Food composition of Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis has been considered in three areas of the northwestern Pacific: in the western part of the Bering Sea, in Pacific waters off the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka, and waters off the southern Kuril Islands. The main food items in all studied regions were shrimp, cephalopods, and fish. It has been noted that fish offal plays a considerable role in the feeding of H. stenolepis in the western part of the Bering Sea. Changes in food composition in relation to fish growth, depth of catch, and sex of individuals have been analyzed; and differences in the composition of food items consumed by H. stenolepis in different parts of the studied areas have been considered.  相似文献

Pacific halibut collected in the Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska were used to test the hypothesis of genetic panmixia for this species in Alaskan marine waters. Nine microsatellite loci and sequence data from the mitochondrial (mtDNA) control region were analyzed. Eighteen unique mtDNA haplotypes were found with no evidence of geographic population structure. Using nine microsatellite loci, significant heterogeneity was detected between Aleutian Island Pacific halibut and fish from the other two regions (F ST range = 0.007–0.008). Significant F ST values represent the first genetic evidence of divergent groups of halibut in the central and western Aleutian Archipelago. No significant genetic differences were found between Pacific halibut in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea leading to questions about factors contributing to separation of Aleutian halibut. Previous studies have reported Aleutian oceanographic conditions at deep inter-island passes leading to ecological discontinuity and unique community structure east and west of Aleutian passes. Aleutian Pacific halibut genetic structure may result from oceanographic transport mechanisms acting as partial barriers to gene flow with fish from other Alaskan waters.  相似文献

Despite almost a hundred years of studies on the Pacific cod’s biological and ecological peculiarities, many of them and especially population structure remain poorly understood. The variability of DNA microsatellite loci Gmo3, Gmo34, Gmo35, Pgmo32, and Gmo 19 was analyzed for the cod sampled in different areas of the North Pacific. The cod sampled nearby the Southern Kurils, differed significantly by Gmo3 and Pgmo32 compared to the populations inhabiting the Bering Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk and the coastal waters off Canada. Further, Pacific cod of the three latter populations demonstrated high similarity (I = 0.996) in spite of considerable geographic remoteness of these areas from one another.  相似文献

Data on new captures of juveniles of the yellow anglerfish Lophius litulon off the Southern Kurils are presented. Outer morphological characters of the specimens caught in waters off the Southern Kurils are described in comparison with those of specimens from other regions of the north-western part of the Pacific Ocean. Probable pathways of penetration of anglerfish (Lophiidae) to Russian Far East waters are discussed.  相似文献

Based on materials of trawl studies performed from 1992 to 2002 off the Pacific coast of Kamchatka and the northern Kuril Islands in the framework of the integrated (VNIRO, KamchatNIRO, Sakh-NIRO) program on the study of fishery resources of the continental slope, data on the distribution and biology of rock greenling Hexagrammos lagocephalus were analyzed. It was elucidated that this species is extremely eurybathic; the range of its seasonal vertical migrations embraces depths of 1–2 m in summer, and in the spawning period and up to 665 m in winter. The spatial distribution has a mosaic pattern, maximum concentrations were recorded at the slope and shelf of the Shumshu Island and the southern extremity of Kamchatka. The size, weight, and sex composition, and the maturation and feeding of the rock greenling are considered. Maximum fish sizes in trawl catches are 58 cm and 2.63 kg; sex composition is characterized by the domination of females in all size groups (79%). The bulk of feeding consisted of Cephalopoda, small crustaceans—Amphipoda and Isopoda—as well as the eggs of fish and Gastropoda. With an increase in sizes, the greenling passes from feeding on small benthic organisms to larger movable forms.  相似文献

Based on materials of 1992–2002, data on the spatial-bathymetric distribution and size-age composition of blotched snailfish Crystallichthys mirabilis and species accompanying it in catches in Pacific waters off the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka are presented. This relatively large representative of the family Liparidae (maximum length in catches 50 cm, body weight 2150 g) is found throughout the examined area in the depth interval of 76–755 m at near-bottom temperature of ?1.2 to +4.2°C. Maximum catches (over 200–500 individuals or 180–280 kg per hour trawling) year round are recorded off the southeastern extremity of Kamchatka, from the oceanic side of the Shumshu and Paramushir islands and on the beam of the Fourth Kuril Strait in the bathymetric range of 151–350 m. The magnitude of its catches in the examined area is subjected to interannual, seasonal, and diurnal dynamics.  相似文献

Diet of Albatrossia pectoralis in spring 2009 is investigated in bottom ichthyocenes of the continental slope from south-eastern Kamchatka to the southern Kurils. The food spectrum of Albatrossia pectoralis comprises over 50 prey species. The bulk of the food consists of cephalopods and fish. In the course of ontogenetic change of diet, Albatrossia pectoralis passes over from nektobenthophagy in the initial period of its near-bottom life (30–60 cm) to nektophagy. Prey of Albatrossia pectoralis are principally organisms of the grazing chain. Due to predominant participation in the grazing chain, Albatrossia pectoralis is a dominant predator in bottom ichthyocenes of the Kamchatka-Kuril continental slope.  相似文献

