Giardia and Cryptosporidium levels were determined by using a combined immunofluorescence test for filtered drinking water samples collected from 66 surface water treatment plants in 14 states and 1 Canadian province. Giardia cysts were detected in 17% of the 83 filtered water effluents. Cryptosporidium oocysts, were observed in 27% of the drinking water samples. Overall, cysts or oocysts were found in 39% of the treated effluent samples. Despite the frequent detection of parasites in drinking water, microscopic observations of the cysts and oocysts suggested that most of the organisms were nonviable. Compliance with the filtration criteria outlined by the Surface Water Treatment Rule of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency did not ensure that treated water was free of cysts and oocysts. The average plant effluent turbidity for sites which were parasite positive was 0.19 nephelometric turbidity units. Of sites that were positive for Giardia or Cryptosporidium spp., 78% would have been able to meet the turbidity regulations of the Surface Water Temperature Rule. Evaluation of the data by using a risk assessment model developed for Giardia spp. showed that 24% of the utilities examined would not meet a 1/10,000 annual risk of Giardia infection. For cold water conditions (0.5 degree C), 46% of the plants would not achieve the 1/10,000 risk level.  相似文献

In January 1984 the River Dee in north Wales was contaminated with phenol, with subsequent contamination of the tap water received by about two million consumers. A retrospective postal survey of 594 households was undertaken to determine whether consumption of this contaminated water was associated with illness. Subjects in areas that received contaminated water reported significantly more gastrointestinal illness than those in a nearby unexposed area (32.6% v 8.7%, p less than 0.00001) as well as reporting a higher incidence of any symptoms (43.6% v 18.4%, p less than 0.00001). Symptoms were consistent with phenol poisoning and bore a strong temporal relation to the pollution of the supply, but they developed at concentrations of phenols previously considered to be safe by the water authorities concerned. Chlorophenols produced during the treatment of water may have aggravated the problem.  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in surface water supplies from the province of Alava, northern Spain, and to investigate possible associations among the presence of these pathogenic protozoa with microbiological, physicochemical and atmospheric parameters. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 284 samples of drinking and recreational water supplies were analysed. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in 63.5% of river samples, 33.3% of reservoirs samples, 15.4% and 22.6% of raw water samples from conventional and small water treatment facilities (respectively), 30.8% of treated water from small treatment facilities, and 26.8% of tap water from municipalities with chlorination treatment only. Giardia cysts were found in 92.3% of river samples, 55.5% of reservoirs samples, 26.9% and 45.2% of raw water samples from conventional and small water treatment facilities (respectively), 19.2% of treated water from small treatment facilities, and 26.8% of tap water from municipalities with chlorination treatment only. The presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia had significant Pearson's correlation coefficients (P < 0.01) with the turbidity levels of the samples, and a number of significant associations were also found with the count levels for total coliforms and Escherichia coli. The samples were positive for Cryptosporidium significantly (P < 0.05) more frequently during the autumn season than during the spring and winter seasons. No significant differences were found in the seasonal pattern of Giardia. A moderate association (r = 0.52) was found between rainfall and the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. CONCLUSIONS: Cryptosporidium and Giardia are consistently found at elevated concentrations in surface waters for human consumption from the province of Alava, northern Spain. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Water treatments based on rapid filtration process and/or chlorination only are often unsatisfactory to provide safe drinking water, a situation that represents an important public health problem for the affected population because of the risk of waterborne outbreaks.  相似文献

