Analyses of stable isotopes and trace elements in feathers may provide important information about location and habitat use during molt, thereby enabling the investigation of migratory connectivity and its ecological consequences in bird species that breed and winter in different areas. We have compared the conclusions arrived at based on the use of these two methods on the same samples of feathers from two migratory birds, the Sand Martin Riparia riparia and the Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica. We investigated the effects of location, age and sex on stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N, δD) and trace element profiles (As, Cd, Mg, Mn, Mo, Se, Sr, Co, Fe, Zn, Li, P, Ti, V, Ag, Cr, Ba, Hg, Pb, S, Ni and Cu). The feathers of adults at the breeding grounds were removed, forcing in birds to grow new feathers at the breeding grounds; this enabled a comparison of composition of feathers grown in Europe and Africa by the same individual. Stable isotope and trace element profiles varied geographically, even at micro-geographic scales, and also among age classes. The results of both methods suggest that food composition and/or source differs between adults and nestlings in the breeding area and that food and/or molting location changes with the age of individuals in Africa. In an attempt to determine the usefulness of data obtained from composition of feathers, we performed discriminant function analyses on information obtained on stable isotopes and trace elements in order to assess the correctness of the classification of group membership. When feathers molted in Africa were compared to those molted in Europe, trace element profiles of the 22 elements generally had a much greater resolution than the stable isotope profiles based on three stable isotopes. The proportion of correctly classified samples was also greater for analyses based on trace elements than for those based on stable isotopes.  相似文献

To understand the ecology of migratory animals it is important to link geographic regions used by individuals including breeding, wintering, and intermediate stopover sites. Previous conventional approaches used to track animal movements have relied on extrinsic markers and typically the subsequent recovery of individuals. This approach has generally been inappropriate for most small, or non-game animals. The use of intrinsic markers such as fatty acid profiles, molecular DNA analyses, and the measurement of naturally occurring stable isotopes in animal tissues offer alternative approaches. This paper reviews the use of stable isotope analyses (primarily δ13C, δ15N, δ34S, δD, δ87Sr) to trace nutritional origin and migration in animals. This approach relies on the fact that foodweb isotopic signatures are reflected in the tissues of organisms and that such signatures can vary spatially based on a variety of biogeochemical processes. Organisms moving between isotopically distinct foodwebs can carry with them information on the location of previous feeding. Such an approach has been used to track animal use of inshore versus offshore, marine versus freshwater, terrestrial C3 versus marine, terrestrial mesic versus xeric, and C3 versus C4 or Crassulacean acid metabolism foodwebs. More recently, the use of stable hydrogen isotope analyses (δD) to link organisms to broad geographic origin in North America is based on large-scale isotopic contours of growing-season average δD values in precipitation. This technique, especially when combined with the assay of other stable isotopes, will be extremely useful in helping to track migration and movement of a wide range of animals from insects to birds and mammals. Future research to refine our understanding of natural and anthropogenic-induced isotopic gradients in nature, and to explore the use of stable isotopes of other elements, is recommended. Summary Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in autotrophs, aquatic invertebrates and fishes from the Orinoco River floodplain of Venezuela reveal that microalgae, including both phytoplankton and epiphytic (attached) forms, are predominant energy sources for many aquatic animals, even though aquatic vascular plants are much more abundant. Floating mats of the grass Paspalum repens and the water hyacinth Eichhornia spp. harbor particularly high densities of aquatic animals, but isotopic evidence indicates that few species are dependent on organic carbon originating from these plants. The stable isotopic evidence for the trophic importance of algae contradicts traditional interpretations of food webs in freshwater wetlands, which are generally thought to be based largely on detritus originating from vascular plants.  相似文献

