Few studies have examined core–periphery genetic patterns in tropical marine taxa. The core–periphery hypothesis (CPH) predicts that core populations will have higher genetic diversity and lower genetic differentiation than peripheral populations as a consequence of greater population sizes and population connectivity in the core. However, the applicability of the CPH to many tropical marine taxa may be confounded by their complex population histories and/or high (asymmetric) population connectivity. In this study we investigated genetic patterns (based on mtDNA) across the latitudinal range of the neon damselfish Pomacentrus coelestis (36°N, Japan – 37°S, east Australia). We suggest a novel hypothetical framework for core–periphery genetic patterns and extend typical analyses to include genealogical analyses, partitioned β‐diversity measures (total βSOR, turnover βSIM, and nestedness‐resultant βSNE), and analyses of nestedness. We found that the existence of two divergent lineages of the neon damselfish led levels of genetic diversity to deviate from CPH expectations. When focusing on the widespread lineage (Pacific clade) nucleotide diversity was higher in the core, supporting the CPH. However, genetic patterns differed toward the northern and southern peripheries of the Pacific clade. The turnover of haplotypes (pairwise‐βsim) increased over distance in the north, indicative of historical colonization with little contemporary migration. In contrast, although turnover was still dominant in the south (βSIM), there was no relationship to distance (pairwise‐βsim), suggesting the influence of more contemporary processes. Moreover, the haplotype compositions of populations in the south were nested according to latitude, indicating immigration from lower latitudes toward the southern periphery. By extending the typical characterizations of core–periphery genetic patterns we were able to identify the effects of lineage sympatry on measures of genetic diversity and contrasting demographic histories toward the latitudinal peripheries of the neon damselfish's range.  相似文献

Range edges are of particular interest to ecology because they hold key insights into the limits of the realized niche and associated population dynamics. A recent feature of Oikos summarized the state of the art on range edge ecology. While the typical question is what causes range edges, another important question is how range edges influence the distribution of abundances across a species geographic range when dispersal is present. We used a single species population dynamics model on a coupled-lattice to determine the effects of dispersal on peripheral populations as compared to populations at the core of the range. In the absence of resource gradients, the reduced neighborhood and thus lower connectivity or higher isolation among populations at the range edge alone led to significantly lower population sizes in the periphery of the range than in the core. Lower population sizes mean higher extinction risks and lower adaptability at the range edge, which could inhibit or slow range expansions, and thus effectively stabilize range edges. The strength of this effect depended on the potential population growth rate and the maximum dispersal distance. Lower potential population growth rates led to a stronger effect of dispersal resulting in a higher difference in population sizes between the two areas. The differential effect of dispersal on population sizes at the core and periphery of the range in the absence of resource gradients implies that traditional, habitat-based distribution models could result in misleading conclusions about the habitat quality in the periphery. Lower population sizes at the periphery are also relevant to conservation, because habitat removal not only eliminates populations but also creates new edges. Populations bordering these new edges may experience declines, due to their increased isolation.  相似文献

Summary We have analysed the distribution of queens under stones at the core and at the periphery of a supercolony of Lasius neglectus that occupies 14 ha at Seva (NE Spain). Queens were not found alone, but rather within worker groups. Density at the center (mean ± s.d.: 1.38 ± 2.87 queens/stone; n = 100 stones; range 0–14) was not different from density at the periphery (1.18 ± 2.38; range 0–12). The estimate of the number of queens found under stones for the whole colony is about 35500. Egg-laying rates for queens from these two zones were obtained in the laboratory, at three different temperatures, and there were no differences detected. The presence of brood stages, from eggs to cocoons, was also similar in both zones. The homogeneous distribution of colony components may indicate that the area occupied by L. neglectus has already reached saturation. With a different technique – soil core extraction – we could estimate the density of workers in the soil: 800 workers per m2. Soil cores had 6.28 ± 20.0 workers/core (range: 0–173), giving a rough estimate of 1.12 × 108 workers in the soil, for the entire colony. Though few, some queens were also recovered from soil cores. Queen numbers for the supercolony, based on queens found in the soil, reaches the astounding level of 360000. A quantitative comparison (i.e., number of cartilage nodules) of cartilage differentiation was made between micromass cell cultures prepared with cells from different locations (core vs periphery) within prechondrogenic chick wing buds. Wing bud core cells in micromass culture exhibit a greater developmental bias toward cartilage differentiation than periphery cells from the same limbs. In addition, myogenic cells appear more frequently in cultures prepared from wing bud periphery than in those prepared from core tissue. Therefore a stage 23–24 wing bud is not a homogeneous population of multipotential mesenchymal cells. Instead, a stage 23–24 wing bud contains two classes of cells, each characterized by a bias for either cartilage or muscle differentiation, and a third class of uncharacterized mesenchymal cells.  相似文献

