We tested artificial diets for rearing the coconut hispine beetle, Brontispa longissima, a serious invasive pest of coconut (Cocos nucifera) in Southeast Asia. We examined three artificial diets that were identical except for their agar content. The survival rate from hatching to adult emergence was 26.0% when beetles were reared on a ‘soft diet’ (20 g/l agar), 16.0% on a ‘hard diet’ (40 g/l agar), and 41.0% on a ‘mixed diet’, in which the hard diet was used for the first instar and the soft diet for later instars. Females raised as larvae on the mixed diet and then as adults on the soft diet laid few eggs, which did not hatch. However, females reared on the mixed diet as larvae and then on fresh leaves as adults consistently laid eggs that hatched. We then examined the suitability of B. longissima larvae reared on the mixed diet as hosts for the larval parasitoid Asecodes hispinarum, a specialist parasitoid of this beetle. Of the oviposited hosts, 75.0% became mummified and 41.7% produced adult wasps. These results indicate that the mixed diet may be useful for rearing B. longissima larvae as hosts for the rearing of A. hispinarum.

The coconut hispine beetle, Brontispa longissima (Gestro), is a serious invasive pest that infests young unopened fronds of coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) in Southeast Asia. We previously developed the first artificial diet for rearing B. longissima larvae, which contained a leaf powder of young coconut fronds. Because the fronds are required for healthy growth of coconut palms, it is necessary to reduce their use for rearing the beetles. In this study, we tested two new artificial diets for the beetle larvae, which contained the leaf powders of mature coconut leaves or orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.). Brontispa longissima successfully developed from hatching to adulthood on both the mature coconut leaf diet and orchard grass diet. The beetles reared on the mature coconut leaf diet and orchard grass diet developed faster than those reared on the young coconut leaf diet. Fecundity and egg hatchability of beetles did not differ among the three diet treatments. We then examined the suitability of beetle larvae or pupae reared on each diet as hosts for two specialist endoparasitoids, Asecodes hispinarum Boucek and Tetrastichus brontispae Ferriere. The survival rate from oviposition to adult emergence for A. hispinarum was 43.8% in hosts reared on a young coconut leaf diet, 77.1% on a mature coconut leaf diet, and 85.7% on an orchard grass diet. For T. brontispae, the survival rate was 70.0% in hosts reared on the young coconut leaf diet, 38.1% on the mature coconut leaf diet, and 66.7% on the orchard grass diet. Our results indicate these artificial diets can be useful for rearing B. longissima and its two parasitoids, helping to reduce the costs of mass rearing these insects.

The oak longicorn beetle, Moechotypa diphysis (Pascoe), is a pest of bed logs for shiitake mushroom and an invasive species on Japan’s main islands. I attempted to rear larvae of M. diphysis on two artificial diets consisting of a commercially available diet for silkworm plus dried yeast and sawdust of the sawtooth oak, Quercus acutissima Carruthers, or of Japanese beech, Fagus crenata Blume. Newly hatched larvae were inoculated on these artificial diets and reared at 25°C in the dark. More than 60% of larvae emerged as adults when fed with these diets. The weights of emerged adults fed on the artificial diets were heavier than those emerging from logs of Q. acutissima, their natural diet, in a field cage. These results demonstrate that the two artificial diets are useful for rearing M. diphysis larvae and can assist further studies on the development of this invasive species.

The Japanese nine‐spotted moth Amata fortunei has not been successfully reared using artificial diets. We investigated three diets for rearing A. fortunei from egg to adult: (i) leaves of common dandelion Taraxacum officinale (DL); (ii) an artificial diet used to rear the silkworm Bombyx mori (Insecta LFS®; AD); and (iii) a mixture of AD and an artificial mouse diet (MF). The survival rate from the first instar to adult emergence on AD + MF (80.77%) was significantly higher than that on AD or DL (30.77 and 20.0%, respectively). No significant differences in developmental periods at each stage were found among the diets. Moreover, body size indices of larvae reared on AD + MF were the same as or greater than those of larvae reared on the other diets and of wild individuals. Larval nutritional indices showed that food requirements changed after the third instar; this agrees with our observations of cannibalism and survival rate. Our results suggest that AD + MF is a suitable artificial diet for A. fortunei.

Larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, were reared individually on meridic diets from hatching to adult emergence at 32±0·25°C and 75±5% r.h. On diets devoid of l-isoleucine or of l-valine, these larvae developed little, if at all, and died before reaching the larval-pupal ecdysial stage. Graded concentrations of l-isoleucine up to 6·0 mg/g or of l-valine up to 5·0 mg/g increased the rate of development and survival of this insect. Concentrations of either amino acid beyond these levels was neither beneficial nor harmful to O. surinamensis, in terms of rate of development or survival.

Summary Survival and body composition of starving gypsy moth larvae initially reared on aspen foliage or artificial diet differeing in nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate concentration were examined under laboratory conditions. Diet nitrogen concentration strongly affected starvation resistance and body composition, but diet carbohydrate content had no effects on these. Within any single diet treatment, greater body mass afforded greater resistance to starvation. However, starving larvae reared on 1.5% N diet survived nearly three days longer than larvae reared on 3.5% N diet. Larvae reared on artificial diet survived longer than larvae reared on aspen. Differences in survival of larvae reared on artificial diet with low and high nitrogen concentrations could not be attributed to variation in respiration rates, but were associated with differences in body composition. Although percentage lipid in larvae was unaffected by diet nitrogen concentration, larvae reared on 1.5% N diet had a higher percentage carbohydrate and lower percentage protein in their bodies prior to starvation than larvae reared on 3.5% N diet. Hence, larger energy reserves of larvae reared on low nitrogen diet may have contributed to their greater starvation resistance. Whereas survival under food stress was lower for larvae reared on high N diets, growth rates and pupal weights were higher, suggesting a tradeoff between rapid growth and survival. Larger body size does not necessarily reflect larger energy reserves, and, in fact, larger body size accured via greater protein accumulation may be at the expense of energy reserves. Large, fast-growing larvae may be more fit when food is abundant, but this advantage may be severely diminished under food stress. The potential ecological and evolutionary implications of a growth/survival tradeoff are discussed.

Stag beetle larvae generally feed on decaying wood; however, it was unknown whether they can use wood-rotting fungi alone as food. Here, to clarify this, newly hatched larvae of Dorcus rectus (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) were reared for 14 days on artificial diets containing a fixed amount of freeze-dried mycelia of the following fungi: Bjerkandera adusta, Trametes versicolor, Pleurotus ostreatus, and Fomitopsis pinicola. The mean incremental gain in larval body mass was greatest on diets containing B. adusta, followed by T. versicolor, P. ostreatus, and F. pinicola. The growth rate of body mass correlated positively with mycelial nitrogen content of the different fungi. It also correlated positively with the mycelial content of B. adusta in the diet. Addition of antibiotics to diets with mycelia nearly halved larval growth, indicating that larvae were able to use fungal mycelia as food without the assistance of associated microbes although the microbes positively affected larval growth. Four newly hatched larvae reared on artificial diets containing B. adusta mycelia developed to the second instar in 21-34 days; and one developed to the third (=final) instar. This study provides evidence that fungi may constitute the bulk of the diet of D. rectus larvae.

Growth, survival, fecundity, and nutrition of Tirathaba rufivena (Walker) fed on two artificial and one natural diet were studied at 29±1°C and 75±5% relative humidity. Larvae reared on the two artificial diets showed faster growth and development, higher pupal survival and weight, and higher adult fecundity than those reared on a natural diet of young coconuts, Cocos nucifera L. The relative growth rate, efficiency of ingested food conversion, and efficiency of digested food conversion in larvae fed on artificial diets were significantly higher than those of larvae fed on young coconuts. The relative consumption rate of larvae fed on artificial diets was significantly lower than that of larvae fed on young coconuts. T. rufivena showed no significant degradation in ability to propagate after being reared on the artificial diet for five successive generations. These results indicated that two artificial diets are suitable for mass rearing of T. rufivena.

