Muscular activity patterns in red and white muscles linked to oxygen consumption were studied during critical swimming tests in the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax Linnaeus 1758). The species is one of the most important for Mediterranean Sea aquaculture. A sigmoid model was used to fit both the oxygen consumption and red muscle activity while the white muscle activity pattern was described by an exponential model. Red muscle reaches an activation plateau close to critical swimming speed mostly due to the oxygen diffusion velocity in tissues. The exponential activation of white muscle appears to be linked to short and sudden periods of great energy need to cope with adverse conditions such as predation and escape. Both oxygen consumption and muscular activity were found to be size dependent. The bioenergetics of sea bass was modelled based on fish mass and swimming speed to predict the minimum and maximum speed as well as the mass-specific active metabolic rate and standard metabolic rate. An important finding was that contrary to other well-known species, swimming at subcritical speeds in sea bass involves both red and white muscle in different proportions.  相似文献

Growth rate and assimilation of essential fatty acids were analysed in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) fed different diets. Gas Chromatographie analyses of total lipids in commercial diets indicated excessive presence of saturated, mono and dienoic fatty acids, while the content of to 3 HUFA was very low. Fatty acid patterns of liver and white muscle farmed sea bass reflected the contents of the dietary lipids. The concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly ω3 HUFA was significantly lower when compared with samples from the wild population. The atherogenic and fish lipid quality indices confirmed the higher nutritional quality of wild sea bass when compared with farmed fishes.  相似文献

The hydrolytic F(1)-part of the F(1)F(0)-ATPase was over-expressed in Lactobacillus (L.) plantarum NC8 and L. sakei Lb790x during fermentation of glucose or ribose, in order to study how changes in the intracellular levels of ATP and ADP affect the metabolic fluxes. The uncoupled ATPase activity resulted in a decrease in intracellular energy level (ATP/ADP ratio), biomass yield and growth rate. Interestingly, the glycolytic and ribolytic flux increased in L. plantarum with uncoupled ATPase activity compared to the reference strain by up to 20% and 50%, respectively. The ATP demand was estimated to have approximately 80% control on both the glycolytic and ribolytic flux in L. plantarum under these conditions. In contrast, the glycolytic and ribolytic flux decreased in L. sakei with uncoupled ATPase activity.  相似文献

Heart activity of Pecten maximus (L.) has been recorded during various forms of experimentally induced respiratory stress. There was considerable variation in the responses of individual scallops but bradycardia generally occurred in response to all forms of respiratory stress, with the rate of fall in heart rate dependent upon the severity of hypoxia.When oxygen tension declined slowly in a closed respirometer there was regulation of both heart rate and oxygen consumption. The critical tension, Pc, for oxygen consumption lay between 70 and 80 mm Hg, and corresponded with a slight regulatory upswing of the heart rate, whereas the Pc for heart rate was much lower at 20–30 mm Hg. Sudden transfer to deoxygenated water for 3 h resulted in very rapid bradycardia and there was a rapid recovery and initial overshoot of the normal rate on return to well-oxygenated sea water. Aerial exposure for 3 h produced more gradual bradycardia followed by gradual recovery on return to sea water.The results of this work are compared in some detail with previous work on other species of bivalve from different geographical areas and habitats, and the mechanisms controlling cardiac and respiratory regulation are discussed. It is concluded that there are few clear-cut general differences between littoral and sublittoral species in their behavioural and physiological adaptations to hypoxia; the main distinguishing feature of littoral-adapted species is their ability to control air-gaping. Changes in heart activity generally indicate variations in metabolic rate, the speed at which the metabolic rate may be altered reflecting the degree of adaptation to the littoral environment.  相似文献

