2. The ecology of this karst aquifer was explored by sieving water from a spring, collecting water samples for analysis, and manipulating sediments and invertebrates in the laboratory. The size frequency distribution was stable and gravid females were present throughout the year, suggesting continuous reproduction.

Summary The shallow, alkaline pan of Lake Nakuru (conductivity 15,000–25,000 mho/cm, 20°C) usually maintains an exceptionally high standing crop of the cyanophyte Spirulina platensis (150–200 mg DW/l; DW=dry weight), the main food of a large population of the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor). The abundance and feeding of the lesser flamingo were studied in an attempt to quantify the lake's energy flow. Some data on other rift valley lakes with similar chemical and biological conditions are included, since they are inhabited by flamingos as well. The spatial distribution and total population of the flamingos were monitored on a monthly basis. The birds were counted automatically from aerial photographs by a particle counter. The mean was 915,000 in 1972 and 1973, and in 1974 the population dropped to a mean of 113,000. The population also showed pronounced short time fluctuations that are correlated with algal densities. Other possible causes for flamingo migrations are discussed. Flamingos feed by filtering planktonic organisms from the water with their bill. Feeding experiments with caged birds gave a clearing rate of 31.8±1.3 l/h (SE; SE=standard error) for an adult flamingo, a pumping rate of 17.5 strokes/s and a feeding rate of 5.6 g DW/h at the mean algal concentration of 180 mg DW/l in 1972/73. The mean feeding time in that period was 12.5 h/d, which gave a daily feeding rate of 72±6.5 g DW for an adult bird and 66±6 g DW for the average bird (juveniles included). Therefore the whole flamingo population extracted per day 60 t DW of algae (0.7 g DW/m3/d or 3 kcal/m3/d) from the lake. This is 50–94% of the daily primary production or 0.4 to 0.6% of the algal biomass and two to three times the amount all other primary consumers are feeding. About 0.75 kcal/m3/d are returned by fecal and urinary wastes. These feeding rates are slightly lower than calculations based on basic metabolic rates of birds. 相似文献

Summary Abiotic factors, standing crop and photosynthetic production were studied in the equatorial alkaline-saline closed-basin Lake Nakuru (cond. 10,000–160,000 S). Meteorological conditions and abiotic factors offer suppositions for a high primary productivity: mean solar radiation is 450–550 kerg·cm-2·s-1, with little seasonal variation, regular winds circulate the lake every day and nutrient concentrations are usually high (>100 g P–PO4·l-1). Oxygen concentrations near sediments were <1 gO2·m-3 for at least 6 h·d-1 in 1972/73, resulting in a release of 45 mg P–PO4·m-2·d-1. Attenuation coefficients vary from 3.6–16.5 according to algal densities and mean depth from 0–400 cm. Algal biomass was 200 g·m-3 (d.w.) in 1972/73, due to a lasting Spirulina platensis bloom (98.5% of algal biomass). In 1974 algal biomass suddenly dropped to 50 g·m-3 (d.w.). Spirulina and several consumer organisms almost vanished, but coccoid cyanobacteria, Anabaenopsis and diatoms increased. Several causes for this change in ecosystem structure are discussed. The use of the light/dark bottle method to measure photosynthetic production in eutrophic alkaline lakes is discussed and relevant experiments were done. Oxygen tensions of 2–35 gO2·m-3 do not influence primary production rates. Net photosynthetic rates (mgO2·m-3·h-1; photosynthetic quotient=1.18) reached 12–17.7 in 1972/73 and 2–3 in 1974, but vertically integrated rates were only 1–1.4 in 1972/73 and 0.8 in 1974, and daily net photosynthetic rates (gO2·m-3·24 h-1) 3.5 in 1972/73 and 1 in 1974. 50% of areal rates were produced within the 10 most productive cm of the depth profile. The disproportion between high algal standing crops and relatively low production rates is due to self-shading of the algae, reducing the euphotic zone to 35 cm in 1972/73 and 77 cm in 1974. Efficiency of light utilization is 0.4–2%, varying with time of day and phytoplankton density. In situ efficiencies show an inverse relationship to light intensities. Photosynthetic rates of L. Nakuru remain within the range of other African lakes (0.1–3 gO2·m-2·h-1). The relation of O2 produced/Chl a of the euphotic zone is 50% lower then in tropical African freshwater lakes and conforms to lakes of temperate regions. 相似文献

