The structure and development of the paired eyes of the larva of Kronborgia isopodicola were studied by electron microscopy. Each ocellus, located anterolateral to the brain, is of the inverse rhabdomeric type. A supportive cell contains 10–12 rows of concentrically arranged crystalline plates forming a cup-shaped reflective structure (mirror), the opening of which faces laterally. Three large dendritic processes penentrate the opening and each terminates in a rhabdomere. The cell body of each dendrite lies slightly behind the margin of the mirror cell. Cytoplasmic extensions of the supportive/mirror cell project across the opening, interposing between the dendritic processes. A secretory process (possibly neurosecretory) passes in front of the eyecup in contact with dendritic processes and the extensions of the supportive cell. Reflective layers consisting of rows of crystalline platelets are widely distributed in the animal kingdom, but among the Platyhelminthes this type of reflective ocellus has previously been reported only from Polystomatidae (Monogenea).  相似文献

Larvae of Poecilochaetus serpens, Trochochaeta multisetosum and Polydora ciliata possess almost identical unpigmented, ciliary, presumptive light sensitive organs within the prostomium. The data corroborate hypotheses on the close relationship of Poecilochaetidae, Trochochaetidae and Spionidae and are even congruent with inclusion of Poecilochaetidae and Trochochaetidae within Spionidae. The organs in P. serpens, T. multisetosum and P. ciliata are composed of one monociliary receptor cell, one supportive cell and several associated flask shaped bipolar sensory cells. The receptor cell cilium enters the supportive cell cavity through a thin pore, dilates and then branches into a high number of disordered projections. The associated sensory cells bear one or occasionally two cilia, which run horizontally beneath or within the cuticle. The supportive cell cavity is not sealed by any cell contact from the subcuticular extracellular space. The organs in Magelona mirabilis are composed of a single supportive cell, but several receptor cells. No further sensory cells are associated. Each receptor cell sends one cilium into an own invagination of the supportive cell, and the ciliary branches are highly ordered. The examined organs in P. serpens, T. multisetosum and P. ciliata exhibit a unique organization amongst polychaetes. The organs of M. mirabilis are most probably homologous. A homology to ciliary organs of Protodrilida is conceivable. In the lineage leading to Protodrilida, primary larval organs may have been integrated into the adult body organization by heterochrony.  相似文献

Polystoma sodwanensis n. sp. andMetapolystoma porosissimae n. sp. are described as new species of the Polystomatidae parasitic in the urinary bladder of adultPtychadena porosissima collected in northern Natal, South Africa. Of 26 frogs examined, 11 host individuals were infected with one of the two parasite species, while in five both parasite species occurred. This is the first record of two different genera of polystomatids occurring together in one host species and the first record ofMetapolystoma in South Africa. The exceptional nature of the reported double infection is discussed in terms of host specificity within the Polystomatidae. Polystoma testimagna n. sp. is described as a new species of the Polystomatidae, parasitic in the urinary bladder of the striped stream frog Strongylopus f. fasciatus collected in the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve, Natal, South Africa. Parasite prevalence was found to be 50.0% and 27.7% in two successive years, and the mean intensity was 1.5 and 1.6, respectively. The species occurs together with another Polystoma species in the same water body and within one kilometre from a third species. Aspects of host specificity are discussed and data on the ecology and distribution of the host presented.  相似文献

Summary The ocelli of trochophore and segmented larvae of the archiannelid Polygordius cf. appendiculatus were studied by electron microscopy. An eye consists of two pigmented supportive cells forming an eyecup that encloses one sensory cell bearing one (trochophore) or two (segmented larva) ranks of microvilli and one adventitious cilium. Remarkably abundant tubules (submicrovillar endoplasmic reticulum) radiate from the perinuclear region of the sensory cell, which lies outside the ocellus, toward its receptoral end. Possible functions of the tubules are proposed: carriers of ions, metabolites and photopigments; pinocytic uptake of products resulting from photoreception; storage of membrane; and light guides. Finally, the eyes of Polygordius larvae are believed to have evolutionary significance and provide further support for Eakin's theory of diphyletic origin of photoreceptors.  相似文献

Summary The effects of light and dark on photoreceptors of the brackish-water polychaete annelid Nereis Hmnicola were studied by electron microscopy. Animals dark-adapted for one or two days exhibited well-formed straight microvilli (rhabdomeres) on the sensory cell processes. Continuous illumination of worms for one or two days caused extensive breakdown of the microvilli into vesicles and debris. Thirty minutes to three h of exposure of dark-adapted animals to light produced increasing severity of degradation of photoreceptoral microvilli. Light-adapted worms placed in darkness for one-half to three h showed progressive restoration of the microvilli to the dark-adapted condition. The products of degradation were internalized by both sensory and pigmented supportive cells by phagocytosis and pinocytosis.  相似文献

