The genus Scelio is a cosmopolitan and speciose group of solitary parasitoids of the eggs of short-horned grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae). A number of these hosts are important pests, including plague locusts of the genus Schistocerca. Species of Scelio are recognized as potentially important biological control agents, but this possibility has yet to be fully realized, in part because the species-level taxonomy is still incompletely developed. The species of the pulchripennis group have been recently revised. As a continuation of this effort, here we revise the Afrotropical species of Scelio, excluding the pulchripennis species group. Sixty two (62) species are treated, 48 of which are new. Species are classified into the following species groups: ernstii (12 species, 9 new), howardi (23 species, 19 new), ipomeae (6 species, 5 new), irwini (4 species, 3 new), simoni (3 new species) and walkeri (12 species, 9 new). Keys to species groups and to the species within each group are provided. New species described are: S. albatus Yoder, sp. n., S. aphares Yoder, sp. n., S. apospastos Yoder, sp. n., S. ardelio Yoder, sp. n., S. aurantium Yoder, sp. n., S. balo Valerio & Yoder, sp. n., S. bayanga Yoder, sp. n., S. bubulo Yoder, sp. n., S. cano Yoder, sp. n., S. clypeatus Yoder, sp. n., S. concavus Yoder, sp. n., S. copelandi Yoder, sp. n., S. crepo Yoder, sp. n., S. destico Yoder, sp. n., S. dupondi Yoder, sp. n., S. effervesco Yoder, sp. n., S. erugatus Yoder, sp. n., S. exophthalmus Yoder, sp. n., S. fremo Valerio & Yoder, sp. n., S. gemo Yoder, sp. n., S. grunnio Yoder, sp. n., S. harinhalai Yoder, sp. n., S. igland Yoder, sp. n., S. impostor Yoder, sp. n., S. irwini Yoder, sp. n., S. janseni Yoder, sp. n., S. latro Yoder, sp. n., S. memorabilis Yoder, sp. n., S. modulus Yoder, sp. n., S. mutio Yoder, sp. n., S. ntchisii Yoder, sp. n., S. parkeri Yoder, sp. n., S. phaeoprora Yoder, sp. n., S. pilosilatus Yoder, sp. n., S. pipilo Yoder, sp. n., S. quasiclypeatus Yoder, sp. n., S. retifrons Yoder, sp. n., S. ructo Yoder, sp. n., S. scomma Yoder, sp. n., S. simoni Yoder, sp. n., S. simonolus Yoder, sp. n., S. somaliensis Yoder, sp. n., S. susurro Yoder, sp. n., S. tono Yoder, sp. n., S. transtrum Yoder, sp. n., S. tritus Yoder, sp. n., S. ululo Yoder, sp. n., S. vannoorti Valerio & Yoder, sp. n. The following species are redescribed: S. afer Kieffer, S. chapmani Nixon, S. howardi Crawford, S. ipomeae Risbec, stat. n., S. mauritanicus Risbec, S. philippinensis Ashmead, S. remaudierei Ferrière, S. striatus Priesner,S. taylori Nixon, and S. zolotarevskyi Ferrière. The genus Lepidoscelio Kieffer is treated as a junior synonym of Scelio Latreille, syn. n.; its type species, Lepidoscelio fuscipennis Kieffer, 1905 is transferred to Scelio, renamed Scelio obscuripennis Johnson, nom. n. (preoccupied by Scelio fuscipennis Ashmead, 1887), and redescribed. The following additional species are transferred from Lepidoscelio to Scelio: S. cayennensis (Risbec), comb. n., S. insularis Ashmead, rev. comb., S. luteus (Cameron), comb. n., S. thoracicus Ashmead, rev. comb. Lectotypes are designated for S. africanus Risbec, S. ipomeae Risbec, S. mauritanicus Risbec, S. remaudierei Ferrière, S. sudanensis Ferrière, and S. zolotarevskyi Ferrière. Scelio gaudens Nixon is a junior synonym of Scelio striatus Priesner, syn. n.; Scelio africanus Risbec and Scelio clarus Fouts are both junior synonyms of Scelio afer Kieffer, syn. n.; Scelio sudanensis Ferrière and Scelio cheops Nixon are both junior synonyms of Scelio zolotarevskyi Ferrière, syn. n.; Scelio cahirensis Priesner is a junior synonym of Scelio mauritanicus Risbec, syn. n. The name Scelio chapmanni Nixon is an incorrect original