Summary The Cichlid fish Tilapia grahami (-Sarotherodon alcalicum grahami) was introduced into Lake Nakuru (Kenya) in about 1960 and is now one of the main herbivores. Spatial distribution and biomass changes were estimated from lift net catches from 1972–1974 which were partly continued until 1976. The length/weight relationship is represented by the equation W=0.008·l
2.98 (W=dry weight=24% of fresh-weight; l=standard length=85.1% of total length). The fish distribution is very patchy (aggregation coefficient 5.2–12.2). The density decreased and the mean fish size increased from in-shore to off-shore regions. At noon the fish concentrate near the shore and at hight they move off-shore, a migration pattern probably reflecting a preferance for higher temperatures. 70% of Tilapia concentrate in the top 50 cm and 80% in the top 100 cm. The total ichthyomass of the lake had a mean of 90 t dry weight (=2.1 g/m2) in 1972 and it increased to a mean of 400 t dry weight (=10.2 g/m2) during 1973. Possible causes for the spatial distribution and the biomass variations are discussed. The high density of Spirulina platensis makes nutritional competition among the herbivores unlikely. The main impact of Tilapia grahami on the lake's ecosystem is a substantial increase in diversity by extending the food chains to fish eating birds, of which the Great White Pelican is dominating. The breeding of Pelicans at a neighbouring lake causes a considerable nutrient export (13 t phosphorus/year). 相似文献

Summary Consumer biomass and spatial distribution in the equatorial alkaline-saline Lake Nakuru were studied from 1972–1976. These data will provide the basis for estimating feeding and production rates and for quantifying energy flow at the consumer level. Two of the main consumers, the Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) and the Soda Tilapia (Sarotherodon alcalicus grahami), were covered by earlier papers. The biomass of the only planktonic crustacean, the copepod Lovenula (=Paradiaptomus) africana was very high (1.5 gDW (dry weight)·m-3, mean in 1972/73) in comparison with other tropical lakes. Lovenula was absent in 1974 and 1975, and at very low levels (0.1–0.4 gDW·m-3) in part of 1976. Among the rotifers Brachionus dimidiatus dominated in 1972/73 (0.2 gDW· m-3), but was outnumbered by B. plicatilis throughout most of 1974 to 1976 (mean total rotifer biomass 1.4 gDW· m-3, peak densities 7 gDW·m-3); during high salinity periods (>20) Hexarthra jenkinae occurred in very low numbers. For short periods rotifers can be the dominant species of L. Nakuru. Aquatic heteroptera (four species) played a minor role: they contributed 0.4% to total consumer biomass in 1972/73; in 1974–1976 the lake had no aquatic heteroptera. Benthic biomass (0.4 gDW·m-2) was within the range of other tropical lakes, it consisted almost exclusively of Leptochironomus deribae. Bird counts of the twelve most important species are given for the years 1972–1974: Pelecanus onocrotalus accounts for 90% of the biomass (0.44 gDW·m-3, mean 1972/73) with peak densities of almost 20,000 birds.-The consumer organisms covered by this and the two preceding papers represent >99% of L. The effects of rainfall and temperature on the behavioural ecology of Chanler's mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula fulvorufula Rothschild) were examined on ranchland near Gilgil, Kenya. Ambient temperature was shown to be the proximate determinant of diurnal activity and rumination patterns. Mountain reedbuck were active during early morning and late afternoon, but rested and abandoned rumination when temperatures peaked at midday. There was close synchrony in levels of activity, rumination and use of cover and shade between males and females. Seasonal variations in time budgets were strongly influenced by rainfall patterns. Analyses revealed a one-month lag between rainfall and both peak grass growth and a decrease in rumination frequency. The proportion of time allocated to feeding decreased one month later, and was coincident with an increase in the proportion of grass in the diet. Reedbuck may therefore be prevented from exploiting high-quality new grass, possibly by gut-fill or induced imbalances in rumen pH. It is suggested that the unexpectedly high levels of browse in the diet is an adaptive response to low rainfall during the preceding two months. 相似文献

