Stem guying to prevent wind-induced swaying of radiata pine trees resulted in significant changes in radial growth, but did not affect the frequency of compression wood or resin features.

Abstract

Mechanical stress resulting from wind forces acting on trees can cause a number of direct and indirect effects ranging from microscopic changes in cambial activity through to stem breakage and uprooting. To better understand these effects on radial stem growth and wood properties, an experiment was established in a 13-year-old radiata pine (Pinus radiata D Don) stand in which 20 trees were guyed to prevent them from swaying. Radial growth was monitored in these trees and 20 matched controls at monthly intervals for 5 years. The trees were then felled and radial growth, resin features and compression wood were assessed on cross-sectional discs taken at fixed locations up the stem. There was a significant reduction in radial growth at breast height (1.4 m above the ground) in the guyed trees, but an increase in growth immediately above the guying point. A total of 277 resin features were observed in the growth rings formed following guying. The overall frequency of such features was related to height within the stem and annual ring number. No effect of stem guying was found on the incidence of compression wood. Interestingly, the distribution of resin features also did not differ between guyed and un-guyed trees. There was no evidence of a link between stem restraint as a result of guying and the incidence of resin features, suggesting that other factors, such as soil moisture may be more influential.  相似文献

The climbing crab Sesarma leptosoma colonizes the mangrove roots and canopy of East African mangrove swamps, an intricate three-dimensional habitat in which it orients itself visually. To ascertain if vision helps this tree crab to detect dangers such as predators, we used dummy objects: (1) a preserved specimen of its predator, the crab Epixanthus dentatus in its typical ambush posture; (2) a piece of wood with real E. dentatus claws attached to it, the same size as, and painted to resemble (to the human eye), this predator; and (3) a piece of wood the same size and colour as a live crab but without claws. When these dummies were presented to migrating S. leptosoma in the field, they stopped their normal migratory flow only when they were able to see the open claws of the predator. Thus S. leptosoma showed a considerable ability to perceive shape, being able to distinguish motionless objects of different shapes but similar size and to associate the detected shapes with the presence of danger.  相似文献

The degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was studied in liquid cultures of Bjerkandera adusta and Pleurotus ostreatus during 7 weeks of cultivation. During only 3 days of incubation, B. adusta removed 56% and 38% of fluorene and anthracene, while P. ostreatus degraded 43% and 60% of these compounds; other PAH were degraded to a lower extent. Except for anthracene in cultures of P. ostreatus, all PAH were removed uniformly during the cultivation time but fluorene and anthracene were degraded faster than other PAH. Supplementation of liquid cultures with milled wood decreased the concentration of PAH in the solution and diminished the degradation of PAH. The fungi produced valuable activity of manganese-dependent peroxidase; laccase was secreted only by P. ostreatus and was strongly induced by the addition of milled wood. The production of the oxidative enzymes did not correlate directly to the metabolisation of PAH.  相似文献

In the present study, 208 furniture and 168 coopered vessels from three Austrian museums were examined. Dendrochronology was used to date objects and to extract further information such as the necessary time for seasoning, wood loss through wood-working and methods of construction. In most cases sampling was done by sanding the cross section and making digital photographs using a picture frame and measuring digitally. The dendrochronological dates of the sampled furniture range between 1524 and 1937. The group of furniture includes cupboards, chests, tables, benches, commodes and beds. In many cases furniture was artfully painted and sometimes even shows a painted year. With the help of dendrochronology it was proved that some objects had been painted for some time after construction, or had been over-painted. Most furniture, however, was painted immediately after completion. In this case, the seasoning and storage time of the boards and the wood loss due to shaping can be verified. As an average value, 14 years have passed between the dendrochronological date of the outermost ring and the painting. The time span includes time of seasoning and storage and the rings lost by wood-working. This leads, on the one hand to a short storage time of less than 10 years and on the other hand to very little wood loss due to manufacturing. Those boards being less shaped turned out to be back panels of cupboards, therefore they are recommended to be sampled for dating.Coopered vessels were dated between 1612 and 1940. There was evidence that staves were split and not sawn in many cases. The staves were often split out of the outermost part of the tree and hardly any wood was worked away which was proved by the close dendrochronological dates of the single staves of a vessel.Since there is a short time of storage and only little wood loss through wood-working, dating of objects without a waney edge becomes reasonable.  相似文献

