The early radiation of cetaceans coincides with the origin of?their defining ecological and sensory differences [1, 2]. Toothed whales (Odontoceti) evolved echolocation for hunting 36-34 million years ago, whereas baleen whales (Mysticeti) evolved filter feeding and do not echolocate [2]. Echolocation in toothed whales demands exceptional high-frequency hearing [3], and both echolocation and ultrasonic hearing have also evolved independently in bats [4, 5]. The motor protein Prestin that drives the electromotility of the outer hair cells (OHCs) is likely to be especially important in ultrasonic hearing, because it is the vibratory response of OHC to incoming sound waves that confers the enhanced sensitivity and selectivity of the mammalian auditory system [6, 7]. Prestin underwent adaptive change early in mammal?evolution [8] and also shows sequence convergence between bats and dolphins [9, 10], as well as within bats [11]. Focusing on whales, we show for the first time that the extent of protein evolution in Prestin can be linked directly to the evolution of high-frequency hearing. Moreover, we find that independent cases of sequence convergence in mammals have involved numerous identical amino acid site replacements. Our findings shed new light on the?importance of Prestin in the evolution of mammalian hearing.  相似文献

Individuals tend to interact more strongly with nearby individuals or within particular social groups. Recent theoretical advances have demonstrated that these within-population relationships can have fundamental implications for ecological and evolutionary dynamics [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10] and [11]. In particular, contact networks are crucial to the spread [12], [13] and [14] and evolution [8], [9], [11] and [15] of disease. However, the theory remains largely untested experimentally [16]. Here, we manipulate habitat viscosity and thereby the frequency of local interactions in an insect-pathogen model system in which the virus had previously been shown to have little effect on host population dynamics [16] and [17]. At high viscosity, the pathogen caused the collapse of dominant and otherwise stable host generation cycles. Modeling shows that this collapse can be explained by an increase in the frequency of intracohort interactions relative to intercohort interactions, leading to more disease transmission. Our work emphasizes that spatial structure can subtly mediate intraspecific competition and the effects of natural enemies. A decrease in dispersal in a population may actually (sometimes rather counterintuitively) intensify the effects of parasites. Broadly, because anthropological and environmental change often cause changes in population mixing, our work highlights the potential for dramatic changes in the effects of parasites on host populations.  相似文献

We show results complementary to papers by Bardsley and Waight [2, 3], Gibson and Levin [13], Goldbeter [14], and Karlin [19] on sigmoidicity as an essential feature of allosteric models, possibly leading to a criterion of choice between these. In particular, we give the explicit form for the second derivative of the saturation function in the MWC case, and also the calculation of the binding polynomial in the circular KNF case. First, we give analytical conditions of sigmoidicity for each characteristic function in the MWC and KNF allosteric models. In the MWC model, the regions of sigmoidicity are different for the state and saturation functions, and when the catalytic activities of the two conformational states are different, the area of sigmoidicity is significantly larger for the steady-state rate function than for the saturation function. Furthermore, we rigorously prove the existence of mixed kinetic cooperativity in certain conditions. In the KNF model, the state and saturation functions are the same and their sigmoidicity depends only on the degree of coupling between subunits and on the relative stability of the asymmetrically induced subunit interactions. Finally, we suggest a theoretical criterion for discrimination between allosteric models.  相似文献

The complexes [Pt(dapo)2Cl2], [PtNH3(dapo)Cl2], [Pt(py)(dapo)Cl2], [Pt(mbpo)Cl2].H2O, [Pt(mbpo)(OH)2Cl2].H2O, [Pd(dapo)2Cl2], and [Pd(mbpo)Cl2], where dapo is dimethyl aminomethylphosphine oxide and mbpo is methyl bis(aminomethyl)phosphite oxide have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, electric conductivity, infrared, 1H NMR and electronic spectra. The ligands are found to be coordinated only via the amino groups. The complexes are of cis-square planar configuration with the exception of [Pt(mbpo)(OH)2Cl2].H2O which is pseudo-octahedral. An in vivo antitumor screening of the complexes against Leukemia L1210 was performed. A considerable activity (T/C = 233%) was observed for [PtNH3(dapo)Cl2]. The activity of the remaining complexes was below the accepted criterion.  相似文献