Geographic origins of populations and migration patterns of several vertebrate and invertebrate species have been inferred from geographically distinct isotopes in their tissues. To test the hypothesis that feathers grown on different continents would reflect continental differences of δD in precipitation and have significantly different stable isotope ratios, we analyzed stable isotopes in two generations of feathers from three bird species (American and Pacific golden-plovers, Pluvialis dominica and P. fulva, and northern wheatears Oenanthe oenanthe) that breed in North America and winter in South America, the South Pacific and Asia, and Africa. We found significant differences in stable isotope signatures between summer- and winter-grown feathers in the plovers, and our use of two generations of feathers provided similar variation to that reported in studies using larger sample sizes. In contrast to plovers, no differences were detected in isotope values between summer- and winter-grown feathers in wheatears. Discriminant analyses separated 80% of summer- and winter-grown feathers for each plover species. Nonetheless, an “assignment with exclusion” method adapted from population genetics to impart a measure of confidence in assigning individuals to groups of origin resulted in an overall accuracy among plovers of only 41%, compared with a 63% assignment accuracy when the exclusion criterion was removed. Thus, we were unable to accurately assign feathers to origin of growth on the continental scale. Moreover, using δD expectations for North America, we were unable to assign summer-grown plover feathers to within better than several thousand kilometers of their true origins. We urge researchers to carefully consider the ecology and physiology of their study organisms, statistical methodology, and the interpretation of results when using stable isotopes to infer the geographic origins of feather growth.  相似文献

Ratios of 13C/12C and 15N/14N were measured in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), marginal vegetation, benthic macrodetritus (diameter > 1 mm) and selected invertebrate consumers in the Gamtoos estuary, South Africa to: (1) trace the provenance of benthic detrital deposits, and (2) determine the extent to which three abundant species of macroinvertebrates utilise this resource. DIC was strongly depleted in 13C with average 13C values (–9.5±0.5) being typical of limnetic waters. Benthic detrital particles (13C–24.1±0.3) originated mainly from marginal vegetation (13C–25.7±0.3), but their slightly elevated carbon ratio suggests additional input from 13C-rich sources-possibly C4 plants cultivated on the floodplain. Populations of the fossorial ghost shrimp Callianassa kraussi, the bentho-pelagic amphipod Grandidierella lignorum and the epifaunal crab Hymenosoma robiculare together account for 96% of total benthic biomass in the upper regions of this estuary. Marked differences in trophic niches were evident among these three consumer species. Ghost shrimp (13C –32.5±0.3) foraged by filter-feeding on fine suspended particulate organic matter (13C–31.2±0.5). Amphipods (13C–28.0±0.6) utilised some benthic detritus but fed mainly on suspended material. Only the relatively rare crabs (13C–23.8±1.5) appeared to utilise benthic detrital particles to any significant extent. In the benthic consumer community of the upper Gamtoos estuary, suspension feeders make up 98% of biomass and thus clearly dominate over deposit feeders. This can be traced to the low contribution of higher plants (c. 13%) to overall carbon production, and detritus originating from macrophytes is consequently relatively unimportant in supporting invertebrate secondary production in this particular system.  相似文献

Coastal lagoons provide an excellent basis for the study of processes controlling the evolution of a coastal zone. We examine the relative importance of these processes during the middle to late Holocene through a study of an 8.5 meter-long sediment record from the Albufera de Valencia (Spain). We combine sedimentological analyses with investigations into the palaeoecology, taphonomy and geochemistry (Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, δ18O and δ13C) of ostracod valves in order to assess the effects of sea-level changes, storm events and effective moisture on the evolution of a Western Mediterranean coastal wetland. The late Pleistocene sediments represent a subaerial environment, which was followed by a hiatus in deposition. The first Holocene unit (8700–7500 calendar yr. BP) is composed of typical lagoon-barrier and backshore sediments, deposited when seawater intruded into the lake and the climate was arid. The upper part of the sequence (between 7500 and 3400 yr.) is characterized by two sedimentary units, which correspond to Holocene progradation phases and humid climate associated with an increased freshwater influx to the lake accompanied by several high-energy events (palaeostorms). Overall, the record shows that an arid climate prevailed in the western Mediterranean area between 8400 and 7600 yr. The main marine transgression and accompanying progradational phases occurred between 7000 and 3400 yr., which is confirmed by other studies of coastal evolution along the Mediterranean coast. The multiproxy reconstructions demonstrate that controls on sedimentation and palaeoecology in this Mediterranean coastal lagoon were complex.  相似文献