Enrichment cultures were obtained, after prolonged incubation on a shale oil as the sole source of nitrogen, that selectively degraded nitriles. Capillary gas chromatographic analyses showed that the mixed microbial populations in the enrichments degraded the homologous series of aliphatic nitriles but not the aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, or heterocyclic-nitrogen compounds found in this oil. Time course studies showed that lighter nitriles were removed more rapidly than higher-molecular-weight nitriles. A Pseudomonas fluorescens strain isolated from an enrichment, which was able to completely utilize the individual nitriles undecyl cyanide and undecanenitrile as sole sources of carbon and nitrogen, was unable to attack stearonitrile when provided alone as the growth substrate. A P. aeruginosa strain, also isolated from one of the enrichments, used nitriles but not aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons when the oil was used as a sole nitrogen source. However, when the shale oil was used as the sole source of carbon, aliphatic hydrocarbons in addition to nitriles were degraded but aromatic hydrocarbons were still not attacked by this P. aeruginosa strain.  相似文献

The main wood degraders in aerobic terrestrial ecosystems belong to the white- and brown-rot fungi, where their biomass can be created on wood decay only. However, total sulfur (S) concentration in wood is very low and only little is known about the different sulfur compounds in wood today. Sulfur-starved brown-rot fungi Gloeophyllum trabeum and Oligoporus placenta were incubated on sterilized pine wood blocks whereas Lentinus cyathiformis and the white-rot fungi Trametes versicolor were incubated on sterilized beech wood blocks. After 19 weeks of incubation, the S oxidation status was analyzed in wood, in degraded wood, and in biomass of wood-degrading fungi by synchrotron based S K-edge XANES, and total S and sulfate were quantified. Total sulfur and sulfate content in pine wood blocks were approximately 50 and 1 ??g g−1, respectively, while in beech wood approximately 100 and 20 ??g g−1 were found, respectively. Sulfur in beech was dominated by sulfate-esters. In contrast, pine wood also contained larger amounts of reduced S. Three out of four selected fungi caused a reduction of the S oxidation state in wood from oxidized S (sulfate-ester, sulfate) to intermediate S (sulfonate, sulfoxide) or reduced S (thiols, e.g., proteins, peptides, enzyme cofactors). Only O. placenta shifted thiol to sulfonate. Growth experiments of these fungi on selective minimal media showed that in particular cysteine (thiol), sulfonates, and sulfate enhanced total mycelium growth. Consequently, wood-degrading fungi were able to utilize a large variety of different wood S sources for growth but preferentially transformed in vivo sulfate-esters and thiol into biomass structures.  相似文献

The bactericidal activity of a general purpose disinfectant consisting of 25% sodium-o-phenylphenolate and 75% sodium-4- and 6-chloro-2-phenylphenolate was evaluated by a simulated in-use, surface-square dilution method. Common floor (asphalt, rubber, and unglazed tiles) and wall (stainless steel tile, ceramic tile, and painted wood) surfaces of various porosities and compositions were selected to simulate actual-use conditions.

