The frequency of fungal spores in the air of three different sections of a rural bakery was analyzed using a Burkard personal slide sampler and Andersen two stage viable sampler. In average concentration of spores (No./m3) was 228–26770/m3 and concentration of viable colony forming units (CFU/m3) was 65-2061 CFU/m3. Dominant fungus species both culturable and nonculturable, were species of Aspergillus and Penicillium, Cladosporiumsp., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Penicillium citrinum and Alternaria alternata. Seasonal variations in the spore concentrations were clearly observed in case of some fungi. Total culturable mould concentration of different bakery sections sometimes exceeded the acceptable limit for a healthy indoor environment. Antigenic extracts prepared from some dominant culturable fungi showed high level of allergenicity in skin prick tests indicating that they could be responsible for allergic respiratory dysfunction of bakery workers. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A study of the ecology of fungi associated with moist stored barley grain was carried out on samples from a partially sealed silo in Cumberland. Samples were collected during harvest and after storage at high moisture content in a partially sealed silo. At harvest, the field fungi Alternaria, Fusarium, Cladosporium and Mucor spp. were dominant both in the husks and in the dehusked, surface-sterilized grain but they were rapidly succeeded by the storage fungi: Aspergillus, Penicillium and Absidia spp. then constituted about 80 % of the initial invasion. At this stage internal grain infection rarely exceeded 5 % compared to 65–80 % infection in the husks. In subsequent months, there was a remarkable increase in invasion, mainly by Penicillium, Aspergillus and Absidia spp. and by yeasts, which appeared both in the husks and in dehusked grain. In the third month of storage, Penicillium cyclopium, P. roqueforti, Absidia corymbifera, Aspergillus candidus, A. terreus and yeasts became dominant. The thermophilous species Aspergillus fumigatus, A. terreus, Absidia corymbifera, Mucorpusillus and Dactylomyces crustaceus were isolated from husks and in dehusked grain incubated at 37 and 45 °C. Most grains were infected significantly by single genera.  相似文献

The mycoflora of indoor non-industrial environments is reported from “case” studies in The Netherlands. Both air sampling by a RCS-Reutcr centrifugal air sampler and surface sampling by swabs and cellotape preparations were carried out in homes, archives and libraries, musea, offices and schools. Common species encountered in these indoor environments are Aspergillus versicolor, Penicillium brevicompactum, P. chrysogenum, Cladosporium spp. and the xerophilic fungi Eurotium spp. and Wallemia sebi. Aspergillus fumigatus, Scopulariopsis spp. and Stachybotrys chartarum were occasionally isolated. It is not always possible to detect the mycoflora growing on surfaces by air sampling. Therefore direct microscopical examination and sampling from surfaces in addition to air sampling is strongly recommended for the detection of viable moulds in indoor environments. Selection of the most suitable media for isolation of fungi is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The fungal airspora of a large hospital in Delhi Metropolis was studied from May 1989 – April 1991, using Andersen Six Stage Volumetric Sampler and Burkard Personal Slide Sampler. Simultaneously, samples were also collected from outside the hospital to act as a control. Samplers were operated for 10 min. each time, at 10 - day intervals. Additional samples were also collected from different sections of 3 other hospitals. Some of the dominant forms encountered wereCladosporium spp.,Aspergillus flavus, Smut,Fusarium spp.,Aspergillus niger, Alternaria spp.,Penicillium citrinum, Aspergillus versicolor, andPenicillium oxalicum. Aspergillus flavus showed significantly high concentration inside hospital (n=66, x=53 CFU m–3, p<0.05) as compared to outside air. The peak period for fungi was observed to be from June – September. The spore concentration was much lower in hospital units receiving filtered air as compared to control environment, but in naturally ventilated hospitals the concentration was similar to that of outside air.  相似文献

