This research evaluated the potential of gibberellins (GA), and Prohexadione-Ca (PCa) to affect sweet cherry (Prunus avium) fruit size and quality. The results demonstrate the ability of ostensibly counter-acting plant growth regulators to significantly improve sweet cherry cv ‘Bing’ fruit size, fruit quality and postharvest characteristics compared to the current commercial application of GA3 alone. In 2008, we found that the combination of GA3 or GA4/7 (30 mg l−1) with PCa (150 mg l−1) applied to entire 3-year-old limbs 30 days after anthesis increased fruit size and improved fruit quality in ‘Bing’. In 2009, we investigated the effect of application timing in larger-scale field trials, comparing treatments made at 30 or 37 days after anthesis, on fruit quality, storability and sensory attributes after storage. Treatment with PCa + GA3 or PCa + GA4/7 delayed fruit maturity by about 7 days compared to the untreated control. Both the first and second applications of PCa + GA4/7 resulted in 35–40% fruit being ≥10 g, compared with only 20% in the control. PCa + GA3 treatment also showed greater potential for improving fruit storability by maintaining fruit firmness, sweetness, and consumer appeal than PCa + GA4/7. PCa alone or in combination with GAs inhibited current shoot growth and delayed fruit coloring development. After 30 days of 4°C storage, fewer than 5% fruit from untreated trees were rated as healthy and marketable, compared to 50 and 30% fruit from PCa + GA3 treatment applied at 30 or 37 days after anthesis, respectively. In conclusion, preharvest foliar application of PCa + GA3 at the onset of Stage II of fruit development shows potential to affect canopy source-sink relations and improved quality and shelf life of ‘Bing’ sweet cherries.  相似文献

A comparison of the effects of foliar and soil N application was made in field-grown mature fruiting Gala/M9 apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh) in 2001 and 2002 growing seasons under Pacific Northwest growing conditions in southern British Columbia, Canada. The trees, six years old at the start of the experiment, were treated: (1) with 5 g/l urea sprays supplied every two weeks (7 times) from mid May to mid August (total about 50 g N/tree/year), (2) with the same amount of N applied to the soil with the same timing and quantity as for the foliar treatment, and (3) with no N (control). Leaf color (as SPAD readings) and N concentrations (mg/g), and soil NH4+-N and NO3-N were measured periodically throughout the two seasons. Leached NO3-N was monitored monthly via an anion exchange probe from June to October in 2001 and from May to November in 2002. Shoot length was measured in October and N concentration of one-year-old wood and roots was determined in December of each growing s eason. Soil N application significantly increased shoot length relative to control or foliar N application. Leaf color, leaf N, and N concentration of one-year-old wood and roots were similarly increased relative to control by both soil and foliar N application. These treatments also increased fruit yield relative to control. There was no significant difference in yield and fruit quality between soil and foliar N applications. Soil N application increased soil NH4+-N and NO3-N content in the root zone, and also increased the NO3 leaching loss below the root zone especially late in the growing season. Our results suggested that tree N status and yield and fruit quality could be maintained by multiple urea sprays during the growing season in apple orchards, and foliar N application will reduce the risk of soil NO3-N leaching.  相似文献

