pronounced during their first and third weeks of life. Finally, the ultradian period was correlated positively with body weight of the chicks. The usefulness of peeping in indexing attachment to visual and auditory stimuli was confirmed in chicks between 18 and 30 h post-hatch. Greater attractiveness of the auditory stimulus was associated with a more marked initial reduction in peeping after auditory stimulus presentation, suggesting a greater attentional impact, and with greater effectiveness in reducing peeping during repeated stimulus presentations. There was no difference between the two stimuli in effects on peeping before or shortly after the initial approach to the stimuli. Of additional interest was the observation of a sharp rise in peeping immediately preceding the increased activity associated with initial approach. The possible relationship between peeping and arousal was considered.  相似文献

Abstract. In a factorial experiment, fifth-instar Locusta migratoria (L.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) were given either dry food (lyophilized grass) and drinking water, food only, water only, or neither food nor water.Food consumption and insect weight were measured daily, and the behaviour of each locust was recorded for 5 h on each of four consecutive days and for 2.5 h on the fifth.Consumption declined progressively in locusts given food only, and those given water only were not observed to drink after the first day of food deprivation. The decline in food consumption on the first day was accounted for by a decrease in the average duration of feeds, which remained constant thereafter. The further decline in consumption over subsequent days was due to a progressive decline in the number of feeds.Although food availability did not slow weight loss relative to locusts given neither food nor water, the availability of water without food did.The proportion of time locomoting increased in all deprivation treatments, but the pattern of change across the five observation days differed markedly between treatments.Locusts given food but no water increased locomotion from 20% of the time budget (the value for controls) to 30% on the first day of deprivation, and by the second day had reached a plateau of approximately 65%.which was maintained until the experiment was terminated on day 5.In contrast, locusts given water but no food approached the 65% level of locomotion on the first day, which was stutistically greater than the 55% observed in those deprived of both food and water. This increase was due both to an increase in the number of locomotion bouts initiated and an increase in the average duration of locomotion bouts. On the second and third days, all deprivation treatments maintained locomotion at around 65%.By day 4, locomotion had decreased to approximately 15% in locusts deprived of both food and water, but not in those deprived of food only or water only.Unlike those given only food, locusts given only water showed a reduction in locomotion of c. 15% on the fifth day.  相似文献

Models of anxiety and fear of novelty were evaluated using correlations and principal component analysis. A total of 84 pigs (LandracexYorkshire) from nine different litters were subjected to a tonic immobility (TI) test at the age of 2.5 weeks, an elevated plus-maze (EPM) at the age of 6 weeks, a light/dark (L/D) exploration test at the age of 7 weeks and an open-field (OF) test at the age of 8 weeks. The first component from the principal component analysis had the highest correlation with number of entries into open arms in the EPM but was also highly correlated to variables from the other three tests confirming a common aversion-related element in the four experimental tests. The second component was negatively correlated with percent entries into and time spent on open arms in the EPM, but positively correlated with the number of entries into closed arms in the same test, number of lines crossed in the OF and time spent in the lit compartment of the L/D test. The last point illustrates a negative relationship between "anxiety" and "activity" in the EPM and OF. To achieve purer measures of fear of novelty and activity in the tests, the components were rotated using the Varimax criterion. The rotated factor pattern demonstrated a simple structure where variables related to "anxiety" or "fear of novelty" (i.e., percent entries into open arms and time spent on open arms of the EPM) had the highest loading on factor 1, whereas variables related to activity (i.e., number of entries into the closed arms in the EPM, number of lines crossed in the OF and time spent in the lit compartment of the L/D test) had the highest loading on factor 2. TI duration loaded more strongly on factor 1 ("fear of novelty") than on factor 2 ("activity"), but did not represent any pure measure of either fear of novelty or activity. In conclusion, all of the test variables were related to one another. Open-arm avoidance represented the purest measure of fear of novelty, whereas entries into closed arms and number of lines crossed in the OF were the purest measures of activity. The EPM appeared to provide the best way to separate the fear of novelty and activity-related elements, indicating that the EPM may be a useful behavioural model of fear of novelty or avoidance in pigs.  相似文献

Many species of game birds would become extinct in their natural habitat without periodical supplementation of wildlife populations with specimens bred on farms. Unfortunately either such birds do not exhibit any specific forms of behaviour which enable survival in natural environment or those forms are inappropriately developed. They include duration of tonic immobility (TI), which is often an anti-predator reaction. Pheasants, quails and partridges were subjected to assessment of the duration of TI and the number of inductions necessary to obtain TI on the 10th, 20th and 35th day of the birds’ lives. In the pheasant and quail, both the frequency of inductions equal to 1 and the duration of TI increased with age. The quails were characterised by the shortest duration of TI and the highest frequency of number of inductions above 1. In the partridges, the average frequency of TI inductions equal to 1 was the highest (more than 70% in every analyzed day). Simultaneously, the average duration of TI was long. This may indicate that these birds may have a better defence mechanism when endangered by a predator.  相似文献

