Raindrops brim with pollen even when there is no ambient local pollen. How does this nonlocal pollen get inside rain? The likely answer is long-range transport beneath or inside clouds. To test this hypothesis, we captured rain-delivered pollen on Ocracoke Island, NC, USA over a 12-day interval before local pine pollen release then reconstructed its trajectory and its atmospheric exposure conditions. Findings were as follows: four rain episodes yielded a total of 632 pollen grains of which 6.7% germinated. To find pollen sources, we first identified pollen-releasing forested areas using a predictive heat sum equation for each rain episode. Next, we constructed the backward trajectory for air parcels carrying rain-delivered pollen from those forests using the MLDP atmospheric transport and dispersion model. Nonlocal sources were located at distances up to 300 km from Ocracoke Island and distances lessened with each successive episode. Below-cloud transport time was 8 and 17 h for Episodes A and B, respectively. Pollen grains were exposed to harsh atmospheric conditions during below-cloud transport, yet some grains still germinated. Atmospheric turbulence patterns changed for each episode, so distance from pollen source was poorly correlated with pollen transport time. Pollen germination was not closely correlated with either distances or transport time. In-cloud transport was more likely for pollen sampled during Episodes C and D. Pine pollen, although rarely allergenic, brings fresh insights into how atmospheric events can trigger human respiratory distress.

A study was carried out to investigate the influence of atmospheric pollen and fungi in determining allergic diseases by comparing the frequency of skin reactions to air sampling data over a 6-year period.

48% of our population reacted to at least one of the pollen and fungal extracts used. Among pollen, Gramineae gave the most frequent positive reactions, followed by Parietaria, Olea and Compositae. The most common positive skin tests in fungus sensitive patients were by extracts of Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus and Candida

As for the aerobiological survey, the general trend of pollen and molds was similar during the sampling period. The annual pollen catch did not show remarkable differences during the years sampled, whereas the total fungal spore count was highest in 1988 and 1990.

A comparison between aerobiological and clinical data revealed a good degree of concordance between total pollen counts and positive skin test frequencies for Urticaceae, Gramineae and Oleaceae but not for Compositae (high positive skin reactions and very low counts) and Cupressaceae (high counts and few skin reactions).

A less marked correlation has been found between fungal spore counts and positive skin-test frequencies as compared to pollen. Spores such as Cladosporium, which are present in large number in the air, appear to be less sensitizing, while certain spore types (e.g. Alternaria), seem to be able to sensitize patients in spite of their low atmospheric concentrations.  相似文献

Measurements of atmospheric pollen concentration were made at different sites of the Po Valley, Italy, during the winter of 1978. The concentration was determined with volumetric samplers both near the ground and at different heights up to 500 m. Only Corylus and Alnus pollen grains were found during the experimental period. Due to the large quantity of grains released and the detailed information available about the source areas, the Corylus pollen was used to investigate the features of atmospheric transport. It was found that the three-dimensional patterns of pollen concentration are strongly influenced by meteorological conditions. Moreover, it appears that pollen is present in the atmosphere for a longer time with respect to the emission period, due to the relevant effect of the resuspension of the deposited pollen grains. This effect is detectable at all the sampling points, and not only near the sources.  相似文献

Abstract

Honey is increasingly being used as a food supplement and to treat various diseases and disorders in Ghana. Information on floral nectar preferences of foraging honeybees is, therefore, imperative to increase production to keep pace with demand. However, in Ghana, these floral nectar preferences are yet to be investigated and identified. This study was conducted to determine bee forage sources in the three main agro-ecological honey-producing zones of Ghana. Forty-eight unblended honey samples sourced from beekeepers were analysed. Pollen spectra of the honey samples revealed 27 different pollen types of which eight were identified to family level, while 15 and four were at the level of genus and species, respectively. The results also showed that, in general, 48% of the analysed samples were unifloral honeys with the most important pollen types coming from Sapotaceae/Meliaceae, Anacardiaceae and Burkea africana. Combretaceae, Sapotaceae/Meliaceae and Anacardiaceae, as well as Lannea-type and Burkea africana were found to be the most frequent (with occurrence greater than 50%) sources of nectar utilised by bees to produce honey. The predominant pollen sources of the honeys in the three main apicultural zones of the country were Sapotaceae/Meliaceae and Anacardiaceae (Forest zone), Sapotaceae/Meliaceae and Lannea-type (Savannah–Forest transition zone) and Sapotaceae/Meliaceae, Anacardiaceae and Gynandropsis gynandra (Savannah zones). Identification of the major bee floral sources can be used as a guide by beekeepers in the location of their apiaries as well as reforesting disturbed sites with these plants to act as sources of bee forage.  相似文献