Development, survivorship, pupal weight, oviposition, and life table parameters of the oriental tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta Guenée, were evaluated in the laboratory on an artificial diet, pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.), and tobacco (Nicotiana tobacum L.). We found that the average developmental time of immature stages was longest on tobacco (36.2 d), intermediate on pepper (34.4 d), and shortest on artificial diet (33.5 d). Immature survival from egg to pupa varied from 31% on tobacco, 43% on pepper, and 74% on artificial diet. Pupal weight ranged from 197.4 mg/pupa on tobacco, 233.1 mg/pupa on pepper and 253.4 mg/pupa on artificial diet. The average numbers of eggs laid by adults reared as larvae on the artificial diet, pepper, or tobacco were 614, 421 and 334 eggs/female, respectively. Numbers of remaining eggs in ovaries of the adult females reared as larvae on the artificial diet, pepper, or tobacco were 16, 26, and 42 eggs/female, respectively. The longevity of adult females developed from larvae reared on the three diets was not significantly different, whereas the longevity of male adults from the larvae reared on artificial diet was longer (16.8 d) than that for males reared on tobacco (13.8 d) and pepper (13.3 d). The intrinsic, finite, gross, and net rates of increase were highest for females reared as larvae on artificial diet, lowest for females emerging from larvae reared on tobacco, and intermediate for females emerging from larvae reared on pepper. Generation times and doubling time of H. assulta were shortest for larvae fed artificial diet, intermediate from larvae reared on pepper, and longest from larvae reared on tobacco. We concluded that the artificial diet was the most suitable larval diet of H. assulta followed by pepper, and tobacco.

Larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, were reared individually on meridic diets from hatching to adult emergence at 32±0·25°C and 75% r.h. These larvae developed little, if at all, and failed to carry out larval-pupal ecdysis on a diet devoid of leucine. Survival increased as the concentration of dietary l-leucine increased from 0·0 to 3·0 mg/g and rate of development, as l-leucine increased to 8·0 mg/g. With concentrations of dietary l-leucine greater than 8·0 mg/g, the rate of development of Oryzaephilus surinamensis decreased.

Microflora species and volatiles emitted from artificial diets were examined from the larvae of three homozygous alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) strains of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera (Dacus) oleae (Gmelin), reared under identical conditions. Differences in volatile composition were detected when Adh-I homozygous larvae developed in a diet lacking the preservative p-hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester (nipagin). Larval development of the Adh-I strain in the preservative-free diet was reduced by 50%, whereas pupal emergence was completely inhibited. The larval development and pupal emergence of Adh-F and Adh-S strains were not affected. Unique microorganisms with characteristic volatile profiles were isolated from the preservative-free diet of the Adh-I strain that were different from those, isolated from Adh-S, Adh-F, laboratory colony, and wild insect populations. Our results indicated that the variations in volatile composition of the artificial diets, and the inhibition of larval development and pupal emergence in Adh-I strain were related to changes in the microflora that developed in the diets of the Adh-I strain.

Synopsis The developmental interval, body length, dry and wet weight were determined in carp larvae during the first 2 weeks of exogenous feeding. Six feeding groups were reared at 26°C; four groups received different artificial diets, whereas zooplankton-fed larvae and unfed larvae served as controls. It was found that larval developmental rate can be modified by the type of food. The diet affects the relationship between developmental step and weight. The effect of diet on the relationship between development and length becomes manifest at older steps (after longer feeding the same diet). A threshold point, after which satisfactory results of feeding artificial diets to carp larvae can be expected, depends not only on body size but also on the degree of development.

