The morphology and innervation of the six oculomotor muscles in the gobiid fishTridentiger trigonocephalus are described. Every rectus muscle is composed of two types of muscle fibres. Muscles attach onto the cartilaginous or fibrous sclerotica. Oblique muscles attach onto the ethmoidal plate; recti muscles attach onto the parasphenoid or a thick fibrous membrane. There is no myodome. The common oculomotor nerve is composed of four bundles, the trochlear and the externus of two. The two kinds of fibres of the lateral rectus and the two distinct bundles of the nerve VI suggest a possible homology between this muscle in fishes and the lateral rectus+retractor bulbi in mammals.  相似文献

A modified Sihler's stain technique was used to visualize the branching patterns of oculomotor and trochlear nerves. The levator palpebrae, superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus, inferior oblique, superior oblique and tensor trochlea muscles were isolated from the eyes of normal rabbits and processed using modified Sihler's technique. The distributions and terminal ramifications of the oculomotor and trochlear nerves were observed. Two distinct divisions and terminal branches of the oculomotor nerve were shown in detail together with the trochlear nerve distribution. The application of Sihler's technique enables researchers to trace nerve branching within relatively transparent muscles, whereas the nerve fibers are counterstained and clearly visible. This technique could be useful for detailed studies of the motor control of extraocular muscles.  相似文献

Extraocular muscle motoneurones were localised in the oculomotor nucleus (ON), trochlear nucleus (TN) and abducens nucleus (AN) in the marmoset brain using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrograde labelling technique. HRP pellets injected into individual extraocular muscles revealed one or more groups of labelled neurones occupying discrete loci within these nuclei. Relatively little overlap of motoneurone pools was observed, except in the case of the inferior oblique and superior rectus muscles. Injections of HRP into the medial rectus muscle revealed three separate populations of labelled cells in the ipsilateral ON. Motoneurones innervating the inferior rectus muscle were mainly localised in the lateral somatic cell column of the ipsilateral ON. A second smaller grouping was observed in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. The inferior oblique muscle motoneurones were localised in the ipsilateral medial somatic cell column intermingled with motoneurones supplying the superior rectus muscle of the opposite eye. The superior oblique muscle motoneurones occupied the entire TN and the lateral rectus muscle motoneurones the AN. It was concluded that the organisation of nuclei and subnuclei responsible for controlling the extraocular muscles in the marmoset is broadly similar to that of other primates.  相似文献

A comparative study of the quantitative data of the frog extraocular muscles and the cranial nerves that innervate them was performed. Oculorotatory muscles contain muscle fibres of at least 4 types which are arranged in heterogeneous layers. The zonal arrangement of the muscles does not occur on the cross-sections in the vicinity of muscle insertions. In these regions only two muscle fibre types are present and the total number of fibres is smaller by 70% than in the central region of the muscle. Most numerous are muscle fibres in the rectus inferior muscle, while the smallest number of fibres is found in rectus interior muscle. Three distinct types of nerve fibres are distinguished according to the following criteria: occurrence and thickness of myelin sheath, fibre diameter and ratio "g". The fibres with thin myelin sheaths indicate small diameters (1-5--6- mum) and their ratio "g" equals 0-82 +/- 0-08. They constitute about 30% of the myelinated fibres in the nerve supply of the oculorotatory muscles and about 14% in the supply of the retractor bulbi muscle. Both the value of the ratio "g" and a greater number of these fibres in the nerve supply of the muscles that contain slow contracting muscle fibres indicate that they are rather slow conducting nerve fibres. The range of the diameters of the fibres with thick myelin sheaths is greater (3-5--13-5 mum) and their "g" equals 0-66 +/- 0-06. These fibres constitute about 70% of the myelinated ones in the nerve supply of the oculorotatory muscles and 86% in the supply of the retractor bulbi muscles. The value of the ratio "g" in these fibres indicates that they are fast contracting ones. The smallest diameters are found in the myelinated fibres (0-5--1-7 mum). These fibres occur frequently in all the examined nerves; they constitute 36--47% of the total number of all the nerve fibres. The frog extraocular muscles are characterized by an abundal nerve supply which is reflected in the low innervation ratio (1:4--1:5). On the distal cross-section of nerves the number of nerve fibres is greater than on the proximal ones. Ganglionic neurons occur sporadically around the nerves; in the nerve III synaptic contacts between two neurons were observed.  相似文献

