The relative cleanability of stainless steel, enamelled steel, mineral resin and polycarbonate domestic sink materials was assessed by comparing the number of organisms remaining on surfaces after cleaning. In unused condition all materials, other than one enamelled steel, were equally cleanable. Stainless steel, abraded artificially or impact damaged to a similar degree as stainless steel subjected to domestic wear, retained approximately one log order less bacteria after cleaning than the other materials subjected to the same treatments. Little difference in cleanability was recorded between the abraded surfaces of the other materials although enamelled steel surfaces were less cleanable than mineral resin or polycarbonate after impact damage, because of the greater susceptibility of enamelled steel to damage by this treatment. When cleaning time was extended beyond 10 s for the abraded and impact damaged materials, their cleanability was not enhanced as compared with stainless steel. Changes in surface finish after abrasion were assessed by surface roughness measurement and scanning electron microscopy. Surfaces with poor cleanability before and after abrasion were characterized by pitting, crevices or jags. These surfaces are likely to retain more bacteria because of increased numbers of attachment sites, a larger bacterial/material surface contact area and topographical areas in which applied cleaning shear forces are reduced. Materials that resist surface changes, e.g. stainless steel, will remain more hygienic when subjected to natural wear than materials which become more readily damaged.  相似文献

The relative cleanability of artificially abraded stainless steel, enamelled steel, mineral resin and polycarbonate domestic sinks was assessed by examining bacterial retention after cleaning. Two cleaning regimes were used: the mechanical action of wiping combined with a spray-rinse, and spray-washing at a range of temperatures. After wiping, stainless steel retained 0.5–1 log order fewer bacteria than the enamel sinks which in turn were 0.5 log order cleaner than the mineral resin and polycarbonate sinks. After spray-washing, stainless steel retained 0.5 log order fewer bacteria than enamel which in turn was 0.5 log order cleaner than the polycarbonate and mineral resin. Extending the number of wipes or increasing spray-wash temperature enhanced bacterial removal but, in general, did not change the relative cleanability of the sink materials. As a cleaning technique, wiping was shown to be more effective than spray-washing in reducing bacterial numbers. SEM studies showed that bacteria were typically retained in surface imperfections, particularly pits and crevices such that surfaces which sustained the most extensive damage due to abrasion retained higher numbers of bacteria.  相似文献

The Pangolin, a soil-burrowing animal, is covered with scales. These scales are often abraded by soil and rock and their surface is corrugated. The abrasive wear of the surface of the scales was examined. The scales were taken from a pangolin that had died of natural causes. The tests were run on a rotary disc abrasive wear tester. The abrasive material was quartz sand (96.5 wt.%) and bentonite (3.5 wt.%). The morphology of the abraded surfaces and the abrasion were examined by stereoscopic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The concepts are proposed of "Guiding-Effect" and "Rolling-Effect" on the textured surfaces under free abrasive wear conditions and the critical dimensions of the "Rolling-Effect" are discussed.  相似文献

The wear sustained by the teeth of the highly mineralized radula of Patella vulgata and the unmineralized radula of Agriolomax reticulatus has been studied with the scanning electron microscope. The unworn teeth of P. vulgata have tall pointed cusps and wear is first seen as a chipping of the tips then as abrasion. There is a well defined abraded surface giving the worn teeth a chisel shape. In cleaved teeth fibres ˜ 800 Å in diameter are observed parallel to the axis of the tooth. Evidence is presented for chemical etching and for the existence of a surface coat on the tooth. A. reticulatus teeth show wear over their whole surface. With the aid of the grooves in the jaw caused by the teeth the role of the jaw in flattening the radula and protracting and retracting the odontophore is confirmed. From the arrangement of the abraded surfaces on the teeth of P. vulgata it was deduced that the teeth rows are abraded one at a time while on a convex surface at or near the bending plane.  相似文献

