Despite the importance of within-patch search for predicting optimal patch-leaving strategy, little experimental effort has been devoted to the study of this foraging behaviour. In addition, predators' strategic responses to variability in features like the within-patch distribution of prey can have important consequences for their dietary decisions. We therefore analyse the search paths of European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, foraging individually in artificial patches that vary in the spatial distribution of buried prey in an outdoor aviary. The results demonstrate that the birds are searching differently depending on the order in which the experimental patch-types are experienced. We speculate that where the spatial predictability of prey is initially high the birds adopt a fixed search rule that results in area-concentrated search once a prey item is found, and performs well for both distributions encountered. However, where the predictability is initially low a more flexible strategy is adopted that results in increased area-concentrated search with experience of a patch type, independent of the actual within-patch distribution of prey. These findings suggest that starlings can use distinct strategies for different prey types, but they are classifying these types on subjective criteria that are difficult to predict from a priori reasoning.  相似文献

The Ratites (ostriches, emus, etc.) are thought to be neotenous descendants of flying birds, rather than primitive birds, even though they became a separate group early in the evolution of birds. This is because of the juvenile, rather than primitive, condition of the palate, skull-sutures and feathers. We report here that European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) thyroidectomized soon after hatching also show neoteny, retaining many juvenile features (general morphology, palate, skull-sutures, feathers, behaviour), while at the same time becoming sexually mature. The juvenile characters were similar to those found in Ratites, suggesting that hypothyroidism may have been a factor in the evolution of the Ratites.  相似文献

The occurrence of keratinophilic fungi on the feathers of 110 starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) was investigated in order to assess the part that these birds may have in spreading of fungi of medical interest. Thirty eight birds (26%) yielded keratinophilic fungi, primarily Chrysosporium species, but also Scopulariopsis brevicaulis and Trichophyton terrestre. We reviewed the pathogenicity of the isolated fungi. Starlings may spread the propagules of keratinophilic fungi but it is difficult to determine if their increasing numbers in cities can be of significance in the epidemiology of today's rare mycoses. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Pending changes in European legislation ban the use of wild-caught animals in research. This change is partly justified on the assumption that captive-breeding (or hand-rearing) increases welfare of captive animals because these practices result in animals with reduced fear of humans. However, there are few actual data on the long-term behavioural effects of captive-breeding in non-domestic species, and these are urgently needed in order to understand the welfare and scientific consequences of adopting this practice. We compared the response of hand-reared and wild-caught starlings to the presence of a human in the laboratory. During human presence, all birds increased their general locomotor activity but the wild-caught birds moved away from the human and were less active than the hand-reared birds. After the human departed, the wild-caught birds were slower to decrease their activity back towards baseline levels, and showed a dramatic increase in time at the periphery of the cage compared with the hand-reared birds. We interpret these data as showing evidence of a greater fear response in wild-caught birds with initial withdrawal followed by a subsequent rebound of prolonged attempts to escape the cage. We found no effects of environmental enrichment. However, birds in cages on low shelves were less active than birds on upper shelves, and showed a greater increase in the time spent at the periphery of their cages after the human departed, perhaps indicating that the lower cages were more stressful. In demonstrating reduced fear of humans in hand-reared birds, our results support one of the proposed welfare benefits of this practice, but without further data on the possible welfare costs of hand-rearing, it is not yet possible to reach a general conclusion about its net welfare impact. However, our results confirm a clear scientific impact of both hand-rearing and cage position at the behavioural level.  相似文献

Castration of juvenile and photorefractory adult starlings caused no immediate increase in circulating concentrations of LH. In castrated juveniles and adults exposed to natural changes in daylength, plasma LH increased between mid-October and mid-November, although the increase was more rapid in adults. In castrated photorefractory adults, plasma LH increased 3-5 weeks after transfer to artificial short days (8L:16D). In castrated juvenile starlings plasma LH increased 4-6 weeks after transfer to 8L:16D, irrespective of the age of the birds. Birds as young as 17 weeks had high LH concentrations. These results suggest that the reproductive system of juvenile starlings is in the same state as that of photorefractory adults, and therefore the activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis for the first time in juveniles is analagous to the termination of photorefractoriness in adults.  相似文献