Reticuloendothelial system (RES) particulate uptake (PU) of vascular debris influences survival from extreme hyperthermia. Little is known of the effect of extreme hyperthermia, unrelated to fever, on RES PU shortly after reaching a maximum core temperature (T(c)). Relative to normothermic rats (T(c)=38.0 degrees C), rats at T(c)=42.6 degrees C had significantly higher, while T(c)=42.0 degrees C rats had significantly lower total RES tissue (lung, liver, spleen) PU of fluorescent microspheres (1 μ), when compared to rats at T(c)=42.6 or 38.0 degrees C. These findings suggest at T(c)=42.6 degrees C, rats were not actively thermoregulating. As such, more blood remained in the core than in the periphery, which resulted in greater core RES tissue PU. In contrast, to reduce or control core heat, rats at T(c)=42.0 degrees or 38.0 degrees C directed more blood to the periphery, which reduced core RES tissue PU. Blood flow patterns as directed by the state or degree of active thermoregulation is likely an influence of hyperthermia on RES PU.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Heterodera glycines as influenced by alachlor, fenamiphos, and ethoprop alone and in herbicide-nematicide combinations were studied in the field. Numbers of H. glycines juveniles and eggs were higher at midseason and harvest where nematicides were applied. Fenamiphos alone or in combination with alachlor provided better control of H. glycines and greater seed yields than treatments with ethoprop. Numbers of H. glycines eggs at harvest in 1980 were positively correlated with numbers of juveniles at planting in 1981 and negatively related to seed yield in 1981.  相似文献

Fetal cells enter maternal circulation during pregnancy and persist in the woman’s body for decades, achieving a form of physiological microchimerism. These cells were also evidenced in tumors. We investigated the frequency and concentration of fetal microchimerism in the local breast cancer environment. From 19 patients with confirmed breast neoplasia, after breast surgical resection, we collected three fresh specimens from the tumor core, breast tissue at tumor periphery, and adjacent normal breast tissue. The presence of male DNA was analyzed with a quantitative PCR assay for the sex determining region gene (SRY) gene. In the group of women who had given birth to at least one son, we detected fetal microchimerism in 100% of samples from tumors and their periphery and in 64% (9 of 14) of those from normal breast tissue. The tissues from the tumor and its periphery carry a significantly increased number of SRY copies compared to its neighboring common breast tissue (p = 0.005). The median of the normalized SRY-signal was about 77 (range, 3.2–21467) and 14-fold (range, 1.3–2690) greater in the tumor and respectively in the periphery than in the normal breast tissue. In addition, the relative expression of the SRY gene had a median 5.5 times larger in the tumor than in its periphery (range, 1.1–389.4). We found a heterogeneous distribution of fetal microchimerism in breast cancer environment. In women with sons, breast neoplasia harbors male cells at significantly higher levels than in peripheral and normal breast tissue.  相似文献