The experimental abrasion of forming bone surfaces was conducted so that such surfaces could be characterized. This is particularly important to bone remodeling studies utilizing scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging of archeological material. Forming surfaces derived from subadult macaque cranial bone were treated by particle abrasion, water abrasion, sliding abrasion, brushing, manual rubbing, weight, exfoliation, chipping and replication. Acetic acid treatments were also performed. The effects of abrasive agents are specific but generally fall into rough (particle and water abrasion) and smooth (sliding abrasion, brushing, rubbing and weight) categories. Protohistoric human and Plio-Pleistocene hominid subadult craniofacial remains were observed with the SEM for comparison with experimental data. The more recent material appeared smooth, probably as a result of specimen preparation procedures using brushes. Surfaces were still interpretable as forming, however, using a more abrasion-resistant feature called intervascular ridging (IVR) described in this study. The IVR pattern is also recognized on the hominid sample, confirming the possibility of performing remodeling studies on abraded fossil material. The abrasion characteristics are somewhat more difficult to classify, however. Abrasion is defined and discussed relative to remodeling studies and taphonomy. The usefulness of the experimental data reported here, however, in paleoenvironmental reconstruction, has yet to be fully realized. Acid and mechanical preparation techniques are briefly addressed. It is concluded that it is possible to characterize a forming surface as abraded according to the findings of this study and that acid, if handled with care, will more likely preserve microanatomical surface detail. It would also be in everyone's interest to employ a less abrasive cleaning regime on archeological specimens.  相似文献

J. H. TAYLOR AND J. T. HOLAH. 1996. A range of floor and wall materials suitable for use in the food industry were selected for comparative bacterial cleanability tests. A standard cleaning regime was carried out on samples after biofilm development of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (CRA 296). Cleanability was measured as the log reduction in bacterial numbers. The results for the wall materials showed that there were no statistical differences, whilst those for the floor materials were more variable. The grouted joints and texture did not compromise the cleanabilities of tiled surfaces.  相似文献

To understand the corrosion properties of surgical scissors, 416 stainless steel disks and custom electrodes were used as simulated surfaces under various conditions. These simulated surfaces were exposed to tap water and 400-ppm synthetic hard water as Ca2CO3 under different conditions. The samples were evaluated by various techniques for corrosion potential and the impact of environmental conditions on the integrity of the passive film. The electrodes were used to monitor the corrosion behavior by potentiodynamic polarization technique in water both in the presence and absence of a cleaning product. The surface topography of the 416 stainless steel disks was characterized by visual observations and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the surface chemistry of the passive film on the surface of the scissors was characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results suggest that surgical instruments made from 416 stainless steel are not susceptible to uniform corrosion; however, they do undergo localized corrosion. The use of suitable cleaning products can offer protection against localized corrosion during the cleaning step. More importantly, the use of potentiodynamic polarization techniques allowed for a quick and convenient approach to evaluate the corrosion properties of surgical instruments under a variety of simulated-use environmental conditions.  相似文献

This study examined bacterial community structure of biofilms on stainless steel and polycarbonate in seawater from the Delaware Bay. Free-living bacteria in the surrounding seawater were compared to the attached bacteria during the first few weeks of biofilm growth. Surfaces exposed to seawater were analyzed by using 16S rDNA libraries, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Community structure of the free-living bacterial community was different from that of the attached bacteria according to FISH and DGGE. In particular, alpha-proteobacteria dominated the attached communities. Libraries of 16S rRNA genes revealed that representatives of the Rhodobacterales clade were the most abundant members of biofilm communities. Changes in community structure during biofilm growth were also examined by DGGE analysis. We hypothesized that bacterial communities on dissimilar surfaces would initially differ and become more similar over time. In contrast, the compositions of stainless steel and polycarbonate biofilms were initially the same, but differed after about 1 week of biofilm growth. These data suggest that the relationship between surface properties and biofilm community structure changes as biofilms grow on surfaces such as stainless steel and polycarbonate in estuarine water.  相似文献

