Four types of rating scales, nine-point category scales, line marking, magnitude estimation, and a hybrid of the category and line scale, were employed to assess visual, tactile and olfactory characteristics of products by consumers. The scales were compared for their ability to discriminate differences among products, for variability, for reliability, and for ease of use. All methods were able to generate highly significant differences among products. However, a modest advantage for category scales was observed in almost all comparisons.  相似文献

Recent studies comparing magnitude estimation to other scaling methods have been criticized for failure to submit the data to logarithmic transformation before statistical analysis, a procedure which can improve the ability of magnitude estimation scaling to differentiate among products. Data from one of these studies was available for re-analysis, which was conducted both with and without logarithmic transformation of magnitude estimation, category scales and line scales. The ability of magnitude estimation to differentiate among products was improved by log transformation, while the other methods were not. Improvements were associated in pan with reductions in positive skew and improved approximation of the normal distribution. In spite of this improvement, magnitude estimation remained slightly inferior to the other methods especially in the hands of an untrained consumer sample.  相似文献

The relation between a ratio scale obtained by magnitude estimationand a category scale of the odour intensity of 1-butanol wasstudied, together with individual variations in the ratio scale.Series of solutions of butanol in water in small bottles werepresented to a panel for judgement, half using the method ofmagnitude estimation, the other half a category scale. Plotswere made of the category scale against the ratio scale, andthe ratio scales of individual members of the panel were analysed.A power function exponent of 0.48 was found for the panel'sratio scale, with individual values ranging from 0.25 to 0.49.The category scale was curved relative to the ratio scale; variabilityof the magnitude estimates was approximately proportional tothe magnitude estimates; and a small time-order error was found.Odour intensity exhibits the three tested characteristics ofa prothetic continuum, and the variability of individual exponentswas not as great as sometimes suggested.  相似文献

Human-disease etiology can be better understood with phase information about diploid sequences. We present a method for estimating haplotypes, using genotype data from unrelated samples or small nuclear families, that leads to improved accuracy and speed compared to several widely used methods. The method, segmented haplotype estimation and imputation tool (SHAPEIT), scales linearly with the number of haplotypes used in each iteration and can be run efficiently on whole chromosomes.  相似文献

Judges were required to rate the total intensity of NaCl solutions and the sweetness of orange flavored beverages using a variety of unstructured category and line scales. Discrimination errors were noted for each type of scale. No strong differences were observed in discrimination between category and line scales although a 20-point category scale incurred fewer discrimination errors than 9-point category and line scales. Allowing judges to retaste stimuli and review and modify their scores reduced discrimination errors.  相似文献

Differences exist among analysis results of agriculture monitoring and crop production based on remote sensing observations, which are obtained at different spatial scales from multiple remote sensors in same time period, and processed by same algorithms, models or methods. These differences can be mainly quantitatively described from three aspects, i.e. multiple remote sensing observations, crop parameters estimation models, and spatial scale effects of surface parameters. Our research proposed a new method to analyse and correct the differences between multi-source and multi-scale spatial remote sensing surface reflectance datasets, aiming to provide references for further studies in agricultural application with multiple remotely sensed observations from different sources. The new method was constructed on the basis of physical and mathematical properties of multi-source and multi-scale reflectance datasets. Theories of statistics were involved to extract statistical characteristics of multiple surface reflectance datasets, and further quantitatively analyse spatial variations of these characteristics at multiple spatial scales. Then, taking the surface reflectance at small spatial scale as the baseline data, theories of Gaussian distribution were selected for multiple surface reflectance datasets correction based on the above obtained physical characteristics and mathematical distribution properties, and their spatial variations. This proposed method was verified by two sets of multiple satellite images, which were obtained in two experimental fields located in Inner Mongolia and Beijing, China with different degrees of homogeneity of underlying surfaces. Experimental results indicate that differences of surface reflectance datasets at multiple spatial scales could be effectively corrected over non-homogeneous underlying surfaces, which provide database for further multi-source and multi-scale crop growth monitoring and yield prediction, and their corresponding consistency analysis evaluation.  相似文献