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSC) are a small self-renewing subpopulation of type A spermatogonia, which for the rest are composed of differentiating cells with a very similar morphology. We studied the development of primary co-cultures of prepubertal bovine Sertoli cells and A spermatogonia and the effect of glial cell line-derived neurotropic factor (GDNF) on the numbers and types of spermatogonia, the formation of spermatogonial colonies and the capacity of the cultured SSC to colonize a recipient mouse testis. During the first week of culture many, probably differentiating, A spermatogonia entered apoptosis while others formed pairs and chains of A spermatogonia. After 1 week colonies started to appear that increased in size with time. Numbers of single (A(s)) and paired (A(pr)) spermatogonia were significantly higher in GDNF treated cultures at Days 15 and 25 (P < 0.01 and 0.05, respectively), and the ratio of A(s) to A(pr) and spermatogonial chains (A(al)) was also higher indicating enhanced self-renewal of the SSC. Furthermore, spermatogonial outgrowths in the periphery of the colonies showed a significantly higher number of A spermatogonia with a more primitive morphology under the influence of GDNF (P < 0.05). Spermatogonial stem cell transplantation experiments revealed a 2-fold increase in stem cell activity in GDNF treated spermatogonial cultures (P < 0.01). We conclude that GDNF rather than inducing proliferation, enhances self-renewal and increases survival rates of SSC in the bovine spermatogonial culture system.  相似文献

I hypothesize that re‐occurring prior experience of complex systems mobilizes a fast response, whose attractor is encoded by their strongly connected network core. In contrast, responses to novel stimuli are often slow and require the weakly connected network periphery. Upon repeated stimulus, peripheral network nodes remodel the network core that encodes the attractor of the new response. This “core‐periphery learning” theory reviews and generalizes the heretofore fragmented knowledge on attractor formation by neural networks, periphery‐driven innovation, and a number of recent reports on the adaptation of protein, neuronal, and social networks. The core‐periphery learning theory may increase our understanding of signaling, memory formation, information encoding and decision‐making processes. Moreover, the power of network periphery‐related “wisdom of crowds” inventing creative, novel responses indicates that deliberative democracy is a slow yet efficient learning strategy developed as the success of a billion‐year evolution. With predicted decreases in genetic diversity and greater genetic differentiation at range peripheries relative to their cores, it can be difficult to distinguish between the roles of current disturbance versus historic processes in shaping contemporary genetic patterns. To address this problem, we test for differences in historic demography and landscape genetic structure of coastal giant salamanders (Dicamptodon tenebrosus) in two core regions (Washington State, United States) versus the species' northern peripheral region (British Columbia, Canada) where the species is listed as threatened. Coalescent-based demographic simulations were consistent with a pattern of post-glacial range expansion, with both ancestral and current estimates of effective population size being much larger within the core region relative to the periphery. However, contrary to predictions of recent human-induced population decline in the less genetically diverse peripheral region, there was no genetic signature of population size change. Effects of current demographic processes on genetic structure were evident using a resistance-based landscape genetics approach. Among core populations, genetic structure was best explained by length of the growing season and isolation by resistance (i.e. a 'flat' landscape), but at the periphery, topography (slope and elevation) had the greatest influence on genetic structure. Although reduced genetic variation at the range periphery of D. tenebrosus appears to be largely the result of biogeographical history rather than recent impacts, our analyses suggest that inherent landscape features act to alter dispersal pathways uniquely in different parts of the species' geographic range, with implications for habitat management.  相似文献