Behavioral and electrophysiological responses of larvae of the polyphagous moth species Helicoverpa armigera to two plant-derived allelochemicals were studied, both in larvae that had been reared on a diet devoid of these compounds and in larvae previously exposed to these compounds. In dual-choice cotton leaf disk and pepper fruit disk arena assays, caterpillars reared on a normal artificial diet were strongly deterred by strychnine and strophanthin-K. However, caterpillars reared on an artificial diet containing strychnine were insensitive to strychnine and strophanthin-K. Similarly, caterpillars reared on an artificial diet containing strophanthin-K were also desensitized to both deterrent chemicals. Electrophysiological tests revealed that the deterrent-sensitive neurons in taste sensilla on the maxillae of caterpillars reared on each deterrent-containing diet displayed reduced sensitivity to the two chemicals compared with the caterpillars reared on normal diets. We conclude that the experience-dependent behavioral plasticity was partly based on the reduced sensitivity of taste receptor neurons and that the desensitization of taste receptor neurons contributed to the cross-habituation to the two chemicals.

In this study, I tested an artificial diet, Insecta LFS, for rearing the 28-spotted ladybird beetle, Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata (Fabricius). H. vigintioctopunctata larvae could not be reared through all of the larval stages on the artificial diet. However, initially they could be reared on tomato leaves up to the second or third instar, and thereafter exclusively on the artificial diet. The larval and pupal periods were not significantly different from those reared only on tomato leaves. For females reared by the diet-switching method, the preoviposition period was significantly longer and the number of eggs laid significantly lower than for those on tomato leaves. However, these differences did not become a hindrance to laboratory rearing. This rearing method saves labor involving obtaining fresh plant leaves and produces a reliable supply of the insects.

Larvae of Acheta domesticus were reared on artificial diets both singly and in groups of six. The growth of group-reared larvae was significantly faster, and survival of singly reared larvae was greatly reduced. Survival of singly reared larvae was raised to that of grouped larvae when 1% wheat-germ oil was added to the diet. Wheat-germ oil also improved the growth of grouped larvae and of singly reared female larvae. The fatty acid composition of body lipid was similar, except for linolenic acid, whether the larvae were singly or group-reared, or whether wheat-germ oil was fed or not. These results are discussed from the point of view of the mechanism of the group effect.

Mulberry longicorn beetle, Apriona germari, was reared on an artificial diet to investigate its life cycle. Average egg period was 17.95 days. Most larvae pupated at the 8th (33.3%) or 9th (33.3%) instars, but others emerged from the 7th to the 11th instars. The total duration of larval stage from the 1st to the end of the 9th and the 11th instars were 176.2 and 251.5 days, respectively. For terminatiopn of diapause and acceleration of pupation, low temperature treatment at 5°C for 60 days was highly effective. Average pupal period for female and male was 19.3 and 18.4 days, respectively. Average longevity of adults was similar with 40.5 days for female and 44.3 days for male. Mating had occurred from about 10 days after the adult emergence, and then a female adult laid one or two eggs per day. Average number of eggs oviposited by a female was approximately 47.7. Total life span of A. germari, when reared on an artificial diet in the laboratory, ranged broadly from 197.5 days to 331.5 days mainly depending on the larval period.

Xylophagous insects derive nutrients from intractable substrates by producing or ingesting cellulolytic enzymes, or by maintaining associations with symbiotic microbes. Wood-boring cerambycid beetle larvae sometimes house maternally-transmitted endosymbiotic yeasts that are presumed to provide their hosts with nutritional benefits. These are thought to be absent from species in the large subfamily Lamiinae; nevertheless yeasts have been repeatedly isolated from the guts of neotropical lamiines. The objective of this study was to conduct transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of cerambycid larval midgut tissues to determine if gut yeasts were intracellular, or simply present in the gut lumen. Nine cerambycid larvae were harvested from two trees in the Brazil nut family (Lecythidaceae) in the rain forest of SE Peru; seven were identified using mtDNA sequence data and processed for TEM. Yeasts cultured from larval frass or exuvia, and identified with rDNA sequence data, were identical or similar to yeasts previously isolated from beetles. In TEM analyses yeast cells were found only in the gut lumens, sometimes associated with fragments of thick-walled xylem cells. Apparent bacteriocytes were found in either midgut or fat body tissue of three larval specimens, including two lamiines. This is the first report of a potential fat body symbiosis in a cerambycid beetle. Future studies of cerambycid symbiosis should distinguish the identities and potential roles of free-living organisms in the gut lumen from those of organisms harbored within gut epithelial or fat body tissue.
