There is evidence that the transient channel of temporal human vision behaves as a linear filter for small excursions around a steady background level. The linear filter characteristics depend on the background level. From experimentally obtained impulse responses of the transient channel the linear filter can be modelled and parametrized. This has been done for two different background levels. The two sets of estimated parameters at these two levels show a shift in the parameters which can be described by a single multiplication factor. This result was extrapolated to arbitrary background levels by postulating that each change in background level can be described by a multiplication factor. This leads to an assumption on the variation of the parameters of the linear filter of the transient channel with changes in the background level. This assumption is tested by simulating the system for different parameter sets of the linear filter. The simulations give a good agreement with experimental data on threshold-versus-duration curves and de Lange curves. The (minor) quantitative differences in simulations and experimental data can be explained.  相似文献

Parameter estimations of a fourth-order linear model are applied to data from subthreshold measurements of impulse responses of the transient visual system. These impulse responses were obtained experimentally by several subjects, at two different background luminance levels and for different field sizes. The parameter estimations show consistent results over different subjects. For both different background levels and field sizes there are consequent changes in the estimated parameters. On the basis of these changes a proposal is made for a spatiotemporal model of the transient visual system.Interdepartmental Group Retina Models. Hybridization solutions containing chaotropes may be used to modulate the thermal stability (Tm or Td) of oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) duplexes or hybrids over a 90 degrees C range. Modulation of Td allows formulation of hybridization solutions that permit ambient temperature hybridization using most combinations of probe length, probe composition, target type, and facilitates development of convenient and rapid assay formats. The conditions required to achieve ODN duplex fidelity, and optimal yields of hybridized product, are described for trichloroacetate, thiocyanate, guanidinium salts and other chaotropic salts. The effects of different solid supports on Td are described. Also, a method is presented that uses chaotropic compounds to reduce background arising from signal ODN probes in a sandwich assay hybridization format.  相似文献

 Evoked potentials – the brain's transient electrical responses to discrete stimuli – are modeled as impulse responses using a continuum model of brain electrical activity. Previous models of ongoing brain activity are refined by adding an improved model of thalamic connectivity and modulation, and by allowing for two populations of excitatory cortical neurons distinguished by their axonal ranges. Evoked potentials are shown to be modelable as an impulse response that is a sum of component responses. The component occurring about 100 ms poststimulus is attributed to sensory activation, and this, together with positive and negative feedback pathways between the cortex and thalamus, results in subsequent peaks and troughs that semiquantitatively reproduce those of observed evoked potentials. Modulation of the strengths of positive and negative feedback, in ways consistent with psychological theories of attentional focus, results in d istinct responses resembling those seen in experiments involving attentional changes. The modeled impulse responses reproduce key features of typical experimental evoked response potentials: timing, relative amplitude, and number of peaks. The same model, with further modulation of feedback, also reproduces experimental spectra. Together, these results mean that a broad range of ongoing and transient electrocortical activity can be understood within a common framework, which is parameterized by values that are directly related to physiological and anatomical quantities. The luminance range over which the pupil mechanism operates was measured with pupil reflectometry in 11 species of butterflies and 13 species of dipteran flies. The different species were selected to be as different as possible regarding the range of ambient luminances in which they are active. Habitat luminance ranges were also measured and correlated to luminances in the experimental situation. The pupil mechanism in butterflies operates in the centre of the luminance range in which the different species are active. Three distinct groups of butterflies with pupil sensitivities matched to their specific types of activity pattern were identified: species active only in direct sunlight, species active also in shaded places and species extending their activity into dawn and dusk. Quite differently, the pupil mechanisms of dipteran flies operate in the upper end of the ambient luminances, and in some species well above the luminances normally encountered by the animal. All fly pupils start to close roughly at the same luminance, irrespective of the luminances in which the species are active. The results suggest that the most important role for the pupil mechanism in many of the butterfly species is to maximize acuity over a wide range of luminances, whereas in flies it is to avoid saturation of transduction units and thereby maximize the photoreceptor's signal-to-noise ratio at high light intensities. Point spread functions, intended to characterize local spatial transfer of the visual system, can be obtained psychophysically using a perturbation technique. Data of such point spread functions are shown for three experimental conditions: foveally at adaptation levels of 1200 and 10 Td, and in the parafovea at an eccentricity of 2 deg using a 1200 Td adaptation level. The results are consistent with earlier findings (Blommaert, F. J.J. and Roufs, J.A.J. 1981, Vision Res. 21, 1223-1233). On the basis of such point spread functions a simplified multiple unit model was constructed, the parameters of which were fitted to thresholds of discs with varying diameter. Threshold predictions from this model for annuli, thin lines and broad lines were found to be in fair quantitative agreement with experimental results. It is argued that for a certain class of slender stimuli, including alphanumeric characters, thresholds can be described with a single channel model containing only the experimentally determined point spread function as a basic component.  相似文献