The effects of natural moult on avian flight performance have received relatively little attention, yet moult is an important part of the annual cycle. Quantification of flight costs will help to explain the diversity of moult patterns observed in avian taxa. Take‐off from the ground requires a high power output from the flight muscles compared to other modes of flight, and is an important feature of foraging and predation escape. The present study was designed to quantify the effect of natural moult and new plumage on the take‐off strategy, kinematics, and flight performance of European starlings Sturnus vulgaris. A high‐speed (185 Hz) cine camera was used to film seven European starlings on three occasions: session 1, two weeks prior to the onset of moult; session 2, during mid‐moult; and session 3, two weeks after full plumage had re‐grown. From subsequent film analysis, we assessed take‐off speed and angle, the energy gained per wingbeat, and wingtip kinematics. Take‐off strategy (measured by angle and speed) altered through the course of the three experimental sessions, i.e. ascent angle decreased and take‐off speed increased. Energy gained per wingbeat did not vary, suggesting there was no significant decrease in flight performance due to moult, but there was a significant improvement in take‐off performance due to renewal of flight plumage. Wingbeat amplitude increased in association with moult and after flight plumage had been completely renewed. The European starlings incurred relatively minor flight costs due to moult, when comparing before‐moult with during‐moult take‐off performance. The apparent absence of additional flight costs associated with moult may reflect a decreased mechanical performance of year‐old feathers (which are replaced during the moult) and may also help to explain the relatively long duration of the moult in this species. This study also provides evidence of the benefits of plumage renewal, as take‐off performance is improved after moult has been completed.  相似文献

Plasma levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin were measured by radioimmunoassay in plasma samples collected from free-living starlings, Sturnus vulgaris , trapped in nest-boxes. By leaving some nest-boxes undisturbed, and repeatedly destroying nests in others, birds from a single-brooded population were trapped whilst nest-building, incubating or feeding nestlings, at different times throughout the normal breeding season. In both males and females trapped whilst nest-building, plasma LH and prolactin levels increased progressively from mid March until late May. In females sampled during incubation, LH and FSH levels were high throughout May but decreased in early June. Prolactin levels were highest in late May. In both males and females trapped during mid May, LH levels were highest in these birds which were nest-building at this time and lowest in those feeding nestlings, FSH did not change significantly, and prolactin was low in those birds which were nest-building and high in those incubating or feeding nestlings. In female starlings from a double-brooded population, levels of LH and FSH were much lower whilst feeding the second brood than when feeding the first brood, whereas prolactin levels were similar. The results suggest that incubation and feeding behaviour inhibit the increase in LH secretion caused by increasing daylength, but stimulate prolactin secretion in excess of that caused by increasing daylength.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin and testosterone, and pituitary content of LH and prolactin, were measured in free-living starlings, Sturnus vulgaris , from hatching until 12 weeks of age.
Plasma LH concentrations were elevated in both sexes until four days after hatching, then they decreased. Throughout the period, plasma LH levels were low compared to those in breeding adults but were comparable to levels in post-breeding photorefractory adults. Pituitary LH content increased until 12 days after hatching, but this increase was due to physical growth during this period. Plasma prolactin concentration and pituitary prolactin content increased dramatically during the nestling period. The increase in pituitary prolactin content was in excess of that accounted for by increasing size. Plasma prolactin remained high during the immediate post-fledging period, but had started to decrease by 12 weeks after hatching. Plasma testosterone concentrations were lower than those in breeding adults, but generally higher than in post-breeding photorefractory adults. The gonads of both sexes remained regressed.
These results suggest that the reproductive system of nestling and juvenile starlings is in a similar state to that of post-breeding photorefractory adult starlings. The comparatively high levels of testosterone may reflect involvement in sexual differentiation.  相似文献

Summary Pinealectomized and sham-operated European starlings were maintained for 16 months under a constant 12-h photoperiod and constant temperature conditions. In all birds, testicular width was measured at about monthly intervals and the onset and end of molt was determined. Shortly after the beginning of the experiment, the sham-operated birds went through a cycle of testicular growth and regression which was followed by a complete molt; subsequently most individuals initiated a second testicular cycle. Most of the pinealectomized birds, in contrast, failed to go through a second testicular cycle. Moreover, during the first cycle their testes regressed earlier than in the sham-operated birds and the subsequent molt was relatively advanced. In these respects the pinealectomized birds behaved like intact starlings under a 13-h photoperiod. Since pinealectomy probably changes the phase-relationship between circadian rhythms and the entraining light-dark cycle it is proposed that pinealectomy in the present experiment might have altered the phase-relationship between a circadian rhythm of photosensitivity and the light-dark cycle in such a way that the birds interpreted the 12-h photoperiod as a 13-h photoperiod. This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft SPP Mechanismen biologischer Uhren.  相似文献

