Plants thought to be typical of 7 species were chosen to represent the various taxa of Carthamus species with 10 pairs of chromosomes. These entities were crossed in all possible combinations and 20 of the possible 21 interspecific hybrids were obtained after 3 seasons of crosses. Analyses of the hybrids included studies of microsporocytes, pollen stainability, achene fertility, rudimentary ovaries, and other morphological characteristics. Pairing of chromosomes at metaphase I indicated no translocations were present in hybrids between C. tenuis from Israel, C. alexandrinus from Egypt, C. glaucus from northern Israel, and C. syriacus from Jordan. Members of this group are assigned the standard arrangement. Hybrids of C. glaucus from Iran, C. glaucus from Syria, and C. dentatus from Turkey always showed a translocation or chromosomal interchange when crossed with any member having the “standard” arrangement. The last 3 species are considered to have the “non-standard” chromosomal arrangement. The parental species used in this study can be regarded as a set of testers which will allow identification of chromosomal differentiation in additional Carthamus materials as they are collected.  相似文献

It has often been assumed that the introduced species Chrysanthemoides monilifera is displacing native species in invaded coastal communities in Australia but no direct evidence has been presented that this displacement is occurring and, if so, to what extent. At an invaded site near Moruya, New South Wales, we found strong negative correlations between the presence (measured as cover, frequency or volume of shrub) of C. monilifera and Acacia longifolia, the hitherto dominant native species, and of C. monilifera and Lomandra longifolia. The negative correlations are partly accounted for by differences in the amounts of each species on different zones on the dune, but the negative correlations remain even within these zones. Also a comparison with uninvaded sites indicates that C. monilifera is displacing A. longifolia from the fore-dune and mid-dune but is having less effect in the swale. In addition, there is a trend towards reduced seed production of A. longifolia when growing in proximity to C. monilifera. There is no significant difference in the presence of L. longifolia in the uninvaded and invaded sites. In invaded sites, significantly fewer C. monilifera seedlings occur in the presence of L. longifolia. Thus it appears that the observed negative associations arise from different causes. Chrysanthemoides monilifera is displacing the structurally similar, and previously dominant A. longifolia, while the tussock-forming L. longifolia is locally hindering the invasion.  相似文献

Displacement of Acacia longifolia on coastal dunes in New South Wales by the invasive species Chrysanthemoides monilifera may be linked to the greater competitiveness by the latter in the seedling stage, as demonstrated in pot experiments. This occurs despite a lower chlorophyll concentration in shoots of C. monilifera which leads to a lower assimilation rate per unit leaf area and lower carbohydrate concentrations. However, this assimilate is spread over a greater total leaf area. Such a strategy associated with‘quantity’may thus be more important than leaf‘quality’in terms of competitiveness. In A. longifolia, the production of higher quality‘leaves’but of lower total area may be well-suited in the often sparse native populations found in sand dunes, but appears disadvantageous when seedlings of C. monilifera also co-exist. The competitive advantage of C. monilifera over A. longifolia is reduced but not reversed under water stress. Under severe stress, mortality of C. monilifera is greater than that of A. longifolia in monocultures but mortality of both species is similar in mixtures. The reason appears to be that C. monilifera transpires more water per plant even though its rate of transpiration per unit leaf area is reduced under water stress because of early stomatal closure. In mixtures, faster root growth of C. monilifera ensures faster uptake of the available soil water, thus minimizing the inherent advantage in A. longifolia of its lower water use and greater efficiency.  相似文献

The Hexaploid wheat variety Fukuho was crossed with Tripsacum dactyloides (2n=4x=72). The total fertilization frequencies for the egg cell, polar nuclei, and both, were 58.3%, 26.8% and 58.9% of the 168 ovaries examined. However, the fertilization frequency of single polar nuclei was much lower at only 0.6%. The total frequency of fertilization was higher than that in wheat x maize crosses. A total of 49 hexaploid wheat varieties, including Hope carrying the dominant genes Kr1 and Kr2, were crossed with T. dactyloides, and most gave embryos. The embryoformation frequencies ranged from 0.5% to 59.0%. A higher frequency of 32.0% embryo formation was obtained following pollination of the variety Hope. In comparison with embryo formation in wheat x maize crosses the difference of embryo-formation frequencies between the two crosses was significant. The results of high frequencies of fertilization and embryo formation in wheat x T. dactyloides crosses indicated that the Kr genes are as inactive in wheat x T. dactyloides, as they are in wheat x maize crosses, and also that the efficiency of fertilization and embryo formation is higher in wheat x T. dactyloides than in what x maize crosses. The potential of wheat x T. dactyloides crosses for wheat haploid production and wheat improvement is discussed.  相似文献

