The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of selenium in the liver and kidneys of roe deer and red deer from West Pomerania, depending on the season. Altogether, samples from 169 animals were collected (96 from roe deer and 73 from red deer) in 2003–2007. The mean concentration of selenium in the liver of red deer and roe deer was 0.37 μg/g and 0.62 μg/g dry weight, respectively. In kidneys, Se concentration was 2.72 μg/g d.w. in red deer and 2.99 μg/g d.w. in roe deer. In roe deer, liver selenium concentration in autumn was significantly higher than in winter (P < 0.05) and spring (P < 0.01) and significantly lower in spring than in summer (P < 0.05); likewise, kidney selenium concentration was higher in autumn than in summer. In deer, no statistically significant season-related differences were observed for liver selenium concentrations. In red deer kidneys, selenium concentration was the lowest in summer, significantly lower than in autumn and winter. Low selenium concentrations in the analyzed tissues show that the animals live in areas deficient in this element.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine liver and kidney concentrations of selenium in wild boars from the northwest part of Poland, depending on season of the year, age, sex, and body weight. Altogether, samples of livers and kidneys from 172 wild boars that were shot in 2005–2008 were investigated. Liver and kidney concentrations of selenium were determined using spectrofluorometric method. In all the animals studied, selenium concentration was several times lower in the liver than in the kidneys. Selenium concentration averaged 0.19 μg/g wet weight (w.w.) in the liver and 1.20 μg/g w.w. in kidneys. The present study showed that season (P ≤ 0.05), age (P ≤ 0.01), and body weight (P ≤ 0.01) have a significant effect on selenium concentration in the liver of wild boars. Liver selenium concentration was the highest in spring (0.23 μg/g w.w.) and the lowest in autumn (0.16 μg/g w.w). Young animals (up to 1 year of age) and those with the lowest body weight (up to 20 kg) were characterized by a slightly lower selenium concentration in the liver compared to older and heavier animals. No significant differences were found in organ selenium concentration between males and females. According to biochemical criteria for the diagnosis of selenium deficiency in pig liver, which were used to evaluate selenium concentration in the liver of wild boars, no individuals were found to have optimal levels. Considering that in Se deficiency higher selenium concentrations are found in kidneys than in the liver, it can be presumed that the wild boars had Se deficiency. However, this is difficult to state conclusively because there are no reference values for this species.  相似文献

The potential role of roe deer as a sylvatic reservoir of Bartonella in north-west Poland has been assessed. In addition, ticks infesting roe deer were screened to assess their role as a vector and reservoir of Bartonella. Blood and tissue samples of 72 animals from north-western Poland were PCR-screened. Bartonella DNA was detected by using primers complementary to the intergenic spacer between the 16S and 23S rRNA genes, which is used for identification of over a dozen species of this genus. Products of three different sizes were detected: 230 and 290 bp, representative of two strains of Bartonella capreoli, and 190 bp, identified as Bartonella bovis. All the three amplicons were detected in the blood, spleen and liver from the roe deer. All samples from the heart, lungs and kidneys were PCR negative. In ticks (Ixodes ricinus), only the 290 bp fragment from B. capreoli was present. Generally, Bartonella infection rate in Capreolus capreolus amounted to 27.6% of the roe deer, but it was much higher during winter (62%) than in spring (6.9%). The results show that the roe deer may be a reservoir for B. capreoli and B. bovis. The infection detected in I. ricinus ticks (7.7%) suggests that ticks may act as a Bartonella reservoir and vector.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity in the liver of red deer in relation to selenium concentrations in the liver, as well as to evaluate changes in GSHPx activity according to sex, body weight and season of the year. Total selenium concentration in the liver of red deer averaged 0.095?±?0.018?μg/g of wet weight. GSHPx activity in the liver of red deer ranged widely from 4.4 to 45.8?U/g of protein. Females were characterized by higher GSHPx activity compared to males (21.2 vs. 17.0?U/g protein). The highest GSHPx activity was recorded in autumn and the lowest in summer. The lowest GSHPx activity in the liver was found in the heaviest animals (>100?kg body weight), averaging 14.0?U/g protein. Animals weighing <66?kg and 66-100?kg were characterized by similar activity of 25.1 and 24.5?U/g, respectively. Despite the differences in GSHPx activity according to sex, body weight and season of the year, these factors had no significant effect on the activity of this enzyme. The main factor regulating GSHPx activity in the liver of examined red deer was selenium concentration.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to (1) determine the selenium concentration in the renal cortex, liver, and hair in 64 residents from northern Poland (Gdańsk region) aged 17–81 yr, who died suddenly, and (2) assess whether a correlation between the selenium concentration in hair and in the renal cortex and liver occurs. Selenium was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry using the hydride generation method. The mean selenium concentration in the renal cortex, liver, and hair in the investigated persons was 0.791±0.191 μg/g (wet weight), 0.289±0.084 μg/g (wet weight), and 0.443±0.128 μg/g, respectively. No age-dependent differences in selenium level in the investigated tissues was found. Also, no correlation between the selenium concentrations in hair and in renal cortex and liver was assessed.  相似文献