In the medial dorsolateral portion of the semilunar ganglion of curarized and anaesthetized lambs a cellular pool has been identified which contains the perikarya of the first-order neurons of the eye muscle proprioception. Responses to moderate manual stretch of individual eye muscles were recorded by means of tungsten microelectrodes, from single units of the ganglion. They were of the type induced by muscle spindle excitation. Such responses showed a somatotopic localization. The superior rectus and the superior oblique muscles were represented in the most dorsal layers of the ganglion, while the inferior rectus and the inferior oblique muscles projected on the most ventral portion of the pool. The medial and the lateral recti were represented in the medial and lateral parts and occasionally wedged themselves between the cells innervating the superior and the inferior muscles. Thus a somatotopic arrangement of the eye muscle proprioception has been demonstrated for the first time in the semilunar ganglion.  相似文献

Unit activity was recorded extracellularly from lamb's nucleus principalis and pars oralis of trigeminal nuclear complex following moderate manual stretching of individual extraocular muscles. The oral portion of the spinal trigeminal nucleus and the main sensory nucleus have been investigated by systematic exploration of the second-order neurons of the eye muscle proprioception. Such responses were somatotopically organized. In particular, each single extraocular muscle was represented along the main dorso-ventral axis in this manner: superior oblique and superior rectus in a dorsal layer; inferior rectus and inferior oblique in an intermediate layer, while the medial rectus and the lateral rectus were represented more ventrally. In a few experiments this representation was not observed, due to intermingling of the units. The topographic organization of eye muscle proprioception in the trigeminal nuclear complex described above closely corresponds to that reported by previous authors in the Gasser ganglion.  相似文献

1. The reflex effect of direct mechanical stimulation of the exposed ampulla of the horizontal canal has been graphically recorded for each of the six extrinsic muscles of the eyeball. 2. Stimulation of a horizontal ampulla evokes a strong contraction of the homolateral rectus internus and of the contralateral rectus externus; at the same time the homolateral rectus externus and the contralateral rectus internus relax. 3. A single mechanical stimulus applied to the horizontal ampulla is sometimes followed by a nystagmus resulting from a series of rhythmic contractions of the externus and internus muscles. 4. Excitation of a horizontal ampulla gives rise to weak contractions of the superior and inferior recti and of the two oblique muscles of both eyes, simultaneously with the stronger contractions of the externus and internus respectively. 5. It is pointed out that the small simultaneous contractions of the four muscles just mentioned provide a virtual axis upon which the eyeball rotates. In other words these four act as fixation muscles. 6. It is suggested that some of the abnormal responses to horizontal rotation, seen in clinical cases, are due to the inaction of one or more of the fixation muscles.  相似文献

The medial branch (Med) of the hypoglossal nerve innervates the tongue protrudor muscles, whereas the lateral branch (Lat) innervates tongue retractor muscles. Our previous finding that pharyngeal airflow increased during either selective Med stimulation or whole hypoglossal nerve (WHL) stimulation (coactivation of protrudor and retractor muscles) led us to examine how WHL, Med, or Lat stimulation affected tongue movements and nasopharyngeal (NP) and oropharyngeal (OP) airway volume. Electrical stimulation of either WHL, Med, or Lat nerves was performed in anesthetized, tracheotomized rats while magnetic resonance images of the NP and OP were acquired (slice thickness 0.5 mm, in-plane resolution 0.25 mm). NP and OP volume was greater during WHL and Med stimulation vs. no stimulation (P < 0.05). Ventral tongue depression (measured in the midsagittal images) and OP volume were greater during Med stimulation than during WHL stimulation (P < 0.05). Lat stimulation did not alter NP volume (P = 0.39). Our finding that either WHL or Med stimulation dilates the NP and OP airways sheds new light on the control of pharyngeal airway caliber by extrinsic tongue muscles and may lead to new treatments for patients with obstructive sleep apnea.  相似文献