Two types of chromosomal abnormality have been found in natural populations of Myzus persicae in Japan. One type is apparently due to an autosome 3 dissociation, giving a 2n=13 karyotype. The other is interpreted as a translocation between autosomes 1 and 3, resulting in a 2n=12 complement with marked structural heterozygosity. In laboratory crosses, both types of abnormality were inherited through the sexual phase. The proportions of each type in the F1 agreed well with expectations, except that no forms homozygous for the translocation were obtained from crosses between translocation heterozygotes, and no karyotypes with both the translocation and the dissociation were obtained when translocated and dissociated forms were crossed. In the F1 of one cross a triploid clone with the autosomal 1,3 translocation was obtained.  相似文献

Summary The partial sterility found in several advanced generation, sodium azide-induced lines of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was investigated. Plants of mutant lines were reciprocally crossed with plants of their untreated mother lines. Spike sterility was measured in the selfed offspring of the plants crossed and in F1 and F2 progeny. Pollen sterility and endosperm development were analyzed in the selfed offspring of the plants crossed. Results indicated that the sterility was inherited in the mutant lines and was not caused by translocations, inversions, endosperm lethals, embryo-endosperm lethals, or major gene mutations. Furthermore, the sterility was not cytoplasmically inherited, and was essentially eliminated in the F1 and F2 of crosses between partially sterile lines and their fertile parents. Porphyra yezoensis Ueda artificial pigmentation mutants, yel (green), fre (red‐orange) and bop (pink), obtained by treatment with /V‐methyl‐/V′‐nitro‐N‐nitrosoguanidine, were genetically analysed. The mutations associated with color phenotypes are recessive because all of the heterozygous conchocelis resembled the wild type color when they were crossed with the wild type (wt). In the reciprocal crosses of yel × wt, both parental colors and eight types of blades appeared in the F1 gametophytic blades from the heterozygous conchocelis. Both colors segregated in the sectored F1 blades in a 1:1 ratio, indicating that the color pheno‐type of yel resulted from a single mutation in the nuclear gene. In the reciprocal crosses of fre × wt, however, four colors and more than 40 types of blades appeared in the F1 blades from the heterozygous conchocelis, indicating that the color phenotype of fre resulted from two mutations in different genes. In the reciprocal crosses of bop×wt, three colors and 12 types of blades were observed in the F1 blades from the heterozygous conchocelis. Both parental colors appeared far more frequently than the third new color. These results indicated that the color phenotype of bop resulted from two closely linked mutations in different genes, and the epistasis occurred in the F1 blades. The mutants, yel, fre and bop, differ from the spontaneous green (C‐O), the red (H‐25) and the violet (V‐O) mutants of P. yezoensis, respectively.  相似文献

Plants lose some of their parental investment through fruit abortion. Resource conservation theory predicts that the maternal plant should abort those fruits furthest from maturity in order to conserve scarce resources. Embryo-quality theory predicts that the maternal plant should favor offspring of particular genotypes. I recorded the patterns of maternal investment in floral cohorts of domesticated and wild beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L. In accord with the resource conservation theory, late pod cohorts have the highest fruit abortion rates. When domesticated beans are grown in smaller pots, late cohort survivorship declines. When domesticated beans are crossed with pollen donors of different degrees of relatedness, the fruit abortion rate is the same even though seeds from the outbred crosses weigh more. The challenge for ecologists is to model and test the combined and possibly conflicting effects of selection for resource conservation and high offspring quality.  相似文献

