An experiment involving 1360 growing finishing pigs was undertaken to examine the effect of pellet size and pellet quality, as measured by the Holmen pellet durability test, on pig performance. A barley and soya bean meal diet was used and pellets were of two sizes, 5 and 10 mm diameter. Pellet quality was varied to give two types of pellet by steam conditioning and screening procedure during the pelleting process. The mean difference obtained in pellet durability was 11%.

Pig performance between 30 and 80 kg liveweight was not affected by either pellet size or pellet quality. There were small non-significant trends in favour of both the smaller pellets and the lower quality pellets. These trends, of the order of 1% or less, followed the same pattern as the dry matter content of the diets. The smaller diameter pellets were dried more efficiently in the cooling process and the low durability pellets had less steam added during the manufacturing process, which was reflected in the dry matter content of the finished diets.  相似文献

To more closely simulate the diet of free-ranging elephants, the diet of six (2.4) African elephants (Loxodonta africana) was altered to include more browse and less pelleted complete feed (5% total diet). Dietary proximate compounds, minerals, vitamins A (and carotenoids), D and E, and fatty acids were analyzed on pelleted diet items and forages including hay, grass, and browse. A total of 42 browse species were offered over 1 year with an average total diet inclusion of 5.2% (dry matter basis) per day. Dietary Na and Se were low while Fe and Mn were high compared to published intake levels for elephants. Analyzed nutrients within browse varied widely among seasons and species. Ingredient analyses were used to create predicted elephant nutrient intake for (a) the current diet, (b) a diet excluding pellets, and (c) a diet excluding pellets and providing browse at doubled levels. Formulated diets excluding pellets had lower mineral levels than the current diet and doubled browse did not alter mineral inclusions of concern. This study provides seasonal data on the nutrient levels of Southeastern browse species important for various pachyderm and herbivorous species. Predicted nutrient intake with new diet scenarios does not support the exclusion of pellets in the diets of African elephants without greater browse quantity availability, strict diet management, or additional supplements.  相似文献

In young rabbit, digestive disorders are frequently observed around weaning. Stimulating the onset of feed intake in the suckling rabbit might be a way to promote gut health. The aim of this study was to determine the rabbit’s acceptability for different feed presentations and its preferences for flavours at an early stage of life. Two trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of physical form and flavouring on creep feed attractiveness. All the diets tested were provided in the nest from 3 to 17 days, and the daily intake per litter was recorded as of 8 days of age. In the first trial, five feed presentations were tested separately (n = 60 litters). Three dry presentations were chosen: commercial pellet (P), crumb from commercial pellet (cP) and crumb from beet pulp pellet (cBP). Hydrated feeds were also provided with either raw fodder beetroot (B) or a semi-solid feed in agar gel form produced with fodder beetroot juice and pulp (gB). In the second trial, double-choice tests were performed on four feed gels (n = 72 litters), leading to six comparison treatments. These agar gels were made of pellet mash without or with a sensory additive: one non-odorised control gel and three gels with 0.20% banana flavour, 0.06% red berry flavour and 0.10% vanilla flavour, respectively. In the first trial, kits ate more gB in fresh matter than other feed presentations (P < 0.001), with a total intake of 7.0 ± 1.8 g/rabbit from 8 to 17 days. In DM, the total consumption of pellets P (1.6 ± 0.4 g of DM/rabbit) was the highest together with the gB form (1.4 ± 0.4 g of DM/rabbit), whereas cBP was barely consumed (0.3 ± 0.1 g of DM/rabbit). Gel feed supplemented with vanilla was slightly more consumed than other flavoured and non-odorised gels (relative consumption of 57% when compared to control gel; P = 0.001). The gel feed intake was independent of the milk intake but was correlated with the litter weight at 3 days (r = 0.40, P < 0.001). In both trials, rabbit growth before and after weaning was not affected by the type of creep feed provided. Our results confirmed that providing creep feed promotes the solid intake of rabbits at early stages. Gel feed form motivated rabbits to eat and vanilla flavour supplementation increased the feed palatability. Those creep feed characteristics should be explored further for seeking effective stimulation of the onset of the feed intake in suckling rabbit.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of different artificial diets made of powdered seed materials of chickpea ( Cicer arietinum ), soybean ( Glycine max ), and maize ( Zea mays ) on the growth, consumption, and feeding preferences of Helicoverpa armigera larvae. Food consumption and growth of ultimate instar gram pod borer larvae were minimal on maize diet. The nutritive value of the soybean diet was higher, but the consumption rate of larvae was highest on chickpea diet compared with the other test diets. The growth of larvae was statistically equal on chickpea and soybean diets, in spite of differences in the consumption rate of these diets and their nutritive value. There appears to be a direct correlation between the quantity of the diets consumed and their nutritive value for growth of the larvae on chickpea and soybean diets. The lower nutritive value of chickpea diet is correlated with its higher intake by the larvae. Similarly, the lower consumption rate of larvae on soybean diet is correlated with its higher nutritive value. The diet on which the larvae were fed during earlier instars did not induce any feeding preference for that particular diet in the ultimate larval instar. The larvae consumed similar quantities of each of the three diets in their ultimate instar, irrespective of having fed on any of these diets during any preceding instars. However, induction in the quantitative consumption of food by the larvae was evident. The higher or lower consumption rate of diet by the larvae in the ultimate instar was influenced by their food during earlier instars. Hence the food consumption rate of larvae in the last instar appears to be set while feeding on a diet in the preceding instars.  相似文献