The purpose of this epidemiological study was to assess respiratory allergy in relation to the presence of indoor airborne fungi. The relationship between IgE-mediated respiratory allergy (skin test positivity) and the presence of fungi (CFU/m3) in the indoor environments of 104 subjects was assessed in a cross-sectional study by controlling for extraneous variables (age, gender, predisposition, asthma, rhinitis, skin positivity to ragweed and mite, and smoking). The qualitative and quantitative measurements of airborne seasonal fungi (Alternaria spp. andCladosporium spp.) and non-seasonal airborne fungi (Penicillium spp. andAspergillus spp.) were taken in the subjects’ indoor environments twice in a 2-year period by volumetric methods (Burkard Personal Sampler). There was a significant association between skin test positivity to seasonal fungi and to ragweed (Adj. OR=3.42, CI=1.76–6.66). There was no association between skin test positivity to seasonal fungi and asthma (Adj. OR=0.52, CI=0.28–0.98), but a significant association was found between skin test positivity to seasonal fungi and rhinitis (Adj. OR=5, CI=2.03–12.32). In a logistic regression analysis (maximum likelihood estimates—model A), no statistical association was found indoors between skin prick test positivity to seasonal fungi (Alternaria and/orCladosporium) and airborneAlternaria and/orCladosporium concentrations (Adj. OR=1.18, CI=0.66–2.07). There was a significant association between skin prick test positivity to seasonal fungi and to non-seasonal fungi (Adj. OR=12.81, CI=1.67–98.34). There was no association between asthma and airbornePenicillium concentrations (Adj. OR=1.86, CI=0.47–7.33) nor between rhinitis and airbornePenicillium concentrations (Adj. OR=0.18, CI=0.03–1.19). In another logistic regression analysis (maximum likelihood estimates — model B) using non-seasonal fungi (Aspergillus andPenicillium), no statistical association was found indoors between skin prick test positivity to non-seasonal fungi and airbornePenicillium concentrations (Adj. OR=0.33, CI=0.07–1.69). These findings suggest an association between rhinitis and seasonal fungi. In the rhinitis stratum, subjects who had skin test positivity to ragweed had a higher risk of being sensitive to seasonal airborne fungal allergens. Subjects with non-seasonal fungal allergy had a high relative risk if they were also allergic to seasonal fungi. There was no association between asthma and airborne fungi, as the epidemiological study (cross-sectional design), by definition, does not allow an etiological evaluation of chronic disease. This would require a longitudinal study, i.e. the measurement of repeated exposure as an independent variable (allergen) and repeated measurement as a function of the disease as outcome in humans as a dependent variable.  相似文献

The mycoflora of dried-salted fish from markets in Kandy, Sri Lanka was studied with emphasis on visibly spoiled dried fish. A total of 61 fungal isolates from 25 dried-fish were isolated and identified. The most prevalent fungus wasAspergillus niger. Species ofAspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. glaucus, A. restrictus, Aureobasidium spp.Basipetospora halophila (a genuinely halophilic fungus)Cladosporium herbarum, Gliomastix, spp.,Penicillium chalybeum andPenicillium expansum were present. The isolated fungi did not grow in synthetic media containing more than 30% sodium chloride.Aureobasidium spp. andGliomastix spp. did not grow on dried-fish under laboratory conditions. The protective exoskeleton appeared to prevent fungal growth on dried shrimp. TheA. flavus strains isolated were not aflatoxigenic.  相似文献

The occurrence of fungal spores in the upper respiratory tract and in the homes of 86 patients with allergic manifestations and positive skin tests for fungi has been investigated.Alternaria tenuis andCladosporium herbarum have been more frequently found to give positive reactions, followed byAspergillus mix,Candida albicans andPenicillium notatum. Cladosporium andAlternaria represented also the most common moulds isolated from nasal specimens. The prevalent fungi isolated from patients' environments wereCladosporium, Penicillium andAlternaria, occurring respectively in 93%, 78% and 72% of the homes sampled. An examination of individual cases have revealed a surprisingly close correlation, in 47 out of 86 patients, between positive skin test response and presence in high amount of the same fungi in patient's respiratory tract and home. In the majority of cases the fungi involved wereAlternaria and/orCladosporium.  相似文献

The qualitative fungal composition of Turin 's atmospheric environment was surveyed, carrying out a twelve-month study and collecting with a single stage volumetric sieve sampler on Dermasel agar supplemented with 0.4 g l–1 cycloheximide and 0.05 g l–1 chloramphenicol. We isolated 165 species and 2 varieties of mesophilic fungi from 58 genera and 26 thermotolerant species from 12 genera. Penicillium, Aspergillus, Acremonium, Chrysosporium, Scopulariopsis, Malbranchea, Paecilomyces, Phialophora and Cladosporium were in sequence the genera most rich in mesophilic species; Aspergillus, Penicillium, Chrysosporium and Scopulariopsis the most rich in thermotolerant species. Many of the species isolated are rarely or never recorded in the atmospheric environment. Cycloheximide can thus be said to select among airborne fungi, giving a characteristic picture.Abbreviation CH Cycloheximide - cfu colony forming unit  相似文献