Synopsis In the butterflyfishChaetodon trifasciatus, the labyrinth is characterized by its elevated form and especially the size of the vertical canals, the almost circular form of the horizontal canal and its posterior opening not directly in the utriculus but in the common pillar of the two vertical canals. There is an almost complete separation between utriculus and sacculus which are only linked by a virtual pore. The lagena, which is medially situated to the posterior part of the sacculus, is separated from it by an incomplete vertical wall. There are two maculae neglectae, the anterior macula being situated in the pore separating utriculus from sacculus and filling this pore, the posterior in a gutter of the floor of the utriculus. A long and narrow endolymphatic canal, originating from the sacculus close to the communication with the utriculus, follows the common pillar of the two vertical canals and widens into an endolymphatic sac at the top of the membranous labyrinth. The innervation of the labyrinth is made by the acoustic ganglion, which is connected to the brain by two roots and elongated into three parts: the anterior part innervates the anterior and horizontal cristae and the utricular and saccular maculae; the middle part innervates the macula sacculae and the macula neglecta 1; the posterior part innervates the macula neglecta II, the macula lagenae and the posterior crista. The important size of the vertical canals and the almost circular form of the horizontal canal may reflect very precise locomotory aptitudes.  相似文献

The orbit of the Upper Devonian piscine osteolepipod Eusthenopteron foordi has a distinct endocranial depression postero-ventrally at the base of the basipterygoid process and lateral to the hypophysis. Compared with what is known of extant osteolepipods, this depression is a myodomus retractricis bulbi. From the evidence of this myodome for attachment of retractor bulbi musculature, the hypothesis is presented that Eusthenopteron foordi had a palpebra tertia and, as a corollary, that it also had a musculus levator bulbi, a glandula palpebrae tertiae and a ductus nasolacrimalis. These annexal eye structures would have made it possible for this pulmonate fish to leave the water to bask without being dazzled by sunlight.  相似文献

Some morphological, physiological, and pharmacological properties of the retractor bulbi muscle of the frog were tested. The enzyme-histochemical investigation shows that the retractor bulbi muscle contains twitch muscle fibres only. Two types of twitch muscle fibres, which are especially different in their diameter and in the content of mitochondria, build the muscle in an irregular arrangement; tonic muscle fibres were not observed. On the average, the isolated retractor bulbi muscle has at room temperature a contraction time of 26 ms, a half-relaxation time of 28 ms, a fusion frequency of 75 stimuli/s, and a twitch-tetanus ratio of 0.28. The fatigability of this muscle is higher than in oculorotatory eye muscles but lower than in skeletal muscles of the frog. An increase of the extracellular K+-concentration elicits in retractor bulbi muscles a quickly transient contracture; the mechanical threshold of the muscle fibres is found in a range between 20 and 25 mM K+ in Ringer solution. Similar short-lasting contractures, which are probably caused by twitch fibres, rich in mitochondria, are also evoked by application of depolarizing drugs like acetylcholine. The properties of the retractor bulbi muscle are compared with those of the sartorius muscle of the frog, which likewise contains twitch muscle fibres only.  相似文献

