In Theravada Buddhism temporal power is viewed as indispensible to the creation of political and economic conditions for spiritiual advancement. But it is a necessary evil. The Buddhist response to the misuse of power is to subordinate it to Buddhist ethics and to deny politics autonomy from religion. Yut, in Buddhist Thailand, there is another tradition which justifies pragmatism and even the use of force. This paper concerns a local leader in Northern Thailand who has attempted to achieve some sort of balance between these to contradictory traditions – a goal that has proved elusive.  相似文献

Khruba Bunchum Yanasangwaror, despite his youth, has already been proclaimed by many, in the Yuan Buddhist world of the upper Mekong region, to be a ton bun (‘source of merit’). His charismatic reputation derives from his ascetic virtues, his assumed accumulation of merit in past lives and his Bodhisattva‐like compassion for others. His compassion is expressed through dedication to the building of religious monuments that allows the laity to acquire merit by contributing labour and money. Another dimension of the conception of ton bun is that of sacral kingship. In these and other respects Khruba Bunchum's religious career emulates that of Khruba Siwichai, the famous northern Thai monk of the early 20th century. However, Khruba Siwichai's religious activities were confined to northern Thailand, whereas Khruba Bunchum's peregrinations throughout northern Thailand, northern Laos, Sipsongpanna (in China) and northeast Burma mark out a sacred Buddhist space, focused on the heart of the notorious Golden Triangle. I argue in this paper that this imagined sacred space both transcends and challenges the dominant discourse of modern nation‐state.  相似文献

Since the end of the socialist period, Mongolia has experienced economic instabilities, growing inequalities, and increasing urbanisation. Prosperity (dallaga) rituals, once predominantly carried out by nomadic herders at specific times of the year, are now also held regularly within Ulaanbaatar’s Buddhist temples. In these ceremonies, Buddhist lamas and lay participants attempt to ‘call’ or ‘pull’ wealth to the household. In this urban context, prosperity rituals are overtly about money, combining nomadic notions of wealth, sedentary ideas of growth and multiplication, and contemporary anxieties regarding growing corruption and inequality. Following from nomadic ideas that link prosperity with movement, dallaga rituals attempt to influence the ways that money travels around the economy. As money has seed like qualities, one must be careful to ensure that the right kind of money is attracted to the household so that it does not multiply the misfortunes that are thought to characterise money made through ill-gotten means.  相似文献

A synopsis of Nymphaeaceae from Thailand was made by means of a literature search, consultation of herbarium specimens in several Thai and European herbaria, and a survey of 47 wetlands throughout Thailand. Nymphaeaceae phylogeny, habitats and reproductive ecology are reviewed. All species encountered were cultivated at Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden in Chiang Mai for further observations. Two species of Barclaya ( B. longifolia and B. motleyi ) the latter being represented by only a single herbarium specimen with uncertain origin, were encountered. In Nymphaea, four native species, the day-blooming N. cyanea and N. nouchali , and the night-blooming N. pubescens and N. rubra, were encountered. In addition, the day-blooming N. capensis, which has been introduced into Thailand, was found adventive at several localities. Barclaya species are restricted to pristine natural forest habitats, whereas Nymphaea species occur naturally in swamps and lakes, but are now found in many anthropogenic habitats.  相似文献