Photoinhibition is a state of physiological stress that occurs in all oxygen evolving photosynthetic organisms exposed to light. The primary damage occurs within the reaction center of Photosystem II (PS II). While irreversible photoinduced damage to PS II occurs at all light intensities, the efficiency of photosynthetic electron transfer decreases markedly only when the rate of damage exceeds the rate of its repair, which requires de novo PS II protein synthesis. Photoinhibition has been studied for over a century using a large variety of biochemical, biophysical and genetic methodologies. The discovery of the light induced turnover of a protein, encoded by the plastid psbA gene (the D1 protein), later identified as one of the photochemical reaction center II proteins, has led to the elucidation of the underlying mechanism of photoinhibition and to a deeper understanding of the PS II `life cycle.' A detailed study of spermatogenesis in a homosporous fern, Onoclea sensibilis L., is presented from the formation of the first spermatogenous cell to the release of the sperm. Two different walls are deposited around the developing spermatids at specific developmental stages as opposed to one wall reported for other species. Most ultrastructural changes that occur in Onoclea during spermatid differentiation resemble those described in previous studies on other fern species, with the following exceptions: 1) A previously undescribed structure appears during midspermatid stage. This dense layer of amorphous material with a row of evenly spaced light areas occurs between the anterior portion of the mitochondrion associated with the multilayered structure and the anterior plasmalemma of the spermatid. 2) An early stage in blepharoplast formation resembles that which occurs in the heterosporous fern Marsilea, in contrast to that which has been reported in Platyzoma, the only other homosporous fern studied at this stage. 3) The osmiophilic crest does not form as early as reported in other ferns. 4) The cap cell of Onoclea is removed intact, rather than collapsing or forming a pore during sperm release. Observations are reported on the number of sperm per antheridium, the time course of spermatogenous cell mitosis, and of differentiation of spermatids into sperm. In Onoclea, an antheridium may contain either 32 or 64 sperm. Regardless of the final number of sperm, each has approximately the same volume.  相似文献

Leaf development is affected by both internal (genetic) and external (environmental) regulatory factors. The aim of this work was to investigate how leaf growth variables are related to one another in a range of environments. The leaf growth variables of wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana and leaf development mutants (ang4, ron2-1, elo1, elo2 and elo4) were studied under different incident light treatments (light and shade). The leaves studied were altered in various leaf development variables, such as the duration of expansion, relative and absolute expansion rates, epidermal cell size, epidermal cell number and initiation rate. Final leaf area was correlated to maximal absolute leaf expansion rate and cell number, but not to duration of leaf expansion or cell size. These relationships were common to all studied genotypes and light conditions, suggesting that leaf size is determined early in development. In addition, the early variables involved in leaf development were correlated to one another, and initial relative expansion rate was negatively correlated to the duration of expansion. These relationships between the leaf development variables were used to construct a conceptual model of leaf size control.  相似文献

Schizaea pusilla is a rare fern that occurs in acidic bogs and is one of the few fern species that maintains a filamentous gametophyte throughout its development. To expand our knowledge of the physiology of this fern, phototropic responses were examined in young gametophytes. In contrast to germ filaments of other fern species, apical protonemata of young gametophytes are negatively phototropic in continuous white, red and blue light at all fluence rates tested. The expression of phototropic curvature is not limited by time since apical protonemata are also negatively phototropic when they are given brief exposures of light and then placed in the dark. In other lower plant groups such as mosses and some algae, the direction of phototropic curvature can change depending on light quality and intensity, but in young gametophytes of Schizaea, negative phototropic curvature was observed in all conditions studied. Blue light is the most effective in promoting the negative phototropic response in Schizaea.  相似文献

Summary The precise geometry of pro-centriole formation has been studied inPhysarum polycephalum amoebae. The spatial references used were the posterior and the anterior kinetosomes which are unequivocally defined by the presence of the posterior para-kinetosomal structure, the microtubular array 4 and the microtubular arrays 1, 2, and 3. The observations made suggest that pro-centrioles follow a maturation process. A pro-centriole formed during the nth cell cycle becomes the posterior kinetosome during the (n + 1)th cell cycle and the anterior one during all the following cell cycles. Pro-centriole formation occurs late in the cell cycle. This observation disagrees with a role of pro-centriole formation in the regulation of S phase in contrast to what has been suggested in other eucaryotic cells.  相似文献