To understand the distribution of Giardia cysts in drinking water supplies in Seoul, Korea, we collected water samples quarterly at 6 intakes in the Han River, its largest stream and 6 conventional water treatment plants (WTPs) serving drinking water, from 2000 to 2009. Giardia cysts in each of 10 L water were confirmed in 35.0% of intake water samples and the arithmetic mean was 1.65 cysts/10 L (range 0-35 cysts/10 L). The lowest cyst density was observed at Paldang and Kangbuk intakes, and the pollution level was higher at 4 intakes downstream. It seemed that these 4 intakes were under influence of Wangsuk stream at the end of which cysts were found in all samples with the mean of 140 cysts/10 L. The annual mean number of cysts was 0.21-4.21 cysts/10 L, and the cyst level at the second half of the 10 years was about 1/5 of that at first half on average. The cysts were more frequently found in winter, and their mean density was 3.74 cysts/10 L in winter and 0.80-1.08 cysts/10 L in other seasons. All finished water samples collected at 6 WTPs were negative for Giardia in each of 100 L sample for 10 years and cyst removal by physical process was average 2.9-log. It was concluded that conventional water treatment at 6 WTPs of Seoul appears to remove the cysts effectively under the present level of their source water. Domestic wastewater from the urban region could be an important source of Giardia pollution in the river.  相似文献

Giardia and Cryptosporidium levels were determined by using a combined immunofluorescence test for source waters of 66 surface water treatment plants in 14 states and 1 Canadian province. The results showed that cysts and oocysts were widely dispersed in the aquatic environment. Giardia spp. were detected in 81% of the raw water samples. Cryptosporidium spp. were found in 87% of the raw water locations. Overall, Giardia or Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 97% of the raw water samples. Higher cyst and oocyst densities were associated with source waters receiving industrial or sewage effluents. Significant correlations were found between Giardia and Cryptosporidium densities and raw water quality parameters such as turbidity and total and fecal coliform levels. Statistical modeling suggests that cyst and oocyst densities could be predicted on the basis of watershed and water quality characteristics. The occurrence of high levels of Giardia cysts in raw water samples may require water utilities to apply treatment beyond that outlined in the Surface Water Treatment Rule of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  相似文献

The incidence and density of Legionella spp. in raw water, water at various stages of treatment, and in potable distribution water were determined by direct immunofluorescence. The number of cells reacting with Legionella-specific fluorescent antibody conjugates in raw waters ranged from about 10(4) to 10(5) cells/liter, whereas the concentrations of fluorescent antibody-positive cells in the distribution waters were generally 10- to 100-fold lower than in the raw source waters. No viable or virulent Legionella strains were isolated from either the source or distribution waters. However, Legionella spp. are infrequently isolated from water at temperatures below 15 degrees C as was the case in the system surveyed in this study.  相似文献

A bacteriological survey was conducted of untreated, individual groundwater supplies in Preston County, W.Va. Nearly 60% of the water supplies contained total coliforms in excess of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant level of 1 CFU/100 ml. Approximately one-third of the water systems contained fecal coliforms and/or fecal streptococci. Acinetobacter spp. were detected in 38% of the groundwater supplies at an arithmetic mean density of 8 CFU/100 ml and were present in 16% of the water supplies in the absence of total coliforms, posing some concern about the usefulness of total coliforms as indicators of the presence of this opportunistic pathogen. Slime production, a virulence factor for A. calcoaceticus, was not significantly different between well water isolates and clinical strains, suggesting some degree of pathogenic potential for strains isolated from groundwater. In addition, several Acinetobacter isolates were able to interfere with sheen production by some coliform bacteria on M-Endo medium, adding further to the possible significance of Acinetobacter spp. in groundwater supplies.  相似文献

Access to safe and clean drinking water is an essential element of healthy life also known as the primary human needs. The present study was conducted to investigate heavy metal (HM) concentrations of drinking water. Excess health risk of HM (Cr, Pb, and Cd) intake is related to the drinking water consumption in local population. HMs concentrations were analyzed by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer and were compared with permissible limits regulated by country and World Health Organization (WHO). The hazard quotient (HQ) and Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) were determined to show the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of HMs, respectively. HQs were found in the order of Pb > Cd > Cr and subsequently HI index was also estimated for all HM in two age groups (children and adults). The comparisons indicate no possibility of non-carcinogenic effects to the local population. The values for ELCR were found in the order of Cr > Cd > Pb. The ELCR index was found above acceptable risk levels for chromium and cadmium in both children and adults groups. Furthermore, intermetal correlation results revealed that heavy metals have common sources resulting from geogenic and anthropogenic activities and these are major sources of water contamination in Sistan and Baluchestan province.  相似文献