The article explores a popular volunteer movement in Thailand and its connection to Buddhist morality and contemporary Thai politics. The article argues that volunteering in Thailand is often conceived of as a gift in various ways: as a form of dana or selfless giving; a gift from ‘good people’ to those defined as ‘in need’ in society and a gift to the Thai nation as a whole. Indeed, when volunteering is said to be a gift to the Thai nation, it is not necessarily because of its ability to redistribute resources, but because of its perceived ability to cultivate moral values and ‘good people’ for the Thai nation. The paper explores the implications that stem from presenting volunteering as a gift, with a strong emphasis on morality and ‘good people’, and how this popular discourse on volunteering may contribute to the maintenance of political status quo in Thailand, particularly in the context of the ongoing political struggles in recent years.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the species diversity of rodents living in karst ecosystems of Thailand. A survey has been conducted throughout Thailand, 122 karsts sampled and 477 Murinae rodents live-trapped. Phylogenetic reconstructions were carried out using two mitochondrial markers (cytb, COI). A sequence-based species delimitation method completed by the analysis of the level of genetic divergence was then applied to define species boundaries within our dataset. The phylogenetic position of Niviventer hinpoon was also investigated and sequences obtained from the holotype specimen of this species were used to reliably identify samples of N. hinpoon. A total of 12 described Murinae species, corresponding to 17 deeply divergent genetic lineages, were encountered in limestone karsts of Thailand. Our study revealed an important genetic diversity within the traditionally recognized species Maxomys surifer (four highly divergent genetic lineages), Leopoldamys neilli (two highly divergent genetic lineages) and Berylmys bowersi (two highly divergent genetic lineages). These species could be considered as species complex and require further taxonomic work. This study also provides valuable information on the distribution of the two rodent species endemic to limestone karsts of Thailand, L. neilli and N. hinpoon. Leopoldamys neilli was the most abundant species encountered in Thai karsts during our survey. However, L. neilli specimens from western Thailand are genetically highly divergent from the remaining populations of L. neilli and could represent a separate species. Niviventer hinpoon, phylogenetically closely related to N. fulvescens, is much rarer and its distribution limited to central Thailand. Most of the other captured species are typically associated with forest ecosystems. This study suggests that limestone karsts play a key role in the preservation of the rodent species endemic to such habitat, but they would also provide refuges for the forest-dwelling Murinae rodents in deforested regions.  相似文献

One hundred and seventy‐four isolates of Pyricularia grisea were collected from various hosts such as barley, rice, weed and wild rice in Thailand. Seven arbitrary decamer primers from the set of University of British Columbia were employed and nine lineages were classified. Lineages B, C and H were predominant, contributing up to 70% of total pathogens in this study. Analysis showed that the distribution of each lineage differs from the predominant lineages across Thailand in such that other lineages were restricted in particular area. For instance, lineage A was limited only in southern Thailand, whereas wide distribution of lineages B and C reflected an influence of both biological and physical effects on pathogen variation. Principal component analysis resulted in a total of four groups of blast pathogen with small distinctions between barley‐, rice‐, weed‐ and wild rice‐infected blast. Bridging relationships occurred among border isolates of weed and rice blast suggesting a chance of migrations between hosts. Higher diversity was observed in northern, north‐eastern and central Thailand while eastern and southern parts were rather low. Genetic diversity indices elucidated an abundance of pathogen lineages existing in northern Thailand suggesting that it should be the centre of diversity.  相似文献

There is considerable ethno-linguistic and genetic variation among human populations in Asia, although tracing the origins of this diversity is complicated by migration events. Thailand is at the center of Mainland Southeast Asia (MSEA), a region within Asia that has not been extensively studied. Genetic substructure may exist in the Thai population, since waves of migration from southern China throughout its recent history may have contributed to substantial gene flow. Autosomal SNP data were collated for 438,503 markers from 992 Thai individuals. Using the available self-reported regional origin, four Thai subpopulations genetically distinct from each other and from other Asian populations were resolved by Neighbor-Joining analysis using a 41,569 marker subset. Using an independent Principal Components-based unsupervised clustering approach, four major MSEA subpopulations were resolved in which regional bias was apparent. A major ancestry component was common to these MSEA subpopulations and distinguishes them from other Asian subpopulations. On the other hand, these MSEA subpopulations were admixed with other ancestries, in particular one shared with Chinese. Subpopulation clustering using only Thai individuals and the complete marker set resolved four subpopulations, which are distributed differently across Thailand. A Sino-Thai subpopulation was concentrated in the Central region of Thailand, although this constituted a minority in an otherwise diverse region. Among the most highly differentiated markers which distinguish the Thai subpopulations, several map to regions known to affect phenotypic traits such as skin pigmentation and susceptibility to common diseases. The subpopulation patterns elucidated have important implications for evolutionary and medical genetics. The subpopulation structure within Thailand may reflect the contributions of different migrants throughout the history of MSEA. The information will also be important for genetic association studies to account for population-structure confounding effects.  相似文献

Objectives

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of motorcycle to car transitioning and urbanisation on traffic injury rates in Thailand.

Design

Analysis of two consecutive surveys of a large national cohort study.

Setting

Thailand.

Participants

The data derived from 57,154 Thai Cohort Study (TCS) participants who provided relevant data on both the 2005 and 2009 surveys.

Primary and secondary outcome measures

Motorcycle and car traffic crash injury self-reported in 2009, with twelve months’ recall.