The effects of doublet impulse sequences of the excitatory motor axon on the movement of the claw opener muscles in the crayfish were examined. The excitatory motor axon was stimulated electrically with various patterns of doublet impulse sequences generated by a digital computer. Doublet impulse sequences of stimulation produced a larger sustained movement than an uniform impulse sequences at the same mean rate of stimulation. The movement was largest when the interval between the impulses of a doublet was about 5 ms. This interval generated a movement amplitude 25% greater than that for the uniform impulse sequence. A simple model was formulated to stimulate the neuromuscular synapse of the claw opener muscle. The relationship between stimulation sequences with alternating long and short intervals and responses (firing probabilities) of the neuromuscular synapse at the same mean rate was investigated. The responses was classified into two typical types which are noneffective Type I and effective Type II to the absolute refractory period (ARP). The characteristics which are larger responses with short intervals in Type I and reduction of responses in the ARP region of Type II formed a plateau peak of the experimental results. By incorporating the reduction of end-plate potential (EPP) as a property of nonlinear rule for temporal summation into the model, it was shown that Type I response is maximal with a plateau peak at short interval, agreeing well with the experimental results from the claw opener muscles.  相似文献

Based on experimental data, a model of the cone-horizontal cell (L-HC) circuit has been developed for the luminosity channel of the catfish retina and impulse responses of cones and L-HC's were replicated for various experimental conditions. Negative feedback from L-HC to the cone pedicle and increases in the dc levels of L-HC (H 0), that produce increases in the feedback gain, convert monophasic impulse responses to those that are biphasic, smaller and faster. Electrical coupling of cones and L-HC's lead to decremental spread of 2 radially outgoing waves with time courses of the coupled cones and L-HC's dependent on the spatial organization of the negative feedback circuit: however, the L-HC's impulse response on spreading outward shows an initial increase before decreasing. Interactions of the cone and L-HC waves were studied using Laplace transforms and the convolution theorem. The presence of a negative feedback circuit leads to deviations of the electrotonic decay from an exponential function. As a result of the dependency of the feedback gain on H 0, electrical coupling introduces non-linearities in the cone-L-HC circuit that are dependent on the mean illuminance level.  相似文献

测定了豌豆(Pisum sativum)幼苗的重组叶绿体中光还原的硫氧还蛋白(Td)对6-磷酸葡萄糖脱氢酶(G6PDH)的钝化作用.结果表明,Td在叶绿体G6PDH的光抑制和暗激活中均起重要的调节作用.在其绿色叶片和黄化组织中,G6PDH都存在着两种同工酶,但二硫苏糖醇(DTT)和Td对黄化幼苗中G6PDH活性的影响与叶绿体的明显不同,DTT对黄化幼苗G6PDH的钝化作用和氧化Td的活化作用均低于对叶绿体中的这两种作用.  相似文献

