The present study was focused on the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oils (EsO) obtained from five Lamiaceae representatives grown in the south of Ukraine. Among them are Salvia sclarea L., Monarda didyma (cultivar ‘Cambridge Scarlet’), Thymus pulegioides (cultivar ‘2/6-07’), Thymus vulgaris (cultivar ‘Jalos’), and Thymus serpyllum L. The component analysis of the EsO was carried out by gas chromatography method coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The antimicrobial properties of the EsO were determined using the agar diffusion test against widespread pathogenic bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes) and opportunistic yeast Candida albicans. The EsO of Thymus serpyllum and Thymus vulgaris (cultivar ‘Jalos’) displayed noteworthy antibacterial properties against a wide spectrum of the microorganisms. These antimicrobial properties could be attributed to the high content of aromatic monoterpenoid thymol (52.56% and 47.33%, respectively). The EsO of Salvia sclarea with the dominance of linalyl acetate (45.51%) and linalool (38.98%) as well as Thymus pulegioides (cultivar ‘2/6-07’) containing α-citral (27.10%) and β-citral (17.11%) demonstrated the strongest antimicrobial effects on typical and clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus with the inhibition zones in the range of 24.0–31.0 mm. The Salvia sclarea EsO demonstrated the most significant effect against clinical strains of Candida albicans. In conclusion, the present study revealed the chemical composition of five Lamiaceae species and cultivars grown in the south of Ukraine and considerable antimicrobial activity of the tested EsO, especially against the typical and clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The obtained results could be perspective for applying in the pharmaceutical industry and for the conservation of food and cosmetic products.  相似文献

Mosquitoes bite human beings and transmit many diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus. Vector control of mosquitoes is an effective strategy for reducing the spread of disease. However, extensive use of insecticides (e.g. pyrethroids and organophosphorus) has caused resistance in mosquitoes, which weakens the effectiveness of mosquito control. Phytochemicals have been considered an alternative approach to mosquito control. Essential oil (EO) was obtained from the leaves and flowers of Origanum vulgare, and its synergistic activity with piperonyl butoxide (PBO) was tested against Aedes albopictus and Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus larvae. Thirty-seven compounds were identified, among which carvacrol and thymol were two major constituents (30.73 % and 18.81 %, respectively). O. vulgare EO had a significant toxic effect against fourth-stage larvae of Cx. p. quinquefasciatus and Ae. albopictus, with LC50 values of 17.51 and 75.90 mg/L. Carvacrol and thymol also each appeared to be more effective against Cx. p. quinquefasciatus (LC50 = 19.30 and 11.56 mg/L, respectively) than Ae. albopictus (LC50 = 26.62 and 26.66 mg/L, respectively). PBO interacted synergistically with O. vulgare EO, carvacrol and thymol with 2.60–6.26 times as much of the active compound needed without PBO as against Cx. p. quinquefasciatus and Ae. albopictus larvae. Overall, our results contribute to the development of new natural mosquito insecticides.  相似文献

Tagetes minuta L., generally known as wild marigold and locally as “Kakiebos”, has been used traditionally for medicinal purposes in many countries around the world. South Africa is currently the major producer of Tagetes essential oil which is used in perfumery, cosmetics and aromatherapy. The organoleptic and therapeutic properties of an essential oil are dependent upon the chemical profile of the oil. Tagetes essential oil from India, Egypt and the United Kingdom has been reported to be highly variable. In this study, possible chemotypic variation of South African Tagetes oil was explored. Eighty-three individual plants were collected from twenty-one different localities in South Africa. Essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus and the oil yield obtained ranged between 0.38 and 1.52%. The essential oils were analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry with flame ionisation detector (GC–MS‒FID) and the major compounds accounting for >85% of the total composition were identified as: (Z)-β-ocimene (27.9–56.0%), (E)-ocimenone (7.4–37.2%), (Z)-tagetone (1.4–24.9%), dihydrotagetone (n.d.−23.4%), (Z)-ocimenone (4.5–13.9%), limonene (n.d.−6.5%) and (E)-tagetone (n.d.−3.2%). Untargeted analysis of GC–MS data using MarkerLynx® and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) revealed two major chemotypes. Further analysis of the two chemotypes using orthogonal projections to latent structures-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) identified (E)-tagetone, dihydrotagetone and (Z)-tagetone as characteristic marker constituents for chemotype 1, while chemotype 2 was characterised by (Z)-β-ocimene, (E)-ocimenone and (Z)-ocimenone.  相似文献