Results

In 2009, 5608(10%) participants reported a traffic crash injury. Most crashes involved a motorcycle (74%). Car access increased and motorcycle use decreased between 2005 and 2009. Among those who used a motorcycle at both time points, traffic injury incidence was 2.8 times greater compared to those who did not use a motorcycle at either time point. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to test longitudinal and cross sectional factors associated with traffic crash injury: in the adjusted model, cars were negatively and motorcycles positively associated with injury. Living in an urban area was not injury protective in the adjusted model of traffic crash injury.

Conclusions

Ongoing urbanisation in Thailand can be expected to lead to further reductions in road traffic injuries based on transition from motorcycles to cars in urban areas. Cities, however, do not provide an intrinsically safer traffic environment. To accommodate a safe transition to car use in Thailand, traffic infrastructural changes anticipating the growing car density in urban areas is warranted.  相似文献

A large amount of banana genetic resource has been found in Thailand which is believed to be one of the centers of its origins. To assess genetic diversity and determine genetic relationships of edible bananas in Thailand, 110 accessions of banana species and cultivars collected from villages and natural locations were investigated. UPGMA clustering of numerical data from Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) patterns showed two large groups which corresponded to genome designations of Musa acuminata (AA) and Musa balbisiana (BB), the known ancestors of most edible cultivars. The AFLP data suggested that among Thai bananas, AA and AAA cultivars were closely related to M. acuminata subsp. malaccensis, while some of ‘B’ genome contained ones closely related to wild M. balbisiana in Thailand and some may have been imported. Eight species-specific PCR-based primer pairs, generated from the AFLP results clearly identify ‘A’ and ‘B’ genomes within cultivars and hybrids. The analyses were useful to readily and easily infer progenitors of these cultivars and pronounce wide genetic diversity of the bananas in Thailand.  相似文献

Four of the papers presented at a panel on acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) at the 1994 conference of the Australian Anthropological Society focused on Thailand, which is widely regarded as the epicenter of the epidemic in Southeast Asia. In his introduction to these papers, Lyttleton notes that the discourse on AIDS in Thailand has been characterized by a medical, hierarchical approach. Unlike the situation in countries such as the US, where homosexuals have engaged in collective activism to prevent the further spread of AIDS, Thailand's high-risk groups (e.g., prostitutes and injecting drug users) lack the group identification essential for the development of a culture of safe sex practices. Any discussion of AIDS in the Thai context must include an examination of the role of social drinking in framing men's public sexuality and male identity. Moreover, the homophobic nature of Thai culture has led to a dismissal of the reality of homosexual transmission.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers for 14 taxa of indigenous Thai Rubiaceae are presented. They include first counts for 3 genera: Aphaenandra (A. uniflora), Prismatomeris (P. tetrandra subsp. malayana) and Tarennoidea (T. wallichii) ; all show diploidy on x=11. The remaining counts are first counts for species: Argostemma diversifolium, A. neurocalyx and A. pictum, Coptosapelta flavenscens, Gardenia saxtilis, Ixora sp., Morinda sp., Mussaenda sanderiana, Oxyceros horridus, Rothmannia wittii (first count for an Asiatic species of the genus) (all diploid on x=11), and Canthium sp. (tetraploid on x=11). The poor state of karyological knowledge of indigenous Thai Rubiaceae is discussed, and a table including all relevant known chromosome counts is presented. Chromosome data are only known for 38 genera (ca. 41% of all Rubiaceae genera occurring in Thailand); chromosome numbers are often only available for one or few taxa of each genus [in sum, for only about 50 (or for roughly 10% of all) taxa]. Of only 14 genera (ca. 15%), chromosomes were counted from Thai material (for the others, counts originate from elsewhere, i.e. refer to more widely distributed taxa also extending into Thailand).  相似文献

