A collection of rotifers contained in samples from the Blue, White and joint Niles in the Sudan, the Red Sea Hills, and Jebel Marra mountains is studied, and the previous literature on the rotifera of Sudan is reviewed. A total of 145 rotifer taxa are now known from this country. Ecological and distributional notes on selected species are added. Besides cosmopolitan, pantropical, and tropical species, a small but significant fraction of the fauna is of northern origin, possibly reflecting climatic conditions of the late-Pleistocene.  相似文献

Background

Despite historical evidence of blinding trachoma, there have been no widespread contemporary surveys of trachoma prevalence in the northern states of Sudan. We aimed to conduct district-level surveys in this vast region in order to map the extent of the problem and estimate the need for trachoma control interventions to eliminate blinding trachoma.

Methods and Findings

Separate, population based cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 88 localities (districts) in 12 northern states of Sudan between 2006 and 2010. Two-stage cluster random sampling with probability proportional to size was used to select the sample. Trachoma grading was done using the WHO simplified grading system. Key prevalence indicators were trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) in children aged 1–9 years and trachomatous trichiasis (TT) in adults aged 15 years and above. The sample comprised 1,260 clusters from which 25,624 households were surveyed. A total of 106,697 participants (81.6% response rate) were examined for trachoma signs. TF prevalence was above 10% in three districts and between 5% and 9% in 11 districts. TT prevalence among adults was above 1% in 20 districts (which included the three districts with TF prevalence >10%). The overall number of people with TT in the population was estimated to be 31,072 (lower and upper bounds = 26,125–36,955).

Conclusion

Trachoma mapping is complete in the northern states of Sudan except for the Darfur States. The survey findings will facilitate programme planning and inform deployment of resources for elimination of trachoma from the northern states of Sudan by 2015, in accordance with the Sudan Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) objectives.  相似文献

Bergmann's rule and the mammal fauna of northern North America   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
The observation that on the whole…  larger species live farther north and the smaller ones farther south was first published by Carl Bergmann in 1847. However, why animal body mass might show such spatial variation, and indeed whether it is a general feature of animal assemblages, is currently unclear. We discuss reasons for this uncertainty, and use our conclusions to direct an analysis of Bergmann's rule in the mammals in northern North America, in the communities of species occupying areas that were covered by ice at the last glacial maximum. First, we test for the existence of Bergmann's rule in this assemblage, and investigate whether small- and large-bodied species show different spatial patterns of body size variation. We then attempt to explain the spatial variation in terms of environmental variation, and evaluate the adequacy of our analyses to account for the spatial pattern using the residuals arising from our environmental models. Finally, we use the results of these models to test predictions of different hypotheses proposed to account for Bergmann's rule. Bergmann's rule is strongly supported. Both small- and large-bodied species exhibit the rule. Our environmental models account for most of the spatial variation in mean, minimum and maximum body mass in this assemblage. Our results falsify predictions of hypotheses relating to migration ability and random colonisation and diversification, but support predictions of hypotheses relating to both heat conservation and starvation resistance.  相似文献

The water hyacinth now forms an almost ubiquitous fringe to open-water habitats in the permanent wetland of the Sudd. In a typical river-lake the fringe varied between 9 and 16 m in breadth with highest plant biomasses in the centre. Largest quantities of macroinvertebrates in hyacinth root-mats were obtained in drop-trap samples within 6 m of the open water. They were dominated by coleopterans, odonatans, gastropods andCaridina nilotica. Outer edges of the fringe offer easy access, good dissolved oxygen concentrations, and a variety of potential food resources for aquatic invertebrates. By contrast the less hospitable landward zone contained a reduced fauna in which coleopterans, hydracarines and gastropods were prominent. A marked reduction in the numbers of invertebrates in lift-net samples of detached hyacinth rafts was attributed to browsing by fish. Hyacinth root-mats appear to have replaced the niches formerly provided by those of the Nile cabbage for aquatic invertebrates in the Sudd.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were carried out to measure direct adsorption of urea in some Sudan soils and to compare two methods for controlling urea hydrolysis. All the soils examined showed some capacity to adsorb urea. Urea adsorption was related to both the exchange capacity and clay content; the exchange capacity giving higher correlation than the clay content. Both autoclaving and mercuric chloride treatments controlled hydrolysis almost completely. Autoclaving was preferred as the method of controlling hydrolysis in this work.  相似文献

