A comprehensive investigation of the Early Jurassic stratigraphical palynology of the Lusitanian Basin in western Portugal was undertaken, with most emphasis placed on dinoflagellate cysts. A total of 214 samples from an upper Sinemurian to upper Toarcian composite section based on six successions were examined. The Sinemurian material examined was barren of dinoflagellate cysts; however, the Pliensbachian and Toarcian successions are characterised by relatively low diversities where Luehndea spinosa, Mancodinium semitabulatum, Mendicodinium microscabratum, Nannoceratopsis gracilis, Nannoceratopsis senex, and Scriniocassis priscus are relatively common and biostratigraphically significant. Luehndea spinosa dominates the lowermost Toarcian (Dactylioceras polymorphum ammonite Biozone), and is an index species. At the base of the Hildaites levisoni ammonite Biozone, the effects of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) caused Luehndea spinosa to become extinct. At the same time, dinoflagellate cyst abundance and diversity markedly decreased. After the T-OAE, during the middle and late Toarcian, phytoplankton recovery was prolonged and slow in the Lusitanian Basin. The Luehndea spinosa and Mendicodinium microscabratum dinoflagellate cyst biozones are defined, both of which are subdivided into two dinoflagellate cyst subbiozones.  相似文献

The culture CCMP 1383, obtained from sea-ice brine collected in McMurdo Sound (Ross Sea, Antarctica), is a small gymnodinioid dinoflagellate. This species is very abundant in the upper land-fast sea ice, where it can both grow and overwinter as a spiny encysted stage. The motile vegetative stage and the cyst produced in the culture were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron micrscopy (TEM). The amphiesma of the vegetative cells is constituted by thin vesicles that are organized into nine latitudinal series of plates: three in the epitheca, two in the cingulum, and four in the hypotheca. The same tabulation is reflected in the cyst wall by acicular processes arising from the center of paraplates, with the exception of the paracingulum, in which acicular processess are absent. On the basis of the peculiar plate pattern of this dinoflagellate, we establish the new genus Polarella and the new species Polarella glacialis (family Suessiaceae, order Suessiales). This species has a remarkable similarity with fossil Suessiaceae cysts dating back to the Triassic and Jurassic and represents, up to now, the only extant member of the subfamily Suessiaceae. Phylogenetic analysis based on the small-subunit ribosomal RNA gene confirmed the placement of this species in the order Suessiales and its close relationship with the genus Symbiodinium Freudenthal.  相似文献

Abstract

Teleosauroids were a clade of semi-marine crocodylomorphs that attained near-global distribution during the Jurassic Period. They were particularly common during the Toarcian (Early Jurassic) and are well documented throughout the UK and Germany. However, Toarcian teleosauroids discovered in Luxembourg have been little studied and rarely discussed in the scientific literature. Here we present a comprehensive catalogue of Luxembourg thalattosuchian specimens, including nine teleosauroids (all from the Toarcian) and five Thalattosuchia indeterminate (four from the Toarcian and one from the Bajocian), many of which are noted in the literature for the first time. We describe these specimens and identify two distinct genera (Steneosaurus and Platysuchus) as present in the sample as well as three, or possibly four, distinct species. This represents a high diversity of teleosauroid taxa (both common and rare forms) from the Toarcian rarely seen elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