The population structure of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus in the southern part of the range and adjacent regions is studied on the basis of the results of microsatellite analyses. Collected data indicate heterogeneity of this species population within the studied area. According to the obtained FST values, Pacific cod from the waters of the Republic of Korea (Yellow Sea side) and northwestern part of the Sea of Okhotsk significantly differ from all other studied regions (Table 4). Significant differentiation was also revealed between samples from the waters of the Tatar Strait and all other regions except for South Kurils Pacific cod (both Sea of Okhotsk and Pacific Ocean sides). These two latter sample collections were similar to each other as well. A low level of differentiation was also shown for the Peter the Great Bay and the East Sea/Sea of Japan waters of the Republic of Korea.  相似文献

Data on the spatiotemporal distribution, size-age structure, individual fecundity, and food composition of the Pacific sand lance Ammodytes hexapterus in waters off Kamchatka in the Sea of Okhotsk in the summer months are provided. It is shown that, on the western Kamchatka shelf, this species is found uniformly at depths smaller than 100 m in the range of temperatures from ?0.83 to 9.45°C. Maximum catches (more than one to three thousand individuals per hour of trawling) are constantly recorded locally in the central part of the shelf (52°–56°N) in a comparatively narrow range of depths 20–60 m at temperatures of 1.5–8.0°C, mainly on sandy and sandy-pebbly grounds, which is related to a specific behavioral feature of A. hexapterus such as burrowing itself into the ground. It was established that in waters off Kamchatka in the Sea of Okhotsk, maximum sizes of A. hexapterus are 27 cm and 54 g (although its individuals with a length of 18–24 cm and a body weight of 20–40 g occur more frequently in catches); individual fecundity varies from 9.9 to 59.9 (on average, 29.7) thousand eggs. It was shown that, in waters off Kamchatka in the Sea of Okhotsk, unlike other habitats, the main food items of A. hexapterus (more than 95% by weight), besides copepods, are pelagic tunicates Oikopleura sp. and larval decapods at the megalope stage. With an increase in the size of A. hexapterus, the proportion of the former in its food decreases and, of the latter, increases.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus was studied. Samples from six regions of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea were analyzed with two mtDNA genetic markers-gene of cytochrome 1 and the control region (D-loop). Comparative analysis showed significant genetic differentiation between the two groups of samples. The first group included samples from Tauiskaya Bay and waters of Western Kamchatka. The second group consisted of the samples collected in the waters of the Iturup Island (Sea of Okhotsk), Northern Kurile Islands, Navarin region of the Bering Sea, and Anadyr Bay.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of studies on the morphology of arrowhead flounders, the Kamchatka flounder Atheresthes evermanni (35 specimens), and the American arrowtooth flounder A. stomias (37 specimens) collected in Pacific waters of the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka in 1998–1999. The morphology of the discussed species is compared with that of arrowtooth flounders from other areas. From this comparison, available information on the sharp increase in the density of the American arrowtooth flounder in the surveyed area (since 1997), and similarities in size compositions of the fish in Kuril and Aleutian waters, a conclusion has been made about the penetration of this species from Aleutian Pacific waters into the area of the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka. This is a result of expansion of the geographical range of this species due to general water warming in the northwestern Pacific during the second half of the 1990s.  相似文献

New data on fecundity, sex ratio in different size groups, and the rate of sexual maturation of shortspine thornyhead Sebastolobus alascanus in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean are provided. Individual absolute fecundity of the studied females varies in the range of 175 000–821000 (on average, 392500) eggs. In Pacific waters off the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka, among individuals with a length to 41 cm, males dominate; in size groups of 42–59 cm, sex ratio is almost equal; among larger fish, females prevail. In the western part of the Bering Sea among analyzed fish with a length to 44 cm, sex ratio is almost equal; among larger individuals, females dominate. Half of males and females of shortspine thornyhead off the eastern coast of the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka mature at a length of approximately 41 cm that can be recommended as a commercial size for the given species in this area.  相似文献

The results of ichthyoplankton surveys conducted in 2007–2008 showed that waters off Southwest Kamchatka and North Kuril Islands were areas of mass spawning of walleye pollock. The peak spawning occurred during the last 10 days of April and in early May, which was much later than the peak at the main spawning site off West Kamchatka. The spawning activity of walleye pollock near the southwestern shores of Kamchatka is a regular event, as the analysis of archive materials shows. This gave us grounds to suspect the existence of a southern site that coincided well with the mass spawning in the Shelikhov Gulf in its timing and scale, but was missed during standard ichthyoplankton surveys conducted in early April. After analyzing the growth rates of spawners, the assumption was made that the southern spawning was performed by the East Kamchatkan walleye pollock population, whose mass spawning usually occurs in late April-early May. According to the data of 2008, the estimated biomass of walleye pollock spawning in the area of the Ozernovskaya basin in late April was nearly 600000 tons. Regular monitoring of the southern spawning is proposed by means of additional ichthyoplankton surveys south of 53° N, including the Okhotsk Sea waters of the North Kuril Islands, in late April—early May.  相似文献