The relationship between environment and mutation is complex [1]. Claims of Lamarkian mutation [2] have proved unfounded [3], [4] and [5]; it is apparent, however, that the external environment can influence the generation of heritable variation, through either direct effects on DNA sequence [6] or DNA maintenance and copying mechanisms [7], [8], [9] and [10], or as a consequence of evolutionary processes [11], [12], [13], [14], [15] and [16]. The spectrum of mutational events subject to environmental influence is unknown [6] and precisely how environmental signals modulate mutation is unclear. Evidence from bacteria suggests that a transient recombination-dependent hypermutational state can be induced by starvation [5]. It is also apparent that chnages in the mutability of specific loci can be influenced by alterations in DNA topology [10] and [17]. Here we describe a remarkable instance of adaptive evolution in Salmonella which is caused by a mutation that occurs in intermediate-strength osmotic environments. We show that the mutation is not ‘directed’ and describe its genetic basis. We also present compelling evidence in support of the hypothesis that the mutational event is constrained by signals transmitted from the external environment via changes in the activity of DNA gyrase.  相似文献

Microsporidia are small (1–20 μm) obligate intracellular parasites of a variety of eukaryotes, and they are serious opportunistic pathogens of immunocompromised patients [1]. Microsporidia are often assigned to the first branch in gene trees of eukaryotes [2] and [3], and are reported to lack mitochondria [2] and [4]. Like diplomonads and trichomonads, microsporidia are hypothesised to have diverged from the main eukaryotic stock prior to the event that led to the mitochondrion endosymbiosis [2] and [4]. They have thus assumed importance as putative relics of premitochondrion eukaryote evolution. Recent data have now revealed that diplomonads and trichomonads contain genes that probably originated from the mitochondrion endosymbiont [5], [6], [7], [8] and [9], leaving microsporidia as chief candidates for an extant primitively amitochondriate eukaryote group. We have now identified a gene in the microsporidium Vairimorpha necatrix that appears to be orthologous to the eukaryotic (symbiont-derived) Hsp70 gene, the protein product of which normally functions in mitochondria. The simplest interpretation of our data is that microporidia have lost mitochondria while retaining genetic evidence of their past presence. This strongly suggests that microsporidia are not primitively amitochondriate and makes feasible an evolutionary scenario whereby all extant eukaryotes share a common ancestor which contained mitochondria.  相似文献

Motivated by mechanical analysis of bones and bone-implant systems, a 3D constitutive law describing the macroscopic mechanical behaviour of both cortical and trabecular bone in cyclic (not fatigue) overloads is developed. The proposed model which mathematical formulation is established within the framework of generalized standard materials accounts for three distinct material evolution modes where elastic, plastic and damage aspects are closely related. The anisotropic elasticity of bone is described by a morphology-based model and distinct damage behaviour in tension and compression by a halfspacewise generalized Hill criterion. The plastic criterion is based on the intact elastic compliance tensor. The algorithm applies three distinct projections based on the relationship between the internal variables and criteria. Their respective consistent tangent operators are presented. Numerical resolutions of several boundary value problems and a biomechanical application are presented to illustrate the potential of the constitutive model and demonstrate the expected quadratic convergence of the algorithm.  相似文献

In Aesop's fable “The Crow and the Pitcher,” a thirsty crow uses stones to raise the level of water in a pitcher and quench its thirst. A number of corvids have been found to use tools in the wild [1], [2], [3] and [4], and New Caledonian crows appear to understand the functional properties of tools and solve complex physical problems via causal and analogical reasoning [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10] and [11]. The rook, another member of the corvid family that does not appear to use tools in the wild, also appears able to solve non-tool-related problems via similar reasoning [12]. Here, we present evidence that captive rooks are also able to solve a complex problem by using tools. We presented four captive rooks with a problem analogous to Aesop's fable: raising the level of water so that a floating worm moved into reach. All four subjects solved the problem with an appreciation of precisely how many stones were needed. Three subjects also rapidly learned to use large stones over small ones, and that sawdust cannot be manipulated in the same manner as water. This behavior demonstrates a flexible ability to use tools, a finding with implications for the evolution of tool use and cognition in animals.  相似文献