Wheat and wheat products are more important sources of energy and nutrients in diets of people in many cultures compared to other foods. The daily consumption of wheat is about 200 g/d/person in Western Europe and North America. On the other hand, 400–450 g of wheat and wheat products are consumed daily by average Turkish people. Wheat samples collected from the Iskenderun region in 1995 and 1996 and Ankara and Istanbul regions in 1995 were analyzed for their trace element content by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). In addition, 13 soil samples were collected from the Iskenderun region in 1996. Total soil samples were analyzed by INAA and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), EDTA-extractable elements by INAA, and DTPA-extractable elements by AAS. Correlation analysis and enrichment factor calculations were applied to the trace element results. In wheat samples, a strong correlation was found between the elements such as Sc, La, Sm, Rb, and K whose main source is soil. The concentration of Se appeared to show larger variations among different regions. No significant correlation was observed for elements such as As and Se whose main sources in the atmosphere are anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

Measurements of trace element concentrations within bones in nasal cavity and labyrinth have shown large variations, both with a single bone and between different bones of a same individual. Factors that influence trace element levels include: metabolic activity, environmental effects, sex, and age. Detection of characteristic X-rays has been shown to be a convenient method for the measurement of concentration profiles, micropixe for micrometer variations, and X-ray centration profiles, micropixe for micrometer variations, and X-ray fluorescence for millimeter variations.  相似文献

目的观察微量元素铬对糖尿病大鼠糖脂代谢的影响。方法选糖尿病大鼠经灌胃给予有机铬水溶液治疗12周后,分别观察口服有机铬200μg/d及400μg/d的糖尿病大鼠空腹血糖及血脂水平(血清总胆固醇、甘油三酯、低密度脂蛋白和高密度脂蛋白)。实验分为4组:1组为正常对照组;2组为铬200μg/d组;3组为铬400μg/d组;4组为糖尿病对照组。结果有机铬具有明显降低血糖、血清总胆固醇、低密度脂蛋白和甘油三酯及升高高密度脂蛋白的作用(P0.05~P0.01)。结论有机铬能明显改善糖尿病大鼠的糖脂代谢。  相似文献

In this study, the Strontium/Calcium (Sr/Ca) ratio, and the carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of coccoliths are investigated in three different grain-size fractions (<20 μm, 15-5 μm, <5 μm) of 17 surface sediment samples from the Equatorial and South Atlantic. The results are compared to environmental parameters in order to assess the factors controlling the observed coccolith geochemical patterns. Isotopic and geochemical composition of coccolith species in surface sediment samples from the South Atlantic greatly varies according to the different grain-size fractions. However, even if the absolute values show a great offset, the general trends are comparable. The δ18O values show a decreasing trend with increasing temperature. The δ13C and Sr/Ca ratio are mainly influenced by productivity of coccolithophores, which is in turn controlled by different factors, such as temperature, nutrient supply and productivity of other phytoplankton groups. Dilution and dissolution are negligible factors in these open marine samples. Therefore, coccolith abundance in bulk sediment is the best approximation for productivity of coccolithophores. The various coccolith species fractionate Sr differently, as is best shown by the 5-15 μm fraction where three species (Calcidiscus leptoporus, Helicosphaera carteri and Coccolithus pelagicus) predominantly occur.  相似文献

The effect of dexamethasone (Dxm) on trace elements and serum protein patterns was investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to brain trauma. After 6-or 24 h of the traumatic incident, the level of serum copper was significantly higher in the Dxm-treated rats, compared to controls (p<0.05). The corresponding levels of zinc and iron did not show significant differences. The zinc level returned to normal 24 h after trauma. After 6 and 24 h of trauma, the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel patterns of serum proteins showed that a 41.6-kDa protein was significantly increased in the Dxm-treated animals. Two proteins weighing 26.6 kDa and 55.1 kDa did not show Dxm-induced changes. These results suggest that increases in the copper-zinc ratio and the changes of the 26.6-kDa, 41.6-kDa, and 55.1-kDa proteins might be a useful prognostic indicator for severe traumatic brain injury.  相似文献