The significant mass extinction attributed to the Early Toarcian anoxic event had a severe impact on the phylum Brachiopoda. Beyond a serious decrease of species diversity, the extinction of the orders Spiriferidina and Athyridida is connected with this episode. The order Athyridida was represented by the family Koninckinidae in the Early Jurassic. The stratigraphical and geographical distribution of the three Early Jurassic koninckinid genera ( Koninckella, Koninckodonta, Amphiclinodonta ) shows a definite radiative pattern. The number of their nominal species increased from 2 to 17 from the Sinemurian to Early Toarcian; in the same time interval, their area increased from the Alpine region to the whole Mediterranean and the NW-European domains. This radiative evolution can be explained as the result of different factors: (1) morphological adaptation to muddy bottoms, (2) fundamental changes in the current pattern in the Tethys/Laurasian Seaway, and, possibly, (3) utilization of methane-based chemosynthesis as alternative food source. The radiation of koninckinids, leading from the cryptic habitats of the Tethyan rocky floors to the extensive muddy bottoms of the open European shelves, was abruptly terminated by the anoxic event in the Early Toarcian Falciferum Zone. The main causes of the extinction might be: (1) the excessive warming of Tethyan deep waters by thermohaline circulation, (2) the anoxic event, which was not survived by the spire-bearers, handicapped by their stiff, calcareous spiralia. Abstract: Twenty‐five gastropod taxa are reported from the Early Jurassic (Hettangian to Toarcian) of England. Of these, 14 are identified to species level, and the remaining 11 are treated in open nomenclature. One genus (Lensataphrus) and six species are introduced as new. The new species are Lensataphrus tatei, Lensataphrus tenuis, Tricarilda toddi, Cylindrobullina dorsetensis, Cylindrobullina ventricosa and Consobrinella greeni. The following new combinations are introduced: Cassianopsis hebertana (d’Orbigny, 1852) for Neritopsis hebertana; Cryptaulax abscisum (Terquem and Piette, 1868) for Cerithium abscisum; and Cylindrobullina avena (Terquem, 1855) for Striactaeonina avena. Most of the genera and some of the species are also known from Central Europe (Germany and France). Typical vetigastropod genera that are present in England and Central Europe are Colpomphalus, Costataphrus, Ooliticia, Eucycloscala and Eucycloidea. The caenogastropod genera Levipleura and Cryptaulax are present in both regions, as are the heterobranchs Tricarilda and Cylindrobullina. The heterobranch genus Consobrinella is reported from England for the first time. Gastropods seem to follow the diversity trends of other marine invertebrates during the Early Jurassic. They diversify until the Late Pliensbachian but decrease sharply in number around the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary. This may reflect both regional anoxia and a global mass extinction event in the Early Toarcian.  相似文献

The integration of palynological and geochemical data from three lower Toarcian successions in central Italy reveals that the composition of organic-walled phytoplankton assemblages were strongly affected by palaeoecological conditions related to bituminous sedimentation which accompanied the global anoxic event. The marked compositional variations of dinoflagellate cysts and prasinophytes, together with geochemical variations, have been linked to changes in surface water habitats during the lower Toarcian transgression. On the basis of the relationships between total organic carbon (TOC) and marine palynomorph assemblage composition, the lower Toarcian evolution of the Umbria-Marche Basin, central Italy, has been divided into four phases. Total organic carbon values rose significantly during the early Toarcian (Lower-middle Dactylioceras tenuicostatum ammonite Zone), and this can be linked to certain dinoflagellate cyst datums, for example the temporary disappearance of Mancodinium semitabulatum and the extinction of Luehndea spinosa. The presence of Umbriadinium mediterraneense and Valvaeodinium spp. accompany these moderately high TOC values. Subsequently, TOC levels increased to over 2% and prasinophytes became abundant in the Middle-upper D. tenuicostatum ammonite Zone. Mancodinium semitabulatum reappeared when TOC values eventually decreased in the Upper D. tenuicostatum ammonite Zone. This analysis has allowed the different sunlight requirements and life strategies of the early Toarcian Tethyan dinoflagellates to be modelled. Due to the cosmopolitan nature of the early Toarcian anoxic event, the principal marine palynological signals observed have been interpreted as sequence stratigraphical and palaeoecological indices. The Transgressive Systems Tract (TST) is accompanied by an increase in dinoflagellate cyst species diversity and a decrease in abundance. The succeeding maximum flooding surface (mfs) corresponds with a prasinophyte acme. During the Highstand Systems Tract (HST), the phytoplankton shows an increase in abundance and a decrease in diversity. The range top of Luehndea spinosa appears to characterise the early Toarcian TST.  相似文献