Classical light microscopic studies on pigmentation of Fundulus heteroclitus (killifish) indicated that there are three groups of light reflecting cells; one group on the surface of scales reflects white light, while two other deeper groups (the melaniridophores and the stratum argenteum) are iridescent. The results presented here show that: (1) The scale leucophores reflect white light by a Tyndall light-scattering mechanism, by virtue of the presence of randomly oriented organelles of “novel” morphology. (2) The iridophores of the melaniridophores contain stacks of irregularly-spaced, large reflecting platelets which function as an imperfect multiple thin layer interference system. (3) The stratum argenteum consists of a continuous layer(s) of iridophores with reflecting platelets which are so regularly packed as to approach an ideal multiple thin layer interference system. (4) In all three types of light reflecting cells, the dimensions and packing (orientation) of the reflecting organelles satisfactorily account for the chromogenic properties of the cells, including colors as viewed under transmitted, reflected, or polarized light. (5) The spacial relationships between these light reflecting cells and adjoining melanophores are different for each type of light reflecting cell. Furthermore, we propose to replace the term reflecting platelet with refractosome.  相似文献

The pineal-paraphyseal complex of sea turtles is an impressively large structure which projects dorsally and anteriorly above the prosencephalon. The complex was examined by light microscopy in several age classes of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and from juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). The paraphysis is extensively fused to the distal portion of the pineal body, suggesting an interrelated function for these two tissues. No duct or canal was observed connecting the pineal lumen to the third ventricle. Two pineal cell types are described which appear to correspond to the neuroglial supportive cells and the secretory rudimentary photoreceptor cells of other amniotic vertebrates. A possible luminal secretion in the form of apical protrusions is produced by the latter cell type. No typical photoreceptive outer segments were observed.  相似文献

Abstract. This study attempts to show the dynamics of the canopy structure of the Mediterranean pioneer shrub Lavandula stoechas after man-made perturbation (i.e. grazing). The development of the vertical structure of the shrub was studied by harvesting the canopy of plants of 2–6 yr old in horizontal layers. The supportive biomass of the canopy was concentrated near the base at all ages. Leaf biomass was evenly distributed all over the vertical profile in 2- and 3-yr old plants. In 4-yr old plants it presented a maximum near the top of the canopy. For 5-yr old plants a structural transition started with leaf profiles showing a bimodal distribution. Leaf biomass predominated near the base in 6-yr old plants, suggesting that the transition was completed. Three canopy stages in the growth processes of the plant were recognized after the first year of growth: in the first one (from 2 to 3 yr old) both leaf and supportive biomass increased; in the second one (from 3 to 4 yr) leaf biomass remained stable and there was an increase in supportive biomass until the plants reached a ‘mature stage’, in 4-yr old plants; finally, in 5- and 6-yr old plants there was a decrease both in leaf and supportive biomass and plant structure showed evidence of senescence. Early transitions from seedling to 1-yr old plant and from this to 2- to 3-yr old plants were less obvious. The leaf/supportive biomass ratio always decreased with plant age, from 1.88 in seedlings to 0.01 in 6-yr old plants. Biomass density followed the pattern of supportive biomass, with an increase from 1.7 g/dm3 (2-yr old plants) to 2.4 g/dm3 (4-yr old plants). Thereafter, biomass density decreased to 0.6 g/dm3 (6-yr old plants).  相似文献

The proboscis musculature was studied in the nemertean Baseodiscus delineatus using confocal laser scanning and electron transmission microscopy. Three muscle layers were differentiated in the proboscis wall: the outer-longitudinal, the diagonal, and the inner-circular layer. The endothelium consists of two cell types: apical supportive cells with rudimentary cilia and subapical myocytes making up the inner-circular musculature of the proboscis. The supportive cells have thin processes attached to the basal extracellular matrix and their perikarya are spread over the apical surfaces of myocytes. The endothelium of B. delineatus is characterized by a folded basal layer of the extracellular matrix and by different heights of myocyte processes, giving an impression that the inner-circular musculature is multilayered. Comparative analysis shows that the diagonal musculature of Baseodiscus is not homologous to that of other heteronemerteans. An assumption is made that the inner-circular muscles have endothelial origin in all heteronemerteans.  相似文献

