The abundance of freshwater snails in two rural sites of Pinar del Río, Cuba, which harbor Pseudosuccinea columella susceptible and resistant to miracidia of Fasciola hepatica was followed for one year. Susceptible snails were found in the most anthropic site (IPA) whereas the resistant population inhabited the most preserved one (El Azufre). Only two snail species coexisted with P. columella at IPA site (Physa cubensis and Tarebia granifera) while five species were found at El Azufre, including an endemic from that province (Hemisinus cubanianus). Populations of both resistant and susceptible snails showed stable densities throughout the year, although the susceptible strain attained higher abundance. The highest densities were observed in April-May 2004 for the susceptible population whereas the resistant strain attained its highest abundance in January 2004. No record of Fossaria cubensis was made and the thiarid T. granifera occurred only at low densities. One of the sampled sites (IPA) meets all the conditions for the first report of P. columella naturally infected with larvae of F. hepatica.  相似文献

A buthanol extract of Phytolacca dodecandra (type 44) obtained from Ethiopia berries, was tested as molluscicide in our laboratory and in the field. The lethal dose (LD90) for adult snails, newly hatched and egg-masses of Biomphalaria glabrata, in 24 hours exposure, were of 4.5, 23.0 and 102.0 ppm respectively. The LD90 for the fish Lebistes reticulatus was of 2.0 ppm. These results are similar to those of Lemma (1984) in Ethiopia. In two water ponds treated with 10 ppm of the buthanol extract or 3 ppm of niclosamide the mortality rates of B. glabrata were of 84.6 and 100.0%, respectively. Both treatments were toxic for L. reticulatus in the field trials. The possibility of using molluscicides derived from plants is discussed as an alternative for treatment of schistosomiasis foci in Brazil.  相似文献

Biomphalaria glabrata snails and egg-masses were exposed, for six to twenty-four hours to concentrations of 1, 10, 100 and 1000 ppm of Eugenol, O-methyleugenol, O-benzyleugenol and dehydrodieugenol. Only at 10 ppm O-benzyleugenol enhanced mortality of snails and egg-masses. The other substances showed ovicidal and molluscicidal activity only at 100 and 1000 ppm concentrations, causing a significant cardiac frequency reduction in snails after 6 to 24 hours of exposure as well as perduring low cardiac rates until 24 hours afterwards. Two specimen exposed to 100 ppm O-methyleugenol presented anesthetic effect and extrusion of copulator and urethral organs. No schistosomicide or anesthetic effects were observed in mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni and treated during 5 days with oral doses of 150 mg/kg of Eugenol, O-methyleugenol and O-benzyleugenol.  相似文献

The variation of abundances of intermediate snail hosts of Fasciola hepatica in Cuba (Fossaria cubensis and Pseudosuccinea columella) was studied during one year under natural conditions at five sampling sites in San Juan y Martinez municipality, Pinar del Rio province, Cuba. The effect of some environmental variables on the lymnaeid abundances was also studied. A canonical correspondence analysis showed that both species do not generally occur together in the same habitat and that most factors affect them in an opposite fashion, although both of them correlate positively through time to the diversity of the habitats. F. cubensis prefers the sites that are in or closer to the city whereas P. columella is more abundant in rural sites. Lymnaeid abundances are mainly affected by nitrite and nitrate concentrations as well as by the abundance of the thiarid Tarebia granifera. F. cubensis is more abundant in polluted habitats with low densities (or absence) of T. granifera whereas P. columella prefers cleaner habitats and can coexist with the thiarid, even at its higher densities. The implications of divergent preferences of the two lymnaeids for the control of fasciolosis are discussed.  相似文献

The molluscicidal evaluation of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii (Crown of thorns) against Lymnaea columella snails, intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, in irrigation ditches of the Pisciculture Station at Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, was studied under limited field conditions. An aqueous solution of the latex at 5 mg/l was tested in two irrigation ditches (experimental and control ditches), after initial sampling of the snail population present. Twenty-four hours after application of the product, it was verified that 97.4% of free L. columella snails and 100% of snails of the same species captive in cages and used as sentinels at three points equidistant from the application site in the experimental ditch, died. For Biomphalaria tenagophila and Melanoides tuberculata snails, present in the experimental ditch, the mortality was 100%, for the species Pomacea spp. the mortality was 40%. No mortality was verified in the free mollusks, or in the sentinels in the ditch used as control. E. splendens var. hislopii latex is thus an efficient natural molluscicide, which may be used as an alternative control agent against L. columella.  相似文献