There is evidence that opioids may affect food consumption through mechanisms as diverse as reward or energy metabolism. However, these hypotheses are derived from studies employing peripheral or, more rarely, intracerebroventricular administration of drugs. Opioid receptors have a wide distribution in the central nervous system and include a number of regions implicated in food intake such as the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and the central nucleus of the amygdala (ACe). It is not known whether local opioid receptor blockade in either of these regions will produce similar effects on food intake. To examine this issue, a chronic cannula was aimed at either the PVN or ACe of rats that were fed a choice of a high-fat and high-carbohydrate diet, which allows for the measurement of both preference and total energy consumption. Naltrexone influenced preferred and nonpreferred food consumption, depending on the site of administration. Consumption of both preferred and nonpreferred diets was suppressed after PVN naltrexone administration, whereas only preferred diet intake was reduced after ACe injection of naltrexone. The present evidence indicates that direct stimulation of different brain regions with naltrexone may be associated with diverse effects on diet selection, which may be accounted for by manipulation of specific functional neural circuitry.  相似文献

The field slug, Deroceras reticulatum, a common pest of agricultural and horticultural crops, is a generalist herbivore with distinct preferences for particular food items. However, these preferences are not fixed, but are influenced by the recent dietary history of the slugs. In particular, slugs tend to select novel food items ('neophilia'). We investigated the basis of such influences, using artificial diets in which protein and carbohydrate composition could be controlled and non-nutritional ('secondary') chemicals added as flavours. The slugs showed no general inclination for neophilia based on taste alone. There was a possible learned association between protein content and taste, but this was weakly expressed. However, the slugs selected food items, when given a choice, containing nutrients that were deficient in earlier diets, even though all the food items contained the same familiar secondary taste chemicals. Injections of missing nutrients into the haemocoel of slugs inhibited such changes in food preference, indicating that slugs' feeding preferences are influenced directly by their internal nutritional status. We suggest that neophilia in D. reticulatum is a physiological response to a nutritional imbalance arising from a suboptimal diet. Diet analyses are central to the study of avian trophic ecology, and stable isotope analyses have made an increasing contribution in the last two decades. Few isotopic studies have assessed the diet of raptor species, which are more frequently analysed by conventional diet methods such as pellet analysis. In this study, we compare prey consumption estimates of nestling Bonelli's Eagles Aquila fasciata from conventional pellet analysis (in terms of items and biomass) and stable isotopic mixing models (SIAR) using δ13C, δ15N and δ34S of feathers. The pellet analysis showed that European Rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus, pigeons (mainly Common Wood Pigeons Columba palumbus and Domestic Pigeons Columba livia dom.), Red‐legged Partridges Alectoris rufa, passerines, Yellow‐legged Gulls Larus michahellis and Eurasian Red Squirrels Sciurus vulgaris were the main prey, so they were selected for diet reconstructions in SIAR. At the population level, mean prey consumption estimates were similar for pellets (both items and biomass) and SIAR. At the territory level, the weighted kappa statistic showed good ordinal scale agreement in main prey consumption between items or biomass and SIAR. Although the intraclass correlation coefficient showed poor method agreement when considering all prey in the same analysis, the intraclass correlation coefficients for each prey category showed significant agreement between pellets and SIAR when estimating the consumption of Rabbits, pigeons and Gulls, with lower agreement for passerines and Squirrels. Lastly, there was poor method agreement for estimates of Partridges. Our results suggest an overall agreement between the pellet analysis and SIAR when estimating nestling Bonelli's Eagle diet at both the population and, to a lesser extent, the territory level, supporting the usefulness of isotopic mixing models when identifying the terrestrial and marine components of raptor diets.  相似文献