Broiler chickens often make limited use of the free-range area. Range use is influenced by type of shelter available. Range use may possibly be improved by a more gradual transition from the house to the range and by using dark brooders (secluded warm, dark areas in the home pen) that mimic aspects of a broody hen and possibly reduce fearfulness. The aim of this study was to assess effects of dark brooders on fearfulness, free-range use and behaviour later in life. Another aim was to test the chickens’ preference for shelter type and the effects of overhangs outside of the pop holes to provide a gradual transition to the range. Three production rounds, each with 440 Sasso broiler chickens (110/group), were completed. Chicks were housed indoors from days 0 to 25; per round, two groups had access to a dark brooder, whereas the other two groups had conventional IR lamps. Fearfulness was assessed by the open field (OF) and tonic immobility (TI) tests on days 22 to 24 on 25 chicks/group per round. Birds were then moved to four mobile houses from which they could access both grassland with artificial shelter (AS) and short rotation coppice (SRC). Two of the houses had overhangs extending from the pop holes; these were switched between the four houses weekly. Free-range use and behaviour were observed three times daily from Monday to Friday. Dark brooders did not affect results from the OF or TI test, except for jumps in the OF test which tended to occur less often in brooded chicks. Neither dark brooders (34.9% without v. 31.7% with brooder) nor overhangs (32.5% without v. 34.1% with overhangs) influenced the percentage of chickens outside. Chickens showed a clear preference for SRC, range use increased over time in SRC, and more birds ranged farther from the house in SRC. Behaviours of chickens observed outside were mainly influenced by shelter type, age of the birds and distance from the house. Locomotion tended to occur more in the presence of overhangs. Overall, these results could not confirm the hypothesis that dark brooders would decrease fearfulness and thereby increase free-range use. Overhangs also did not improve free-range use, and neither brooders nor overhangs had considerable impact on behaviour of chickens outside. Chickens clearly preferred dense natural vegetation over AS and ranged farther in it, indicating that this type of shelter is more suitable for slow-growing free-range broilers.  相似文献

Breathing pattern in response to maximal exercise was examined in four subjects during a 7-day acclimatisation to a simulated altitude of 4247 m (barometric pressure, PB = 59.5 kPa). Graded exercise tests to exhaustion were performed during normoxia (day 0), and on days 2 and 7 of hypoxia, respectively. Ventilation was significantly augmented in the hypoxic environment, as were both the mean inspiratory flow (VT/TI) and inspiratory duty cycle (TI/TTOT) components of it. VI/TI was increased due to a significant increase in tidal volume (VT) and a corresponding decrease in inspiratory time duration (TI). Throughout a range of exercise ventilation, TI/TTOT was increased due to an apparently greater decrease in expiratory time duration (TE) with respect to TI. In all cases, the relation between VT and TI displayed a typical range 2 behaviour, with evidence of a range 3 occurring at very high ventilatory rates. There was essentially no difference observed in the VT-TI relation during exercise between the normoxic and hypoxic conditions. No significant changes were observed in the breathing pattern in response to exercise within the exposure period (from day 2 to day 7), although there was a discernible tendency to a higher stage 3 plateau by day 7 of altitude exposure.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Anopheles sinensis to Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) was evaluated through exposure to varying concentrations of Bti. Mosquitoes were collected from five field populations of southern and central China (Zhongshan, Hengxian, Wuchang, Xinzhou, and Ruichang) and compared with a standard laboratory strain. The LC50 values were 146.4, 50.4, 57.9, 50.0, 41.6 and 24.6 ng/mL, respectively. Differences in susceptibility to Bti ranging from 1.7 to 5.9-fold compared with the laboratory strain. The Zhongshan strain had the greatest resistance. At low doses, Bti displayed residual effects. Peak mortality occurred from the first to the fourth day. Exposure to low doses increased the duration of larval development and decreased the duration of pupal development, indicating that low doses of Bti have a sublethal effect on their hosts.  相似文献

Whereas a number of measures of fear (duration of the immobility reaction, duration of freezing in the open field and locomotor activity in the open field) showed differences in the predicted direction between pre-experimentally handled and non-handled chicks, significantly fewer distress vocalizations were observed for the relatively more fearful (non-handled) chicks. This finding does not support the general assumption that a monotonic relationship exists between heightened levels of fear and an increased frequency of the distress call. Results are considered in the context of Bronson's (1968) hypothesis that heightened emotionality may inhibit rather than facilitate the expression of a variety of behavioural patterns associated with the avoidance of fear-arousing stimulation.  相似文献