The shelly fauna of the lowest part of the Sælabonn Formation in the Hadeland district of the Oslo Region provides a rare insight into the shallow-water biota of the earliest Silurian and hence the start of biotic recovery after the end Ordovician extinction event. It is dominated by the brachiopods Dalmanella cf. pectinoides Bergström, Coolinia cf. columbana (Reed), Leptaena cf. haverfordensis Bancroft and Zygospiraella scotica (Salter) together with the trilobite Acernaspis elliptifrons (Esmark). The first three species in this unique association belong to eurytopic Ordovician survivor genera which were also present in the underlying unit in Hadeland and continued to thrive during the Silurian. Significantly, Zygospiraella and Acernaspis have no unequivocal Ordovician record but diversified rapidly and became common during the early Silurian (Rhuddanian) in many parts of the world. Moreover, Acernaspis and Zygospiraella were highly eurytopic, pioneer taxa that were among the first elements of the Rhuddanian shelly fauna to appear in many parts of the world especially around the margins of the remnant Iapetus Ocean, following the drowning of areas previously emergent during the late Ordovician sea-level lowstand. The Hadeland fauna provides evidence of a previously undocumented route (among several) by which life ultimately returned to the global diversity plateau established in the mid-Ordovician.  相似文献

Thistles of the genus Onopordum (Asteraceae: Cardueae) have become serious weed problems in parts of Australia and North America following introduction from their native Eurasian ranges, and are the target of a biological control programme in Australia. This paper analyses the results of three separate surveys of insects feeding and breeding on thistles of the genus Onopordum in the Mediterranean region. Of the 129 species found feeding, 74 species also bred on these thistles. Endophages comprised 54% of the breeding insects, with species that fed in the capitula and within the rosette crown/root area predominating. The Coleoptera and Hemiptera were the dominant endophage and ectophage taxa, respectively. Differences in the Onopordum fauna were noted between host species and between geographic regions, but this was largely due to the generalist component of the fauna. Onopordum specialists showed little variability across regions or between different species within the host genus. On comparing the fauna of Onopordum with that of other thistle genera, it was suggested that plant-herbivore interactions between Onopordum and its fauna are less highly evolved, in that there is less host specialization and a lesser degree of niche partitioning. This appears to be related to the low rate of speciation and habitat specialization within the host genus itself. The potential of certain genus-specific insects as biological control agents for Onopordum spp. is discussed. It is argued that the absence of a high degree of niche specialization could favour successful biological control, as the agent would be capable of inflicting damage over a wider range of resource gradients.  相似文献

Summary The carabid and spider faunas of a young polder, reclaimed from a tidal flat, was studied in two areas with pitfall traps. Data are presented on the soil and the vegetation.A total of 100000 specimens of 58 carabid and 55 spider species was caught. Those catches could be compared with data from a nearby area in an older polder representing a later successional stage. The data are described with d (an index of dominance), (the index of diversity), AV (a measure of the annual variability of population growth rates), and with dominance-diversity curves. After six years the carabid and spider faunas of the polder areas were less diverse than those outside the polder. The carabid fauna was very unstable, the spider fauna less so. This indicates that carabids reflect the changes in the habitat more clearly.Principal component analysis shows the development of the vegetation to have a major influence on the saline habitat; in carabids desalination of the soil also is important. The way in which the carabid and spider faunas developed is related to the low resource levels and high adversity and to the durational instability of the polder habitat.  相似文献