General health, clinical-chemical blood analysis and copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se) and vitamin E concentrations in plasma and liver tissue (wet weight, ww) of two extensive grazing sheep flocks without mineral supply were compared to the status of local roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) populations (liver samples). Both sheep flocks were classified as healthy except for a remarkable variation in body weight and a slight foot rot infection in one flock. Hematology of sheep was normal, and total protein and creatinine as well as activities of creatin kinase, aspartat-amino-transferase, alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl-transferase in plasma were within reference levels. The mean of glutamate dehydrogenase (13.8 U/l) was slightly elevated in one flock. Mean liver concentrations of Zn (38.9 and 43.5 mg/kg ww) and Cu (111 and 87.5 mg/kg ww) in sheep flocks were higher compared to the respective roe deer populations (27.5 and 36.3 mg Zn/kg ww; 18.3 and 28.6 mg Cu/kg ww). This is supposed to be caused by differences in Cu and Zn metabolism in sheep and roe deer. Selenium deficiency was diagnosed in liver samples of both sheep flocks (0.21 and 0.23 mg/kg ww). There were neither significant differences compared to roe deer (0.21 and 0.27 mg Se/kg ww) nor differences depending on location. Correlations between plasma and liver concentrations of Cu, Zn and Se were not significant in sheep. Means of vitamin E in liver samples (30.6 and 41.8 mg/kg ww) were higher in roe deer populations. This may be caused by the opportunity of selective browsing for wild ruminants, which allows access to younger plants which are higher in vitamin E.  相似文献

The effect of two different doses of selenium [1 and 50 μg selenium/100 g body weight (wt)] on nicotine-induced oxidative damage in liver was investigated in experimental rats. Male albino rats were maintained for 60 days as follows: (1) control group (normal diet), (2) nicotine group (0.6 mg/kg body wt)/day, (3) high-dose selenium (50 μg/100 g body wt)/day, (4) high-dose selenium (50 μg/100 g body wt) + nicotine (0.6 mg/kg body wt)/day, (5) low-dose selenium (1 μg/100 g body wt)/day, and (6) low-dose selenium (1 μg/100 g body wt) + nicotine (0.6 mg/kg body wt)/day. Nicotine administration caused a decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, an increase in the concentration of lipid peroxidation products and protein carbonyls and an increase in the activity of nitric oxide synthase compared to the control group. Coadministration of nicotine and selenium reduced the concentration of lipid peroxidation products and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes compared to the nicotine group. Selenium also enhanced the metabolism of nicotine. The antioxidant effect was more significant in the group administered a low dose of selenium.  相似文献