The relative hygienic status of 16 stainless steel surfaces, characterised by topography and surface free energy was investigated. B. thuringiensis spores suspended in Bechamel sauce was chosen as the test fouling suspension. Surface topography was assessed using 10 standardised roughness parameters, along with scanning electron microscope observations. The number of residual adhering spores after a fouling and cleaning in place procedure was found to be influenced by the topography of the stainless steel surface, but not by the surface free energy. Among the various roughness parameters, RA, RRR RPK and RVK were shown to be related to the hygienic status. Microscopic observations demonstrated the influence of the shape and size of surface irregularities on the level of residual soil after cleaning. This confirms that the use of only one roughness parameter, usually RA, is not sufficient in defining the hygienic status of stainless steel surfaces.  相似文献

Biofouling of equipment surfaces in the food industry is due initially to physico-chemical adhesion processes, and subsequently to the proliferation of microbes within an extracellular polymer matrix. Two physico-chemical theories can be applied to predict simple cases of bacterial adhesion. However, these models are limited in their applicability owing to the complexity of bacterial surfaces and the surrounding medium. Various factors that can affect the bacterial adhesion process have been listed, all directly linked to the solid substratum, the suspension liquid or the microorganism. For stainless steel surfaces, it is important to take into account the grade of steel, the type of finish, surface roughness, the cleaning procedures used and the age of the steel. Regarding the suspension fluid within which adhesion takes place, pH, ionic composition and the presence of macromolecules are important variables. In addition, the adhering microorganisms have extremely complex surfaces and many factors must be taken into account when conducting adhesion tests, such as the presence of cell appendages, the method of culture, the contact time between the microorganism and the surface, and exopolymer synthesis. Research on biofilms growing on stainless steel has confirmed results obtained with other materials, regarding resistance to disinfectants, the role of the extracellular matrix and the process by which the biofilm forms. However, it appears that the bactericidal activity of disinfectants on biofilms differs according to the type of surface on which they are growing. The main cleaners and disinfectants used in the food industry are alkaline and acid detergents, peracetic acid, quaternary ammonium chlorides and iodophors. The cleanability and disinfectability of stainless steel surfaces have been compared with those of other materials. According to the published research findings, stainless steel is comparable in its biological cleanability to glass, and significantly better than polymers, aluminium or copper. Moreover, microorganisms in a biofilm developing on a stainless steel surface can be killed with lower concentrations of disinfectant than those on polymer surfaces.  相似文献

Dry-heat sterilization of planetary lander capsules requires a knowledge of the thermal resistivity of microorganisms in the environment to which they will be subjected during sterilization of the space hardware. The dry-heat resistance of Bacillus subtilis var. niger spores on various lander capsule materials was determined at 125 C. Eight surface materials were evaluated, including a reference material, stainless steel. Survivor curves were computed, and decimal reduction times (D values) were obtained by a linear regression analysis. In four tests on stainless steel, the average value of D at 125 C was 17.07 min. The D values for the other seven materials tested ranged from 18.64 min on magnesium surfaces to 20.83 min on conversion-coated magnesium. Of the materials evaluated, the results indicate that there is only a significant difference in the thermal resistance of B. subtilis var. niger spores on conversion-coated magnesium and conversion-coated aluminum from that on the reference material, stainless steel. The differences in D values for all the test surfaces may be the result of variations in test procedures rather than the effect of the surfaces on the thermal resistivity of the spores.  相似文献

The effect of different home industry materials on the growth of Chinese hamster cells in culture has been studied. The plating efficiency of the culture and the ability to produce a monolayer were used as criteria. The materials under study can be divided into three groups: indifferent materials, those partially inhibiting the cell growth, and destructive ones. While constructing the apparatus for cultivation, the following materials are to chosen: titanium, molybdenum glass, plexiglass, polycarbonate, lavsan, polyethylene, fruorine films, pentoplast, silicon rubber, stainless steel, white food plate rubber, teflon, polymerized epoxy resin.  相似文献