The method used consisted of inoculating the surfaces of 1-in. square sections of floor and wall covering with a test organism, air-drying the inoculated surface, applying the disinfectant, allowing it to act for 10 min, and recovering the survivors by plating. Confirmatory results of the standard phenol coefficient and use-dilution tests indicated 700 ppm of the disinfectant to be a safe use concentration. The in-use surface-square dilution studies have shown that this is a more than adequate safe concentration for stainless steel, both glazed and unglazed ceramic tile, and nonwaxed surface of asphalt tile. However, concentrations ranging between 2,500 and 6,000 ppm for plastic-fortified rubber tile, 1,500 and 2,000 ppm for waxed asphalt tile, and 2,000 ppm for painted wood were required to achieve 99.9% reduction of either Salmonella choleraesuis or Salmonella schottmuelleri. These results indicate that a disinfectant concentration derived from the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists use-dilution test cannot always be relied upon to provide a dependable index to actual safe use-dilution when a disinfectant is supplied to certain wall or floor surfaces.

Essential oils and their constituents have a long history of applications as antimicrobial agents, but their use as wood preservatives has not yet been reported. In this study, 22 essential oil phenols, phenol ethers, and aromatic aldehydes have been tested for their antifungal activity against the wood-decaying fungi Trametes versicolor and Coniophora puteana. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of the selected compounds added to potato dextrose agar (PDA) in defined concentrations were determined by a screening test with the agar dilution method. A significant difference in the tolerance of the tested fungi towards the selected compounds was discovered and attributed to the differences in their metabolic characteristics. The influence of the chemical structure of the tested essential oil compounds on their antifungal activity is also discussed.  相似文献

The majority of terrestrial biomass is wood, but the elemental composition of its potential consumers, xylophages, differs hugely from that of wood. This causes a severe nutritional imbalance. We studied the stoichiometric relationships of 11 elements (C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Na) in three species of pine-xylem-feeding insects, Stictoleptura rubra, Arhopalus rusticus (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) and Chalcophora mariana (Coleoptera, Buprestidae), to elucidate their mechanisms of tissue growth and to match their life histories to their dietary constraints. These beetles do not differ from other Coleoptera in their absolute elemental compositions, which are approximately 1000 (N), 100 (P, Cu) and 50 (K, Na) times higher than in dead but undecayed pine wood. This discrepancy diminishes along the wood decay gradient, but the elemental concentrations remain higher by an order of magnitude in beetles than in highly decayed wood. Numerical simulation of the life history of S. rubra shows that feeding on nutrient-poor undecayed wood would extend its development time to implausible values, whereas feeding on highly decomposed wood (heavily infected with fungi) would barely balance its nutritional budget during the long development period of this species. The changes in stoichiometry indicate that the relative change in the nutrient levels in decaying wood cannot be attributed solely to carbon loss resulting from decomposer respiration: the action of fungi substantially enriches the decaying wood with nutritional elements imported from the outside of the system, making it a suitable food for wood-eating invertebrates.  相似文献

The laccate (shiny or varnished) Ganoderma contain fungi that are important wood decay fungi of living trees and decomposers of woody debris. They are also an important group of fungi for their degradative enzymes and bioprocessing potential. Laboratory decay microcosms (LDMs) were used to study the relative decay ability of G anoderma curtisii, Ganoderma meredithiae, Ganoderma sessile, and G anoderma zonatum, which are four commonly encountered Ganoderma species in the U.S., across four wood types (Pinus taeda, Quercus nigra, Q uercus virginiana, and Sabal palmetto). Generally, all Ganoderma species were able to decay all types of wood tested despite not being associated with only certain wood types in nature. G. sessile, on average caused the most decay across all wood types. Among the wood types tested, water oak (Q. nigra) had the most mass loss by all species of Ganoderma. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess micromorphological decay patterns across all treatments. All Ganoderma species simultaneously decayed wood cells of all wood types demonstrating their ability to attack all cell wall components. However, G. zonatum caused selective delignification in some sclerenchyma fibers of the vascular bundles in palm (S. palmetto) as well as in fibers of water oak. In addition, G. zonatum hyphae penetrated fibers of palm and oak wood causing an unusual decay not often observed in basidiomycetes resulting in cavity formation in secondary walls. Cavities within the secondary walls of fibers gradually expanded and coalesced resulting in degradation of the S2 layer. Differences in colony growth rates were observed when Ganoderma species were grown on medium amended with water soluble sapwood extracts from each wood type. G. meredithiae had enhanced growth on all media amended with sapwood extracts, while G. curtisii, G. sessile and G. zonatum had slower growth on loblolly pine extract amended medium.  相似文献