Eight young female camels shared in four groups of two 2 years received a basal diet enriched respectively with 0, 2, 4, and 8 mg selenium under sodium selenite form for 64 days. Feed intake was assessed daily; blood samples were taken on weekly basis. One camel from each group was killed at the end of the experiment. Se concentration in serum was increased significantly in the supplemented groups with an average of 176.3 ± 18.0 ng/mL in the control group, 382.7 ± 107.6 in the group receiving 2 mg Se, 519.8 ± 168.4 in the group receiving 4 mg Se, and 533.4 ± 158.6 in the group receiving 8 mg Se daily. For glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, the control group (51.0 IU/g Hb) and the group receiving 2 mg (50.5 IU/g Hb) were significantly different than groups receiving 4 and 8 mg (respectively, 65.9 and 76.1 IU/g Hb). No significant variation occurred for vitamin E (mean, 0.56 ± 0.23 ng/mL). Significant correlation between serum Se and GSH-Px was reported. Kidney was the richest organ in selenium followed by lung, spleen, and liver, but the increase in supplemented groups was more marked in liver and kidney. The hair seemed to be the best indicator of selenium intake in camel.  相似文献

The aim of this trial was to compare the effect of long-term supplementation of goats with different forms of selenium on body reserves of selenium in their kids at the time of weaning. Thirty-three pregnant goats were divided into five groups. Group C was control while the other four groups were supplemented with selenium (Se) for 6 weeks before parturition (0.3 mg/goat/day) and after parturition (0.9 mg/goat/day). Group “Se-I” received sodium selenite and three other groups received organic forms: “Se-L,” lactate–protein complex; “Se-P,” Se-proteinate; and “Se-Y,” Se-yeast. The kids were weaned at 3 months of age and samples of tissues (liver, pancreas, myocardium, lungs, kidneys, spleen, thigh, tongue, and diaphragm) were taken after slaughtering. The long-term supplementation of goats with Se influenced Se concentration in all examined tissues of kids. Significant differences (p ≤ 0.01) were found between the control and all experimental groups, except for the renal cortex and pancreas (Se-I). The average increase of Se concentration in overall examined tissues in comparison with the control (100%) was as follows: Se-Y, 192%; Se-P, 167%; Se-L, 161%; Se-I, 144%. The highest efficiency was found in the group supplemented with Se-yeast with a high content of selenomethionine, also the other two organic forms of Se were more efficient than the inorganic form.  相似文献

The retention of cadmium and selenium influence on Cd retention in the muscle, liver and kidneys of hens, chickens and in eggs was studied. Cadmium (Cd) as cadmium chloride (CdCl(2)) and selenium (Se) as sodium selenite (Na(2)SeO(3)) were added to feed at dosages: group 0-control, group 1-20 mg/kg Cd, group 2-30 mg/kg Cd + 4 mg/kg Se. The birds were exposed to Cd for 8 weeks. Cadmium level in hens and cocks was found highest in the kidneys, followed by the liver and muscle. Se supplementation resulted in Cd increase in the muscle tissue and in the reduction of Cd content in the liver and in significant decrease in the kidneys (p < 0.05). A higher Cd level in the yolk and lower in the white was noted in both experimental groups. Nonsignificant increase of Cd in eggs was noted in experimental groups with Se supplementation. Level of cadmium in organs of 7-day-old chicks hatched from Cd-treated hens in both experimental groups was low but the tendency to accumulate preferentially the Cd in the liver and kidneys was recorded. Supplementation of selenium in hens and cocks was not reflected in the decrease of Cd in these two organs of F(1) chickens but was reflected in increase in the muscle. In spite of relatively high Cd levels in the organs of layers no layer-egg-chickens transfer was observed. It was confirm that kidneys and liver are organs more attacked by dietary cadmium than muscle. Supplementation of low dose of Se resulted in decrease of cadmium deposition in analyzed organs.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the concentration of selenium and selected heavy metals and their possible relationship in serum of 25 healthy lactating cows (Montbéliarde) reared in a non-polluted area, in the western part of Poland. Cadmium, lead, copper, and zinc concentrations were determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and Se concentration was determined fluorimetrically. The content of Se, Zn, and Cu was 0.083?±?0.026, 0.629?±?0.413, and 0.152?±?0.042?μg/mL, respectively. The presence of the Cd and Pb was found in all serum samples. Recently, considerable attention has been paid to the negative effects caused by the presence and constant increase in concentration of heavy metals in the environment, as well as to the determination of their content in human biological samples. In this paper, the concentration of chromium in samples of blood and internal organs collected at autopsy from 21 female and 39 male non-occupationally exposed subjects is presented. Elemental analysis was carried out by an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer after microwave-assisted acid digestion. Reference ranges of chromium in the blood, brain, stomach, liver, kidneys, lungs, and heart (wet weight) in the population of Southern Poland were found to be 0.11–16.4 ng/mL, 4.7–136 ng/g, 6.1–76.4 ng/g, 11–506 ng/g, 2.9–298 ng/g, 13–798 ng/g, and 3.6–320 ng/g, respectively.  相似文献