The biological characteristics of the giant grenadier Albatrossia pectoralis and its spatial and vertical distribution of catches are considered based on the results of experimental fisheries of the deepwater fishes by the bottom traps in four regions of Russian far-eastern waters (Pacific waters of the south-eastern coast of Kamchatka, western part of the Bering Sea, ridge of Shirshov, waters around the Commander Islands). Changing of the catch sizes depending on the depth of fishing, soak time, and fishing area is analyzed; the questions concerned with eating away of fishes by amphipods (Amphipoda) are considered.  相似文献

The discovery of genetic markers linked to physiological traits in wild populations is increasingly desired for ecological and evolutionary studies, as well as to inform management decisions. However, identifying such markers often requires a large investment of both time and money. Serendipitously, in a recent microsatellite survey, we discovered three out of 16 microsatellite loci that were correlated to the female sex in Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis). These three loci were screened in 550 Pacific halibut to determine their accuracy at identifying sex. Genetic assignment successfully identified sex in 92% of individuals from sample collections spanning 3,000 km and 9 years. All but two of 287 females had one copy of a characteristic allele for at least one of the three microsatellite loci, resulting in consistent heterozygote excess in females. This pattern is consistent with the hypothesis that females are the heterogametic sex in Pacific halibut, which thus may have a different sex-determination pattern than the closely related Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus). A rapid divergence of sex-determining mechanisms could be either a cause or consequence of speciation between Pacific and Atlantic halibut. In either case, the ability to genetically identify sex in individual Pacific halibut provides a new tool for ecological studies, fisheries management, and insight into the evolution of sex determination in flatfish.  相似文献

The results of the investigations of spatial and vertical distribution of Pacific sleeper shark Somniosus pacificus in the North Pacific Ocean conducted for many years are presented. In addition, the size distribution and features of biology of the species are studied. The largest abundance of the species is registered in the Bering Sea, western Gulf of Alaska, eastern Aleutian Islands, and Pacific waters of northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka. The species is the most abundant near the bottom at the depth from 200 to 700 m and in the pelagic waters at a depth of 100–200 m. The average depths of the catches of Pacific sleeper shark substantially change over the year reaching minimum values in June and maximum values in December. Vertical daily migrations (to the water column at night and to the bottom during the day) are registered. The catches are represented by fish 26–352 cm in length, and sharks 100–200 cm in length prevail. The males are noticeably smaller than the females. In general, condition of the fishes decreases and feeding intensity increases with growth. Food composition substantially changes with the increase of body length: consumption of squids decreases and consumption of crustaceans, fishes, and fishery wastes increases. The food composition is slightly different in the females and males.  相似文献

The three species of flying fishes—Indo-Pacific Cypselurus poecilopterus, Central Pacific C. simus, and Eastern Pacific C. callopterus form a particular species group within the subgenus Poecilocypselurus. These species rather weakly differ in the body height, number of predorsal scales and number of gill rakers. The sculls of these three species are very much alike; there are just very small differences in the proportions of some bones and the number of skull lateral line canals and pores. It could be imagined that C. poecilopterus has appeared in the Indo-Malayan Archipelago area and thence extended in all directions (up to the coasts of the Eastern Africa, Northern and Eastern Australia, New Guinea and adjacent islands, the western islands of Polynesia and the waters of Japan). C. callopterus inhabiting warm waters of the Eastern Pacific and C. simus whose area is situated in the central part of the Pacific Ocean are seemingly derived from this species.  相似文献

The results of long-term studies of the spatial distribution, size composition, and spawning intensity of the Pacific saury Cololabis saira in open waters of the North Pacific Ocean and the northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of North America are presented. In the open waters of the Pacific Ocean, saury forms aggregations early in summer; intraseasonal changes in their distribution pattern have been identified. Migrations of Pacific saury stocks in the northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean were considered, and assumptions about their causes were made. The differences in the size composition of Pacific saury in different parts of the range are associated with the peculiarities of occurrence of favorable conditions for the formation of aggregations. Intensive spawning of Pacific saury in the northeastern part of the Pacific Ocean is observed in winter and spring, and that in open waters is observed in summer. The distribution of the early progeny of Pacific saury is associated with the systems of currents; its findings in the extreme northern regions in the 1980s are explained.  相似文献

According to materials of trap, long-line, and trawl fishing, specific features of distribution of sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria and some of its biological characteristics in Pacific waters off the southeastern coast of Kamchatka, continental slope of the western part of the Bering Sea, Shirshov Underwater Ridge, and off the Commander Islands are considered. Maximum density concentrations according to data of trap fishing was noted along southeastern coast of Kamchatka and the data of trawl fishing indicated most frequent catches in the western part of the Bering Sea in the area of Koryak coast up to Cape Navarin. The pattern of vertical distribution in different areas considerably differs. The magnitude of trap catches in different areas is different and determined by the type of trap and the period of soaking. The size composition, fatness, and the sex ratio are different in catches of different fishing gear and differ between regions. On the whole, in Russian Far Eastern waters, females mature in mass at a body length of 71 cm and males at 57 cm.  相似文献