A leading theory for the origin of modern humans, the ‘recent African origin’ (RAO) model [1], postulates that the ancestors of all modern humans originated in East Africa and that, around 100,000 years ago, some modern humans left the African continent and subsequently colonised the entire world, displacing previously established human species such as Neanderthals in Europe 2., 3.. Predation is a powerful agent of natural selection, driving the evolution of antipredator calls [1]. These calls have been shown to communicate predator category [2-4] and/or predator distance to conspecifics [5-7]. However, the risk posed by predators depends also on predator behavior [8], and the ability of prey to communicate predator behavior to conspecifics would be a selective advantage reducing their predation risk. I tested this idea in Siberian jays (Perisoreus infaustus), a group-living bird species. Predation by hawks, and to a lesser extent by owls, is substantial and the sole cause of mortality in adult jays [9]. By using field data and predator-exposure experiments, I show here that jays used antipredator calls for hawks depending on predator behavior. A playback experiment demonstrated that these prey-to-prey calls were specific to hawk behavior (perch, prey search, attack) and elicited distinct, situation-specific escape responses. This is the first study to demonstrate that prey signals convey information about predator behavior to conspecifics. Given that antipredator calls in jays aim at protecting kin group members [10, 11], consequently lowering their mortality [9], kin-selected benefits could be an important factor for the evolution of predator-behavior-specific antipredator calls in such systems.  相似文献

In a previous work [Chem. Phys. Lipids 2000 104, 49], we have derived the following rate law for the oxidation of lipids in compartmentalized systems: R(T)=(k(1)/k(t))(0.5) k(p) [In](0.5) c(0.5) [LH], where, R(T) is the total rate of oxidation, k(1) is the rate constant for the production of free radicals, k(t) and k(p) are the intra-particle rate constants for the termination and propagation sets, respectively, [In] is the concentration of a water-soluble initiator, c is the concentration of particles, and [LH] is the intra-particle concentration of oxidable lipid. In the present work, we have investigated on the applicability of the proposed kinetic rate law for a system where it takes place the oxidation of a reactive lipid incorporated into an inert matrix. With this purpose, we have measured the rate of oxidation of linoleic acid incorporated into dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles initiated by the thermal decomposition of 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride as a function of the initiator, particles, and intra-particle LH concentrations. The experimentally determined kinetic orders obtained were 0.54+/-0.02, 0.48+/-0.05 and 0.83+/-0.04 for the dependence of the oxidation rate with initiator, particles, and LH intra-particle concentrations, respectively, in agreement with those theoretically predicted. The lower value obtained for the kinetic order in LH is attributed to a change in k(t) with the increase in oxidable lipid intra-particle concentration. The main point to be emphazised from the results here obtained is that the kinetic rate law for the oxidation of lipids in compartmentalized systems can be significantly different than that observed when to the oxidation takes place in homogeneous solution.  相似文献

Mecoptera and Siphonaptera represent two insect orders that have largely been overlooked in the study of insect vision. Recent phylogenetic evidence demonstrates that Mecoptera (scorpionflies) is paraphyletic, with the order Siphonaptera (fleas) nesting as sister to the family Boreidae (snow fleas), showing an evolutionary trend towards reduction in gross eye morphology within fleas. We provide the first molecular characterization of long-wavelength opsins from these three lineages (opsin gene from fleas [FL-Opsin], the Boreidae [B-Opsin], and a mecopteran family [M-Opsin]) and assess the effects of loss of visual acuity on the structure and function of the opsin gene. Phylogenetic analysis implies a physiological sensitivity in the red-green spectrum for these opsins. Analysis of intron splice sites reveals a high degree of similarity between FL-Opsin and B-Opsin as well as conserved splice sites across insect blue-green and long-wavelength opsins. Calculated rates of evolution and tests for destabilizing selection indicate that FL-Opsin, B-Opsin, and M-Opsin are evolving at similar rates with no radical selective pressures, implying conservative evolution and functional constraint across all three lineages.  相似文献