In vitro models of sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (MVT) are rare and do not usually show spiral reentry on the epicardium. We hypothesized that MVT is associated with the spiral wave in the endocardium and that this stable reentrant propagation is supported by a persistently elevated intracellular calcium (Ca(i)) transient at the core of the spiral wave. We performed dual optical mapping of transmembrane potential (V(m)) and Ca(i) dynamics of the right ventricular (RV) endocardium in Langendorff-perfused rabbit hearts (n = 12). Among 64 induced arrhythmias, 55% were sustained MVT (>10 min). Eighty percent of MVT showed stationary spiral waves (>10 cycles, cycle length: 128 +/- 14.6 ms) in the endocardial mapped region, anchoring to the anatomic discontinuities. No reentry activity was observed in the epicardium. During reentry, the amplitudes of V(m) and Ca(i) signals were higher in the periphery and gradually decreased toward the core. At the core, maximal V(m) and Ca(i) amplitudes were 42.95 +/- 5.89% and 43.95 +/- 9.46%, respectively, of the control (P < 0.001). However, the trough of the V(m) and Ca(i) signals at the core were higher than those in the periphery, indicating persistent V(m) and Ca(i) elevations during reentry. BAPTA-AM, a calcium chelator, significantly reduced the maximal Ca(i) transient amplitude and prevented sustained MVT and spiral wave formation in the mapped region. These findings indicate that endocardial spiral waves often anchor to anatomic discontinuities causing stable MVT in normal rabbit ventricles. The spiral core is characterized by diminished V(m) and Ca(i) amplitudes and persistent V(m) and Ca(i) elevations during reentry.  相似文献

The phenotypic variation and response of plants to water stress were studied in a field trial in populations of wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum Koch. from Israel and Turkmenistan. Populations from the species distributional core and periphery were compared and contrasted for phenotypic variation in 16 phenological and morphological traits. The peripheral populations (six) were found to be phenotypically more variable and more resistant to water stress than core populations (12). The association of water-stress resistance with high phenotypic variability gives support to the hypothesis that populations that are genetically more variable are better adapted or pre-adapted to environmental changes and are thus valuable for conservation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Plumage bacteria may play an important role in shaping the life histories of birds. However, to design suitable experiments to examine causal relationships between plumage bacteria and the fitness of host birds, natural variation in plumage bacterial communities needs to be better understood. We examined within‐individual consistency of plumage bacterial contamination in Great Tits (Parus major), comparing different body regions (ventral vs. dorsal) and comparing contamination between years. Numbers of free‐living and attached bacteria and the species richness of feather‐degrading bacterial assemblages were studied using flow cytometry and ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (RISA). Numbers of both types of bacteria were higher on dorsal than on ventral feathers. Numbers of free‐living, but not attached, bacteria on the two body regions were highly positively correlated. There was also a strong within‐individual correlation between numbers of attached bacteria during the same breeding stages in different years. These results suggest that, despite variation in absolute levels of feather bacterial loads between years and different body regions, sampling individual birds can provide reliable estimates of relative levels of bacterial contamination, as long as sampling time and body region are carefully standardized.  相似文献

Summary Using histochemical methods for G-6-P-DH, NAD-HD, M-DH, S-DH, L-DH and G-DH the author has examined the participation and distribution of these enzymes in Pacinian Corpuscles of male cats. The reactions for G-6-P-DH, L-DH, M-DH and NAD-HD show similarity regarding the intensity and the character of intrareceptoral distribution. The nerve fibre and its ending show the highest activity. Three other zones might be differentiated round them. The first zone situated in close proximity to the axon coincides with the inner core of the Corpuscles and shows higher activity than the others (second and third zones). The activity of the latter ones diminishes towards the periphery of the receptor.The reaction for S-DH is strongly expressed at the nerve fibre and its ending and weaker at the inner core of the Corpuscles.The reaction for G-DH is moderately expressed in the inner core whereas the nerve fibre and the outer core show the feeble activity.The author discusses the obtained results in relation to the necessity of energy and the ways it is obtained for the excitation of the axonal membrane.  相似文献

昆虫与植被之间相互关系的深入研究,有助于更好的理解生态系统结构与功能之间的关系以及生态系统生物多样性维持机理。本文通过对集中种植和分块种植下两种不同种植方式龙葵叶片虫食状进行调查分析,以期对龙葵的栽培和养护提供理论基础和技术建议。研究结果表明:龙葵叶片中共识别出11种虫食状类型,其中,集中种植方式有10种,分块种植方式有11种,各种虫食状类型出现频率在0.4%-24.7%;集中种植样地的龙葵叶片虫食状种类数、Shannon-Wiener指数和Pielou均匀度指数均低于分块种植;分块种植的龙葵叶片受到植食性昆虫的伤害频率较高,但是集中种植的龙葵叶片受到的伤害程度却明显高于分块种植方式。因此,种植龙葵应尽量避免大规模集中种植方式,不同生态系统边界之间边缘效应的尺度和强弱的关系是未来研究的重点和核心问题。  相似文献