The Sava River and its tributaries in Slovenia represent waters strongly influenced by chemical weathering of limestone and dolomite. The carbon isotopic compositions of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and suspended organic carbon (POC) fractions as well as major solute concentrations yielded insights into the origin and fluxes of carbon in the upper Sava River system. The major solute composition was dominated by carbonic acid dissolution of calcite and dolomite. Waters were generally supersaturated with respect to calcite, and dissolved CO2 was about fivefold supersaturated relative to the atmosphere. The δ13C of DIC ranged from −13.5 to −3.3‰. Mass balances for riverine inorganic carbon suggest that carbonate dissolution contributes up to 26%, degradation of organic matter ∼17% and exchange with atmospheric CO2 up to 5%. The concentration and stable isotope diffusion models indicated that atmospheric exchange of CO2 predominates in streams draining impermeable shales and clays while in the carbonate-dominated watersheds dissolution of the Mesozoic carbonates predominates.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were used to examine variation in ant use of plant resources in the Cecropia obtusifolia / Azteca spp. association in Costa Rica. Tissue of ants, host plants and symbiotic pseudococcids were collected along three elevation transects on the Pacific slope of Costa Ricas Cordillera Central, and were analyzed for carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition. Worker carbon and nitrogen signatures were found to vary with elevation and ant colony size, and between Azteca species groups. Ants in the A. constructor species group appear to be opportunistic foragers at low elevations, but rely more heavily on their host plants at high elevations, whereas ants in the A. alfari species group consume a more consistent diet across their distribution. Further, isotope values indicate that both ant species groups acquire more nitrogen from higher trophic levels at low elevation and when ant colonies are small. Provisioning by the host is a substantial ecological cost to the interaction, and it may vary, even in a highly specialized association. Nonetheless, not all specialized interactions are equivalent; where interaction with one ant species group appears conditional upon the environment, the other is not. Differential host use within the Cecropia-Azteca association suggests that the ecological and evolutionary benefits and costs of association may vary among species pairs.  相似文献

Middle Miocene (14.8–11.9 Ma) deep-sea sediments from ODP Hole 747A (Kerguelen Plateau, southern Indian Ocean) contain abundant, well-preserved and diverse planktonic foraminiferal assemblages. A detailed study of the climatic and hydrographic changes that occurred in this region during the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition led to the identification of an intense cooling phase (the Middle Miocene Shift). Abundance fluctuations of planktonic foraminiferal species with different paleoclimatic affinities, and oxygen and carbon stable isotopes have been integrated in a multi-proxy approach. Reconstruction of changes in foraminiferal faunal composition and diversity through time were the basis for identification of three foraminiferal biofacies. The most prominent faunal change took place at 13.8 Ma, when a fauna with warm-water affinity (marked by high abundance of Globorotalia miozea group and Globoturborotalita woodi plexus) was replaced by an oligotypic, opportunistic fauna with typical polar characters and dominated by neogloboquadrinids. This faunal change is interpreted as the result of foraminiferal migration from adjacent bioprovinces, caused by modifications in climate and hydrography. A positive 2.0‰ shift in δ18O (interpreted as the Mi3 event) and a related positive 1.0‰ shift in δ13C (corresponding to the CM6 event) accompanied this faunal turnover. These are interpreted to reflect substantial reorganization of Southern Ocean waters, the northward migration of the Polar Front and a strong increase in primary productivity. The second faunal change took place at 12.9 Ma and was characterized by the gradual decrease in abundance of the neogloboquadrinids and the recovery of Globorotalia praescitula/scitula group and Globigerinita glutinata. A positive 1.5‰ shift in δ18O (interpreted as the Mi4 event) and a concurrent gradual negative shift in δ13C accompanied this faunal change, witnessing further modifications of the climate/ocean system. Variations in sea surface temperature, considered as the main factor causing changes of surface hydrography at the Kerguelen Plateau, seem to have been driven by obliquity and long-term eccentricity, thus suggesting a key role played by the astronomical forcing on the evolution of Southern Ocean dynamics during the Middle Miocene. Also an evident 1.2 Myr modulation of the δ13C record suggests a main control of the long-term obliquity cycles on the carbon cycle dynamics. Particularly, the Mi3/CM6 events exactly fit with a node of the 1.2 Myr modulation cycles. This confirms the key role played by orbital parameters on high-latitude temperatures and Antarctic ice volume, and indirectly on global carbon burial and/or productivity. This climatic transition was marked also by changes in surface hydrography. From 14.8 to 13.8 Ma an intermediate-strength thermocline controlled by seasonality developed just below the photic zone. Weaker seasonality characterized the interval from 13.8 to 12.9 Ma, when the thermocline became shallower and sharper and favored intermediate-water foraminifers. From 12.9 Ma, seasonality increased again and an intermediate-strength thermocline re-developed.  相似文献