A low-diversity Early Jurassic flora preserved in floodbasin siltstones of the Marburg Subgroup at Inverleigh Quarry in the Clarence-Moreton Basin, eastern Australia, is dominated by Allocladus helgei Jansson sp. nov., a conifer with denticulate leaves tentatively attributed to Araucariaceae. The assemblage also includes Rintoulia variabilis and Caytoniales, (Caytonia cucullata McLoughlin sp. nov. and cf. Sagenopteris nilssoniana), reinforcing the wide distribution of this order in Early to Middle Jurassic floras of Gondwana. Ferns (Cladophlebis and Sphenopteris species) and isoetalean lycophytes (Isoetites sp.) constitute the herbaceous elements of the flora. The palynoflora is dominated by cheirolepidiacean (Classopollis) pollen and is attributable to the upper part of the Corollina (= Classopollis) torosa Zone of late Pliensbachian–early Toarcian age (180–185 Ma). The Inverleigh flora represents one of the few Australian assemblages dated between the major phases of floristic turnover at the end of the Triassic and the Toarcian. Sedimentological characteristics, cuticular features of the conifer leaves and the abundance of free-sporing plants indicate a relatively humid palaeoclimate for the Clarence-Moreton Basin Early Jurassic.  相似文献

Abstract: Pleurotomaria species from lower Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) sediments of south‐western Luxembourg housed in the National Natural History Museum of Luxembourg are described. Seven species are recognized, one of which is new, Pleurotomaria faberi sp. nov. A more detailed definition of the diagnostic characters of the genus is proposed and the morphological continuity between Talantodiscus and Pleurotomaria is demonstrated, suggesting that the former cannot be considered as a distinct taxon. The palaeoecology, evolution and palaeobiogeographical history of Pleurotomaria are outlined. Pleurotomaria presumably first appeared in late Middle Triassic of New Zealand where it underwent a relative diversification up to the Hettangian (Early Jurassic). From early Hettangian, most of its evolutionary history took place in Europe and western Tethys. In the European epicontinental seas, Pleurotomaria experienced two important radiations. The first occurred in the Early Jurassic, with a peak in the late Pliensbachian, and was marked by an expansion of the distribution to the central part of western Tethys. After a collapse in species diversity, probably related to the early Toarcian anoxic event, a second radiation occurred. This culminated in the early Bajocian and was mainly confined in a region encompassing southern England, Paris Basin and southern Germany. Low‐spired species, formerly attributed to Talantodiscus, probably originated independently and iteratively during the history of Pleurotomaria. The facies and associated benthic faunas suggest that Pleurotomaria probably lived on shallow soft bottoms composed of mixed calcareous–siliciclastic sediments. The two main Early Jurassic and early Middle Jurassic radiations of the genus took place in these environments. Records of the genus in Jurassic carbonate platform deposits are very few and concern mainly post‐Bajocian species.  相似文献

Abstract: We describe an almost complete ichthyosaur skeleton from the middle Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) of the Beaujolais foothills near Lyon, France, and assign it to Temnodontosaurus azerguensis sp. nov. This new species exhibits cranial peculiarities such as a thin, elongated and possibly edentulous rostrum, as well as a reduced quadrate. These characters indicate dietary preferences that markedly differ from other species referred to Temnodontosaurus, a genus previously considered as the top predator of the Early Jurassic seas. Despite a conservative postcranial skeleton, we propose that Temnodontosaurus is one of the most ecologically disparate genera of ichthyosaurs, including apex predators and now a soft prey longirostrine hunter. Ammonites collected from the same stratigraphic level as the described specimen indicate that the new species is somewhat younger (bifrons ammonite zone) than the most known Toarcian ichthyosaurs and therefore slightly postdates the interval of severe environmental changes and marine invertebrate extinctions known as the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event. The present study therefore raises the question of whether postcrisis recovery of vertebrate faunas, including the radiation of Temnodontosaurus into a new ecological niche, may have been a consequence of marine ecosystem reorganization across this event.  相似文献