Members of the Bovini genus are classified as grazers. Smaller species of ruminants are not expected to be able to digest particularly fibrous diets and are more often classified as intermediate feeders or browsers. Anoas (Bubalus spp.) are interesting in this respect as they are the smallest representatives of the Bovini, being only 10–20% of the body weight of other species of the same genus. A feeding trial was carried out with four lowland anoas (Bubalus depressicornis) at London Zoo, investigating diet digestibility by total fecal collection and passage rates by the simultaneous administration of a fluid (Co‐EDTA) and a particle (Cr‐mordanted fibre <2 mm) marker. The diet consisted of legume hay, dairy cow pellets, browse, fruits, and vegetables. The achieved digestibility coefficients averaged 70±4% for dry matter and 57±7% for cell walls (NDF). Mean retention times for the total gastrointestinal tract were 25±4.1 hr for fluid and 39±6.7 hr for particles, respectively. The ratio of forestomach particle:fluid retention was 2.14±0.40. Additional information regarding anoa diets in captivity was collected through a survey targeting all institutions that have anoas in their collection currently. Suitability of the provided diet was evaluated using the ratio of unstructured:structured feeds (unstructured feeds pellets, grains, produce; structured feeds=roughage, browse) on a dry matter basis and an assumed complete consumption of offered unstructured diet items, with only the remaining intake capacity being met by structured items. The use of this ratio reliably predicted one facility that reported chronic diet‐related problems. As other ruminants, anoas should receive a diet with restricted amounts of concentrates and fruits. The comparatively high fibre digestibility and the high selective particle retention in the forestomach suggest a classification of an intermediate/grazing ruminant. Twelve mature wethers were used in an experiment of change-over design to determine the effect of complete diet feeding on intake and digestibility of diets based on alkalitreated straw and a concentrate containing rolled barley and extracted soya bean meal. Two diets were used: D1 with a 50:50, and D2 with a 75:25 ratio of straw:concentrates on a dry matter basis. The straw and concentrates of each diet were given either separately (S) or as a complete diet (C). Complete diets gave a slightly, but not significantly higher intake (C, 86.5) and S, 82.5 g dry matter /kg W0.75 per day). The separate method gave a significantly higher digestibility coefficient for dry matter (C, 62.2 and S, 65.5; P < 0.05) and for crude fibre (C, 57.2 and S, 62.5; P < 0.01). Water intake increased by 42.7 ml g?1 Na derived from NaOH. There were no significant interactions between the method of feeding and the type of diet in intake and digestibility of the diets or in the intake of water.  相似文献

