Summary. Phosvitin polymorphism in egg yolk of the Japanese quail was found by horizontal polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis. Six phenotypes of yolk phosvitin designated A, B, C, AB, AC, and BC were observed in a population of 281 birds. Analysis of family data revealed that the phenotypic variation of quail yolk phosvitins was controlled by an autosomal Pv locus with three codominant alleles, Pva, Pvb and Pvc. The gene frequencies of Pva, Pvb and Pvc were 0.064, 0.824 and 0.112, respectively.  相似文献

Phosphoglucose isomerase electrophoretic patterns of the Japanese quail were found to be controlled by three alleles at an autosomal locus. In the laboratory quail population, the frequency of the alleles PGIF, PGIS1 and PGIS2 was 0.175, 0.465 and 0.360, respectively.  相似文献

Transferrin types in the Japanese quail Coturnix coturnix japonica are controlled by a single autosomal locus Tf with at least two codominant alleles TfB and Tfc. The frequencies of TfB and Tfc in a commercial population of the domestic quail were 1.00 and 0.00, respectively.
Previous studies demonstrated that in the domestic populations of the Japanese quail three electrophoretic patterns AB, B and BC existed in egg white conalbumin and that the electrophoretic variation of conalbumin occurred in parallel with that of serum transferrin. Furthermore, from the preliminary mating experiments the transferrin-conalbumin variation was proposed to be under the control of at least two codominant alleles 77s and Tfc at an autosomal locus (Kimura et al., 1977, 1978).
The present study was designed (1) to report a large amount of family data from three generations in order to support the previously published hypothesis on genetic control of electrophoretic patterns of transferrin, and (2) to survey the gene constitution of transferrin in a commercial population of the domestic quail.
Sera were added with iron, heated for 5 min at 65°C (Stratil, 1967), then were investigated by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Hydrolysed starch from Connaught Medical Laboratories, Toronto, was used. A discontinuous citrate/Tris/LiOH/borate buffer system (pH 8.0) of Ferguson & Wallace (1961) was employed. Vitamin D binding protein ( GC ) and serum protease inhibitor ( PI ) have been added to genetic markers in the Japanese quail. Both loci were controlled by autosomal codominant alleles named GCA, GCB and PIA, PIB, PIC, respectively. Close linkage between the loci for serum albumin ( ALB ) and GC protein is reported. Two recombinants were observed in 145 informative offspring of 14 families. The recombination frequency between the loci was estimated as 0.014±0.006. Thus, GC was assigned to linkage group II in the Japanese quail. No signs of linkage were observed among the loci for the ALB-GC complex, PI. serum prealbumin 2 ( PA2 ), phosphoglucose isomerase ( PG1 ), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase ( PGD ) and esterase-D ( ESD ).  相似文献

A genetic variation was found in pancreatic esterases of Japanese quail which appeared to be arylesterase. It was found on the cathode side in the agar gel electrophoresis. Three phenotypes, A, B and AB, were observed. These phenotypes were shown to be controlled by one autosomal locus, designated as Es-4 , with co-dominant alleles Es-4A and Es-4B.
Es-4 esterase isozymes were detected in all the individuals from about 4 days of age, but the activity was very weak. However, it gradually increased to reach a level almost the same as that of a mature quail from about 15 days of age.  相似文献

Three phenotypes of phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) from the Japanese quail erythrocytes were observed by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Population and family data from one laboratory population of quail was consistent with the theory that PGI polymorphism was controlled by two codominant, autosomal alleles designated PGIF and PGIS with gene frequency values 0.25 and 0.75, respectively. The study supported the earlier view that the Japanese quail is highly polymorphic with regard to biochemical variation.  相似文献

Genetic polymorphism of hemoglobin was found in the erythrocytes of dogs of seven Japanese native breeds by using starch gel electrophoresis. Analysis of parentage records of the dogs revealed that the phenotypic variation of hemoglobin is controlled by one autosomal locus with two codominant alleles, HbA and HbB. The allele HbA occurred only in Japanese native breeds except Shikoku. The frequency of HbA in the Japanese breeds was low and 0.08. All the dogs belonging to 25 European breeds and 5 oriental origin (except Japan) breeds examined in this experiments had the homozygous genotype constitution HbB/HbB.  相似文献