Jurassic radiolarians from 220 samples in Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C., Williston Lake, B.C., east-central Oregon, Baja California Sur, southern Spain, Austria, Slovenia, Turkey, Oman, Japan and Argentina were studied in order to construct global zonation for the Pliensbachian, Toarcian and Aalenian stages. Well-preserved faunas from continuous stratigraphic sections in Queen Charlotte Islands provide the most detailed record for this time interval, and all collections are tied to North American ammonite zones or assemblages. Collections from nearly all other areas lack independent dating except for early Toarcian carbon-isotope dating in Slovenia and late Aalenian ammonites in Spain.A database of 197 widely distributed updated taxonomic species was used to construct a Unitary Association (UA) zonation for the interval. A global sequence of 41 UAs was obtained for the top of the Sinemurian to the base of the Bajocian. The first and the last UAs represent the Late Sinemurian and the Early Bajocian respectively. The remaining 39 UAs were merged into nine zones (four Early Pliensbachian, one Late Pliensbachian, one Early Toarcian, one Middle-Late Toarcian, and two Aalenian) according to prominent radiolarian faunal breaks and ammonite data. The new zones are the Canutus tipperi - Katroma clara Zone (latest Sinemurian/earliest Pliensbachian); Zartus mostleri - Pseudoristola megaglobosa, Hsuum mulleri - Trillus elkhornensis and Gigi fustis - Lantus sixi zones (Early Pliensbachian); Eucyrtidiellum nagaiae - Praeparvicingula tlellensis Zone (Late Pliensbachian); Napora relica - Eucyrtidiellum disparile Zone (Early Toarcian); Elodium pessagnoi - Hexasaturnalis hexagonus Zone (Middle and Late Toarcian); Higumastra transversa - Napora nipponica Zone (early Aalenian); and Mirifusus proavus - Transhsuum hisuikyoense Zone (late Aalenian). These zones can be correlated worldwide and link previously established UA zonations for the Hettangian-Sinemurian and the Middle to Upper Jurassic. The new zonation allows high-resolution dating in the studied interval and provides a solid basis for analyzing faunal turnovers and the paleobiogeography of Jurassic radiolarians.  相似文献

The genera usually considered into the Bouleiceratinae subfamily belong in fact to different lineages of the Hildoceratidae family. An approach using paleogeographical, stratigraphical and morphological arguments on one hand and a cladistic approach on the other hand have allowed to separate 3 clusters with different paleogeographical and stratigraphical localisations. These are:
the Bouleiceratinae s.s. (genera Bouleiceras, Nejdia and Kohaticeras) from lower Toarcian;
the Leukadiellinae (genera Leukadiella and Renziceras) from middle Toarcian;
and the Paroniceratinae (genera Frechiella, Paroniceras and Oxyparoniceras) from middle and upper Toarcian. These latters are mainly present and the Tethyan domain, but are also known in the NW of Europe and especially in France where new populations have been studied in the Causses, in the centre-ouest and in the Lyon area. New taxa have been erected here: Oxyparoniceras (Neoparoniceras) nov. sub. gen., O. (N.) brocardi nov. sp. and O. (N.) sciaui nov. sp.

Feist‐Burkhardt, S. & Pross, J. 2010: Dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy of the Opalinuston Formation (Middle Jurassic) in the Aalenian type area in southwest Germany and north Switzerland. Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 10–31. In order to provide a detailed dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Lower Aalenian Opalinuston Formation from the Aalenian type area, 68 samples from four boreholes and one outcrop section were analysed. The sample localities are Hausen an der Fils and Wittnau in southwest Germany, Weiach in north Switzerland and Mont Russelin in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages were recovered from the Late Toarcian Aalensis Zone to the Late Aalenian Murchisonae Zone. The samples yielded rich, well‐preserved and diverse assemblages with 51 dinoflagellate cyst taxa identified in total. The dinoflagellate cyst distribution data obtained from this study allow a high‐resolution biostratigraphical subdivision of the lowermost Middle Jurassic Opalinuston Formation into four palynostratigraphical units. First and last occurrences, acmes and consistent presence of the species Batiacasphaera sp. A, Evansia cf. granochagrinata, Kallosphaeridium praussii, Nannoceratopsis triangulata, Phallocysta? frommernensis and Wallodinium laganum were selected as the criteria for defining these units. The obtained high‐resolution palynostratigraphical scheme provides a basis for establishing and further refining early Middle Jurassic biostratigraphy in the Boreal and Tethyan realms. □Aalenian, biostratigraphy, dinoflagellate cysts, Germany, Jurassic, Switzerland, Toarcian.  相似文献