Birch pollen is highly allergenic. Knowledge of daily variations, atmospheric transport and source areas of birch pollen is important for exposure studies and for warnings to the public, especially for large cities such as London. Our results show that broad-leaved forests with high birch tree densities are located to the south and west of London. Bi-hourly Betula pollen concentrations for all the days included in the study, and for all available days with high birch pollen counts (daily average birch pollen counts >80 grains/m3), show that, on average, there is a peak between 1400 hours and 1600 hours. Back-trajectory analysis showed that, on days with high birch pollen counts (n = 60), 80% of air masses arriving at the time of peak diurnal birch pollen count approached North London from the south in a 180 degree arc from due east to due west. Detailed investigations of three Betula pollen episodes, with distinctly different diurnal patterns compared to the mean daily cycle, were used to illustrate how night-time maxima (2200–0400 hours) in Betula pollen counts could be the result of transport from distant sources or long transport times caused by slow moving air masses. We conclude that the Betula pollen recorded in North London could originate from sources found to the west and south of the city and not just trees within London itself. Possible sources outside the city include Continental Europe and the Betula trees within the broad-leaved forests of Southern England.  相似文献

Numerical modelling of pollen dispersion on the regional scale   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
New parameterisations were developed to calculate the emission and resuspension flux of pollen grains. These new parameterisations were included in the comprehensive mesoscale model system KAMM/DRAIS. Two types of simulations were performed. In the first case, horizontally homogeneous meteorology was assumed. In this case, pollen concentration rapidly decreased with the distance from the source. In the second case, where the fully three-dimensional model was applied, atmospheric lifetime of the pollen grains increased remarkably. This was mainly caused by the vertical wind speeds induced by topographic effects. Consequently, the pollen grains could travel much larger distances until they were deposited and finally removed from the atmosphere. This is an important finding with respect to the problem of cross pollination. Due to the lack of measurements, a number of parameters had to be assumed. However, the parameterisation proposed may well serve as a starting point of a daily pollen forecast with numerical models.  相似文献

In northwestern Tibet, an atmospheric pollen sampling was performed weekly during one year (August 1989 to August 1990). Moreover, 18 dust flux samples were obtained in the same region which covers three geographical units: the western margin of the Taklimakan desert, the northern Karakorum and the northwestern Kunlun mountains. The atmospheric pollen results show that the annual pollen frequency is dominated by regional components of montane and alpine desert and steppe, such as Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, Cupressaceae and Poaceae. They also show that pollen taxa derived from much more distant sources such as warm temperate and subtropical humid forest zones are sometimes well represented. It is inferred that the majority of airborne pollen has been carried by wind during the flowering seasons of the plants, and this provides an evaluation of the influence of southerly and southwesterly summer monsoon air movements. The similarity of pollen spectra between dust flux samples and the atmospheric pollen trap from the Kunlun Mountains suggests that the pollen deposition evaluated by the dust flux method is representative of the pollen rain in the studied area. The dust samples from lower altitudes are characterized by high values of Chenopodiaceae and low ratios of Artemisia/Chenopodiaceae which vary clearly with altitude and possibly with moisture level. The Artemisia/Ephedra ratio shows similar variations to A/C. The percentage AP value is generally higher in mountains like Kunlun where the plant cover is extremely low in comparison with semiarid massifs such as Karakorum. Therefore, interpretation of AP pollen in the fossil record must take into account long distance wind transport.  相似文献

