In this work we have studied the influence of air temperature on the starting dates of Alnus and Populus pollination in two different climatic regions in Europe: central Italy and The Netherlands. The start of the Alnus pollen season varied between 27th January and 16th February in the Italian stations while in The Netherlands it showed an average delay of about one month. For Populus the beginning of the pollen season was delayed on an average 15 days at Dutch places compared to central Italy. In the former it varied between 14th March and 21st April while in the latter between 28th February and 24th March. Significant correlations exist between the beginning of pollination for these taxa and temperature conditions in the preceding periods. The highest correlations found were with daily mean decade temperature for three decades before the average starting dates of the pollen season. These correlations were better for The Netherlands than for central Italy perhaps because the temperature in Holland is the more prominent meteorological factor (relative to precipitation) compared with central Italy, where precipitation has much influence in winter. This study indicated correlations between the pollination and temperature also during the dormant period in the preceding season.  相似文献

Airborne pollen concentration patterns reflect flowering phenology of a given species, and it may be a sensitive regional indicator in climate change studies. This paper presents the relationship between a strategic biological event, such as olive flowering, and the air temperature trend, registered over a large scale (1982–2007) in the Umbria region. The aim of the study was to determine relationships between phenological behaviour (flowering) of olive trees and the air temperature trend (1982–2007) in the Umbria region. The phenological data on flowering phase were registered indirectly through an aerobiological monitoring technique. The obtained results showed a strong relationship between phenology and thermal trend. This characteristic was confirmed from results of correlations between temperature (mean temperature from 1st March) and flowering dates, especially that of full flowering (r = −0.9297). Moreover, the results showed an advance trend of 6, 8 and 10 days, respectively of start, full and end of flowering dates. The advance of the recorded flowering time in this period is to ascribe mainly to the increase of mean temperature and above all to that registered in months of May and June.  相似文献

Climate change is expected to have a significant effect on the first flowering date (FFD) in plants flowering in early spring. Prunus yedoensis Matsum is a good model plant for analyzing this effect. In this study, we used a degree day model to analyze the effect of air temperatures on the FFDs of P. yedoensis at Wuhan University from a long-time series from 1951 to 2012. First, the starting date (=7 February) is determined according to the lowest correlation coefficient between the FFD and the daily average accumulated degree days (ADD). Second, the base temperature (=−1.2°C) is determined according to the lowest root mean square error (RMSE) between the observed and predicted FFDs based on the mean of 62-year ADDs. Finally, based on this combination of starting date and base temperature, the daily average ADD of every year was calculated. Performing a linear fit of the daily average ADD to year, we find that there is an increasing trend that indicates climate warming from a biological climatic indicator. In addition, we find that the minimum annual temperature also has a significant effect on the FFD of P. yedoensis using the generalized additive model. This study provides a method for analyzing the climate change on the FFD in plants'' flowering in early spring.  相似文献

A study is made of the effect of air temperature on the start of the pollen seasons of three tree species—Ulmus, Platanus andOlea—in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula. These initial results are based on an aerobiological analysis performed over a 4-year period in the city of Granada, Spain. Sampling was carried out with a Burkard spore trap. The main aim of the present study was to use regression analysis to identify the preseasonal date when these species start to accumulate heat in their floral buds, enabling models to be created that indicate the onset of the pollen season for these taxa. ForUlmus there was no significant correlation between the onset of pollination and the mean temperature during the preceding period, whereasPlatanus presented a significant correlation with mean temperature during the month of January, andOlea with mean temperature during the second fortnight in February and the month of March. ForUlmus, the start of the pollen season ranged between 30 January and 8 February; forPlatanus, between 13 and 17 March; and forOlea, between 20 April and 13 May. The accumulated temperature needed to induce the onset of flowering ranged between 121 and 256°C forUlmus, with values of 428–607°C and 656–881°C forPlatanus andOlea, respectively.  相似文献

The pre-meiotic, meiotic and tetrad stages of development in microsporangia of Alsophila setosa were studied with particular emphasis on the early establishment of patterning in the microspore wall and the subsequent development of the sporoderm. The data obtained were compared with corresponding ontogenetic stages of Psilotum nudum. Tapetal behaviour was also examined. During the tetrad period, only one layer, a thin undulating sheet, appeared alongside the plasma membrane of the tetraspores, and this was evidently formed on a pre-patterned structure – a fibrillar layer, corresponding to a kind of primexine matrix. The early free microspores had a wavy plasma membrane with a parallel, sinusoidal, thin initial sporoderm layer. The proximal apertural fold was observed to be an extended outgrowth of this initial spore envelope. Sporoderm ontogeny during the tetrad period in Alsophila and Psilotum show some common points, but also fundamental differences, mainly in the relative timing of events: in Alsophila the end of the tetrad period is the starting point for exospore development, whereas in Psilotum the exospore is already complete at this stage. Considerable differences were also observed in the tapetum of the two species.  相似文献