A systemic study of fungal endophytes associated with different plant parts of Cannabis sativa and their antifungal activity was investigated in the present study. A total of 281 plant segments, including 91 leaves, 93 stem and 97 petioles samples, were screened for the isolation of endophytic fungi. Totally, 212 (77.65%) segments were found colonised by different fungi. Highest colonisation frequency were observed in stem parts (84.94%), then leaves (82.41%) and lowest 59.79% in petiole. Total eight fungal genera belonging to 12 species were isolated. Aspergillus is recorded as the most frequently occurring genera with three species Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus nidulans followed by Penicillium with two species Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium citrinum, while Phoma, Rhizopus, Colletotrichum, Cladosporium and Curvularia with single species. The antifungal potential of A. niger and A. flavus – two most frequently isolated endophytic fungi – was evaluated against two common plant pathogen, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Curvularia lunata. Different plant and fungal extracts individually and in combinations showed variations in antifungal activity against both the pathogens. The primary results obtained on antifungal activity of endophytes show their possible role in plant defence mechanism but it is a preliminary approach and more extensive research is still required.  相似文献

The mycoflora of a range of mixed ruminant feed and forage samples collected in Eastern India and Bangladesh were determined. Most fungi isolated from the samples were those associated with low moisture contents. Several potentially mycotoxigenic fungi and thermotolerant species were present particularly in the rice straw. The most frequently isolated fungi were: Aspergillus versicolor (Vuill.) Tiraboschi, Penicillium citrinum Thorn, Eurotium species, Wallemia sebi (Fr.) v. Arx, Aspergillus penicilloides Speg. and yeasts. Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon and Cladosporium species were prevalent in straw but not other feeds. Levels of certain individual fungi, particularly thermotolerant types, were higher in Bangladesh rice straw although overall counts were similar to those of the Indian samples. Mycotoxin analyses for aflatoxins, zearalenone and sterigmatocystin were carried out. Aflatoxins were detected in significant amounts in some feed samples from Eastern India but not in rice straw from India and Bangladesh. Zearalenone occurred in a Paspalum straw sample and three other feed samples from India and sterigmatocystin was detected in three rice straw samples from Bangladesh.  相似文献

A survey was carried out in Reunion island to obtain data on the occurrence of fungi, aflatoxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus, aflatoxins, total aerobic bacteria and salmonellae of 150 samples of mixed poultry feeds and raw materials. These were collected at five farms over a 3-month period during the warm rainy season.White corn and Brazilian soybean meal seemed to present a better microbiological quality than yellow corn and US soybean meal.Mixed poultry feeds presented a high total mold count reflecting the mold flora of raw materials. The most frequent and abundant fungi were Aspergillus flavus, A. glaucus group, Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., A. candidus, Mucor spp., A. restrictus, Scopulariopsis spp., Cladosporium spp. and A. versicolor. Of the 118 A. flavus strains screened, 42 (35.6%) were aflatoxigenic. Yellow corn samples were the most frequently contamined with aflatoxigenic strains (54.5%), followed by mixed feeds (44%).Of the 66 samples tested, 24 (36%) contained aflatoxins (traces to 22 ng/g). A good correlation seemed to exist between presence of at least one aflatoxigenic strain per sample and presence of aflatoxins.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To examine associations between reported respiratory symptoms (as elicited by questionnaire) and subsequent mortality. DESIGN--Prospective cohort study. SETTING--92 General practices in Great Britain. PARTICIPANTS--A nationally representative sample of 1532 British men and women aged between 40 and 64. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and chronic bronchitis. RESULTS--Subjects were interviewed in 1958 regarding various respiratory symptoms (including cough, phlegm, breathlessness, and wheeze) by using a questionnaire which formed the basis of the Medical Research Council''s questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. By the end of 1985, 889 deaths had been reported, including 51 in men due to chronic bronchitis. After adjustment for differences in age and smoking habits death rates from chronic bronchitis in men who reported symptoms were greater than those in men who did not for each of the symptoms examined. The adjusted mortality ratios were 3.4 (95% confidence interval 1.8 to 6.5) for morning cough, 3.7 (2.0 to 6.9) for morning phlegm, 6.4 (3.0 to 13.8) for breathlessness when walking on the level, and 10.5 (4.4 to 24.6) for wheeze most days or nights. Mortality ratios were also significantly raised for four episodic symptoms not usually included in more recent respiratory symptom questionnaires--namely, occasional wheeze (mortality ratio 6.0; 95% confidence interval, 2.4 to 15.1), weather affects chest (5.7; 3.1 to 10.3), breathing different in summer (4.9; 2.8 to 8.6), and cold usually goes to chest (3.7; 2.0 to 6.8). The excess mortality associated with these symptoms remained significant after further adjustment for breathlessness or phlegm. Ratios for all cause mortality in men and women were also significantly raised for most respiratory symptoms, death rates being some 20-50% higher in people reporting symptoms after adjustment for age, sex, and smoking. Breathlessness was the only symptom significantly associated with excess mortality from cardiovascular disease (mortality ratio 1.4 (95% confidence interval 1.0 to 1.9) for breathlessness when walking on the level). Ratios were generally around unity and not significant for mortality due to lung cancer. CONCLUSIONS--The results suggest that episodic symptoms, which often do not appear in standard respiratory questionnaires, predict subsequent mortality from chronic obstructive airways disease. This supports the hypothesis that reversible airflow obstruction may be a precursor of progressive and irreversible decline in ventilatory function.  相似文献