Short-term feed preferences were studied in individually caged chickens fed sequentially in order to understand a previously described imbalance in the intake of diets offered. Sequential feeding (SF) was carried out for four 48 h cycles in male broiler chickens. The diets varied in energy (2800 (E−) and 3200 kcal/kg (E+)) and protein (230 (P+) and 150 g/kg (P−)) contents. SF was compared to standard feeding (C) (3000 kcal/kg ME and CP = 190 g/kg). In experiment 1, three treatments were used: C, SE (E− followed by E+) and SE′ (E+ followed by E−). Four treatments were used in experiment 2: C, SP (P+ followed by P−), SE and SEP (P+E− followed by P−E+). Total feed intake was measured during the SF period. After this, short-term preferences were evaluated with a choice test on chickens previously fed with the same feeds during the SF period (experienced birds) and in C chickens (naïve birds). In both experiments, total feed intake was similar among treatments and the percentage of each feed consumed was not significantly different from controls (50%). In experiment 1, SE and SE′ chickens over-consumed E+ and under-consumed E− diets only during the first 15 min of the fourth cycle. The choice test indicated that experienced chickens preferred E+, while naïve chickens preferred E−. Similarly, in experiment 2, chickens over-consumed E+ and E+P− during the first 15 min of the fourth cycle, but the intake of diets varying in protein content was not different from controls. During the choice test, as in experiment 1, experienced chickens preferred E+, while naïve chickens preferred E−. There was a slight preference for the protein-poor diet in naïve birds and there was no preference in the diet varying in both protein and energy contents. Experience modified choice between feeds varying in energy content but not in protein. When feeds were known, preference for energy affected the feed intake immediately after switching from one diet to the other, although lower with the diet also varying in protein, it did not influence the total intake of each diet. Interactions between the nutritional properties and sensorial cues of feed could explain these results.  相似文献

An experimental program investigating the role of gum in the diet of captiveGalago senegalensis braccatus is reviewed. One set of studies investigated the role of gum chemistry in dietary preferences. The animals showed a preference forAcacia gums over gums from other plants. If condensed or hydrolized tannins were added to theAcacia gums, such gums were consumed at a lower rate than plainAcacia gum. This effect was stronger with the condensed (quebracho) tannin. The effect of such secondary compounds on gum consumption in wild galagos needs investigation. The second set of studies examined digestion of gums, which are complex polysaccarides probably requiring fermentation in the gut. Substitution of gum for simple carbohydrate sources in the diet lead to increased gut transit time. On the gum diet, animals maintained weight without an increase in intake or a decrease in activity levels. Apparent dry matter digestibility of the two diets was equivalent. Indicators of gut bacterial action increased on the gum diet. These observations are strong indirect evidence for an increase of fermentation in the gut on the gum diet.  相似文献

The present study is aimed at recording changes in taste preferences and behavior related to testing of artificial agar-agar (2%) pellets with free amino acids (21 amino acids, L-isomers, 0.1–0.001 M) in the carp Cyprinus carpio at increasing duration of starvation (2, 12, 18, 24, 72, and 144 h). Two hours after the end of feeding until satiation, the fish manifest a low foraging activity and, in most cases, they do not grasp the offered pellet. Later on, the feeding motivation in fish increases rapidly and up to 24 h of starvation each of the offered pellets is grasped. In the first hours of starvation the fish refuse from consumption of the grasped pellets even with highly attractive taste stimuli (extract of chironomids, cysteine). Up to 24 h of starvation, the fish restore the differentiated attitude to taste properties of amino acids. Of the latter, four amino acids increase, six decrease, and the other 11 do not render significant influence on consumption of pellets. Up to 72 h of starvation, at the background of continuing increase in the absolute level of consumption of pellets of all types, the taste preferences change but weakly. However, up to 144 h of starvation the number of deterrent amino acids was reduced to one (phenylalanine). At increasing duration of starvation, the number of repeated grasping of pellets changes weakly while duration of testing by fish of pellets of most types increases, especially abruptly in the first 24 h. It is assumed that the decrease or complete loss in fish of the negative reaction to substances, initially having aversive taste properties may be considered as the main mechanism providing expansion of the feeding spectrum and/or transfer of fish onto consumption of new items, initially consumed just occasionally or fully avoided.  相似文献