This study was carried out to estimate the prevalence and potential for human infectivity of Giardia cysts in Canadian drinking water supplies. The presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts was also noted, but isolates were not collected for further study. A total of 1,760 raw water samples, treated water samples, and raw sewage samples were collected from 72 municipalities across Canada for analysis, 58 of which treat their water by chlorination alone. Giardia cysts were found in 73% of raw sewage samples, 21% of raw water samples, and 18.2% of treated water samples. There was a trend to higher concentration and more frequent incidence of Giardia cysts in the spring and fall, but positive samples were found in all seasons. Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in 6.1% of raw sewage samples, 4.5% of raw water samples, and 3.5% of treated water samples. Giardia cyst viability was assessed by infecting Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and by use of a modified propidium iodide dye exclusion test, and the results were not always in agreement. No Cryptosporidium isolates were recovered from gerbils, but 8 of 276 (3%) water samples and 19 of 113 (17%) sewage samples resulted in positive Giardia infections. Most of the water samples contained a low number of cysts, and 12 Giardia isolates were successfully recovered from gerbils and cultured. Biotyping of these isolates by isoenzyme analysis and karyotyping by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis separated the isolates into the same three discrete groups. Karyotyping revealed four or five chromosomal bands ranging in size from 0.9 to 2 Mb, and four of the isolates had the same banding pattern as that of the WB strain. Analysis of the nucleotide sequences of the 16S DNA coding for rRNA divided the isolates into two distinct groups corresponding to the Polish and Belgian designations found by other investigators. The occurrence of these biotypes and karyotypes appeared to be random and was not related to geographic or other factors (e.g., different types were found in both drinking water and sewage from the same community). Biotyping and karyotyping showed that isolates from this study were genetically and biochemically similar to those found elsewhere, including well-described human source strains such as WB. We conclude that potentially human-infective Giardia cysts are commonly found in raw surface waters and sewage in Canada, although cyst viability is frequently low. Cryptosporidium oocysts are less common in Canada. An action level of three to five Giardia cysts per 100 liters in treated drinking water is proposed on the basis of the monitoring data from outbreak situations. This action level is lower than that proposed by Haas and Rose (C. N. Haas and J. B. Rose, J. Am. Water Works Assoc. 87(9):81-84, 1995) for Cryptosporidium spp. (10 to 30 oocysts per 100 liters).  相似文献

A procedure was developed to detect false-negative reactions (interference) in the standard most-probable-number (S-MPN) technique for coliform enumeration of untreated surface water and potable water supplies. This modified MPN (M-MPN) procedure allowed a quantitative assessment of the interference with coliform detection in untreated surface water and potable water supplies. Coliform interference was found to occur in the presumptive, confirmed, and completed tests of the S-MPN technique. When coliforms were present, interference with their detection occurred in over 80% of the samples. The inferior nature of the S-MPN was revealed by the 100% increase in the incidence of completed coliform-positive drinking water samples obtained with the M-MPN technique. The M-MPN procedure was also superior to the standard membrane filter technique. Eight different species of coliforms were recovered from false-negative tests, including Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, and Escherichia coli (in decreasing order of occurrence). The use of standard MPN techniques for monitoring potable water supplies may lead to a false security that the drinking water supply is potable, i.e., free from indicator bacteria.  相似文献

