Abstract

Food deprivation tests indicate that most sub-adult and adult female Latrodectus hasselti spiders would be able to endure long periods of starvation if incarcerated in cargo. The data show that, under appropriate conditions, sub-adults survive for up to 160 days and some adults for more that 300 days. Temperature is an important variable with longevity being greatest at 10°C and markedly reduced at 25°C. Sluggishness is more pronounced at lower temperatures and probably reflects reduced metabolic rates. Even after 2–3 months without food, most spiders recover when fed.

Five stages mark the progress of starvation (Indices of Starvation) and reflect a gradual decline in the spider’s normal functions. As the abdomen shrinks, with a concomitant loss of hydraulic pressure, there is a gradual decline in web-building and locomotory activities which ultimately end in the spider’s death. It is assumed that nutritional deficiency and, to a lesser extent, dehydration contribute to mortality.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that metabolic efficiency may be an important factor in male mating success when females require vigorous and/or prolonged courtship. In capital breeding animals in which a male’s resource pool is fixed at adulthood the relationship between energy expenditure and courtship performance may be especially important, as males are expected to utilize their finite resources efficiently when soliciting mates. Males may benefit from being efficient, i.e., achieving a sufficiently high level of courtship signaling at low energetic cost, if it enables them to acquire mates before their limited energy reserves are depleted. We investigated the relationship between metabolic efficiency and courtship vibrational signaling in the Australian redback spider, Latrodectus hasselti, a semelparous capital breeder where males invest heavily in courtship to secure a mating. We assessed metabolic rate in a sample of males and measured two courtship components (duty cycle and amplitude) that reflected the energy content of web-borne vibrations. We then calculated two indices of metabolic efficiency for these courtship properties. There was a quadratic relationship between mass and duty cycle such that the highest duty cycle signals were performed by males having intermediate mass. Furthermore, intermediate-mass males were also the most metabolically efficient. Prolonged courtship is necessary in L. hasselti for successful mating, and the results of this study suggest that intermediate-mass males are superior courters because they utilize their finite resource pool most efficiently to produce high energy vibrational signals.  相似文献

Abstract. Effects of form, colour, and pheromone of twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Koch), quiescent deutonymphs on adult male guarding behaviour were tested independently and in combination using no-choice and sequential-presentation bioassays. Significantly more males approached yellow stimuli sources than non-yellow sources in all bioassays, suggesting that males orient visually to yellow carotenoid pigments of quiescent deutonymphs. The form and extract (pheromone) of quiescent deutonymphs did not increase male approach frequency. All three cues elicited male arrestment; contrasts of 2 × 3 factorial bioassay data showed that male tactile and/or visual perception of form increased arrestment frequency more than did contact chemoperception of extract, while extract perception caused more arrestments than did visual perception of colour. All three cues prolonged arrestment duration and increased frequency of intermale conflicts near stimuli sources, but form had greater impact than did other cues on the numbers of conflicts observed during coguarding incidents. Significant interactions among stimuli were observed, indicating that presence of multiple stimuli had a synergistic effect on the duration of male response. Males approached and were arrested by all three stimuli combined as often as by quiescent deutonymphs, but arrestments caused by quiescent deutonymphs were longer than those elicited by artificial stimuli. This difference suggests that either additional cues or differences in pheromone release rates are involved in eliciting and prolonging male T. urticae guarding behaviour.  相似文献