After screening 200 species of Puerto Rican plants, Solanum nodiflorumwas selected for comprehensive laboratory evaluation as a source of natural molluscicide. All parts of this plant were found toxic to the snails Fossaria (Lymnaea) cubensis, Lymnaea columella, Biomphalaria glabrata, and Physa cubensis. No toxicity was found against Marisa cornuarietisand Tarebia granifera. The toxicant was not affected by pH and dry storage. There was a direct correlation between temperature and molluscicidal activity. The plant is easy to find locally and could be developed into cheap, safe means for controlling both Schistosomaand Fasciolasnail hosts in Puerto Rico.  相似文献

Copper in the form of copper sulfate (CuSO4) decreases the survival of Biomphalaria glabrata snails, but the effects of this molluscicide on Echinostoma caproni and Echinostoma trivolvis, 2 species of digeneans that use B. glabrata as intermediate hosts, are not known. Studies were done on the effects of various concentrations of CuSO4 in artificial spring water (ASW) on the survival and infectivity of E. caproni and E. trivolvis cercariae. Solutions containing 1.0, 0.1, and 0.01% CuSO4 were 100% lethal within 2 hr of exposure for both species. Time to 50% mortality in 0.001% CuSO4 was 8 hr for E. caproni and 16 hr for E. trivolvis; at 24 hr, the controls showed 50 and 65% mortality, respectively. Treatment of cercariae of both species for 0.5 hr in 0.001% CuSO4 had no effect on the ability of cercariae to form normal cysts in juvenile B. glabrata snails. However, treatment with 0.01% CuSO4 for 0.5 hr caused a significant reduction in the ability of cercariae of both species to encyst in snails. Treatment of encysted metacercariae of both species in 0.001% CuSO4 for I hr had no effect on subsequent excystation of these echinostomes in a trypsin-bile salts medium, whereas concentrations of 1.0, 0.1, and 0.01% CuSO4 and 1.0 and 0.1% CuSO4 decreased chemical excystation of E. caproni and E. trivolvis cysts, respectively. Survival studies on the effects of CuSO4 in Locke's solution on chemically excysted metacercariae of both species were also done. Excysted metacercariae of both species were killed by 2 hr in either 0.1 or 0.01% CuSO4 in Locke's solution. However, time to 50% mortality for both species of excysted metacercariae in 0.001% CuSO4 was approximately 5 hr. Time to 50% mortality for the controls was about 12 hr. Survival of juvenile B. glabrata snails was also examined. All B. glabrata snails were dead by 6 hr in 1 and 0.1% CuSO4 in ASW. Biomphalaria glabrata snails showed 50% mortality by about 6 hr in 0.01% CuSO4 and about 80% were still alive at 24 hr in 0.001% CuSO4. All controls were alive at 24 hr, at which time the experiment was terminated. Concentrations greater than 0.001% CuSO4 increased snail mortality, as well as that of the cercariae and excysted metacercariae of E. caproni and E. trivolvis. Our findings suggest that concentrations of copper sufficient to eliminate juvenile B. glabratta snails are also sufficient to kill the cercariae and excysted metacercariae of these digeneans but not the encysted metacercariae, which may be protected by their cyst walls.  相似文献

Molluscicide activity of some natural products on Biomphalaria glabrata   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The molluscicide activity of aqueous (macerated and boiled), hexanic and ethylic extracts of Aristolochia brasiliensis, Caesalpinia peltophoroides, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Delonix regia, Spathodea campanulata and Tibouchina scrobiculata was evaluated in the laboratory. The solutions obtained from those extracts were tested on adults and egg masses of Biomphalaria glabrata reared in the laboratory at 1, 10, 20, 100 and 1000 ppm concentrations. The most active of the extracts studied was D. regia flowers' (flamboyant) ethylic extracts which presented molluscicidal activity on adult snails at 20 ppm.  相似文献

The latex of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii, at concentrations between 5 to 12 mg/l, kills 100% of the population of Biomphalaria glabrata in a lentic habitat, after 24 h. The lyophilized latex, stocked for 18 months, killed only 34.2% of the snails, at the concentration of 5 mg/l, and 96.0% at 12 mg/l. No lethal effect was observed among Pomacea haustrum exposed to the same concentrations of the molluscicide.  相似文献

An aqueous solution of the latex of "coroa de cristo" (Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii) showed molluscicide action (LD90) at a concentration lower than 0.5 ppm on Biomphalaria glabrata and B. tenagophila reared in laboratory and at a concentration lower than 4.0 ppm for field B. tenagophila.  相似文献