Pollination ecology of Quercus is influenced by meteorological, biotic and genetic factors. This study was undertaken to ascertain the effect induced by these factors on pollen production, release and dispersion. Aerobiological data have been used in recent years as phenological information, because the presence of pollen in the air is the result of flowering across a wide area. The onset of the Quercus pollen season and the atmospheric pollen concentrations during the pollination period in two localities of north-west Spain (Ourense and Santiago) were determined from 1993 to 2001. There were important variations in total annual pollen as a result of meteorological conditions, lenticular galls produced by Neuropterus on catkins and biennial genetic rhythms of pollen production. In order to determine the beginning of flowering, a thermal time model has been used. Chill requirements were around 800 chilling hours (CH) and heat requirements were 953 growth degree days (GDD in °C) in Santiago and 586 GDD in Ourense. Pollen in the air show positive correlation (99% significance) with daily thermal oscillation, maximum and minimum temperatures, and hours of sunshine. Regression analysis with previous days' pollen concentrations explained the high percentage of pollen concentration variability, as meteorological variables do not, on their own, explain pollen production and release.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 149 , 283–297.  相似文献

The pollination biology of the orchid Ceratandra grandiflora was investigated in order to determine whether the partial loss of a specialized floral reward (i.e., oil) was the result of an incomplete shift from one specialized pollinator to another. In the three-species clade of section Ceratandra, there has been a progressive loss of the oil-secreting callus. lt is always present in C atrata, sometimes present in C. grandiflora, and never present in C. globosa. Thirty-nine to 67% of individuals in populations of C. grandiflora bear the callus gland, but gland presence has no signifikant effect on the proportion of flowers pollinated. Pollinator observations show that the shift in pollinators is complete and that the oil-secreting callus is a vestige of the ancestral oil-bee pollination system that no longer plays a role in pollination. C grandiflora is pollinated almost exclusively by a single species of hopliine beetle (Scarabaeidae). Experiments with artificial flower traps indicate that color alone can explain the attraction of beetles to C. grandiflora, despite the absence of a floral reward. The proportion of C. grandiflora flowers pollinated (50.2 and 61.1%; N = 524 and 324 flowers, respectively) is unusually high for a plant that relies on generalized food deception and is probably due to the use of inflorescences as mating sites (i.e., rendezvous pollination).  相似文献

The Coriolis δ air sampler is a new volumetric air sampler, dedicated to outdoor monitoring of airborne biological particles, including pollen and spores. In the present work, the performance of the Coriolis in the collection of pollen grains was evaluated in comparison with a Hirst spore trap, the most frequently used trap in aerobiological studies, in two cities of South Europe, Evora (Portugal) and Córdoba (Spain). Both concentration values are compared, and statistical analysis was carried out. The present study indicated that, in general, pollen counts for all taxa detected with the Hirst trap were higher than those detected with the Coriolis δ in both cities. In Córdoba, significant differences were detected for all taxa except for Cupressus, Olea and Pinus, while in Evora significant differences were noted for all except Pinus and Poaceae. Differences were particularly marked in species flowering during April and May. In spite of theses differences, Spearman correlation test results showed that the relationship between Hirst and Coriolis curves was always positive and significant (p > 0.01). Regards to the number of detected taxa, the results showed greater diversity for the Hirst sampler in both cities.  相似文献

开花物候是物种间相互作用的重要生活史特征和适合度因子,在全球气候变化的背景下而备受关注.为探讨开花时间如何存种内和种间水平上影响植物的传粉和生殖成功,我们连续3年(2003-2005)对不同花期和伴生种存在情况下的鹤首马先蒿(Pedicularis gruina)的传粉者访花忠实度、受粉率、坐果率、单果种子产量和果实被啃食频率进行了比较研究.结果表明鹤首马先蒿的坐果率主要受其传粉环境的影响:在没有伴生种时,不同时期鹤首马先蒿的坐果率没有显著差异,34-38%的花可以坐果;在有伴生种存在时既可以显著提高其坐果率,也可显著降低其坐果率,这取决于传粉者类型以及伴生种密穗马先蒿(P.densispica)花期的差异.密穗马先蒿具有花蜜和花粉双重报酬,在群落中可以作为主体物种吸引传粉者并间接促进与其伴生的鹤首马先蒿的传粉和生殖成功.同样无蜜的管花马先蒿(P.siphonantha)和鹤首马先蒿伴生,则是通过提高群落水平对传粉者的吸引力进而直接促进鹤首马先蒿的传粉和生殖成功.此外,研究结果也表明开花时间对坐果率没有显著影响,但是显著影响单果种子产量和果实被啃食的频率.在相同的传粉条件下早花期植株单果种子产量显著高于晚花期的种子产量,同时早花期的果实被啃食的频率显著增加.  相似文献

The KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa hosts a large diversity of asclepiads (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadoideae), many of which are endemic to the area. The asclepiads are of particular interest because of their characteristically highly evolved floral morphology. During 3 months of fieldwork (November 2000 to January 2001) the flower visitors and pollinators to an assemblage of nine asclepiads at an upland grassland site were studied. These observations were augmented by laboratory studies of flower morphology (including scanning electron microscopy) and flower colour (using a spectrometer). Two of the specialized pollination systems that were documented are new to the asclepiads: fruit chafer pollination and pompilid wasp pollination. The latter is almost unique in the angiosperms. Taxa possessing these specific pollination systems cluster together in multidimensional phenotype space, suggesting that there has been convergent evolution in response to similar selection to attract identical pollinators. Pollination niche breadth varied from the very specialized species, with only one pollinator, to the more generalized, with up to ten pollinators. Pollinator sharing by the specialized taxa does not appear to have resulted in niche differentiation in terms of the temporal or spatial dimensions, or with regards to placement of pollinaria. Nestedness analysis of the data set showed that there was predictability and structure to the pattern of plant-pollinator interactions, with generalist insects visiting specialized plants and vice versa. The research has shown that there is still much to be learned about plant-pollinator interactions in areas of high plant diversity such as South Africa.  相似文献

We compared the amount of variation in flower size between autogamous and insect-pollinated species to examine the hypothesis that pollinator-mediated selection stabilizes flower size in plant populations. One would expect the flower size variation to be larger in selfing species that are less affected by pollinator-mediated stabilizing selection than in insect-pollinated species. The results of phylogenetic comparisons between autogamous and insect-pollinated flowers supported the pollinator-mediated stabilizing selection hypothesis, although the non-phylogenetic comparison did not. According to our results, we discuss the factors influencing the flower size variation.  相似文献

This work was undertaken to examine the combined effect of air temperature and precipitation during late winter and early spring on modeling greenup date of grass species in the Inner Mongolian Grassland. We used the traditional thermal time model and developed two revised thermal time models coupling air temperature and precipitation to simulate greenup date of three dominant grass species at six stations from 1983 to 2009. Results show that climatic controls on greenup date of grass species were location-specific. The revised thermal time models coupling air temperature and precipitation show higher simulation parsimony and efficiency than the traditional thermal time model for five of 11 data sets at Bayartuhushuo, Xilinhot and Xianghuangqi, whereas the traditional thermal time model indicates higher simulation parsimony and efficiency than the revised thermal time models coupling air temperature and precipitation for the other six data sets at E’ergunayouqi, Ewenkeqi and Chaharyouyihouqi. The mean root mean square error of the 11 models is 4.9 days. Moreover, the influence of late winter and early spring precipitation on greenup date seems to be stronger at stations with scarce precipitation than at stations with relatively abundant precipitation. From the mechanism perspectives, accumulated late winter and early spring precipitation may play a more important role as the precondition of forcing temperature than as the supplementary condition of forcing temperature in triggering greenup. Our findings suggest that predicting responses of grass phenology to global climate change should consider both thermal and moisture scenarios in some semiarid and arid areas.  相似文献

Conifer trees possess a typical anatomical tree‐ring structure characterized by a transition from large and thin‐walled earlywood tracheids to narrow and thick‐walled latewood tracheids. However, little is known on how this characteristic structure is maintained across contrasting environmental conditions, due to its crucial role to ensure sap ascent and mechanical support. In this study, we monitored weekly wood cell formation for up to 7 years in two temperate conifer species (i.e., Picea abies (L.) Karst and Larix decidua Mill.) across an 8°C thermal gradient from 800 to 2,200 m a.s.l. in central Europe to investigate the impact of air temperature on rate and duration of wood cell formation. Results indicated that towards colder sites, forming tracheids compensate a decreased rate of differentiation (cell enlarging and wall thickening) by an extended duration, except for the last cells of the latewood in the wall‐thickening phase. This compensation allows conifer trees to mitigate the influence of air temperature on the final tree‐ring structure, with important implications for the functioning and resilience of the xylem to varying environmental conditions. The disappearing compensation in the thickening latewood cells might also explain the higher climatic sensitivity usually found in maximum latewood density.  相似文献