Leonotis leonurus widely used by traditional healers in southern Africa for treatment of various ailments, is well known for its reported psychoactive properties. The present study was undertaken to investigate the variation in essential oil composition between geographically distinct populations of L. leonurus in South Africa using gas chromatography. Plant material (n = 50) was collected from three provinces of South Africa. Essential oils of the aerial parts were obtained by hydrodistillation and analysed using one and two dimensional gas chromatography. Twenty-six compounds accounted for more than 80% of the total composition of the oil. Eight major constituents in the oil, representing about 50% of the total oil composition, were identified by both GC–MS–FID and GCxGC–ToF–MS. These major compounds were trans-β-ocimene (0.1–5.0%), cis-β-ocimene (0.1–31.5%), β-caryophyllene (0.3–15.0%), caryophyllene oxide (0.1–5.0%), α-humulene (0.4–18.2%), γ-elemene (0.4–10.6%), α-cubebene (0.2–12.0%) and germacrene D (0.1–22.1%). Marked similarities exist in the essential oil composition between populations; differences are mostly quantitative when determined by GC–MS–FID, while GCxGC–ToF–MS data reveals both quantitative and qualitative differences.Untargeted multivariate analysis was performed using SIMCA-P + 14.0 PCA and OPLS-DA methods, identifying two distinct clusters, inland and coastal populations.  相似文献

The hydrodistillated essential oil of Salvia hydrangea was analyzed by GC–MS. Fifty-four different components representing 95.9% of the compounds in the oil were identified. Camphor (54.2%), -humulene (4.0%), cis-sesquisabinene hydrate (2.8%), myrtenol (2.6%), β-bisabolol (2.2%) and 1,8-cineole (2.1%) were found to be predominant components. The oil was also characterized by relatively high amount of oxygenated monoterpenes (69.6%). The oil was tested for fungitoxic effects against 33 agricultural pathogenic fungi using in vitro microbial growth inhibition assays. The oil exhibited considerable antifungal activity against a broad spectrum of tested fungi. Antibacterial activity of the oil was determined against 30 bacterial strains using the disc diffusion method. The oil had a very wide spectrum of antibacterial activity. However, it was not as active as penicillin. The oil showed 68.3–75.0% mortality against adults of Sitophilus granarius and Tribolium confusum, the major pests of wheat and wheat products, respectively. It can be concluded that the oil of S. hydrangea has a potential against agricultural pathogenic fungi and two stored pests, S. granarius and T. confusum.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the chemical composition of leaves fromAgastache rugosa were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Phytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of its essential oil were investigated by characterizing 31 components, primarily methylchavicol (80.24%),dl-limonene (3.50%), linalool (4.23%), 5-methyl-2-(1-methylethylidene)-cyclohexanone (3.84%), and β-caryophyllene (2.39%). The contents of most of these chemical constituents varied significantly (P<0.05) over time, with the highest oil yield being early in the growing season (May). Their phytotoxic effects on the seed germination ofMajorana hortensis, Trifolium repens, Rudbeckia hirta, Chrysanthemum zawadskii var.latilobum, Melissa officinalis,Taraxacum platycarpum, andTagetes patula also were determined. These oils partially or completely inhibited germination, and prevented the growth of radicles and hypocotyls. Results of antimicrobial testing showed that the oils also entirely blocked the growth of four microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus sub.aures, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, andPseudomonas aeruginosa). These inhibitory effects might depend on the activity of methylchavicol, a main compound inA. rugosa.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe essential oil from the leaves of Ocimum kilimandscharicum (EOOK), collected in Dourados-MS, was investigated for anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity and chemical composition.Materials and methodsThe essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and the chemical composition was performed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The essential oil was evaluated for free radical-scavenging activity using the DPPH assay and was tested in an anticancer assay against ten human cancer cell lines. The response parameter (GI50) was calculated for the cell lines tested. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using carrageenan-induced pleurisy in mice.ResultsThe chemical composition showed 45 components with a predominance of monoterpenes, such as camphor (51.81%), 1,8 cineole (20.13%) and limonene (11.23%). The EOOK exhibited potent free radical-scavenging activity by the DPPH assay with a GI50 of 8.31 μg/ml. The major constituents, pure camphor (IC50 = 12.56 μg/ml) and mixture of the limonene: 1, 8 cineole (IC50 = 23.25 μg/ml) displayed a potent activity. The oral administration of EOOK (at 30 and 100 mg kg−1), as well as the pure camphor or a mixture of 1,8 cineole with limonene, significantly inhibited the carrageenan (Cg) induced pleurisy, reducing the migration of total leukocytes in mice by 82 ± 4% (30 mg kg−1 of EOOK), 95 ± 4% (100 mg kg−1 of EOOK), 83 ± 9% (camphor) and 80 ± 5% (mixture of 1,8 cineole:limonene 1:1). In vitro cytotoxicity screening against a human ovarian cancer cell line displayed high selectivity and potent anticancer activity with GI50 = 31.90 mg ml−1. This work describes the anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant effects of EOOK for the first time.ConclusionsThe essential oil exhibited marked anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer effects, an effect that can be attributed the presence of majorital compounds, and the response profiles from chemical composition differed from other oils collected in different locales.  相似文献