Sixteen species of fungi were isolated from the pericarp, endosperm, scutellum, and embryo of low (<75% germination), moderate (75–89%), and high vigor (>89%) seedlots of supersweet sweet corn (sh2) hybrids over two years. Most frequently isolated species werePenicillium oxalicum, Rhizopus arrhizus (14.5%), andRhizopus spp (17.4%).Fusarium moniliforme, a common inhabitant in field or dent corn, was isolated from only 2.4% of the samples. The low mean isolation values may be the result of poor conditions for infection or the data may reflect the methods used including sterilization techniques or random tissue selection.Aspergillus niger, F. moniliforme, andP. oxalicum, were isolated at a significantly greater level than other fungi from the high vigor hybrids at 0.89, 0.46 m and 4.46 respectively compared to 0.04, 0, and 1.82 for the low vigor hybrids. When Total Fungi were compared mean isolations were significantly greater from the high vigor hybrids at 11.96, the moderate 8.79, or low 4.86 vigor groups. When data from seed sources for all vigor groups were compared, significantly greater mean isolations were obtained from Illinois Foundation Seed hybrids forCladosporium sp,R. arrhizus, andRhizopus spp., but greater rates were obtained forFusarium oxysporum from the Asgrow hybrids. Isolation frequencies for the 16 species were not significantly different between the seed tissue types from any of the hybrids evaluated during this investigation. Results from this study showed that there is a diverse group of fungi present within thesh2 seed and seed treatments must be developed which will minimize seed rot and seedling blight from both internal seedborne and external pathogens.  相似文献

The importance of opportunistic fungal pathogens in causing ocular infections is emphasized. A study was conducted over a period of 4 years (1974–1977) to investigate the role of opportunistic fungi in causing mycotic keratitis and to elucidate certain aspects of epidemiology of this disease in Nigeria. Fifty-nine cases of corneal ulcers of suspected mycotic etiology were investigated. Fungal etiology was confirmed in 42 of these cases. The predominant etiological agent was Fusarium solani in 14 cases (33.33%) followed by Penicillium citrinum in 8 cases (19.04%) and Aspergillus fumigatus in 5 cases (11.90%). The yeasts were responsible for only 3 cases (7.14%) i.e. one each caused by Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. guilliermondii. Among the remaining 12 cases, one was caused by F. moniliforme, 3 by A. flavus, 2 each by A. niger, Penicillium expansum and Penicillium sp., and one each by Cladosporium cladosporioides and Cladosporium sp. The clinical features of the cases are briefly described. The incidence of mycotic keratitis in relation to sex, age, occupation, trauma and other factors has been analysed. Corneal trauma appeared to be an important predisposing factor as 27 (67.28%) of the patients gave a history of injuries to the eye. Notably, a large number of patients were farmers and trauma was most often from palm tree leaf, thorn, kernel or other plant objects. Topical application of corticosteroids or broad spectrum antibiotics did not seem to play an important role in the etiology of keratomycosis. Cases were recorded throughout the year although the number of cases was higher in the months of March –May, and November–December than that during the rest of the year. The isolates of the causative agents were studied in detail for their morphological and cultural characters. The isolates of F. solani grew well at 37°C and survived at 40°C for more than 3 weeks. In vitro drug sensitivity tests indicated good antifungal activity of pimaricin and econazole for F. solani, clotrimazole and econazole for Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus and Penicillium citrinum, and 5-fluorocytosine for Candida spp.Investigations on the incidence of fungi in normal healthy eyes of 450 persons comprising 204 adults and 246 children yielded 204 isolates belonging to 21 genera of fungi. Cladosporium was most frequent (12.88%) followed by Penicillium (10.22%) and Aspergillus (6.66%). Another important fungus was Fusarium represented by 10 isolates, viz. 4 of F. solani, 2 of F. moniliforme, 1 of F. exysporum, and 3 of Fusarium sp. The yeasts were represented by two isolates each of Candida tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. krusei, Trichosporon sp and Cryptococcus albidus, and one of Candida guilliermondii. Successive culturing of fungi from normal eyes in a small group indicated that fungi occur in the outer eye generally as transients. The epidemiology of mycotic keratitis has been discussed in relation to the present findings and in comparison with observations of other investigators.  相似文献