The trace elements Ag, As, Au, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Ce, Co, Cs, Cu, Ga, Hf, Hg, In, La, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Pd, Rb, Rh, Ru, Sb, Se, Sn, Sr, Te, Th, Tl, U, V, W, Y and Zr were determined in 130 human blood samples from occupationally non-exposed volunteers living in the greater area of Bremen in northern Germany. The blood samples were collected in lithium heparin monovettes developed for trace metal determination and were analysed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) with an octopole-based collision/reaction cell. For sample introduction into the ICP, the blood samples were diluted 1/10 (V/V) with a 0.1% Triton-X-100 and 0.5% (V/V) ammonia solution. The method validation of our developed routine method is described for all 37 elements and results about internal and external quality assurance are discussed. Information on exposure conditions of all human subjects were collected by questionnaire-based interviews, including smoking habits, seafood consumption and the type of dental alloys in the teeth. Mean values, geometric mean values, ranges and selected percentiles of all elemental concentrations in human blood are presented, which helps toxicologists and clinical chemists planning research about exposition to metals and health effects caused by exposition to metals.  相似文献

This study first indicates that the serum trace element Zn tends to decrease in the course of sequential thoracenteses. Other selected essential elements such as copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and cobalt (Co) do not reveal loss changes in their serum levels. Therefore, Zn should be monitored in patients who undergo repeated thoracentesis. To measure the magnitude of changes in serum trace elements and the clinical relevance of potential imbalances, concentrations of the essential elements are analyzed in 57 serum/effusion pairs obtained from 5 patients (4 male, 1 female; age 28–78 yr) who underwent repeated thoracenteses as a result of recurrent pleural effusion. All patients declined other therapeutic options such as chemical pleurodesis and /or chest tube placement. The total volumes of fluid removed ranged from 2.3 to 19.3 L and the frequency of thoracentesis ranged from 6 to 15 within a period of 102–174 days. Two patients had benign pleural disease and three had malignancies. Three patients suffered from pleural effusions resulting from exudates (total protein content >3.0 g/dL, LDH >200 U/L), and two resulting from transudates (total protein <3.0 g/dL, LDH <200 U/L). All trace elements were simultaneously determined by inductively coupled argon plasma-mass spectrometry. In addition, the concentrations of the following clinically relevant parameters were analyzed by standard methods: total protein, pH, leukocyte count, lactate dehydrogenase, and glucose.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and piggery wastewater, and to identify the key factors governing the co-digestion performance. The analytical results indicated that the food waste contained higher energy potential and lower concentrations of trace elements than the piggery wastewater. Anaerobic co-digestion showed a significantly improved biogas productivity and process stability. The results of co-digestion of the food waste with the different fractions of the piggery wastewater suggested that trace element might be the reason for enhancing the co-digestion performance. By supplementing the trace elements, a long-term anaerobic digestion of the food waste only resulted in a high methane yield of 0.396 m3/kg VSadded and 75.6% of VS destruction with no significant volatile fatty acid accumulation. These results suggested that the typical Korean food waste was deficient with some trace elements required for anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