Alarm pheromones, which have been documented in many species of ants, are thought to elicit responses related to aggressive or defensive behaviour. The volatile odour 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one is described as an alarm pheromone in several species of ants, including the Australian meat ant, Iridomyrmex purpureus. The alarm pheromone is released by displaying workers that aggregate in the characteristic collective display grounds, located mid-way between colonies or near contested food trees. Workers are typically more aggressive at the latter location, and the alarm pheromone may regulate the collective level of aggression. We investigated this possibility by exposing displaying workers to synthesised alarm pheromone 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one in a field experiment, and measuring their aggressive behaviour. We found no evidence that exposure to synthesised alarm pheromone caused changes in the aggressive level of workers. Subsequent field experiments revealed that the pheromone functions as an attractant, thereby increasing the density of displaying workers. More densely populated workers also display more aggressively, indicating that the interaction rate of displaying workers may determine the level of aggression in collective displays. This underlying mechanism can explain why displaying ants are more aggressive at the more densely populated food-tree locations than those displaying at locations midway between two neighbouring colony nest sites.  相似文献

Abstract. Laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the role and characteristics of male scent scales (androconia), located in patches (stigmata) on the forewings of Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae). In behavioural tests, there were 30—40% fewer matings of virgin females by males with the stigmata removed or where females had their antennal sensilla covered with nail polish, when compared to sham-treated controls. These reductions occurred despite a large increase in male courtship activity. No physical contact was observed between male wings and female antennae during mating. A scanning electron microscope study of male wings and female antennae showed that: (1) lysis zones form over time on the androconia and pieces (osmo-phores) distal to these zones break off; (2) while few of these zones are present at emergence they are numerous in-day-old males; (3) during a single episode of courtship and mating approximately two-thirds of the available osmophores break off, yet the commonly observed courtship between males does not appear to result in osmophore release; and (4) osmophores were never observed on the female antennae. Electroantennogram recordings (EAGs) indicated that: (1) female antennae responded strongly to odours from male forewings but not from other parts of either males or females; (2) female antennae responded more strongly to young field-collected males than to newly-emerged or old, field-collected males; (3) female antennal response to male forewings was reduced if the androconia were scraped off, and was eliminated if the stigmata were removed; (4) male antennae gave weak EAG responses to both male and female forewings. We conclude that males release pheromone via the breakage of osmophores during courtship. We propose that the frequently observed refusals by females of courting males are at least partially dependent on the quantity or quality of male pheromone released, which are in turn correlated with the male's age and mating status.  相似文献

A sex pheromone for adult male oriental cockroaches Blatta orientalis was isolated from the faeces of adult virgin female oriental cockroaches. It elicited a sexual response at 10 pg and 1 ng with B. orientalis and Periplaneta americana adult males, respectively. The site of production appers to be the crop, oesophagus, and proventriculus. Electroantennogram responses of male antennae toward the isolated pheromone were greater than those of the female antennae. The adult male oriental cockroach also responded to the American cockroach sex pheromone. The isolated pheromone with a mol. wt of 232 may be similar to one of the components of the American cockroach sex pheromone.  相似文献

Abstract Behavioral responses of the Asian larch bark beetle, Ips subelongatus Motsch. to three potential aggregation pheromone components, ipsenol (racemic or [?]‐enantiomer), ipsdienol (racemic or [+]‐enantiomer) and 3‐methyl‐3‐buten‐1‐ol, were tested using partial or full factorial experimental designs in two provinces (Inner Mongolia and Jilin) of northeastern China. Our field bioassays in Inner Mongolia (Larix principis‐rupprechtii Mayr. plantation) clearly showed that ipsenol, either racemic or 97%‐(?)‐enantiomer, was the only compound that significantly attracted both sexes of I. subelongatus, while all other compounds (singly or in combinations) were unattractive. There were no two‐ or three‐way synergistic interactions. However, in Jilin Province (L. gmelini[Rupr.] Rupr. Plantation), all the individual compounds tested were inactive, except a very weak activity by 97%‐(?)‐ipsenol in 2004 when the beetle population was very high. While a combination of ipsenol and ipsdienol (racemates or enantiomerically pure natural enantiomers) showed a significant attraction for both sexes of I. subelongatus, indicating a two‐way synergistic interaction between these two major components, addition of 3‐methyl‐3‐buten‐1‐ol to these active binary blend(s) did not have any effects on trap catches, suggesting that ipsenol and ipsdienol are the synergistic aggregation pheromone components of I. subelongatus in Jilin Province. It seems that 97%‐(?)‐ipsenol in Inner Mongolia or the binary blend of 97%‐(?)‐ipsenol and 97%‐(+)‐ipsdienol in Jilin Province are superior to their corresponding racemates, which might be due either to weak inhibitory effects of the antipode enantiomers or to reduced release rates of the active natural enantiomer(s) in the racemate(s). Our current bioassay results suggest that there is a strong geographical variation in aggregation pheromone response of I. subelongatus in northeastern China. Future research on the pheromone production and response of I. subelongatus from different regions in Northeast Asia will surely improve our understanding of the dynamic aggregation pheromone system of this economically important forest pest insect.  相似文献