A decline in bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix L.) recreational landings during the 1990s and the early 2000s led to multiple theories on the ultimate cause. One theory was that a large portion of the bluefish population moved offshore and was unavailable to nearshore recreational fishers; one reason given for the movement offshore was increased competition with striped bass (Morone saxatilis W.). We conducted laboratory experiments (feeding and non-feeding) to examine behavioral interactions between adult bluefish and sub-adult striped bass in a large (121,000 L) research aquarium. Additionally, we examined diet and habitat overlap of bluefish and striped bass from the fall and spring bottom trawl surveys conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Observations of feeding trials for the following treatments were made: non-impaired (i.e., same number and size of bluefish and striped bass), size-impaired (i.e., large striped bass/small bluefish), number-impaired (i.e.,10 striped bass/3bluefish), and single-species controls. Within a species, there was no difference in a variety of behavioral measures (e.g., attack rate, capture success, ingestion rate, and activity) between mixed- and control treatments under non-impaired or size-impaired conditions. However, behavior of number-impaired bluefish differed from control and size-impaired fish suggesting that striped bass may have a negative influence on bluefish foraging when bluefish are “out-numbered”. Feeding had a strong effect on swimming speeds for both species. Diet and habitat overlap between bluefish and striped bass in continental shelf waters was low. Overall, foraging behavior in mixed-species treatments and field observations suggest no competitive interactions between adult bluefish and sub-adult striped bass.  相似文献

The settlement and growth conditions of three 0-group flatfish species, sole (Solea solea L.), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) and dab (Limanda limanda L.) in the Bay of Canche, French coast of the Eastern English Channel, were investigated during summer 1997. 0-group dab were the more abundant of the three species (75.4%) followed by plaice (21%) and sole (3.6%). Analyses of fish size distribution indicated that settlement of plaice occurred before sole and dab. Growth of sole was faster than that of plaice, which in turn was faster than that of dab (0.68, 0.43 and 0.33 mm d?1 respectively). Sole differed from plaice and dab by their larger mean length attained at the end of their first summer stay in the nursery ground. Growth performances of 0-group sole and plaice were analysed by comparing estimated growth in the field with predicted maximum growth according to temperature-growth rate models from experimental studies of growth with unlimited food supply. The data of this study suggest that plaice growth may have been limited during late summer, whereas sole growth does appear to have been determined only by water temperature.  相似文献

A sensitive and quantitative one step RT-qPCR method was developed to study Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) virus loads in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) in hatcheries. After determining the limits of this new method, fin tissues were identified as an interesting new simple non-invasive sample source, which might be useful for screening D. labrax (L.) in hatcheries. We observed VNN virus strain V26 associated to D. labrax (L.) eggs and it’s release in tank water during spawning suggesting both vertical transmission to the eggs and the possibility of horizontal transmission by contamination of tank water. VNN is widespread in water bodies and has the ability to infect a large number of fish species, with this in mind, this PCR technique may be used for the surveillance of various fish farms.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption of adult burbot, Lota lota (L.), was examined to determine the effects of fasting and meal ration on oxygen consumption rates. The temperature (2.1 °C) was selected to represent ambient conditions for burbot in winter. The average pre‐feeding oxygen consumption rate was 29.5 mg kg?1 h?1. Feeding affected the oxygen consumption rates since the apparent heat increment correlated significantly with the meal ration. However, the meal ration (i.e. vendace, Coregonus albula L.) did not affect the proportion of the ingested meal energy used in the apparent heat increment. When the meal ration was increased, peak oxygen consumption ranged from 1.2 to 2.2 times higher than the fasting level. Observed low oxygen consumption values suggest that the metabolic processes of burbot are strongly reduced in low temperatures.  相似文献

For pike in the laboratory, the relationship between heart rate (fH) and oxygen consumption ( VO2 , mg h−1 standardized to a 500-g fish weight) can be described by a significant linear regression valid for heart rates below 55 beats min−1. Heart rate increases during activity and feeding, accurately reflecting fluctuations in metabolic rate; so it can be used as a measure of metabolic rate in the field, using heart beat telemetry techniques. Post-prandial heart rates are elevated, and closely correlated with the calorific value of the food taken in the preceding meal. Meal size can be estimated from the heart rate record with an error of less than 10%.  相似文献

The haemoglobins and globins of bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) have been studied by starch and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Five haemoglobin components were found. These haemoglobins appear to result from the combination of four different globin monomers. The molecular weight of the pooled haemoglobin is about 54 400, confirming its tetrameric form. The evolutionary significance of multiple haemoglobins is discussed.  相似文献