Pollen allergies are responsible for a considerable global public health burden, and understanding exposure is critical to addressing the health impacts. Atmospheric pollen counts are routinely used as a predictor of risk; however, immune responses are triggered by specific proteins known as allergens, which occur both within and on the surface of the pollen grain. The ratio between atmospheric pollen counts and allergen concentrations (‘pollen potency’) has been shown to be inconsistent, with potentially important implications for pollen monitoring practice. Despite this, there has been no previous synthesis of the literature and our understanding of the factors that influence pollen potency remains poor. We conducted a scoping review with the aim of deriving a current understanding of: (a) the factors that influence pollen potency; (b) its variation through time, between taxa and by location; and (c) the implications for pollen monitoring practice. Our synthesis found that pollen potency is highly variable within and between seasons, and between locations; however, much of this variability remains unexplained and has not been deeply investigated. We found no predictable pollen potency patterns relating to taxon, geography or time, and inconclusive evidence regarding possible driving factors. With respect to human health, the studies in our synthesis generally reported larger associations between atmospheric allergen loads and allergy symptoms than whole pollen counts. This suggests that pollen potency influences public health risk; however, the evidence base remains limited. Further research is needed to better understand both pollen potency variability and its implications for health.

Abstract

The present paper examines some biological and ultrastructural aspects of fertilization and early development of the embryo in Cytinus hypocistis, a parasitic plant belonging to the Rafflesiaceae. The probable functions of a mucilaginous substance contained in the ovary and embedding the numerous pollen tubes coming from the style are discussed.

It was ascertained that pollen tubes pass through the micropyle and enter a synergid pushing, their way through the nucellar cells that show swollen walls owing to a probable enzymatic action whose function is to facilitate pollen tube penetration. It was hypothesized that the secretion of such enzymes is attributable to the numerous pollen present in the ovary or entering the mycropyle.

Since, in all the ovules observed, synergid degeneration was never found before the arrival of the pollen tube, this degeneration was interpreted as being caused by the material disharged by the pollen tube, rather than being an essential prerequisite for pollen tube penetration into the synergid.

Pollen tube content was observed to be made up of an intensely electron-dense substance surrounding many lipidic globules and numerous polysaccharide vesicles that fuse with the pollen tube wall, clearly contributing to its growth.

The sequence of the first divisions of the developing embryo was followed and the extreme reduction of the embryo is confirmed.

In Cytinus hypocistis starch is totally absent from all the sells belonging to the female gamethophyte as well as to those belonging to the embryo, but lipidic globules are very frequent; it is therefore supposed that these bodies constitute good material for the nutrition of the zygote and early embryo.  相似文献

Pollen loads in the atmosphere of Darwin, a city located in the wet‐dry tropics of Australia, have been monitored for the period March 2004 to November 2005 as part of a large research program looking at atmospheric particles and human health. Seven pollen types dominate the pollen spectrum, the herbaceous families of Poaceae (grasses) and Cyperaceae (sedges), as well as several native tree and shrub taxa, Acacia, Callitris, Casuarina, Arecaceae and Myrtaceae. The pollen loads were found to have a strong seasonal component associated with the alternating wet (November to March) and dry (April to October) seasons of the region. Seventy percent of the yearly pollen load is captured during the dry season, with the peak pollen period occurring at the onset of the dry season (April–May) when most grasses are in flower. The daily pollen concentration decreases as the dry season progresses, accompanied by a change in composition; fewer herbaceous but increasing woody taxa. Preliminary health outcomes reveal a positive association between hay fever, Poaceae and Acacia pollen, as well as a significant association between total fungal spore concentrations and asthma. The Darwin record contrasts significantly with surveys conducted in the subtropical and temperate cities of Australia where temperature as opposed to rainfall and the prevalence of northern hemisphere exotic tree species have a greater influence over the seasonality and composition of the pollen loads.  相似文献

A survey of airborne pollen was conducted during 1984 in the coastal plain of Israel. The flora of that area is continuously changing due to urbanization and agriculture, thus affecting the airborne pollen spectrum.