In Bathynomus doederleini all of the cardioarterial valves located at the origin of the lateral arteries are dilated by impulses of lateral cardiac nerves. Tactile stimuli applied to sensillar setae depress impulse activities of the 1st and 5th lateral cardiac nerves. The 1st lateral cardiac nerve controls the valve of the lateral artery which runs to the walking-legs and viscera. The 5th lateral cardiac nerve controls the valve of the lateral artery which runs to the swimmeret muscles. The response indicates that tactile receptor reflexes bring about decreased haemolymph flow to the organs. Augmented swimmeret movements were always accompanied by an increased firing rate in the 5th lateral cardiac nerve. Artificial full protraction of swimmerets simultaneously induced excitation of the 5th lateral cardiac nerve and inhibition of the 1st lateral cardiac nerve. The excitation corresponds to an increase in haemolymph flow to the swimmerets, and the inhibition a decrease in haemolymph flow to walking-legs and viscera. Three kinds of mechanoproprioceptors which were activated by swimmeret movements were found. Two of the mechanoproprioceptors are located at the base of the basipodite. The other mechanoproprioceptor supplies processes to a nerve to the retractor muscles. Vertebrate eye movements depend on the co‐ordinated function of six extraocular muscles that are innervated by the oculomotor, trochlear, and abducens nerves. Here, we show that the diffusible factors, stromal cell‐derived factor‐1 (SDF‐1) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), guide the development of these axon projections. SDF‐1 is expressed in the mesenchyme around the oculomotor nerve exit point, and oculomotor axons fail to exit the neuroepithelium in mice mutant for the SDF‐1 receptor CXCR4. Both SDF‐1 and HGF are expressed in or around the ventral and dorsal oblique muscles, which are distal targets for the oculomotor and trochlear nerves, respectively, as well as in the muscles which are later targets for oculomotor axon branches. We find that in vitro SDF‐1 and HGF promote the growth of oculomotor and trochlear axons, whereas SDF‐1 also chemoattracts oculomotor axons. Oculomotor neurons show increased branching in the presence of SDF‐1 and HGF singly or together. HGF promotes the growth of trochlear axons more than that of oculomotor axons. Taken together, these data point to a role for both SDF‐1 and HGF in extraocular nerve projections and indicate that SDF‐1 functions specifically in the development of the oculomotor nerve, including oculomotor axon branch formation to secondary muscle targets. We describe the anatomy of the nerves that project from the central nervous system (CNS) to the pro‐ and mesothoracic segments and the cephalopharyngeal skeleton (CPS) for third instar Calliphora larvae. Due to the complex branching pattern we introduce a nomenclature that labels side branches of first and second order. Two fine nerves that were not yet described are briefly introduced. One paired nerve projects to the ventral arms (VAs) of the CPS. The second, an unpaired nerve, projects to the ventral surface of the cibarial part of the esophagus (ES). Both nerves were tentatively labeled after the structures they innervate. The antennal nerve (AN) innervates the olfactory dorsal organ (DO). It contains motor pathways that project through the frontal connectives (FC) to the frontal nerve (FN) and innervate the cibarial dilator muscles (CDM) which mediate food ingestion. The maxillary nerve (MN) innervates the sensory terminal organ (TO), ventral organ (VO), and labial organ (LO) and comprises the motor pathways to the mouth hook (MH) elevator, MH depressor, and the labial retractor (LR) which opens the mouth cavity. An anastomosis of unknown function exists between the AN and MN. The prothoracic accessory nerve (PaN) innervates a dorsal protractor muscle of the CPS and sends side branches to the aorta and the bolwig organ (BO) (stemmata). In its further course, this nerve merges with the prothoracic nerve (PN). The architecture of the PN is extremely complex. It innervates a set of accessory pharyngeal muscles attached to the CPS and the body wall musculature of the prothorax. Several anastomoses exist between side branches of this nerve which were shown to contain motor pathways. Abstract A compilation of newly published information on the innervation of the basicranial muscle in the living tufttail Latimeria chalumnae and data obtained from other craniates, extant as well as extinct, suggest that the coelacanthiform basicranial musculature and the nerve supply which pertains to it are trimetameric in character rather than monometameric, as usually reported. This result supports the available data on the basic composition of the head of craniate animals and gives no support to a recently suggested homology between the tufttail basicranial muscles and the tetrapod retractor bulbi musculature.  相似文献

An objective classification for abdominoplasty based on myoaponeurotic deformities is described. Types A, B, C, and D correspond to different myoaponeurotic deformities. Patients with type A display rectus diastasis secondary to pregnancy, and plication of the anterior rectus sheath is indicated. Patients with type B present with laxity of the lateral and inferior areas of the abdominal wall after approximation of the anterior rectus sheaths. An L-shaped plication of the external oblique aponeurosis is performed in addition to the correction of rectus diastasis. Patients with type C are those whose rectus muscles are laterally inserted on the costal margins. Release and undermining of the rectus muscles from their posterior sheath and advancement of these muscles, attached to the anterior sheath, is the procedure of choice in these cases. Patients with type D display a poor waistline definition; external oblique muscle rotation associated with plication of the anterior rectus sheath is the procedure used to correct this deformity. Eighty-eight patients who underwent abdominoplasty were reviewed, and the incidence of each deformity was determined on this population. This study presents a practical classification that permits the plastic surgeon to critically evaluate which is the best option to correct abdominal deformities considering specific areas of myoaponeurotic weakness.  相似文献

The findings of the previous study (1976) involving orbital operations in 12 cats have been confirmed in this study involving intracranial operations in 20 more cats. The perikarya of origin of afferent fibres from feline extra-ocular msucles have been clearly localised to the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus. The functional subdivision in the nucleus that was noted earlier has been reaffirmed. Thus the caudal or pontine part was the location of cell bodies from the lateral rectus muscle, the intermediate part contained those from the superior oblique, while the other muscles were represented by cell bodies in the rostral part, there being some degree of overlap in the last two zones. In every instance the representation was shown to be bilateral and the total ratio of cellular representation was in the region of 4:1 (ipsilateral-contralateral). The peripheral pathway of the proprioceptive fibres has been shown to be exclusively along the oculomotor, trochlear and abducent nerves which are therefore sensorimotor.  相似文献