Stable isotope analysis of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in animal tissues is an important approach to investigate the tropic status and habitat of marine species. Some biases due to lipid extractions and preservation can hinder the interpretation of results, yet their effects have not been investigated in squid. In this study, we evaluated the effects of lipid extraction and preservatives (dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), 70% ethanol, and 10% buffered formaldehyde) on the δ13C, δ15N and C:N ratios in squid muscle. Beaks were placed under the same treatments with the exception of DMSO. Muscle and beak samples remained under treatment for 375 days and 416 days, respectively. Our results indicate that lipid extractions increased the mean values of unpreserved samples by 0.8‰ for δ13C and by 0.68‰ for δ15N. Preservatives also affected the isotopic composition in muscle at different magnitudes. DMSO remarkably reduced and increased the variability for δ13C and δ15N values among samples, formalin mainly reduced δ13C values by 1.5‰, whereas ethanol increased both δ13C and δ15N by ≤ 0.8‰. Lipid extractions eliminated the effect of DMSO and ethanol for δ13C and δ15N, and formalin only for δ15N. In beak, negligible shifts in δ13C, δ15N and C:N ratios were recorded after preservation in ethanol and formalin. Although lipid extractions can be recommended to reduce the effect of preservation, further research is needed to develop correction models for isotopic shifts associated with both lipid extractions in unpreserved and preserved muscle tissues. Lipid extractions per se could introduce a bias that may have important implications for ecological studies.  相似文献

The overall dependence of benthic secondary production on the main primary producers at three different habitats in the Nakdong River estuarine system, Korea, was estimated. Inventories of macrobenthic invertebrate biomass were combined with multiple-isotope-mixing models to evaluate the trophic base, comparing Scirpus triqueter-dominated and Phragmites australis-dominated marshes and bare intertidal flat. The feasible contributions of four main food sources, marsh macrophytes, the microphytobenthos, and riverine and marine suspended particulate organic matter (RPOM and MPOM), to the consumer biomasses were calculated using the isotopic mixing model. After weighting the feasible contributions of food sources to each taxon by the consumer biomass, the resultant values were summed for all the consumers at each habitat to quantify the trophic base of the benthic invertebrate community. Dual-isotope-mixing model calculations verified the varying dependence on those potential food sources among the functional feeding groups. In addition, the dependence on each source of the same functional group varied between bare intertidal and salt-marsh habitats, shifting from a dominance of benthic and pelagic microalgal sources on the former habitat to a mixed food source at the latter habitat. The biomasses of the species comprising each functional group differed among habitats and sampling dates, so that each functional group made a different contribution to the whole benthic community and its basal food source. Given the calculation of the overall dependence of macrozoobenthic community on each food source, our results indicate that the microphytobenthic source dominates (nearly half) the trophic base in all the intertidal habitats of different vegetational compositions. Marsh-macrophyte-derived organic matter and RPOM served as considerable subsidies only to salt-marsh food webs, reflecting the use of the mixed food source by salt-marsh-bed consumers. Conversely, the dominance of MPOM in the total food base was equal to that of the microphytobenthos in the bare intertidal ecosystem but increased during spring−summer in the salt-marsh systems. Our results also suggest that the river discharge concentrated during the summer monsoon does not lead to any shift in trophic base for estuarine secondary production.  相似文献

Metabolic resources in adults of holometabolous insects may derive either from larval or adult feeding. In Drosophila melanogaster, reproduction and lifespan are differently affected by larval vs. adult resource availability, and it is unknown how larval vs. adult acquired nutrients are differentially allocated to somatic and reproductive function. Here we describe the allocation of carbon derived from dietary sugar in aging female D. melanogaster. Larval and adult flies were fed diets contrasting in sucrose (13)C/(12)C, from which we determined the extent to which carbon acquired at each stage contributed to adult somatic tissue and to egg manufacture. Dietary sugar is very important in egg provisioning; at every age, roughly one half of the carbon in eggs was derived from sugar, which turned over from predominantly larval to entirely adult dietary sources. Sucrose provided approximately 40% of total somatic carbon, of which adult dietary sucrose came to supply approximately 75%. Unlike in eggs, however, adult acquired sucrose did not entirely replace the somatic carbon from larvally acquired sucrose. Because carbon from larval sucrose appears to be fairly "replaceable", larval sucrose cannot be a limiting substrate in resource allocation between reproduction and lifespan.  相似文献