KORDOFANI, M. & INGROUILLE, M., 1991. Patterns of morphological variation in the Acacia species (Mimosaceae) of northern Sudan. A numerical taxonomic review has been carried out on the morphology of northern Sudanese Acacia species. Fifty-one characters were scored from 12 species sampled at 12 sites. There is evidence of large scale population variation. Within a single site species are distinct but a comparison of plants between different sites may obscure species differences. Each species has a peculiar local variant in each sampled site, even when sites are separated by only a few kilometres. The possible significance of this pattern of variation is discussed. In the course of cruises by FRV Scotia to study the ecology of O-group gadoids in the northern North Sea in October 1977 and November 1978, the fish fauna of the upper 1 m of the water column were sampled with an improvised gear. The most abundant species were O-group rocklings and clupeids and three spined sticklebacks. The frequency of occurrence of the last named and their relatively high abundance (up to 99 individuals in a 30 min haul) suggests that sticklebacks are more widely distributed throughout the open North Sea than is presently supposed. Young rocklings may amount to a considerable biomass in the near-surface waters.  相似文献

Abstract

Helix regularis, Laoma (Phrixgnathus) lucida var. elevata, L. elegans, and Lagochilus studeri, described from “New Zealand” or “Whangarei”, have proved to be referable to extralimital species, and should therefore be deleted from the New Zealand fauna. Helix regularis Pfeiffer, 1855 is shown to be a species of Coneuplecta Moellendorff, 1893 (Helicarionidae) closely related to or synonymous with Nanina microconus Mousson, 1865, for which a neotype is selected. Laoma (Phrixgnathus) lucida var. elevata Suter, 1896 is based on juveniles of Euconulus fulvus (Müller, 1774); Laoma elegans Suter, 1896 is Strobilops labyrinthica (Say, 1817); and Lagochilus studeri Suter, 1896 is Amnicola limosa (Say, 1817). Abstract  Termite species richness, frequency of occurrence and functional diversity at Holmes Jungle Nature Reserve, a monsoon rainforest patch in northern Australia, was investigated at the end of the wet season in 2003. A sampling protocol that employed direct search, soil pits and baiting techniques was used to sample litter, wood, mound, soil and arboreal nest microhabitats for termites. Five species from five genera and three families (Mastotermitidae, Rhinotermitidae and Termitidae) were recorded. This included the first record of Ephelotermes taylori (Hill) from monsoon forest in Australia. The family Termitidae was dominant and represented 70% of termite occurrences. Termites were most frequently encountered in carton runways on tree trunks, followed by lying dead wood and baits. Four nesting habits were represented: arboreal, epigeal, hypogeal and within wood. The arboreal nest-builder Nasutitermes graveolus (Hill) accounted for 61% of termite encounters. Epigeal mound-building species were rare. Wood-feeders were the only trophic group represented. Relatively high activity of Mastotermes darwiniensis Froggatt was recorded at baits within 2.5 months. The low species richness recorded at Holmes Jungle is consistent with the low diversity reported for Australian rainforests generally, but remains relatively depauperate compared with other monsoon forest and savanna habitats of the Northern Territory.  相似文献

A new Pliocene (3.4 Ma) mollusk fauna from Mejillones Peninsula, northern Chile is described and compared with the Pliocene La Cueva fauna of little constrained age from central Chile and some species from the Huenteguapi Sandstone overlying the Ranquil Formation on Arauco Peninsula, south central Chile. Preliminary correlation is based on faunal similarities. A total of 45 taxa were identified, of which Cyclocardia kieli sp. nov. is new to science. New combinations are Macron escalonia (Vermeij and DeVries, 1997), Austrofusus steinmanni (Möricke, 1896) and Leukoma antiqua (King, 1832). For several species, the oldest occurrences and range extensions are reported. Co-occurrence of warm water taxa, previously assigned to MIS 11, and typical Pliocene taxa on Mejillones cannot be confirmed. Pliocene and Pleistocene mollusk faunas from Mejillones are listed for comparison.  相似文献