Fenton reactions are believed to play important roles in wood degradation by brown rot fungi. In this context, the effect of tropolone (2-hydroxycyclohepta-2,4,6-trienone), a metal chelator, on wood degradation by Poria placenta was investigated. Tropolone (50 μM) strongly inhibits fungal growth on malt agar, but this inhibition could be relieved by adding iron salts. With an experimental system containing two separate parts, one supplemented with tropolone (100 μM) and the other not, it was shown that the fungus is able to reallocate essential minerals from the area where they are available and also to grow in these conditions on malt-agar in the presence of tropolone. Nevertheless, even in the presence of an external source of metals, P. placenta is not able to attack pine blocks impregnated with tropolone (5 mM). This wood degradation inhibition is related to the presence of the tropolone hydroxyl group, as shown by the use of analogs (cyclohepta-2,4,6-trienone and 2-methoxycyclohepta-2,4,6-trienone). Furthermore, tropolone possesses both weak antioxidative and weak radical-scavenging properties and a strong affinity for ferric ion and is able to inhibit ferric iron reduction by catecholates, lowering the redox potential of the iron couple. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that tropolone inhibits wood degradation by P. placenta by chelating iron present in wood, thus avoiding initiation of the Fenton reaction. This study demonstrates that iron chelators such as tropolone could be also involved in novel and more environmentally benign preservative systems.  相似文献

Wood-feeding termites (WFT) have proven to be highly efficient for wood digestion. There is evidence to support the hypothesis that there are ligninolytic enzymes existing in the gut of WFT responsible for wood pretreatment toward cellulose utilization. Elucidating the mechanism of biomass pretreatment through lignin modification in termites will help to develop more efficient lignocellulosic biofuel production processes. The in-vivo degradation of aromatic compounds with different substructures, including dyes, lignin model monomers and dimers, and lignin sulfonate, by Coptotermes formosanus (Shiraki) was investigated. The degradation of aromatic compounds was determined using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The results revealed that WFT were able to metabolize the conjugated aromatic structures and that the degradation efficiency is higher in the foregut and midgut regions than in the hindgut. This is the first time that evidence has been provided to show different aromatic compound degradation in the separate gut segments of a termite. This study provides information on the C. formosanus (Shiraki) lignin modification phenomenon, and it demonstrates that phenomenon’s potential in the breakdown of the plant cell wall. Understanding this lignin modification could contribute to technology that will supplant current harsh pretreatment protocols for plant cell walls and thereby better facilitate the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose.  相似文献

Microclimatic conditions in dead wood influence fungal growth and hence also species composition, but it remains unclear how they influence species richness in nature. We analysed fungal species richness based on the occurrence of fruit bodies on 2 m long segments of both standing and lying trunks of Norway spruce (Picea abies). The number of non-red-listed species was related positively to moisture, and negatively to both temperature extremes and fluctuations. The numbers of both red-listed and non-red-listed species were further differently influenced by trunk diameter and by trunk properties related to the progression in wood decay. These results indicate that the richness of fungal communities in dead wood is shaped by an interaction of wood decay, moisture and temperature fluctuations.  相似文献

Wood sapstaining fungi produce multiple proteases that break down wood protein. Three groups of subtilases have been identified in sapstaining fungi; however, it is not known if these groups have distinct physiological roles (B. Hoffman and C. Breuil, Curr. Genet. 41:168-175, 2002). In this work we examined the role of the subtilase Albin1 from Ophiostoma piliferum. Reamplification of cDNA ends PCR was used to obtain the albin1 gene sequence. The encoded subtilase is probably extracellular and involved in nutrient acquisition. This gene was disrupted with an Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation system. Two of the disruptants obtained had significantly lower levels of proteolytic activity, slower growth in bovine serum albumin, and significantly reduced growth on wood. Thus, albin1 plays an important role in O. piliferum's ability to acquire nitrogen from wood proteins.  相似文献