Genetic polymorphism was found in the isozymes of leucine aminopeptidase in the canine plasma. Analysis of parentage records of the dogs examined revealed that the phenotypic variation of leucine aminopeptidase isozymes was controlled by one autosomal locus, designated Lap , with two codominant gene alleles, Lap A and Lap B, though individuals of homozygous B type were not found in the specimen used. The gene frequencies were 0.97 for Lap A and 0.03 for Lap B in most of the dog breeds examined. Higher frequencies for Lap B (0.11–0.25) were obtained in breeds such as Pointer, Doberman pinscher, Boxer, Borzoi and San'in-Shiba (a Japanese native breed), while in German shepherd, Collie, and two of the Japanese native breeds, Akita and Kishu, phenotype of the isozyme seemed to be fixed to homozygous A ( Lap A/ Lap A).  相似文献

Using agarose gel isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting with rabbit anti-rabbit C6, a genetic polymorphism was found in the sixth component of complement (C6) in 18 Asian native breeds or populations and three European breeds of dog. The C6 locus was highly polymorphic. The phenotype distribution data indicated that dog C6 phenotypes were controlled by seven codominant alleles, C6 A, C6 B, C6 C, C6 D, C6 E, C6 F and C6 G, at a single autosomal locus. Breed differences were observed among the gene frequencies, especially between Asian and European breeds. Two gene flows from the adjacent areas into Japanese native dogs were postulated.  相似文献

The effects of photon flux density and temperature on net photosynthesis and transpiration rates of mature and immature leaves of three-year-old Japanese larch Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Sarg. trees were determined with an infrared, differential open gas analysis system. Net photosynthetic response to increasing photon flux densities was similar for different foliage positions and stage of maturity. Light compensation was between 25 and 50 μmol m−2 s−1. Rates of photosynthesis increased rapidly at photon flux densities above the compensation level and became saturated between 800 and 1000 μmol m−2 s−1. Transpiration rates at constant temperature likewise increased with increasing photon flux density, and leveled off between 800 and 1000 μmol m−2 s−1. Photosynthetic response to temperature was determined in saturating light and was similar for all foliage positions; it increased steadily from low temperatures to an optimum range betweeen 15 and 21°C and then decreased rapidly above 21°C. Transpiration rate, however, increased continuously with rising temperature up to the experimental maximum. CO2 compensation concentrations for mature foliage varied between 58 and 59 μl l−1; however, foliage borne at the apex of the terminal leader compensated at 75 μl l−1. None of these data support the claim that Japanese larch possesses C4 photosynthetic characteristics.  相似文献

The amylase-producing ability of the intestinal microflora in cultured specimens of ayu, carp, channel catfish, Japanese eel and tilapia was determined. Mean viable counts of aerobes and anaerobes ranged from 1·1×106 to 3·7×108 cfu g−1 and from 1·3×103 to 1·6×108 cfu g−1, respectively. Aeromonas spp. and Bacteroidaceae were predominant in four to five fish species. Of 206 strains examined, 65 (31·6%) produced ≥0·01 U amylase ml−1. The percentage of producers differed among families and genera of bacteria and fish species. While 56% of the anaerobes produced amylase, only 20% of the aerobes did. More than 50% of Aeromonas , Bacteroidaceae and Clostridium strains produced amylase efficiently while Acinetobacter , coryneforms, Enterobacteriaceae, Moraxella , Plesiomonas and Streptococcus strains did not. High amylase production (≥0·05 U ml−1) was found in 12 strains, 11 from Aeromonas and one Pseudomonas . The percentage of high amylase producers in Japanese eel was lower than the other four fish (2–30%). These results strongly suggest that the amylase produced by the intestinal microflora play an important role in the digestion of starch in freshwater fish to some extent.  相似文献

S ummary . The lethal and growth depressing effects of feeding raw navy beans (RNB) to Japanese quail have been shown to be due neither to poor palatability nor to dialysable, lipid or carbohydrate constituents, but to a protein material soluble at pH 3 and precipitable by saturation with (NH4)2SO4. This material proved resistant to digestion by pepsin and proteolytic bacteria but was destroyed by autoclaving at 121° for 15 min. Germfree birds given a diet containing RNB which had been fermented by coliforms grew well, indicating that toxicity of RNB is not dependent on the release by intestinal bacteria of poisons from innocuous precursors in the beans. Examination of the effects of feeding diets containing other raw legume seeds to quail have shown that toxicity is associated with the presence of high concentrations of phytohaemagglutinins (PHAs). Quail given RNB diet showed a greater incidence of liver infection than birds fed an autoclaved bean diet but bacteriological examination of gut contents of such birds revealed no marked qualitative or quantitative differences. Chemical examination of gut contents likewise revealed no marked differences. Experiments with gnotobiotic quail showed that coliforms derived from a variety of sources were capable of causing the death of birds on RNB diet and that the numbers attained in different parts of the intestine by a single coliform strain were not affected by the diet fed. The results suggest that toxicity of RNB may be due to impairment of body defence mechanisms by PHA leading to tissue invasion by normally innocuous components of the intestinal microflora.  相似文献