4 protein sources were tested for palatability, digestibility, influence on bodyweight and consistency of faeces in Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus fuscicollis. The protein sources were incorporated at crude protein levels of 12, 17 and 22% in a pelleted diet. A banana supplement was also fed which reduced the total protein content to 10.7, 14.7 and 18.3%. The test diets, fed for 3 weeks, were well accepted with the milk proteins being slightly preferred. Consumption of the 12% protein pellets was greater than their 22% equivalents. True protein digestibility was calculated to be 97% for lactalbumin, 96% for casein, 90% for soy protein concentrate and 83% for soyabean meal. Changes in bodyweight were negligible. Dry matter of faeces varied between 25% (lactalbumin diets) and 28% (casein diets), but did not change with increasing protein intake. Increasing levels of cellulose, from 2.4 to 7.2% total crude fibre lowered the apparent protein digestibility from 84.3 to 79.2% and the digestibility of dry matter from 82.2 to 76.5%.  相似文献

The future study of colon disease in captive callitrichid colonies may require manipulation of diets. The limited knowledge of the nutritional requirements for these species and the varied diets and supplementations fed to these animals in various colonies suggest the importance of testing the palatability and acceptability of diets for these primates. Individually housed cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) were given either the regular Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) diet (monkey chow slurry, canned diet and supplements), a similar slurry using an experimental natural ingredient diet plus supplements, or the experimental diet without supplements. Neither dry food consumption, body weight, fecal output, nor the histological evaluation of the colons were affected by these diets. Daily intake of protein and calories were higher than previously reported estimates for the species. These results demonstrate that a natural ingredient non-sweetened pelleted diet is palatable for cotton-top tamarins for a period of 3.5 months, however, further testing over longer time periods is necessary. The nonnutritional (e.g. psychological) advantages of providing a highly diverse diet to primates housed in a relatively monotonous environment should be considered before adopting such a diet for an entire colony.  相似文献

Melanic and non-melanic mountain stone weta Hemideina maori (Orthoptera: Anostostomatidae) from the Rock and Pillar Range exhibit differential rates of melanotic encapsulation, a response to the presence of pathogens within the body. Because pathogens normally enter the body via food contamination, we hypothesised that dietary differences between the colour morphs might exist. We used faecal pellet analysis to determine the diet of the mountain stone weta. We then tested for differences between the two colour morphs in overall diet composition and the proportional contribution of invertebrate fragments to faecal pellets. The number of invertebrate fragments to the diet did not differ between the two colour morphs. Only when the plant species that were eaten infrequently were given greater weight in an Analysis of Similarity (ANSOM) did significant differences emerge in the diet of the two colour morphs. Hence, there was a weak but significant difference in the overall composition of their diets, but the ecological significance of this difference is unclear. Experimental studies could be used to determine if the dietary differences shown reflect true feeding preferences, or were due to small-scale differences in food availability or stochastic variation.  相似文献

1. Female Parcoblatta fulvescens feed selectively on diets differing in nutrient content when given a choice during the reproductive cycle. 2. Diets high in carbohydrate and protein content are preferred early in the cycle, while a cellulose-containing diet is readily consumed toward the end of the cycle. 3. The total diet consumed by females given a choice contained about 16% protein, and they did not excrete uric acid while on this diet. 4. Females on diets high in carbohydrate or cellulose required longer to complete the reproductive cycle than females on high-protein diet or those given a dietary choice. 5. Nitrogen-stressed females will consume urate-containing fecal pellets, but only if they have utilizable carbohydrate in their diet.  相似文献

Summary We examined digestibility of dry matter, nutrients, and fiber, and food intake, metabolic fecal losses, weight change, and gut size of pocket gophers (Thomomys bottae) in relation to diet quality in the laboratory. Pocket gophers were maintained for 15–20 days on one of seven diets which contained from 18% to 56% neutral detergent fiber (NDF). NDF content of the diet was an excellent predictor of diet quality. Digestibility of dry matter, NDF, and nitrogen all decreased with increasing NDF content of the diet. In general, pocket gophers compensated for low diet quality by increasing dry matter intake, but those given high quality forage before the lowest quality diet reduced their intake. Thus, the response of pocket gophers to low quality diets may depend on their body condition. Because increased food intake resulted in increased total metabolic fecal losses and metabolic fecal nitrogen losses, decreasing food intake on low-quality diets may be advantageous. A further response of pocket gophers to decreased food quality was an increase in size of cecum and large intestine, suggesting that fermentation of cell walls became increasingly important as diet quality decreased.  相似文献