Summary In starlings, the breeding season is terminated by a state of photorefractoriness. Birds remain completely reproductively inactive as long as long days are maintained, and only exposure to short days restores photosensitivity. Two experiments investigated the role of different doses of thyroxine in the development of photosensitivity in castrated starlings. First, photorefractory castrated male starlings were moved from long (18L:6D) to short (8L:16D) days, and received in the drinking water either 1 or 10 mg · 1-1 thyroxine for the first 7 weeks of a 14-week observation period. Control birds regained photosensitivity after 5 weeks of short days, as signaled by a spontaneous increase in plasma LH, whereas the return to photosensitivity was delayed until weeks 7 and 9 in the 1- and 10-mg · 1-1 thyroxine-treated birds, respectively. In the second experiment, the effect of different doses of thyroxine was explored at the level of the hypothalamic Gn-RH neurosecretory neurones. The acquisition of photosensitivity in control birds transferred from long to short days was characterized by a marked increase in hypothalamic Gn-RH content (while long-day controls maintained low Gn-RH content). Doses of 10 and 20 mg · 1-1 of thyroxine completely prevented the return to photosensitivity, as seen through changes in either plasma LH concentrations or hypothalamic Gn-RH content, while a dose of 1 mg · 1-1 allowed a partial recovery of photosensitivity, as hypothalamic Gn-RH content increased to an intermediate level and the spontaneous rise in plasma LH occurred slowly but steadily.Abbreviations Gn-RH gonadotrophin-releasing hormone - LH luteinizing hormone - LHRH-I luteinizing hormone releasing hormone  相似文献

There is considerable evidence that reproductive success improves with age in birds. It is often suggested that improved performance of older birds is because they are more experienced. Less consideration has been given to the possibility that improvements may be a consequence of age-related changes in reproductive physiology. One factor that consistently changes with age is laying date – first year birds lay later than older birds. In European starlings Sturnus vulgaris , older males begin reproductive activity earlier than first year males and dominate available nest sites. I monitored changes in testicular volume in captive starlings exposed to natural changes in day length and temperature, from their first autumn through the next two annual cycles. Testicular maturation was advanced by 3–4 weeks in birds during their second year compared to the first, and testicular regression occurred about 2 weeks later. The period of full sexual maturation was 50% longer during the second year. The timing of the post-nuptial moult was the same. A possible physiological mechanism to explain this is discussed. The results show that earlier reproductive activity in older birds can be explained, at least in part, by intrinsic physiological mechanisms. This does not preclude additional effects of experience of an individual in the improvement in reproductive performance between first and second year birds.  相似文献

Serums of 563 fledgling starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) trapped during a 14 month period near Lodi, California were examined for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii using the microtiter indirect hemagglutination method. Titers ranging from 1:64 to 1:512 were found in 4.8% of the birds. Starlings collected during May through October had a higher prevalence of antibody than those collected during November through April. Rats inoculated with individual heart and brain suspensions from 10 seropositive starlings remained seronegative for T. gondii antibodies when tested at 22 and 82 days post-inoculation. Peritoneal smears made from these rats at post-inoculation day 82 were negative for T. gondii.  相似文献

As ultraviolet wavelengths are used in normal avian colour perception, the maintenance of captive birds under artificial lighting (which is normally UV-deficient) may have welfare implications. European starling Sturnus vulgaris juveniles kept in UV-deficient light environments had significantly higher basal plasma corticosterone concentrations than those kept under full spectrum lighting, in the second of two experimental blocks. UV-deficient conditions also led to significant changes in behaviour indicative of escape (less perching and more hanging on the cage and pecking at it). However, the birds from the first block, where the interval between transfer to the experimental set-up from the wild was short (2 days), showed significantly higher basal and maximum plasma corticosterone concentrations than those in the second block and no additional effect of light environment on either corticosterone or behaviour. We hypothesise that this difference between blocks was due to the overriding initial stress of being in captivity swamping any treatment effects. Capture stress had declined in the second set of birds, which entered the experiment after 7–14 days in captivity. Stress effects of UV-deficient lighting appear small relative to the overall impact of captivity, but may nevertheless become apparent after the initial effects of capture subside.  相似文献