Blackberry mutants were induced by the irradiation of blackberry shoots with 5 kilo radians of cobalt (60Co) gamma irradiation. Seven mutant plants demonstrating improved plant growth properties were selected for evaluation of the fruit quality characteristics, such as size, shape, color, firmness, soluble solids content, juice acidity, nutritive value (e.g. ascorbic acid) and overall fruit flavor. The organoleptic properties, including texture, firmness, flavor, sweetness, acidity, color, and overall fruit flavor, were evaluated by a consumer panel. The results indicated that irradiation induced changes in some of the quality parameters of blackberry fruits, as well as increased the fruit shelf-life.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine the response of pear (Pyrus communis L.) trees to soil and foliar applications of boron (B). The experiment was carried out during 2000–2001 in a commercial orchard in Central Poland on mature `Conference' pear trees grafted on Pyrus communis var. caucasica seedlings planted at a spacing of 4 × 2.5 m on a sandy loam soil with a low hot water-extractable B status. Annually, foliar sprays with B were applied. (i) before full bloom (at green and white bud stage, and when 1–5% of flowers was at full bloom), (ii) after flowering (at petal fall, and 7 and 14 days after the end of flowering), or (iii) postharvest in fall (approximately 6 weeks before leaf fall). Spray treatments involved application of B at a rate of 0.2 kg ha–1 in spring or 0.8 kg ha–1 in fall. Additionally, other trees were supplied with soil-applied B at the bud break stage at a rate of 2 kg ha–1. Trees untreated with B served as the control. The results revealed that foliar applications of B before full bloom or after harvest increased fruit set and fruit yield. Tree vigor, mean fruit weight, firmness, soluble solids concentration and titratable acidity of fruits at harvest were not affected by B treatments. Foliar B sprays before full bloom or after harvest increased B concentrations in flowers, and both leaves and fruitlets at 40 days after flowering. Only the foliar treatments after flowering and soil fertilization with B increased the content of this microelement in fruit and leaves at 80 and 120 days after full bloom. Foliar B application before full bloom or after harvest increased calcium (Ca) in fruitlets at 40 days after full bloom, in fruit, and in leaves at 80 and 120 days after full bloom. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg) in plant tissues were not affected by B fertilization. After storage, and also after the ripening period, fruits from the trees sprayed with B before full bloom or after harvest had higher firmness and titratable acidity than those from the control trees. After the ripening period, fruits from the trees sprayed with B before full bloom or after harvest had lower membrane permeability and were less sensitive to internal browning than the control fruits. These findings indicate that prebloom and postharvest B sprays are successful in increasing pear tree yielding and in improving fruit storability under the conditions of low B availability in the soil.  相似文献

Non-destructive methods have been widely recognized for evaluating fruit quality traits of many horticultural crops and food processing industry. Destructive (analytical) test, and non-destructive evaluation of the quality traits were investigated and compared for ‘Red Rose’ tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruit grown under protected environment. Fresh tomato fruit at five distinctive maturity stages namely; breaker (BK), turning (TG), pink (PK), light-red (LR), and red (RD) were labeled and scanned using the handheld near infra-red (NIR) enhanced spectrometer at a wavelength range of 285–1200 nm. The labeled tomato samples were then measured analytically for flesh firmness, lycopene, β-carotene, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoids content (TFC). The results revealed that quality traits could be estimated using NIR spectroscopy with a relatively high coefficient of determination (R2): 0.834 for total phenolic content, 0.864 for lycopene, 0.790 for total flavonoid content, 0.708 for β-carotene; and 0.679 for flesh firmness. The accumulation of Lyco and β-Car rapidly increased in tomatoes harvested between the TG and the LR maturity stages. Harvesting tomatoes at BK maturity stage resulted in significantly higher flesh firmness than harvesting at the later maturity stages. Tomato fruits had the lowest TPC and TFC contents at the earliest maturity stage (BK), while they had intermediate TPC and TFC levels at LR and RD maturity stages. NIR spectroscopic measurements of fruit firmness and lipophilic antioxidants in tomato fruit at various maturity stages were partially in accordance with those estimated by destructive (analytical) methods. Based on these findings, we recommend using non-destructive NIR spectroscopy as an effective tool for predicting tomato fruit quality during harvest stage and postharvest processing.  相似文献

