The mobilization of the countryside has direct consequences for political discourse about national values and in times of social crisis, the ‘conservatism’ of the countryside has the potential to assume an aggressive, offensive posture. When rural mobilization is accompanied by religious revival, group loyalty and so‐called ‘traditional’ values are sacralized. When rural mobilization, ethnic mobilization, and religious revival occur simultaneously, it signifies that the society is undergoing profound destabilization. Examining the case of Serbia, this article argues that while Serbia is, in cultural and social terms, predominantly rural in character, Titoist Communism imposed the values of the city on that culture, while the 1987 coup by Slobodan Milosevic represented, among other things, the triumph of the countryside over the city in Serbia. This article begins by characterizing the countryside in cultural terms, provides documentation of the importance of rural traditions in Serbian society, documents the rural character of the Serbian national movement, connecting its ideology and behaviour with populist appeals, and examines the contribution made by the Serbian Orthodox Church to the mobilization of the Serbian countryside. 相似文献

The paper describes and analyzes how the practitioner modified his usual clinical performance and adapted his actions to demands of an extremely difficult situation. ‘After the break’: re-conceptualizing ethnicity,national identity and ‘Malaysian-Chinese’ identities

Focusing on ethnic Chinese as cultural citizens of the nation, this paper examines national identity in the context of generational change. In so doing, it connects to colonialist conceptions of identity the dominant framework of ethnicity that operates in Malaysia. It argues that this framework allows for the nationalist imagining of ‘Malaysian-Chinese’ as ‘outsiders’. In probing the complex conceptual relationship between ethnicity, national identity and cultural citizenship, this article asks: How does ‘ethnicity’ enter into negotiations over the ‘national’ in the cultural realm? What are the notions of cultural difference and national otherness that operate in the negative dualisms by which nation and ethnicity are defined? How are these dualisms tied to notions of authenticity and cultural citizenship? Using the novel The Harmony Silk Factory by Malaysian author Tash Aw to address these questions, this paper argues the need to rethink current policies and narratives of ethnic and national identity in Malaysia. 相似文献

The peasant markets of the western highlands of Guatemala present a field of public solidarity and constitute sources of sociocultural information. The information is expressed in the specific physical arrangements and in the types of interactions carried out in each context. The open, quasi festive plaza presents one model of and for behavior that corresponds to the traditional Indian conceptual framework, the public reunion strengthens the group solidarity and serves as a barrier against external aggression. The compartmentalized enclosed market, instead, follows and serves as a model which corresponds to Ladino conceptual guidelines, one which emphasizes the power of the product over the ethnic category as an organizational parameter. The traditional open plaza constitutes a communitas‐type framework where multiple interactions are peacefully conducted and the ‘Other’ is identified through the practice of bargaining. 相似文献

This article examines how Korean Americans use the cultural resources of religious communities to mediate race, ethnic, and socio-economic boundaries that have consequences for civic life. Specifically, I compare involvement of Korean Americans in second-generation Korean congregations to those in multiethnic churches. I find Korean Americans who participate in second-generation Korean churches use religion to largely reproduce images of Korean Americans as model minorities, and implicitly distance themselves from those whom they perceive as less financially successful. In contrast, Korean Americans in multiethnic congregations use religion to emphasize the commonality Korean Americans have with other minorities. By using a cultural framework that allows for the agency of individuals in identity and group boundary construction, this work more generally shows the potential for new Americans to use the cultural resources of local organizations to change existing ethnic and racial boundaries in the United States. 相似文献

AbstractThis paper explores how the creation of a socially and ethnically mixed student body relates to mobility within the context of Beaumont Academy. This authoritarian school opened in 2004 under the ethos ‘structure liberates’. Based in a predominantly deprived, ethnic minority area of London, Beaumont seeks to culturally transform its students. With its outstanding GCSE results, the school has been championed as a blueprint for reform, yet the cultural implications underlying this approach remain unexamined. The ethos pathologizes the surrounding area while essentializing itself as an ‘oasis in the desert’ liberating students through discipline. The paper explores how mobility is embodied by students and the alterations or eliminations necessary to achieve it. These alterations produce raced and classed positions and bring them into focus, highlighting who needs to ‘adjust’ themselves to accrue value. Uncritical celebrations of mixed-ness conceal structural inequalities lingering beneath the rhetoric of happy multiculturalism and aspirational citizenship. These inequalities are exacerbated by a marketized education system. 相似文献