The phylogenetic position of Orbiniidae within Annelida is unresolved. Conflicting hypotheses place them either in a basal taxon Scolecida, close to Spionida, or in a basal position in Aciculata. Because Aciculata have a specific type of eye, the photoreceptive organs in the orbiniid Scoloplos armiger were investigated to test these phylogenetic hypotheses. Two different types of prostomial photoreceptor‐like sense organs were found in juveniles and one additional in subadults. In juveniles there are four ciliary photoreceptor‐like phaosomes with unbranched cilia and two pigmented eyes. The paired pigmented eyes lie beside the brain above the circumoesophageal connectives. Each consists of one pigmented cell, one unpigmented supportive cell and three everse rhabdomeric sensory cells with vestigial cilia. During development the number of phaosomes increases considerably and numerous unpigmented sense organs appear consisting of one rhabdomeric photoreceptor cell and one supportive cell. The development and morphology of the pigmented eyes of S. armiger suggest that they represent miniaturized eyes of the phyllodocidan type of adult eye rather than persisting larval eyes resulting in small inverse eyes typical of Scolecida. Moreover, the structure of the brain indicates a loss of the palps. Hence, a closer relationship of Orbiniidae to Phyllodocida is indicated. Due to a still extensive lack of ultrastructural data among polychaetes this conclusion cannot be corroborated by considering the structure of the unpigmented ciliary and rhabdomeric photoreceptor‐like sense organs. Polystoma macrocnemis n. sp. (Polystomatidae) is described from the urinary bladder of Rana macrocnemis (Ranidae) in Turkey. The proximal, intermediate, and distal convoluted tubules of the neprhon of Podarcis (= Lacerta) taurica were examined by electron microscopy. Proximal tubule cells have large, apical cytoplasmic protrusions and microvilli interpreted to function in urate secretion. Adjacent cells are bound apically by tight junctions and desmosomes but interdigitate in their basal region. This situation is repeated in the other tubules with significant differences in intercellular space width. The basal surfaces bear numerous cytoplasmic processes. The intermediate tubule has proximal and distal segments each with dark, ciliated, and light cells, the cuboidal dark cells with dense cytoplasm constituting the main bulk of the wall. As the cells of the proximal and distal segments resemble those of the proximal and distal convoluted tubules, respectively, the intermediate tubule is considered as a transition region. The ciliated cell body has two broad processes extending from the lumen, one to the basement membrane and one to a foot process of a light cell. The light cell is surrounded by dark and ciliated cells. It does not reach the lumen, but contacts the basement membrane through a process running below a ciliated cell to form a mushroom-shaped structure in tubule cross-section, the light cell process forming the stalk and a ciliated cell the cap. The cilia probably propel the glomerular filtrate towards the distal convoluted tubule. This latter tubule has initial, middle, and terminal zones, all nonciliated but with different lumen widths and cell shapes.  相似文献

Polystoma fuscus n. sp. (Polystomatidae, Polystomatinae) is described from the urinary bladder of Pelobates fuscus (Pelobatidae) in Bulgaria. Its general morphology is similar to that of other members of the genus but distinguished from them by the underdeveloped hamuli similar to the larval hamular primordia. The new species is also differentiated from the members of the genera of the subfamily Polystomatinae described without hamuli.  相似文献

This study investigated and compared the morphology of the electrosensory system of three species of benthic rays. Neotrygon trigonoides, Hemitrygon fluviorum and Maculabatis toshi inhabit similar habitats within Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Like all elasmobranchs, they possess the ability to detect weak electrical fields using their ampullae of Lorenzini. Macroscopically, the ampullary organs of all three species are aggregated in three bilaterally paired clusters: the mandibular, hyoid and superficial ophthalmic clusters. The hyoid and superficial ophthalmic clusters of ampullae arise from both dorsal and ventral ampullary pores. The dorsal pores are typically larger than the ventral pores in all three species, except for the posterior ventral pores of the hyoid grouping. Ampullary canals arising from the hyoid cluster possessed a quasi‐sinusoidal shape, but otherwise appeared similar to the canals described for other elasmobranchs. Ultrastructure of the ampullae of Lorenzini of the three species was studied using a combination of light, confocal and electron microscopy. All possess ampullae of the alveolar type. In N. trigonoides and M. toshi, each ampullary canal terminates in three to five sensory chambers, each comprising several alveoli lined with receptor and supportive cells and eight to 11 sensory chambers in H. fluviorum. Receptor cells of all three species possess a similar organization to those of other elasmobranchs and were enveloped by large, apically nucleated supportive cells protruding well into the alveolar sacs. The luminally extended chassis of supportive cells protruding dramatically into the ampullary lumen had not previously been documented for any elasmobranch species.  相似文献