The joint effects of parental gene fixation and consanguinity of mates upon the fitness of matings was examined in Mimulus guttatus. Plants from four populations were crossed at five levels of genetic relatedness, and five viability characters were scored in progeny. Parental gene fixation at 12 polymorphic allozyme loci was partitioned into local, subpopulation, and population components. A model is proposed wherein parental gene fixation influences distance-dependent crossing success. At a fixed locus, inbreeding is favored if natural selection caused allele fixation, or is disfavored if gene fixation was random. The distance between mates required to eliminate gene fixation depends upon patch size of fixation. When selective fixation and patch size differ among loci, an optimal crossing distance is possible. In M. guttatus, progeny viability generally decreased with greater relatedness between mates, but this decrease was often heterogeneous among populations. The highest pollen viability and the lowest seed set were found at an intermediate relatedness between mates. To determine whether parental gene fixation influences these crossing patterns, a type of mutational-load analysis was performed. Progeny fitness was regressed on parent F and fitness estimated at F = 1. This was done for each component of F, for a) crosses that maintain gene fixation and b) crosses that eliminate gene fixation. A multiplicative, composite measure of fitness indicates that, in M. guttatus, genes fixed during local or population differentiation favor outbreeding, while genes fixed during subpopulation differentiation favor inbreeding. This predicts that random mating within subpopulations confers highest progeny fitness, exclusive of between-population matings. However, predictions did not fit the observed patterns of crossing success very well, perhaps because gene fixation was relatively low or was not adequately measured at loci influencing fitness.  相似文献

Abstract

The hepatic Nardia insecta Lindb. is reported from a streamside locality in the Kielder district of South Northumberland, new to Britain. It was first collected in 1964 when herbarium specimens were initially referred to N. geoscyphus. Plants of N. insecta were refound in 1993 at the same locality where it has persisted while conifer plantations have developed in the surrounding catchment. N. insecta from Northumberland is described and illustrated, and a chromosome count of n = 18 is reported. It is compared with N. geoscyphus which has been found to be represented in the British Isles by two forms that differ in morphology and geographical distribution.  相似文献

Resistance to Brevicoryne brassicae has been identified in the progeny of two selected kale (B. oleracea var. acephala) plants, one from the F1 hybrid cultivar ‘Arsis RS’ and one from the landrace ‘Butzo’. These plants were crossed with susceptible B. oleracea morphotypes that have different periods to flowering. The type of susceptible plant line used had an effect on the resistance phenotypc of the progeny. Tested F2 populations derived from these crosses show that resistance is not under simple genetic control. This, in addition to variation in aphid numbers within accessions, suggests that separation of genetic components of control from environmental ‘noise’ for any accession may only be possible by the production of double haploid plant lines.  相似文献

Summary Ten Avena sterilis L. lines of Mediterranean origin were crossed with six A. sativa L. cultivars from the North Central USA. Additionally, six intervarietal crosses were made among the A. sativa cultivars. F2- derived lines from each cross type (interspecific and intraspecific) were evaluated for transgressive segregation for grain yield and several vigor traits. Mean percentages of transgressive segregates one LSD0.05 above the high parent for vegetative growth index and biomass were 9.0% and 9.8%, respectively, from interspecific crosses, but only 4.5% and 2.9%, respectively, from intraspecific crosses. However, there were two and a half times more high transgressive segregates for grain yield from intra than from interspecific crosses. The maximum vegetative growth index among segregates from interspecific crosses was 0.2 q/day/ha greater than the highest segregate from intraspecific crosses. However, mean harvest index was reduced materially by the introgression of A. sterilis germplasm. Because there was no genetic association between vegetative growth index and harvest index, however, it should be possible to improve both harvest index and vegetative growth index and, thus, the grain yield of cultivated oats.Journal Paper No. J-11228 of the Iowa Agric. and Home Econ. Robust reproductive isolation was found between the rainbow darter Etheostoma caeruleum and the orangethroat darter Etheostoma spectabile, as more offspring were produced when conspecific males and females were crossed as compared with heterospecific crosses. Furthermore, fewer eggs resulted from heterospecific crosses involving sympatric E. spectabile females than those using allopatric E. spectabile females, while a similar pattern was not observed in heterospecific crosses using E. caeruleum females. These results suggest that reinforcement, i.e. selection for pre‐zygotic reproductive barriers driven by reduced hybrid fitness, may have contributed to the evolution and maintenance of reproductive barriers between these potentially hybridizing species in sympatry.  相似文献

