The phylogenetic relationships among six members of the 'tyndarus' group in the Erebia genus of Satyrid butterflies, i.e. E. tyndarus, E. cassioides, E. nivalis, E. calcaria, E. hispania and E. ottomana were analysed using data from 19 presumptive enzyme loci, as well as 440 and 429 bp, respectively, from the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (16S) and subunit 1 from the NADH dehydrogenase (ND1) genes. The two types of molecular data (allozymes and mtDNA) yielded largely congruent tree topologies. The two basal, independent lineages formed by E. ottomana and E. hispania are contrasted by a group of Genétically closely related taxa, suggestive of a recent radiation associated with allopatric speciation, and competitive exclusion. The time of divergence for the radiation event is similar for both allozymes and mtDNA with an estimation of 440000 years ago. The lineages involved in this radiation do not comply with all the criteria necessary to assign to each of them full species rank, but they can no more be included in one single species unit. Such situations involving more than two alio- or parapatric lineages may explain why polytomies are so often met in phylogenetic reconstructions, after the lineages have reached full species rank. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 319–332.  相似文献

Historical relationships were inferred for the oriental lizards of the genus Takydromus Daudin 1802 (Lacertidae) on the basis of DNA sequences. Of the 17 species currently recognized for the genus, 13 species represented by 42 specimens from 29 localities were examined. Maximum-likelihood and maximum-parsimony analyses of data for 829 aligned sites from parts of the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA genes yielded relationships that, while showing no substantial discrepancy with each other, were strikingly different from a currently prevailing phylogenetic hypothesis from a parsimony analysis of morphological characters. Based on the results of these molecular analyses, supplemented by results of the morphological analysis that offered robust evidence for positions of two additional species ( T. khasiensis and T. sylvaticus ), the following interrelationships were hypothesized as the most preferred phylogeny: ( kuehnei ( sexlineatus khasiensis ))( tachydromoides (( smaragdinus ( sauteri ( dorsalis sylvaticus ))) ( amurensis ((( formosanus wolteri ) hsuehshanensis )( toyamai ( septentrionalis stejnegeri )))))). These interrelationships indicate: (1) invalidity of Platyplacopus Boulenger 1917 , which was recently resurrected as a subgenus of Takydromus on the basis of the morphological analysis; (2) homoplasy in states of some morphological characters, such as green dorsal coloration, that were considered as synapomorphs of certain nodes in the morphological analysis; and (3) involvement of the genus in a series of vicariances in both the continental and insular parts of eastern Eurasia. Due to the paucity of available samples, phylogenetic status of T. intermedius and T. haughtonianus remain to be examined in future studies.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 76 , 493–509.  相似文献

Recent molecular phylogenetic studies of the terrestrial snail genus Albinaria have caused a radical reassessment of its taxonomy. These studies, however, were limited to western species. This paper examines mitochondrial 12S sequences and nuclear ITS1 & 2 sequences of both eastern and western species, and demonstrates that Albinaria, in its most recent definition, is not monophyletic. Both molecular datasets place ' Albinaria ' hedenborgi from Lebanon in a well-supported clade with species of the genus Cristataria , distributed south-east of the vicariant range of Albinaria . The remaining species from Cyprus, Turkey and Greece constitute a well-supported monophyletic group. These two clades form geographical clusters, whereas Albinaria in the current definition (including ' A. '  hedenborgi ) has a disjunct distribution. ' A.' hedenborgi should therefore be classified with Cristataria , together with the morphologically similar and geographically close ' A. '  nadimi .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 143 , 531−542.  相似文献

The family Galatheidae is among the most diverse families of anomuran decapod crustaceans, and the South‐West Pacific is a biodiversity hot spot for these squat lobsters. Attempts to clarify the taxonomic and evolutionary relationships of the Galatheidae on the basis of morphological and molecular data have revealed the existence of several cryptic species, differentiated only by subtle morphological characters. Despite these efforts, however, relationships among genera are poorly understood, and the family is in need of a detailed systematic review. In this study, we assess material collected in different surveys conducted in the Solomon Islands, as well as comparative material from the Fiji Islands, by examining both the morphology of the specimens and two mitochondrial markers (cytochrome oxidase subunit I, COI, and 16S rRNA). These two sources of data revealed the existence of eight new species of squat lobster, four of which were ascribed to the genus Munida, two to the genus Paramunida, one to the genus Plesionida, and the last species was ascribed to the genus Agononida. These eight species are described along with phylogenetic relationships at the genus level. Our findings support the taxonomic status of the new species, yet the phylogenetic relationships are not yet fully resolved. Further molecular analysis of a larger data set of species, and more conserved genes, will help clarify the systematics of this group. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 156 , 465–493.  相似文献