Cell release during milk fermentation by Lactococcus lactis immobilized in calcium alginate beads was examined. Numbers of free cells in the milk gradually increased from 1 x 10(6) to 3 x 10(7) CFU/ml upon successive reutilization of the beads. Rinsing the beads between fermentations did not influence the numbers of free cells in the milk. Cell release was not affected by initial cell density within the beads or by alginate concentration, although higher acidification rates were achieved with increased cell loading. Coating alginate beads with poly-L-lysine (PLL) did not significantly reduce the release of cells during five consecutive fermentations. A double coating of PLL and alginate reduced cell release by a factor of approximately 50. However, acidification of milk with beads having the PLL-alginate coating was slower than that with uncoated beads. Immersing the beads in ethanol to kill cells on the periphery reduced cell release, but acidification activity was maintained. Dipping the beads in aluminum nitrate or a hot CaCl2 solution was not as effective as dipping them in ethanol. Ethanol treatment or heating of the beads appears to be a promising method for maintaining acidification activity while minimizing viable cell release due to loosely entrapped cells near the surface of the alginate beads.  相似文献

Mud (with or without Chironomus) taken from the bottom of a shallow (6 m) eutrophic reservoir, was maintained (about 3 weeks) in trays supported 30 cm and 70 cm above the bottom. At the end of the experiment it contained 7-9 times more Chironomus plumosus individuals than did the mud at the bottom. Numbers of young (≤12 mm) larvae were up to 18 times higher, and youngest (≤6 mm) larvae (absent in the bottom at the end of the experiment) were abundant. Such patterns were more evident at the higher (70 cm) than the lower (30 cm) level. Numbers of the oldest (≥18 mm) larvae at the higher level were only 6 times higher (whilst more than 8 times at the lower level) than at the bottom, probably due to quicker development and emergence in higher trays. So the production of the population increased with the increasing distance from the bottom. In the tray at the bottom (which could protrude 1–2 cm above it) numbers were twice those outside it, and the youngest larvae occurred. There was a slight current at the research site. Nevertheless, short time oxygen deficits occurred periodically, and were probably the main cause of considerable reductions in Chironomus numbers at the bottom during the experiment.  相似文献

Whether regional population density is a good indicator of environmental quality according to demographic variables such as breeding success or short-term population trends is controversial. In this paper we analyze the interrelationships among regional population density, breeding success and recent population trends of an endangered species, Bonelli's eagle in the Iberian Peninsula. We also analyze the different influence of geographical, climatic, landscape structure and human impact variables on regional variation in those demographic variables. Breeding success was higher and population decrease was lower in those areas where the population density of Bonelli's eagle was greater. Breeding success, density and recent population trends of Bonelli's eagle were tightly related, increasing from northern to southern Iberian Peninsula (with highest figures at intermediate latitudes), and as sun radiation increased, and altitude decreased. Breeding success and population density were significantly lower in the periphery of the distribution range than in core areas in the Iberian Peninsula. Population trends between 2000 and 2005 were also more negative (decreasing) in the periphery. Overall, these results suggest that population density in this endangered species of large home-range is a good indicator of environmental quality and reproductive output, and that peripheral populations occupy low-suitability areas with lower breeding success, where negative short-term population trends are more likely.  相似文献

Mutation/selection algorithms were applied to increase the efficiency and the robustness of sparse random networks. Selection for better efficiency leads to the well-known star topology, while selection for robustness only results in a relatively dense core and a small periphery. Concomitant selection for both efficiency and robustness leads to networks with intermittent center/periphery values. Networks evolving under multiple attack regimes develop distinct topologies with larger cores, and are characterized by parameter distributions different from those developing under single-attack regimes.  相似文献