Soil nitrogen (N) supply and uptake by regenerating trees is an important ecosystem attribute but difficult to quantify in partial-cut forests where light availability varies. The foliar attributes of N concentration (N%) and N per unit area (Na) may help characterize the influence of soil nutrition, but ideally the relationship between soils and foliage would be tested separately by species across well-defined light gradients. To do this, we examined foliar attributes of four tree species across gradients of light availability in 12 year-old partially-cut forests in northwest British Columbia, Canada. There were no differences in forest floor or mineral soil N mineralization rates across the light gradients, and for western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and hybrid white spruce (Picea glauca x sitchensis), this consistent level of soil N supply corresponded with unchanging foliar N%. In contrast, foliar N% of Betula papyrifera (paper birch) and Thuja plicata (western redcedar) declined with shading, perhaps due to shifts in root-shoot biomass allocation for B. papyrifera, and climatic constraints on shade tolerance for T. plicata. Leaf δ13C approached an asymptote at approx. 40% full light for the coniferous species, but increased linearly with light for B. papyrifera. Foliar Na was linearly correlated with leaf δ13C for three species, reflecting the dual effect of light and nutrition on photosynthesis processes, and suggesting that foliar Na may be a simple parameter to integrate both resource constraints on regenerating saplings. These results demonstrate both support for and limits to foliar attributes among species in isolating soil N effects against light constraints in partial-cut forests.  相似文献

Fruit drop is a key issue with date palm cultivars that can be addressed with a variety of methods and strategies. Foliar application of macronutrients can be more effective in inhibiting fruit drop and improving the quality of date fruits. The current study was carried out to investigate the possible role of potassium (K) and urea to reduce fruit drop and improve the fruit quality of “Dhakki” date palm. It was conducted in a complete randomised block design with seven treatments and three replications at Pakistan's Agricultural Research Institute, Dera Ismail Khan. The treatments used were: (i) Control (distilled water spray); (ii) Potassium sulphate (K2SO4) at 1 %; (iii) K2SO4 at 1 % + Urea at 2 %; (iv) K2SO4 at 2 %; (v) K2SO4 at 2 % + Urea at 2 %; (vi) K2SO4 at 3 % and; (vii) K2SO4 at 3 % + Urea at 2 %. All the concentrations were sprayed at Kimri stage of fruit development during two consecutive growing seasons. Twenty-one date palms of equal size and age were chosen for the assessments to measure percent fruit drop and other physicochemical variables, including fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight, pulp percentage, yield/bundle, pH, total soluble solids (TSS), K content in fruit, and all sugars (percent) of harvested date fruit. The results revealed that bunch spray of K significantly affected all the parameters during both seasons. Application of K2SO4 alone and in combination with urea not only effectively reduced the fruit drop but also improved fruit quality in date where, K2SO4 applied at 2 % combined with urea was the best concentration in reducing fruit drop, enhancing other physicochemical attributes, and improving fruit quality of “Dhakki” date palm. This study may effectively contribute to reduce the fruit drop and enhance the fruit quality by using K and urea, enabling farmers to improve the date yield and increase economic growth.  相似文献

The organoleptic quality of tomato fruit involves a set of attributes (flavour, aroma, texture) that can be evaluated either by sensory analyses or by instrumental measures. In order to study the genetic control of this characteristic, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population was developed from an intraspecific cross between a cherry tomato line with a good overall aroma intensity and an inbred line with medium flavour but bigger fruits. A total of 38 traits involved in organoleptic quality were evaluated. Physical traits included fruit weight, diameter, colour, firmness, and elasticity. Chemical traits were dry matter weight, titratable acidity, pH, and the contents of soluble solids, sugars, lycopene, carotene, and 12 aroma volatiles. A panel of trained assessors quantified sensory attributes: flavour (sweetness and sourness), aroma (overall aroma intensity, together with candy, lemon, citrus fruit, and pharmaceutical aromas) and texture (firmness, meltiness, mealiness, juiciness, and skin difficult to swallow). RILs showed a large range of variation. Molecular markers were used to map a total of 130 quantitative trait loci (QTL) for the 38 traits. They were mainly distributed in a few chromosome regions. Major QTLs (R(2) >30%) were detected for fruit weight, diameter, colour, firmness, meltiness, and for six aroma volatiles. The relationships between instrumental measures and sensory traits were analysed with regard to the QTL map. A special insight was provided about the few regions where QTLs are related to multiple traits. A few examples are shown to illustrate how the simultaneous analysis of QTL segregation for related traits may aid in understanding the genetic control of quality traits and pave the way towards QTL characterization.  相似文献