spelling, requiring an emendation to S. chapmani. This study was performed to determine the biological activity in mice of eight species of Solidago (goldenrod) and to determine some of the chemical groups present in these species. Biologically active substances were present in all of the species tested. Tests of six species were positive for alkaloids. All but one of the species contained demonstrable saponins. All of the species contained tannins, whereas six or seven species were positive for flavonoids. Quaternary bases were not found in any of the species tested. A comparison of the biological activity in mice of these species of Solidago, extracts of which were injected intraperitoneally, showed their descending order of activity to be: (1)S. flexicaulis L., (2)S. hispida Muhl., (3)S. juncea Ait., (4)S. serotina Ait., (5)S. canadensis L., (6)S. rugosa Ait., (7)S. uliginosa Nutt., and (8)S. squarrosa Muhl.  相似文献

In previous work we have shown that puromycin photoaffinity labels two proteins, L23 and S14, from separate sites of high affinity on Escherichia coli ribosomes [Jaynes, E. N., Jr., Grant, P. G., Giangrande, G., Wieder, R., & Cooperman, B. S. (1978) Biochemistry 17, 561-569; Weitzmann, C. J., & Cooperman, B. S. (1985) Biochemistry 24, 2268-2274], that puromycin-modified S14 is separable from native S14 by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), and that ribosomal proteins prepared by RP-HPLC can be reconstituted into active 30S subunits [Kerlavage, A. R., Weitzmann, C. J., & Cooperman, B. S. (1984) J. Chromatogr. 317, 201-212]. In this work we definitively identify puromycin-modified S14 by tryptic fingerprinting, an analysis that also provides evidence that the single tryptophan-containing peptide in S14 is the site of puromycin photoincorporation. We show that reconstituted 30S subunits, in which all of the S14 present is stoichiometrically modified with puromycin and all other ribosomal components are present in unmodified form, lack Phe-tRNAPhe binding activity and further that 70S ribosomes containing such reconstituted 30S subunits have substantially diminished binding activity to both the A and P sites, as differentiated through use of tetracycline. Suitable control experiments strongly indicate that this loss of activity is a direct consequence of puromycin photoincorporation.  相似文献

We have previously described the sequence features of 1500 mouseKIAA (mKIAA) genes in comparison with those of human KIAA genes(Okazaki, N., Kikuno, R., Inamoto, S., Hara, Y., Nagase, T.,Ohara, O., and Koga, H. 2002, DNA Res., 9, 179–188; Okazaki,N., Kikuno, R., Ohara, R., Inamoto, S., Aizawa, H., Yuasa, S.,Nakajima, D., Nagase, T., Ohara, O., and Koga, H. 2003, DNARes., 10, 35–48; Okazaki, N., Kikuno, R., Ohara, R., Inamoto,S., Koseki, H., Hiraoka, S., Saga, Y., Nagase, T., Ohara, O.,and Koga, H. 2003, DNA Res., 10, 167–180; and Okazaki,N., F-Kikuno, R., Ohara, R., Inamoto, S., Koseki, H., Hiraoka,S., Saga, Y., Seino, S., Nishimura, M., Kaisho, T., Hoshino,K., Kitamura, H., Nagase, T., Ohara, O., and Koga, H. 2004,DNA Res., 11, 205–218). To validate the orthologous relationshipbetween mKIAA and KIAA genes in detail, we examined their chromosomalpositions and evolutionary rate of synonymous substitutionsand confirmed that >93% of the mKIAA/KIAA gene pairs areorthologous. During the sequence analysis of mKIAA genes, wefound that 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) lengths of mKIAAand KIAA genes are extremely long. In the meanwhile, we havealso examined the tissue-specific expression of 1700 mKIAA genesusing cDNA microarray and verified predominantly their expressionin adult brain (Koga, H., Yuasa, S., Nagase, T., Shimada, K.,Nagano, M., Imai, K., Ohara, R., Nakajima, D., Murakami, M.,Kawai, M., Miki, F., Magae, J., Inamoto, S., Okazaki, N., Ohara,O. 2004, DNA Res., 11, 293–304). To connect these twoevidences, we statistically analysed the relationship betweenthem by using the mKIAA genes. Consequently, a positive correlationwas observed between the 3'-UTR lengths and the relative expressionintensities in adult brain. Furthermore, we searched sequenceelements in the 3'-UTR possibly related with their expressionand found some candidates regarding the brain-specific expression.  相似文献