Judges were required to rate the total intensity of NaCl solutions using a variety of unstructured category and line scales under a 'rank-rating' protocol and a traditional protocol that did not allow retasting or the reviewing of scores. The various scales and protocols induced two types of scaling errors. The first type was named a different-stimulus error. This involved a judge rating a stronger stimulus as equal to or less than a weaker stimulus. The second type was named a same-stimulus error. This involved a judge giving different ratings to two stimuli of equal concentration. For all scales, judges made a higher proportion of same-stimulus errors than different-stimulus errors. 'Rank-rating' only reduced the proportion of different-stimulus errors. It was hypothesized that a category scale with fewer categories would induce a higher level of different-stimulus errors but lower level of same-stimulus errors. These trends were noted but not always significantly. For line scales, the equivalent hypotheses regarding line length were either weak or not supported. It would appear that increasing the length of a line scale is not always equivalent to increasing the number of categories in a category scale.  相似文献

光合有效辐射吸收比率(FPAR)是反映植被生长过程的重要生理参数,是陆地生态系统模型的关键参数,是反映全球气候变化的重要因子。基于遥感的FPAR估算方法是获取区域乃至全球尺度FPAR的有效方法。目前,主要形成了植被指数法和机理法两类方法,植被指数法是建立FPAR与植被指数的经验统计模型,简单、计算效率高;机理法则从物理模型上进行FPAR的求解与反演,机理明晰、可行性强。然而,由于FPAR本身的复杂性以及环境因素、遥感数据质量的影响,导致了估算方法面临诸多不确定性问题。为了解决这些不确定性问题以及满足生态过程深入研究的需求,将进一步注重FPAR的机理研究、先验知识的获取与积累,构建长时间序列FPAR以及高时空的FPAR算法研究。  相似文献

The application of sensory methodology for measuring deodorizing effect of an air conditioner equipped with electric plasma was introduced. Deodorizing effect was measured using chemical and sensory methods at different time (0, 30 and 60 min) and mode (control, blowing and cooling) of an air conditioner. Smoke from a roll of cigarette in a closed room was used as a source of odor and the concentrations of acetic acid and ammonia were measured as odorous chemical components. As one of the sensory methods triangle test was used and as a first step to obtain deodorizing effects by triangle test, the threshold of each panelist was obtained as the log dilution ratio of odor concentration at which the difference from odorless air was detected. The odor concentration at each time and mode was calculated using the threshold of the panel and the deodorizing effect was obtained on the basis of the odor concentration. In addition to a triangle test, scaling methods such as category scaling or magnitude estimation were used to measure deodorizing effect of an air conditioner. Deodorizing effects by scaling methods were calculated based on odor intensity with time at each mode. The regression analysis was done between the efficacy of deodorizing effect by sensory test and those by acetic acid and ammonia, the R2 values of the regression equations for triangle test, category scale, and magnitude estimation were 0.84, 0.72 and 0.69, respectively. Deodorizing effect by triangle test explained the decrease of acetic acid and ammonia better than those by category scaling or magnitude estimation while high cost and time consuming labor involved in triangle tests reduced the merit. The results of this study demonstrated that various sensory methods could be used to measure deodorizing effect of air conditioners and further researches on fast and reliable methods are needed to establish the official procedures.  相似文献

A collaborative study of twenty-three laboratories was conducted to compare the relative effectiveness of three scales: two forms of magnitude estimation scaling and one form of a category scale in the measurement of hedonic response to a controlled stimulus. Responses from 553 individual judges show that all scales yield hedonic measurements that are very similar in both direction and magnitude of difference between the stimuli. No scale showed any clear superiority in reliability, precision, or discrimination. Selection of a scale must be based on considerations other than the simple form of response.  相似文献

For rigid body POSE estimation, any relative movement of the tracking markers on a segment is often referred to as an artefact; however this may be an important part of the signal within breast biomechanics. This study aimed to quantify differences in breast range of motion when calculated relative to the torso segment using either direct or segment optimised POSE estimation algorithms. Markers on the torso and right nipple were tracked using infrared cameras (200 Hz) during five running gait cycles in three breast support conditions (no bra, everyday bra and sports bra). Multiplanar breast range of motion was calculated relative to the torso segment using two POSE estimation algorithms. First, the torso segment was defined using direct POSE estimation (direct). Second, while standing stationary in the anatomical position; the positional data of the torso markers were used to construct the torso using segment optimised POSE estimation (optimised). The torso segment length defined using direct POSE estimation changed significantly by 3.4 cm compared to that of the segment optimisation POSE estimation in the no bra condition. Subsequently, superioinferior breast range of motion was significantly greater (p<0.017) when calculated using direct POSE estimation, within each of the three breast support conditions. Segment optimisation POSE estimation is recommended to minimise any differences in breast motion associated with intra segment deformation between physical activity types. However, either algorithm is recommended when evaluating different breast support garments, as a correctly fitted bra does not cause the torso markers to move relative to each other.  相似文献