The work presents experimental data on certain changes in electrical responses of the auditory system's midbrain centre in a contraphasic binaural presentation of sound impulse series. Neuronal cortical activity is selective in respect to dynamic interaural changes of signals' phasic spectre which may serve as a basis for the mechanisms of localising a moving source of sound. Human auditory evoked potentials reveal a manifestation of memorizing the auditory image movement direction as shown by appearance of stimuli deviant from standard mismatch negativity.  相似文献

Previously, critical warming rates vcr above which ice did not have enough time to crystallize had been roughly evaluated for many wholly amorphous aqueous solutions. These evaluations were obtained by extrapolation of the linear variation of the devitrification temperature Td with log v, where v is the warming rate, observed experimentally between 2.5 and 80 degrees C/min. Theory also gives such a linear variation, but only using the first term of a finite expansion. The other terms can be neglected only for small variations of Td. These evaluations were sufficient for classification of the solutions, but large errors were made in vcr. A new and more accurate method of determination of the variation of Td with v is presented here. The general equation giving in our models the derivative of the quantity of ice formed versus temperature T is differentiated, instead of integrated using a finite expansion. This gives an explicit expression of v versus Td assuming that the ratio xd of the quantity of ice formed at Td to the total quantity of ice formed on warming is constant. Experimentally, xd is constant within a good approximation. Theoretical curves representing the variation of Td with v have been drawn for solutions of 35 or 45% (w/w) 1,2-propanediol in water. Td never reaches the temperature of the end of melting Tm, but as v tends toward infinity, Td tends toward an asymptotic value of 0.96Tm for 35% solute. For that solution, above about 10(3) degrees C/min, Td deviates appreciably from linearity with log v, but 1/Td remains almost linear with log v up to Td congruent to 0.95Tm. Therefore, systematic comparison of the theoretical variation of Td with v with a linear variation of 1/Td with log v has been done, varying the parameters of the equations within the entire experimental range. Similar conclusions can be given for all the solutions. Experimentally for Td = 0.95Tm, the quantity of ice crystallized is generally less than 0.1% of the solution, reaching 1% only once. Therefore, a new definition of the critical warming rate vcr has been used, corresponding to extrapolation of the linear variation of 1/T with log v up to Td = 0.95Tm. New values of vcr have been calculated for all the binary systems previously studied. The order of the solutions is almost the same, but the new values of vcr are significantly smaller than the former.  相似文献

Purpose

To describe a new technique to record focal macular electroretinograms (FMERGs) during vitrectomy to assess macular function.

Methods

Intraoperative FMERGs (iFMERGs) were recorded in ten patients (10 eyes) who undergo vitrectomy. iFMERGs were elicited by focal macular stimulation. The stimulus light was directed to the macular area through a 25 gauge (25G) glass fiber optic bundle. Background light was delivered through a dual chandelier-type light fiber probe. Focal macular responses elicited with combinations of stimulus and background luminances were analyzed.

Results

A stimulus luminance that was approximately 1.75 log units brighter than the background light was able to elicit focal macular responses that were not contaminated by stray light responses. Thus, a stimulus luminance of 160 cd/m2 delivered on a background of 3 cd/m2 elicited iFMEGs from only the stimulated area. This combination of stimulus and background luminances did not elicit a response when the stimulus was projected onto the optic nerve head. The iFMERGs elicited by a 10° stimulus with a duration of 100 ms and an interstimulus interval of 150 ms consisted of an a-, b-, and d-waves, the oscillatory potentials, and the photopic negative response (PhNR).

Conclusions

Focal ERGs with all components can be recorded from the macula and other retinal areas during vitreous surgery. This new technique will allow surgeons to assess the function of focal areas of the retina intraoperatively.  相似文献