Pores and mammillae per unit area of the eggshells of 34 avian species were counted. The number of pores/cm2 varied from about 45 for the King penguin ( Aptenodytes patagonia ) to 306 for the Japanese quail ( Coturnix coturnix ). Throughout this range there was a positive linear correlation ( r =0.92) between the number of pores and the number of mammillae per unit area of shell.
Scanning electron micrographs of the inner surface of eggshells scoured with NaOH suggested that the above relationship may result from the packing of the calcite columns, which is controlled by the density of the mammillary seeding sites laid down upon the outer shell membrane. Thus it is inferred that the distribution in the uterus of the cells which secrete the sites on which calcification is initiated determine ultimately the porosity of the eggshell. Such a concept implies that evolutionary pressures operate primarily upon these cells rather than on crystallisation, a process over which a bird may have no control.  相似文献

Larval and early juvenile growth was backcalculated for individual Japanese sardines Sardinops melanostictus using the biological intercept method based on the allometric relationship between otolith radii and fish lengths. Sardines grew at 0·81 mm day−1 during the larval stage. In the early juvenile stage, they grew from 32·3 to 45·4 mm fork length ( L ) over a 20-day period (0·64mm day−1). Using the observed relationship between L and wet body weight ( W ), W = 0·00942 L 2.99, W of the sardine juveniles was calculated to increase from 306 to 832 mg during the 20-day period. The carbon (C) requirement to achieve this growth in weight was estimated to increase from 5·7 to 9·6 mg day−1. Stomach contents of the sardines were composed mostly of copepods (73%) and larvaceans (25%). Wet stomach content weight ( Ws ) was expressed by a power function of the W , Ws=0·731 W 0·658. Carbon and nitrogen constituted 41·7 ± 1·5 and 10·0 ± 0·4% of the dry Ws , respectively. Stomach C content increased from 2·0 to 3·9 mg during the 20-day period. Three to four cycles of the daily turnover of stomach contents during the 16 h of daytime, corresponding to a gastric evacuation rate of 0·2–0·3 h−1 under continuous feeding, met the C requirement to achieve the backcalculated growth in early juvenile sardines. The Kuroshio frontal waters seem to provide Japanese sardine juveniles with favourable growth conditions.  相似文献

Coturnix chinensis (blue-breasted quail) has been classically grouped in Galliformes Phasianidae Coturnix, based on morphologic features and biochemical evidence. Since the blue-breasted quail has the smallest body size among the species of Galliformes, in addition to a short generation time and an excellent reproductive performance, it is a possible model fowl for breeding and physiological studies of the Coturnix japonica (Japanese quail) and Gallus gallus domesticus (chicken), which are classified in the same family as blue-breasted quail. However, since its phylogenetic position in the family Phasianidae has not been determined conclusively, the sequence of the entire blue-breasted quail mitochondria (mt) genome was obtained to provide genetic information for phylogenetic analysis in the present study. The blue-breasted quail mtDNA was found to be a circular DNA of 16,687 base pairs (bp) with the same genomic structure as the mtDNAs of Japanese quail and chicken, though it is smaller than Japanese quail and chicken mtDNAs by 10 bp and 88 bp, respectively. The sequence identity of all mitochondrial genes, including those for 12S and 16S ribosomal RNAs, between blue-breasted quail and Japanese quail ranged from 84.5% to 93.5%; between blue-breasted quail and chicken, sequence identity ranged from 78.0% to 89.6%. In order to obtain information on the phylogenetic position of blue-breasted quail in Galliformes Phasianidae, the 2,184 bp sequence comprising NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 and cytochrome b genes available for eight species in Galliformes [Japanese quail, chicken, Gallus varius (green junglefowl), Bambusicola thoracica (Chinese bamboo partridge), Pavo cristatus (Indian peafowl), Perdix perdix (gray partridge), Phasianus colchicus (ring-neck pheasant), and Tympanchus phasianellus (sharp-tailed grouse)] together with that of Aythya americana (redhead) were examined using a maximum likelihood (ML) method. The ML analyses on the first/second codon positions, the third codon positions, and amino acid sequence consistently demonstrated that blue-breasted quail and Japanese quail are in the same phylogenetic cluster.  相似文献