The effects of snail size on encystment of Echinostoma caproni cercariae in neonatal and juvenile Biomphalaria glabrata (NMRI strain) snails were studied. Encystment in neonatal (0.7-1.1 mm shell diameter) and juvenile (2-3 mm shell diameter) snails was compared 24 h post-infection (PI) following individual exposure of snails of each size to 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cercariae. Significantly more cysts were recovered from juveniles exposed to 1, 5, 10 and 50 cercariae than from neonatals with comparable exposure. Size of B. glabrata was a major factor in determining cyst burden in this planorbid. Survival of infected versus uninfected neonatals and juveniles was also examined for 7 days. Neonatals exposed to 10 cercariae showed a significant decrease in survival at 3, 6 and 7 days PI when compared to the uninfected controls. There was no significant decrease in the survival of juveniles exposed to 10 cercariae compared to uninfected controls at any time point. Snail size was a factor in mortality associated with echinostome cercarial penetration and encystment.  相似文献

Dominant lethal effects of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were evaluated in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata. Wild-type snails were exposed during 10 days to 50, 75 and 100ppm of 2,4-D dimethylamine salt (2,4-D DMA) and paired with non-exposed albino snails 1, 11, 25 and 40 days after the exposure. The offspring of the non-exposed albino snails was scored for lethal malformations. One day after the exposure, a significant effect was observed at 75 and 100ppm without a dose-response relationship. After 11 days, the effect was observed only at the highest dose. After 25 days, significant increases in the dominant lethal effects occurred at 50 and 75ppm; effects were directly related to the doses. Background levels of lethal malformations were resumed after 40 days. Although the major and direct measure of dominant lethal mutations is the rate of lethal malformations in the heterozygous offspring of the albino snails, the sensitivity of the assay was substantially increased with the evaluation of all non-viable embryos, that are the sum of those with lethal malformations, identified or not as wild-type.  相似文献

The latex action of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii (Christ's Crown) against snails Lymnaea columella, intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, derived from irrigation ditches of the Station of Pisciculture at Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, was studied in the laboratory. Lab bioassays, using aqueous solutions of the latex, varying between 0.1 and 10 mg/l, have proven molluscicidal activity of the product collected on the same day the tests were performed, during the four seasons of the year, finding the following lethal concentrations (LC90): 1.51 mg/l in the spring; 0.55 mg/l in the summer; 0.74 mg/l in the fall and 0.93 mg/l in winter, after 24 h exposure of the snails, showing significant differences among the seasons of the year (ANOVA test, F = 11.01, G.L.= 3/33, p < 0.05), as well as among the concentrations (ANOVA test, F = 27.38, G.L.= 11/33, p < 0.05). In the summer, mortality reached 100% from concentration at 0.6 mg/l, the same during fall and in winter as of 1 mg/l, while in spring it only reached 100% mortality as of 2 mg/l. Mortality in the controls was low, reaching 5% in the summer and winter and 10% in the fall and spring. None of the samples died. During the assay, with an aqueous solution of the latex at a concentration of 5 mg/l, in order to check the time of duration of the product effect, in the laboratory, it was observed that the molluscicidal activity remained stable up to the 15th day after the beginning of the test with 100% mortality of L. columella, gradually losing its effect until the 23rd day, when we no longer observed animal mortality. In the control group, there was a random daily variation in mortality rate ranging 0-50% after 48 h of observation for 30 days.  相似文献

The effects of aestivation or starvation on the neutral lipid and phospholipid content of Biomphalaria glabrata patently infected with Schistosoma mansoni were determined by high-performance thin-layer chromatography-densitometry. Infected-aestivated snails were maintained in a moist chamber at 24 +/- 1 C and a relative humidity of 98 +/- 1%. Infected-starved snails were maintained in artificial spring water (ASW) at 23 +/- 1 C without exogenous food. Infected snails (the controls) were maintained in ASW at 23 +/- 1 C and fed lettuce ad libitum. The 3 groups were maintained in the laboratory for 7 days, and then the lipids from the digestive gland-gonad complex (DGG) were extracted and analyzed by class. Infected-aestivated snails exhibited greater mortality rate and weight loss after 7 days than did the infected-starved snails. The steryl ester concentration in the infected-starved snails was significantly increased (P = 0.010) compared with the controls but not compared with infected-aestivated snails; the concentration of phosphatidylcholine in infected-aestivated snails was significantly decreased (P = 0.007) compared with the controls but not when compared with the infected-starved snails. Aestivation or starvation had a significant effect on the concentration of certain lipid classes in the DGG of B. glabrata infected with S. mansoni.  相似文献