Significant pollen counts were monitored throughout the year, with a seasonal peak during spring. Meteorological parameters, such as wind velocity, wind direction and temperature affected pollen content of the air. Under certain conditions, even pollen of insect-pollinated plant species was found in the air.

The most conspicuous among the airborne pollen were olive, cypress and pine trees as well as pollen grains from the Poaceae, Amaranthaccae, Chenopodiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae and Urticaccae.

Results indicate that most of the airborne pollen grains were of local origin and from cultivated trees. Thus, it is possible to reduce airborne pollen contaminants around human habitations by selection of the proper non-allergenic ornamental plants.  相似文献

Pollen flow of cultivated rice measured under experimental conditions   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
The pollen flow pattern of a cultivated rice variety, Minghui-63, was studied at horizontal and vertical levels under experimental conditions. Data obtained from pollen traps for six designed populations (as pollen sources) at different intervals showed that the dispersal of rice pollen decreased with the increase of distance from pollen sources and that the rice pollen flow was significantly influenced by weather conditions, particularly by wind direction and speed. For a mean wind speed of 2.52 m/s in a downwind direction, the observed distance of rice pollen dispersal was 38.4 m, indicating that rice pollen grains normally disperse at a relatively small range. However, the maximum distance of rice pollen flow could be up to 110 m, using regression analysis of pollen flow and wind speed, when the wind speed reached 10 m/s in this study. The frequency of pollen flow was positively correlated with pollen source size within a given range, suggesting that pollen flow will occur effectively at a considerable rate in rice fields with sufficiently large pollen sources. In addition, many more pollen grains were detected at the height of 1.0–1.5 m than at 2.0 m, indicating that rice pollen mainly disperses at relatively low heights. Results from this study are useful both for minimizing transgene escape from transgenic rice and in situ conservation of wild relatives of rice, as well as for hybrid seed production, where an effective isolation buffer zone needs to be established.  相似文献

This study aims to determine the potential origin of Olea pollen recorded in Badajoz in the Southwest of the Iberian Peninsula during 2009–2011. This was achieved using a combination of daily average and diurnal (hourly) airborne Olea pollen counts recorded at Badajoz (south-western Spain) and Évora (south-eastern Portugal), an inventory of olive groves in the studied area and air mass trajectory calculations computed using the HYSPLIT model. Examining olive pollen episodes at Badajoz that had distinctly different diurnal cycles in olive pollen in relation to the mean, allowed us to identify three different scenarios where olive pollen can be transported to the city from either distant or nearby sources during conditions with slow air mass movements. Back trajectory analysis showed that olive pollen can be transported to Badajoz from the West on prevailing winds, either directly or on slow moving air masses, and from high densities of olive groves situated to the Southeast (e.g. Andalucía). Regional scale transport of olive pollen can result in increased nighttime concentrations of this important aeroallergen. This could be particularly important in Mediterranean countries where people can be outdoors during this time due to climate and lifestyle. Such studies that examine sources and the atmospheric transport of pollen are valuable for allergy sufferers and health care professionals because the information can be incorporated into forecasts, the outputs of which are used for avoiding exposure to aeroallergens and planning medication. The results of studies of this nature can also be used for examining gene flow in this important agricultural crop.  相似文献

Summary The circadian periodicity of the five allergologically most important pollen types in S. Finland and two different spore types were studied at two sites, about 200 meters apart: one Burkard sampler situated on a roof at a height of 15 meters and the other on a garden lawn at ground level. The circadian rhythms of pollen released close to the ground (herb pollen) did not correlate at the two sampling heights used. Variations in pollen from high sources (trees) were significantly correlated at the two heights used. The circadian rhythms of spores from low source distant from the sampling sites (Suillus as an example of forest fungi) were not always correlated; instead, spores with sources at different heights (Cladosporium as an example) had similar circadian periodicity not depending on the sampling level. It was shown that, when studying circadian rhythms of atmospheric particles, the sampling height used is often of great importance. Circadian rhythms of the same pollen and spore types for ten years at the higher sampling site are presented for long-term comparison.  相似文献