More than broadly agreeing on the need for a critical deconstruction of the very foundations of anthropological theory and practice aimed at uncovering the elements implicitly excluded from analysis, the silences in a reasoning process and the blind spots in observations, the author stresses need to distinguish between this kind of deconstruction, which is positive and essential for any knowledge-building activity, and another deconstruction which can lead to hyper-relativism. The second tendency, baptized 'postmodernism' and highly popular in the USA, is a largely overblown enterprise of deconstructive dissolution which, if carried to its logical conclusion, threatens to submerge social anthropology in the rising tide of 'Cultural Studies'. Postmodernist theory is a somewhat eclectic mixture of (often contradictory) ideas borrowed from such French thinkers as Foucault, Derrida and Lyotard, which is advanced in support of the idea that a 'science of man', in other words, a set of systematic observations, analyses and findings subjected to testing and verification, is not possible. While the ethnography of contemporary courtrooms has been dominated by a concern with speech, this article considers how a silent, validating public is constructed within court complexes. Drawing on fieldwork at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (Arusha, Tanzania), I explore how the court's threshold practices form validating witnesses whose embodied deference contributes to the constitution of the courtroom as a space of privileged speech. I suggest, therefore, that court spectators are not incidental, but are integral to juridical spectacle and the authority of law. 相似文献

Summary Biochemical control involves steep and hysteretic response. But the law of mass action does not allow for cooperativity. Therefore resort is classically made to concerted conformational change of protomers. This explanation of steepness and hysteresis by cooperativity is supported by regular surface patterns often observed by electron microscopy. But at other times the lattice appearance which gave rise to the lattice model is not observed. By contrast, a random appearance is observed and the fluid mosaic model of the membrane is assumed. So we are faced with the choice between the fluid mosaic model and the lattice model. Recently the fluid mosaic model is favoured but unlike the lattice model it does not explain the steep hyteretic response.It is suggested that the lattice model and the fluid mosaic model are in fact expression of two states of the very same membrane. The random state corresponds to a resting state. The lattice state corresponds to an active or inhibited state. Thus the transition from random distribution to hexagonal distribution provides simultaneously for triggering and hysteretic cycle with respect to both chemical production and transport across the membrane. This is a universal mechanism for rapid responsiveness and cyclic activity which is largely independent of the chemical mechanism assumed. It is based on the law of mass action supplemented by lateral diffusion. Conformational change and cooperativity are not invoked at all. 相似文献

The question of whether or not parasite phylogeny provides information about host relationships (‘comparative parasitology’) reached a peak in 1957 in a vigorous debate between Gunther Timmermann and Ernst Mayr. Timmermann argued that parasites were associated with their hosts by descent and that this produced congruent host and parasite phylogenies. In contrast, Mayr argued that parasites were often associated by colonization and that this led to incongruence between host and parasite phylogenies. To test these differing views. Adrian Paterson, Russell Gray and Graham Wallis derived a procellaniform phylogeny. This tree is here compared with Timmermann's tree based on the relationships of feather lice. Timmermann's tree is more similar to the seabird phylogeny than would be expected by chance. Thus, support is found for the ‘comparative parasitology’ approach. 相似文献

Caribbean diaspora intellectuals have contributed significantly to African-American political struggles over the years, despite arguments by some African-American intellectuals about what they discern as West Indian negativism, extremism, and divisiveness in American political life. This essay examines the legacy of a representative sample of diasporic Caribbean intellectuals since the time of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and culminating in the 1970s, notably, Garvey, members of the African Blood Brotherhood [ABB], C.L.R. James, and Walter Rodney, to demonstrate the phenomenal ideological vision, organizational capability, and political activism they have brought into fostering solidarity with African Americans in the struggle for fundamental change. The focus here is on their respective contributions to the debate on the relationship between class and race in America and the black diaspora generally, which has helped to shape the form, and orient the direction of African-American and Caribbean diasporic struggles for the better part of the twentieth century. 相似文献