Specific growth rate, average daily food intake, gross conversion efficiency, plasma total lipids, triglycerides, total cholesterol and glucose were evaluated annually in a population of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) intensively reared in floating marine cages. These data are aimed at improving productivity and allows more precise limits to be placed on the hematological parameters which are a necessary precondition for the assessment of fish condition and health. Specific growth rate (%), average daily food intake (%) and gross conversion efficiency showed relatively higher values in the warm spring and summer months. The specific growth rate correlated better with the seawater temperature and the average daily food intake than with the photoperiod. The concentrations of plasma total lipids, triglycerides and glucose were higher in summer. Plasma total cholesterol concentrations were higher during the pregametogenesis and gametogenesis periods. Plasma triglycerides correlated better with photoperiod and plasma glucose than with the seawater temperature.  相似文献

Simultaneous recordings of the activity of the heart and both scaphognathites of Carcinus maenas (L.) were investigated during a wide repertoire of normal activities. The scope of activity for the heart and scaphognathites could usefully be subdivided into three smaller ranges or levels which, although arbitrary, were recognizable on the basis of frequency and arrhythmic phenomena.Alterations of heart and scaphognathite activity induced by a variety of laboratory treatments were investigated in order to evaluate and aid the interpretation of such data for comparative purposes. Providing the recent manipulative history of the animal is known, the behaviours of heart and scaphognathites have been shown to be predictable and useful as sensitive sources of comparative data.The observed behaviour of the heart and scaphognathites has been discussed in terms of their nervous control systems and of their implications in a variable system of blood circulation and gill ventilation.  相似文献

Some cases of Robertsonian (Rb) polymorphism in the common shrew (Sorex araneus L.) are believed not to be associated with hybrid zones. One of the hypotheses explaining the persistence of such Rb polymorphism is that they are maintained by some form of selection for Rb heterozygotes. To test this hypothesis, we compared several parameters between homozygotes and Rb heterozygotes for the mp chromosome pair. We used shrews from Jurowce population in Poland, situated within the range of the Bia?owieza race, where Rb polymorphism persists far from any known hybrid zone. We found no differences between the two karyotypic classes in maximum metabolic rate during running (forced activity). However, the Rb heterozygotes showed significantly higher maximum metabolic rate during swimming (forced activity combined with thermal stress). The levels of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of homozygous and Rb heterozygous shrews were indistinguishable, indicating no effect of chromosomal heterozygosity on developmental stability of shrews. We suggest that selective advantages, such as the higher metabolic performance in activity combined with cold stress, may outweigh the expected negative effects of Rb heterozygosity upon fertility, and help to maintain huge areas of the Rb polymorphism in this species.  相似文献

The temperature sex determination (TSD) mechanism in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) was studied in respect to: a) the TSD sensitivity during the different developmental stages; and b) the intrapopulation correlation of sex determination with the growth rate up to the end of the TSD-sensitive period. At the stage of half-epiboly, eggs from the same batch were divided into four groups and subjected to different thermal treatments: a) 15 degrees C (G15 group) and b) 20 degrees C (G20 group) up to the middle of metamorphosis stage; c) 15 degrees C up to the end of yolk-sac larval stage and subsequently to 20 degrees C (G15-5 group); and d) 15 degrees C up to the end of the preflexion stage and then to 20 degrees C (G15-10 group). At the end of the treatments, size grading was applied and four additional populations were established from the upper (L) and lower (S) size portions of the G15 and G20 populations: G15L, G15S, G20L, and G20S. During the following growing phase, all populations were subjected to common rearing conditions. The sex ratios of each population were macroscopically determined at 190-210 mm mean total length. Female incidence was significantly affected (P < 0.05) by the different thermal treatments: 66.1% in the G15, 47.1% in the G15-10, 37.6% in the G15-5, and 18.1% in the G20 group. In addition, sex ratio was correlated with the growth rate of the fish up to the end of the TSD-sensitive period, with the larger fish presenting a significantly higher (P < 0.01) female incidence than the smaller fish in both thermal regimes tested: 73.1% in G15L vs. 57% in G15S, and 36.6% in G20L vs. 22.5% in G20S group. Results provide, for the first time, clear evidence that the sea bass is sensitive to TSD during all different ontogenetic stages up to metamorphosis, and that sex ratio is correlated with the growth rate of the fish well before the differentiation and maturation of the gonads.  相似文献