Abstract. Germination of semi-arid Quercus is strongly correlated with the rainy season. However, the timing and amount of summer precipitation in the southwestern United States is extremely variable. Ongoing and impending changes in global and regional climates are likely to increase this variability. Specifically, anthropogenically induced changes in general circulation patterns may alter the seasonal distribution of precipitation in a directional manner. In addition to climatic variability, the inter- and intra-annual variability of Quercus emoryi Torr. (Emory oak) acorn maturation also is high. Therefore, in light of existing climatic variability and potential future climate change, we conducted a greenhouse experiment to investigate the effects of acorn maturation date and the timing of the onset of the ‘monsoon’ on emergence of Q. emoryi seedlings. Acorns were collected at weekly intervals in July of 1995 and 1996, planted in a greenhouse, and subjected to different watering treatments. Watering treatments were (1) acorns watered the same day as planting; (2) acorns watered two weeks after planting; (3) acorns watered four weeks after planting. Emergence in 1995 was significantly greater in the last week of acorn maturation and decreased significantly as time to the onset of the ‘monsoon’ increased. Emergence in 1996 was very low, presumably because of soil moisture contents that were lower than those observed in 1995. The dependence of Q. emoryi on water for emergence has profound implications for Q. emoryi recruitment in the face of current climatic variability and future climate change. Summers with a delayed ‘monsoon’ and decreased soil moisture may severely constrain recruitment of this woody plant.  相似文献

Disa cooperi is a robust grassland orchid with long-spud white flowers which are strongly scented in the evening. Observations at a site in Natal province, South Africa showed that hawkmoths are frequent visitors to the orchid at dusk. The hawkmoth Basiothia schenki was an effective pollinator of D. cooperi; this hawk-moth has a medium length proboscis (x = 4.3 cm) which can be fully inserted into the nectar-containing spur of the orchid. Pollinaria are attached ventrally to the basal portion of the proboscis where it joins the head. Another hawkmoth, Agrius convolvuli , commonly foraged on nectar from D. cooperi , but did not carry pollinaria, probably because its proboscis is too long (x = 10 cm) to allow contact between the thick basal portion of the proboscis and the orchid column. Lips in Disa are typically linear and do not produce scent, thus the autapomorphic spathulate and scent-producing lip of D. cooperi indicates that hawkmoth pollination is derived in this species, probably from a long-proboscid fly pollinated ancestor.  相似文献

The young of wading birds that breed in some parts of the arctic hatch when their insect food supply is most abundant. This appears to be the ultimate factor determining the date of egg-laying. In various other arctic birds the date of breeding may be influenced, directly or indirectly, by the time at which snow or ice melts. The Joint Biological Expedition to N.E. Greenland 1974 studied Ringed plovers Charadrius hiaticula , Dunlins Calidris aplina , Sanderlings Calidris alba , Knots Calidris canutus , and Turnstones Arenaria interpres breeding in various areas within 80 km of each other.
In 1974 the thaw was two or three weeks later than normal in the region. The time at which snow cleared and the dates of breeding of the waders differed considerably between valleys: breeding was delayed in valleys that cleared late. In all areas egg-laying ceased early in July, probably because chicks hatching from eggs laid later would not be ready to migrate by the end of the summer. Hence the mean date and length of the egg-laying period were determined by the date of snow clearance from the breeding areas.
Studies of the potential food resources indicate that the waders in N.E. Greenland do not appear to time their breeding so that the young hatch at some peak of food abundance. Sufficient food resources are probably available over a long period of time.  相似文献

Rose plants (Rosa hybrida ‘Sonia’=‘Sweet Promise’) were grown in heated (minimum night temperature 17°C), and unheated greenhouses with or without root heating to 21°C. These trials covered 6 growth cycles extending over two winter seasons. In the heated greenhouse, root heating did not increase yield, flower quality or plant development. In the unheated greenhouse, root-heated plants grew as well as those in the air-heated greenhouse as long as the air temperature did not fall below 6°C. When minimum night temperatures fell below 6°C, growth, yield and quality were reduced, irrespective of root temperature. Daytime plant water relations were studied in plants growing at 6 different root temperatures in the unheated greenhouse. Leaf resistance to water diffusion was lowest at optimal root temperature. Total leaf water potential was not significantly affected by root temperature.  相似文献