Fruit bagging has been widely used in the fruit production industry; however, in apples, it is known to cause a significant decrease in fruit sugar contents. To address this issue and identify the changes in leaf mineral contents associated with fruit sugar levels in bagged apples, aqueous solutions of 10 g L?1 CaCl2, 5 g L?1 KH2PO4, or 2 g L?1 Na2B4O7·10H2O were foliar sprayed during four fruit developmental stages. The late-season leaf phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents after the rapid fruit growth period and the soluble sugar contents in ripening fruit were significantly lower in bagged fruit than in non-bagged fruit (11.1–15.09 %). The decreases in leaf P and K contents caused by bagging were almost completely compensated for by foliage applications of CaCl2, KH2PO4, or Na2B4O7 during the fruit set period. Therefore, the fruit soluble sugar contents were significantly higher in bagged ripening fruit with foliar spray than in bagged fruit without foliar sprays, reaching the levels of non-bagged apples. The decrease in the sugar contents of bagged apples was closely associated with the decrease in late-season leaf P and K levels caused by fruit bagging.  相似文献

Yield increases observed among eight genotypes of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) grown at ambient CO2 (about 350) or 1000 microliters per liter CO2 were not due to carbon exchange rate increases. Yield varied among genotypes while carbon exchange rate did not. Yield increases were due to a change in partitioning from root to fruit. Tomatoes grown with CO2 enrichment exhibited nonepinastic foliar deformation similar to nutrient deficiency symptoms. Foliar deformation varied among genotypes, increased throughout the season, and became most severe at elevated CO2. Foliar deformation was positively related to fruit yield. Foliage from the lower canopy was sampled throughout the growing season and analysed for starch, K, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn concentrations. Foliar K and Mn concentrations were the only elements correlated with deformation severity. Foliar K decreased while deformation increased. In another study, foliage of half the plants of one genotype received foliar applications of 7 millimolar KH2PO4. Untreated foliage showed significantly greater deformation than treated foliage. Reduced foliar K concentration may cause CO2-enhanced foliar deformation. Reduced K may occur following decreased nutrient uptake resulting from reduced root mass due to the change in partitioning from root to fruit.  相似文献

A series of eight experiments was conducted using large pots to (1) find the most effective date, site, concentration of K-solution and K-salt for foliar K-fertilization of maize plants (Zea mays, L.) grown with sufficient K-supply in soil, (2) explain why maize responded to the K-treatment, and (3) examine the influence of various levels of N and P supplies on the effectiveness of K-fertilizer via the leaves. A single spraying on sweet maize and field maize on any day between 50% tasselling date to 10 days after tasselling shortened maturity date, increased grain yield, stover yield, grain-stover ratio, absorption of N, P, K, Ca and Mg, sweetness of young grain (of sweet maize), and crude protein content of grain. However spraying on the third day after 50% tasselling was most effective. The second application later than 7 days after the 50% tasselling date suppressed the effects of spraying on the most effective date. In application of many repetitive sprayings covering the most effective date, a spraying program with late spraying could reduce grain yield. KNO3, 2.5% KNO3-solution, and applications on all aerial parts were found to be the most effective. Increases in grain yield for spraying on all aerial parts, spraying on ear leaf only, spraying on all leaves above ear leaf and applying K to soil were 74%, 51%, 41% and 23%, respectively. The foliar K-fertilization affected maize by stimulating chlorophyll synthesis and not by increasing leaf area. A balance in N and K supplies was determined to be effective for the K-fertilization.  相似文献