The sepiids are characterized by their cuttlebone or sepion, an internal shell resulting from secondary mineralization of a chitinous 'gladius'. The various species are identified using a combination of shell criteria and 'soft-part' characters. Using mitochondrial genes, we established phylogenetic relationships of sepiids including the three accepted genera ( Sepia , Sepiella , Metasepia ) and a species complex of uncertain status ( Doratosepion ). We showed the Sepia genus to be paraphyletic and found no direct correlation between geographical distribution and systematics. We mapped, on the molecular tree, shell characteristics commonly used as reliable diagnostic criteria for taxonomy. Due to the plasticity of the shell, these characters did not appear phylogenetically informative. In an attempt to define systematic categories related to phylogenetic relationships, new clear synapomorphies need to be established for each genus, necessitating a revision of the genus Sepia .  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 89 , 139–150.  相似文献

Sequences from two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b and NADH1) were used to produce a molecular phylogeny for 12 named and two undescribed species of the genus Oligoryzomys. All analyses placed Oligoryzomys microtis as the most basal taxon, a finding consistent with previous studies that suggested the west‐central Amazon as a centre of origin for the tribe Oryzomyini to which Oligoryzomys belongs. Biogeographically, this suggests that Oligoryzomys had a South American origin, and later advanced northwards, entering Central America and Mexico more recently. Different analyses have provided consistent support for several additional clades that did not necessarily agree with the species groups hypothesized by previous studies. A molecular clock derived for these data suggests an origin for the genus of 6.67 Mya, with most speciation within the genus occurring between 3.7 and 1.5 Mya. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 551–566.  相似文献

Salmothymus obtusirostris (soft-muzzled trout) is endemic to the South Adriatic drainage. Owing to its unusual appearance, which resembles both trout and grayling, it has been initially classified as a separate genus. However, this classification is ambiguous and has never been firmly established. We have studied mtDNA (control region and cytochrome b gene) and nuclear DNA (a part of LDH C*1 gene) variation between soft-muzzled trout from the upper part of the River Neretva, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other salmonid representatives in order to examine how the current classification is congruent with molecular data. On the basis of sequence identity of mtDNA control region among several genera (i.e. Salmo , Oncorhynchus , Salvelinus , Acantholingua , Brachymystax , Thymallus and Coregonus ) a close relationship between Salmothymus , Salmo and Acantholingua was established. Phylogenetic analysis on a combined data set of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, supported by 100% bootstraping, indicated that S. obtusirostris and A. ohridana are sister taxa which exhibit a closer relationship to S. trutta than to S. salar . This finding refutes the current classification, which recognizes S. obtusirostris as separate genus, and instead suggests its reclassification on the species level as Salmo obtusirostris .  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 399–411.  相似文献

The Seychelles harbour an endemic frog family, the Sooglossidae, currently containing two genera: Sooglossus , with three species, and Nesomantis , with one species. These unique frogs are generally considered to be basal neobatrachians, although their relationships to other neobatrachian taxa, except the Nasikabatrachidae, remain unresolved. Our molecular phylogeny based on a dataset consisting of fragments of the nuclear rag-1 and rag-2 genes, as well as mitochondrial 16S rRNA in representatives of the major neobatrachian lineages, confirmed the previously postulated Sooglossidae + Nasikabatrachidae clade and the placement of the South American Caudiverbera with the Australian Myobatrachidae, but did not further resolve the position of sooglossids. Our results do, however, unambiguously show sooglossids to be monophyletic but the genus Sooglossus to be paraphyletic, with the type species Sooglossus sechellensis being more closely related to Nesomantis thomasseti than to Sooglossus gardineri and Sooglossus pipilodryas , in agreement with morphological, karyological, and bioacoustic data. As a taxonomic consequence, we propose to consider the genus name Nesomantis as junior synonym of Sooglossus , and to transfer the species thomasseti to Sooglossus . For the clade composed of the species gardineri and pipilodryas , here, we propose the new generic name Leptosooglossus . A significant genetic differentiation of 3% was found between specimens of Sooglossus thomasseti from the Mahé and Silhouette Islands, highlighting the need for further studies on their possible taxonomic distinctness.   © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 347–359.  相似文献