Beschorneria yuccoides (Agavaceae) microspores are arranged mostly in planar tetrads. Later on, the pollen grains of the tetrad usually fall apart, but sometimes remain loosely connected by ektexine elements. The ektexine consists of a tectum, of short columellae, and of a thin, discontinuous foot layer. An endexine is absent. The bilayered intine is without any additional thickening that would usually indicate an aperture region. From this point of view the pollen grain might be considered as omniaperturate. The pollen ornamentation is reticulate with wide lumina and robust, smooth muri.

The pollen grains show an indistinct sulcus characterised by a loose reticulate ornamentation. The sulcus is not exactly at the distal pole, but shifted towards the equator. No pollen tubes are formed regularly at the sulcus. Instead, pollen tubes are normally formed at the proximal pollen face. The proximal area, indicating a large germination field, is morphologically and functionally clearly an aperture (a germination zone); however, it does not represent a sulcus. The proximal face of all pollen grains appears as ornamented, with some exine lumps.

Asimina triloba (Annonaceae) pollen is shed in permanent planar or decussate tetrads. The distal sides are microreticulate to foveolate, and do not show an aperture; the psilate proximal sides are the germination areas of A. triloba.

The presence of apertures placed at the proximal pole was reported for distinct taxa of several angiosperm families. For Drosera, Dionaea (Droseraceae) and most probably for the diaperturate Cuphea species (Lythraceae) the existence of polar germination areas can be excluded. However, in some Annonaceae taxa with permanent tetrads (Annona cherimola, Asimina triloba) a situation similar to Beschorneria might be present, and indeed a proximal polar pollen tube is formed. Beschorneria yuccoides, Annona cherimola and Asimina triloba are unequivocal examples of angiosperm pollen with an exactly proximal aperture (germination area).  相似文献

Atmospheric deposition can be an important source of phosphorus (P) to watersheds in geologically low-P landscapes like the Precambrian Shield, in south-central Ontario. Recent observations in this region of declining total P (TP) concentrations in streams and lakes, as well as P limitation in vegetation, prompted this investigation into the potential contributing role of atmospheric deposition. Long-term (1980–2014) measurements of bulk TP deposition at four monitoring stations, as well as wet-only deposition at one of the sites (2012–2014) and pollen measurements in 2014, were used to assess the potential contribution of biogenic sources to TP deposition in the region. Ratios of phosphorus to potassium (P:K) in historical bulk deposition and variability in P deposition among the four sites indicated that continuously open, bulk deposition collectors are enriched in ‘local’ biogenic sources of P, particularly in the summer, fall and spring months. Furthermore, in 2014 pollen could account for as much as 30% of bulk TP deposition, and pine trees (Pinus strobus) were the most important source of pollen (>75% of collected pollen). In contrast, winter bulk deposition was the least affected by local, biogenic sources, and likely best reflects net P inputs to this region from long-range (that is, external to the watershed) sources. Catchment input–output budgets for P that use measured annual bulk deposition totals as inputs are generally strongly positive (indicating net retention/accumulation of P within watersheds), whereas annual budgets calculated using extrapolated winter deposition are in approximate balance. Balanced P budgets are more consistent with regional observations of declining surface water TP and P limitation in terrestrial vegetation. Importantly, there was no significant decline in winter TP deposition over the period of record (1980–2014), which suggests that changes in regional deposition are not responsible for declines in surface water TP. Although we recommend extrapolating winter bulk deposition measurements to approximate annual atmospheric TP input to terrestrial ecosystems in non-dusty, oligotrophic landscapes such as this, local sources of P, particularly pollen, are likely important seasonal sources of P nutrition to lakes.  相似文献

S-RNase was demonstrated to be predominantly recognized by an S locus F-box-like protein and an S haplotype-specific F-box-like protein in compatible pollen tubes of sweet cherry.