Two unchlorinated drinking water supplies were investigated to assess the potential of water treatment and distribution systems to support the growth of Legionella spp. The treatment plant for supply A distributed treated groundwater with a low concentration (<0.5 ppm of C) of natural organic matter (NOM), and the treatment plant for supply B distributed treated groundwater with a high NOM concentration (8 ppm of C). In both supplies, the water temperature ranged from about 10°C after treatment to 18°C during distribution. The concentrations of Legionella spp. in distributed water, analyzed with quantitative PCR (Q-PCR), averaged 2.9 (± 1.9) × 10(2) cells liter(-1) in supply A and 2.5 (± 1.6) × 10(3) cells liter(-1) in supply B. No Legionella was observed with the culture method. A total of 346 clones (96 operational taxonomical units [OTUs] with ≥97% sequence similarity) were retrieved from water and biofilms of supply A and 251 (43 OTUs) from supply B. The estimation of the average value of total species richness (Chao1) in supply A (153) was clearly higher than that for supply B (58). In each supply, about 77% of the sequences showed <97% similarity to described species. Sequences related to L. pneumophila were only incidentally observed. The Legionella populations of the two supplies are divided into two distinct clusters based on distances in the phylogenetic tree as fractions of the branch length. Thus, a large variety of mostly yet-undescribed Legionella spp. proliferates in unchlorinated water supplies at temperatures below 18°C. The lowest concentration and greatest diversity were observed in the supply with the low NOM concentration.  相似文献

Background

Drinking water contaminated by chemicals or pathogens is a major public health threat in the developing world. Responses to this threat often require water consumers (households or communities) to improve their own management or treatment of water. One approach hypothesized to increase such positive behaviors is increasing knowledge of the risks of unsafe water through the dissemination of water contamination data. This paper reviews the evidence for this approach in changing behavior and subsequent health outcomes.

Methods/Principal Findings

A systematic review was conducted for studies where results of tests for contaminants in drinking water were disseminated to populations whose water supply posed a known health risk. Studies of any design were included where data were available from a contemporaneous comparison or control group. Using multiple sources >14,000 documents were located. Six studies met inclusion criteria (four of arsenic contamination and two of microbiological contamination). Meta-analysis was not possible in most cases due to heterogeneity of outcomes and study designs. Outcomes included water quality, change of water source, treatment of water, knowledge of contamination, and urinary arsenic. Source switching was most frequently reported: of 5 reporting studies 4 report significantly higher rates of switching (26–72%) among those who received a positive test result and a pooled risk difference was calculate for 2 studies (RD = 0.43 [CI0.4.0–0.46] 6–12 months post intervention) suggesting 43% more of those with unsafe wells switched source compared to those with safe wells. Strength of evidence is low since the comparison is between non-equivalent groups. Two studies concerning fecal contamination reported non-significant increases in point-of-use water treatment.

Conclusion

Despite the publication of some large cohort studies and some encouraging results the evidence base to support dissemination of contamination data to improve water management is currently equivocal. Rigorous studies on this topic are needed, ideally using common outcome measures.  相似文献

Giardia and Cryptosporidium are important agents of water-borne parasitic diseases. In this work we have examined the recovery efficiency of two methods for concentrating Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts from water: a membrane filtration method and a crossflow filtration method. Results demonstrated a higher recovery efficiency for crossflow filtration method in comparison to the membrane filtration method. In addition, Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts concentration was evaluated in wastewater samples submitted to chemical flocculation or chemical flocculation followed by slow sand filtration. Results showed that slow sand filtration was capable of reducing the number of Giardia cysts, but not of Cryptosporidium oocysts in wastewater.  相似文献

The effect of the fluoride concentration in drinking water on the prevention of fractures related to osteoporosis has been questioned or contradicted in several recent studies. These studies have been mostly performed using water with artificially added fluoride, at the optimum level of about 1 mg/l. In the present study authors have investigated the effect of equal or greater fluoride concentrations (mean 1.45 mg/l) naturally present in waters supplied for human consumption to a population of 72.756 (Bracciano county), in comparison with a population of 126.189 (Avezzano county), supplied with low fluoride concentration water (mean 0.05 mg/l). The incidence of fractures in the years 1990 and 1991 was evaluated in the two areas (Bracciano and Avezzano), which are located in central Italy and where population have a similar life style, economic and social level and employment structure. The incidence data were obtained from the registers of the public hospital taken as a reference in each district. The authors noticed a significantly greater rate of fracture incidence at several parts of the body, in particular femur fractures (relative risks for males 4.28 and for females 2.64), in the population of the district of Avezzano than in the population of Bracciano. The greater concentration of fluoride in waters distributed for human consumption in Bracciano district seems to have the effect of protecting its inhabitants against fractures.  相似文献