The present study compared the plasma corticosterone concentrations between meat- and layer-type neonatal chicks (Gallus gallus) (1) exposed to isolation-induced stress or (2) injected intracerebroventricularly (ICV) with corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). Both types of neonatal chicks housed in groups were individually introduced to an open field arena and locomotion and distress-induced vocalizations were monitored for 10 min. The responses of the two strains were remarkably different, with meat-type chicks being less active than layer-type chicks. Distress-induced vocalizations were drastically decreased over time in meat-type chicks while they remained high in layer-type chicks throughout the test. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured at the end of the test were significantly higher in layer-type chicks than in meat-type ones. Plasma corticosterone concentrations measured 10 min after the ICV injection of CRF were significantly higher in layer- than meat-type chicks. These results indicate that meat-type chicks have either a greater capability to acclimatize to novel environments, or a blunted HPA axis compared with layer-type chicks.  相似文献

Influence of restricted sensory afferentation in rats forming of defensive reactions was studied by vibrissectomy from 9 to 20 day of postnatal ontogeny. Defensive withdrawal reaction in response to touch from 10 to 18 day, duration of freezing on 20 day, "open field" behavior on 25 day were measured. Intensity of withdrawal reactions, freezing duration, flight reaction and emotionality in "open field" were lower in vibrissectomized rats with comparison to control.  相似文献

The ontogeny of yellow-eyed penguin ( Megadyptes antipodes ) chick behaviour follows the order of development determined by Nice (1962) for several species of birds, and by Spurr (1975) for the Adélie penguin ( Pygoscelis adeliae ). Feeding and comfort behaviours are the first to develop, followed by locomotion and aggressive behaviour.
Active solicitation of food may occur at one day of age. Chicks initially use non-visual cues to mediate begging. After their eyes open on the third or fourth day there is an increase in the use of visual stimuli, and begging occurs most often following adult nest relief. Sibling rivalry is not intense, occurring least during feeding, and in general both chicks are fed at each session.
The chicks are brooded for the first 21–25 days. At sparsely vegetated nest sites overheating may occur after 21 days and down-covered chicks will seek shade and pant in hot weather.
Throughout the 6–7 weeks of the guard phase there is a decrease in the amount of time spent resting in a prone posture, and an increase in exploratory, locomotory behaviour. During the post-guard phase, and until fledging and independence at 15 weeks after hatching, chicks may wander up to 20 m from the nest bowl during exploration, shade-seeking and feeding.
Adults feed only their own chicks, and chicks appear to beg only from their parents. Dense vegetation and long distances between nests tend to restrict contact between adults and chicks from neighbouring nests, and prevent the formation of large chick crèches.  相似文献

The ionizing irradiation of rat fetuses during the last third of intrauterine development increased blood corticosterone level adulthood and decreased the open field locomotion of their adult offsprings of the next first nonirradiated generation. Treatment of the pregnant rats with glucocorticoids also decreased the offspring locomotion. Irradiation of fetuses in the middle of embryogenesis decreased blood corticosterone level in adulthood and shortened the open-field freezing reaction of their adult offsprings of the next first nonirradiated generation. Adrenalectomy of females before mating decreasing the blood corticosterone level had a similar effect on freezing duration of their adult offsprings. Irradiation of the ancestors within the last third of their intrauterine development had no effect on blood corticosterone level of their adult offsprings of the first generation and produced no behavioral alterations in their descendants of the next second nonirradiated generation. Irradiation of the ancestors in the middle of their embryogenesis decreased the stress-induced corticosterone response in their adult offsprings of the first generation and increased rearings and locomotion in their descendants of the next second nonirradiated generation. The data suggest that a single noxious treatment may have behavioral effects throughout two consequent generations of rats. Mother's glucocorticoid hormones may be one of the factors which transmit the effect.  相似文献

The number of inductions and the duration of tonic immobility (TI) was measured in Brown Leghorn hens which were either sham-operated or had total removal of the telencephalon. The overall duration of TI was shorter in sham-operated birds than in decerebrates. The duration of TI decreased significantly in both groups when they were given one trial daily for 7 consecutive days but this was not seen when the birds received 5 trials in rapid succession. The number of inductions necessary to produce TI in decerebrate hens did not differ significantly with repeated testing but sham-operated birds were less susceptible to induction by the 7th trial when tested daily. In contrast, testing the birds in rapid succession had no effect. The possible role of the telencephalon in TI was discussed.  相似文献

The behavioural effects of testosterone propionate (TP), 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and oestradiol benzoate (OB) were investigated in day-old chicks during imprinting sessions to a duck model. TP increased the duration of peeping while inhibiting the following reaction and the twitters. DHT had more or less the same effects while OB induces the reverse behavioural changes. The behavioural effects of hormone injections agree with behavioural sex differences observed in non-injected animals: ♂♂ peep more than ♀♀ which on the other hand produce more twitters. This could be related to sex differences in the hormonal status of the birds at hatching, as it is known that during incubation male chick embryos have higher plasma testosterone levels than ♀♀ of corresponding ages.  相似文献