The revision of EU legislation will ban the use of wild-caught animals in scientific procedures. This change is partially predicated on the assumption that captive-rearing produces animals with reduced fearfulness. Previously, we have shown that hand-reared starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) indeed exhibit reduced fear of humans compared to wild-caught conspecifics. Here, we asked whether this reduction in fear in hand-reared birds is limited to fear of humans or extends more generally to fear of novel environments and novel objects. Comparing 6-8 month old birds hand-reared in the lab with age-matched birds caught from the wild as fledged juveniles a minimum of 1 month previously, we examined the birds' initial reactions in a novel environment (a small cage) and found that wild-caught starlings were faster to initiate movement compared to the hand-reared birds. We interpret this difference as evidence for greater escape motivation in the wild-caught birds. In contrast, we found no differences between hand-reared and wild-caught birds when tested in novel object tests assumed to measure neophobia and exploratory behaviour. Moreover, we found no correlations between individual bird's responses in the different tests, supporting the idea that these measure different traits (e.g. fear and exploration). In summary, our data show that developmental origin affects one measure of response to novelty in young starlings, indicative of a difference in either fear or coping style in a stressful situation. Our data contribute to a growing literature demonstrating effects of early-life experience on later behaviour in a range of species. However, since we did not find consistent evidence for reduced fearfulness in hand-reared birds, we remain agnostic about the welfare benefits of hand-rearing as a method for sourcing wild birds for behavioural and physiological research.  相似文献

The poisoning of wild animals by lead (Pb) ammunition fired by hunters has been known for many decades, especially in the case of waterbirds. More recently, it has been demonstrated that raptors are also exposed to the risk of plumbism when feeding on unretrieved quarry that was wounded or killed by hunters. Further studies reveal that even humans can be subject to a significant Pb dose while consuming game animals killed by traditional ammunition. Given the relevance of this issue, several pieces of research have been carried out to assess frequency, dimension, and the number of Pb fragments embedded in the carcasses of ungulates, partridges, ducks, and other birds to evaluate the risk related to the consumption of game meat. In spite of their great importance as quarry species across southern Europe, until now, no data have been available on small passerines. To assess the quantity and type of Pb embedded in songbirds, we x-rayed 196 starlings shot in Italy and found Pb pellets and/or visible fragments in 118 carcasses (60.2 %). We counted 128 shotgun pellets in 85 carcasses. In 28 birds, we detected both whole pellets and lead fragments; in 33, we found only small fragments. By excising and weighing a sample of 20 shotgun pellets (diameter 1.35–1.99 mm), we calculated a Pb load of 3.75 g in the whole sample of 196 starlings, corresponding to an average of 27.32 mg/100 g of body weight. This is a conservative estimation, because fragments were not considered. Compared to game birds of a larger size, the starlings in our study had a lower amount of embedded Pb, but the shot pellets and fragments embedded in their tissues were abundant and tiny. Given the results of previous studies, the quantity and level of fragmentation suggest that the risk of Pb poisoning cannot be ruled out for humans and birds of prey consuming the meat from songbirds killed with traditional ammunition.  相似文献

In male starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) courtship song plays a critical role in mate attraction. During the breeding season courtship song occurs prior to copulation and appears to reflect male sexual arousal. Outside the breeding season starlings sing, but song appears unrelated to reproduction. The aromatization of testosterone (T), likely within the medial preoptic nucleus (POM), is critical for the expression of male sexual arousal. The present study was performed to determine whether seasonal changes in the POM might relate to seasonal changes in courtship singing behavior in male starlings. T concentrations, the volume of the POM, and aromatase within the POM were examined both during and outside of the breeding season in male starlings. Song was also recorded at these times both with and without a female present. The POM was largest and contained dense aromatase immunostaining only during the spring breeding season, when T concentrations were highest and males responded to a female with an increase in courtship song. Outside the breeding season the volume of the POM was small, T concentrations were low, and males displayed no changes in song expression in response to female conspecifics. Song bout length was positively related to POM volume, and males sang longer songs in spring. Only males with nestboxes in spring responded to a female, and the POM tended to be larger in these males, suggesting that nestbox possession might influence neuroplasticity within the POM. Overall, the findings suggest that T-dependent plasticity and aromatase activity within the POM might regulate courtship singing in a wild songbird.  相似文献