Background

Relapse to unhealthy eating habits is a major problem in human dietary treatment. The individuals most commonly seeking dietary treatment are overweight or obese women, yet the commonly used rat reinstatement model to study relapse to palatable food seeking during dieting primarily uses normal-weight male rats. To increase the clinical relevance of the relapse to palatable food seeking model, here we pre-expose female rats to a calorically-dense cafeteria diet in the home-cage to make them overweight prior to examining the effect of this diet history on cue-, pellet-priming- and footshock-induced reinstatement of food seeking.

Methods

Post-natal day 32 female Long-Evans rats had seven weeks of home-cage access to either chow only or daily or intermittent cafeteria diet alongside chow. Next, they were trained to self-administer normally preferred 45 mg food pellets accompanied by a tone-light cue. After extinction, all rats were tested for reinstatement induced by discrete cue, pellet-priming, and intermittent footshock under extinction conditions.

Results

Access to daily cafeteria diet and to a lesser degree access to intermittent cafeteria diet decreased food pellet self-administration compared to chow-only. Prior history of these cafeteria diets also reduced extinction responding, cue- and pellet-priming-induced reinstatement. In contrast, modest stress-induced reinstatement was only observed in rats with a history of daily cafeteria diet.

Conclusion

A history of cafeteria diet does not increase the propensity for cue- and pellet-priming-induced relapse in the rat reinstatement model but does appear to make rats more susceptible to footshock stress-induced reinstatement.  相似文献

Effects of dietary nicotine and macronutrient ratio on M. sexta larvae were examined. Larvae were fed a carbohydrate-biased, protein-biased or diet having equal amounts of casein and sucrose, with and without nicotine. Without nicotine, larvae displayed compensatory feeding on the low protein diet, but despite consuming more, grew least on this diet. Nicotine at 0.5% had no effect on nutrient consumption. Nicotine at 1.0 and 2.0% reduced overall consumption and thereby also reduced nicotine consumption. Larvae parasitized by C congregata displayed reduced nutrient intake and growth on all diets. Parasitized larvae responded to 1% nicotine similarly to unparasitized larvae. At 0.5% nicotine, they displayed reduced consumption on all diets, possibly due to altered chemoreceptor sensitivity to nicotine. When offered a choice of two diets having different macronutrient ratios, one with and the other without 0.1% nicotine, all larvae preferred the diet lacking nicotine and failed to regulate nutrient intake such that the nutrient intake target, a ratio of nutrients supporting optimal growth, was achieved. Parasitized larvae consumed less nicotine on a fresh weight basis than unparasitized insects, suggesting that the feeding response of parasitized larvae to nicotine minimizes the exposure of nicotine to developing parasites.  相似文献

In captivity, langurs (foregut fermenting primates) often suffer from digestive disorders, and in particular display soft stools on diets with a high proportion of fruits, vegetables, and grain products. In this study, we tested whether the improvement in feces consistency expected after an omission of vegetables from a conventional diet was also accompanied by a change in the excretion pattern as measured by the mean retention time (MRT). Two adult Javan langurs were kept together and offered a conventional diet of pellets, browse, vegetables, or a diet consisting of pellets and browse only. MRT were measured with cobalt-EDTA as the fluid and chromium oxide as the particle marker before, during, and after the test diet, collecting the feces of both animals together. MRTs of fluids and particles were longer (47/49 h) on the test diet as compared to the usual diet (42/43 h). Feces consistency improved during the test period. The test period was marked by an increased fiber intake; however, on the conventional diet, dietary water intake exceeded the calculated water flux for these animals distinctively, due to the high proportion of vegetables. Therefore, it cannot be decided whether the increase of fiber level alone or also a reduction of the excessive water intake was responsible for the changes observed. Comparing the results of this study to other studies on ingesta retention in foregut fermenting primates, no correlation between the body mass of the animals and the MRTs measured is evident, which is in accordance with observations in other groups of foregut fermenters.  相似文献