Two popular methods of benthic cover estimation (the point intercept technique with two sets of position points, and digital interactive color segmentation) were compared with an alternative method of digital cover estimation using Bezier curves as a tool for outlining the objects on an images and AutoCAD® software for the final evaluation of abundance. The comparison was done using still video images obtained from two 10-m transects on subtidal rocks off the Rimsky-Korsakov islands in the Sea of Japan (Russia). Ten rectangular sectors (1×0.4 m each) selected randomly within both video transects were analyzed. One-way ANOVA for repeated measurements was used to test the differences between methods. The point intercept technique differed significantly from both methods of digital estimation and had an essential positive bias. The Tukey multiple comparison test revealed the differences among digital estimation methods in the species, which have the complicated color with many contrast spots. The proposed approach using Bezier curves has an advantage over the interactive color segmentation if the objects under selection are lit at different levels or have a contrast coloration or are hidden by canopy organisms. Besides, estimation of cover in the field of AutoCAD® software is more precise and takes less time than that obtained using a scaled grid, available for automatically segmented species. The results showed that digital cover estimation using Bezier curves and AutoCAD® software is a convenient method for analyzing benthic samples at large spatial scales.  相似文献

The effect of a single bout of oral glucose administration on the blood glucose level during three hours of observation was studied at rest in 6 physical education students and in 6 elite walkers with different physical condition. The influence of the physical condition on the observed data was also investigated. The evaluation of the glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was first built on a mathematical model and it was developed by a new method. The point of the brand-new method is the interrelationship between the relative percentage differences of blood glucose values, which is analysed as a function of time. The data of the new method better reflect the alterations of blood glucose regulation after oral administration of glucose. The new method contributes to the more accurate analysis of OGTT curves for beside estimation of the absolute values, it considers the relative differences, thus a thorough examination of the glucose metabolism can be carried out. It opens new potentialities in the analysis of the individual, absorptive, hormonal and fitness-dependent effects of different carbohydrates that are used abundantly by athletes.  相似文献

在RS技术支持下,采用分辨率为10m的SPOT-5遥感影像为数据源,分别应用Haar、Morlet、Mexican Hat 3种基小波,对南京市江北城郊、主城区和东南城郊3种不同景观类型进行了特征尺度研究。结果表明,Modet基小波最适于进行城市景观的特征尺度检测,Mexican Hat基小波对粒级嵌套结构检测效果稍差,而Haar基小波不适于对连续型数据源的景观进行特征尺度检测。Morlet基小波的一维小波分析结果表明,南京市江北城郊和东南城郊都存在1个对应于各自农田斑块平均粒径的特征尺度,分别为362m和446m,而主城区则检测出存在3个特征尺度,即:292、835m和2200m,分别对应于建筑小区、小型街区和大型街区的平均粒径,显示主城区存在具有等级结构特征的“建筑小区-小型街区-大型街区”的粒级嵌套结构,揭示了城区具有比城郊复杂得多的粒级结构特征。  相似文献

Intracellular calcium release is a prime example for the role of stochastic effects in cellular systems. Recent models consist of deterministic reaction-diffusion equations coupled to stochastic transitions of calcium channels. The resulting dynamics is of multiple time and spatial scales, which complicates far-reaching computer simulations. In this article, we introduce a novel hybrid scheme that is especially tailored to accurately trace events with essential stochastic variations, while deterministic concentration variables are efficiently and accurately traced at the same time. We use finite elements to efficiently resolve the extreme spatial gradients of concentration variables close to a channel. We describe the algorithmic approach and we demonstrate its efficiency compared to conventional methods. Our single-channel model matches experimental data and results in intriguing dynamics if calcium is used as charge carrier. Random openings of the channel accumulate in bursts of calcium blips that may be central for the understanding of cellular calcium dynamics.  相似文献