Homology for two plumage color loci was studied by hybridization between chickens and Japanese quail. First, chicken-quail hybrids were produced from homozygous "lavender" chicken cocks and "bleu" Japanese quail, and all 30 hybrids had the same parental slate blue plumage color. On the other hand, no hybrids with this plumage were obtained out of 18 progeny from the same cocks and wild-type quail. These results show that the slate blue plumage color is determined by homologous loci in Japanese quail and chickens. Second, all (n = 25) chicken-quail hybrids hatched from homozygous "recessive white" cocks and "recessive white" (n = 8) or "wild-type" (n = 17) quail had the same pattern of plumage color, with white feathers on the ventral face and colored feathers elsewhere. These results indicate that the recessive white mutations are not homologous in Japanese quail and chickens.  相似文献

Abstract The distribution of oil-degrading microorganism in samples of surface water and sediment from North Eastern Japanese coastal waters was studied. Modified natural sea water (NSW) agar supplemented with emulsified crude oil (Arabian light, 5 g 1−1) was used to enumerate oil-degrading bacteria. In addition, filtered samples were inoculated into NSW broth containing weathered crude oil. Incubation was carried out at 20°C for 7–10 days. Populations of oil-degrading microorganisms ranged from 3–230 CFU 100 ml−1 in surface waters and 2.9 × 103 to 1.2 × 105 CFU g in sediment samples. Analysis of variance showed that oil-degraders were heterogenously distributed. Six mixed populations selected from 20 samples were studied to determine which of the constituent microflora were capable of crude oil biodegradation. Among 51 strains selected for identification, only 61% could be identified which formed 17 different bacterial species. Acinetobacter species (14 strains), Psychrobacter immobilis (9 strains) and Gram-positive cocci (10 strains) were the predominant types. Oil-degrading activity by various mixed populations (three each from water and sediment samples) was determined by using a conventional total weight reduction technique. Reduction in amount of various aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon substrates was verified using gas chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography. Biodegradation of crude oil ranged from 35–58%. One mixed population of the sediment samples degraded more hydrocarbon (both aliphatic and aromatic) and the biodegradation of the aromatic hydrocarbon reached as high as 48%.  相似文献

When 1 m M spermidine or spermine was included in an absorption solution which contained 20 m M Na+ and 1 m M Rb+, Na+ influx into excised maize roots ( Zea mays L. cv. Golden Cross Bantam) was reduced. Rb+ influx was reduced in the presence of spermidine and uneffected in the presence of spermine when compared with control solutions. When 1 m M Ca2+ replaced the polyamines, Na+ influx was strongly reduced and Rb+ influx was promoted. Rb+ influx from 1 m M Rb+ solutions which did not contain Na+ was also promoted by 1 m M Ca2+, but was inhibited by 1 m M spermidine. This Ca2+ promotion of Rb+ influx could be reversed by 10 times greater concentration of spermidine in the absorption solution. H+ efflux from excised roots was inhibited by spermidine when compared with Ca2+ or control solutions, however, the plasma membrane ATPase was not inhibited by spermidine. It is concluded that external Ca2+ plays two separate roles in membrane function, only one of which can be substituted for by polyamines. The first role, maintenance of membrane integrity, can be substituted for by spermidine or spermine. The second function, maintenance of the Rb+ transport mechanism, is Ca2+ specific and cannot be substituted for by spermidine or spermine. The results of this study are discussed in terms of electrostatic interactions between the plasma membrane and the Ca2+ or polyamines.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of alcohol and Ca2+ transport inhibitors on depolarization-induced stimulation of oxidative phosphorylation and free-Ca2+ concentrations in rat synaptosomes were investigated. Glucose oxidation was stimulated by depolarization with K+ or veratridine and by the Ca2+ ionophore ionomycin. The stimulation by K+, veratridine, and ionomycin was correlated with elevation of synaptosomal free Ca2+. Depolarization-stimulated respiration was inhibited by verapamil, Cd2+, and ruthenium red but not by diltiazem. Synaptosomal Ca2+ elevation was inhibited by verapamil but not by ruthenium red. These results indicate that the stimulation depends on elevation of mitochondrial free Ca2+. Ethanol, at pharmacological concentrations (50–200 m M ), inhibited the Ca2+-dependent stimulation of oxidative phosphorylation. This inhibition resulted, in part, from the inhibition of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, which inhibited the elevation of synaptosomal free Ca2+, and, in part, from the stimulation of the mitochondrial Ca2+/Na+ antiporter, which inhibited the elevation of the mitochondrial matrix free Ca2+. The inhibition by ethanol of the excitation-induced stimulation of oxidative phosphorylation in the synapse may contribute to the depressant and narcotic effects of alcohol and enhance excitotoxicity.  相似文献