Cinnamomum is the largest genus of Lauraceae family and has been used as spices, food, and food additives by the people. Total 15 Cinnamomum species are distributed in different parts of Indian sub-continent. Different parts (leaves, stem bark, stem wood, roots, flowers, and fruits) of these species were shade-dried and used for the determination of essential oils. A total of 19 essential oils were identified and quantified from the different parts of (leaf, stem bark, stem wood, root, flower, and fruit) of 15 Cinnamomum species. The stem bark of C. altissimum was rich in the presence of essential oils (52.2 %) whereas minimum levels of essential oils were recorded in roots (17.9 %). The γ-terpinene (11.1 %) was reported as the major component essential oil in C. subavenium flowers. Methanol extract of C. camphora stem wood showed stronger lowest minimum inhibitory concentration against S. aureus (25 ± 0.01 μg/ml), H. pylori (29 ± 0.05 μg/ml), B. subtilis (31 ± 0.03 μg/ml), E. faecalis (33 ± 0.01 μg/ml), C. albicans (38 ± 0.03 μg/ml) when compared to amoxycillin (S. aureus 56 ± 0.05 μg/ml; B. subtilis 27 ± 0.04 μg/ml, E. faecalis 22 ± 0.01 μg/ml), streptomycin (H. pylori 38 ± 0.02 μg/ml) and fluconazole (C. albicans 56 ± 0.01 μg/ml). Methanolic extract of C. camphora stem wood demonstrated maximum antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, H. pylori, B. subtilis, E. faecalis and C. albicans. The essential oil of C. altissimum stem bark displayed significant lowest MIC against S. aureus (21 ± 0.03 μg/ml), E. coli (22 ± 0.03 μg/ml), E. cloacae (37 ± 0.06 μg/ml), L. monocytogenes (47 ± 0.08 μg/ml), and P. chrysogenum (101 ± 0.07 μg/ml) when compared to amoxycillin (E. coli 18 ± 0.01 μg/ml, E. cloacae 21 ± 0.05 μg/ml, L. monocytogenes 31 ± 0.03 μg/ml), and fluconazole (P. chrysogenum 101 ± 0.07 μg/ml). The essential oil of C. altissimum stem bark displayed maximum antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, E. cloacae, L. monocytogenes, and P. chrysogenum. Cinnamomum essential oils may be used as an alternative source of antibacterial and antifungal compounds in the treatment of various types of infections.  相似文献

Essential oils from different plant parts are known for their antimicrobial activity but the antifungal effects of essential oil from Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck epicarp on growth and morphogenesis of Aspergillus niger has not been observed so far. The mycelial growth was inhibited at 2.5 and 3.0 μg/ml of oil in Potato Dextrose Broth and Agar medium, respectively. These concentrations were fungicidal under the test conditions. The fungitoxicity of oil did not change even at exposure to 100 °C and autoclaving. The main changes observed under light and scanning electron microscopy after oil treatment were loss of cytoplasm in fungal hyphae, and budding of hyphal tip. The hyphal wall and its diameter became markedly thinner, distorted and resulted in cell wall disruption. The flattened and empty hyphal tips bifurcated into bud like structures. GC-MS studies of the oil revealed the presence of 10 chemical constituents. Limonene has been found to be major component (84.2%).  相似文献

The essential oil composition of 68 individual plants of Juniperus phoenicea from Portugal was investigated by GC, GC-MS and 13C NMR. -Pinene, β-phellandrene, -terpinyl acetate and myrcene were found to be the main constituents. Botanical and chemical data as well as phytogeographical distribution indicate J. phoenicea var. turbinata as the unique subspecies occurring in Portugal. Nevertheless, this taxon exhibits chemical polymorphism. The results of the oil compositions were processed by hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis allowing to establish three groups of essential oils differentiated by the content of -pinene, β-phellandrene and -terpinyl acetate.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the chemical composition of asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida) essential oil (FAEO) and Shirazi thyme (Zataria multiflora) EO (ZMEO) and their impact on vase life of gerbera cut flowers (Gerbera jamesonii cv. Rosalyn). Five concentrations of both, ZMEO and FAEO including 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg L?1 used as continuous vase solution for gerbera cut flowers. EOs used in this study were extracted by hydrodistillation method using Clevenger apparatus. They were analyzed by GC and GC–MS for determination of the active compounds. Thirty five compounds were identified in ZMEO, mainly including thymol (40.1%), p-cymene (15.5%) and carvacrol (6.5%). Also, thirty compounds were identified in FAEO. The main components were trans propenyl sec-butyl disulfide (21.7%), eudesmol (10-epu-γ) (19.2%) and cis propenyl sec-butyl disulfide (10.2%). The results showed that both ZMEO and FAEO at all concentrations could act as an effective antibacterial compounds and this property increased by increasing their concentration. The results of this research showed that ZMEO increased the vase life at all concentrations but high concentrations of FAEO increased mortality percentage and reduced the vase life of cut flowers. The relative fresh weight and vase solution uptake of gerbera cut flowers increased by the applied EOs treatments. ZMEO at 400 mg L? 1 and FAEO at 300 and 400 mg L? 1 resulted the least stem color change. Overall, 200 mg L? 1 ZMEO and 100 mg L? 1 FAEO were the best treatments for maintenance of gerbera cut flowers quality during vase life.  相似文献