Introgressive hybridization is a widespread evolutionary phenomenon which may lead to increased allelic variation at selective neutral loci and to transfer of fitness‐related traits to introgressed lineages. We inferred the population genetic structure of the European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Poland from mitochondrial (CR and cyt b) and sex‐linked markers (ZFX, SRY, DBY4 and DBY8). Analyses of CR mtDNA sequences from 452 individuals indicated widespread introgression of Siberian roe deer (C. pygargus) mtDNA in the European roe deer genome, 2000 km from the current distribution range of C. pygargus. Introgressed individuals constituted 16.6% of the deer studied. Nearly 75% of them possessed haplotypes belonging to the group which arose 23 kyr ago and have not been detected within the natural range of Siberian roe deer, indicating that majority of present introgression has ancient origin. Unlike the mtDNA results, sex‐specific markers did not show signs of introgression. Species distribution modelling analyses suggested that C. pygargus could have extended its range as far west as Central Europe after last glacial maximum. The main hybridization event was probably associated with range expansion of the most abundant European roe deer lineage from western refugia and took place in Central Europe after the Younger Dryas (10.8–10.0 ka BP). Initially, introgressed mtDNA variants could have spread out on the wave of expansion through the mechanism of gene surfing, reaching high frequencies in European roe deer populations and leading to observed asymmetrical gene flow. Human‐mediated introductions of C. pygargus had minimal effect on the extent of mtDNA introgression.  相似文献

Our current knowledge of microbiota in wild ruminants is limited. The goal of this study was to evaluate staphylococcal species in red and roe deer for various attributes (haemolysis, DNase, and urease activities; lactic acid and biofilm production; and antibiotic profile) and their susceptibility to gallidermin. Sixteen staphylococcal strains were identified from faeces of 21 free-living animals (9 adult female Cervus elaphus—red deer and 12 young female Capreolus capreolus—roe deer) sampled by the Polish colleagues in the Strzałowo Forest District, Piska Primaeval Forest. The variability in the species of staphylococci was determined. Seven species (Staphylococcus capitis, S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, S. hominis, S. pseudintermedius, S. vitulinus and S. warneri) and five clusters/groups of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were identified. The strains were generally not haemolytic and Dnase negative; did not form biofilms or only produced low-grade biofilms; exhibited high levels of lactic acid; were urease positive; and were generally susceptible to antibiotics (only two strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics). However, all of the strains were susceptible to the lantibiotic bacteriocin gallidermin, with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.0156 μg (up to 6400 AU/ml in arbitrary units). This is the first study to perform a detailed study of the properties of CoNS from roe and red deer.