Sexual traits are often the most divergent characters among closely related species, suggesting an important role of sexual traits in speciation. However, to prove this, we need to show that sexual trait differences accumulate before or during the speciation process, rather than being a consequence of it. Here, we contrast patterns of divergence among putative male sex pheromone (pMSP) composition and the genetic structure inferred from variation in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 and nuclear CAD loci in the African butterfly Bicyclus anynana (Butler, 1879) to determine whether the evolution of “pheromonal dialects” occurs before or after the differentiation process. We observed differences in abundance of some shared pMSP components as well as differences in the composition of the pMSP among B. anynana populations. In addition, B. anynana individuals from Kenya displayed differences in the pMSP composition within a single population that appeared not associated with genetic differences. These differences in pMSP composition both between and within B. anynana populations were as large as those found between different Bicyclus species. Our results suggest that “pheromonal dialects” evolved within and among populations of B. anynana and may therefore act as precursors of an ongoing speciation process.  相似文献

林间试验研究了用合成性信息素(反,反)-8,10-十二碳双烯-1-醇(E8,E10-12,OH)和(反,反)-8,10-十二碳双烯乙酸酯(E8,E10-12,Ac)(2:3)诱捕法防治行道树害虫槐小卷蛾(Cydia trasias Meyrick)的防治效果,诱捕区长500米,宽40米,三角形粘胶诱捕器悬挂在距地面约3m的国槐树侧枝上,诱捕器间距约15m,共悬挂62个诱捕器,对照区长250m,与诱捕区相距400米,防治效果用活雌蛾诱捕器,粘翅活雌蛾交配率以及国槐叶柄和果荚的受害率进行评价,槐小卷蛾一年有3次成虫发生高峰期,雌雄性比接近1:1,在诱捕区内,越冬代,第一代和第二代成虫发生期间分别诱集到雄蛾2268,2149和2342头,在越冬代和第二代成虫发生盛期,诱捕区内活雌蛾诱捕器诱捕雄蛾的数量比对照区明显减少(P<0.01),诱捕区内粘翅雌蛾的交配率比对照下降86.0%,在第一代,第二代和第三代幼虫为害盛末期,诱捕区内叶柄及果荚被蛀率分别比对照降低63.51%,68.47%和73.45%(P<0.01),试验结果表明,用合成性信息素诱捕法防治槐小卷蛾效果明显,前景广阔。  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The responses of adult male Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Noctuidae) to components of the female sex pheromone were examined in a wind tunnel. The responses of male moths from both Egyptian and Cretan stocks to the primary 'attractant' (Z, E)-9,11 tetradecadienyl acetate (III), were compared with the responses to III combined with various percentages of the secondary components tetradecyl acetate (I), (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (IIA), (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (IIB), IIA and IIB combined, and(Z, E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate (IV). Analysis of the flight behaviour recorded on videotape showed that with one exception (IV), the secondary components increased the males' success in reaching the source and increased the length of time they spent at the source. In most cases, increasing the relative percentage of the secondary component caused a reduction in the number of males responding. The results are compared with those obtained in field trials with S.littoralis.  相似文献