In this work we report the synthesis of a radioactive, photolabile oligodeoxyribonucleotide probe and its exploitation in identifying 50S ribosomal subunit components neighboring its target site in 23S rRNA. The probe is complementary to 23S rRNA nucleotides 2497-2505, a single-stranded sequence that has been shown to fall within the peptidyltransferase center of Escherichia coli ribosomes [Cooperman, B. S., Weitzmann, C. J., & Fernandez, C. L. (1990) in The Ribosome: Structure, Function, & Evolution (Hill, W. E., Dahlberg, A., Garrett, R. A., Moore, P. B., Schlesinger, D., & Warner, J. R., Eds.) pp 491-501, American Society of Microbiology, Washington]. On photolysis in the presence of 50S ribosomes, it site-specifically incorporates into protein L3 (identified by both SDS-PAGE and immunological methods) and into three separate 23S rRNA regions: specifically, nucleotides 2454; 2501, 2502, 2505, 2506; and 2583, 2584. These results provide clear evidence that G-2505 in 23S rRNA is within 24 A (the distance between G-2505 and the photogenerated nitrene) of protein L3 and of each of the nucleotides mentioned above and are of obvious importance in the construction of detailed three-dimensional models of ribosomal structure. The approach we present is general and can be applied to determining ribosomal components neighboring regions of rRNA that are susceptible to binding by complementary oligodeoxyribonucleotides, both in intact 30S and 50S subunits and in subunits at various stages of reconstitution.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the data on the oribatid mite fauna of the family Suctobelbidae Grandjean, 1954, recorded from the Caucasus. The distribution of 47 species of the genera Suctobelba Paoli, 1908, Suctobelbella Jacot, 1937, and Suctobelbila Jacot, 1937 in the territory of the Caucasus is shown. The following five new species and four new subspecies are described: Suctobelba cornigera sp. n., S. flagelliseta sp. n., S. scalpellata caucasica ssp. n., Suctobelbella (Suctobelbella) liacariformis sp. n., S. (S.) acutidens pilososetosa ssp. n., S. (S.) subcornigera maculata ssp. n., S. (Flagrosuctobelba) diversosetosa arilloi ssp. n., S. (F.) nana sp. n., and S. (F.) sensillinuda sp. n. Four species belonging to the genus Suctobelbella changed their status: S. (S.) acutidens duplex (Strenzke, 1950) stat. n., S. (S.) acutidens sarekensis (Forsslund, 1941) stat. n., S. (S.) subcornigera vera (Moritz, 1964) stat. n. and S. (Flagrosuctobelba) forsslundi moritzi Mahunka, 1987 stat. n. S. (S.) hammerae (Krivolutsky, 1965) was synonymized to S. (S.) acutidens duplex. The genus Suctobelbila and the species Suctobelbila dentata europaea Moritz, 1974, Suctobelba altvateri Moritz, 1970, S. atomaria Moritz, 1970, S. secta Moritz, 1970, Suctobelbella (S.) acutidens sarekensis, S. (S.) hastata Pankow, 1986, S. (S.) subcornigera vera stat. n., S. (Flagrosuctobelba) ancorhina Chinone, 2003, S. (F.) elegantula (Hammer, 1958), S (F.) flagellifera Chinone, 2003, S (F.) granifera Chinone, 2003, S. (F.) forsslundi moritzi Mahunka, 1987 stat. n., and S. (F.) multiplumosa (Hammer, 1979) are recorded from the Caucasus for the first time. A key to the species is given.  相似文献