We present a new extension of Gompertz law for tumour growth and anti-tumour therapy. After discussing its qualitative and analytical properties, we show, in the spirit of [16], that, like the standard Gompertz model, it is fully compatible with the two-population model of Gyllenberg and Webb, formulated in [14] in order to provide a theoretical basis to Gompertz law. Compatibility with the model proposed in [17] is also investigated. Comparisons with some experimental data confirm the practical applicability of the model. This note presents theoretical and numerical calculations which investigate the adequacy of the sigma(0 -- E)2/E approximation (Peto and Pike [1973]) when applying the Mantel/Haenszel summary chisquare statistic to the comparison of r life tables in the manner suggested by Mantel [1966], Peto and Peto [1972], and Cox [1972]. These indicate that conservatism is mild unless there are marked differences in the withdrawal patterns in the r tables. Such differences may, however, be anticipated in the case of a generalization of the life table procedure suggested by Crowley [1973], Mantel and Byar [1974], and Turnbull, Brown, and Hu [1974], wherein individuals are moved from one life table to another according to changes in their treatment (or other) statuses.  相似文献

Steady state kinetic measurements are reported for nitrogenase from Azotobacter vinelandii (Av) and Clostridium pasteurianum (Cp) under a variety of conditions, using dithionite as reductant. The specific activities of Av1 and Cp1 are determined as functions of Av2:Av1 and Cp2:Cp1, respectively, at component protein ratios from 0.4 to 50, and conform to a simple hyperbolic rate law for the interaction of Av2 with Av1 and Cp2 with Cp1. The specific activities of Av2 and Cp2 are also measured as a function of increasing Av1 and Cp1 concentrations, producing 'MoFe inhibition' at large MoFe:Fe ratios. When the rate of product formation under MoFe inhibited conditions is re-plotted as increasing Av2:Av1 or Cp2:Cp1 ratios, sigmoidal kinetic behavior is observed, suggesting that the rate constants in the Thorneley and Lowe (T&L) model are more dependent upon the oxidation level of MoFe protein than previously suspected [R.N.F. Thorneley, D.J. Lowe, Biochem. J. 224 (1984) 887-894], at least when applied to Av and Cp. Calculation of Hill coefficients gave values of 1.7-1.9, suggesting a highly cooperative Fe-MoFe protein interaction in both Av and Cp nitrogenase catalysis. The T&L model lacks analytical solutions [R.N.F. Thorneley, D.J. Lowe, Biochem. J. 215 (1983) 393-404], so the ease of its application to experimental data is limited. To facilitate the study of steady state kinetic data for H(2) evolution, analytical equations are derived from a different mechanism for nitrogenase activity, similar to that of Bergersen and Turner [Biochem. J. 131 (1973) 61-75]. This alternative cooperative model assumes that two Fe proteins interact with one MoFe protein active site. The derived rate laws for this mechanism were fitted to the observed sigmoidal behavior for low Fe:MoFe ratios (<0.4), as well as to the commonly observed hyperbolic behavior for high values of Fe:MoFe for both Av and Cp.  相似文献

1. The patterns of 14CO2 evolution from specifically labeled glucose substrates by washed bull, ram, boar, rabbit, dog, rooster and turkey spermatozoa were similar and indicated the Embden-Meyerhof and Kreb's cycle pathways as the major route of energy metabolism. 2. Honey bee spermatozoa metabolized glucose-3,4-[14C], glucose-[U-14C] or fructose-[U-14C], but not glucose-1-[14C], glucose-2-[14C]or glucose-6-[14C], indicating the presence of the glycolytic pathway, but the absence of respiration via the Kreb's cycle. 3. The rate of glycolysis exceeded the rate of respiration in the spermatozoa of all the species studied. 4. A preferential utilization of glucose-1-[14C] over glucose-6-[14C] was evident in some sperm samples, but no consistent indication of pentose cycle metabolism was observed, due to considerable variability between samples within each group. 5. Fructose metabolism was greater than glucose metabolism in the rooster, less in the dog, boar and turkey, and similar in the spermatozoa from the other species examined. 6. Only ram and bull spermatozoa metabolized acetate-1-[14C] to any extent.  相似文献