The study of the rate of oxygen consumption by Nephrops norvegicius (L.) at each moulting stage has been carried out in closed respiration chambers, using an oxygen electrode to measure the oxygen concentration.Although the mean respiration rate seems to be low when compared with other decapod crustaceans of similar weight, the general trends of the variation of the oxygen consumption during the moulting cycle are similar to those described for other species of decapods. It should be noted that, during the process of the ecdysis, there is no oxygen consumption.  相似文献

The mayfly, Leptophlebia vespertina (L.) was reared at field temperatures in the laboratory. The egg incubation period was 21–26 days. There were seventeen to nineteen nymphal instars. Growth was generally rapid during the first 3½ months and slow thereafter. This change occurred at the same time in both the laboratory and the field population. Body weight gain, food intake, gastrocnemius muscle and liver weight, protein and RNA content, as well as the fractional rates of muscle and liver protein synthesis (ks, according to the method of constant infusion of L-[14C]tyrosine), growth (kg) and degradation (kd), along with RNA activity (g of protein synthesized per day/g RNA) of both organs, were determined in growing male rats fed ad libitum over a period of 10 days on 18.7% protein diets containing either casein (5% of methionine added) (control) or the raw legume field bean (Vicia faba L.) as the sole sources of protein. It has been found that as compared to control rats, those fed the raw legume diet exhibited a significant reduction in the rate of growth, muscle RNA, ks, kg, kd and RNA activity, and a significant increase in liver ks, kd and RNA activity. All differences were statistically significant at least at the 5% level. The possible nature of these findings is discussed.  相似文献

Larvae of Rutilus rutilus (L.) weighing approx. 40 mg were exercised for 5 min by mechanical stimulation. Individual larvae were taken before and immediately after stimulation, and during 2 h of recovery. The concentrations of glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, pyruvate, lactate, 2-oxoglutarate, and ascorbic acid were determined in individual larvae. The larvae recovered faster from forced activity than juvenile roach, recovery being complete after 1 h. Larvae also differed from juveniles in that metabolite levels increased less during activity. It is suggested that the combination of low glycolytic, and high oxidative capacity was responsible for the specific metabolic responses of the larvae.  相似文献

Heart rate telemetry records of up to 5 days duration were obtained from pike living in Lochs Kinord and Davan, Scotland. Applying metabolic rate correlations it was found that mean metabolic rate (R) was 1.5 times standard metabolic rate (Ra), The fish rarely worked near their metabolic limits. Activity metabolism (Ra) was much higher than estimates based on mean swimming speed and comprised up to 10% of R. Most activity metabolism was the result of localized bursts of activity. Less than 10% of activity showed evidence of oxygen debt. Specific Dynamic Action or feeding metabolism (Rf) comprised 15–25% of R. Food intake estimated from heart rate was 1.5% wet body weight day−1, consumed in the form of small items captured during the day and digested during the afternoon and night.  相似文献

The leishmanicidal activity of four batches of meglumine antimoniate, produced in Farmanguinhos-Fiocruz, Brazil (TAMs), was assessed and compared to Glucantime(R)-Aventis Pharma Ltda. Using the amastigote-like in vitro model, the active concentrations of Sb v varied from 10microg/ml to 300 microg/ml for L. (L.) chagasi and from 50microg/ml to 300microg/ml for L. (L.) amazonensis, with no statistically significant differences among the four batches of TAMs and Glucantime(R). The inhibitory concentrations (IC50) determined by the amastigote-infected macrophage model for TAM01/03 and Glucantime(R) were, respectively: 26.3microg/ml and 127.6microg/ml for L. chagasi, 15.4microg /ml and 22.9microg/ml for L. amazonensis, and 12.1microg/ml and 24.2microg/ml for L. (V.) braziliensis. The activities of the four batches of TAMs were confirmed in an in vivo model by assessing, during eight weeks skin lesions caused by L. braziliensis in hamster that were treated with 20mg Sb v/Kg/day for 30 consecutive days. The meglumine antimoniate produced by Farmanguinhos was as effective as the reference drug, Glucantime(R)-Aventis, against three species of Leishmania that are of medical importance in Brazil.  相似文献