The genetic variation of seven enzymes for a total of nine loci was investigated in three species of terrestrial orchids of the genusCephalanthera:C. longifolia, C. rubra, andC. damasonium. These species are characterized by presenting different breeding types: outbreeding , outbreeding with facultative vegetative reproduction, and inbreeding, respectively. Electrophoretic evidence points to a difference in the behaviour of each of the three species which seems strictly related to the breeding type. On the basis of our resultsC. longifolia behaves as a normal outbreeder, whileC. rubra presents the influence of vegetative reproduction in some populations and not in others.C. damasonium shows a total lack of both among and within populations genetic variation, which is most probably due to the autogamic breeding type.  相似文献

Fungus strains designated asFusarium sambucinum, F. torulosum, orFusarium sp. nov. were crossed withMAT1-1 andMAT1–2 tester strains ofGibberella pulicaris. Of the 40 field strains that were crossed with the tester strains, 13 strains produced fertile crosses and 27 strains did not produce fertile crosses. One strain designated asF. torulosum was fertile with a tester strain ofG. pulicaris, suggesting that this is an intraspecies cross and that the strain isG. pulicaris, and, consequently,F. sambucinum rather thanF. torulosum. The lack of fertile crosses between tester strains and 27 of the 40 field strains suggests that these strains are notG. pulicaris. Although the ability to form a fully fertile cross with a tester strain can determine the species of a fertile strain, it is more problematic to exclude a strain only because it is infertile.  相似文献

Reproductive compatibility was studied among populations of different types of the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor ), i.e., the diapausing type from pear (DP), the non-diapausing type from citrus (C) and that from pear (NP). Copulation was also observed between mates of different types (DP and C). Only in crosses between C ♀ and DP ♂, was copulation occasionally broken off prematurely; duration of copulation varied considerably between pairs and the average duration was much shorter than that between DP ♀ and C ♂ and than that in crosses between mates of the same types. No F1 adult females were produced at all from crosses between DP and C, showing that there was a complete reproductive isolation between the two types. There was a significant reciprocal difference in the egg hatchability and survival rate of immatures in the F1 progeny; mortality in the eggs and that in the immature stage were significantly higher in crosses between DP ♀ and C ♂, as compared to those in the reciprocal cross. This suggested that fertilization may have occurred in the former cross, whereas it seemed that eggs were not fertilized in crosses between the C ♀ and DP ♂. The NP was compatible with the C, whereas it was completely incompatible with the DP. Thus, there was a complete reproductive incompatibility between the diapausing and non-diapausing type of P. citri.  相似文献

Summary Experimental pollinations of Costus allenii (Zingiberaceae) were conducted to assess the effects of pollen composition on fitness. Plants were selfed, outcrossed with the first nearest neighbor, and outcrossed with pollen mixtures obtained from the nearest 2, 3, and 5 plants. Cross type had a significant effect on seed production, seed weight and total-plant dry weight. Progeny from crosses with 3, and 5 parents grew significantly larger than selfed progeny, or those from 1-parent crosses. Competition experiments indicated the superiority of progeny from 3-, and 5-parent crosses over progeny from 1-parent crosses, but no differences in competitive ability were observed between progeny from 3-, and 5-parent crosses. Relative fitness, based on 1) seed production, 2) percent germination, and 3) dry weight, varied significantly among crosses, and was greatest for crosses with 3 parents and lowest for selfs. The relative fitness of progeny from 5-parent crosses was lower than that of all other outcrossed classes. We suggest that the significant effect of pollen composition on fitness results from variation in the genetic similarity of seed and pollen parents, which is a function of spatial distribution and population structure.  相似文献

The copepod Apocyclops dengizicus (Lepeschkin, 1900), a denizen of the saline waterbodies of the desert and semidesert regions of the world, was found in one of the tributaries of the hyperhaline Lake Elton (Volgograd oblast). This finding marks the northernmost locality where this species has been recorded in Russia. An analysis of the latest published data shows that the northern limit of the range of this species crosses the Russian Transvolga Region and middle Kazakhstan approximately along the 50th latitude. The northernmost locality where this copepod has been recorded to date is still its type locality, Lake Siletiteniz (53°N) in northern Kazakhstan. The possibility of finding A. dengizicus in adjacent oblasts of Russia as far north as the 55th latitude, where there are many highly mineralized waterbodies fit for this species, cannot be excluded.  相似文献