Abstract. Electrophysiological, behavioural and field evidence is presented for a volatile attractant produced by host-seeking, parous female Culicoides impunctatus Goetghebuer. Attraction of host-seeking females to other live parous females or to extracts of parous females was demonstrated in Y-tube bioassays, as well as in field trials using baited sticky traps. Threshold numbers were 100–200 females, both in the laboratory and field. Antennal receptors to this pheromone were revealed by recording electroantennograms (EAGs) in response to odour from live parous females and to the extracts of female midges. The female-produced attractant did not alter field catches of male C. impunctatus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Male oriental fruit moths, Grapholitha molesta (Busck) (Tortricidae), flew at lower overall and net ground velocities when they flew toward higher concentration pheromone sources. Turning frequency was greater with increased pheromone concentration, while the distance of turns from the plume axis back towards the axis decreased. Turning magnitude and inter-reversal track angles remained constant at all concentrations tested. Concomitant with the changes in ground velocity but constant inter-reversal angles, were decreases in airspeed, decreases in the moths' course angles and increases in their drift angles. The significance of these changes is discussed in relation to their possible role in a longitudinal chemoklinotactic programme of turning operating in conjunction with anemotaxis to allow location of a pheromone source in wind.  相似文献

The attraction range of olfactory response by winged female gynoparae (autumn migrants that give birth to oviparae, the sexual females) and male damson–hop aphids Phorodon humuli (Schrank) is investigated in field experiments over 2 years by analyzing the spatial patterns of catches in concentric circles of yellow‐painted traps (60 in total) around a central trap releasing the species' sex pheromone, (1RS,7S,7aS)‐nepetalactol. Males are more likely than females to be found in the central trap, with 65.6% of the 1824 males caught there compared with 11.2% of 1346 females. Both morphs are more numerous in traps axial with the mean wind direction and centred on the pheromone‐release trap than at other angles. Males are approximately five‐fold more numerous in traps downwind than at similar distances upwind of the pheromone, showing that its presence stimulates landing. For males, the estimated active space of the lure extends 6 m downwind. Catches of females are equally numerous up and downwind of the pheromone lure because females orienting on the axis of the pheromone source continue to respond to visual cues in their flight path if they overshoot the olfactory one. For females, the active space of a pheromone lure is less than 2 m downwind. It is unimportant for either morph whether the pheromone‐release trap is yellow or transparent. In these experiments, both morphs orient with, track and probably arrive in the pheromone source trap from at least 26 m, the distance to the nearest aphid‐infested hops.  相似文献

Pheromone gland extracts from calling female Plodia interpunctella contained at least seven compounds that consistently elicited electroantennographic responses from male antennae upon gas chromatographic analysis. Three of these compounds were found to be the previously identified gland constituents, i.e., (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate (Z9,E12-14:OAc), (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienal (Z9,E12-14:Ald) and (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienol (Z9,E12-14:OH). A fourth EAD-active compound was identified as (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc). The homologue (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:OAc) was also identified in the extracts, but showed no EAD activity. The identity of all five compounds was confirmed by comparison of GC retention times and mass spectra with those of synthetic standards. In flight tunnel tests there were no significant differences in response of male P. interpunctella to the bait containing all four EAD-active compounds and the responses to female gland extacts. A behavioural assay of different two-compound blends in the flight tunnel showed that only addition of the corresponding aldehyde to the major pheromone component Z9,E12-14:OAc raised the male response. A subtractive assay, however, revealed that the exclusion of any of the compounds from the complete four-compound blend reduced its activity significantly. We thus conclude that the female-produced sex pheromone of P. interpunctella consists of at least four components, i.e., Z9,E12-14:OAc, Z9,E12-14:Ald, Z9,E12-14:OH and Z9-14:OAc.In a field trapping test performed in a storage facility, the four-component blend attracted significantly more males of P. interpunctella than traps baited with Z9,E12-14:OAc alone. In contrast, the highest number of Ephestia kuehniella males was found in the traps baited with this major component, suggesting that the secondary pheromone components contribute to the species specificity of the blend.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. All three synthetic diastereoisomers of 13,23-dimethyl-pentatriacontane, the pheromone of Glossina pallidipes (Austen), have been tested in the G. pallidipes sex pheromone bioassay, together with one of the four diastereoisomers of 13,17-dimethylpentatriacontane, originally proposed as a candidate pheromone of G. pallidipes. Of the three isomers of 13,23-dimethylpentatriacontane only the (13R,23S) isomer was active with an ED-50 of 4.47±1.09/μg (mean±SD). The (13R,17R)-13,17-dimethylpentatriacontane was inactive. The diastereo-isomeric mixtures of 13,17- and 13,23-dimethylpentatriacontane were active with ED-50 values of 17.88±1.25/μg and 8.88±1.15μg respectively. The natural pheromone was active with an ED-50 of 8.07±1.17 μg indicating it to be a diastereoisomeric mixture.  相似文献