A survey for cassava mosaic disease (CMD) was conducted in Kenya, to investigate the factors contributing to the generally increased incidence and severity of CMD in the cassava growing regions and to study the distribution of the disease's causal begomoviruses, African cassava mosaic virus (ACMV) and East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV) and their strains. Special emphasis was given to the occurrence of the destructive recombinant Uganda variant strain of EACMV (EACMV-UG2). Samples from 91 farmers' fields in the main cassava-growing areas of coastal and western Kenya were collected and subjected to ELISA and PCR for detection and typing of the begomoviruses present. CMD incidence was highest in western Kenya (80–100%) and lowest in the Coast province (25–50%). In Western and Nyanza provinces, 52% of the samples tested contained EACMV-UG2, 22% ACMV and 17% contained both ACMV and EACMV-UG2. EACMV was found in four cases at different sites. In cassava samples from the coast province, only EACMV with DNA-A sequences similar to EACMV strains present in Kenya and Tanzania was found. East African cassava mosaic Zanzibar virus (EACMZV) was present in several farms in the Kilifi district. In 15% of all cassava samples with CMD symptoms, flexuous, filamentous virus-like particles were also found, providing evidence for a more complex virus situation in cassava grown at the Kenyan coast. In western Kenya, where intense cassava cultivation takes place, CMD is rampant and EACMV-UG2 was found in mixed virus infections with ACMV driving the epidemics. In coastal areas, where farms are scattered and in isolation, EACMV is endemic, however, with a lower disease incidence and with a limited impact to cassava production. 相似文献

BackgroundAnthrax is an important zoonotic disease in Kenya associated with high animal and public health burden and widespread socio-economic impacts. The disease occurs in sporadic outbreaks that involve livestock, wildlife, and humans, but knowledge on factors that affect the geographic distribution of these outbreaks is limited, challenging public health intervention planning.MethodsAnthrax surveillance data reported in southern Kenya from 2011 to 2017 were modeled using a boosted regression trees (BRT) framework. An ensemble of 100 BRT experiments was developed using a variable set of 18 environmental covariates and 69 unique anthrax locations. Model performance was evaluated using AUC (area under the curve) ROC (receiver operating characteristics) curves.ResultsCattle density, rainfall of wettest month, soil clay content, soil pH, soil organic carbon, length of longest dry season, vegetation index, temperature seasonality, in order, were identified as key variables for predicting environmental suitability for anthrax in the region. BRTs performed well with a mean AUC of 0.8. Areas highly suitable for anthrax were predicted predominantly in the southwestern region around the shared Kenya-Tanzania border and a belt through the regions and highlands in central Kenya. These suitable regions extend westwards to cover large areas in western highlands and the western regions around Lake Victoria and bordering Uganda. The entire eastern and lower-eastern regions towards the coastal region were predicted to have lower suitability for anthrax.ConclusionThese modeling efforts identified areas of anthrax suitability across southern Kenya, including high and medium agricultural potential regions and wildlife parks, important for tourism and foreign exchange. Fruit features of 17 Acaena species in New Zealand were investigated to determine the relations between reproductive allocation patterns, mode of dispersal and species ecology. Three basic morphological types, corresponding to major sections within the genus, are represented: spineless fruits (Sect. Pteracaena—one species), spined fruits lacking barbs (Sect. Microphyllae—6 species), and spined fruits with barbs (Sect. Ancistrum—10 species). The presence of terminal barbs on spines enhances fruit adhesion to animals, and is associated with the development of longer scapes, globular many-fruited capitula, and smaller single-seeded fruits. Barb-spined species generally have the broadest geographical range and habitat distribution within New Zealand, and are the only species of Acaena to occur in forests or on offshore islands. These species are generally strongly stoloniferous. Acaena species with barbless spines and/or no spines are often regional endemics confined to open and/or localised habitats, are rhizomatous, and may be dispersed by water, ingestion or wind. There is a tight correlation between intrageneric classification and species ecology and fruit features which requires testing via independent phylogenetic analysis based on molecular genetic characters. Although avian dispersers have declined since human settlement, introduced mammals may be performing a similar function for barbed Acaena species. 相似文献