Seven new species of the genus Haploniscus from the deep Scotia and Weddell Seas are presented, combining morphological and molecular data (mitochondrial 16S rDNA and nuclear 18S rDNA). Haploniscus cassilatus sp. nov. , H. cucullus sp. nov. , H. weddellensis sp. nov. , H. procerus sp. nov. and H. kyrbasia sp. nov. are characterized by a prominent rostral process, the size and shape of which vary among species. The rostrum of H. microkorys sp. nov. is distinctly smaller than that of the former species, while H. nudifrons sp. nov. does not possess a rostrum. The status of the latter as separate species is obvious, owing to the stronger morphological differences. DNA was sequenced from three of the other five species. Genetic distances together with the more subtle morphological variation justify the erection of separate species. Overall morphological variations between these species are small yet noticeable and include, among others, the rostrum, the shape of the pleotelson and setation of pereopods. Our molecular data sets reveal detailed phylogenetic insights within the Haploniscus cucullus complex, supporting the monophyly of all species. We found p -distances of at least 0.0732 (16S rDNA) and 0.0140 (complete 18S rDNA) between pairs of species and show that both genes can be used as a marker for DNA taxonomy.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 655–706.  相似文献

The genus Mus encompasses at least 38 species divided into four subgenera: Mus , Pyromys , Nannomys and Coelomys . The subgenus Mus , which comprises the house mouse and related species, is by far the most extensively studied, although the subgenus Nannomys is the most speciose. Although the relationships within the subgenus Mus are rather well characterized, those between subgenera are still unclear. In the present study, phylogenetic analyses of the whole genus were performed using a larger species sample of Nannomys than in previous studies, and a nuclear gene (IRBP) in addition to mitochondrial data (cytochrome b and 12S rRNA). Members of the Acomyinae and Murinae were used as outgroups. Separate and combined analyses were performed with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods, and divergence times were estimated. The results showed that the monophyly of the genus Mus and of each subgenus was strongly supported by the three genes and the combined analysis. The phylogenies derived from the three genes were on the whole congruent; however, several conflicting topologies were observed such as the relationships between the three Asian species of the subgenus Mus ( caroli , cervicolor and cookii ). Increasing the taxonomic sampling of Nannomys did not satisfactorily improve the resolution of relationships between the four subgenera. In addition, molecular calibrations indicate that the Mus and Nannomys radiation coincided with major environmental changes.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 417–427.  相似文献

To estimate the potential contribution of ethological and ecological parameters to the mechanisms of species formation and species isolation in the Palearctic cicada genus Tibicina , we constructed a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis of extant Tibicina species. Seven mitochondrial genes and a fragment of a nuclear gene were sequenced (3046 bp). Mitochondrial genes included 547 informative sites but the nuclear gene was too conserved to be included in the analysis. The tree was characterized by a basal polytomy indicating that Tibicina species arose rapidly. Such rapid radiation might explain the low divergence in the acoustic communication observed between species. Parameters describing habitat selection and acoustic communication were mapped onto the tree. A shift in habitat selection accompanied by acoustic changes might have contributed to one speciation event. The stochastic distribution of the same acoustic characters on the other branches of the tree implies, however, that the subtle acoustic differences between species could be the result of previous speciation events and independent evolutionary histories, rather than having contributed themselves in the speciation and isolation processes.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 611–626.  相似文献