Mating of the female bagworm, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis (Haworth) (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) on host trees treated with the racemate of the species' female sex pheromone, 1-methylbutyl decanoate, was suppressed by 87% in the field. The suppressive effect of the pheromone was independent of insect population density when it was evaporated from female-infested trees at 712 (±29; S.E.) mg/tree/3 day from a 488 cm × 0.63 cm polyvinylchloride laminated tape. However, evaporation of pheromone at a lower rate did not suppress mating. Observations of adult male behavior in the vicinity of the pheromone-impregnated tape revealed that males were attracted to the tape and that they made copulatory thrusts toward the tape and any object touching the tape. These observations and analyses of the pheromone titers of individual females showed that males can respond to a wide range of pheromone concentrations. Indications are that the mechanism of mating suppression probably involved male sensory adaptation or central nervous habituation to the synthetic 1-methylbutyl decanoate and that the compound, evaporated from host trees, could be useful as a plant protectant against the bagworm.
Résumé Les accouplements des femelles de Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis Haworth (Lep. Psychidae) ont été réduits de 87% sur des arbres hôtes traités dans la nature par des racémates du 1-méthylburyldécanoate, la phéromone sexuelle femelle de cette espèce. Lorsque la phéromone s'évapore à partir d'un ruban de 488 cm sur 0,63 de chlorure de polyvinyle portant 712 (±29 S.E.) mg, par arbre pendant 3 jours, l'efficacité était indépendante de la densité de population de l'insecte. Cependant, l'évaporation de la phéromone à une plus faible concentration était sans effet. L'observation du comportement des mâles au voisinage des rubans imprégnés de phéromone a montré qu'ils étaient attirés par le ruban et qu'ils tentaient de s'accoupler avec le ruban et tout objet à son contact. Ces observations et les analyses des concentrations en phéromones des femelles ont montré que les âles pouvaient répondre à une gamme étendue de concentrations en phéromone. Il y a des indices que le mécanisme de suppression de l'accouplement implique une adaptation sensorielle du mâle ou une accoutumance du système nerveux central au 1-méthylbutyl méthylbutyl décanoate synthétique et que ce composé s'évaporant sur les arbres hôtes, pourrait être utilisable pour protéger efficacemment contre T. ephemeraeformis.

20 0 2年在贵州省都匀茶场研究了茶毛虫性信息素引诱剂大面积诱杀茶毛虫的防治效果 ,并观察了不同浓度以及不同高度设置对诱蛾效果的影响。结果表明 :越冬代试验 2 0d ,诱杀成虫 42 60头 ,第1代试验 44d ,诱杀成虫 1 3 42 3头 ;防治后田间落卵量以及后代幼虫数分别比对照区减少 5 3 3 3 %和60 5 3 % ;诱蛾效果以浓度为 1 5mg 枚的诱芯效果最好 ,诱盆设置高度以 90cm左右为佳。  相似文献