Aspects of the ecology of a suburban population of rainbow lizards, Agama agama Linnaeus 1758, have been studied in Malindi, a coastal locality of SE Kenya. Four different family groups were monitored on a wall transect 120 m long. Each group constituted a dominant male (i.e. a brightly coloured and aggressive individual) and three to four adult females, but in one of the studied groups a subordinate male was also seen. Both sexes were active in the morning, and peak activity fell between 10.00 and 11.30 hours. Dominant males used elevated perches significantly more often than subordinate males and females. The diet consisted of terrestrial arthropods, and most of the prey eaten were beetles (6–8 mm long). The foraging strategy used by rainbow lizards was to eat small insects at very short time intervals. The lizards used sit-and-wait foraging, remaining motionless until the prey was <5 cm away. Over the last two decades there has been an exponential increase in the use of correlative species distribution models (SDMs) to address a variety of topics in ecology, biogeography, evolution, and conservation biology. Conversely, the use of these statistical methods to study the potential distribution of subterranean organisms has lagged behind, relative to their above‐ground (epigean) counterparts. The reason for this is possibly related to a number of peculiarities of subterranean systems, which pose important limits, but also opportunities, for these correlative models. The aim of this forum is to explore the caveats that need to be made when generalizing these statistical techniques to caves and other subterranean habitats. We focus on the typical bias in spatial datasets of cave‐dwelling species, and provide advice for selecting the model calibration area. In parallel, we discuss the potential use of different large scale surface variables to represent the subterranean condition. A more widespread adoption of these statistical techniques in subterranean biology is highly attractive and has great potential in broadening our knowledge on a variety of ecological topics, especially in the fields of climate change and biodiversity conservation. Their use would especially benefit the study of the biogeographic patterns of subterranean fauna and the impact of past and future climate change on subterranean ecosystems. 相似文献

Comparative architectonic studies have resulted in a classification of the amygdaloid complex which differs somewhat from the commonly used classification (first proposed by Humphrey, 1936) by separating the cortical amygdaloid nucleus from the centromedial group and assigning it to the basolateral group, which then forms a cortico-basolateral group. The size changes of these groups and of the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract (belonging to the centromedial group) and the large-celled part of the basal nucleus (belonging to the corticobasolateral group) have been investigated in representatives of an ascending primate scale. In all structural complexes investigated so far, the small-celled part of the cortico-basolateral group is the most progressive. In descending order of progression there follow: the corticobasolateral group as a whole, the amygdala as a whole, and the large-celled basal nucleus. No clear changes were found in the centromedial group as a whole, whereas the size of the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, which represents a small component of this latter group, shows a strong reduction. These differences in the developmental trends point to increasing or decreasing capacities of the functional (limbic and olfactory) systems, to which these structures are related. 相似文献

Mechanisms that govern the coexistence of multiple biological species have been studied intensively by ecologists since the turn of the nineteenth century. Microbial ecologists in the meantime have faced many fundamental challenges, such as the lack of an ecologically coherent species definition, lack of adequate methods for evaluating population sizes and community composition in nature, and enormous taxonomic and functional diversity. The accessibility of powerful, culture-independent molecular microbiology methods offers an opportunity to close the gap between microbial science and the main stream of ecological theory, with the promise of new insights and tools needed to meet the grand challenges humans face as planetary engineers and galactic explorers. We focus specifically on resources related to energy metabolism because of their direct links to elemental cycling in the Earth''s history, engineering applications and astrobiology. To what extent does the availability of energy resources structure microbial communities in nature? Our recent work on sulfur- and iron-oxidizing autotrophs suggests that apparently subtle variations in the concentration ratios of external electron donors and acceptors select for different microbial populations. We show that quantitative knowledge of microbial energy niches (population-specific patterns of energy resource use) can be used to predict variations in the abundance of specific taxa in microbial communities. Furthermore, we propose that resource ratio theory applied to micro-organisms will provide a useful framework for identifying how environmental communities are organized in space and time. 相似文献