植物化石气孔参数分析是目前恢复古大气二氧化碳浓度较为精准的方法之一,银杏类和松柏类等是恢复古大气CO_2浓度常用的化石类群。本文利用新疆准噶尔盆地下侏罗统三工河组的松柏类掌鳞杉科Brachyphyllum(Hirmeriella?)sp.化石对早侏罗世大气CO_2浓度进行了重建,获得早侏罗世大气CO_2浓度为~1200ppm,丰富了早侏罗世大气CO_2浓度信息,进一步说明掌鳞杉科植物通过气孔比率法在重建侏罗纪大气CO_2浓度方面的可靠性。掌鳞杉科植物的旱生构造和较高的大气CO_2浓度表明早侏罗世Toarcian期大洋缺氧事件在陆地生态系统内可能产生了一定的响应。  相似文献

An incomplete skull of the lower Toarcian ichthyosaurStenopterygius cf.quadriscissus is described from the lower Toarcian of Dobbertin (Mecklenburg, northeastern Germany). It represents both the northeasternmost occurrence of this ichthyosaur genus and the first diagnostic specimen from East Germany. It therefore extends the palaeobiogeographic range ofStenopterygius considerably and demonstrates that this ichthyosaur also inhabited the Germanic Basin east of the Rhenish Massif by Early Jurassic times. A palaeobiogeographical pattern is evident within the genusStenopterygius, with the ubiquitous speciesS. longifrons andS. hauffianus on one hand, andS. megalorhinus andS. quadriscissus on the other hand, which appear not to have ranged northwest of the London-Brabant Massif. It is suggested that, whereas the Rhenish Massif was not an effective barrier for dispersal of ichthyosaurs in Western Europe during early Toarcian times, the London-Brabant Massif played a rather significant role, as is also shown by the fossil record of other marine reptile groups. A provincialism of early Toarcian marine reptiles is suggested for Western Europe, with a northwestern province which contains the British occurrences, an intermediate, Subgermanic province in France and the Benelux countries, and a southeastern province in the Germanic Basin. The British and Germanic provinces are each characterized by a typical assemblage of ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and marine crocodiles, wheres the intermediate Subgermanic region shows an intermingling of faunal elements.   相似文献

Marine benthic dinoflagellates are interesting not only because some epiphytic genera can cause harmful algal blooms but also for understanding dinoflagellate evolution and diversification. Our understanding of their biodiversity is far from complete, and many thecate genera have unusual tabulation patterns that are difficult to relate to the diverse known phytoplankton taxa. A new sand-dwelling genus, Pachena gen. nov., is described based on morphological and DNA sequence data. Three species were discovered in distant locations and are circumscribed, namely, P. leibnizii sp. nov. from Canada, P. abriliae sp. nov. from Spain, and P. meriddae sp. nov. from Italy. All species are tiny (about 9–23 μm long) and heterotrophic. Species are characterized by their tabulation (APC 4′ 3a 6′′ 5c 5s 5′′′ 2′′′′), an apical hook covering the apical pore, an ascending cingulum, and a sulcus with central list. The first anterior intercalary plate is uniquely “sandwiched” between two plates. The species share these features and differ in the relative sizes and arrangements of their plates, especially on the epitheca. The ornamentation of thecal plates is species-specific. The new molecular phylogenies based on SSU and LSU rDNA sequences contribute to understanding the evolution of the planktonic relatives of Pachena, the Thoracosphaeraceae.  相似文献