Fungal spores are important aeroallergens and proper knowledge of their qualitative and quantitative prevalence in indoor and outdoor environments is of paramount importance in the study of allergic disorders. The present investigation was aimed at the study of seasonal and annual prevalence of fungi inside a large grain storage facility. Sampling was carried out from September 1989 to August 1991. Although fungal spores occurred throughout the year there was seasonal variation.Aspergillus flavus. Cladosporium spp.Epicoccum nigrum and basidiospores had a definite seasonal pattern.Aspergillus flavus andUstilago (smuts) were the most predominant fungi in the facility. Their concentration was significantly higher (P<0.05) than in outside air. The need to reduce fungal concentration in grain storage is emphasised.  相似文献

Air-borne fungi at Doha, Qatar   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Thirty-five genera and 73 species, were identifiedfrom 312 daily exposures set up during theperiod March 1997–March 1998. The total fungalcatch exhibited two peaks in July and December1997 and a trough in February 1998. Cladosporium (6 spp. 40.1% of total fungi),Alternaria (4 spp., 21%) andUlocladium (4 spp., 9.2%) were the maincomponents of air-borne fungi, and thecommonest species were Cladosporium.sphaerospermum (29.7%), C.cladosporioides (6.9%), Alternaria.alternata (13.9%) and U. atrum (5%).The predominance of these dark-coloured fungiin air is discussed and is attributed to one orboth of two hypotheses. Aspergillus (9spp., 4.3%) and Penicillium (8 spp.,3.95%) came next and were represented mainlyby A.niger (1.3%) andP. chrysogenum (2.4%).Spore showers of C.cladosporioides, C. sphaerospermum, Penicillium chrysogenum and Myrotheciumverrucaria were noticed with no regularseasonal pattern. The monthly number of species ranalmost parallel to the total count of fungi. The broadest species spectrum (25–29 spp.) wasrecorded in the summer months May–August 1997and the narrowest (11–12 spp.) in February andMarch 1998.The highest monthly wind velocity wasregularly associated with higher fungal colonycounts than in case of the lowest velocity. Onthe other hand, wind direction did not exhibitany regular correlation either with the colonycounts of fungi or with the wind velocity. Highwind velocity could bring more fungal spores tobe sedimented on the surface of exposed agar.Diurnal fluctuations of fungal spores offungi displayed one peak at 12 noon when thehighest temperature and wind velocity, and theleast relative humidity were recorded and onetrough at midnight.  相似文献

Fungal spores are an important component of library air   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The airborne fungal spore types were studied in different libraries in Delhi, using an Andersen sampler and a Burkard personal sampler, for culturable and non-culturable fungi respectively. The concentration inside the libraries, before and after the agitation of books, were compared with outside air. The major contributors to the library air areCladosporium, aspergilli/penicillia, smuts andAlternaria, varying from 50 to 14%. Some fungi (Cladosporium, Alternaria, smut,Penicillium chrysogenum andnigricans) showed seasonal occurrence, corresponding to their occurrence in the extramural environment. Aspergilli/penicillia,Drechslera, Curvularia andAspergillus flavus had a significantly higher concentration (P<0.01) inside the library, and recorded a significant increase in concentration after agitation of books. Air-conditioned libraries have low fungal spore concentrations, as compared to naturally ventilated libraries.  相似文献

Forty-four fungal species belonging to 20 genera were isolated from 30 samples of qat leaves. The most frequent genera wereAspergillus, Alternaria, Penicillium, andCladosporium followed byFusarium, Drechslera, Chœtomium, andMucor. The most prevalent species in above genera wereAspergillus niger, A. flavus, A fumigatus, Alternaria alternata, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. citrinum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, andFusarium verticillioides. From these fungi, 17 species (39%) related to 7 genera (35%) proved to be true endophytes. Eleven out of 75 isolates were mycotoxigenic.A. alternata produced alternariol and alternariol monomethyl ether whereasA. flavus produced aflatoxins B1 and B2. Ochratoxin A, sterigmatocystin, citrinin and T-2 toxin were produced byA. ochraceus, A. versicolor, P. citrinum andF. oxysporum, respectively. The presence of such toxigenic fungi associated with qat leaves is considered to be a threat to public health.  相似文献
