Quantifying Competitiveness in Woody Plants   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Abstract: A concept is presented for analysing and quantifying the competitiveness of woody plants. Efficiency ratios are defined that relate resource investments and gains to above- and belowground space sequestration. Such efficiencies are exemplified in comparisons between young and mature trees of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway spruce (Picea abies), resulting in remarkable consistencies across plant age and species. The demonstration extends to assessments of the inter- and intra-specific competition between young beech and spruce plants in a phytotron study, using CO2/O3 regimes as disturbants for examining the sensitivity of the efficiency ratios. In mixed plantations, the growth of spruce was enhanced and that of beech reduced as compared with the corresponding monocultures. This effect related to a high efficiency of spruce in aboveground space sequestration per resource investment, whereas the efficiency in carbon gain (return per unit of crown volume) was of minor importance. In contrast, beech displayed advantages in belowground space sequestration. However, competitiveness of young trees was hardly affected by the applied CO2/O3 treatments. The concept proves to be adequate for quantitatively comparing competitiveness across species, age and growth conditions. One further efficiency ratio, i.e., volume-related respiratory and transpiratory costs for sustaining functionality in resource sequestration, deserves attention in achieving a mechanistic understanding of competitive behaviour, in particular, in woody plants.  相似文献

The present state of genetic engineering (GE) of forest woody plants is considered with special reference to the materials of the International Conference Wood, Breeding, Biotechnology and Industrial Expectations held in France in June, 2001. 丽水市大山峰位于浙南山区,是浙江省木本植物区系最丰富地区之一,共有木本植物84科237属543种,而且古老孑遗植物和珍稀濒危植物较多,地理成分复杂多样,可划分为14个分布区类型,区系具有明显的热带-温带过渡性;木本植物区系中,中国特有种占绝对优势,共有338种,占总种数的62.2%,是构成大山峰森林植被的建群种和优势种的主要成分.与邻近山地植物区系比较发现,大山峰木本植物区系与浙江白云山关系最密切.  相似文献

Measuring Biomass and Carbon Stock in Resprouting Woody Plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Resprouting multi-stemmed woody plants form an important component of the woody vegetation in many ecosystems, but a clear methodology for reliable measurement of their size and quick, non-destructive estimation of their woody biomass and carbon stock is lacking. Our goal was to find a minimum number of sprouts, i.e., the most easily obtainable, and sprout parameters that should be measured for accurate sprout biomass and carbon stock estimates. Using data for 5 common temperate woody species, we modelled carbon stock and sprout biomass as a function of an increasing number of sprouts in an interaction with different sprout parameters. The mean basal diameter of only two to five of the thickest sprouts and the basal diameter and DBH of the thickest sprouts per stump proved to be accurate estimators for the total sprout biomass of the individual resprouters and the populations of resprouters, respectively. Carbon stock estimates were strongly correlated with biomass estimates, but relative carbon content varied among species. Our study demonstrated that the size of the resprouters can be easily measured, and their biomass and carbon stock estimated; therefore, resprouters can be simply incorporated into studies of woody vegetation.  相似文献

The uptake and metabolism of α-ketoglutarate-5-14C by peach, apple, and privet root tissues were studied over various time intervals. As much as 80% of the absorbed 14C appeared as 14CO2 in 320 minutes in peach roots. Apple and privet roots were less effective in this conversion with the bulk of the 14C found in the organic acid fraction. This indicates differences in organic acid metabolism among species of woody plants.

The 14C accumulated in malate earlier and in larger quantities than in citrate. Both glutamate and aspartate were labeled in 10 minutes and glutamate was labeled as early as 3 minutes. The labeling pattern does not clearly distinguish between the synthesis of glutamate by glutamic dehydrogenase or by transamination with oxaloacetate.

The rapid metabolism of α-ketoglutarate to glutamate by the 3 species studied indicates the presence of enzyme systems important in amino acid synthesis in the roots of woody plants.

in vitro including cotyledonary stage somatic embryos have the ability to grow photoautotrophically (without sugar in the culture medium), and that the low or negative net photosynthetic rate of plants in vitro is due not to poor photosynthetic ability, but to the low CO2 concentration in the air-tight culture vessel during the photoperiod. Furthermore, we have shown that the photoautotrophic growth of several woody plants in vitro can be significantly promoted by increasing the CO2 concentration and light intensity in the vessel, by decreasing the relative humidity in the vessel, and by using a fibrous or porous supporting material with high air porosity instead of gelling agents such as agar. In this paper, the advantages of photoautotrophic micropropagation in a conventional, small culture vessel with a microporous gas filter for enhancing natural ventilation and in a large culture vessel with a forced ventilation unit are described for woody plants such as acacia (Acacia mangium), coffee (Coffea arabusta), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldlensis), mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), neem (Azadirachta indica), paulownia (Paulownia fortunei), and pine (Pinus radiata).