The stability (reflected in denaturation temperature, Td) of defatted human albumin monomer, monitored by differential scanning calorimetry, decreases with increasing protein concentration. This is shown to be compatible with a simple model in which reversible polymerization of denatured monomer promotes unfolding. This model also predicts an increase in transition cooperativity with decreasing protein concentration whereas experimentally cooperativity decreases because the rate of thermally induced polymerization of unfolded monomer is slow relative to the scan rate of the calorimeter. The denaturation of undefatted human albumin monomer, subsaturated with high affinity endogenous long-chain fatty acid (LCFA), was previously observed by differential scanning calorimetry to be a biphasic process. Td for the first endotherm, associated with the denaturation of LCFA-poor species, decreases with increasing protein concentration similar to that for defatted monomer whereas Td for the second endotherm, associated with denaturation of LCFA-rich species, is independent of concentration. The magnitude of the concentration dependence of Td relates directly to the extent of polymerization of denatured monomer, which decreases with increasing level of bound ligand. The bimodal thermogram observed for undefatted monomer persists upon simultaneous extrapolation of Td values to low concentration and low scan rate thereby demonstrating that this biphasic denaturation arising from ligand redistribution during denaturation is a true thermodynamic phenomenon and not an artifact of specific experimental conditions or the method used to induce denaturation.  相似文献

The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH, E. C. 1.1.1.49) in a reconsituted pea chloroplast system was assayed spectrophotometrically by the reduction of NADP, ming glucose-6-phosphate as substrate. Deactivation of G6PDH could be intensified by adding lightreduced thioredoxin (Td) into the reconstituted chloroplast system. The experimental results presented suggest that Td plays an important role not only in the dark activation, but also in the light deactivation of G6PDH in chloroplasts. There were two isozymes of G6PDH in green and in etiolated pea seedlings. The effects of dithiothreitol (DTT) and Td on G6PDH in etiolated seedlings were different from that in chloroplasts. The light regulation of G6PDH in chloroplasts is mediated through Td.  相似文献

The experimental results on the formation and development of initial stages of an impulse breakdown in atmospheric-pressure argon at townsend and streamer breakdown mechanisms for different initial conditions are presented. A streamer channel is shown to be initiated by bright luminescence formed at the point of critical avalanche amplification at different distances from the cathode depending on overvoltage. Prebreakdown currents are experimentally measured for the townsend and streamer breakdown mechanisms and peculiarities of spark channel formation for these mechanisms are studied.  相似文献

Hidden Markov modeling (HMM) can be applied to extract single channel kinetics at signal-to-noise ratios that are too low for conventional analysis. There are two general HMM approaches: traditional Baum's reestimation and direct optimization. The optimization approach has the advantage that it optimizes the rate constants directly. This allows setting constraints on the rate constants, fitting multiple data sets across different experimental conditions, and handling nonstationary channels where the starting probability of the channel depends on the unknown kinetics. We present here an extension of this approach that addresses the additional issues of low-pass filtering and correlated noise. The filtering is modeled using a finite impulse response (FIR) filter applied to the underlying signal, and the noise correlation is accounted for using an autoregressive (AR) process. In addition to correlated background noise, the algorithm allows for excess open channel noise that can be white or correlated. To maximize the efficiency of the algorithm, we derive the analytical derivatives of the likelihood function with respect to all unknown model parameters. The search of the likelihood space is performed using a variable metric method. Extension of the algorithm to data containing multiple channels is described. Examples are presented that demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the algorithm. Practical issues such as the selection of appropriate noise AR orders are also discussed through examples.  相似文献

Summary In psychophysics the relation between the threshold luminance increment and the background luminance for visual increment detection, is known to become linear for high luminances. This so called Weber-law means that at high luminances the threshold is caused by the detection apparatus, and not by the quantum noise of the stimulus itself. A simple machine implementing the Weber-law is discussed. This machine obviates the need for an internal noise source (or dark light). It is the combined result of an apparatus that reduces the output event rate by causing the quantum to spike ratio to follow the input intensity, and a detection criterion that needs a constant number of extra output events to generate a positive response. The dynamic properties of the machine are described by the solutions of a simple though nonlinear differential equation. The supra threshold properties prove to mimic several of the responses known to occur at ganglion cell level in the cat's retina. A tentative model of an on-center receptive field is presented, and results obtained by simulating this model on a digital cumputer are compared with some recent electrophysiological findings.