A heat-labile plasma factor from genetically resistant 10-R2 Biomphalaria glabrata snails confers passively transferred resistance (PTR) to Schistosoma mansoni when injected into susceptible snails within 24-hr of exposure to miracidia. However, no additional details on PTR have emerged since the initial 1984 report, nor has the plasma resistance factor been characterized. In the present study, new information is provided on the occurrence of resistance factor in plasma of additional types of snails, effect of "priming" resistant plasma donors by prior exposure to miracidia, duration of PTR, molecular weight of resistance factor, and fate of sporocysts in snails with PTR. Susceptible NIH albino snails injected 24 hr prior to exposure to miracidia with individual samples of plasma from a different strain (Salvador B. glabrata) or a different species (B. obstructa) of nonsusceptible snail displayed infection prevalences of 49% or 59% of control levels, respectively, whereas injections of homologous plasma had no effect. PTR was not enhanced by prior exposure of resistant Salvador plasma donors to miracidia. Unexpectedly, PTR induced by injections of Salvador plasma persisted for at least 21 days. The molecular weight of the resistance factor(s) was between 10 and 30 kDa, based on results of centrifugal ultrafiltration. A significantly higher proportion of dead sporocysts occurred in histological sections of tentacles from snails injected with Salvador plasma than in tentacles of snails injected with NIH albino plasma at 7 days postexposure to miracidia. Most dead sporocysts in Salvador plasma-injected snails were undergoing gradual degeneration, rather than rapid, hemocyte-mediated destruction, as occurred in Salvador snails.  相似文献

An aqueous solution of the latex of Euphorbia tirucalli collected at sites receiving large amounts of sunlight showed molluscicide action on Biomphalaria glabrata, with LD50 obtained at the concentration of 28,0 ppm and LD90 at the concentration of 85,0 ppm. The toxicity of the product for fish was similar to that of Bayluscide and of copper sulfate used for comparison. However, the wide distribution of the plant, its easy propagation and the simple procedure for extraction of the active substance, which is biodegradable, favor "avelós" as a promising agent in the control of schistosomiasis.  相似文献

Continuous exposure of Biomphalaria glabrata snails to 0.1% colchicine resulted in a significant increase, relative to non-exposed snails, in the number of arrested mitotic figures in the amebocyte-producing organ (APO) as soon as 4 h, with peak numbers after 12 h of exposure. The number of circulating hemocytes was significantly elevated at 24 h. However, by 72 h both the number of mitotic figures in the APO and the concentration of circulating hemocytes in the hemolymph had returned to control levels. Hemocytes appeared to possess normal morphology throughout this exposure, including the formation of long filopodia with supporting rodlike structures that have been reported to contain microtubules. Snail survival decreased as a function of exposure time. Significantly fewer snails, relative to controls, survived a 48-h exposure, and only 1 out of 30 snails recovered from a 72-h exposure to 0.1% colchicine. Colchicine-exposed snails displayed intoxicated behavior, even upon removal from the colchicine solution, although no histopathology was evident in the CNS of snails exposed for 72 h.  相似文献

Life history traits of Fossaria cubensis were compared between isolated and paired snails after infection with three miracidia of Fasciola hepatica. Four experimental groups were tested: isolated-unexposed, paired-unexposed, isolated-infected, and paired-infected. A repeated-measures ANOVA showed statistically significant interactions among isolation, infection, and age effects for shell size, number of egg masses per snail, number of eggs per snail, and number of viable eggs per snail. Isolated-unexposed snails exhibited the higher values of these variables and those of survival and finite and intrinsic rates of natural increase. Infection stimulated shell growth during the prepatent period, but differences were present only in paired snails since isolation causes a similar effect. Reproduction, in terms of the number of egg masses per snail and the number of eggs per mass per snail, decreases in the presence of parasitic infection, whereas isolation stimulates it. These effects were observed from early stages of infection.  相似文献

The effect of exposing the lymnaeid snail Fossaria cubensis to the trematode Fasciola hepatica on the snail population's life-history traits was studied under laboratory conditions. Exposed individuals showed a lower survival rate than control snails, although from week 7 onward a slower decrease of this parameter in relation to the control group was observed. There were higher values of fecundity rate for the controls compared to the exposed group except during weeks 9, 10, 11 and 12, which was the time that followed the period when almost all of the infected snails died. Both the intrinsic and finite rates of natural increase were significantly higher for the control group, but exposed snails still attained a lower mean generation time. Age-specific trade-offs were found, mainly for the weekly increase in size versus the number of eggs per mass, the weekly increase in size versus the number of viable eggs per mass, the number of masses versus the hatching probability and the number of eggs versus the hatching probability. All these negative associations were significant for juveniles of both control and exposed snails and not for adults; however, exposed young individuals exhibited much higher values of the correlation coefficient than control animals.  相似文献

Studies on the population dynamics and natural infection of Lymnaea columella by Fasciola hepatica were carried out from September 1999 to December 2000 in a low-lying area near Itajubá in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais. A total of 626 snails were collected monthly at nine different sites, counted, and dissected to search for larvae of F. hepatica. The highest populations of L. columella were reached in October of 1999 and August of 2000, and the highest natural infection rates of snails by F. hepatica were reached in September 1999 (5.2%) and July 2000 (3.9%). The removal by farmers of aquatic plants from the drainage furrows caused a drastic reduction in this snail population.  相似文献