A method is described that will indicate the direction that an abrasive particle was traveling as it scored the surface of a brittle material. Light and scanning electron micrographs of glass, dentine, and enamel abraded by loose sand, steel carbide, and diamond indicate that partial Hertzian fracture cones are formed at the margins of wear striations during abrasion. The bases of these fracture cones face in the direction of travel of the abrasive particle and, therefore, indicate directionality. Because this method is based only on the consistent geometry of fracturing of brittle materials, it is independent of the loading of the abrasive particle. The only other method available to determine directionality of striations is unreliable since it uses the width of striations, and, hence, is dependent upon a consistent loading regime of the abrasive particle. This new method has direct application for determining the direction of movement of the jaws during mastication in living or fossil animals.  相似文献

Contamination of food contact surfaces with pathogens is considered an important vehicle for the indirect transmission of food-borne diseases. Five different cleaning cloths were assessed for the ability to remove viruses from food contact surfaces (stainless steel surface and nonporous solid surface) and to transfer viruses back to these surfaces. Cleaning cloths evaluated include two different cellulose/cotton cloths, one microfiber cloth, one nonwoven cloth, and one cotton terry bar towel. Four viral surrogates (murine norovirus [MNV], feline calicivirus [FCV], bacteriophages PRD1 and MS2) were included. Removal of FCV from stainless steel was significantly greater (P ≤ 0.05) than that from nonporous solid surface, and overall removal of MNV from both surfaces was significantly less (P ≤ 0.05) than that of FCV and PRD1. Additionally, the terry towel removed significantly fewer total viruses (P ≤ 0.05) than the microfiber and one of the cotton/cellulose cloths. The cleaning cloth experiments were repeated with human norovirus. For transfer of viruses from cloth to surface, both cellulose/cotton cloths and microfiber transferred an average of 3.4 and 8.5 total PFU, respectively, to both surfaces, and the amounts transferred were significantly different (P ≤ 0.05) from those for the nonwoven cloth and terry towel (309 and 331 total PFU, respectively). There was no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) in the amount of virus transfer between surfaces. These data indicate that while the cleaning cloths assessed here can remove viruses from surfaces, some cloths may also transfer a significant amount of viruses back to food contact surfaces.  相似文献

The effect of repeated conditioning procedures (25 runs), consisting of soiling (milk and meat products) and cleaning steps, on the hygienic status, physico-chemical properties and surface chemical composition of stainless steel (SS) surfaces, was investigated. Five SSs differing in grade and finish were used. Both soiling and surface cleaning/conditioning procedures resulted in a similar increase in the surface contamination with carbon, while the changes in the basic component of the surface free energy depended on the conditioning procedure. The passive film was also affected, the Fe/Cr ratio in particular. The hygienic status was also changed, especially with milk as shown by monitoring the number of residual adhering Bacillus cereus spores after contaminating the surface with spores followed by cleaning. The results show that in food environments, the presence and the nature of conditioning molecules play a major role in the hygienic status of SS surfaces.  相似文献

Background

Sandblasting particles which remain on the surfaces of dental restorations are removed prior to cementation. It is probable that adhesive strength between luting material and sandblasting particle remnants might exceed that with restorative material. If that being the case, blasting particles adhere to sandblasted material surface could be instrumental to increasing adhesive strength like underlying bonding mechanism between luting material and silanized particles of tribochemical silica coating-treated surface. We hypothesize that ultrasonic cleaning of bonding surfaces, which were pretreated with sandblasting, may affect adhesive strength of a resin luting material to dental restorative materials.