Neurons communicate by releasing neurotransmitters that are stored in intracellular vesicular compartments. PC12 cells are frequently used as a model secretory cell line that is described to have two subpools of vesicles: small clear vesicles and dense core vesicles. We measured transmitter molecules released from vesicles in NGF-differentiated PC12 cells using carbon-fiber amperometry, and relative diameters of individual vesicles using electron microscopy. Both amperometry and electron micrograph data were analyzed by statistical and machine learning methods for Gaussian mixture models. An electron microscopy size correction algorithm was used to predict and correct for observation bias of vesicle size due to tangential slices through some vesicles. Expectation maximization algorithms were used to perform maximum likelihood estimation for the Gaussian parameters of different populations of vesicles, and were shown to be better than histogram and cumulative distribution function methods for analyzing mixed populations. The Bayesian information criterion was used to determine the most likely number of vesicle subpools observed in the amperometric and electron microscopy data. From this analysis, we show that there are three major subpools, not two, of vesicles stored and released from PC12 cells. The three subpools of vesicles include small clear vesicles and two subpools of dense core vesicles, a small and a large dense core vesicle subpool. Using PC12 cells stably transfected with short-hairpin RNA targeted to synaptotagmin I, an exocytotic Ca2+ sensor, we show that the presence and release of the small dense core vesicle subpool is dependent on synaptotagmin I. Furthermore, synaptotagmin I also plays a role in the formation and/or maintenance of the small dense core vesicle subpool in PC12 cells.  相似文献

The labeled magnitude scale (LMS) is a verbally anchored quasi-logarithmically spaced response scale with properties similar to magnitude estimation. Three experiments examined whether the LMS showed context effects similar to those found with magnitude estimation and category scales. Two versions of the LMS were used, one anchored at the high end to the strongest imaginable sweetness and the other to the strongest imaginable oral sensation. In a simple contrast experiment, subjects judged the sweetness of a 10% sucrose fruit beverage in the context of a less sweet (5%) beverage or a more sweet (20%) beverage. Consistent with previous literature, the sweetness was judged more intense in the low context and less intense in the high context, for all scaling methods. In a second experiment, this effect persisted (although was smaller) when the contextual item preceded the to-be-rated item, a so-called 'reversed-pair' design. Once again, the effect was highly significant for all scaling methods. In a third experiment, a range effect was examined using wide and narrow ranges of concentration. Psychophysical functions were flatter in a wide context and steeper in a narrow context, consistent with previous observations on range-mapping bias. This result was obtained for all scales. In three common contextual effects, the labeled magnitude scale behaved similarly to other scaling procedures. Its application to comparisons across individuals may be limited if those individuals have different experiential contexts within which they make their judgements.  相似文献

Using human activity and stream biota data collected from 160 small (600–3000 ha) watersheds in rural southwestern Ontario, we determined the relative ability of three commonly used methods of describing fish and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages (i.e., metrics, presence/absence, and relative abundance) to assess the biological effects of reach and basin scale human activity. Analyses indicated that benthic macroinvertebrate presence/absence was more strongly correlated with human activity at both reach and basin scales than fish presence/absence, benthic macroinvertebrate or fish relative abundance, and metrics derived from benthic macroinvertebrates or fish data. However, sites exhibiting lower levels of human activity were, in some cases, better differentiated by relative abundance. The use of metrics did not provide any additional information regarding the effects of human activities and regularly appeared to underestimate differences between moderately exposed sites and sites exposed to low or very high levels of human activity. Tests for redundancy between fish and benthic macroinvertebrates indicated that they respond differently to the same type and extent of human activity suggesting that the assemblages are sensitive to different stressors emanating from the same activities. There was also a disparity between assemblages with regards to which scale they were most strongly associated as fish were more associated with human activities at the basin scale whereas benthic invertebrates were most strongly associated with the activities at the reach scale. Finally, there was no apparent advantage to describing human activities at multiple scales as predicted basin scores were highly correlated among scales, a finding that may be attributable to the homogeneity of rural environments. Similar studies need to be conducted for a broader spectrum of human activities across a larger geographic extent to determine if these findings are widely applicable.  相似文献