Abstract

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a reproductive barrier that rejects self-pollen and inhibits self-fertilization to promote outcrossing. In Solanaceae and Rosaceae, S-RNase-based gametophytic SI (GSI) comprises S-RNase and F-box protein(s) as the pistil and pollen S determinants, respectively. Compatible pollen tubes are assumed to detoxify the internalized cytotoxic S-RNases to maintain growth. S-RNase detoxification is conducted by the Skp1-cullin1-F-box protein complex (SCF) formed by pollen S determinants, S locus F-box proteins (SLFs), in Solanaceae. In Prunus, the general inhibitor (GI), but not pollen S determinant S haplotype-specific F-box protein (SFB), is hypothesized to detoxify S-RNases. Recently, SLF-like proteins 1–3 (SLFL1–3) were suggested as GI candidates, although it is still possible that other proteins function predominantly in GI. To identify the other GI candidates, we isolated four other pollen-expressed SLFL and SFB-like (SFBL) proteins PavSLFL6, PavSLFL7A, PavSFBL1, and PavSFBL2 in sweet cherry. Binding assays with four PavS-RNases indicated that PavSFBL2 bound to PavS1, 6-RNase while the others bound to nothing. PavSFBL2 was confirmed to form an SCF complex in vitro. A co-immunoprecipitation assay using the recombinant PavS6-RNase as bait against pollen extracts and a mass spectrometry analysis identified the SCF complex components of PavSLFLs and PavSFBL2, M-locus-encoded glutathione S-transferase (MGST), DnaJ-like protein, and other minor proteins. These results suggest that SLFLs and SFBLs could act as predominant GIs in Prunus-specific S-RNase-based GSI.

Few atmospheric pollen surveys have been conducted during the winter months in cities located in the midlatitudes. The purpose of this present investigation was to study pollen conditions during the winter in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city that experiences cold temperatures and develops substantial snow cover. One hundred thirty‐three atmospheric samples were collected with a Rotorod Sampler between 11 October 1995 and 1 May 1996. Pollen was recovered in 109 samples, including 27 of the 40 samples collected in December and January. Twenty‐five types of pollen were observed during the study period; Cupressaceae (cedar/juniper), Ambrosia (ragweed) and Artemisia (sage/sagebrush) grains were most abundant during the period when local plants were not flowering. The weed pollen was most likely contributed by local sources, perhaps by dried flowers on dead plants. In contrast, the Cupressaceae pollen recovered in October and the early winter months is thought to have originated in the southern United States where several species of Juniperus flower late in the year. This study demonstrated that low but measurable concentrations of pollen occurred in the atmosphere throughout the winter.  相似文献

Monitoring atmospheric fern spore and pollen loads in Singapore was initiated in June 1990. Aside from the more numerous fungal spores, fern spores and pollen grains made up 6.2–8.6% and 4.4–5.4% of the total airspora sampled, respectively. The most frequently encountered fern spores, in descending order, were those of Nephrolepis auriculata, Dicranopteris linearis, Stenochlaena palustris, Asplenium nidus, Pteridium aquilinum, and Dicranopteris curranii. For pollen grains, the most frequently encountered, in descending order, were Elaeis guineensis, Casuarina equisetifolia, Acacia auriculiformis, Kyllingia polyphylla, Podocarpus, and Poaceae pollen grains. Seasonal patterns for individual fern spore or pollen types were discernible despite the relatively uniform tropical climate in Singapore. The fern spore and pollen calendar for the period 1991–1995 was compared to that of 2005–2006 as a follow-up study to keep abreast with the rapidly changing landscape of Singapore. Diurnal patterns showing a late morning to afternoon peak period were seen in fern spores, while the peak period was in the morning for pollen types studied with the exception to oil palm pollen. Additionally, association between fern spore and pollen counts and local meteorological conditions were also analyzed and found to be highly correlated. This study has thus identified the fern spores and pollen airspora components, and determined the calendars, as well as diurnal profiles of the Singapore airspora and provides invaluable information for allergy studies by highlighting the trigger sources present in the environment.  相似文献