As potassium (K) requirement of grapevine (Vitis viniferaL.) berries is high and phloem translocation from mature leaves to developing organs is well established, it was posited that shoot trimming, a widely applied technique which alters the source-sink balance and the mature-to-immature foliage ratio of a canopy, may influence K deficiency. Six-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon grapevines were grown in 0.045 m3 pots (one plant per pot) filled with a soil sampled from a vineyard previously displaying K deficiency symptoms. Two levels of K supply (K0, no K added; K1, 25 g K per pot added in five splits from bloom to post veraison) were tested on vines that for each level were left (a) untrimmed and trimmed at ten main leaves with (b) or without (c) maintenance of lateral shoots in a split-plot design. Potassium concentration of leaf blades, berries and canes, vegetative growth and leaf gas exchange were recorded throughout the season; yield, grape quality and must characteristics were determined at fruit maturity. While adding potassium to the soil resulted in higher K concentration in blades of both main and lateral shoots and berries at harvest, trimming with removal of lateral shoots resulted in lower blade K concentration of the main leaves at harvest and more severe K deficiency symptoms regardless of K soil availability. Berry K concentration and the fraction of whole-plant K partitioned to clusters were not significantly affected by trimming. Gas-exchange, vegetative growth, yield and grape quality were not affected by the seasonal K fertilization, whereas the latter was impaired when trimming with excision of lateral shoots was applied. The results indicate that if shoot trimming is not followed by an adequate regrowth of secondary shoots an excessive depletion of potassium from the retained old basal leaves occurs during fruit maturity and increases the risk of leaf K deficiency, particularly in the K0 treatment.  相似文献

Seaweed concentrate prepared fromEcklonia maxima (Osbeck) Papenfuss, when applied as a soil drench, significantly improved the growth of tomato seedlings. Application as a foliar spray had no effect on young plants. In a second experiment SWC-treated plants exhibited early fruit ripening and a total fruit fresh weight increase of 17%. The number of harvested fruit were improved by about 10%. In this instance foliar applied SWC was more beneficial than SWC applied to the soil. Background

Zinc (Zn) biofortification through foliar Zn application is an attractive strategy to reduce human Zn deficiency. However, little is known about the biofortification efficiency and bioavailability of rice grain from different forms of foliar Zn fertilizers.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Four different Zn forms were applied as a foliar treatment among three rice cultivars under field trial. Zinc bioavailability was assessed by in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell model. Foliar Zn fertilization was an effective agronomic practice to promote grain Zn concentration and Zn bioavailability among three rice cultivars, especially, in case of Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4. On average, Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 increased Zn concentration in polished rice up to 24.04% and 22.47%, respectively. On average, Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 increased Zn bioavailability in polished rice up to 68.37% and 64.43%, respectively. The effectiveness of foliar applied Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 were higher than Zn-EDTA and Zn-Citrate on improvement of Zn concentration, and reduction of phytic acid, as a results higher accumulation of bioavailable Zn in polished rice. Moreover, foliar Zn application could maintain grain yield, the protein and minerals (Fe and Ca) quality of the polished rice.

Conclusions

Foliar application of Zn in rice offers a practical and useful approach to improve bioavailable Zn in polished rice. According to current study, Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 are recommended as excellent foliar Zn forms to ongoing agronomic biofortification.  相似文献

The zinc (Zn) supply increases the fruit yield of Citrus trees that are grown, especially in the highly weathered soils of the tropics due to the inherently low nutrient availability in the soil solution. Leaf sprays containing micronutrients are commonly applied to orchards, even though the nutrient supply via soil could be of practical value. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Zn fertilizers that are applied to the soil surface on absorption and partitioning of the nutrient by citrus trees. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with one-year-old sweet orange trees. The plants were grown in soils with different textures (18.1 or 64.4% clay) that received 1.8 g Zn per plant, in the form of either ZnO or ZnSO4 enriched with the stable isotope 68Zn. Zinc fertilization increased the availability of the nutrient in the soil and the content in the orange trees. Greater responses were obtained when ZnSO4 was applied to the sandy loam soil due to its lower specific metal adsorption compared to that of the clay soil. The trunk and branches accumulated the most fertilizer-derived Zn (Zndff) and thus represent the major reserve organ for this nutrient in the plant. The trees recovered up to 4% of the applied Zndff. Despite this relative low recovery, the Zn requirement of the trees was met with the selected treatment based on the total leaf nutrient content and increased Cu/Zn-SOD activity in the leaves. We conclude that the efficiency of Zn fertilizers depends on the fertilizer source and the soil texture, which must be taken into account by guidelines for fruit crop fertilization via soil, in substitution or complementation of traditional foliar sprays.  相似文献