Shrimps from the genus Lysmata are known because of their wide diversity of lifestyles, mating systems, symbiotic partnerships, and conspicuous coloration. They can occur in crowds (large aggregations), in small groups, or as socially monogamous pairs. Shrimps from this genus are rare, if not unique among crustaceans, because of their unusual sexual system. To date, the sexual system of all species investigated comprises a protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism: shrimps initially mature and reproduce as males and later in life turn into functional simultaneous hermaphrodites. The evolutionary relationships of the species within the genus are unsettled. A molecular phylogeny of the group may shed light on the evolutionary origins of the peculiar sexual and social systems of these shrimps and help resolve standing taxonomic questions long overdue. Using a 647-bp alignment of the 16S rRNA mitochondrial DNA, we examined the phylogenetic relationship of 21 species of shrimps from the genus Lysmata from several biogeographical regions; the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indo-Pacific. The resulting phylogeny indicates that the genus is paraphyletic and includes the genus Exhippolysmata . The constituent species are subdivided into three well supported clades: one group exclusively composed of neotropical species; a second clade comprising the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic symbiotic fish cleaner shrimps; and a third clade including tropical and temperate species from the Atlantic and Pacific. The molecular phylogeny presented here does not support a historical contingency hypothesis, previously proposed to explain the origins of protandric simultaneous hermaphroditism within the genus. Furthermore, the present study shows that monogamous pair-living is restricted to one monophyletic group of shrimps and therefore probably evolved only once.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 415–424.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among assumed Gondwanan aquatic inland invertebrate fauna are generally largely neglected, and biogeographical hypotheses for these organisms are generally inferred from historic (palaeogeographical) and contemporary distribution patterns. The distribution of the monogeneric thermophilic freshwater fairy shrimp family Streptocephalidae ( Streptocephalus ) provides a particularly useful framework to test the three contrasting biogeographical scenarios proposed for the evolution of this group: (1) the genus evolved in Laurasia and subsequently dispersed into Africa and North America; (2) the genus evolved and dispersed out of Africa and (3) the current distribution of the genus is the result of vicariance following the fragmentation of Gondwana. In the present study, the phylogenetic relationships of species in this genus are examined with the use of two mitochondrial genes (12S rRNA and COI mtDNA), while the phylogenetic relationships among the North American species and selected African taxa was investigated using the nuclear fragment (5.8S-ITS-1-18S). Phylogenetic results indicate that Streptocephalus probably evolved in Gondwana and that the current distribution patterns are a consequence of a combination of vicariance and limited dispersal. The implications for the evolution of continental freshwater crustaceans are discussed.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 313–327.  相似文献

The taxonomy and systematics of the New Caledonian endemic caddisfly genus Gracilipsodes Sykora, 1967 (Trichoptera: Leptoceridae: Grumichellini) are reviewed. Seven new species represented by males are described and illustrated: Gracilipsodes aoupiniensis sp. nov. , Gracilipsodes aureus sp. nov. , Gracilipsodes aurorus sp. nov. , Gracilipsodes grandis sp. nov. , Gracilipsodes koghiensis sp. nov. , Gracilipsodes lanceolatus sp. nov. , and Gracilipsodes robustus sp. nov. Molecular phylogenetic analyses are applied to discern the relationships among the species of the genus and their closest relatives, based on sequence characters from the nuclear gene translation elongation factor-1α (EF-1α) and the three mitochondrial genes cytochrome oxidase I (COI), COII, and ribosomal large subunit (16S). The data are analyzed using parsimony and Bayesian inference, revealing a monophyletic Gracilipsodes with the eastern Australian monotypic genus Triplexa as its closest relative. Gracilipsodes is in turn divided into two major lineages.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 153 , 425–452.  相似文献

The genus Mus encompasses 38 species of mice divided into four subgenera: Mus , Pyromys , Nannomys and Coelomys . Each of these four taxa is characterized by discrete morphological as well as biochemical traits. We used two different molecular approaches to determine the relationships between these subgenera: DNA/DNA hybridization and 12S rRNA mitochondrial sequences. We compared the resulting phylogenies from each method and with phylogenies derived from morphological data. The degree of resolution of each molecular approach is discussed. The two molecular studies indicate that Mus , Pyromys , Nannomys and Coelomys are clearly distinct monophyletic groups, as previously indicated by morphological data and other biochemical and molecular approaches. There is one divergence between previous morphological and the molecular and morphological studies presented here: the position of the Indian species Mus famulus . This taxon, which was formerly included in the subgenus Coelomys , is demonstrated here to belong to the subgenus Mus. We also propose the following relationships within Mus sensu lato : Mus and Pyromys are the closest relatives, followed by Nannomys and Coelomys , whose relationships are still unclear. This arrangement is more robustly supported by DNA/DNA hybridization than by 12S rRNA data. A molecular time scale for the evolution within Mus sensu lato is proposed, using as a reference the Mus/Rattus divergence estimated by the fossil record at around 12 mya.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 137 , 385–401.  相似文献