Reflectance from the upper mandible of willow flycatchers (Empidonax traillii) was altered by painting the mandible with white nail polish. Sham-experimentals were painted with clear polish and controls were untouched. Light-billed flycatchers adjust to increased reflectance from light bills by foraging from shaded perches, a result similar to the frequent use of shade by naturally light-billed wood warblers (Emberizidae, Parulinae). When in sunlight, the proportion of commuting flights (‘give-up flights’) was significantly higher among white-billed flycatchers than among dark-billed conspecifics, suggesting a lower foraging success in sunlight for white-billed flycatchers. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that dark mandibular coloration is an adaptation to reduce visual interference.  相似文献

Several models of the effects of silviculture, radial growth, and tree age on wood density have been developed, but they have rarely considered the roles of diverse seed origins and climate. We developed a model to test the effects of radial growth, tree age, climate, and seed-source origins on wood density in 21 diverse populations of jack pine in a common garden in Petawawa, Ontario, Canada over the last 24 years using a linear mixed-effects model. Although we found significant differences in wood density among diverse seed origins, there were no differences between seed origins having the same ring age and ring width, indicating an indirect effect on wood density of seed-source origin via radial growth. High variation in wood density among trees within the same population and between populations indicated high genetic control of wood density. The climate effect was significant on wood density in all populations, but smaller when radial growth was controlled. Climate effect did not differ significantly among populations. Precipitation in July negatively affected latewood density, whereas precipitation in May in the current year and September of the previous year negatively affected earlywood density. We concluded that a single model of jack pine wood density and radial growth could be used, either controlling for climate effects or not, as the relationship between wood density and radial growth is preserved among the diverse populations, and the climate effect controlling for radial growth in the model was only slight.  相似文献

In this study, we isolated a new glucoside of the resveratrol trimer (hopeaside E) from the stem wood of Hopea utilis. The glucoside structure is partially composed of balanocarpol (resveratrol dimer) after oxidative condensation of the (E)-resveratrol-10-C-β-glucopyranoside. The structure elucidation was achieved by spectroscopic analysis including NMR experiments, and the absolute configuration was determined on the basis of the comparative configurational analysis with the β-d-glucopyranosyl group. Conformational analysis was also performed by considering deshielding effects due to aromatic rings using computational methods of molecular modeling. The aglycone has six asymmetric carbons with two aliphatic hydroxyl groups attached to them that has not been reported in any other resveratrol derivative studies.  相似文献

Pinus taeda wood chips were biotreated with Ceriporiopsis subvermispora under solid-state fermentation for periods varying from 15 to 90 days. Milled wood lignins extracted from sound and biotreated wood samples were characterized by wet-chemical and spectroscopic techniques. Treatment of the lignins by derivatization followed by reductive cleavage (DFRC) made it possible to detect DFRC monomers and dimers that are diagnostic of the occurrence of arylglycerol-β-O-aryl and β-β, β-5, β-1, and 4-O-5 units in the lignin structure. Quantification of these DFRC products indicated that β-O-aryl cleavage was a significant route for lignin biodegradation but that β-β, β-5, β-1, and 4-O-5 linkages were more resistant to the biological attack. The amount of aromatic hydroxyls did not increase with the split of β-O-4 linkages, suggesting that the β-O-4 cleavage products remain as quinone-type structures as detected by UV and visible spectroscopy. Nuclear magnetic resonance techniques also indicated the formation of new substructures containing nonoxygenated, saturated aliphatic carbons (CH2 and CH3) in the side chains of lignins extracted from biotreated wood samples.  相似文献