Soil applications of 1 or 2 g paclobutrazol (Pbz) and foliar sprays of 1000 mg L-1 GA3 to adult peach trees [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] had opposite effects: vegetative growth was inhibited by paclobutrazol and promoted by GA3, whereas mean fruit yield was greater in Pbz-treated trees and less in GA3-sprayed trees. Compared to controls, differences in the concentration of different mineral nutrients occurred in leaves collected shortly after fruit harvest: in Pbz-treated trees, the concentration of N and K significantly decreased, whereas that of Mg and Mn increased. Leaves of trees sprayed with GA3 had a significantly lower concentration of N and Ca and Mn, and a slightly greater concentration of K. In spite of these changes, element concentrations were within accepted ranges and therefore the nutritional status of peach trees did not change with the application of both growth regulators. Pbz did not alter the concentrations of chlorophylls, whereas GA3 significantly reduced the concentrations of chlorophylls a and b. Neoxanthin, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and ß-carotene concentrations were unaffected by all treatments.Mention of trademark, warranty, proprietary product, or vendor does not constitute a guarantee by the C.S.I.C. Fruit sugar content is one of the most important flavor quality traits in the fresh market. Minerals, such as boron (B) and calcium (Ca), are associated with fruit sugar and starch accumulation in many plant species. To better understand the roles of B and Ca in affecting sugar and starch accumulation in apples, 2 g L?1 Na2B4O7·10H2O or 10 g L?1 CaCl2 was supplied by foliar spray to 20-year-old ‘Fuji’ (Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Fuji) trees at four developmental stages (fruit set, onset of rapid fruit growth, rapid fruit growth and the end of rapid fruit growth), in 2010–2011. The most effective treatment significantly increasing soluble sugar and starch levels in ripening fruit was the foliar application of 2 g L?1 Na2B4O7·10H2O during rapid fruit growth, and the robustness of the effects was confirmed for two cultivars, ‘Fuji’ and ‘Orin’, at three orchards in 2011. Foliar applications of B during the onset of rapid fruit growth and rapid fruit growth, as well as the foliar application of Ca at fruit set, significantly increased the soluble sugar content in ripening fruit. In addition, the B application was effective in increasing the fruit starch content, but Ca was not. Both B and Ca treatments significantly increased the leaf concentrations of the other element at least transiently. However, B and Ca effects on fruit sugar/starch did not seem to depend on higher leaf B or Ca levels. An important trait defining fresh tomato marketability is fruit shelf life. Exotic germplasm of Solanum pimpinellifolium is able to prolong shelf life. Sixteen recombinant inbred lines with differing values of shelf life and fruit weight were derived by antagonistic-divergent selection from an interspecific cross involving Solanum pimpinellifolium. The objective of this study was to evaluate these recombinant inbred lines for many fruit quality traits such as diameter, height, size, acidity, colour, firmness, shelf life and weight, and to characterize them by amplified fragment length polymorphism markers. For most traits, a wide range of genetic variability was found and a wide range of molecular variation was also detected. Both sets of data allowed the identification of recombinant inbred lines by means of cluster analysis and principal component analysis. Genetic association among some amplified fragment length polymorphism markers and fruit quality traits, suggested by the principal component analysis, could be identified by single point analysis. Potential molecular markers underlying agronomical traits were detected in these recombinant inbred lines.  相似文献