Vigtorniella ardabilia sp. nov. , a new chrysopetalid annelid, is described from a whale‐fall in Sweden and from sediment samples collected beneath fish farms in Norway. The new Vigtorniella species is morphologically almost identical to Vigtorniella flokati from whale‐falls in the Pacific Ocean, although molecular evidence from four genes shows that they are different species. Population genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships of V. ardabilia sp. nov. were assessed using molecular data from the nuclear genes 18S and 28S, and the mitochondrial 16S and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). High levels of gene flow are reported between contrasting organic‐rich environments in the North Atlantic (fish farms and whale‐fall). Observations of feeding biology and habitat suggest that V. ardabilia specializes on bacterial mats, rather than on whale‐falls, although the two species of Vigtorniella for which data were available show very different feeding behaviours. Our results further showed an unexpectedly low divergence rate in Vigtorniella for the mitochondrial markers, suggesting stabilizing selection. Analyses carried out with parsimony, maximum likelihood, and MrBayes all placed the genus Vigtorniella as sister group to Dysponetus, suggesting a close evolutionary link to sediment‐dwelling fauna. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 774–785.  相似文献

Morphologically intermediate plants between Weigela hortensis (Siebold & Zucc.) K.Koch and W. maximowiczii (S.Moore) Rehder have been found in Miyagi and Yamagata Pref., northern Japan. Quantitative character analyses of flowers, pollen stainability and molecular analyses indicated that the intermediate plants were hybrids of those two species. This is the first record of an intersectional hybrid with W. maximowiczii (sect. Weigelastrum ) as one of the parent species. The morphological differences among hybrid individuals imply the possibility of backcrosses or formation of second or later generations of hybrids, although those may be quite rare because of a low frequency of viable pollen grains. Causes of hybridization between two distantly-related species in Weigela are discussed. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 138 , 369–380.  相似文献

Cytological features are presented for the first time for 12 species and one natural hybrid from 16 Brazilian populations of the genus Xyris , including members of two sections ( Xyris and Nematopus ). The results are compared with a review of all available chromosome numbers previously reported for the genus. All analysed species show semi-reticulate interphase nuclei and prophase to prometaphase chromosomes with heterogeneous condensing behaviour. Chromosome numbers varied between 2 n = 26 and 2 n ≈ 108. In Brazil especially, the karyological differentiation of Xyris seems to be generally characterized by dysploid and polyploid increase of the chromosome number, possibly after interspecific hybridization. This is the first cytological study including species of the section Nematopus and the first karyological investigation including South American species of the genus Xyris . © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 138 , 245–252.  相似文献

The genus Phora (Diptera, Phoridae) includes more than 50 species widely distributed in temperate regions of Eurasia and Africa. Taxonomic identification of most species is based upon the morphology of the male hypopygium: hence for many species, including the type species of the genus, females are unknown. We used mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA sequences to match males with previously unidentified females from Phora atra , P. stictica , and P. holosericea . We then identified morphological characters that allow identification of females of P. atra and P. stictica without recourse to DNA sequencing. Our results show that small scale sequencing can aid in the development of taxonomic characters for use in the field to identify previously cryptic females. This iterative method of identifying populations genetically followed by re-examination of morphology should allow development of better keys for rapid identification of heretofore cryptic populations of insects. We also found that sequences from individual of P. holosericea from Cambridge, England and Malakhovka, Russia, were more similar to each other than to sequences from a conspecific fly also collected in Cambridge. This result suggests that there is previously un-suspected population structuring in this species.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 267–273.  相似文献