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has many pharmacological functions including being a major inhibitory neurotransmitter. Two comparative methods for GABA production in rice grains as main food source in Thailand were investigated in this study. Fermentation and germination method were separately carried out using seven selected local grain cultivars in northern Thailand. Red yeast rice, obtained from the fermentation method, gave the higher GABA concentration than the germinated rice produced from the germination method in most rice cultivars. The highest GABA concentration was 28.37 mg/g at 3 weeks fermentation time of glutinous rice, O. sativa L. cv. Sanpatong 1 cultivars, while germinated rice from glutinous rice; O. sativa L. cv. Korkor6 (RD6) cultivars contained the highest GABA concentration of 3.86 mg/g. These results provide information for the basis of an appropriate method for GABA production. The fermentation produced higher GABA concentration but required longer production period and red yeast rice was obtained as product. On the other hand, the germination method yielded rice grains with lower GABA but in more suitable form for consumption. Both methods are considered to be economical and efficient methods to increase GABA in rice grains, providing alternative products with higher nutritional values.  相似文献

A suspected new species of Leishmania is described as the causative agent of the third reported case of autochthonous visceral leishmaniasis in a Thai man living in Southern Thailand. The results of PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer 1 of ssrRNA and the mini-exon genes were different from those of previously reported Leishmania species. A direct agglutination test (DAT) revealed that antibody against Leishmania infection was detected in nine domestic cats. No potential vectors could be identified. A large-scale epidemiological survey of leishmaniasis should be urgently conducted since visceral leishmaniasis is considered an emerging disease of public health concern in Thailand.  相似文献

The Neotropical butterfly Dryas iulia has been collected from several locations in Thailand and Malaysia since 2007, and has been observed breeding in the wild, using introduced Passiflora foetida as a larval host plant. The butterfly is bred by a butterfly house in Phuket, Thailand, for release at weddings and Buddhist ceremonies, and we hypothesized that this butterfly house was the source of wild, Thai individuals. We compared wing patterns and COI barcodes from two, wild Thai populations with individuals obtained from this butterfly house. All Thai individuals resemble the subspecies D. iulia modesta, and barcodes from wild and captive Thai specimens were identical. This unique, Thai barcode was not found in any of the 30 specimens sampled from the wild in the species'' native range, but is most similar to specimens from Costa Rica, where many exporting butterfly farms are located. These data implicate the butterfly house as the source of Thailand''s wild D. iulia populations, which are currently so widespread that eradication efforts are unlikely to be successful.  相似文献

Three strains of thermophilic bacteria producing extracellular protease have been isolated from hot springs in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The bacterium producing the highest amount of protease has been selected and identified as belonging to the genusThermus, and is tentatively calledThermus 2S. The isolate is a Gram-negative, rod shaped bacterium. It exhibited maximum growth around 60°C at pH 7. Entrapment of the microbial cells in calcium alginate maintained the cell viability. Protease production from immobilized cells using 2 g wet cells per 10 ml 3% (w/v) sodium alginate was higher than that from a free-cell system using 2% inoculum.  相似文献

This paper examines the practice of working-class group excursions in Thailand, organized by and for rural labor migrants in Bangkok. These trips involve traditional forms of Buddhist ceremonial as well as more self-consciously "modern" sightseeing activities in distant regions of the country. More than just a welcome respite from the drudgery and discipline of factory jobs, these excursions allow labor migrants to make important claims about their experiences as members of the Thai nation-state. As tourist-consumers, migrant workers appropriate powerful signs and symbols of modern Thai identity and status, in doing so they contest (and at least partly rework) their material and ideological marginalization within contemporary Thai society.  相似文献

Purple or black rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a culturally important germplasm in Asia with a long history of cultivation in northern Thailand. Purple rice is identified by the color of the rice pericarp, which varies from purple to black with the accumulation of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. In the present study, we assessed molecular variation within and between wetland purple rice landraces germplasm from northern and northeastern Thailand using 12 microsatellite loci. All purple rice varieties surveyed showed high levels of homozygosity within varieties and strong genetic differentiation among varieties, indicating the fixation of genetic differences among them. This pattern is consistent with purple rice farming practices in northern Thailand, where a small portion of harvested seed is selected and replanted based on farmers’ preferences. The reduced genetic diversity and high homozygosity observed for purple rice is also consistent with patterns expected for this inbreeding crop. Genetic differentiation among the varieties showed some degree of structuring based on their geographical origin. Taken together, these data highlight that the genetic diversity and structure of wetland purple rice landraces is shaped by farmer utilization and cultivation through local cultural practices, and that conservation should focus on ex situ conservation across its cultivation range, along with on-farm, in situ conservation based on farmers’ seed-saving practices. In situ conservation may prove especially valuable for preserving the genetic identity of local varieties and promote adaptation to local environments.