During the 2007 and 2008 hunting seasons (April–October) the skin of 367 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.), hunted in different preserves from Galicia (Northwestern Spain), were examined for ticks (Acari: Ixodidae). The overall prevalence of infestation by ticks was 83.1%. The predominant species was Ixodes ricinus (83.1%), whereas a single Dermacentor marginatus specimen appeared in one roe deer. All developmental stages of I. ricinus were found parasitizing roe deer, the adults being the most frequent (82.2%), followed by nymphs (45.6%) and larvae (27.2%). The mean intensity of infestation by I. ricinus was 43.2 ± 49.85; most of them were adults (30.7 ± 31.64) and in a lesser extend nymphs (16.9 ± 24.74) and larvae (10.7 ± 29.90). Ixodes ricinus was present all over the study with percentages that oscillated between 100% in spring and 57.4% in autumn. CHAID algorithm showed the sex of roe deer as the most influential factor in tick prevalence, followed by the climatic area. The different developmental stages of I. ricinus were more frequent in males than in females, and the prevalence of adults and larvae were higher in roe deer from coastal areas than in those from mountainous and central areas, whereas nymphs were more frequent in mountainous areas. Host age and density were not determinants for tick infestation. Our results confirm that roe deer are important hosts for I. ricinus in northwestern Spain, serving as a vehicle for the geographic distribution of these ticks.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess hair selenium levels of liver patients suffering from hepatic simple steatosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in central areas of China. Selenium was measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with the hydride generation system. The levels of selenium in healthy individuals ranged between 0.3 and 0.9 μg/g, and mean hair selenium levels in the male population and female population were 0.59?±?0.18 and 0.57?±?0.15 μg/g, respectively. These concentrations did not vary significantly (P?>?0.05) in relation to the gender. One hundred-eighteen individuals of both sexes aged between 15 and 60 years with hepatic simple steatosis and NASH were selected for this study. The mean and standard deviation of hair selenium concentrations observed in male and female patients with hepatic simple steatosis were 0.54?±?0.16 and 0.50?±?0.15 μg/g, respectively, while the mean and standard deviation of hair selenium concentrations observed in male and female patients with NASH were 0.40?±?0.14 and 0.41?±?0.12 μg/g. Analysis of t test showed a significant difference between NASH (P?<?0.001) patients in hair selenium concentrations when compared with controls.  相似文献

We studied organ concentration, excretion and excreted forms of selenium in young and adult rats after a single s.c. injection of a sublethal dose of 75Se-selenite. In the young about a 10-fold higher concentration of 75Se in blood, liver, kidneys and In the young, about a 10-fold higher concentration of 75Se in blood, liver, kidneys and heart was found at all the experimental intervals studied (1-7 days). The highest 75Se concentration in the young was in the liver while in the adults it was found in the kidneys. The spectrum of radioselenium metabolites in the urine was the same in both groups. However, the main product excreted by young rats was 75Se-glutathione selenotrisulphide and an unidentified neutral substance while it was the trimethylselenonium ion in the adults. Ontogenetic differences in selenium metabolism could be one of the factors underlying the differences in the response of the young and the adult rats to toxic doses of selenite.  相似文献

In order to investigate the selenite metabolism in the anterior pituitary and compare it with other endocrine organs, rats were injected intraperitoneally with75Se sodium selenite (5 mg/kg). The rats were whole body counted shortly after injection and recounted just before sacrifice, which was performed 2, 24, 48 h, and 4, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80 d after injection. Besides the anterior pituitary, the selenium content was also estimated in the thyroid gland, testis, adrenals, liver, kidney, and blood. The maximum selenium content was observed in all organs 2 h after injection, at which time the anterior pituitary contained 2.9 μg/g wet wt, compared to 13.5 μ/g wet wt in liver and .6 μg/mg wet wt in testis. The excretion of selenite from the anterior pituitary resembled that seen in most other organs investigated, i.e., an initial rapid excretion and a slower secondary phase resembling a first order reaction. Practically all selenium was excreted by 60 d after injection.  相似文献