Methods

We therefore observed adhesive strength of resin luting material to aluminum oxide was greater than those to zirconia ceramic and cobalt-chromium alloy beforehand. To measure the shear bond strengths of resin luting material to zirconia ceramic and cobalt-chromium alloy, forty specimens of each restorative material were prepared. Bonding surfaces were polished with silicon abrasive paper and then treated with sandblasting. For each restorative material, 40 sandblasted specimens were equally divided into two groups: ultrasonic cleaning (USC) group and non-ultrasonic cleaning (NUSC) group. After resin luting material was polymerized on bonding surface, shear test was performed to evaluate effect of ultrasonic cleaning of bonding surfaces pretreated with sandblasting on bond strength.

Results

For both zirconia ceramic and cobalt-chromium alloy, NUSC group showed significantly higher shear bond strength than USC group.

Conclusions

Ultrasonic cleaning of dental restorations after sandblasting should be avoided to retain improved bonding between these materials.  相似文献

Doped diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings offer potential antifouling surfaces against microbial and protein attachment. In particular, stainless steel surgical instruments are subject to tissue protein and resilient prion protein attachment, making decontamination methods used in sterile service departments ineffective, potentially increasing the risk of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease during surgical procedures. This study examined the adsorption of proteins and prion-associated amyloid to doped DLC surfaces and the efficacy of commercial cleaning chemistries applied to these spiked surfaces, compared to titanium nitride coating and stainless steel. Surfaces inoculated with ME7-infected brain homogenate were visualised using SYPRO Ruby/Thioflavin T staining and modified epi-fluorescence microscopy before and after cleaning. Reduced protein and prion amyloid contamination was observed on the modified surfaces and subsequent decontamination efficacy improved. This highlights the potential for a new generation of coatings for surgical instruments to reduce the risk of iatrogenic CJD infection.  相似文献

The anisotropic fracturing and differential wear properties of enamel microstructure represent factors that can obscure the predictive relationship between dental microwear and diet. To assess the impact of enamel structure on microwear, this in vitro experimental study examines the relative contributions to wear of three factors: 1) species differences in microstructure, 2) direction of shearing force relative to enamel prisms and crystallites, and 3) size of abrasive particles. Teeth of Lemur, Ovis, Homo, and Crocodylus, representing, respectively, the structural categories of prismatic patterns 1, 2, and 3 and nonprismatic enamel, were abraded by shearing forces (forces having a component directed parallel to abraded surfaces) and examined by scanning electron microscopy. Striation width increased with particle size for nonprismatic, but not for prismatic, specimens. Direction of shear relative to prism and crystallite orientation had a significant influence on striation width in only some prismatic enamels. The different responses of prismatic and nonprismatic enamels to abrasion reflect the influence of structure, but at the level of organization of crystallites rather than prisms per se. Such interactions explain in part the inability of striation width to discriminate among animals with different dietary habits. Heteroscedasticity and deviations from normality also may confound parametric analyses of microwear variables. Variation in crystallite orientation in prismatic enamels may contribute to optimal dental function through the property of differential wear in functionally distinct regions of teeth.  相似文献

Desorption behavior of β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg), one of the main constituents of fouling deposits in milk processing, from stainless steel surfaces during caustic and enzymatic cleanings was studied by using a glass column packed with stainless steel particles fouled with β-Lg. Both in caustic and enzymatic cleanings, the amount of β-Lg remaining on the stainless steel particles decreased according to first-order kinetics at the initial stage, and gradually reached a constant value. The desorption rate constant at the initial stage and the residual amount of β-Lg after 2 h of cleaning were evaluated as the measures of cleaning efficiency under various conditions. In caustic cleaning, these two values were strongly affected by the concentration of NaOH. The initial desorption rate increased with increasing flow rate of the caustic solution, suggesting a mass transfer effect. In enzymatic cleaning, the maximum desorption rate constant was obtained at around the optimum pH for the enzyme reaction. The temperature dependence of the initial desorption rate constant was stronger in caustic cleaning than in enzymatic cleaning.  相似文献