This paper documents changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages compared with high resolution ammonite biozonation along the lower Toarcian to upper Toarcian marine succession of Southern Beaujolais in southeastern France. Eight ammonite and three benthic foraminiferal zones including five subzones are distinguished based on the occurrence of twelve foraminiferal events. Each benthic foraminiferal subzone is characterized by its taxonomic and morphogroup composition, which represents the paleoecological response of these taxa and morphotypes of benthic foraminifera in the Early Jurassic and early Middle Jurassic. Major changes in abundance and diversity occur at the end of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) and near the Early-Middle Jurassic transition. The low-abundance foraminiferal assemblages recorded in the Serpentinus ammonite Zone are interpreted as reflecting adverse environmental conditions after the T-OAE. The later recovery and development of the foraminiferal assemblages is documented in the Bifrons up to the Aalensis zones and is attributed to improved bottom water oxygenation. Common occurrences of agglutinated foraminifera represented mostly by Trochammina pulchra Ziegler in the Dispensum Zone point to an influx of cooler water masses during the late Toarcian. The morphogroup analysis carried out on the foraminifera and their paleoecological interpretations shed light on the changes in the stratigraphic record at the end of the T-OAE up to the Toarcian/Aalenian boundary.  相似文献

Complete, articulated starfish fossils are rare. However, more frequently encountered dissociated skeletal elements (ossicles) permit reliable taxonomic identification, making them a valuable data source for diversity estimates. Nearly 300 asteroid ossicles, collected from the middle Toarcian marls in western France can be assigned to five species. Four species and two genera are described: Comptoniaster vrinensis nov. sp. (Goniasteridae), Poncetaster crateri nov. gen. nov. sp. (Stauranderasteridae), Galbaster recurrans nov. gen. nov. sp. (Goniasteridae) and Pentasteria? liasica nov. sp. (Astropectinidae). The known diversity of Early Jurassic asteroids is increased from 12 to 16 species. These taxa illustrate the diversification of crown-group asteroids early in the Jurassic, following the Permo-Triassic crisis. They also reflect bias of the fossil record, and imply the existence of numerous ghost lineages in the evolutionary trees of extant groups. Variation in asteroid diversity across the “Seuil du Poitou” was driven by ecological constraints. The relative frequency (abundance of ossicles and diversity) of goniasterids and stauranderasterids increases in shallower environments. The Benthopectinidae, represented by Plesiastropecten hallovensis, occurred primarily from deep-shelf sediments. Similar ecological patterns are observed for more recent fossil and extant relatives, which further supports the idea of conservative evolution in post-Palaeozoic starfishes since the Early Jurassic.  相似文献

The Toarcian sediments exposed at Sainte-Verge (Deux-Sèvres, France) are especially rich in echinoderm remains. The present paper describes and illustrates the ophiuroids. On the basis of lateral arm plates, 13 species are distinguished, including two new ones: Sinosura fasciata sp. nov. and Sinosura extensa sp. nov. Most of the recognized species have been recorded previously from the Late Toarcian and Aalenian in Germany and, to a lesser extent, from the late Early Jurassic of England and Switzerland. High similarities between the faunas of northwest Europe suggest a boreal provincialism of ophiuroids. The recognition of 13 species is comparable to the diversity known from other stratigraphic levels (Jurassic and Cretaceous) or in the richest stations of recent oceans. The species association of the Toarcian of Sainte-Verge, with two Ophiolepididae, one Ophiacanthidae, four Ophioleucidae, two Ophiodermatidae, two Ophiuridae, and one Hemieuryalidae may be compared with species associations of recent shelf, offshore environments. Such persistence of components of diversity and ecological affinities of species suggests strong evolutionary conservatism of the ophiuroids, after a rapid radiation during the earliest Jurassic. © 2002 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS.
